Step inside the Heyward House for a peek into Bluffton’s past /
By Linda LanierFor 170 years, only two families lived in the house at 70 Boundary Street, in what is now known as Old Town Bluffton. The house was built by enslaved people in 1847 for John Cole, a planter who designed it as a summer home for his family.
Cole designed the house after a style popular in the colonial West Indies, built to be more comfortable in the Lowcountry summer. A simple frame house, it has remained mostly unchanged. It was one of only 15 structures still standing in Bluffton after Union troops set fire to the town during the Civil War in 1863. The Heyward family bought the house in 1867, and multiple generations of the family lived there until 1998.
For the past 25 years, the house has been owned by the Bluffton Historical Preservation Society. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Bluffton Historic District.
House tours open the door to a time long past, with original furnishings and period-appropriate clothing, toys, weapons, and 19th- and early 20thcentury artifacts, items such as a spinning wheel, kitchen gadgets, hand-stitched quilts, clocks and baby carriages. Docents are well versed in the history of the era and the place, and they engage visitors in lively presentations.
Bob Drabik, a docent on Monday mornings, wields a Civil War sword with dexterity while explaining the progression from swords to muskets to rifles. He points out a bridal gown and groom’s vest from the 1860s, which are unbelievably small by today’s standards. He shares knowledge of the weight and pay scale of Civil War soldiers and a discussion of 1900s-era table manners. For an educational and fascinating journey into the compelling history of a family and a town, Heyward House is time well spent.
LEARNING FROM EXPERTS
The historic Church of the Cross, on the banks of the May River at the end of Calhoun Street, is open for docent-led tours Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m.2 p.m. Call (843) 757-2661 to schedule a docent.
ONGOING LEGACY
Campbell Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church dates to 1874, when nine former slaves purchased the original building from Bluffton Methodist Church. The building was built in 1853 and can be admired from Boundary Street. Read more about the church’s history on page 12.
The Gullah Way of Life
Preserving Gullah culture and chronicling its history
/ By Linda Lanier Light in the Night , The Slave Dwelling ProjectFor more than 300 years, the Gullah, descendants of slaves, have lived in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Brought against their will from West and Central Africa, they endured hardship and heartbreak. After emancipation, they established new communities on the sea islands of Hilton Head Island, Daufuskie Island, and Saint Helena, along with Bluffton and other small towns on the nearby mainland. Today these families and their ancient culture remain a vibrant thread in the fabric of Bluffton life.
After the Civil War and well into the 20th century, the Gullah community continued to live on islands with no bridges and little contact with the mainland. Fishing, oystering, and farming were the way of life. Much of the Lowcountry’s beloved food culture originated with the Gullah — rice perlo, okra gumbo, shrimp and gravy, all cooked with spices and time-honored African cooking methods.
The rich Gullah creole dialect, a distinctive mixture of English and African languages, is still spoken and written. One of the best-known Gullah expressions, “Kumbaya,” translated “come by here,” found its way into a famous folk song. And Gullah sweetgrass baskets, treasured for their beauty and artistry, are sewn by hand as they were in the 18th century.
Spiritual life remains at the heart of Gullah culture. Small historic praise houses are tucked under majestic oak trees along sandy lanes in the Lowcountry, and the New Testament has been translated into Gullah.
The descendants of formerly enslaved people in South Carolina and North Carolina refer to themselves as Gullah, while the descendants in Georgia and north Florida refer to themselves as Geechee. The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, which was established by Congress in 2006 to recognize this special history and way of life, is a 12,000-square-mile stretch of places that play a prominent role in the centuries-old Gullah Geechee culture.
Several daily educational experiences along with special events encourage learning more about Gullah culture. The Light In The Night event with guest Joseph McGill from The Slave Dwelling Project held at the Heyward House Museum & Welcome Center was part of a larger celebration for Juneteenth.

With each new chapter, Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church chronicles its members’ strength and vision
On a momentous day in February 1874, nine formerly enslaved men recorded the deed transferring the Bluffton Methodist Church to the African Methodist Episcopal Church. These nine men became the original trustees of the newly formed Campbell Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church (A.M.E.).
The church was named for J.P. Campbell, at that time the presiding bishop of the A.M.E. Church. The church, originally constructed by the Methodists in 1853, was one of 15 structures still standing after the “Burning of Bluffton” in 1863 by Union forces during the Civil War. In 2004, a new church building was constructed next door. Today the historic building is beautifully maintained by the congregation.
After purchasing the church and the land for $500, congregation members made changes to the building to make it their own, and Campbell Chapel A.M.E. became
a cornerstone of African-American life in Bluffton. Located in the middle of Old Town Bluffton on Boundary Street, the church served as a center of traditional A.M.E. worship. Sunday hymns, prayers, sermons, and blessings filled the hearts and souls of parishioners. The church also provided a place where congregation members could be educated.
After several years of research, the church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. Much of the history of the church was handed down through oral tradition as records were lost over the decades. Descendants of the original parishioners, who are current members of Campbell Chapel A.M.E., aided historical researchers by sharing stories from their ancestors.
On another momentous day — Oct. 16, 2022 — Bluffton Mayor Lisa Sulka dedicated the Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church Historic Marker. Ceremony attendees included descendants of the first trustees, the
/ By Linda Laniercurrent congregation, and Bluffton neighbors and friends.
“Our town celebrates all the stories of all Bluffton’s residents and how collectively these stories are interwoven into our vibrant tapestry, which collectively tells Bluffton’s full history,” Mayor Sulka said at the ceremony.
On any lovely morning in Old Town Bluffton, take a stroll down Boundary Street and pause in front of the historic, modest Greek Revival church. Imagine an equally beautiful day in 1874 — the sun is shining, the May River is flowing, and a new congregation celebrates a new beginning.

Rollin’ on the River
When someone names his dogs Marsh and River, you know he must be a serious water lover. Those golden retrievers receive more customer requests than any captain at May River Excursions. They belong to Capt. Stephen Shoemaker. He instilled a love of the river into his son, Chris, at an early age.
“Growing up on the river, all I’ve ever done is the trips we offer,” says Capt. Chris Shoemaker, who now owns May River Excursions. He ran the trips for fun when he was 12 with his dad, brother, and friends. “I wanted to have a job I enjoyed, and I love showing people the beauty of the river.”
Trips with May River Excursions can be leisurely, for sightseeing, learning history, and watching sunsets, or they can require some participation, think fishing, shrimping, or crabbing.
“In the summer, families love our crabbing excursion since it’s more interactive and you get to take home dinner,” Capt. Chris says. “In the fall, our shrimping trip is a fan favorite and a great experience to learn how the locals stock their freezers.”
You can also get on the water and explore nature with Outside Palmetto Bluff, which specializes in kayak, paddleboard, and bike rentals. Naturalist guides not only lead the activities, but also explain the Lowcountry surroundings and habitats as you navigate through creeks and waterways. On full-moon nights, book a paddle trip after dark to cruise in the moonlight. Try your hand at standup paddleboarding with an introductory lesson, or go kayak fishing for largemouth bass, which has become one of the fastest growing sports. Outside Palmetto Bluff also offers biking and walking tours.
Whatever trip you choose, soak in your surroundings and enjoy the spontaneity of the river, with sights such as dolphins jumping and maybe even a bald eagle soaring.

Be Well
Rejuvenate your mind and body when you visit Bluffton /
By Leah HughesWhen you vacation in Bluffton, the Lowcountry setting enhances your relaxation. The gentle curves and steady flow of the May River slow you down. Parks tucked alongside streets and riverbanks encourage you to linger outside.
To many people the word exercise means a select set of activities, such as running, cycling, or weight lifting. While those are great exercises, Bluffton’s Fusion Fit expands exercise beyond what’s expected with its Stand and Paddle options, which blend stand-up paddleboarding with fitness moves in a class called Paddle Fused Fitness. All movements are done on a paddleboard on the May River. As you progress through the skills, you not only become a stronger paddler, but also build stability, agility, core strength, and overall fitness. Participants also benefit from exercising outdoors in the sunshine and fresh air while surrounded by nature. Other paddle options include recreational tours and paddleboard lessons.
Fusion Fit also offers adult gymnastics classes that allow participants to learn basic acrobatic skills, such as handstands and cartwheels, or to build strength with apparatuses, such as bars and rings. Additional group exercise class options are available and open to visitors.
If running is your game, Bear Foot Sports invites you to participate in a year’s worth of Lowcountry races. The Polar Bear 5K in January starts the year with a jaunt. The Sunset 5K run and walk kicks off the beloved Shrimp Festival weekend in July. Give back by joining in the Red Shoes Run in November. The 5K race takes place at Rose Hill Plantation, and proceeds benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Fuel up for whatever form of exercise you choose with wholesome juices, smoothies, salads, wraps, and bowls from The Juice Hive.
In addition to a full menu of freshly prepared foods, the shop sells organic and sustainably sourced food products and supplements. The shop specializes in cold-pressed juices, featuring super foods such as kale, beets, and carrots. For a healthy and filling lunch, try a bowlful of noodles, a veggie burger, or a wrap.
Eat Local
Fun, funky, and flavorful — the Bluffton dining scene draws from decades of culinary history, natural river resources, and rich agricultural roots, and blends those traditions with newcomers who bring their own experiences, heritage, and creativity to this small town. Leslie Rohland loves collecting cookbooks. She was going through an old hand-typed Lowcountry cookbook, barely held together with paper clips, when she came up with the latest iteration to round out her shrimp-and-grits trio, dirty shrimp and grits. The recipe, inspired by a Gullah dish, exemplifies what Rohland wants to serve at her restaurant, The Cottage — creative takes on historical recipes that use local ingredients.
The Cottage is a colorful spot with a vibrant patio located in an 1868 cottage on Calhoun Street. On any given day, you’ll find families enjoying a meal together, friends meeting for lunch, and small groups celebrating special occasions around umbrella-clad tables. Four-legged customers have their own doggy menu.
“I think there’s something very true about the phrase, Bluffton state of mind,” Rohland says. “Bluffton has its own energetic space on the planet, and we do things a different way than anyone else.”
Breakfast favorites include crabcake Benedict, challah French toast, and multiple variations on the classic mimosa and bloody mary. Mugs hold locally roasted coffee from sister company May River Coffee Roasters. Lunch customers relish assorted salads and sandwiches, as well as house favorites, such as fried green tomatoes and crab, corn, and bacon pot pie. Customers in the know save room for a slice of coconut cake or pecan pie from the bakery. On Sundays, brunch combines breakfast and lunch favorites plus weekly specials.
Since opening in 2009, The Cottage has won numerous awards, from best brunch and best lunch to best omelet, best dessert,
and best shrimp and grits over and over again.
“The beauty of the recipe is in its simplicity,” Rohland says of her shrimp and grits. “If you’re using quality ingredients, you don’t have to do a whole lot to them.”
Rohland tested the original shrimp-and-grits recipe nine times before settling on a keeper. Her husband served as the taste tester. The pimento cheese version came from a customer. And that latest one, dirty shrimp and grits, includes brisket.
“We are very conscientious about where we live and what we’re fortunate to have here,” Rohland says. “We offer it as a gift to the customers from the people in Bluffton.”
A Sweet Deal
Nectar Farm Kitchen is a beloved part of the Bluffton dining scene |
By Linda LanierAsk anyone in Old Town Bluffton about their favorite restaurant, and Nectar Farm Kitchen is sure to be at the top of the list. Located on Bluffton Road, close to the intersection of May River Road, Nectar is a pleasant walk from the shops and galleries on Calhoun Street and the Promenade, with ample outdoor seating, a friendly bar, and indoor dining.
Nectar is the latest restaurant from SERG Group, which has been an important part of the local food and beverage industry for more than 30 years.
Paul Norris, a partner with SERG Group who oversees the restaurant, is enthusiastic about Nectar’s ability to buy from local farmers, fishermen and women, and dairies.
“Our menu is rich in local ingredients — produce, poultry, shrimp, beef, and rice — imparting the taste of the Lowcountry to all of the delicious food we serve at Nectar Farm Kitchen,” Norris says. “We have some great pairings with our draft beers from our Nectar Brewing Company, which are brewed right upstairs.”
A whimsical bee motif, woven throughout the restaurant in the form of honeycomb light fixtures and coffee mugs sporting the yellow-and-black mascot, acknowledges the pollinator’s vital role in our food supply.
For breakfast and lunch, chicken and waffles is a crowd-pleaser. Any meal that starts with a “bag o’ donuts,” covered in cinnamon sugar and served with seasonal jam, is destined for success. And don’t miss the deviled eggs, which are gussied up versions of this covered-dish staple.
Sea Island Stew, loaded with shrimp, crab, okra, and Carolina Gold rice, is a hearty Lowcountry lunch. Don’t worry if you missed the sweet potato pancakes for breakfast; they’re served all day. One of the most popular dishes on the supper menu is blue crab and grits, which is based on a historical recipe that has been a Lowcountry staple for generations. Root-beerbraised short ribs, served with mashed potatoes and farm vegetables is a fun take on a traditional beef dish that is best enjoyed with either a glass of sweet tea or a robust red from the wine list.
Whether you gather at Nectar for breakfast, lunch, or supper, or simply coffee, a craft beer, or a cocktail, bring a good appetite for a cordial atmosphere.
HandShucked Heritage
Bringing the best of the May River to your table
The block building at the end of Wharf Street is a Bluffton landmark. Home to Bluffton Oyster Company, which has been in business since 1899, the building sits on piles of oyster shells, representing a seafood industry that goes back more than a century. Larry Toomer, along with his wife, Tina, is the third generation to run the family business, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Bluffton Oyster Company is the last hand-shucking oyster house in South Carolina.
The Toomers pride themselves on oysters, shrimp, clams, crabs, mussels, and fish pulled from local waters. They sell the fresh-caught seafood at their market, where customers purchase provisions for oyster roasts and Lowcountry boils.
Just up the street, Bluffton Family Seafood House, the restaurant extension of the business, serves seafood dishes in a casual space with indoor and outdoor seating. Order a draft beer or glass of wine to pair with bowls of she-crab soup and platters of steamed oysters, peel-and-eat shrimp, and blackened fish. Fresh seafood is the star, but friendly service plays a strong supporting act.

Bee-Town Mead & Cider
1230-B May River Road
Opened in 2018, Bee-Town is South Carolina’s first meadery. Mead is an ancient, fermented beverage; it is similar to wine, but mead is made from honey. Participate in a tasting to sample different meads, such as those made from cotton blossom honey and gallberry blossom honey, and infused meads, such as coffee, blueberry, strawberry, and vanilla.
Burnt Church Distillery
120 Bluffton Road
What’s better than small-batch locally crafted spirits? Those that give back to the community in which they’re created. Burnt Church Distillery draws on local folklore to influence the taste of its spirits and in turn weave in Lowcountry lore with each bottle. Visit The Sanctuary tasting room to sample bourbon, gin, whiskey, vodka, and moonshine made into tantalizing cocktails. Pair the libations with a charcuterie board or brick-oven pizza from Pizza Co. next door.
Craft Kitchen
7 Johnston Way
As pleasing to the eye as the palate, this neighborhood gastropub in Old Town Bluffton encourages patrons to gather around craft beverages and scratch-made food. The rotating list of ales, lagers, ciders, and wines includes local selections from around town.
River Dog Brewing Co.
591 Browns Cove Road North
By Leah HughesLed by female head brewer Amelia Keefe, this veteran Lowcountry brewery celebrates more than a decade of delicious drafts. Traditional go-tos include the flagship IPA and Riverwalk Empire pilsner. For something out of the ordinary, try the award-winning Cirque Du Solera, a wood-aged sour. Or for a true taste of community, order a Perkolatte stout brewed with coffee from The Corner Perk Cafe in downtown Bluffton.
lot 9 Brewing Co.
258 Red Cedar Street, Suite 14
lot 9 is a nano-brewery. Its small size allows the brewery to constantly try new things. From hoppy IPAs to malty German lagers, smooth stouts, and mouthpuckering sours, lot 9 prides itself on quality and variety.
Nectar Brewing Company
207 Bluffton Road
Located in a loft space above Nectar Farm Kitchen and visible from the dining room, the newest brewery in Bluffton brews beers to pair with its menu of farm-totable fare. The lineup of food-friendly beers includes five year-round standards and a couple of seasonal selections. The focus is true-to-form ales, such as pales, blondes, and well-balanced IPAs.
Southern Barrel Brewing Co.

Thursdays at the Market
You can tell when it’s Thursday afternoon in Old Town because the Farmers Market of Bluffton is in full swing at Martin Family Park on Boundary Street. A Bluffton tradition for 14 years, the outdoor market, held yearround from noon to 5 p.m., features prepared food; live music; and seasonal produce, eggs, and meat from local farms.
Bluffton residents and visitors arrive early for delectable she-crab soup and crabcakes from Hank’s Lowcountry. Many patrons come every week especially for Great Food Co-op’s homemade chips, and sauces and chutneys based on old, family recipes. Ravioli and fresh pasta sauces of Rio Bertolini are sure to sell out by the end of the day, and aromas of saffron and spices from Fire & Rice paella, prepared in the classic tradition,
float through the air. Sprout Momma bakes beautiful breads, such as apricot walnut and garlic rosemary. For folks whose day is not complete without a confection, Chocolates and Sweets serves an array of handmade truffles.
Farmers load their stands with fresh fruits and vegetables, all locally grown and only available seasonally: satsuma mandarins and Meyer lemons from Franklin’s Citrus Farm; peaches and strawberries from Shuler farms; tomatoes, cucumbers, and greens from Tuten Farms; and poultry and eggs from Fili-West Farms. Island Girl Flower Truck offers “make your own” bouquets, sold from a truck called Buttercup, as colorful reminders of a delightful day.
The busiest person at the Farmers Market of Bluffton is Kim Viljac, executive director and manager.
The weekly farmers market in Bluffton is not only somewhere to shop, but also a meeting place where locals and visitors mingle with farmers and producers / By Linda
LanierThe market is an important part of the Bluffton community; in addition to putting on a weekly market for loyal customers and visitors, Viljac works with area charities and nonprofits to provide produce, grown in the Lowcountry soil and sun, to residents who might not have regular access to fresh, healthy food. The local bus, Bluffton Breeze, serves the market throughout the afternoon.
Take a seat at a picnic table, and savor a barbecue sandwich and a big glass of sweet tea from Calibogue Catering. Viljac invites everyone to spend some time at this award-winning farmers market.
“It’s a place where locals and visitors alike are our community,” she says. “Enjoy a taste of the Lowcountry, live music, and good ole Southern hospitality. See y’all at the market!”

Crowe enjoys being part of the local shopping scene in Bluffton because all of the stores promote each other. “When someone comes in and says, ‘You’re our first stop; where else should we go?’ I get to name all the other cute stores in town.”

Mancini relocated during the pandemic and soon moved her retail operation to Bluffton, as well. “It’s such a small town, but there are so many connections to people from other places,” Mancini says. “And Bluffton has brought us all together.” Although her Bluffton shop is similar to the one she ran in Ohio, she adapted her clothing choices to suit the Lowcountry lifestyle. “You want to look complete from head to toe, but also make it easy and effortless. It might be a hard style to describe, but you know it when you feel it.”

Triple Play
Three distinct courses cultivate legions of repeat golfers looking for classic Lowcountry links
| By Justin JarrettLowcountry golfers in the know are quick to tell you that May River Golf Course — Jack Nicklaus’ challenging layout set in scenic Montage Palmetto Bluff Resort — rivals any course in an area rich with world-class tracks.
Today, May River Golf Course earns high marks thanks to its serene location and demand for skillful play. Palmetto Bluff is a 20,000-acre coastal preserve along the May River that once was home to noted instructor Hank Haney, whose highest-profile student — Tiger Woods — would slip in and out to tune up his game in the low-key setting.
May River’s tricky, elevated greens require precision accuracy — or a great short game — especially when the course is firm and fast. And the conditions are second-to-none, not only in the Lowcountry but anywhere in the Southeast. Salt-tolerant seashore paspalum keeps the tees, fairways, and rough emerald green and allows for irrigation with brackish water to ease environmental impact.
The course is adorned with native plantings that preserve the area’s natural ecosystem. More than 30 massive live oaks were transplanted from other areas of the property to frame the par-72 course that stretches past 7,100 yards from the tips. Beautiful Lowcountry scenery keeps golfers’ minds at ease as they strategize how to best avoid the five acres of sand. The sand features do provide sight lines and a blueprint to navigate the course without finding extra trouble.
May River Golf Course might require the most skill of any layout in Bluffton, but it isn’t the only one. Hilton Head National and Old South Golf Links are among the most enjoyable offerings in the area, and their playability keeps locals and visitors coming back.
Hilton Head National opened Gary Player’s original 18-hole track in 1989 and added a nine-hole Bobby Weed design in 1995. After relinquishing a few holes over the years, the course currently has 18 holes, a combination of Player’s original design and Weed’s additions.
Old South Golf Links is a Lowcountry golf course that often flies under the radar. Designed by noted local architect Clyde Johnston, Old South features incredible coastal scenes along McKay’s Creek and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, and you’re bound to run into some local wildlife while navigating this inventive and intriguing track.
GOLF PARADISE
“Life well lived” is how we describe Montage Palmetto Bluff. And for the avid golfer, the Jack Nicklaus Signature experience at the May River Golf Course is paradise. Take in the majesty of century-old live oaks and serene native landscapes. Woven throughout the May River Forest are 18 holes, 7,171 yards, with a 75.6 rating and 141 slope and several holes bordering the riverbanks. You’ll most remember holes 6, 7, 12 and 14. Or simply to enhance your game, the course offers a world-class practice facility and can arrange time with a pro. Treat yourself to the memory of the May River Golf Course.

LOWCOUNTRY LINKS
Old South Golf Links is the only public course bordering the salt marshes of the Intracoastal Waterway and offers six holes with spectacular water views — especially at high tide. This unique location provides a scenic, challenging and well-maintained golf course that has become highly regarded as a favorite of visitors and locals.
The long list of accolades is the best testament to what makes Old South Golf Links special. Consistently named “Best in Bluffton” and chosen “Lowcountry Golf Course of the Year” by local golf course owners in 2021, Old South is one of only three courses in South Carolina to be GEO Certified.
Be sure to shop the fully stocked Pro Shop or book a lesson with

This course rewards you with Lowcountry golf at its finest, the friendliest staff in town and exceptional value. A great day of golf is waiting!

A JOY TO PLAY
“This course was a joy to play” is the common refrain from golfers finishing their round at Hilton Head National Golf Club. This gem has been heralded for more than 30 years as the best consistently conditioned layout in the Lowcountry. Golf Advisor routinely lists it among the Top 15 courses in South Carolina. Hall of Famer Gary Player and course architecture award winner Bobby Weed used their distinctive design philosophies in ways that make every club in your bag important. But, as golfers will tell you, it’s a course that’s challenging yet not punishing.
The course boasts immaculately groomed TifEagle Ultra greens that run fast and true. The opening holes by Weed offer several strategic risk-reward challenges. The Signature 6th, a par 4, has bordered its entire fairway by a treacherously close lagoon on the right with dangerous pot bunkers on the left. The back nine is tighter and rewards players with a good short game. Most memorable for many, however, is the abundance of wildlife, with no houses in sight.
