Hillcrest’s Fresh Breeze Campaign Hillcrest’s Fresh Breeze Campaign kicks off with a banquet during Homecoming week. By Chris Christenson

On October 2, at 5 p.m., a campaign that has been operating behind the scenes for the last two years will finally come out into the spotlight. Hillcrest’s very own Fresh Breeze Campaign is kicking off its “public phase” with a special banquet for alumni, friends, and donors. What is Fresh Breeze? Fresh Breeze is a fund raising campaign that was started about two years ago to meet some current needs here at Hillcrest. The goal: five million dollars. The campaign’s aim is to raise money for, among other things,

paying off the debt on the Student Activity Center, revamping the classrooms, and replacing the school’s heating and air-conditioning systems. “We have just completed the quiet

phase, which means we’ve reached over 60 percent of our goal,” said President Steve Brue, the leader of the Fresh Breeze team. During

the quiet phase, individuals were contacted and asked if they would like to take part in the campaign through donation. Now the time has come for the public phase. The hope for this phase, which begins with the banquet, is that the rest of the money can be raised from Hillcrest alumni and friends in the Fergus Falls area and beyond. “It’s a pretty big effort, and it’s going to cost a lot of money. But we’re optimistic that the money’s going to come in,” said Brue.

You’re Dormed! Students aren’t the only new arrivals in the girls dorm. By Annalise Boyum

The girls dorm has five new arrivals to serve as deans for the girls this year. Nancy Stender is the only dean who was here last year. Kristen Erickson from Detroit Lakes, MN is a returning dean from 2007-08, so this job is not new, except that now she is the head dean. But for Laura Skaret and Lisa Sevetz from East Hartland, CT; and Meghan Berge and Rebecca Brandon from Fergus Falls, MN this job is completely new. Laura Skaret said, “I’m really excited to have this opportunity to take part in the ministry of Hillcrest.” Lisa Sevetz said, “I’m so excited to be the 20-year-old mother of 50 teenage girls. I love them all so much already!” Kristen Erickson said, “I’ve enjoyed Page 2

not only getting to know the girls in the dorms, but also seeing all the new friendships forming between them. We have a really great group of girls and I’m excited to see what God will do this year.” Meghan Berge said, “It’s been really fun getting to know the girls and the deans.” Becky Brandon said, “I believe that God has planned for each girl to be here this year at Hillcrest and for us [deans] to encourage, pray, and love them throughout the year.” Becky Brandon Nancy Stender said, “In the year that I started as an R.A.., the HLA Today didn’t do any articles on the

newbies, so I’ve never been in the HLA Today! I love working here in the dorm and being able to mentor and build relationships with these girls.”

TIDBITS

They are the group of people that make life more fun. By Wil Twedt

The student council is a group of student leaders, picked out by the student body, who set the pace for the school year by arranging activities. They are the ones who lead icebreakers and bridge the gap between students in the beginning of the year. They plan and run homecoming and all of the other events of the year. But other than that, what is it that drives the selected few to do what they do? Mr. Peterson, art teacher and student council adviser, said, “I think that they care about what direction the school is going and want

to contribute to the spiritual strength of the student body. They also want to make it an exciting and engaging experience for all of their class mates. I, personally, enjoy getting to know everyone in the school, and like helping the student council with that.”

There’s No Place Like Home Anticipation grows as students prepare for Homecoming week. By Chris Christenson

Actors studying their scripts, designers flexing their artistic muscles, huddles of excited girls holding whisper conferences about jerseys… the connection? Homecoming. That’s right, it’s that time of year again, and Homecoming Twenty-Ten promises to live up to its predecessors. Skit and poster committees from each class have been hard at work, readying their various contributions around this year’s theme, Cosmic Chaos. Student Government has also been busy with Homecoming prep, between Powder Puff organization and Volleyball Tournament coordination, there’s lots to do. However, there is one particular Homecoming tradition that, though it may not seem like it, often gets the most behind-the-scenes work: the dress-up days. Student-body President, Taylor Brue, voiced the thoughts of many when she said that the themed dressup days were what she looked forward to the most.

Christina Hardie got her car TP’d. Theo Taylor scored two touchdowns in the varsity game. Frankie Sandnes will be playing the triangle for the choir concert. Jacob Jones sang Happy Birthday to himself in chapel. Wilner Twedt wore skinny jeans on Monday. Andrew Stender wears sleeves on his head at volleyball games. Comet and Rocket Super Fans got together to present a skit between volleyball games. Josh Simpson scared a little kid at a volleyball game while wearing his Spider Man suit.

When a person is walking down the halls of HLA on any given day, they may see a whole lot of red, black, and white. That means there is a game going on that day, which a Hillcrest sports team may have. If it’s the volleyball team, a person from the team may be seen with a white sweatshirt with “game day” on the back. If it’s the football team a person may see black sweatshirts with “Hillcrest Comets Football” on them. They may even see soccer jerseys

Robotics Putting their skills to the test. By Frankie Sandnes

Hillcrest Academy has had robotic team for three years. The team consists of Aeron Jahr, Cody Joy, Luke Joy, Brandon Doering, and Kris Lein. The science teacher, Mr. Jahr, is leading the team. The robotics team meets every day after school. Their goal is to construct a robot that can perform a number of different tasks. They started preparations in the beginning of the year, and Cody Joy said they have a lot more work to do before the competition, which will be held in the Fargo Civic AuditoPage 4
