Eagle kills and preys on pets >> Resident’s Fox Terrier was killed last week KALISHA NAICKER

HILLCREST woman says she is being “terrorised” by a Crowned Eagle that has allegedly killed two of her pets and injured one in less than six months. Vivien Sneddon said her Fox Terrier x - Buttercup - was killed

last week. Her Maltese poodle Belle - was badly injured over the Easter weekend and her Persian kitten Misty was killed and only tufts of her fur was left on her lawn last year. Sneddon is frantically trying to find other “victims” whose animals may have been killed by the eagle. “The bird can only be relocated

if there are enough people affected by its behaviour.” She calls on those who have had similar incidents to report their incidents to local authorities so action can be taken. The eagle believed to be responsible for the killing of pets. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Supporting beggars is illegal KALISHA NAICKER

OMMUNITY members and traders in Hillcrest are calling for action against beggars who are harassing people for money. Businesses along the Old Main Road and motorists who use the road say they are fed up with vagrants making a nuisance of themselves in this area. Community activists are now working with the SAPS in a bid to tackle the issue which mainly affects the section of the road closest to the shopping mall. Marge Mitchell of Keep Hillcrest Beautiful said: “The area is rife with them. “You cannot walk or drive through Old Main Road without being asked by someone for money. “One person had virtually ‘set up camp’ near the entrance of an eatery as he is there every day. He plays on

people’s emotions as they walk out with their take-away, and he stands with an outstretched hand asking for food or money. “Perhaps they think this is a good area to beg in because there are lots of businesses, so plenty of people are coming and going, but it is causing a nuisance.” One business owner, who did not want to be named said: “We have had a couple of beggars who have been stopping people as they walk past. “It is a nuisance, especially for elderly people who find it intimidating,” he said. Steven King, public relations officer of the Hillcrest CPF, said the community were now working with the police to tackle the problem. “The community is working with the police to prevent this happening. “Unfortunately, in Hillcrest there are people who are desperate for a meal and will rather beg than go to a

charity for help. However, it seems that many who beg also use the money to purchase alcohol. “I urge people to rather support some of the many homeless charities in the area and stop supporting beggars on the street,” King said. Mitchell, in an effort to stop begging in the area created the Phuma Okhoneni Garden Project.

She said that the committee consists of members of SAPS, CPF, Metro police, municipal department: Safer Cities; councillors, a headmaster, a pastor and concerned citizens. Mitchell said that begging illegal and research done by the committee discovered that beggars are supporting their drug addiction with the money they receive. She said that beggars change from their smart clothes into their begging rags to work the intersections, and do “shifts”. “Beggars refuse offered employment because they get more money

from begging. “Beggars can and do resort to crime and are informants. “Beggars also live together in a house and are managed by a master,” she said. She said by giving beggars money, food or clothing the community is growing the begging problem and not solving it. “We appeal to you to rather donate to non-profit organisations which aims to rehabilitate the beggars,” added Mitchell. FTER working since the age of 17, often seven days a week and frequently going from night shift into day shift to make ends meet, William Shozi, shift supervisor at Compass Waste Services, says this will be his last job. The 47-year-old father of three

boys says that when he leaves Compass it will be to retire. Shozi says he could not have asked for a better job and it gives him comforttoknowhewillbepartoftheCompass family until retirement. He was born and raised in Mariannhill, but due to the unrest in the eighties, his mother sent him to live with his uncle in Camperdown

where he completed Standard 6 to Standard 9. Six years in the army in the Free State followed during which time Shozi learnt the importance of hard work and working as a team. “It was very tough and we trained hard, but I learnt so much. “We were instructed in English and Afrikaans and today I still under-

stand when someone speaks in Afrikaans.” After leaving the army Shozi worked for Futura Footwear in their factory in Pinetown. “I was responsible for mixing the chemicals for the rubber used for shoe soles, and I enjoyed my job,” he says. Unfortunately, the company closed and Shozi found himself unemployed. “I applied for a job with the South African Police Force, but they only had temporary jobs available so I became a reservist.” Having just got married, Shozi knew he needed a stable income and decided to become a night security guard above his police duties. He often worked seven days a week, sometimes 22 hours a day, only sleepingduringhislunchhourandfor an hour after his day job and before his night shift. “If I needed a break, I would ask a fellow security guard to take over frommeforanightorfortheweekend shifts, but I needed the money so I worked very long hours,” he said. It was during this time that Shozi first met Ian du Randt, founder and managing director of Compass Waste Services. “I was the night security guard for an area in Pinetown at Old Main Road where Ian had one shipping container to store clean stock. It was in 1998 and this is how Compass started,” he

explains.“Ianaskedmetokeepaneye on the container and, every evening afterwork, hewouldcometocheckon the container and we would chat. He told me that one day he would have a big business and that I would work for him.” In 2001 Shozi started at Compass asanon-sitemedicalwastecontroller at RK Khan Hospital in Chatsworth and then Wentworth Hospital before moving to the treatment plant in Westmead, which opened in the middle of 2002. Between 2003 and 2004 he spent some time in stores at the Westmead office monitoring orders and controlling stock and then returned to treatment. As a result, he has a very comprehensive understanding of what is involved in medical waste removal and treatment and the non-negotiable standards to which Compass adheres. When asked about his management style he believes that good communication is key. “We are all part of a team and if one of the links in the chain is weak, our team is weak,” explains Shozi. “Being in a highly regulated industry, rules and regulations are vital so I make sure my guys know exactly what is expected of them. If there is a problem we talk about it straight away so we can get back to being a strong team. “I would like to thank Compass for having faith in me and allowing me to be able to give my three boys - Mike, Phumulani and Cyril - a better and easier life,” says Shozi.

Murderers, most frighteningly, can take lives of innocent people because they fear no consequences. Regardless of the available footage of wanton looting of foreign-owned shops over months, the minister has sat on his behind and done nothing whatsoever to display any reach of the law. To him it has never been a priority. What a scandal! Zuma, clearly, is tired and out of his depth. Moreover, he has no passion for rule of law and constitutionality. Under him, law and order have broken down. If the government cannot act with energy and swiftness, it should resign. The lacklustre performanceofthismassiveandcostlygovernment, one of the largest in the world, has created a great international liability for South Africa and has deeply ashamed all of us. If we do not rein in the forces of anarchy and evil now and if consequences don’t follow for what happened, before witnesses, the good story of Zuma will become a living nightmare for all of us. Zwelithini’s concert KING Goodwill Zwelithini’s imbizo was more of a self-aggrandisement stunt and a concert than about promoting peace, co-existence and doing damage control. After a lengthy silence and strong criticism during and after the xenophobic attacks, the imbizo was held to clarify his stance on the violent attacks. The notions that foreigners are “stealing” jobs and that they don’t have a right to be here need to be rectified immediately. Zwelithini blamed the media for misquoting him. If that was the case, why didn’t he immediately release a press statement correcting it? It does not require an intellectual critique of

I HAVE written about this before but it’s not been printed, but since it is now being said by Izak Pietersen, CEO of the JSE-listed Dipula Income Fund, I quote from news24.com what the latter is reported to have said. “It is not sustainable to expect commercial and certainresidentialpropertyownerstosubsidiseadysfunctional municipal system. Something has to give. Many property owners are forced to pay for privatesector suppliers to deliver the same services they had already paid municipalities for but did not receive.” And isn’t it true that private security companies are regarded as our private police force? Who would you call first? That is the big issue — paying but not receiving. How would the law books describe this paying but not receiving? A Mr Yelland said recently that while we cut down on electricity usage, it is helpful for load shedding in the short-term, but in the long-term it is affecting Eskom’s finances, which are the lowest in seven years. Moreover, the booing and jeering at non-Zulu priests, such as Ashwin Trikamjee, during the imbizo raises serious concerns for conscience-driven individuals. There is an urgent need for all key role players to engage in constructive dialogue to understand the grievances of people and communities that might tempt some to commit hate crimes like xenophobia and other discriminatory violence in South Africa. Maintenance an unfair issue I THINK it’s unfair that some men get away with not paying maintenance. They expect the woman to bear the burden of the cost of raising the child because the child doesn’t live with the dad. From doctors bills when the child is sick to clothing of a growing child, is not a concern of some fathers. Women must struggle to feed, clothe, take care of the child and pay rent. The father doesn’t think all this costs moneyorhowdifficultitistobeasinglemomwith the high cost of living. They don’t do all they can to support the child yettheyareequallyresponsibleforbringingachild into this world. Women are superheroes because they carry the miracle of life from the womb to the earth. They are still expected to raise angels, fill stomachs and hearts for many years. They are strong handmaidens, chosen for the important task of being a mother, holding their children in their bosom, planting seeds of wisdom and covering these cherubs to bed with a kiss goodnight. NEAT Freak is proud to launch the third annual Shirt off your Back (SOYB) initiative which will run during May. Started by Neat Freak’s CEO, Isabelle de Grandpre, in memory of her late father Pierre Robert, the SOYB initiative will collect pre-loved clothing for distribution to the Highway Hospice and The Open Door Crisis Centre, in KZN. As Neat Freak encourages its clients to de-clutter their lives and belongings, the initiative is a way for peopletodothisandhelpothersatthe same time. “We’re hoping that this initiative will highlight that many of us have so much and that de-cluttering and donating your pre-loved clothing will help clothe someone else less fortunate,” says Grandpre. The SOYB campaign strives to highlight the worthwhile work that each charity does. The Open Door Crisis Centre is a holistic, multifaceted one-stop crisis and trauma centre offering counselling, social services and support groups to people in KZN. Highway Hospice evolves from the vision that every person with a terminal illness deserves quality, meaningful life during the time left to him or her.

In the build up to Easter, a series of clues were released on the Hillcrest Corner Facebook page and after a week of deciphering the hints, riddles and puzzles, parents were jockeying for position as they readied themselves to race to the final secret location which was revealed in the cryptic clues. Hillcrest Corner went above and beyond to foster the spirit of Easter. As an integral part of the community, the centre took great pleasure in bringing residents together to share in the joy of this cherished holiday. However, it wasn’t all about the glitz and glamour of the treasure hunt. In true Easter spirit, Hillcrest Corner also donated Easter eggs to the Focus on Ithemba charity in Waterfall.

Perfect lingerie experience Charlotte Gumede with Faye and Gina from Satin Candy Kloof. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

FEVER REPORTER SATIN Candy, a lingerie boutique that has branches in Kloof and Durban North, offers an opportunity of shopping in an intimate setting with individual service and an experience of tranquillity. With an array of alluring and attractive lingerie Satin Candy makes women feel their best, as not only does it have stunning panties,

two-pieces, corsets, for example, its bra offerings range from a cup A to a cup N. Charlotte Gumede, a horse groomer at a Waterfall stable, recently visited Satin Candy in Kloof and had her first bra fitting. Gumede found the experience exciting and helpful, and with the assistance of friendly sales ladies Gina and Faye, she found the perfect bra which helped with her posture, backache and confidence. Before Gumede walked into Satin Candy she doubted finding a bra that would support and fit her 100%. However, from the moment she was assisted by staff and shown numerous lingerie options she knew she wouldn’t walk out empty handed. After Faye had measured Gumede she was told she was not a 40 C cup, which she thought she was, but was a 38 KK and was told she had been wearing the incorrect bra size for a long time. Gumede was delighted with the Satin Candy experience. “No more saggy boobs and backache for me,” she said. Satin Candy sponsored her a number of bras as part of its social responsibility drive and is always on the look-out of assisting women in need. Get your distinctive measurements and lingerie fitting either at Satin Candy at 72 Old Main Road, Kloof, phone 031 764 5541, or 41 Adelaine Tambo Drive, Durban North, phone 031 564 4042 or go to www.satincandy.co.za or www.facebook.com/satincandy

SANDF camps in Pinetown >> Part of the army’s intervention into the region’s xenophobic violence

T

HE South African National Defence Force it setting up camp in Pinetown as part of the army’s intervention into the region’s xenophobic violence. On Friday tents, including a Mess tent, were being erected at the Mvoti Mounted Rifles site, also known as Highway Command, in Ashley. In a statement sent to National Parliament, President Jacob Zuma said 338 soldiers have been deployed countrywide at a cost of R4,2 million. On Tuesday, Minister of Defence Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula announced the army would be deployed in townships such as Alexandra, Johannesburg, in the wake of xenophobic violence in KZN and Gauteng. On Tuesday the army joined the police on a raid in Jeppestown, Johannesburg and on Wednesday soldiers again supported police officers on a hostel raid in Alexandra. Parked in front of the Pinetown base were eight armoured personnel carriers, known as Mambas while several soldiers could be seen walking around. phobic violence that has rocked KZN for more than a month said that the Mtubatuba-based 121 Battalion would likely be deployed to the Durban base. But the SANDF spokesperson Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga said he could not disclose when, how many and where the army will be

sending troops. “I am not aware of any deployment of 121 Battalion but I do know elements of the SANDF have been assigned to support the SAPS countrywide,” said Mabanga He said the deployments were “pre-planned activities” with the aim of supporting the police.

‘Heavyweights in KZN’ THE battle is on for the political heart and soulofPresidentJacobZuma’shomeprovincewiththecountry’sthreelargestparties sending in the big guns this weekend. The DA is holding its KwaZulu-Natal provincial congress in Richards Bay where MmusiMaimaneandJamesWilmotareexpected to address delegates. Maimanehasannouncedhiscandidacy to lead the party following Helen Zille’s announcement earlier this month that she was stepping down as party leader. James Wilmot confirmed he will challenge Maimane for the top post on Friday. Wilmot said he is like a David against a Goliath, but he warned Maimane David was steady on his feet while Goliath was

weighed down by his armour. After putting over the EFF view to students at DUT yesterday, party leader Julius Malema will next address a rally in kwaMashu tomorrow. Hiscommentscanexpecttodrawsome fire. In the wake of Malema’s visit and the DA provincial congress, the ANC issued a statement headlined “ANC deploys heavyweights in KwaZulu-Natal this weekend”. The statement issued by the ANC’s provincial media officer Sicelo Khuzway said thedeploymentwasinlinewiththeparty’s “mandate of being with the people at all times”. But at the same time, the statement

warned that: “Opposition parties are already feeling the winds blowing with a tsunami from afar and are probably looking for tiny spaces to hibernate”. Former national Police minister Bheki Cele and provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala were yesterday scheduled to lead a march against xenophobia in Ladysmith’s Ezakheni township, while the national Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete would address a “cadre’s forum” in Greytown at the weekend. Tomorrow she is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at a rally in Groutville on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast.

“I cannot disclose the size of the force to be deployed.” But a source with knowledge of the Mvoti base said the Mambas stationed at the site were “not regularly there”. “It is likely 121 Battalion will be deployed as they are a regular force,” said the source. Another source with

knowledge of the national intelligence agency maintained that 121 Battalion had been placed on standby throughout the xenophobic unrest and would likely be deployed to Durban. In the last two days, peace marches against xenophobia were held in variouspartsofthecountrywhileearlier this week King Goodwill ZwelithinicalledontheZulunationatanimbizo held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium to defend foreigners. No xenophobic attacks have been reported throughout this week. The police have maintained a presenceinDurban’sCBDandPietermaritzburg. Fever’s sister publication The Witness has also confirmed that several foreign-owned businesses driven out of townships such as kwaMashu and Inanda have begun to return. Conserving Drummond’s ‘green lung’ KALISHA NAICKER THE DRUMMOND Conservancy near Hillcrest is fortunate to have frequent sightings of duiker and porcupines and rare sightings of bushbuck, genets, whitetailed mongooses and caracals. There is a healthy bat, frog and snake population showing an amazingly wellbalanced ecology. The bird life includes Crowned Eagles and the sound of the African Fish Eagle is an unmistakable sound of the area. Drummond began as a commercial forestry when Durban was a distant city near the harbour, which left the area with the threat of alien vegetation. With the urban sprawl around Drummond and the Cato Ridge area threatening to become a logistics hub, the job of the Drummond Conservancy is to conserve the “green lung” and help establish the area as a safe haven for existing and future flora and fauna. The conservancy started a monthly newsletter for residents via the email database educating them about alien plants and their eradication Speaking to the Fever Sue James, the Drummond Conservancy chairperson, said they have had a good year, especially with regard to road verges and stream clearing. “We established a few indigenous gardens along the spine road, Thousand Hills Drive. These have required a lot of timeconsuming weeding and we have consolidated somewhat. For the most part our road verges have re-established to grasslands and our naturally occurring Aloe Ferox, Erythrinas and Acacia Siberiana (pa-

perbark) trees,” she said. “Our work along the Sterkspruit River, which runs along the N3 highway past Drummond was extended to the other side oftheriver.IworkedbackthatthisN3highway was constructed in the early sixties and this alien bush (mostly Syringa trees) are about 55 years old. “I am indebted to Craig James and his merry gang of 10 who cut down these huge trees and did the initial clearing. Where indigenous trees were growing too close to the Syringas we sprayed with a diesel and Garlon solution. “These poisoned Syringas have mostly died and now provide spotting and roosting perches for the many raptors found in the area. Along the stream bed there is a bad infestation of Wild Ginger and Bracken fern, which will have to be tackled in the drier winter months. “We have further cleared the stream that runs alongside Thousand Hills

Drive. This was no mean undertaking given that it is steep and has old aliens. This area is actually private land and belongs to the properties above the road. “The owners have no interest in it as it is largely unusable land and the aliens were left to flourish. There is one area of large gum trees left, which we are hoping Guy de Charmoy will cut down and remove. The problem is that it is too steep for his Bell Loader to traverse and we have to find another route into the area.” SA Natural Products have kindly repeated its donation to Drummond Conservancy this year. Drummond Conservancy held its sixth annual Walk on the Wildside in October. As usual this was very successful, although I think that the inclement weather kept some people away. A festive farm fair’ was held earlier in the year, which also hosted a number of live bands and it became something of a mini Splashy.

Change a Life quartet eye strong challenge >> Nedbank sani2c trail event gets under way from 12 May

M

ARTIN Dreyer’s RMB Change a Life MTB Academy has grown from strength to strength in recent years and this year may see it produce its best set of Nedbank sani2c results as its four pairings look to take on some of the best pro riders in the country from 14 to 16 May. While still relative newcomers to the sport, Dreyer’s outfit continues to set the KwaZulu-Natal mountain biking scene alight with regular top performances, and another strong showing at this year’s Sani Pass to Scottburgh Main Beach three-day dash has many close to the Valley of a Thousand Hills setup excited. “The fact that four of the top pro teams are to miss this year’s sani2c due to their participation in the UCI MTB World Cups in Europe opens things up quite a bit,” says Dreyer.

“I don’t think the level will be quite as diminished as maybe some are expecting though. “It may be a little easier to get into the top10withsomeoftheguysbeingaway, but there are still plenty of talented pro teams around that the battle for podium positions will be very competitive. “My guys will however, be extra excited at the chance of possibly finding themselves in the mix a bit more, and while an overall podium will be extremely difficult, maybe we’ll look to target a stage podium at some stage,” he says. Change a Life’s top challenge is most likely to come from stand-out performers Sthembiso Masango and Mboneni Ngcobo while Ndumiso “Maza” Dontso and Sipho Kupiso will hope to continue on their recent trend of growth at the event.

The 11th edition of the Nedbank sani2c gets under way when the trail event takes place from 12 to 14 May. The adventure then unfolds from 13 to 15 May before the cream of the country's top mountain bikers do battle during the race from 14 to 16 May. - Supplied.
