U
PPER Highway residents are continuing to fight for the banning of trucks on the M13 (Fields Hill) and are posting banners on every bridge along the main road. While some might welcome the bold “ban trucks” signage after the most recent Fields Hill accident, eThekwini Municipality deems the act illegal, saying offenders could be fined. Speaking to the Hillcrest Fever, some residents in the area say although they do not know who has erected the banners, they support the initiative. “This is a wake-up call to the Department of Transport (DOT) that something needs to be done. “We are not sitting back and waiting for another tragedy to happen. We want action and we want it now,” said Ms B Chettiar, who travels along Fields Hill daily. “The municipality should not threaten the community (those who put up the signs) with fines; instead they should act on the truckers.” An “elated” resident, Michelle Naidu, who is also pleased with the banners, said, “Why can’t the municipality act on those who are causing havoc on Fields Hill? Instead they want to pick fights with a community.” In addition to residents’ comments, Kloof Community Policing Forum (CPF) project coordinator, Nikki Mohlmaan, said the signs were a “pleasant surprise”. “This is such a great way for a silent pro-

test. We need to get our politicians to sit up and take notice [instead of ] giving us empty promises,” she said. However, Marge Mitchell of the Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association (KHBA) said although the association sympathises with grieving families and wants the department to do something, the banners are illegal and have to be removed. “These banners are not only illegal, but are endangering lives of other motorists on the road. Any banner or waving signage on a road distracts drivers and could cause an accident,” she said. Mitchell said the KHBA has a contract with the municipality to remove all illegal banners from the Upper Highway area. “[Residents] need to realise that these banners are not going to assist in getting trucks off the M13. “All decisions are made by DOT. We all realise that something needs to be done, but we should not be breaking the law to be heard,” she added. eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Thabo Mofokeng said that signs are not permitted on any road in the city. Fines range from R900 upwards for each sign. He said that the M13 is already classified as a dangerous road and illegal signs are further causing distractions for motorists, which also endangers their lives. To report illegal signs in the Upper Highway area, contact 031 311 7744.

SPATE of house robberies and hijackings rocked the Upper Highway area earlier this year with criminals targeting homes and tying up residents before fleeing withcars, cellphones and other valuables. There has also been a spike in house break-ins where criminals have derailed driveway gates before forcing open doors, windows, security gates and burglar bars. This was revealed by the Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, at the SAPS Tshwane Training Academy in Pretoria West on Thursday as he unpacked the national crime statistics. According to the report, hijackings increased by 20 cases and house robberies by 14 cases in Hillcrest. In Inchanga, hijackings increased by three cases, house burglary increased by 10 and business robberies increased by 12 cases. In Pinetown (which includes the Kloof area) hijackings skyrocketed by 234 cases, house robberies by 155 and house burglary by 1375 cases. Mthethwa said that the province still has a lot of illegal firearms in circulation. He said that in order to reduce crime trends from escalating, there needs to be an enhancement of policing partnerships with the municipalities. However, Monica Bruun of Hillcrest CPF said that although incidents of hijackings, house robberies and house burglaries had increased at the beginning of the year, the situ-

ation did improve when a task team was appointed. “With strong police and community partnerships we can definitely reduce the statistics for 2014,” she said. Waterfall Crime Watch spokesperson and head of SA Crime, Steven King, also agreed that there has been an increase in the trio crimes (house and business robberies and hijackings) , but said this did stabilise with the appointment of the task team. “Our community is still living in fear and we need to rid our streets of these organised gangs,” he said. Kloof community policing forum project coordinator Nikki Mohlmann said the statistics are “extremely concerning” as there has been an increase in violent crime. “It’s a glaring fact that crime is out of control and this cannot be blamed on the officers of SAPS,” she said. “The Kloof station services more than 32 000 residents. “At most timesitonlyhasone vehicle available to respond to incidents; we as residents have to assist with repairs to vehicles. “SAPS have not allocated the adequate resources to the local stations
and until this is sorted out, crime will never be under control in the Upper Highway Area,” she said. Hillcrest resident Mrs D Peters said that the task teams deployed to the area earlier this year have done a “magnificent job” in keeping criminals at bay. She said although there is an increase in trio crimes, it is not as drastic as years before. “We need to work hand-in-hand to fight crime in our community,” she said. Durban-based Blue Security managing director, Darryn le Grange, urged residents to be extra vigilant during the holidays, when criminals tend to target empty houses. Le Grange said residents were at risk when arriving and leaving their properties. “When arriving home or at the office, be aware of your surroundings and if you notice suspicious individuals or vehicles near your gate, don’t risk an attack by opening the gate,” he said. “RatherdoaU-turnsothatthesuspects know you have seen them and then call your security company and ask for an escort,”he said.

‘Be yourself’ at garden show THE 38th Sunday Tribune Garden Show, the southern hemisphere’s oldest and largest horticultural event, will again take place at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg from 27 to 29 September. With in excess of 70 designer gardens, together with specialised exhibits of orchids, roses, floral decor, bonsai and others, it is a must see for anyone interested in gardening design as well as those who simply wish to be exposed to the splendour of the occasion. The 2013 theme is ‘Be Yourself’. This is to cater for the vast geographical spread of exhibitors from around the country where conditions range from arid to tropical. To complement the many displays ranging from the practical to the surreal; there is a strong focus on schools, where in excess of 50 mini gardens, designed and constructed by children, as young as nine years old, are on show. One of the many highlights is the Hall of Orchids and with an international array of exhibitors, this is a must-see for anyone interested in what is sometimes referred to as the “perfect blossom”. For the enthusiastic gardener who does not aspire to be a technical expert, the show caters for the
design and construction of 4sqm gardens for individuals or groups interested in displaying their talent in a relaxed but moderately competitive format. The 900sqm Happy Earth Hall forms an integral part of the show with the emphasis being on sustainability. This, together with the floral icing cake expo (the largest display of its kind in the country), ongoing cooking demonstrations by the 1000 Hills Chefs School and the presence of the Quilters Guild will again illicit significant interest. Aside from horticulture, the occasion includes the presence of a substantial outdoor expo focused on leisure activities with the bias towards tourism and recreation. 2013 will also see the introduction of a “Kidz Zone” where entertainment will be provided for younger children in a safe environment. Quite rightly referred to as South Africa’s Chelsea, it is little wonder that this unique event on the South African Show calendar draws an ever-increasing national and international audience. The Show is open from 9am to 5pm each day with gate charges being R50 per adult and R35 for children under 12 and pensioners.

HE South Africa Community Action Network (SA CAN), an organisation committed to working with local police in helping mobilise communities to fight crime, was founded by Highway resident Brian Jones a few years ago. Jones’ journey to fighting crime began around the age of 16 as he
grew up knowing the value of family support. He says his father’s courageous fight against muscular dystrophy left a particularly deep impression. Jones decided he could do more to help those in distress and started answering phones at Hillcrest SAPS. In due course he attended night Police College and volunteered around 150 hours a month with the SAPS Crime Prevention Unit.

Life’s a journey, enjoy the ride
On July 10 2002, Jones’ colleague Craig Ayliffe was shot dead a day before his 26th birthday while responding to an emergency. Ayliffeembodied a number of crucial qualities: he was a qualified medic, was a general manager in the security industry, and was also a qualified andpassionate SAPS reservist. Jones’ family wasdeeplyaffected by the incident, since Ayliffe had helped to care for Jones ailing father. Shortly after this inci-
dent SA CAN was born. In the following months Jones formed a friendship with Verdan Menne, the current CEO of SA CAN. Together, and with the help of countless others, Jones and Menne developed SA CAN based on the ideals and attributes of Craig Ayliffe and those like him. However, in July 2011 Jones decided to step down into the role of Community, Technology and Strategy Development, SA CAN executive board, in order to spend more time supporting communities at grassroots level. He is currently focusing on rural safety, spear-heading a pilot project in the KwaZulu-
Natal Midlands that aims to draw farmers, staff and other rural community members closer to each other and to their community safety and security resources, such as the SAPS and other emergency services. It is envisioned that the project will be completed and ready for duplication in April 2015. “Fromtheoutset,SACANhasbeen committedtohelpingtheSAPSmobilise community support in the fight against crime, and as a former police officer this is where my core passion lies,” explained Jones. “I love life deeply, which is why I have chosen to dedicate my life to solving and preventing the crimes that most put life at risk.” “I work with such incredible human beings. “I see miracles each day, mixed in with the sadness that goes with fighting crime, and that keeps me firing on all cylinders,” he said. Left and right PETER DAVIS COMING back from Maritzburg the other day I counted 386 lorries travelling inland on the N3. As there were times I could not see the opposite road, there must have been a few I did not count. Now I am not talking about bakkies or buses or taxis. I am talking about those huge behemoths with hundreds of tyres thumping the tar, overtaking on uphills and arrogantly growling down at the little old cars that the rest of us hurry around in. Then, of course, a percentage peels off onto the M13 in order to escape the weigh bridge at the toll plaza or to duck paying the tolls which creates havoc on Fields Hill and ends in tragedies such as the truck that ploughed into four taxis and killed 23 people on their way home. The massacre made world news and we locals were outraged that such a disaster wasallowedtohappen.Therewasanimmediate call to ban all “heavies” from the M13
neighbourhood watches and other organisations that have joined forces with one purpose - to ensure safety of residents. Next year this time, the statistics might look completely different and residents can take some of the credit for that. “Whatever the difficulties and
Enforce old laws before making new ones and a poignant gathering of sympathisers at the crash site. Transport MEC, Willies Mchunu, has ducked the issue, proclaiming it would be irresponsible for him to take such a momentous decision without consulting with all the stakeholders. There are some problems. While most of the lorries are heading in and out of Durban and the port, a fair number have Pinetown as their destination and they will have to glide off the toll road at Richmond Road which is already chaotic. Be that as it may, something has to be done. The government, in its usual “nanny” way, has proposed all sorts of laws knowing fullwellthattheycan’timposeexistinglaws let alone a bundle of new ones. One such proposal is to halve the blood/ alcohol content for drunken driving and to add two years for first timers to get their licences.Thesolutiondoesnotlieinnewlaws, but enforcing efficiently the old ones first. There is a dire shortage of trained, honest and effective traffic officers. At present therearenotrafficcopsonourroadsatnight so any dodgy lorries carrying contraband or
nasties that need special permits merely take to the roads at night, knowing they are safe from interference. Another idea is to build a dedicated freight road from the port to keep the heavies out of the city. With the port expansion and the proposed dig-out port at the old airportthatisgoingtobeanecessity, butsurely a better idea is to build a container port in say Cato Ridge where lorries can load and unload and connect it to the Durban Harbour by a dedicated and high speed train line. This would keep a great number of lorries out of the city environs and add greatly to the safety of the city’s citizens. Firsat prize, of course, would be a high speed line from Durban to Johannesburg, but with Transnet’s history I wouldn’t hold my breath. The road carnage causes untold misery among families and workplaces. The cost of these smashes is enormous and is slowly bleeding the country dry. A multi-disciplinary task force needs to be formed to come up with practical solutions that will reduce the death toll drastically.
Fields Hill crash: Waiting for results
I
T’S human nature to want to see gruesome things and while I agree with letter writer Claudia (No more videos - Hillcrest Fever opinion page - 20 September), you cannot stop people from circulating the footage/images or talking about it. Reality is, people did die, and this obviously has affected many lives; but all we
can hope for now is that these horrific deaths were not in vain. I really do hope the government is not just jumping around now and saying a lot of things to please us. I hope they are going to be putting effort into changing things. I would actually like to see some real results now and am not interested in reading

Community goes green >> Organisation says trees give the area “a green edge” FEVER REPORTER
T
HE Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association (KHBA) is celebrating Arbour Month by planting flowers and trees in various areas of the community. The project officially kicked off in Elizabeth Park on West Riding Road as members of the association gave six indigenous trees a new home. According to Dawn Brown, public relations officer of the association, the park, which is the only open space in Hillcrest where residents can freely walk dogs, was adopted by KHBA in 2008. “The beautiful park has the Nqutu stream running through it, and last year during Arbour Month, KHBA planted nine indigenous trees. She said that the association did not let this get them down, and they returned to the park this year to plant more trees. “KHBA got a generous donation of trees from Barry Lang of Parks and Gardens and we are using this to beautify our community,” she said. “The association has also received confirmation that resident Neil Northover, who lives in the vicinity, will be overseeing the park and will try to ensure that the trees are not tampered with.” Brown appealed to those who are in close proximity to the park as well as all those who exercise their dogs there, to keep a protective eye open for the trees. “We all need to keep an eye on our community and preserve the foliage,” she said.

Take a leaf from Nissan’s book Nissan and Eskom enter into electric vehicle research project
N
ISSAN has announced a unique three-year research project with electricity utility Eskom that will include testing the Nissan LEAF, Nissan’s flagship electric vehicle. The project is ahead of Nissan SA’s plans to formally launch the Nissan LEAF, becoming South Africa’s first commercial available fully electric vehicle (EV) - later this year. It follows a pilot programme to promote public awareness with the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), and another with the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) with a view to creating a commercially viable infrastructure for the use of electric vehicles. The announcement of the Nissan/Eskom collaboration was made by Nissan SA Sales, Marketing and Aftersales directorJohanKleynhansatavehiclehand-over ceremony of 10 Nissan LEAF cars. The fleet administration and maintenance of the Electric Vehicles will be managedbyAvisFleetServices(AFS),appointed by Nissan SA to manage the vehicles on Eskom’s behalf. “I’m delighted to be handing over 10 Nissan LEAFs for this research project,” said Kleynhans,“theoutcomeofwhichwill have long term implications for the development of the entire EV industry.”
for implementation within the energy body. He also thanked Avis Fleet Services for their role. Clive Else, Chief Executive of Avis Fleet Services, said his company was proud to be associated with the project. “The involvement of Avis Fleet Services, South Africa’s largest fleet management services company, early in the introduction cycle of this exciting vehicle, will help establish AFS as a local leader in the practical application of this technology for our customers,” said Else. Kleynhans acknowledged that a fullon launch of EVs, including the LEAF, in the South African market is subject to finalisation of government legislation, but he reiterated Nissan’s intent to launch the vehicle for sale before the year-end. “We are collaborating with all concerned in the e-mobility programme by providing our hands-on experience with EVs and the infrastructure required. The award-winning Nissan LEAF is the world’s first viable, mass market electric vehicle and has already been rolled out in Japan, the USA and Europe. With over 60 000 LEAFs sold globally to date, Kleynhans said that Nissan would be bringing its knowledge of best practices and benchmarking information to support the overall objectives of the programme.

usage patterns and charging characteristics of the cars themselves in order to design grid solutions and tariffs for e-mobility.” MacColl said that while South Africa uses fossil-based fuels for many of its energy processes, a new approach was in the
sights of all concerned. “E-mobility is a way of moving people around in a more effective and cleaner fashion which is critical for the economy,” he said. MacColl added that Eskom is intent upon finding technology options suitable

More space in the new Brio sedan >> New Honda offers so much more
S
ix months after the debut of Honda’s affordable and zesty Brio entrylevel hatchback, the range is being extended with the addition of an equally dynamic and contemporary sedan version. The four-door sedan retains the Brio’s trademark bright and bold design language, linked to zippy performance, exceptional efficiency and compelling value. However, it adds the practicality of more interior space and a large luggage compartment to the successful Brio formula. By extending the Brio wheelbase by 55 mm, Honda’s engineers have achieved an even roomier cabin with exceptional rear legroom, while the generous boot has a 405 litre capacity. That additional space and practicality will appeal to young families seeking a trendy and attractive car that is also affordable, economical and versatile, while benefiting from Honda’s exceptional track record as far as reliability and longevity are concerned. Although slightly larger and significantly more spacious than the Brio hatchback, the Brio Sedan’s kerb mass has increased by only 30 kg, which means that it retains Brio’s zippy, energetic character. The sedan retains the Brio hatchback’s modern and economical 1,2-litre i-VTEC
The Honda Brio powerplant. The compact four-cylinder engine produces a generous 65 kW of maximum power at 6 000 r/min, accompanied by a torque peak of 109 Nm at 4
500 r/min. But it is the interior that is set to be the Brio’s star attraction. The front layout is identical to that of the hatch, with an er-
gonomic approach that prioritises occupant comfort and driver appeal. The layout of the instrument dials and controls is intuitive, and generous equip-
ment levels, even on the entry-level trend model, ensure a high degree of comfort, while the even more luxurious Comfort model adds an extended features list. New, wide-opening rear doors ensure easy access to the roomy rear bench seat, which features exceptional leg and headroom. A rear centre armrest with integrated cup holders adds a touch of luxury. Bothactiveandpassivesafetyarecomprehensively addressed, with the likes of ABS brakes, dual front airbags and Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure ensuring excellent occupant safety. “The Brio hatchback really took the market by storm when we launched in early December last year,” says Graham Eagle, director of automobiles at Honda Motor Southern Africa. “It brought Honda’s famed quality and reliability within the reach of a broader audience, while introducing a vibrant energy and youthful appeal to the brand.” Eagle says that while the hatch is specifically targeted at young and trendy motorists,manyofthemfirst-timebuyers,the sedanextendsthenameplate’sreachtoinclude young, style-conscious families with an appetite for the four-door’s extra space and practicality.

Seedlings concert a magical success
Vrede en Lust The history of Vrede en Lust is a story of passion, vision and resurrection, which goes as far back as 1688, when Flemish merchant Jacques de Savoye arrived at the Cape with the French Huguenots. Since then, Vrede en Lust has changed hands a number of times and in 1996, when the Buys family became the 17th owners, they embarked on a programme of renewal to realise the exceptional winemaking potential of the land. Vrede en Lust is a family owned and managed wine business – a tribute to its noble roots and a magnificent addition to the South African wine industry. .

Decorating tips >> A slick of paint or a striking piece of art can work wonders in your home. So, if you’re thinking of making any changes, here’s what you need to consider:
D
ISCOVER YOUR personal style: Your home has to represent you and you have to feel comfortable in it. Unfortunately, the process of decorating can become overwhelming – more so if you’re not exactly sure of what it is that you want to achieve. Pick a signature piece: This is the most dominant item in a room and it adds to the all-round feeling of that particular space. Signature pieces also known as focal points, should project and emphasise the style that you are trying to create. It can be anything from your bed frame, a chest of drawers or a painting. Consider the function of the room: When decorating a room, have an idea of what the room will be used for. • Is there enough space for the activities that need to be done in that room? • Will your decorating style fit the room? If it is a play room, the theme and colour scheme should be bright, warm and playful, for example. If it’s your bedroom or a guest room, you might opt for something more serene and calming. Bottom line… Your home needs to be comfortable AND practical – not only good to look at. Let the light in: This goes for interior lighting and natural light. If you have wide windows, draw back the curtains and let the sunlight shine through. The natural light will reflect nicely off white walls and neutral earthy tones. Interior lighting in your home is vital when decorating as it adds to the ambience and should complement the theme of the room. You can choose from many different lighting fixtures like side lamps, hanging lamps, overhead fixtures and even chandeliers.

Kloof takes podium position at IsiZulu competition KALISHA NAICKER
Aphiwe Sosiba and Luthando Ncube.
TWO Kloof High School pupils participated in the first ever IsiZulu Best Speaker Competition recently. Aphiwe Sosiba and Luthando Ncube were given a topic each to research and then had to present a speech. Aphiwe spoke on “Zulus go back to your culture” and Luthando’s topic for the prepared speech was “Decisions”. The contest was a new and tough experience, but both pupils gave it their all. Sosiba was selected to go through to the second round where he was given two minutes to prepare a speech with the title “Ubuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu” (A person is a person only with the help of others). Sosiba systematically unpacked the topic in his speech and was rewarded with third place out of 13 places. “It was an amazing experience and I would recommend any Grade 11 to tackle it head-on,” he said.

Local to shine at Msunduzi Road Challenge KALISHA NAICKER DETERMINED local businessman and cycling enthusiast Tinus Havinga is set on keeping his brother’s legacy alive as he attempts to qualify for the UCI World Cycling Tour Finals in 2014 when he takes part in the Msunduzi Road Challenge on the 26 and 27 October in Noodsburg. Havinga had to travel abroad to Trento in Italy to secure his qualification for the
UWCT Final in Pietermaritzburg last year after he missed the chance during the Umsunduzi Road Challenge in 2011. ThattriptoTrentocameaboutafterhis brother, who had been diagnosed with cancer, encouraged him take on the challenge in Italy. Having given up a lot of his time in assisting his ailing brother, Havinga made the trip to Trento and qualified for the UWCT Finals in Pietermaritzburg in 2012.
This year he will be back as he takes on the Msunduzi Road Challenge again looking to qualify for the trip to the UWCT Final in Slovenia next year. “My brother’s legacy definitely inspired me to train with more focus and to appreciate the health that I’m fortunate to have,” Havinga said. “After qualifying for the UWCT final in Trento, Italy last year, the race I dedicated to him, I was determined to qualify for the 2013 Final back in Trento and now the

Msunduzi Road Challenge is the next step.” The route of the Msunduzi Road challenge has changed since 2011 and Havinga believes that the new route is great for the event and for spectators. “I think the new route is better than the old one and the only drawback is the rough sections of road which could prove to be alittletoughtomanagebutfromaspectator point of view it would be a lot better because the riders do 40 km laps,” he men-

LOOF High School held a quadrangular cricket tournament involving Hillcrest High School, St Henry’s Marist Brothers College, Thomas More College and themselves recently. The hosts were defending the title, butthecompetitionwouldbetoughwith each school having had a decent first half of the cricket season in term one. The day’s proceedings were kickstarted with a random draw to see which teams would face each other in the first round. The result was that Kloof would face up to St Henry’s while Hillcrest would face Thomas More. St Henry’s were restricted to 81 runs in the first
innings, with Kreesan Moodley (2-8) and Shaldon Narainsamy (2-11) having bowled particularly well in their fourover spells. Kloof would need 82 to close out the match and progress to the final. The opening pair of Keylin Madurai andShalsonNarainsamygotKloofoffto the perfect start with an opening stand of 35 before Madurai lost his wicket. Narainsamy went on to make an unbeaten 30 and with support from others, sealed a 7-wicket win inside 10 overs. Meanwhile Thomas More had defeated Hillcrest in a similar game to secure their place in the final alongside Kloof, while St Henry’s and Hillcrest would face each other in the playoff for third and fourth place. Thomas More batted first after winning the toss and posted a very competitive 137-8 despite having been 90-7 after 15 overs. Kloof was always battling to keep up with the run rate and lost wickets at regular intervals in pursuit of the cause. Ultimatelytheywere71alloutafterThomas More had bowled very tight making life difficult for the Kloof batsmen. Travis Preston (3-8) had done the bulk of the damage and was the day’s best bowler with figures of 5-25 in the two games. Hillcrest dominated the third and fourth play-off where they had posted in excess of 200 runs, with both openers scoring centuries. Thomas More were named the 2013 winners of the Kloof High School Cricket Festival.

HE DRSU Youth Rugby finals yielded a mixed bag for Hillcrest Villagers Junior Rugby Club last weekend when four of the club's team contested the league’s finals at Crusaders Rugby Club. The U13B team took gold in the first match of the day by default when their opposition failed to arrive for the match. The U15B battled against a Collegians outfit that have improved week on week during the season - this time the Kings Park based club managed a five-36 drubbing with Hillcrest onceagainhavingtosettleforthesilvermedals. Mention must be made of the gargantuan effort made by Alex Little who put his body on the
line and played courageously in attack and defence - one knock too many finally ending his game where he scored the only try of the day. The U16 match was always going to be a cracker - and so it proved. The Hillcrest boys came out firing in the first half-playingmostoftherugbyandlookinglikely to win the encounter. But the Varsity College Team had other ideas and came back strongly in the second half to make a game of it. The final score of 15-14 earned Hillcrest their second set of gold medals of the day in a match that would have compared with any school U16A match in the province for excitement and entertainment value. Shaun Stoltz and Tristan Dixon crossed the whitewash for Hillcrest with Bryce Kitching adding the extras via a conversion and a penalty. The 2014 season will commence in late February for the junior section for boys aged six to 11 years old.
