GREETING

Dear Alumni and Friends, A new year has arrived. We’ve taken down our 2013 calendars and replaced them with 2014’s. It is natural to look back, look around, and look ahead when the yearly calendar changes. What happened in 2013? What’s going on now? What do we look forward to in 2014? For Hillcrest, the year 2013 marked another renovation project on the Hillcrest campus with the completion of the classroom section above the “old gym” (we need to give that a better name!). It also gave 42 high school seniors a new shared title, “HLA Alumni of the Class of 2013.” Both of these great accomplishments are recorded in this issue. What’s going on now? The second semester begins with 210 students enrolled at Hillcrest Academy. The Hillcrest Board begins the calendar year with a fairly new group of board members. We welcome three new board members Eric Ewan, Kathy Heggland, and Mark Soholt, to the 9-member Hillcrest Board. We are completing a self-study as we renew our accreditation with Minnesota Non-public Schools Accrediting Association. We are busy – teachers, students, staff, and administrators. And if temperatures remain the same as the time of this writing, we are cold!

MAKE A DIFFERENCE AT HILLCREST IN 2014

What lies ahead in 2014? A School Strategic Plan will be prepared, with written action steps to achieve those goals over the next seven years. The senior class of 2014 will finalize coursework in preparation for graduation weekend, May 23-25, 2014. We will make appeals to meet our Annual Fund goal of $415,000 which subsidizes tuition costs for all students who attend Hillcrest. We’re not half way there yet so are trusting God to provide through our Alumni and friends. We’d love to see 25 new members join one of our HLA Giving Clubs which would put us over the 300 club member mark. Looking back, looking around, and looking ahead, it is very assuring to know that “Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) He is the source of our purpose and our joy. We have a hopeful 2014! Wishing you a blessed and wonderful new year!

Steven J. Brue, HLA President p.s. – Many of you partnered with Hillcrest financially over the past five years to help us meet the $5 million goal of the “Fresh Breeze” Campaign. Thank you for investing in the future of Hillcrest Lutheran Academy! God bless you!

Re

ing Renovation

The Fresh Breeze Campaign has come to a successful completion and every advancement initiative has been achieved, culminating in a stunning renovation of the classroom wing at Hillcrest.

FEATURE Opposite: The hallway buzzes with activity during passing time. Transom windows and classroom light wells have been restored and reinstalled to maintain the classic aesthetic. | Right Top: New lockers are appropriately sized for student belongings and carpet greatly reduces hallway noise. | Right Bottom: The chemistry lab has received new storage, plumbing and fixtures.

“For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues throughout all generations.” Ps. 100:7 The words of Psalm 100 took on special meaning this past Thanksgiving, recalling God’s faithfulness in allowing Hillcrest’s recent completion of the classroom renovation project. The work was done over the summer, and was ready for students as school started this past August. With this work completed, all of the objectives of the Fresh Breeze campaign have been met. God has been faithful over these past five years, blessing each of the initiatives of this campaign! Alumni and friends attended an Open house over Homecoming Weekend in the newly renovated classroom environment. A dedication service concluded the afternoon event in the HLA Media Center, led by President Steve Brue. Campaign Chairman Olav Sandnes, Honorary Chairman Elling Halvorson, and HLA Board Chairman Todd Mathison each shared in the short program. Summary of renovated work: • New HVAC system, with zoning controls in each classroom. • All electrical work updated and upgraded in wall cavities, and new sheetrock on all walls, taped, and painted. • New network wiring infrastructure and managed wireless access points.

"The renovation project boasted a complete upgrade to all systems for a safe, efficient, climate controlled learning environment, while respecting and maintaining the classic look of the original architectural style."

STEWARDSHIP

Charitable CONNECTION A Series on Creative Giving

CONSIDER A GIFT OF REAL ESTATE Gifts of highly appreciated real estate are often an excellent means to make a charitable gift. The gift value is determined by an appraisal if the value of the property exceeds $5,000. The donor receives a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the property (regardless of their cost or basis in it). The charity may then sell the property for its full market value and may use the entire proceeds in support of its mission. CONSIDER THIS EXAMPLE: The Bensons own 60 acres of farmland adjacent to the city. Recently, they have been approached about selling 40 acres of their property for $400,000. They purchased those 40 acres nearly 40 years ago for $5,000 and would face a large capital gains liability were they to sell the land outright. But Mr. and Mrs. Benson have often thought about making a significant gift to Hillcrest and it now appears that this may be an appropriate gift asset to benefit both Hillcrest and themselves. By giving the property to Hillcrest (who may then sell it to the interested buyer), the Bensons wlil receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value ($400,000) of the property. While their income tax deduction is limited to 30% of their adjusted gross income, they will have the year of the gift plus five additional years of carryforward to use up the allowable deduction. They may also choose to sell another portion of land outright which wlll have a substantial capital gains liability. However, the charitable deduction from the Hillcrest gift may also be used to offset the capital gains obligation on that sale. For more ideas, visit www.ffhillcrest.org/creative-giving

Heritage society The HLA Heritage Society acknowledges those who have named Hillcrest in an estate gift. Stanley Arlton Estate The Fresh Breeze campaign Irv & Kay Bergsagel provides an opportunity for friends William Colbeck Estate of Hillcrest to name the school as Keven & Debbie Crabtree a beneficiary in their estate plans. Evelyn Ebner Estate This is one of the ways that donors Joel & Barbara Egge may participate in the campaign, Marian Egge Estate through a deferred gift. Already, Mabel L. Foss Estate the campaign has on record over Rich & Karen Iverson $1 million that will be gifted through Selma Langeland Estate estate plans. While estate amounts Myrtle Nilsen Estate that are designated for Hillcrest John & Donna Olson are not included in the campaign Glenn & Yvonne Rogness goal, a record of these future gifts LaWayne & Beverly Rogness helps to ensure future support for Dwight & Gwen Schmidt the school. It also gives Hillcrest Lisa Schultz-Fred the opportunity to thank families Norma Senum who choose to name Hillcrest in Ethan Windahl their estate planning. We would love to include any who have named Hillcrest in their estate plans. Please contact President Steve Brue at 218-739-3371 to discuss this further.

PROFILE

CROSSING CULTURES HAN GAO'S STORY

PROFILE Han Gao is 1 of 8 Chinese students at Hillcrest Academy. His background is typical of the new foreign student population. In almost every case these students are learning to reconcile their culture and past experiences with the Truth of Jesus Christ. Han’s story is one of many we are excited to share. Han, like many foreign students at Hillcrest, is accomplished in his home country. Ranking in the top 10 out of 400 students is a significant feat in the Chinese educational system. As Han progressed in primary school his parents sought to expand his education. He moved from the traditional Chinese setting to a prestigious boarding school in Boston, MA. Han’s junior year in Boston was challenging. Placed in a classroom with 30 Chinese students, Han’s supposed American experience was little more than a competitive Chinese program on American soil. However, his challenging junior year was near devastating for other reasons. Prior to the start of the spring semester Han’s beloved father died from a heart attack. Mr. Gao was an engineer who led a team in creating a power plant for their community. A hometown hero, Han remembers his dad as a driven father who sought to do his best and impact people in a positive way. The tragedy led Han to withdraw from school in Boston to grieve with his mother in China. In working through the mourning process, Han’s mother suggested Han attend Hillcrest Academy. According to Han his mother wanted him to have a faith to aid in processing the loss of his father. Growing-up in communist China sheltered Han from the opportunity to hear the Gospel. Through his interview process at Hillcrest Han learned the commitment Hillcrest has in presenting the message of Jesus Christ in every academic discipline. Prior to Han’s introduction through the interview, he viewed Jesus as a “great guy”, garnering most of his knowledge of Christianity from his four month stint in Boston. Han began to see Jesus clearly after a short time at Hillcrest. Noticing the difference Jesus made in the lives of his friends, Han dove deeper, investigating the truth of Christianity. Han comments, “the greatest thing Hillcrest has encouraged me to do is reading my Bible. The teachers not only tell you about the Bible, but they tell you to go to the Bible yourself and read more.” And read the Bible is exactly what Han did his first year at Hillcrest. Han now identifies himself with Jesus Christ, noting the Christian perspective makes sense in answering the big

questions. However, one thing kept Han from completely giving himself to Jesus in his first year at Hillcrest. Quiet times of thinking drew Han’s attention to his father. In reading the scriptures, Han couldn’t resolve the issue of his father passing away prior to hearing the Gospel. A series of dark and lonely nights ensued with searching the Bible for answers. In stillness God answered Han’s prayer. As he was wrestling to answer his big question, Han sent his remaining parent a Bible. “I wanted to let my mom know (about Jesus) because I love her, but it’s hard to start the conversation…so what I did was I ordered a Bible online and sent it to my mom.” Mrs. Gao called Han weeks later saying she read Matthew and John and was very impressed. Han comments, “She is coming closer. She is absorbed by it so she reads the Bible a lot…so I think God is, He is really helping me to solve this hard problem.” Through mentorship, the Hillcrest faculty and staff have directed Han to find hope in Jesus. Knowing his father didn’t profess faith in Christ, steady counsel by friends and mentors has helped Han process the love of God in this challenging circumstance. Han notes one particular student who has been influential to him trusting Jesus at Hillcrest. “Matt (Filippini, HLA Senior) is one of the most important people for me coming to faith. Like when I was confused I would always talk to Matt, even sometimes that I think I can do it on my own, I still talk with Matt.” “I really have a lot of trouble in my life and I really worry about them.” Says Han. “But now I trust in the Lord and I know the Lord will give me guidance... The greatest evidence of this is my mom reading the Bible and she started coming to the faith. I prayed for that a lot and I didn’t know what to do, but I prayed that my mom could know more about the Lord and that’s coming true.” Han’s story offers a small window into the significant ministry Hillcrest has with international students. The student population has changed greatly over the years, yet the mission of Hillcrest remains the same. It's a place for students to build meaningful relationships, solidify their faith and receive Biblical training that equips them for a life of significance.

CAMPUS NEWS

WHERE DO THEY COME FROM? Derek Lillistolen East Hartland, Connecticut Derek’s father pulled almost half of the Hillcrest Band aside when they visited his church in April, 2011. Derek’s dad wanted to make sure that what he heard and read regarding Hillcrest was accurate. Following the exploration, Derek attended as a Junior and made an impact at Hillcrest in his first year. He was granted the position of student body chaplain by the faculty and administration and has taken on a leadership role in praise and worship chapel services.

suzy hoops Jackson, Mississippi Suzy traveled to Hillcrest with her parents last winter to visit. Despite the chilly weather, the Hoops family found Hillcrest warm and the faculty and staff with a special heart of care and concern. Suzy came to Hillcrest looking for a different high school experience. During her first semester in the castle Suzy has developed life-long friendships and continues to step out of her comfort zone by leading worship and joining the cheerleading squad.

Alejandro Garcia Mexico City, Mexico The first few hours at Hillcrest can be overwhelming, unless you’re Alejandro Garcia. Arriving at Hillcrest with his Father in August, Alejandro took to the dorms right away. While his Father settled matters, Alejandro began to explore and had made life-long friendships within the first week. Alejandro’s attitude has remained positive. His understanding of Jesus Christ is increasing as he spends time in Bible classes and with dormitory mentors.

Janaya Caines Pagent, Bermuda A transition to Minnesota from Bermuda would wipe the smile off anyone’s face, unless you’re Janaya Caines. Raised by her parents to know Jesus Christ, Janaya came to Hillcrest to increase her GPA while also rebuilding her relationship with Jesus. After her first semester at Hillcrest she is well on her way to achieving those goals.

Oleg Chernyshov St. Petersburg, Russia Oleg applied to Hillcrest this past summer, and as the seasons changed from fall to winter, he didn't seem to be phased by the precipitous fall into negative temperatures. Apparently, Oleg is no stranger to weather extremes. Attending school at Hillcrest is much different than his native Russia, but Oleg has committed to a spiritual search during his time at Hillcrest. Thankfully there is no shortage of friends and mentors to provide deep answers for serious questions that have arisen throughout Oleg’s first semester at Hillcrest.

Jason You Seoul, South Korea Attending school in Fergus Falls feels like a trip to Narnia for Jason You. He describes Seoul as a concrete jungle, while Hillcrest’s surrounding community with trees, lakes and farm fields is a treasured landscape that has been appreciated during his 3 years at Hillcrest. Through his holistic education in Hillcrest’s classrooms, dormitories and mission experiences, Jason is convinced of the truths of the Bible. His mission now is to communicate Jesus Christ to his parents, and he is finding a host of support from his mentors and friends at Hillcrest.

Feven Tadesse Adaba, Ethiopia Feven came to Hillcrest after a year in Kentucky. Facing some obstacles, Feven looked for a warm and loving dormitory environment. She found it at Hillcrest. Her goals of building community and growing close to influential young women have been evident. She is excelling both in her academic achievement and cross-cultural communication at Hillcrest.

FRESH FACES AT HLA

BRAD MARTINSON Brad was born and raised in the Rolette, ND area on a grain and cattle farm. He is one of 11 children born to Robert & Lorraine Martinson. After graduating from Rolette Public School in 1977, Brad went on to attend the University of North Dakota and received a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. He passed the CPA exam in 1982. The first nine years of Brad's career were spent in the Twin Cities working for a large public accounting firm, and later, two nonprofit organizations. Through a common involvement in Ebenezer Lutheran Brethren Church, Brad met and eventually married Trena Stensrud of Lake Mills, IA in 1989. Trena is a Registered Nurse.

KARA FISHER We are pleased to welcome Kara Fisher as the newest member of the HLA faculty. She teaches Junior High and High School math courses. Kara grew up in Fergus Falls and attended Fergus Falls High School. Kara graduated from the University of North Dakota in May of 2013 with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and a minor in Chemistry. She was a member of the UND women's swimming and diving team for all four years of her college career. Kara is an active member of Our Lady of Victory church in Fergus Falls and served this past fall as a volunteer coach for the Otter (Fergus Falls High School) girls swim team. In her spare time she enjoys reading.

In early 1990, Brad received an invitation to serve as Executive Director of Finance for the Church of the Lutheran Brethren. Sensing the Lord’s clear leading in that direction, Brad and Trena moved to Fergus Falls in April of 1990. They have subsequently been blessed with three children, two of which are now graduates of Hillcrest: Richard (H'10), Kathleen (H’13), and Thomas, currently in 9th grade at HLA. After 23 years serving as the CLB Finance Director, Brad accepted a position as HLA Business Manager and began his duties at HLA at the beginning of the current school year. In addition to his work and family life, Brad is actively involved at Bethel Lutheran Church as an Elder, Sunday School teacher and choir member. He also serves as co-treasurer for the Noon Kiwanis service club and as volunteer financial advisor and bookkeeper for Fergus Falls Dollars for Scholars. Brad still loves to get back up to the farm in North Dakota, especially during the summer, where he maintains a collection of vintage tractors with his siblings. He says they won't be running out of reasons to make the trek home anytime soon. "We have enough collector tractors, mostly unrestored Olivers and Minneapolis Molines, to fill the retirement years of all of us combined, and then some!"

GARY THOMPSON Gary Thompson was the first of 5 children born to Ray and Jean (Paulson) Thompson, and was raised in Froid, MT. During Gary’s high school years the family moved to Williston, ND where they became members at the Lutheran Brethren Church there. Gary’s father Ray attended Hillcrest, and his mother Jean Paulson was a Hillcrest graduate in 1947. It was not a surprise then that Gary would find his way to Fergus Falls to attend Hillcrest, and he graduated in 1968. All of his siblings either attended Hillcrest or the Lutheran Brethren Bible School. After Hillcrest, Gary attended the University of North Dakota in Williston. While in Williston, he also served for 7 years in the North Dakota National Guard. Gary’s working career has centered in the transportation industry. In 1978, while an oil boom was beginning in western North Dakota, Gary took a job driving a tank truck hauling crude oil and water, based out of Watford City, ND. Over the next 18 years, Gary worked for the Behm Family Corporation management team in various departments (sales, dispatch, maintenance and purchasing), and then finished his career as the General Manager of Power Fuels, Inc. in Minot, ND. While in Minot, the Thompsons were members of Our Redeemer’s LB Church, and Gary served on Our Redeemers Christian School Board. He also served as Afton Township supervisor and chairman in the community. Following a brief move to Blaire, Nebraska, Gary and his wife Dorinne moved to Fergus Falls where he worked

for Cargill as commercial manager at the Wahpeton, ND plant. At that time Dorinne was hired by LBS to work in the Alumni Office. In 2007, Gary partnered with two others to form Red Rock Transportation Inc. and he currently serves as the business manager/controller. The company hauls both crude oil and production water in the oil fields of the Williston basin or the Bakken oil fields. Gary and Dorinne have recently moved to Fargo, ND to give their full attention to this business. The Thompsons have 5 children, four of them Hillcrest graduates, and 8 grandchildren, one of whom just completed two years at the Hillcrest Junior High. Gary and Dorinne have shown strong commitment to supporting Hillcrest financially. Gary became part of the Fresh Breeze Campaign cabinet which has been a transformational agent in building a strong future for Hillcrest. And together, Gary and Dorinne have promoted and strengthened this school with their work, wealth, and wisdom.

DORINNE THOMPSON We also wish to thank and honor Gary's wife, Dorinne for her 15 years of service to LBS and Hillcrest Academy. Dorinne retired at the end of the 2012-13 school year.

HILLCREST BEGINS ACCREDITATION RENEWAL PROCESS Hillcrest is preparing for its 5th consecutive seven-year accreditation renewal process with Minnesota Non-public Schools Accrediting Association (MNSAA). Since joining in 1979, Hillcrest’s membership requires an intense selfstudy every seven years, guided by standards of compliance that promote a quality, efficient, safe and visionary educational environment. As part of the self-study, strengths and challenges are identified by the school within each standard set by MNSAA. The school then develops a School Strategic Plan, creating objectives, strategies, and action steps that direct the improvement of the school over the next seven years. In March of 2014, a team of educational professionals will visit Hillcrest to validate that Hillcrest is doing what it says it is doing under its mission of “equipping students in a Christ-centered, biblical environment for a life of significance.” They will review reflective narratives and artifacts of compliance provided by Hillcrest’s faculty, staff and administration. They will then submit to the MNSAA Board of Directors their recommendation. Accreditation is valued and important. Hillcrest receives the benefit of accountability to excellence, with the visionary component of making ongoing improvements for a quality Christian high school experience into the future.
