Bridge is an interesting game where you keep learning and improving upon you knowledge even at very old age and this is a game you can still play and enjoy even after 80 when your physical abilites drop. For the benefit of non Bridge players who might be interested in solving the monthly puzzles, a few tips. 1. 4 persons countribute a card each and it is known as a brick. Hence there are 13 bricks in a pack. 2. A is the highest card followed by K, QJ, 10-9...2 in that order. 3. If you have a card in a suit you have to follow suit else discard any useless card in a no trump contract in a trump contract you can Ruff with a trump if you don’t follow suit. 4. The base number of bricks is 6 and this is added to the final number of the contract to arrive at the number bricks. eg 3NT mean 6+3=9 bricks 4 spades means 6+4=10 bricks. KQJ9 10 87532 1065 A AK5 QJ6 AKJ432

The first person to mail the correct solution will get a prize. vidhubas45@yahoo.co.in

3NT HQ head. you have to make 9 bricks.

Happy Bridging

Patience- Persistence A woman in a supermarket follows a grandfather and his badly behaved 3 year-old grandson. It’s obvious to her that the grandfather has his hands full with the child screaming for sweets in the sweet aisle, biscuits in the biscuits aisle; and for fruit, cereal and cola in the other aisles. However, he works his way around, saying in a controlled voice, “Easy, William, we won’t be long easy, boy.” Another outburst, and she hears the grandfather calmly say, “It’s okay, William, just a couple more minutes and we’ll be out of here. Hang in there, boy.” At the checkout, the little terror starts throwing items out of the cart, and Granddad says again in a controlled voice, 4 | September 2016

“William, William, relax buddy, don’t get upset. We’ll be home in five minutes; stay cool, William.” Very impressed, the woman goes outside where the grandfather is loading his groceries and the boy into the car. She said to the elderly gentleman, “It’s none of my business, but you were amazing in there. I don’t know how you did it. That whole time, you kept your composure, and no matter how loud and disruptive he got, you just calmly kept saying things would be okay. William is very lucky to have you as his grandpa.” “Thanks,” said the grandfather, “but I’m William . .. . the little boy’s name is Kevin.”

CEG 1975

SOJURN IN YERCAUD The 1975 Batch Mates of College of Engineering, Guindy, affectionately called as “Guindy 1975 Team” embarked on a memorable sojurn to the Hilly Resort of Yercaud near Salem which is surrounded by the sylvan scenic Shevaroy Hills, It was a short and sweet three day trip 27/07/16 to 29/07/16. With all the spirit that comes with the “Team”, eagerness, enthusiasm and energy twenty five of us including spouses boarded the Coimbatore bound Shathabdi Express from Chennai on the morning of 27/07/16. It was one strange occasion where we senior citizens instead of enjoying a discounted fare ended up paying almost twice the fare. Thanks to the very last second drop outs of about 12 members. Our compartment wore a colourful look. Gossip and fun in abundance breakfast took the back seat. Yet the responsible organisers like in weddings, went round and enquired whether everyone had breakfast and if it was good. We reached Salem Junction around 11.30AM, and were joined by a member couple from Bengaluru. Two mini buses with blaring music carried us from Salem Junction, Winding through the hills to our destination Grand Palace Hotel at Yercaud Hill. The hotel set in an idyllic locale and an elevated place offered a superb panoramic view of the entire area. An enjoyable Lunch and good rest followed and soon all were set for the evening proceedings in the beautiful lawns overlooking the hills. We had enjoyable bouts of Tambola, Antakshari which were inspired by all the members and the passing fog made it all the more memorable. Weather gods were kind and showed us a glimpse of rains too that evening. Upon our completion of Dinner, amidst a light drizzle we lit the Bon Fire when some of our members rendered melodious numbers of yester years least worried about the pitch or tune. Day 2 was fresh from the start, members after a lively breakfast, undertook local tours to places of interest. Viz. Ladies Seat, Gentlemen Seat, Shervaroyan Temple, Botanical Garden , Rose Garden and ended first session with a Boat Ride in the Lake. Age did not deter our thrill and amazement watching nature’s bounty. That evening was full of music and dance, with melodious music interspersed with apt and lively comical film comments provided by a DJ. The entire group enjoyed the programme, taking to stage and shaking their legs. Few danced away to sweat. The DJ catering exclusively to a senior group for the first time was left wondering at the attitude of this bunch of old boys.

Bon Fire followed Dinner with the DJ providing the background music and went on till rain played spoilsport. All woke up to heavy showers on Day 3 which subsided in time for the program to start. Some of our members undertook a pilgrimage of the famous Hanuman and Lakshmi Narasimhar shrine located in Namakkal about 45KM from Salem. Rest of the lot made it to Killiyur Falls not very far away from Yercaud. Truly a breath taking sight with water in full gush , and we were required to climb down about 240 steps below the Ground Level amidst a valley and forest in order to reach the foot of the Water Fall. Despite our strenuous efforts in reaching there, it was all the way entertaining for us, since there was a heavy gush of water falling after the rains. After a light lunch, we made our return to Salem, not before making some local purchases of hill grown stuff in the market. We returned to Chennai around 10.30 PM on 29/07/16, by the Shathabdi Express, with lot of fun and frolic amidst our ever mingling team members. Yercaud though not the queen of hills left an indelible mark in all our minds. A place to unwind with family and friends. Mark it in the must visit category. S.Karunagaran (M. ReUnite ReVisit ReLive, Be yourself ....... again - A write up on the Silver Jubilee Reunion of the Class of 91, College of Engineering, Guindy It was five years ago after the successful conduct of their 20th reunion that the CEG class of 1991 decided that their silver jubilee should be even grander. Over 100 people had attended the 20th reunion. A core group or should we say a hardcore band of enthusiastic volunteers took the job upon themselves. The one thing that they told themselves was that whatever happens in the reunion is going to be less important than how many people would attend it. Because meeting old friends in flesh and blood than any swankiness of the event itself. This was the only thing they repeatedly told themselves in 2014 when they met first for kicking off the silver jubilee reunion planning. Yes, 2014. That’s how early they started for their silver jubilee to happen in 2016. The story of how they used the last two years is a separate story worth telling that is even more interesting than how the silver jubilee reunion was conducted. The only thing that would matter they decided would be the number of people whom they can excite to attend. A quick count of available phone numbers and active emails on the yahoo group was not an encouraging one. Some smaller branches like Production,

6 | September 2016

Civil and Industrial had just but one or two people in the group. A committee was set up with representatives from each branch. Whatsapp came in handy. Given the then limit of 100 members in a whatsapp group, separate groups for each branch was formed. Everyone was asked as to who all in touch with and social media like Facebook and Linkedin were scoured to search for the others. This was not easy too given that everyone had expanded their initials and today’s names on Linkedin were the full passport names. Yearbooks of each branch was then pulled out to check for the father’s name and linkedin searches were done. It was trickier for the women. They had long given up their father’s names and had husband’s father’s names as their surnames on social media. The branch coordinators jumped into their memorabilia to dig out wedding invitation cards to identify husband names. After locating many on social media and reconnecting with them they were added to the individual branch whatsapp groups. Then there were some whose trails had run cold. They had withdrawn into a cocoon and gone on with their lives. Those who had gone into business, into government service and being homemakers hadn’t bothered much with keeping a LinkedIn profile. That is when they

realized that online presence and social media are just echo chambers of people who are already there and if they are going to make any difference to the attendance they had to get out and do some legwork. All the yearbooks were pulled out and an enthusiastic set of people in each branch set out to go the addresses given in the yearbooks. Some truly unique experiences emerged. Door numbers and telephone numbers had changed in some cases. Batch mates who are currently working in telephone companies came in handy. Old numbers were given and new numbers were got. That is when gold was struck. In some places, parents were meet and boy were they delighted to hear from them. Some searches were even more unique stories. One of the ECE batch mates was from Nagaland and there was no way to despatch anyone home. Google search threw up his name as a football club secretary. The football club number was called to find out that he is not the secretary anymore but a

number to his shop was helpfully given. He was delighted to hear a voice from 25 years ago and he attended the reunion with his family. Another EEE batch mate had no online presence. Her friend pulled out her address from her autograph book. Another friend’s colleague in Trichy was roped in and he was kind enough to visit the home. The batch mate’s sister was met who was delighted and suspicious both at the same time. She relaxed only when she heard a gleeful “Akkkaaa” from a voice that had visited her home for a meal 25 years ago. The batch mate had moved to another town and she was a successful entrepreneur now. This mobilization that went on for more than a year was the singular reason the attendance almost doubled from 100 in the 20th year reunion to 200 plus in the silver jubilee reunion. The event was a gala success. The event needed a theme. The team turned to one of the creative brains from among their class and bingo he suggested, Be yourself, again. This caught everyone’s imagination. College was the only time that any person is himself or herself. After passing out, we have started playing so many roles and wearing so many masks that we are a pale imitation of that joyous soul that we were all in college. 2.5 days of reliving the past on Jul 8th, 9th and 10th 2016 – we as an alumni of CEG 91 ( College of Engineering Guindy) were transformed to 1987 when we had entered the portals of this prestigious institution as a batch of 420 people with numerous aspirations and dreams. We had a curtain raiser event on Jul 8th 2016 and had met branch wise – joyous moments since many of them had met for the first time after 25 years. Hugs, handshakes and firm hands grabbing the arms saying i am there too – don’t forget me. That was the feeling that was circulating in the air when the team had met in the campus. They visited their departments the sprawling drawing halls which had

accommodated us during our semester examinations, the class rooms, labs and the walls all were resounding with laughter much more than the current batch of students. On Jul 9th 2016 176 alumni assembled at 8.30 am at Vivekananda auditorium for the formal function. The total gathering was a 300 member group with Alumni, Spouses, and kids. The CEG 91 Anna University choir group got together on stage after 25 years to sing the Tamil Thai Vaazthu. It was a goose pimple moment. The meeting started after observing a one minute silence for the departed souls of our batch. The function was presided by our Dean / Director of Engg Dr T R Jagadeesan from 1987 to 1991 and had anecdotes of the events of the past and a message on the completeness of education. The batch felt truly honoured and blessed to hear him in person all over again. He got a spontaneous standing ovation after his speech. The faculty members who taught way back and who had attended the function were felicitated and thanked with a Silver coin as a memento of the bonding with CEG. The gathering was regaled with an interesting collection of photographs with the song nyabagam varudhey playing in the background. The gathering came alive when they realized that the song had been customized to highlight the naughty moments specific to our batch. The gathering also gave itself the onerous and honourable task of setting up a trust to pursue activities to benefit deserving students in the CEG institution and build skill to bridge gaps for students. Many alumni have pledged money for this trust to carry out these activities. The customary vote of thanks followed by the national anthem again by the 91 batch choir brought the formal function to a close. 8 | September 2016

After a functional lunch was served for the attendees, six buses plied from Guindy to Manjakuppam near Pondicherry to Oceanspray resort to transport the guests to spend the day and after. The guests were welcomed with traditional Nadahaswaram specially organized for the occasion by one of our thoughtful batch mates. Shell garlands and kumkum. The guests checked in and started off with cultural event performed by alumni, spouses and kids in full enthusiasm. The evening was brought to a memorable close with a spectacular display of fireworks that lit up the sky over the Bay of Bengal. Nobody wanted to retire and there were small small groups all over the resort doing small talk till the wee hours. Some retired only at the crack of dawn. They retired after a nostalgic trip down memory lane to be woken up by the jubilant rays of the sun pushing some enthusiasts to check out the beach. After a refreshing breakfast the adieus and au revoir the group boarded the buses to be brought back the campus at 1 pm. This was a refreshing gathering where people gathered and felt as one – but longed and craved for another reunion. The 2.5 days that went past was reminiscent of the fact that alumni’s felt that they were themselves again – there was no mind block - is it due to maturity , experience, exposure - all of us got along like crystal clear running water. There was so much of mutual respect, admiration and camaraderie. No one talked about current position where you are employed , current scope of work but connected from the spot where we had left 25 years ago. Kudos to the batch that made this possible - Friendship may be said to be on its throne when it possesses the power of supporting one at all times (without any discrimination) and under all circumstances as Thiruvalluvar had said. M. Aneez (M. No. 2054)

Reunion 20 years

It is nostalgic when we entered the gates of College of Engineering after a long long time. Time and place is communicated to most of our classmates and everybody was eager to see each other and pass on pleasantries. This is our 20th year reunion and was successful in bringing together most of the friends who were scattered around the world and are travelling frequently. To make this meet complete and poignant, our own staff members were invited, even though many of them have retired they were very obliging to join us. This was on August 6th 2016, Saturday morning, everybody is arriving one by one at the gate of Department of Printing Technology and it was a different experience altogether for everyone and for some of them it was just a second or third visit after the completion of the course. Even the staff members were thrilled to see the grown up boys and girls and who are now proud parents too. We made it a point to sit in the Class room and shared the experiences and also recollected the past memories. After having a stupendous lunch at Gourmet Basket, which is in the campus itself, we went around the college and recollected the best and better times we spend together in every nook and corner. Really we had the time of our life and it was time to bid-adieu, with the heavy heart we shared goodbyes. May be it just need another five more years for us to be together again. - K. Ganesh (Mem. No. 2173)

Defeat the

Diabetes Diabetes is not a disease; rather it is a defect of organ in the body that affects more intellectuals and productive strata of society. Diabetes mellitus comes slowly without warning and is a progressive disorder, if not treated properly. The main cause is intake of high calorific diet. Regular diet control and exercise can keep the sugar level normal.

absorption as it does not supply as many calories as fat. One gram of protein per kg of body weight is adequate and the amount of fat and carbohydrate should be proportionately reduced. One cup of moderately thick dhal provides 100 kcal of energy and 3-4 gm of protein. Moderate amount of fat is enough for diabetic patients. Excess of fat aggravates the diabetic symptoms and increase the risk of coronary heart diseases. So avoid ghee, butter, saturated oil, margarine, etc. Dietary fibre (complex carbohydrate) is needed as anti-diabetic diet. It reduces postprandial glucose and serum lipids. It is rich in sprouted whole grain, wheat, green leafy vegetables, green vegetables and certain fruits. 100 gm of whole wheat has 9.5 gm of fibre.

Diet modification is needed to keep the sugar under control. For any type of diabetes, needs should be planned carefully. The time and quantity of food as prescribed in the diet sheet must be strictly adopted. The disorder can be prevented by simple formula in diet which is high protein and fibre with low simple carbohydrate and fat. High complex carbohydrate contains more fibre and less sugar hence it is recommended. The main concept of this diet is to prevent immediate symptoms of this disorder. 30 kcal of energy per kg of body weight is needed for thin and optimum body weight individual. 25 kcal is enough for obese diabetic person. About 175-250 gm of carbohydrate can be provided to a diabetic patient. This amount should be decreased in an obese and increased in a thin diabetic patient. Rice can be replaced with two chapattis. Avoid ragi porridge. Cereals are the main source of carbohydrate that provides 100 kcals per 30 gm. A diet with high protein is supplies essential amino acids that are needed for tissue repairs. Protein does not raise the blood sugar during the

Vegetable salad, one cup twice a day is recommended. Green leafy vegetables should be included in daily lunch. Other vegetables should be spared as cup for lunch and dinner. Fruits are rich in carbohydrate and hence they are restricted in quantity to a patient suffering from diabetes. The patient whose sugar level is under control can take any one of the following fruits. One piece of watermelon, three pieces of half ripped guava, one piece of papaya (not fully ripped), ½ cup of pomegranate, etc.

Waatsup ! 1. To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world. 2. No man or woman is worth your tears, and the one who is, won’t make you cry. 3. Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened. Diet rich in omega - 3 fatty acid decrease insulin resistance in people with diabetes. Fish is enough to boost omega-3 level in blood. Besides, flax seed, walnut, fenugreek leaves, broccoli, soya, Tofu (Soya Cheese), etc are also rich in it.

Points to Remember • Follow the diet schedule regularly and diet pattern strictly. • Avoid snacks in between the meal time. • Boiled and steamed dishes are advisable. • Vegetables soup, skimmed milk and curd are low fat products. • One glass of butter milk (200 ml) provides only 15-20 kcals of energy. So drinking butter milk plenty can satisfy the hungry feelings. • Bone soup and boiled egg without yolk are an excellent for diabetic patients. • Chicken can be eaten only twice a month and lean fish once a week. • Reduce the quantity rice and increase the amount of fibrous vegetables. • Avoid sugar, cocoa, cream, aerated beverages, red meat, rooted vegetables, whole milk, and curd, fried foods, fast foods, and certain fruits like mango, banana, jack fruit, fully ripped guava, dates, pine apple, custard apple, etc. • One handful of walnut thrice a week and small fishes for a week may provide essential omega-3 which may reduce high sugar level in the blood. • Raw and cooked onion helps to reduce the sugar level in the blood. • Obese diabetic person requires much bulk with low calories, so it is advised to take a good quantity of vegetables. • Through complex biochemical reaction Green tea helps to metabolise sugar, which is beneficial for both type 1 and 2 diabetes. • Use 200 ml measuring cup. Most of the food should be measured after cooking. • Seasoning and sauté of all foods should be within the fat allowance that advised. • 12 - 13 glasses of water per day is the best. • Avoid beer and whisky. • Regular exercise is also essential. A combination of diet control and regular aerobic exercise such as brisk walking for 30 - 45 mints daily keep the blood sugar under control. • Periodical check up of weight and blood sugar is essential. • To get the best result, keep diabetes under control at least for one year.
