‘Hijacked’ victim lied >> Man charged with

perjury after false claim

KALISHA NAICKER

H

ILLCREST SAPS arrested a 20year-old man for defeating the ends of justice last week after it was found that he falsely claimed to have been hijacked. He was charged with perjury last week. SAPS provincial spokesperson, Colonel Jay Naicker, said on 23 April the suspect allegedly made a false statement, under oath, after claiming he had been hijacked and robbed of his vehicle by police officers. “The suspect claimed he was driving with a friend along Kassier Road in Hillcrest when they saw blue lights flashing and were instructed by police officers to stop,” said Naicker. “He claimed he was stopped by six officers in uniform who were in a

marked police vehicle. He alleged that the officers robbed him of his VW Golf, cash, wristwatch, cellphone and a jacket. The following day he reported the incident to Hillcrest police.” Naicker said Hillcrest detectives were immediately assembled to investigate the allegations. “After a thorough investigation, police established that the suspect and his friend lied about the events of the evening,” said Naicker. “It was established that on 23 April at 10pm, the suspect was driving along Kassier Road with his friend when the Durban Metro Police instructed him to stop. He sped off because he had unpaid traffic fines and later abandoned his vehicle in Hillcrest.” His vehicle was impounded and kept in the custody of the Metro police. He was arrested and charged with defeating the ends of justice and perjury. TURN TO PAGE 3

Fire destroys home >> Local family loses everything in blaze KALISHA NAICKER

Kalisha.Naicker@media24.com

A

FOREST Hills family has been left homeless after a fire tore through their dwelling last

week. Andreas Mathios, a member of South African Community Action Network (SA Can), who was on scene, reported that the fire started at around 5.45pm. Mathois said no one was injured in the blaze. “Unfortunately, one pet died, but the other three were saved,” said Mathios. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Teresa Jones, SACan case manager, said the family lost everything, including their belongings and most of the house itself.

“The family has requested that anyone who would like to help them should buy shopping vouchers (Pick n Pay, Pavilion, Game, Spar, etc.) rather than items, as this will allow them to buy what they need as and when it’s required. “This will help to cut down on duplicate donations,” said Jones. “They also need a three-bedroomed flat/cottage (semi-furnished and animal-friendly) to live in for the next eight to 12 months, while they decidehowtomoveforward. Theirinsurance will cover rental costs, so it won’t need to be rent-free.” Jones added that the family is grateful to everyone who has supported them during this difficult time. “They are overwhelmed by the generosity the community has shown,” said Jones. If you are able to offer assistance or if you need more information, call the SACan helpdesk number on 086 162 3646.

Perjury accused in the dock FROM PAGE 1 He will be appearing in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court soon. KZN SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said: “We cannot allow people to drag the

name of the SAPS through the mud to fulfill their criminal deeds. “Our job is to serve and protect the citizens of the country. It is disturbing that people open false cases and implicate police in crimes that did not occur.

JUSTICE was served at the Durban High Court last week when 32-year-old Nkanyiso Patrick Ndlovu was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of an elderly Hillcrest resident in June 2011. According to the Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, Lieutenant France Mkhize, the murder occurred on 2 June 2011, at about 6pm in the Embo area. “72-year-old Mhawukeleni Vilakazi was enjoying supper with his family when the armed man entered his house. “He [Vilakazi] was allegedly shot and sustained multiple guns-shot wounds and died at the scene. A case of murder was opened for investigation at the Hillcrest SAPS,” said Mkhize. Hillcrest SAPS detectives conducted an intensive investigation that led to the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of an AK47 rifle. Mkhize said the firearm was taken for ballistics testing and the results came back positive, linking the accused to the murder. “He made several court appearances and was convicted and sentenced this week to life imprisonment for murder.” KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the work done by the Hillcrest SAPS. “This will send out a strong message to criminals that the SAPS has adopted zero tolerance for crime.”

Mysterious organs – the vestibular apparatus THE vestibular apparatus is associated with the inner ear (organ of hearing). It controls the balance of the animal. It does this by sensing the movement of fluid in three semicircular canalas, each one oriented at 90 degrees to the others. At the base of these canals are little hairs that send signals to the brain about rotation of the head,

thereby guiding the movement of the eyes and actions of the muscles. At the base of these three canals are two additional fluid- and gelfilled areas, called the UTRICLE and the SACCULE, which work in a similar fashion to sense acceleration forces and gravity. Less is understood about how this works, and it is a fairly complex interaction between physics, and

physiology. Disease of the vestibular apparatus normally occurs in older dogs which get “Old dog vestibulitis”, which is often erroneously diagnosed and described as a “stroke”. The pet has a sudden head tilt, flicking of the eyes (nystagmus) and sometimes severe balance problems and nausea. The more severe cases may need hospitalisation to

treat them, much like attacks of the human Meniere’s disease. The problem tends to recur in affected animals, and may leave residual neurological deficits, but most dogs recover within a few days to a week. A common cause of balance issues is medication inserted into the ear canal when the eardrum is not intact, or ear cleaning procedures.

Billionaire funds cash-for-truth incentive DESIREE ERASMUS

B

REAKING: in a move called “dumb and incredibly dangerous”, members of the South African government who sit in executive positions have taken a unanimous vote to “tell the truth at all costs”. The decision allegedly materialised after an international billionaire funder – who will remain anonymous until some random 12-yearold hacks official emails – is said to

have pledged $1 million for each “truth” told in parliament and at public rallies and conferences. The move comes after the billionaire allegedly had the revelation while beating his head against a brick wall at the outcome of South Africa’s recent national election. Such was the enthusiasm of the nation’s public servants to “get involved and make a difference” through “Truthgate” that for the first time in its recorded history, all representatives stayed awake during the latest parliamentary sitting to vote. This included an 85-year-old political veteran who was allegedly in a coma for the past 20 years. Speaking after the voting session, one official started tallying on his fingers while telling the floor: “Comrades, I am happy with the outcome of the vote because it grates my biscuit to sit here and lie about hav-

Truthgate … gives me the opportunity to satisfy my Messiah complex and to emulate Oprah ing a master’s degree in politics. I am just a failed chef with a KFC fetish. Also, I am sick of calling everyone comrade; it’s very 1994.” A second official then took to the floor and, producing an abacus from her Prada handbag, stated: “Fellow countrymen and women, I am excited at the potential upliftment that can be achieved through Truthgate. “Finally I have a chance to tell my constituents that an overflowing sewage pipe alongside a crèche is not a health hazard – it is an opportunity for the community to pull together and shovel the sh*t them-

selves. The sh*t can then be used as a nice compost on the community vegetable garden that we may build for them in 2016 or 2017. “In the interim, the shovelled sh*t can be placed next to the roundabout and slide as a little climbing mountain for kiddies.” Speaking from uMhlanga after taking her vote via Skype during a botox party, oneofficialtoldtheFever: “The potential ramifications of Truthgate are enormous and heartening. “With Truthgate comes the opportunity to finally meet our millennium development goals – the ones that have been slightly tweaked for our area. Truthgate finally gives me the opportunity to satisfy my Messiah complex and to emulate Oprah by canvassing among the middle and working classes. I now feel no shame in donning my latex gloves so I can give sales assistants and domestic

workers a controlled pat on their cheap clothing. In fact, I can now unashamedly utilise public funds to book a five-star retreat and take potential future school-girl voters from the street there in order to give them free manicures and pedicures. “Looking good while you are getting educated can go a long way in building a girlchild’s prospects - this way she can marry rich and will hopefully never have to think independently again. You get one, I get one,we all get free manis and pedis.” UPDATE: The billionaire funder has since clarified that he will be paying those partaking in Truthgate in the Zimbabwean dollar, a defunct currency. People interviewed for this article have since denied any knowledge of Truthgate or making the above statements.

HE fifth annual Glitz & Glam Charity Ball, in association with Setzkorn Health and Wealth Consulting, and Discovery was held on Saturday, 26 April in the St Mary’s DSG hall. The theme was “Narnia” and the hall was decorated by the Grade 11 pupils for the matric dance the night before. The 150 guests were simply “blown away” by the splendour of the event. The evening was compered by Abi Ray of East Coast Radio and began with a performance by violinist and St Mary’s music scholarship student Nina Kolev, accompanied on piano by Lauren Rottcher. The three-course meal was paired with wine, courtesy of VDP Distributors. Jan Nico Coetzee from VDP introduced each wine before starters, main meal and dessert were served. Rob Thunder of Car-Go conducted an auction, followed by the sale of “surprise envelopes”. A raffle to win two pairs of sunglasses from Sun-

RIGHT: Tracy Weston, Jan Nico Coetzee, Yolande and Ruben van Wambeke. stoppers and a lucky draw for a Buco wheelbarrow filled with treats also formed part of the function’s highlights. Black Coffee was responsible for the sound and lighting while ECR’s Cameron Claassens had the guests dancing. The promotional girls from Leventus did a superb job of hosting the evening. The aim of the charity event, organised by the Guild of St Mary’s Old Girls, was to raise money for the St Mary’s Foundation Trust, which provides bursaries to the school, as well as a chosen non-profit organisation. This year the Childhood Cancer Foundation SA (Choc) was the bene-

fitting charity. Choc will use the funds to provide holistic support for children suffering from cancer and life-threatening blood disorders, and provide support for their families. The event would not have been possible without the support of the main sponsors Setzkorn Health and Wealth Consulting and Discovery, and associate sponsors The Sumner Group, Nu Hair, Buco and Pewter Studio. The Guild of St Mary’s Old Girls thank the auction and surprise envelope contributors as well as the guests for enabling them to raise over R100 000 for two very worthy beneficiaries.

“There is a big difference between the idea of cross-cultural adoption, and actually taking a little boy or girl into your home. We didn’t adopt an idea, we adopted Jenna! And from the first moment she has been the love of our lives, exactly the same as a proud mom and dad would reach out for their biological baby at the hospital. The only difference is that she wasn’t born from our womb, but from our hearts.”

Big series for paddlers

>> Bay Union Surfski Series kick-starts the winter ocean-paddling season this month FEVER REPORTER

The addition of the King of the Bay event is just one of the many changes the series will enjoy in its second edition, while the core of what proved to be so successful in 2013 remains. “It is hard to find anywhere else in the world that comes close to paddling on Durban’s warm Indian Ocean in winter!” enthused series coordinator Barry Lewin. “This natural gem and the great support we received from the paddlers at last year’s series really has us excited about the upcoming 2014 Bay Union Surfski Series.” “We are really pleased to welcome the King of the Bay race to our series this year. “The event is an iconic one on KZN’s surfski calendar and with the

PPER Highway paddlers are eagerly readying themselves for the start of another busy winter season of ocean paddling with the four-race 2014 Bay Union Surfski Series kick-starting the world-renowned season in May. After its successful inaugural edition last year, the popular series of Durban-based clashes gets underway with the Bay Union Season Starter at Marine Surf Lifesaving Club (SLC). The following three Sundays see the staging of the Lion of Africa Surfski Challenge, McCarthy Toyota King of the Bay and the Bay Union Reef Challenge presented by Point Watersports Club (PWC).

race traditionally finishing at Marine (SLC) each year, there is such a great fit between the race and the series already. “We also have our other three fantastic events that were so well received last year back again this year plus we’re really looking forward to the return of the Bay Union Shootout, a knockout surfski sprint competition which takes place immediately after race four at PWC on Sunday 25 May,” he added. With the popular 6 and 12km course options available for paddlers to choose from in races one, two and four, doubles or singles categories the Series looks set to provide a memorable four weeks.
