ILLCREST’s new station commander isn’t your average police officer. He has competed five Comrades Marathons and is training for his sixth one this year. Colonel DB Ndlovu is a family man who treasures spending time with his wife and three children. He looks up to his 91-year old dad as a role model, and says if it were not for the sacrifices his dad made, he would not be the success he is today. But there is a serious side to this man whose new mission is to fight crime in the Hillcrest area. Ndlovu has been in the SAPS for almost 30 years and has more than 14 years’ experience as a station commander. Ndlovu matriculated in Mpuma-

ESIDENTS of Embo in Hillcrest and the Hillcrest Conservancy joined forces to clear the dense bushinanefforttoreducecrimeinthe area. According to Alphonce Baswell who spearheaded the operation, Mkhize Road is notorious for being a ‘high- crime’ area. He said many invasive-type plants cause problems along the rail reserve as the dense bush provides an ideal hiding spot for vagrants. “Volunteers cut down some of the tallgrowthandcleaneduparoundthe path which is used extensively by residents of Embo. We also involved a numberofschoolchildrenintheclean up and created a community spirit among this small group,” he said.

George Victor of the Hillcrest Conservancy said that when Hillcrest Conservancy members heard about this effort, they got on board and assisted by clearing a larger area and painting the safety barriers at the end of the road. “Numerous bags of litter were removed from the area as well as the adjacent railway tracks with this effort being long overdue,” said Victor. “This area has much historic value as these railway cuttings were the only route that could be taken between Hillcrest and Botha’s Hill at the time with the entire project being considered a major engineering feat in its day. The adjacent grasslands are unique and the Embo Conservancy has plans to protect these and establish scenic trails along the ridges.” He said the Embo Conservancy plans to encourage the removal of in-

kalisha.naicker@media24.com EARLY last month Lesley Cuthbert, an Ashley Junior Primary School teacher, contacted the Kloof and Highway SPCA informing the society that Grade R to Grade 3 pupils wanted to give back to the community

by assisting in raising funds for the SPCA. Each pupil was given a Kloof and Highway SPCA - branded bag and asked to get permission from their parents to fill the bags with items that could be resold in their charity shops. Two weeks later, on 5 March, the Kloof and Highway SPCA education

ITH more than 10 000 bonsais in her garden and a few hundred more at her nursery, Hillcrest mum Lynne Theodorou is becoming known as the “bonsai queen”. Theodorou will offer her expertise and tips to bonsai enthusiasts at the Kengai Bonsai Kai show at Hillcrest Primary on 28 and 29 March and the community is urged to attend. As a child Theodorou loved oriental art with its bonsai representations. "I always had a fascination with Japanese art such as yoga, Zen, Buddhism and Japanese flower arranging. "After I got married my husband bought me a book on bonsais and that is how the love for this beautiful species began." She has been sculpting miniature trees for almost 40 years and has travelled to Japan and around South Africa gaining experience on the art form. Theodorou has been accepted into many bonsai organisations. "During my early days I joined the EasternBonsaiclub.ThenIjoinedthe Durban Bonsai Club and became its chairperson. I am currently involved the KwaZulu-Natal Bonsai Association, the African Bonsai Association and the South African Bonsai Association. "I have a passion for educating the public on this beautiful art form. Growing bonsais gives me peace and tranquility. It is a wonderful hobby which has developed into an amazing career." Theodorou is self-taught. "I didn't study. I was always around it, just doing it," she said. "I planted every seed and every cutting I could get. I love growing. "A lot of my passion for plants can be attributed to my parents because

I helped them prune trees and rose bushes we had at home." “Bonsai isn't all technique. It involves artistic talent as well as instinct. The hardest part is knowing your tree, knowing what it wants and understanding it," said Theodorou. The mother-of-two said she has the best job in the world. "Bonsai means me 'living' with the creator daily as nature is ultimately God," she says.

Her tip to other bonsai growers: "Always water your trees." To find out more on bonsais attend the Kengai Bonsai Kai show at Hillcrest Primary. Tickets are R20 per person. There will be trees on show, talks, tree clinics, demonstrations by experts, equipment and tree sales. The community can also bring in a tree for styling. WHEN Hillcrest mother Lea Kassner was invited to the Durban July last year, little did she know that the glamorous event would change her life forever. She now hires out ball gowns, suits, party dresses and more, so anyone can become royalty for a day, whenever they please. “A friend, who is married to a jockey, invited me to the July last year. “Ihadneverbeenbeforesoitwas an exciting experience, but my heart sank when I was told that it was a dress-up affair,’’ said Kassner. “Needless to say, I did not own any formal dresses other than the one I had worn, back in the day, when I was a size eight. I did not want to buy a dress as I knew it was a once-off occasion and probably would not wear it again. “So on my mission to find a dress, I realised just how difficult it was to find something locally, which made me think that I could not be the only person with this problem.’’ The mother-of-three soon got her creative juices flowing and the “Occasions Dress and Suit Hire” was born. This business allows men, women and students who otherwise cannot afford glamorous out-

fits, to hire one for the day at a fraction of the cost of buying one. Kassner researches all of her outfits and relies on her daughters, their friends and mothers to let her know what the latest trends are. She says many girls are invited to four matric dances and it is impossible to afford a new dress for each occasion so hiring is a real option. This business allows her to work after hours and free herself up for school activities which her children participate in. “My afternoons are spent running them between extramural activities so I make my appointments in the morning, evenings and on the weekend,’’ explains Kassner. Being a people person it allows Kassner to meet new people from the area which has become home to her. “It gives me gives me such a thrill when a client walks out happy with the dress or suit they love. “I love receiving the pre-dance photos of them dressed up and looking gorgeous.’’ Kassner is hiring and selling dance dresses and hiring out suits. She imports most of her dresses, but can also take dresses on consignment, which she will sell on for you. For more information, contact Kassner on 082 810 5929.

Future of home for aged T uncertain

HE Issy Geshen Home for the Aged provides invaluable care to 68 frail, elderly residents from Mariannhill, Waterfall, Botha’s Hill and Lamontville. It was established in 1960 by local businessman Issy Geshen who realised there was a need to establish a facility for destitute elderly black pensioners. It was the first home for black elders in KwaZulu-Natal and was registered as an old-age facility in 1980. It then qualified for a government subsidy. The principle objective of the home, 55 years later, remains to providecareandtopromotethe physical, emotional and social well-being of its clients. frail-care ward, offices, a laundry and a small tuck shop. In 2001 the home acquired a small house adjacent to the main building which was renovated to provide specialised care for nine clients who suffered with dementia. There is a large flat garden area that is used for recreation and special events and a tieredvegetableandfruit-treegarden at the back of the home. The staff complement of 36 is headed by the administrator. The team includes professional nurses, a social worker, a part-time occupational therapist, carers, general assistants and others. There is a strong volunteer team, sourced from the local community, who assist in many departments. Residents enjoy three meals a day as well as tea. They may purchase additional treats, and personal care items, from the tuck shop. Residents participateinexerciseandgamesand are involved handwork projects. Residents with special needs are referred to local hospitals for medical care, speech therapy, physiotherapy and to the remedial gymnasium. Spectacles, wheelchairsandwalkers are also provided by the home,

which is funded by 80% of the residents’ state pension plus a government subsidy. The total of the residents’ contribution and the government subsidy pays for about 63% of the home’s total expenses. The home has to find the remaining 37% through donations from the private sector. Currently, the Issy Geshen Home has an operating shortfall of R2 158 per resident a month. This equates to R1 760 000 per annum. Historically the home has provided for all the needs of the residents. Many of their families are poor and themselves in receipt of grants so to contribute financially to their elders’ care will, for some, be very difficult. The home is currently engaged in a communication process with family members. Families will initially be asked to contribute R500 per month towards their elder’s monthly shortfall. This contribution will be increased later in the year. But the future remains uncertain and the home is appealing for help. Are monkeys really the victims? I AM sick and tired of hearing

about the “poor” monkeys, and clearly I am not the only one, judging by the escalation of attacks on them. Far from being the starving, misunderstood darlings, we keep hearing how they are healthy, bright-eyed, reproducing at an alarming rate and are becoming a real problem. The other myth is that we have taken over their habitat, and “sob, sob”, we need to be understanding “because they have been so robbed”. Most residential developments have taken place on what was once veld and farmland. Preservation of riverine forest and the run-off catchment areas

How far can peer pressure go? YOUNG boys in this day and age bully their peers into consuming alcohol, which is wrong. Parents themselves need to be wary of the consequences of allowing your teenagers to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes as this might have a negative impact on your child’s life. Most parents want their children to be good, decent human beings. On Friday we witnessed a young boy collapse right in front of us. His peers poured 20 litres of water all over him in an effort to bring him back to consciousness. Afterwards they put him in a parked car and left him there for about 30 to 50 minutes. One of the boy’s friends said: “Let him sleep he will be okay, that is what happens when you drink for the first time.” The next day we found out that the boy who had collapsed was in hospital becausehe is diabetic and alcohol is not good for him. We pray that God will be there for the boy and his family during such a difficult time and we urge children to wait until they are the appropriate age to start drinking alcohol. Concerned parent

is incredibly strict, with D’Moss the Durban Metropolitan open space system - covering huge tracts of land, all of it linked together in an incredible way. Monkeys don’t live in the veld, they are tree dwellers - and far from destroying their habitat residential properties have increased it by planting numerous trees. I can already hear the howls about much of that not being indigenous, but many exotic trees have fruits and berries much loved by birds and monkeys alike. In the lowveld, resorts all have notices up reading “a fed monkey is a dead monkey”. The reason is obvious – monkeys are quick to learn new

tricks, and are highly opportunistic creatures. Sadly, in our area they have come to equate human habitation with easy food, because people feed them. True conservationists do not intervene with nature in this way. So, we have reached the stage where numbers need to be controlled. Why the horror at such an idea when beautiful, gentle buck of all shapes and sizes are culled in their thousands every year. If nothing is done to reduce the numbers, we will see more home owners taking things into their own hands, although not the best solution, I am sure everyone would agree. People lover

Its constantly variable transmission has been revised to, the automaker claims,

TheRTMCsaysfreightandpublictransport operators (owners) will be held liable for the failure of their drivers to renew their professional driving permits. Information from the corporation indicates that 433 973 expired professional driving permits existed on the National Traffic Information System on December 31, 2014. This is 43.35% of all PrDPs issued. The provinces with the most expired permits are Gauteng (50%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal and Northern Cape with 44% and 43%, respectively. To improve compliance and improve safety on the roads the RTMC and other traffic enforcement agencies have stepped up vigilance and will investigate all major crashes to establish the compliance level of operators. This collaboration will be rolled out throughout the year and unannounced inspections will be undertaken on operators’ premises to establish compliance levels. Habitual overloading offenders will be identified and stringent measures taken against those found to be unwilling to comply with the law. Operators are being warned to adhere to road traffic regulations and obey the rules of the road. Msibi said: “The national traffic police together with other law enforcement agencies will be increasing their vigilance on the roads throughout the year and offenders will be prosecuted.” - Wheels24.

‘Zero % won’t save lives’ THE proposed changes to the legal blood-alcohol limit will do nothing to reduce the appalling death toll on our roads, so says forensic expert Dr Gavin Kirk. While drunk drivers are undoubtedly an important factor in causing deaths on our roads, this is not the way to improve the situation. That is because it is not based on any evidence and appears to be an attempt to “do something” about the situation even if it makes no sense. In a national survey of transport fatalities conducted at South African medico-legal mortuaries in 2004 it was found that 50% of drivers who died in road traffic collisions tested positive for alcohol – a strong indication of the link of alcohol to fatal collisions. However, the mean blood alcohol concentration in these drivers was 0.17g/100ml, which is more than three times the current legal limit. While this study is more than 10 years old, there is no reason to suspect that the situation is any different today. There are other problems that ariseoutoftheproposedchanges. A number of high profile cases havealreadyshownhowvulnerable laboratory results can be to challenge in court. This will become ever more so if drivers whose blood alcohol concentrations are close to zero are prosecuted. Those proposing the changes are obviously unaware of the fact thatweallproducesmallamounts of endogenous alcohol naturally within our bodies and that any laboratory analysis must provide for a reasonable margin of error. The proposed law would be fertile ground for defence attorneys. Rather than changing the law in a way that will do nothing to reduce fatal collisions, what needs to be done is to properly enforce the current law. - Wheels24.

Kloof High retains title

>> Gelofte Night Series dominated by school FEVER REPORTER

K

LOOF High dominated the Gelofte Night Series last weekend, achieving podium positions in all sport codes. In the girls' hockey final Kloof High beat Port Natal 2-0, both goals being scored in the first half. Kloof were unbeaten throughout the tournament. This is the third year in a row that the rugby final has been between Kloof and Gelofte. Kloof won in 2013 and 2014 therefore defending the title again. The game started at a frantic pace withbothteamssizingoneanotherup on attack and defence. Early in the first half Kloof opened their account with the first point of the match – a try in the corner by flanker Kwanele Pewa. The conversion was unsuccessful, but Kloof had an early 5-0 lead. Gelofte came back strong and short and later got a try of their own. A typical Gelofte drive from a line-out saw them dot down in the corner. The fly half duly converted and

they took the lead 7-5. The rest of the half was a see-saw affair with neither team gaining any ascendancy with ball in hand and both defences remaining resolute. Neither team gave an inch. Gelofte went to half time with their two-point lead intact. The second half started much like the first half ended until Kloof worked a sublime passage of backline play from their own 22-metre line about 12 minutes into the half. It started when Gelofte kicked onto Kloof winger Ashley Garrity, who found himself isolated at the back. He managedtostephiswayoutoftrouble andheaddownthetouchlinetowards Gelofte's try line. The cross defence had him covered, but a few slick passes and a grubber kick saw centre Saneliso Ngubane (Man of the Match) gather and run in under the poles. The try was converted and Kloof took the lead 12-7. Gelofte threw everything at Kloof for the remainder of the half, but their defence stood firm with flanker MiguelFialho,fullbackJean-Pierrele

The winning rugby team.

Grangé, eighth man Travors Gumede and centre pairing of Donavan Raath and Saneliso Ngubane leading the defence effort, while our attack wings, Kevin Dawson and Ashley Garrity and fly half Phumlani Khumalo kept Gelofte guessing. The final whistle saw Kloof retain the series trophy again.
