Grassroots organization works to Keep Wimberley Beautiful

There’s

definitely a certain pride in one’s community that seems to pervade much of our glorious Hill Country. Yep, folks just want their “little bit of Texas” to always look its best and, to that end, a joint spirit often arises, gains momentum, flourishes and ultimately results in a combined effort that keeps things on the home front “looking good.” Now, isn’t that nice?

Well, not so surprisingly, our Wimberley also has its own grassroots organization dedicated to maintaining an attractive and welcoming landscape that, after 30 years continues to enhance its town’s surroundings while benefiting a very

grateful citizenry. And really, what better name for this appreciated organization than Keep Wimberley Beautiful. And boy does it!

Initially the brainchild of area resident Martha Knies, it all started back in 1992 when she and several friends were having breakfast on the town square. Looking around at the unsightly scragginess found in the immediate area (where weeds abounded) they asked themselves, “Who’s going to clean this up?” And, the answer they all quickly realized was “nobody,” unless they took charge and, charge they did!

Starting with those downtown weeds then graduating to debris removal along the highway (that they replaced with lovely wildflowers), the

fledgling group of concerned volunteers went on to tackle myriad other beautification projects, large and small, that needed tackling. Community gardens were established. Litter pick-up rallies were held. Recycling programs were instituted and even seasonal decorations began popping up, much to the delight of locals and visitors alike.

If you see a well-tended flowerbed within the township, chances are more than good that Keep Wimberley Beautiful had a hand in it. Why, they’ve even established on-going adult and youth environmental educational programs that support KWB’s mission of “Keep it green, keep it clean and keep it country!”

And remarkably, it’s still all accomplished solely with volunteers and generous donations! Since its inception so long ago, this selfless organization (today proudly affiliated with Keep Texas Beautiful) continues to seek new worthwhile beautification projects that enhance so many aspects of life in Wimberley throughout the year.

Perhaps one of the best examples is the township’s much patronized (and appreciated) public park, The Martha Knies Community Park, located a short walk from the square on the Old Kyle Road near the Cypress Creek.

Obviously named for KWB’s founder in honor of her decades of commitment (she was the organization’s first president, serving for 20 years and, she’s still quite active today), the green space not only serves as a respite where young and old can go to relax and reflect but also as a reminder of the value of beautification.

One of the more notable installations on the lush and colorful park grounds is a bronze sculpture “Painting Music” by Angela de la Vega - a testament to the creative spirit of children and their natural love and appreciation for nature. The piece is especially suited for the park bearing Martha’s name, as she recalled her childhood joy of reading in natural environments.

Oldie’s Burgers & More... Wimberley’s hamburger heaven!

Any visit to Wimberley is definitely worth the trip because there’s just so much here. Why, folks just love to come for the beautiful creek and river, the incredible shopping, the beckoning countryside, and … the hamburgers?

Yep, when you think about it, any small town worth its salt has got to have its very own traditional burger joint where old school eats abound to the sizzle and pop of fresh-ground, hand-patted (never frozen) beef, perfectly grilled, then blanketed with generous slices of smokey cheese.

All before being lovingly laid onto a lightly toasted bun further (and flavorfully) enhanced by a slathering of traditional and/or surprisingly innovative sauces. Now that will get your juices running!

Add to that exceptional edible a host of delightful complementing sides and, one might honestly think that he/ she just found hamburger heaven. Or, if in Wimberley, more accurately, Oldies Burgers and More. Amen and halleluiah!

Located a short distance from downtown on an inviting Pecan tree-shaded piece of property adorned with multiple picnic tables, an open pavilion and, the enclosed kitchen itself, the rustic yet comfortable venue immediately communicates a “classic American” feel.

Nothing up-scale here. It’s strictly (and authentically) downhome and, once you’ve tasted the offerings, darn flavorful to boot. And, as an added reason for its alluring ambiance (besides the chow) is its history.

While technically only several years old, owner and operator Tracy Scudder who, with her sister Liz, founded Oldies, have deep roots within Wimberley that go back decades.

More importantly, their food-oriented parents, Jim and Anne (Anne still helps out at the eatery) were Hays County food truck pioneers dishing out their own delicious burgers and barbecue for years.

As a family, after decades (hence the name “Oldies”) of honing the skills and recipes that would ultimately leave their imprint on today’s popular iteration, the accepted opinion is simply, “Staying real, then and now, has been the secret ingredient! And real is what Oldies is.

So, let’s talk menu. Well, for starters, and as the name so accurately states, it’s the burgers. Oldies offers a mouthwatering variety ranging from a “basic” quarter-pound hamburger, to cheeseburgers topped with cheese favorites including America, Swiss, cheddar and pepper-jack.

All burgers come equipped (if desired) with lettuce, onions, pickles and, depending on the diner’s preference, either mayo or mustard. But, other variants exist as well including doublemeat, appetite-slaying monsters, savory mushroom burgers, a tangy “awesome sauce” model and, even an Elvis-burger sporting the king’s favorite, peanut butter! Really, burger-wise, there’s something to please one and all.

But, as an all-American eatery, Oldies also offers an equally tasty line of traditional favorites including hot dogs, corn dogs, “jailhouse” chili (by the bowl or as a topping for the dog and/or burger) and a very cool, chicken salad sandwich.

Add a side or two of fries, tots, kettle chips, onion rings, sweet potato wedges and even fried okra and wow, that’s a meal! But,don’t stop there because must-have desserts are available as well including slices of homemade key lime pie or chocolate rum cake. Yummy!

Lastly, to wash everything down, an assortment of icycold beverages are also available for purchase including sodas, tea and, just plain water. If 21-years-old, be sure and ask about the complementary beer with each order Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Wimberley Institute of Cultures’ Harvest Moon Dinner & Dance

Wimberley Institute of Cultures (WIC) will host the Harvest Moon Dinner & Dance Sunday, November 6, 2022 at the Historic Fischer Hall (701 Fischer Store Road in Fischer, Texas). Dinner will be catered by Old 300 BBQ of Blanco. Following dinner, guests can enjoy music by Eric Hokkanen & Friends and a silent auction.

The event is the fall fundraiser for the Wimberley Valley Museum located in Wimberley. The spring Pie Social is also a WIC-organized function. These two fundraisers help to keep the Museum up and running.

The Wimberley Valley Museum consists of two historical homes: the Winters-Wimberley House (listed on the National Registry of Historical Places in 2002) and the WimberleyHughes House (listed as a Texas Historic Landmark in 2016). These two homes were incremental in the establishment of Wimberley as a mill and ultimately as a town.

Wimberley started as a trading post settlement near Cypress Creek in 1848, the year Hays County was organized. After William Carvin Winters built a gristmill at the site in 1856, it took on the name “Winters’ Mill.” When the mill was sold in 1864 to the Cude family, its name was changed to “Cude’s Mill.”

The mill was sold again in 1874 to Pleasant Wimberley and took on his name. Over the years, it was expanded to process lumber, shingles, flour, molasses, and cotton. The mill is gone now, but the historical houses survive.

In 1880, Alfred vom Stein, a postmaster from San Marcos, applied to have a post office established in the community, calling it “Wimberleyville.” His application was granted, but the name shortened to Wimberley. Wimberley Institute of Cultures was born from the celebration of the Texas Sesquicentennial in 1986. The WIC founders were responsible for organizing the Bluebonnet Ball, which was the first of 12 monthly events designated by the Wimberley Chamber to mark the celebration of the Sesquicentennial. Theysaw the need for an organization to facilitate community events that would promote local historical awareness.

As a result, WIC received a State Charter and an IRS number as a nonprofit corporation in 1987. The charter was granted to WIC for the purpose of educating the public in the history and prehistory of the Wimberley area.

WIC works to foster interest in the historical, natural and cultural resources of the Wimberley Valley through educational and social programs involving both young and adult members of the community. WIC owns and operates the Winters-Wimberley House, now the Wimberley Valley Museum, and the Wimberley-Hughes House. Both of these are located just down from the Community Center.

Join WIC for an evening of food and fun at Fischer Hall, Sunday November 6, 2022 from 6 pm to 10 pm. Tickets must be purchased in advance at www.wimwic.org. For more information, call Tom & Debra Billups 512-965-2662.

Melanie

Norman was born and raised in Wimberley and worked as a nurse after college before taking time off to be a stay-at-home mom. After her youngest started kindergarten, Melanie was thinking about what to do next, whether to return to nursing or do something completely different.

“I’ve always enjoyed fashion, keeping up with fun outfits that are trending, putting together different outfits with a few basic pieces and accessories,” she says.

A clothing boutique seemed like something she could really put her passion and energy into, so that’s what she did five years ago last May with the grand opening of Vintage Lily Boutique. “We love what we do,” Melanie says, “ and we get excited about making sure we have the latest clothing, accessories and jewelry for our customers.”

Vintage Lily Boutique provides options from classic to trendy so regardless of age, shape or budget, the odds are there’s something that will appeal to almost everyone. “When we’re buying products, we look for something that’s different from what every other store has,” Melanie says, “we search through thousands of styles to put together collections that are effortless, simple and fresh.”

Melanie explains that the Los Angeles fashion district is headquarters for all of the vendors who send representatives with selected merchandise to the big fashion markets held in major cities across the country like Dallas, Atlanta and Las Vegas. “We fly to L.A and walk the blocks lined with stores searching for exceptional items that may not make it to the other shows,” Melanie says, “it’s not at all glamorous, it’s a very busy process checking out all these downtown showrooms.” The effort pays off with carefully curated boutique clothing that you won’t find in department stores. Some of their favorite stores for unique contemporary styles are Flying Monkey (for jeans), Wishlist and Paper Crane.

The boutique’s primary focus is on dresses and statement pieces, with many vintage-inspired styles that are reminiscent of fashions from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, including minis and midis, baby doll and tube dresses, wrap-front, with details like smocking, and loose, flowing “boho” jumpsuits and rompers. The loose-fitting, mineral washed T-shirt dresses and graphic tees are always in high demand. Until the mid 1970s, the T-shirt was still considered underwear, but today it’s a classic in women’s fashion. “We fell in love with them,” Melanie says of the graphic tees that are constantly restocked and introduced with new designs.“We bought a few, sold out then quickly restocked, sold out again.”

Mineral wash is a variation of bleach dying that gives a vintage weathered look to graphic tees, T-shirt dresses and

some of the denim outfits, hearkening back to the acid and stone washed jeans from the 1960s and 1970s.

What’s new in fashion for Fall 2022? Melanie says “earth tones (clay, green, brown, blue and rust) and oversize tops,” like the roomy waffle and cotton shackets (shirt/jacket). The ever-popular vegan leather Western Fringe purse never goes out of style, and for this season’s trendy outfits, the Nashville Nights Collection shines a spotlight on sequined shorts, dresses and joggers.

At the end of each season, the boutique has an interactive and entertaining form of the more traditional seasonal sales. Items are shown, modeled and described on Facebook and

The Inn at Sunset Mill The gift of hospitality in a beautiful setting

Diana

Allen shares happy memories of the first time she and her husband, Lynn, stayed at a bed and breakfast in a beautiful old farmhouse in South Haven, across the street from Lake Michigan, “It was early summertime and the windows were open. The smells from the lake air, the peach potpourri in our room, and the kitchen aromas of freshly baked bread and muffins, were heavenly.”

Most important though was the innkeeper’s gift for hospitality. “She made us feel like part of the family,” Diana says, “and I thought that I’d like to do this some day.” It was a dream that stayed with them through the years, and the Inn at Sunset Mill Ranch, which has been open for business for one year, is testament to that dream.

Sunset Mill Ranch evokes an earlier era with stone and cedar buildings, high ceilings, exposed wood, long covered porches and other architectural features reminiscent of historic Texas Hill Country homes built more than a century ago. This is a place to relax, walk the trails and listen to the birds, rock on the front porch in the evening and watch the sun go down.

Lynn and Diana grew up in Centralia, a small town in Southern Illinois. “We were high school sweethearts,” Diana says, “we got married young and worked to put each other through college.” In 1998, they moved to The Woodlands in Texas after Lynn accepted a job offer. While living and working in Houston (Lynn in the energy and power industry, Diana in the oil and gas business with Anadarko Petroleum), they discovered the unparalleled appeal of the Texas Hill Country and cool little towns like Wimberley. They fell in love with the area, visiting whenever they could get away and inevitably purchasing 25 acres. “The process of clearing the land, which was covered in cedars,” Diana says, “ revealed the visually pleasing landscape with clusters of lovely old trees and a most impressive view.”

About 10 years ago, they built a two-bedroom cabin with a fireplace, kitchen and porch, where they stayed when visiting the area. Winters Mill Cabin, as it became known, is one of the accommodations at the inn, along with three second-floor suites in the Carriage House, and it set the standard for the “rustic elegance” style. (Group rentals include two additional bedrooms in the Main Lodge in addition to the cabin and the Carriage House units.)

In the 1850s, Wimberley had a grist mill, tannery, store, shoe shop, and a school that was also used as a church and meeting hall. By the 1870s, it also had a blacksmith. By 1880, the Post Office was set up.

By 1900, nine houses were built around the square. By the 1920s, the county finally started to improve roads in and out of the village (the road to San Marcos was paved in 1921). By 1939, electricity was available. The population tripled from 1880 to 1947, based on estimates by the Post Office, to a little more than 400 people.

Diana has always enjoyed home decorating, cooking and entertaining. She is modest about her obvious talent for creating simple but spectacular interiors by seamlessly mixing old and new furnishings and accessories in such a seemingly effortless way that it’s impossible to imagine a better look. “I have friends who are great decorators,” she says, “I learned a lot from them and I’m always on the hunt for great antiques.” Usually it’s a treasured antique, a desk or mirror or lamp, that provides inspiration for decorating each room. A gorgeous blue antique stove is the centerpiece of the breakfast room. A long farm table with benches and primitive pie safe with punched metal doors, complement the simple, rustic theme.

“We’ve been collecting antiques for many years, since the early days of our marriage,” Diana says, “The first two pieces we acquired came from my great grandparents and we fell in love with old stuff at that time,” Diana says. The china cabinet is in the Winters Mill Cabin and an oak dresser is in one of the Maggie suite rooms in the main house. The dressers in the Sunset Room and many of the other antiques are French Country. Newer purchases, like the reproduction iron beds and cowhide rugs, always look completely at home with the antiques.

Diana gets many compliments for the delicious country breakfasts and special treats she prepares.

A breakfast menu might include a veggie quiche with spinach and green chilis, roasted rosemary potatoes and fruit. Other favorite dishes she enjoys serving are homemade biscuits and gravy, and raisin french toast. But wait...there’s more. Beginning in the afternoon, guests are treated to complimentary homemade sweet/savory snacks like scones, muffins or cakes. “I wanted the dining area to be a special place like grandma’s kitchen where you just walk in and get a special treat,” Diana says.

The Allens started staying in bed and breakfasts in 1987 and have stayed in many over the years. Diana says, “We learned from each one and now we want our guests to experience the best of all that we have learned.” Like the innkeeper at the old farmhouse on the lake, Diana and Lynn have the “gift of hospitality,” the best quality an innkeeper can possess. The Budaful Hiker Wimberley’s hiking store with a social mission

Andrew and Holly Maxwell came up with the idea to open a “hiking store with a social mission” while driving home to Texas from New Mexico several years ago. It may have seemed like an oddly specific and possibly crazy idea with little chance of success to some, but the couple saw things differently and their vision became reality.

The Budaful Hiker store in Wimberley sells outdoor clothing and hiking gear, everything anyone could possibly need for outdoor adventures, but this is only the first step toward the Maxwells’ larger mission of encouraging people to get off the couch, go outside and spend a lot more time outdoors. To foster a stronger sense of community, group hikes are scheduled every week.

The hikes are a great way to get exercise, enjoy nature and spend time with our fellow human beings. “They’re beginner level hikes over beginner level terrain that last about 1-1/2 hours,” Andrew says, “whoever shows up is welcome, sometimes there are two to four people, but there have been as many as twenty.” There’s also a quarterly hike that lasts longer and the group goes out together for a meal after the hike.

Although Andrew enjoyed sports when he was younger, he didn’t become particularly interested in the outdoors, hiking and camping until he attended Ferrum College, located near the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. With so many scenic trails for biking and hiking and the mountains just footsteps from the trails, “it was impossible not to get involved in outdoor activities,” Andrew says.

Andrew finished his college years at Texas Tech which is

where he met his future wife, Holly. Since she is a Texan, Andrew is a Texan too. “I wasn’t allowed to leave,” he says. They make a formidable duo and clearly have natural talent as entrepreneurs, with several businesses besides The Budaful Hiker, including the ice cream shop next door to the hiking store (Monster Treats) and Natural Tribute.

“My passion was recreation therapy, how nature impacts people and how human beings are naturally attracted, drawn to spend time in green spaces,” Andrew says, “I wanted to do something related to the therapeutic benefit of being outdoors.”

When Holly and Andrew make buying trips to trade shows specializing in the Outdoor Industry, they look for little subsections, “not the biggest or most popular brands” with products that are in line with the store’s mission, although some of their earlier finds, like Cotopaxi (an adventure and apparel company based in Salt Lake City, Utah) are much bigger names now. They look for companies that are environmentally friendly and give back to the community in various ways such as using recycled materials or donating a portion of profits to charity.

Natural Tribute sells hand drawn art work including stickers and shirts designed by Andrew to connect and inspire people with nature. He has teamed up with several non-profits and is using his art to raise money and awareness. “I was 34 years old when I discovered that I liked drawing,” Andrew says, and this opened up opportunities that he never expected.

One of Andrew’s drawings helps Earthviews raise money for the Puget Sound Project through sales of T-shirts, hats and stickers that feature the Salmon design. This conservation campaign, one of Earthviews’ many conservation projects, helps to protect the habitat for salmon, oysters, clams, orcas, and hundreds of other important marine specimens.

Purchases of Owl stickers give back through another non-profit partnership, San Antonio-based Black Outside, Inc. that serves to reconnect Black/African-American youth to the outdoors with culturally relevant outdoor experiences like overnight camping and day trips to nearby state parks. Finally, the sales of Andrew’s Elk design goes to help ELK, an Environmental Learning center for Kids in Denver, Colorado. ELK helps a diverse community develop a love for the outdoors and a desire to protect the environment.

Our connection to nature is more important than most people realize and spending time in green spaces is essential to our humanity. The Budaful Hiker is a reminder that too many of us live sedentary lives, with far too much time inside the house or workplace, watching Netflix and television, playing video games and following myriad links down rabbit trails in a digital world. The natural world is calling us to unplug, come out and play, hike, explore, and remember how good it feels to be outside.

Genesis Beauty Company

... where beauty’s much more than skin deep

We’ve

all heard the old adage about beauty only being “skin deep.” Well, that may be true for some but, as one successful area practitioner of esthiology knows, cultivating a healthy exterior often equally enhances the condition of one’s emotional and physical state too. Or in other words, “looking good can make you feel good as well!” Just skin deep? Not at Wimberley’s remarkable (and definitely rejuvenating) new spa, the Genesis Beauty Company!

Founded in 2021 and solely operated by respected, veteran esthetician Sharla Edmondson, the Aveda Institute-trained and state certified (skin) specialist has spent the past year and a half helping a diverse area clientele achieve exciting results that not only provide stunning cosmetic benefits but can also affect one’s overall wellbeing. With a wide range of (modern as well as traditional holistic) treatment therapies available, working “from the epidermis inward” can alleviate stress-related issues while enriching our “outer selves.” And as an added benefit, the processes involved can be incredibly soothing as well. Aah, that’s nice!

So, what’s an exceptional therapeutic Eden doing in bucolic Wimberley? It’s simple. Sharla, an East Texas farm girl who later moved to Austin with her husband (whose folks live nearby in Dripping Springs) missed the small-town feel. Some years back, that yen resulted in the joyful relocation to bucolic Wimberley where she and her growing family quickly embraced their adopted community and were equally welcomed in return – as a family and, more recently, she as a highly-skilled and nurturing provider of skin rejuvenation at her now muchpatronized Genesis Beauty Company.

But just what is Esthiology? Basically, it’s the science of all things skin, regarding care. For Sharla’s clientele, that can mean exquisite facials that include waxing, dermaplaning, Gua Sha (more on that later) as well as lash and brow services. As Sharla relates, “When providing a facial I only use a medicalgrade, chemical-free holistic skin line that I pair with different modalities like oxygen treatments, microdermabrasion, nanoneedling or microcurrent – really, whatever it takes to ensure the positive outcomes that my clients expect.” And based on her growing repeat business at Genesis, she, professionally speaking, has become quite the go-to gal, especially with Wimberley’s discerning ladies – but you guys are welcome too!

And, as mentioned earlier, a lot of Genesis’ focus goes beyond a client’s appearance. As a practitioner of Gua Sha (an ancient Chinese facial massage), by using various stone tools, she can “untangle and iron out muscle fascia and connective tissue” that can aid in the elimination of headaches, congestion as well as lymphatic drainage in the face and neck. Sharla explains, “With Gua Sha, healing energy is moved through the body, improving circulation, curbing stress and strengthening one’s overall sense of wellbeing.” The beneficial results can usually be felt (and seen) immediately. Yep, that truly is looking good and feeling good!

Couple the wonderful therapies available at Genesis with its intimate treatment facility and a visit really does become something special. At only 300 square-feet of primarily naturally-lit working space enhanced with a relaxing décor that is further complemented by large windows overlooking natural greenspaces and it’s easy to see why guests so positively react to the comforting atmosphere further enriched by Sharla’s warm personality. Each variable-length session is one-on-one and privacy is assured. Peace reigns!

So, have you been kind of cranky lately? Maybe you’re not liking what you’re seeing in the mirror in the morning and think it’s time for a tune-up. Well, Genesis Beauty Company might just be what you need because “beauty really can be more than skin deep.”

Find a community-centered gathering place at Social on the Square

Three

years ago, Derek and Michele Woods made the move from Austin, where Derek owned a landscape and design business, to Wimberley where they had family and friends and Michele had owned and operated a popular coffee shop, Sip on the Square, since 2010. After the disruptions and uncertainties in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, exploring new opportunities in Wimberley seemed like the right move. They opened Social on the Square, a wine bar and event center, a year ago last month on August 18, and the future looks bright for this communitycentered business.

The large courtyard and outdoor seating area has been redesigned and beautifully landscaped. “For the courtyard, they ripped up the asphalt for a total renovation,” Derek says. The two story building is a newer addition to the horseshoe cluster of shops and art gallery, with construction finished only a few months before Derek moved in. “We started with a nearly empty slate,” he says, “the owners put the floors in, but 95% of the wine bar’s design, the tile, the paint, furnishings and décor is a reflection of our vision.

Derek wanted a place that would appeal to the local community. He says, “Wimberley is such a tourist town that sometimes it seems like the locals get lost in the mix.” After all, for years the mantra has been “Wimberley is a great place to visit and an even better place to live.”

By paying a little more attention to the hometown folks, Social creates an inviting space for “regulars,” a place where, like the iconic bar featured in the ’80s television series Cheers, “everyone knows your name,” but even if they don’t, the atmosphere is familiar and welcoming. Open later than many spots in town, the environment is casual and friendly. This is a place to meet up regularly with friends for a beer or glass of wine. At the same time, Social feels upscale with its classy interior and champagne on the menu. There’s no other place in Wimberley quite like this.

Social offers an extensive selection of wines from all over the world. Derek says small towns in the Hill Country often focus primarily or even exclusively on Texas wines because Texas has many vineyards and wineries in this area. “We offer some Texas wines,” he says, “but we also bring in wines from other countries like Italy and France, Australia and South Africa.” (Beer on tap, sangria, mimosas, champagne and other drinks are also available)

Derek and Michele have an excellent wine representative who seeks out and brings them many different vintages to sample. They have their own wine tastings to personally select which ones to add to the menu, rotating in and out so there’s always something new to try. “I think it’s important to provide an interesting and diverse selection of of drinks,” Derek says, “we also get feedback from the public – that’s one of the best ways to know what people like.”

SOCIAL ON THE SQUARE, from page 26

It’s always exciting to try something new. Social on the Square doesn’t schedule any formal wine tastings, but they’re happy to let customers have samples when they’re trying to decide what to order. There’s also the “wine flight” with smaller servings of any four wines the customer chooses, and tasty “light bites” (southern pimiento cheese, garlic hummus, charcuterie plate) all prepared in-house.

The upstairs area, furnished with sofa and lounge chairs, is another comfortable seating area open to all; however this space can also be rented for private special events like club meetings and birthdays or other celebrations. Live music enhances the ambiance and creates a warm and relaxed setting that promotes socialization. There’s live music at Social late afternoons and early evenings on the weekends. After a summer music concert series, the music starts again in September with Texas State student Cameron Albright, a very talented musician, and folk-Americana singer-songwriter Hannah Swann. Unique partnership provides benefits for many at Freedom Canines

Freedom

Canines International (FCI) is a wonderful Wimberley-based organization whose primary function is to breed, highly train and then, ultimately place (at no charge) remarkably caring service dogs with individuals in need of special assistance. Definitely a very worthwhile undertaking that positively affects so many participants – two and fourfooted. But, the benefits don’t stop there. Since 2018, FCI has partnered with Wimberley High School allowing eager and receptive young students to become involved, as well, sharing in this transformative effort where animal and human bond to the immense value of each.

Freedom Canines International is the creation of husbandand-wife team Becky and Todd Kier. The animal-loving pair, independently of each other, have been in the service dog business for more than two decades working as breeders, trainers, teachers and administrators around the world and together, have placed more than 100 exceptional animals skilled in aiding people challenged with a variety of conditions. Becky, originally from the Waco area and degreed in animal sciences, and Todd, a British Columbian with a background in education, met serendipitously at an industry conference 20 years ago, and developed a close friendship. Then like so many other couples having similar dreams and interests, they saw their relationship reach a higher level that culminated in marriage and relocation to Wimberley. In tandem, as they established a new household, they also were able to fulfill their joint vision of founding an organization solely dedicated to the raising and placement of service dogs. Hence FCI.

But, like so many other fledgling enterprises, logistics could prove to be problematic. For Becky and Todd, even with their extensive skills and experience, operating a demanding animalintensive enterprise within their modest home didn’t seem practical. Quite frankly, FCI lacked the facilities for training and educational purposes. And then there was the need for supporting personnel as well? What to do?

Enter the local high school! Four years ago, FCI and the Wimberley ISD reached an agreement where enrolled students in the agricultural department would assist with FCI’s mission of service dog development while furthering their educational requirements. The results have been quite satisfactory for all involved, allowing new skills to be acquired among the students while providing FCI with a unique resource in manpower and facility requirements. But, the biggest beneficiaries are the animals and, of course, those who will receive these future, indispensable companions.

So, what is involved? Becky and Todd provide the dogs (puppies actually and usually Labrador retrievers born at the Kier’s home) that will be used in the program. After that, volunteer students, overseen by the Kiers, become “puppy

FREEDOM

raisers” nurturing the playful youngsters through the first months of their lives within each student’s individual home. Later, as the dogs mature, higher levels of training ensue, on campus and elsewhere. Eventually, as each animal progresses and is put on a specific career path, further “fine tuning” occurs (primarily by the Kiers but with student help) infusing a competency that completes the dog’s future role.

Afterwards, a one-on-one bonding period with the actual end-user (client) takes place. And, the range of specialized abilities acquired by each dog can be amazing – from diabetic care to object retrieval to hearing-assistance and on and on. Each animal ultimately becomes a “customized” extension of the client truly allowing both to live fuller, freer lives.

In closing, a symbiosis is created between FCI and its student participants that mirrors what develops between the “finished” service dog and its new partner. All are stronger for the shared experience and, that’s pretty wonderful. Freedom Canine International, the students, the recipients, the actual service dogs and even, greater Wimberley, all benefit. Arf, arf!

Photos courtesy Freedom Canine International.

FYI • For more information about Freedom Canine International, the Kiers, the service dogs and their relationship with Wimberley ISD, visit the comprehensive website at freedomcanines.com. FCI is a non-profit organization and relies on donations of time and money. October 29, 2022, FCI hosts a fun dog-walk fundraiser in Wimberley. Come, bring your pooch and join in. Others (besides students) with an interest may participate in puppy raising. Contact FCI for details.

Her 25+ years’ experience and knowledge of the market provides the highest level of service for her clients. “It’s work I love. There is nothing else I’d rather do, she says.

“There are challenges to working in a rural market, but I thrive on those challenges. Every property is unique and interesting. I love problem solving and helping my clients.” Well, septic and Oak wilt inspections are typical occurrences for Barbara, but to urban agents they can be foreign.

A local market expert and a Texas Monthly “Five Star Real Estate Agent” for the last 13 years, it is obvious Barbara loves her career and is eager to help buyers and sellers. Her clients definitely count on her expertise, but they also love her approach. “We interviewed several agents, but we wanted someone we could connect with,” says one client. “Barbara walked in the door, and her enthusiasm and attention to detail won us over. She’s definitely the reason we were able to finalize the sale.”
