Become an Acknowledged Leader in Surface Engineering and Materials Finishing: INDUSTRY RECOGNISED TRAINING COURSES FROM THE IMF

Are you involved with the application of coatings to enhance and protect your products? Do you need to meet client specifications to ensure the longevity of your components? Does the complex world of surface engineering and materials finishing cause you headaches?

If so, the courses offered by the Institute of Materials Finishing (IMF) could be your solution!

The IMF have been promoting knowledge in the surface finishing industries, both inorganic surface treatments including plating and the application of organic paints, lacquers and varnishes for many years. Large numbers of engineers and technicians across a multitude of industries have benefitted from the knowledge gained to enhance their careers, their standing within industry and the ability to problem solve the many challenges they face in their daily working lives!

Starting with the Foundation level course, students gain knowledge on all aspects of materials finishing, specifically aimed at their own industry requirements, but to include sections on Health & Safety, the Environment and Surface Finishing and Corrosion Protection. There is no need for a science background to be able to successfully complete a foundation course.

The Foundation Course requires study of 15 sections and requires the submission of 2 marked assignments followed by an end examination. The course, conducted by distance learning will take 16 weeks to complete. There are three specific study routes to choose from; electroplating, organic coatings and aerospace finishing. On successful completion, the student is awarded the Foundation Certificate.

To follow on, students can then elect to progress to the Technician level modules, which give more in-depth knowledge for key finishing technologies, their application and best practice methods. Again, both inorganic and organic technologies can be studied to match the industry requirements. There is a choice of eight modules, which provide study in applicable areas of surface finishing best matched to your needs.

Like the Foundation course, study is by distance learning, and the student is required to complete four marked assignments and pass an examination.

Passing two technician modules leads to the award of Technician Certificate; passing four modules leads to the award of an Advanced Technician Certificate.

If you feel your career could benefit from being a recognised specialist in your particular branch of Surface Engineering or Materials Finishing, then contact the IMF today.

Speak with our training manager Karen Yates on +44 (0)121 622 7287 or email karen@materialsfinishing.org.

QUALICOAT UK AND IRELAND

A14

QUALICOAT UK & Ireland, based in the Midlands, is the National Association for QUALICOAT approved companies. QUALICOAT, based in Zurich, is a quality label organisation committed to maintaining and promoting the quality of powder coating on aluminium and its alloys for architectural applications.

When specifying architectural powder coating in its simplest form, just add ‘supplied by a QUALICOAT Licensed applicator’. There is no need to specify the powder supplier, or the pretreatment system as the licensed applicator will already be using QUALICOAT approved suppliers.

A QUALICOAT specification generally exceeds the BS EN 12206 specification for powder coating.

Options are of course specifiable, such as various finish gloss levels, various pretreatment options, various classes of powder and ‘Seaside’ class for more exposed sites.

Help with specifying is available through the QUALICOAT Association or from any licensed member.

LAUNCH OF INTERPON D FUTURA COLLECTION HELPS AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS DELIVER BEAUTY, SUSTAINABILITY AND STYLE IN A POWDER COATING

Designers and architects in the built environment in Australia and New Zealand can now benefit from the spectacular colour and performance of the Interpon D Futura Collection 2024-2025 of powder coatings from AkzoNobel, helping them imagine and realise a new vision in colour and enable their creations to reconnect with nature.

With a growing demand for exceptional finishes among the region’s architects and designers, the Interpon D Futura Collection comprises three brand new, on-trend colour palettes – Merging Worlds, Healing Nature and Soft Abstraction – to help transform the built environment, matching aesthetic quality with proven sustainability performance.

The new collection is the result of rigorous testing and scientific research

by AkzoNobel’s own in-house trend and colour specialists across multiple industries, and particularly those involved in the building and construction sector. It is also the result of more than two decades of development, during which the collections have inspired innovative designs all over the world.

Launched with the promise to ‘Futura your world’, the new range delivers a superdurable performance with a warranty up to 25-years, enabling architectural creations to stand the test of time.

As a powder coating, the collection is solvent-free and emits no volatile organic compounds which makes it a more sustainable

choice than liquid alternatives. Any overspray can also be recovered and reused to minimize waste.

Interpon D was the first range of architectural powder coatings to achieve an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) providing an independently verified assessment of a coatings’ environmental impact across its whole lifespan, supporting an architect’s sustainability ambitions and contributing directly to the evolution of ‘green buildings’.

Şirvan Canıtez, Commercial Director South Asia, AkzoNobel Powder Coatings says the Interpon D Futura Collection has been created with the future in mind: “Our new collection provides architects with world class colours that enable them to bring their imagination to life. It also provides a sustainable choice in powder coatings that both protects buildings and lowers the environmental footprint compared to other coating solutions.”

“The range demonstrates Interpon’s commitment to delivering the highest quality colours, textures and finishes to enable architects to Futura their world and ours. That’s why we are constantly innovating, while collaborating with our Global Aesthetic Center to use deep insight and scientific research to predict future trends and ensure they’re always one step ahead.”

For more information please visit www.akzonobel.com.

First for Sustainability

With our new Interpon D1036 Low-E powder coating, we’ve created an industry first: a powder coating that can cure as low as 150°C while still being Qualicoat class one certified. It can also cure up to 25% faster than conventional powders, reducing both energy consumption and carbon emissions, and significantly improving your coating line efficiency. Easy to apply Interpon D1036 Low-E has the same application properties as standard formulation, is backed by an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and has a global warranty of up to 15 years to deliver the quality performance, color and style your customers need. It is an innovation that supports our collective commitment to sustainability throughout the value chain.

BARIL COATINGS –SUSTAINABLE COATING SOLUTIONS

Making a difference

We help our clients sustainably protect their objects while reducing their carbon footprint at the same time. We do this by lengthening the lifespan of materials with less coating, using less harmful substances in our products, and producing our products in a low-emission manner.

We challenge ourselves day in, day out to improve our products in sustainability, efficiency, and quality. Our products must meet the highest quality standards. We believe that our clients shouldn't have to choose between sustainability, price, and quality.

Corporate social responsibility with renewable and circular raw materials, in an industry that is usually oldfashioned and polluting. We make the biggest difference with what goes into the products but live up to our proposition in every manner. Think of a factory running on our own solar panels, a fully electric vehicle fleet, and vegetarian catering at business events.

Painting a renewable future

Baril Coatings has deeply embedded the 'one-planet' philosophy in its mission and business operations. We are aware of our responsibility as a producer. Everything we put in, we want to get out. That's in our DNA. Our entire business process is

continuously examined, and we are constantly looking for more sustainable solutions without sacrificing quality.

Baril Coatings is therefore a real 'doing' company and shows sustainable commitment through actions. Our goal: to become the 'greenest paint company in the Netherlands.' And that translates into our mission: 100% renewable in 2030.

We aim for a greener future and make a difference with and through coatings and paint. That's what we call #paintingarenewablefuture.

Due to the reaction with moisture from the air, a very dense molecular mesh forms. This mesh makes the coating very strong and flexible. With this technology, we prove that it is possible to combine outstanding quality, processability, and sustainability in one product. Additionally, the technology behind DualCure allows this to be done with thinner layers than conventional paint systems and have a CX paint system applied in 1 day.

SteelKote - guarantees extreme corrosion resistance in all atmospheric conditions (according to ISO 12944).

SteelKote is highly abrasion resistant and thus offers the perfect protection in any corrosion class, for conventienional projects. The big difference: SteelKote is also available biobased.

Bariline Coatings –are perfect as anticorrosive finishes in colour on blasted steel. As a one-layer paint system, Bariline is used as a finish for steel constructions and containers that don't come into contact with water. The coatings are also well-suited for protecting steel constructions during the construction period.

Aquaran coatings - are water-based one- and two-component solutions for industrial product finishing and optimal protection of steel constructions. With this, excellent results are achieved. Our Aquaran coatings compare favourably with traditional solvent-based coatings in terms of sustainability.

As we said: a solution for every surface. Ask our team for information about your solution.

MEDIUM-TEMPERATURE SEALING PROMISES ENERGY SAVINGS

Due to rising energy prices, energy-rich processes such as the anodising process continue to be in strong focus. With its mediumtemperature sealing, Chemetall a manufacturer of specialty chemical products supplies an additive that can achieve considerable energy savings in the compression process.

Electrolytic anodising of aluminium is one of the most energy-intensive finishing techniques in surface treatment due to its high power and energy requirements. Especially in the last treatment step, bath temperatures of up to 98°C are required during hot sealing.

With the Gardo Seal 1999, Chemetall supplies a Qualanod-approved medium-temperature sealing system that enables energy savings of up to 30%.

Energy savings that are potentiated

By using 0.3% Gardo Seal 1999, a classic hot sealing bath can be converted to a medium temperature sealing. For this purpose, the operating temperature can be reduced by approx. 10°C from 98 to 88°C. The sealing times remain at a maximum of 3 min/µm. Gardo Seal 1999 ensures both a residue-free surface and good compaction values.

By lowering the temperature, there are a number of energy saving opportunities. First, of course, there is the obvious saving due to the lower heating of the bath and the reduced energy input during temperature maintenance. The achieved

temperature difference of ~10°C saves 10 to 15% energy during heating up to the operating temperature of 88°C. In addition, the holding temperature of 88°C saves a further 10 to 20% energy compared with conventional hot sealing.

Another point worth mentioning, is the reduction of evaporation. Although sealing balls often minimise the greatest evaporation effects, further benefits can be achieved by lowering the temperature. For example, the internal vapour pressure and the associated evaporation rate of the sealer at 88°C is reduced by up to 30%. In addition, the reduction in evaporation means that the entire plant structure, the transport system plus the employees are exposed to less water vapour. Thus, the use of the Gardo Seal 1999 reduces the corrosion effects on the plant technology and improves the plant management.

Increase flexibility

Not only can energy savings be achieved by using the Gardo Seal 1999, it can also increase the end users flexibility due to its high performance at high temperatures.

For example, at an application temperature of 98°C, Gardo Seal 1999 can achieve reduced compaction times of 2 min/ µm and beyond. This means a time saving of up to 33% compared to a classic hot sealing, while at

the same time achieving optimum compaction values.

Although the sealing baths in an anodising plant do not usually represent the immediate bottleneck, there are various scenarios that certainly support an increase in throughput. Chemetall works with the end user to determine the highest possible potential for optimisation. This can be savings of complete anodising baths, additions of anodising baths to increase throughput or shortening of anodising times.

Further potential

The full potential of saving energy or increasing throughput is demonstrated by the combination of Gardo Seal 1999 with the anodising additive Gardobond Additive H 7526. This product combination enables customers to run up to 30% higher throughputs on an anodising line while maintaining the same quality. The flexibility of the system allows customers to decide for themselves whether they want to focus on energy savings or on increasing throughput.

Programming modalities offered by CMA robotics

Self-teaching: The operator manually guides a special robot that is suitably relieved and balanced with a sophisticated electronic and pneumatic system, performing a complete spraying cycle on a sample part. All the trajectories and commands executed are memorized on the control computer and then reproduced accurately at the required execution speed. This approach makes the use of the robot very user-friendly, as no complicated programming steps are necessary.

VR Tracking: This is an evolution of the self-learning system in which the robot moves manually. In this case, the robot is not moved, but a special joystick is used, which is very light and manoeuvrable, to which the spray gun is attached. The trajectories are acquired by a series of sensors and memorized to create the complete painting program; in short, the painter manually paints an initial piece so that a common CMA robot can replicate it.

Offline Programming: Simulation of the spraying cycle with 3D graphics of the sample to be coated showing details such as the depth of material applied. In this way, a realistic reproduction of the complete spraying cycle is displayed and all the parameters can be set to optimize the process directly from the computer workstation.

PTP Programming: Using the supplied Teach Pendant, all the points of the spraying program are stored in order to create cycle trajectories and set parameters to optimize the final result. The robot itself can also capture these points manually. With this technique, the robot can work on small objects and series as well as large elements of any size.

AXPS Vision Systems: The removal of manual programming of work cycles. This is a form of artificial intelligence, in which robots use 2D or 3D vision systems to view the object to be sprayed and, thanks to special CMA software, generate the spraying program. This intelligent and automatic process eliminates the time-consuming and laborious programming phase. The robot is able to create a spraying program on its own without the need for human intervention.

CORRODERE ACADEMY

COATING SURVEYS’ STUDENTS

RECEIVE FREE ACCESS TO THE COATINGS RADAR APP

coating surveys. It’s already being referred to as the bible for coating surveys.”

All students enrolled on Corrodere Academy’s Coating Surveys course gain free access to the groundbreaking Coatings Radar App. This innovative tool provides clear and concise visualisations to compare coatings with international standards for rusting, blistering, flaking, and cracking. It enables users to assess coating conditions against the Re and Ri scales, even for coatings immersed in seawater.

“The idea was mine as I do a lot of coatings surveys and have to review a lot of coating surveys for clients,” explains Brendan Fitzsimons, Managing Director of Fitz-Coatings Ltd. “There is no particular

industry standard, and there’s a lot of inconsistency regarding coatings surveys. The app was developed to give the industry the consistency it needs and covers every aspect of conducting

Originally created to support students of Corrodere Academy’s Coating Surveys course, the app also features Fitz’s Atlas of Coating Surveys within the Manuals and Standards section. The app has since evolved to offer corporate packages, allowing companies to purchase licenses for multiple employees. A bespoke version of the app can even be customised with company logos, colours, and additional functionalities, such as importing PDFs, making it a flexible tool for businesses.

Development Journey

The Coatings Radar App took two years to develop. “A specialist software engineer was employed to take the idea and produce the app,” says Fitzsimons. Compatible with iPhones, iPads, iMacs, Android devices, and tablets, the app is workplace-ready, functioning without the need for WiFi. Before its launch, the app underwent rigorous review by 20 coating specialists worldwide and is currently in long-term field testing with leading paint companies, inspection organisations, and consultants. Looking to the future, Fitzsimons revealed plans for 2025 upgrades, including web support, report writing tools, and a photo library interface.

Interactive Features

The Coatings Radar App is a comprehensive tool with several key sections, including Rust Scale, Paints & Varnishes, Industrial Structures, and Industrial Tests.

Rust Scale

The app uses the Re Scale, an international standard for assessing rusting, alongside examples from real-world structures like marine vessels, offshore platforms, and petrochemical plants. It offers detailed guidance for identifying rust staining, coating conditions, and vulnerable areas, including welds and edges.

Paints & Varnishes

The app features interactive tools aligned with ISO 4628, which evaluates coating degradation. Users can adjust visualisations for blistering, rusting, cracking, and flaking to match real-life scenarios, making it easier to communicate findings and compare against standards.

Industrial Structures and Manuals

The app enables users to compare rust

levels on new and old structures while referencing standards like ISO 4628-3. Additionally, it includes a wealth of resources on coating adhesion, thickness measurement, and sampling techniques.

Industry Impact

The Coatings Radar App has been praised for its practicality and reliability. “Having this ‘in the pocket’ of an inspector is a great day-to-day tool,” says Rob Marsden of Jotun.

By combining advanced digital tools with industry expertise, the Coatings Radar App has transformed the way coating surveys are conducted, offering a reliable resource for professionals worldwide.

POSITECTOR SERIES: Revolutionising Coating Inspection by DFT Instruments UK Ltd

and DeFelsko

The PosiTector series, developed by DeFelsko, the leading US manufacturer of paint inspection equipment, offers a versatile and cost-effective solution for coating applicators and inspectors. The system allows users to easily swap interchangeable probes with a single PosiTector gauge body, streamlining multiple inspection tasks with one device.

Versatile Gauge Body and Models

The PosiTector gauge body is available in two models: Standard and Advanced. Both feature a large touchscreen display, user-friendly navigation, internal memory, and an IP65-rated enclosure. The Advanced model adds Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, additional memory, onscreen graphing, and advanced probe features, such as the ability to take over 180 readings per minute in scan mode (PosiTector 6000) or measure up to three layers on non-metal substrates between 13-7800um with the 200 series probe.

The latest PosiTector gauge body is fully compatible with all PosiTector probes manufactured since 2012. This backward compatibility allows the gauge body to easily convert into various inspection tools, such as a dew point meter, surface profile meter, soluble salt tester, hardness tester, gloss meter, or ultrasonic wall thickness gauge, making it highly adaptable to different needs.

Quick and Easy Probe Changes

Changing probes on the PosiTector system is simple. There is no need to turn off the device—just slide the probe out, following the arrows on the back, and insert another probe. The gauge body automatically recognizes the new probe and retains all settings, including calibration, language preferences, and measurement units. This seamless probe switching eliminates the need to relearn menu functions, saving time during inspections.

The system also helps reduce costs and space by allowing users to consolidate all inspection equipment into one compact case. You can start with a single probe and expand your collection over time or opt for a standard or custom kit to suit your specific needs.

Advanced Features and Connectivity

The PosiTector Advanced gauge body offers additional features that enhance inspection efficiency. When connected to the PosiTector 6000, users can access specialized modes like PA2, 90/10, and 19840, along with Smartbatch functionality for the PosiTector SPG. The dew point meter includes trend charts and live graphing, providing deeper insights during inspections.

PosiTector’s integration with the PosiSoft Software Suite makes it easy to compile professional reports. You can download readings from multiple probes and generate

multi-batch PDF reports, simplifying data analysis and presentation. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity allow for easy report generation in the field or remote data transfer to a computer.

Simplified Inspections with Prompted Batch Mode

The PosiTector 6000, 200, and UTG gauges feature a “Prompted Batch Mode,” which simplifies inspections by providing on-screen prompts for each measurement. This is particularly useful for repetitive jobs or when specific measurement locations are required. Multiple templates can be stored, allowing for consistent and efficient inspections.

Minimized Downtime with Recertification

For companies with multiple probes, the PosiTector system reduces downtime by allowing only the probes to be sent for recertification, not the entire gauge body. This means the gauge body remains in service, eliminating the need for recalibration.

Cost-Effective and Space-Saving

The PosiTector range offers significant cost savings by allowing multiple probes to share a single gauge body. Kits are available in medium, large, and heavy-duty Pelican cases with customizable interiors, saving space and reducing the number of cases needed.

PSI GLOBAL TRAINING CLOSING THE SKILLS GAP

Following two strong years of growth, PSI Global Training is looking to expand upon it’s offering of courses for prospective and current professionals in the Industrial Services sector, adding to the already successful Industrial Painting courses currently offered.

PSI Global Training began following PSI Global Recruitment becoming the first agency affiliate member of Train the Painter in 2022. This was a great opportunity to help close the skills gap in the industry and get more people in the communities PSI Global operates in back to work. Following a successful start, the dedicated training centre in the North West was opened in late 2023.

Closing the Skills Gap

Much of the training initially done was on site for various clients of PSI Global. A skills gap within the on-site workforce would be identified by the employer who would then contact PSI Global Training Director Rebecca Law to discuss a bespoke training session on-site.

“We set up the training school as a way of addressing the skills shortage in our industry, while also wanting to encourage young people to consider this as a career option,” explained Rebecca. “Running these courses on-site, whether upskilling or teaching a new skill, was a way of helping our clients while also seeing the potential for growth in this division.”

PSI Global’s team of experienced trainers and consultants continue to work closely with clients to identify their unique needs, and design customised training programs that help them meet their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and community engagement goals.

The company works with a diverse range of clients, including large corporations, small businesses, non-profits, and government agencies. Each client

approaches PSI Global with the aim of helping to make a positive impact on their communities, and they trust the team to help them achieve their goals.

Building a Dedicated Training Centre

As the business continued to grow, so did the need for a dedicated training centre to run regular courses from. Leveraging the latest technology and teaching methods, PSI Global Training created a program of courses to ensure engaging, interactive, and effective training took place during each session.

With this plan and program in place, the Training Centre began to take form and officially opened its doors in November 2023. Located in the North West, the state-of-the-art facility has given a number of people the opportunity to not only upskill, but to kickstart their career in Industrial Painting. Many have come with the help of a grant from the local Job Centre, and through this programme PSI Global Training has put a number of people back to work.

“Opening this facility marks an exciting step forward in our commitment to building careers in the industrial coatings sector," said Rebecca. "Through initiatives like our partnership with the Job Centre, we're not only filling crucial skills gaps but also creating pathways for new talent to gain meaningful, hands-on experience. This facility is designed to be more than just a training centre – it’s a launchpad for careers that support essential industries and skills.”

The courses are led by experienced instructor Jonathan Hewitt, who maintains consistency in providing high quality training to help individuals develop the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in their career. Helping students achieve their goals is an important step in bridging the skills gap and addressing an issue that’s become all too common in the industry.

“I’ve been privileged and honoured to work with some of the best in the industry, which today has given me the opportunity to be able to give back to the next generation of Painters, Blasters, and Sprayers,” Jonathan shared.

Continued Growth and Opportunity

PSI Global Training is dedicated to building a workforce for the future. The team is committed to helping organisations develop and implement effective strategies to get more people back to work and are committed to helping workers succeed and progress in their career.

With that in mind, the company is looking ahead to offer not only Train the Painter courses, but a wide range of courses for professionals across a number of sectors, including Construction, Rail, Civils, and more. The additional courses available from late 2024 will include GWO (Basic Safety Training, Advanced Rescue), IRATA (Rope Access Level 1-3), Offshore Medicals, CITB (CSCS Card Test, SSSTS, SMSTS, etc.), and City & Guilds Confined Space.

In addition to these courses, the training division also became accredited to ECITB in October 2024, which means expanding the course offering further. This will include CCNSG (safety passports and renewal), and short courses covering Working at Height, Manual Handling, Abrasive Wheels, and Confined Space.

PSI Global Training will also be able to provide Technical Testing for a wide range of skills including Industrial Coatings Brush Application, Airless Spray Application, and Abrasive Blast Cleaning. Beyond this, the Training division are also approved to deliver further tests that include Welding, Pipefitting, and Thermal Insulation.

If you would like to learn more about PSI Global Training or to discuss creating a bespoke training courses on your site, contact Training Director Rebecca Law at Bookings@psiglobaltraining.com.

MAXIMISE THE POTENTIAL OF YOUR PRE-TREATMENT SYSTEM

If you are in the metal finishing industry, then you have many different options when it comes to preparing your products prior to painting. One of those many possibilities for you is to chemically pre-treat your components. The most common types of chemical pre-treatments are applied in immersion or spray systems similar to those in the image.

The reasons for pre-treating components are essentially to increase adhesion, and corrosion protection of the substrate or paint system being utilised. Phosphates and chromates have been the go to products for many years, but with Health & Safety, and environmental sustainability at the forefront of people’s minds and design concepts, it may well now be the time to consider changing to one of BONDERITES new generation coatings.

Some of the benefits of using these new generation coatings are;

They create less sludge.

They contain less harmful chemicals

They can operate at lower temperatures.

They are easy to control,

They can process multiple metal through the same stage

Both cleaner and conversion coating can sometimes be combined in the same stage.

With traditional pre-treatment chemicals, regular removal of sludge from treatment baths is required. Theses maintenance days are not only

expensive, they are time consuming, often performed on a weekend with the necessary overtime rates paid to staff. Specialist contractors may have to be employed for waste removal or disposal, and your staff are often in very close proximity to what on times can be hazardous chemicals. So it would be nice then for pre-treatment chemicals to have the ability of extending the life of the bath. With the new generation coatings, bath life can be extended, and this saves you money. Due to the reduced amount of sludge being created with BONDERITE NGC’s, it has the added H&S and financial benefits of extending time between bath maintenance, thus reducing the proximity and contact time of operators with the chemicals. A win, win situation then.

Customers with traditional set ups often utilise two stages, one for the for the cleaner and one for the conversion coating. Also with traditional products operating anywhere between 35 – 65

degrees, and in the two stages, switching to one cleaner / conversion coating bath at ambient temperature can massively reduce the gas or electric costs of running the process. But the savings do not end there, as BONDERITES new generation coatings operate at lower temperatures which again helps to reduce those bills. Coupled to the fact that the reduction in stages can offer the side benefit of allowing you to process quicker through pre-treatment, creating the potential of greater throughput. So as you can see, the NGC’s are great for your green credentials too!

So, in summary, these NGC’s can be easier to operate, easier to control, cheaper to run, have Environmental and H&S benefits. Stowlin can assist you in maximising the potential of your pre- treatment system, and for further information contact the Stowlin Sales team on 0116 278 5373 or come and visit us at the Surface World show on stand E34.

ALL THE CONTROL YOU COULD WISH FOR?

Do you have an effluent plant to control your discharge to the mains water supply?

Are you always worried that it will drift out of specification?

Do you spend time manually topping up chemicals, with associated risks to operator H&S, and wasted chemicals?

At a time when the environment, sustainability and operator safety has never been as important, the removal of chemical handling, and excessive chemical use, can only be seen as a benefit. The automatic dosing units remove these unnecessary risks, not to forget the hidden costs by constantly monitoring the PH of the solution.

Stowlin can offer effluent process control at various levels of sophistication.

BONDERITE E-AP VMS is a dosing system which can be set up to dose either acid or alkali into a neutralisation pit, a simple, reliable, inexpensive, long term solution.

BONDERITE E-CO LDS PH is a more sophisticated system with pumps for acid and alkali neutralisation. The system comes with the ERMES cloud based datalogging as standard and can be ordered with either WIFI or LAN connectivity. The ERMES system allows for access of process data not only in real-time, but stored as historical data. This is not only imperative for the user to evidence environmental compliance, but also to investigate trends for use in continuous improvement projects, and of course in general process refinement.

The beauty of the system is that information can be accessed via phone, tablet, laptop or PC, so you can stay connected and informed wherever you are, and whenever you want.

The system continually monitors the chemistry via in line probes, and the information recorded and outputted to the systems ERMES software.

The software plots this output as an SPC style graph, and it can be set up to send an e-mail to a chosen contact if the process drifts out of specification.

Bespoke systems can be tailored to suit more complicated set-ups, and to the customers exact needs, using either of four channel controller BONDERITE E-CO ST4 or our 6 channel controller, the BONDERITE E-CO FLEX. For installations of this nature a site survey is required.

The SPC style charts are shown above, and it is evident that the peaks and troughs that are associated with manual chemical additions are smoothed out to provide a consistent, in specification process when the system is automatically dosed, and automatically monitored.

So in summary, these cost effective dosing units offer the customer confidence that their process is within specification due to the fact that tanks are constantly monitored and adjusted. They offer remote interaction, and access stored with real data via the internet address, they can notify you via e mail if there is any drift in the process.

If you would like to know whether these safety, environmental and financial savings and benefits can be applied to your process, or if you would like information on any other BONDERITE product please do not hesitate to contact the Stowlin sales team on 0116 278 5373 or visit us at Surface World Show, stand E34.

TENABLE UPGRADE 20-YEAR-OLD

CLEANING MACHINE WITH ULTRAMODERN, ENVIRONMENTALLY-

FRIENDLY SYSTEM FROM TURBEX

The Breakdown

The Customer: Tenable Screw Company

The Challenge: Replace an ageing, unsustainable solvent cleaning system with a modern, eco-conscious alternative.

The Conclusion: Tenable are thrilled with the improved efficiency, reliability, and safety offered by the Karl Roll system. They’re also benefiting from a new and improved relationship with Turbex and Karl Roll for after-care service and maintenance support.

Who are Tenable?

Manufacturers of precision machined components, Tenable are a family-owned business with three sites in the UK: London, Coventry, and Malborough.

They operate primarily as a subcontractor for the turned parts industry, but their broad portfolio of clients ranges from automotive and medical firms, to construction and defence businesses. They’re primarily known for producing electrical connectors, and here, degreasing is essential to remove oil and other contaminants.

To improve process security and effectiveness, James King, Production Manager, started the hunt to replace their ageing cleaning equipment.

An urgent need to modernise their cleaning process

Prior to upgrading with Turbex, Tenable ran a single degreasing plant to service 77 sliding head lathes. As their business grew, they recognised the risks associated with only having a single, older cleaning system available.

The solvent cleaning machine in question was ageing considerably. It was 20 years old, used less desirable chemicals - meaning it fell behind the sustainability and safety curveand was extremely expensive and difficult to maintain.

The machine's UK service had become massively limited, often taking up to a month, harming Tenable’s process security.

To modernise their cleaning processes and prepare for increased production, Tenable’s owners decided to invest in Dowclene 1601, a modified alcohol solution. As a result, their cleaning would rely on more eco-friendly substances, and the customers demanding stronger environmental standards would be satisfied.

Discover the Karl Roll RCTS

Karl Roll nonhalogenated solvent machines

Suitable for a myriad of tasks – from ultra-fine cleaning to degreasing – Karl Roll’s nonhalogenated solvent machines provide a fantastic eco-alternative to traditional solvent cleaning.

“The RCTS Advantage 2 is an excellent addition to our production operations here at Tenable; it represents our first modified alcohol 1601 cleaning machine.

This investment is a long-term strategic decision for us based on the increasing demand from certain industries which require modified alcohol as opposed to alternative solvents.

As a sub-contractor, it is key for us to be able to cater to as many of our customers' specific requirements as possible.”

How Turbex helped

The project arose from Turbex’s Simon Graham, who used his wealth of knowledge and industry connections to bring Tenable and Turbex together. Tenable was already considering the Karl Roll RCTS, and was pleased to discover that Turbex was their sole UK representative.

To start, Tenable visited the Karl Roll factory with Turbex’s Simon Graham, who understood their technical requirements through a strong working relationship.

During the visit, Tenable was impressed by the younger workforce and the range of staff who passed knowledge down through the generations. John Huntingdon, Turbex’s Managing Director, also arranged a visit to Turbex’s facilities in Alton, Hampshire.

Here, the Turbex team also showcased their ability to provide greatly improved servicing and local spares. Tenable decided on the Karl Roll RCTS, and it was fully operational in March 2024.

The machine’s installation was swift and assisted by an engineer visiting from Germany.

“With the recent addition of Karl Roll into our range, and with Simon’s help on the technical aspects of solvent cleaning, Turbex was perfectly positioned to support this project.

We can now supply this market with confidence for customers across the UK.”

John Huntingdon - Managing Director, Turbex James King - Production Manager, Tenable

The results

This Karl Roll system quickly helped Tenable achieve high standards for part cleanliness and customer satisfaction.

Initially, the team allocated a 6-month transition period for the RCTS system using the old machine as the primary, but once it arrived, it became the primary machine within 3 months.

The staff on the shop floor have reported overwhelmingly positive feedback; they appreciate the machine’s userfriendliness and modern amenities. The twenty-year development gap has made a big difference, especially regarding fault-finding and problem-solving software.

Stronger and more environmentally friendly cleaning results.

Well-prepared for increased capacity and manufacturing.

Secure and safe with local support, servicing, and spare parts.
