very once in a great while, you experience a destination you fall in love with. There’s a reason so many of our guests return time and time again. When you cross the bridge to Hilton Head Island, you leave the world behind and begin to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of this special place. But don’t just take our word for it. There’s a reason we have been named America’s No. 1 Island for four years in a row by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler. In today’s fast-paced world, we all need a place to relax and reconnect with family and friends. We encourage guests to explore the island like a local. Many of our locals were once visitors themselves who discovered the wonders of the island and decided to call it home. Hilton Head Island is known for its beautiful, expansive beaches, but guests are often surprised by the incredible nature and wildlife of our island. There’s no better way to experience the island than by waterway. Enjoy what many have dubbed a “nature walk on water” by kayak or boat. You’ll see bottlenose dolphins, an array of bird species, and miles of oyster beds and Spartina grass. Speaking of oysters, our waterways are pristine, and we locally harvest this beloved Lowcountry cuisine mainstay. You can also enjoy a fresh catch of shrimp and fish caught the day it’s served. We are an island committed to the health and wellness of our guests. Learn more at ThePathForward.org about our plan devoted to Staying Safe Together and ensuring the health of our visitors, residents and businesses. Find more about our destination and start planning your next vacation at HiltonHeadIsland.org. Be sure to engage with Stella the Sea Turtle, who is your own private tour guide as you navigate through our website. We are America’s Favorite Island® and you will discover why on an unforgettable getaway to our destination.

1

PLAY ON THE BEACH Because of the island’s unique location, deep on the inner curve of the East Coast, its 12 miles of beaches are among the widest, flattest beaches in the country. Low wind and wave energy means the water is calm and tide pools are abundant. Translation? It’s easy to find a spot in the sand that’s all yours. For more beach info, turn to p. 38. BREATHE IN THE FRESH AIR Beyond the beach, there are plenty of other ways to play outside. Rent a kayak and paddle the island’s waterways (and keep your eyes peeled for dolphins). Turn to p. 36 for more outdoor fun.

2

SLEEP WELL Whether you want a cozy villa tucked along a tree-lined path or an oceanfront home with a private pool, the comforts of home are never out of reach. Find the right vacation rental or resort for you on p. 64.

BRING THE WHOLE FAMILY Fido, included! Pets are welcome in many of the island’s rental homes, on restaurant patios and beaches. For details, visit HiltonHeadIsland.org/ our-island/pet-friendly, or turn to p. 142 to see furry friends living their best #LowcountryLife.

7

EAT OUTSIDE Many area restaurants offer spacious outdoor dining options, which means you’re never too far from that coastal breeze and a warm sunset. Read more on p. 76.

5

3

GOLF LIKE A PRO The island is home to some of the country’s top courses. In April, the pros gather here for the PGA TOUR's RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing tournament, held at The Sea Pines Resort's iconic Harbour Town Golf Links. Read more on p. 101.

EXPLORE SOMEWHERE NEW A few minutes over the bridge, the small town of Bluffton awaits. Spend the morning in Old Town and be charmed by its picture-perfect downtown. Or, take a ferry over to Daufuskie Island, a sparsely populated barrier island with a true sense of place. Read more on p. 52 and p. 60.

8

SOAK UP THAT VITAMIN D Hilton Head Island enjoys a mild, sub-tropical climate all year long. A trip to the island in March or November is just as enjoyable as a June or July visit.

9

BIKE EVERYWHERE Named a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the American League of Bicyclists, Hilton Head Island has more than 60 miles of leisure pathways. Pedal down paths draped with Spanish moss, winding past golf courses or even bike on the beach (the hard-packed sand at low tide makes it a breeze!). Find your favorite trail on p. 41 and a list of rental outfitters on p. 145.

DON’T STRESS This is your chance to relax and rejuvenate. Sit back, close your eyes and indulge in a suite of treatments designed to stimulate all your senses. Explore the island’s options on p. 150.

aptain William Hilton, the first Englishman to step foot on the island that he later named Hilton Head Island, recorded in his ship’s diary in 1663: “The air is clean and sweet, the country very pleasant and delightful.” Charles Fraser, the forward-thinking developer and planner who came to the island almost three hundred years later, paid homage to this early explorer by establishing the highest land-planning standards to keep this lush sea island clean and vibrant for the thousands of residents and visitors who enjoy it every year. The guiding principle of the Hilton Head Island land-use formula, which was reverence and maintenance for the natural environment, was considered unconventional and progressive when Sea Pines, Hilton Head Island’s first planned community, was imagined by Fraser in the early 1950s. A Yale law student from Hinesville, Georgia, Fraser was a member of the family that held an interest on thenundeveloped Hilton Head Island. He recognized the stunning, abundant beauty of the large, unspoiled island, and he traveled the world with architects and planners to discover the best use for this land. Harbour Town, the iconic Sea Pines enclave with gleaming yachts, pastelcolored villas, cobbled courtyards and its candy-cane striped lighthouse, was inspired by Fraser’s visits to the ancient Portofino harbor on the Italian Riviera. It was given the name Harbour Town to evoke the charming spirit of sunny European harbor towns. And thus Sea Pines — with miles of oceanfront, majestic mossy oaks and woodland

Its championship golf courses, hotels, homes and villas, designed and created under the guidance of Fraser and those who came after him, established the island as a premier residential community and resort destination. This Hilton Head Island design aesthetic has stood the test of time, and that legacy lives on today. Wetlands are protected, and beaches and waterways are maintained in pristine condition.

Earth tones and natural building materials prevail, and strict architectural standards are in harmony with the natural habitat. Sea birds nest as they did a millennia ago, while deer and foxes and other Lowcountry creatures still wander the forest. Dolphins, shrimp and blue crabs fill the waters. Nature has been good to Hilton Head Island. Fraser’s vision and dedication have honored these natural gifts and set in motion a way of life that continues today. — Linda Lanier

or more than 300 years, the Gullah, descendants of slaves, have lived in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Brought against their will from West and Central Africa, they endured hardship and heartbreak. After emancipation, they made a new home on the Daufuskie and Saint Helena sea islands. These native islanders and their ancient culture remain a vibrant thread in the fabric of Hilton Head Island life.

After the Civil War and well into the 20th century, the Gullah community continued to live in relative isolation on islands with no bridges and little contact with the mainland. Fishing, oystering and farming were the way of life. Much of the Lowcountry’s beloved food culture originated with the Gullah — rice purlo, okra gumbo, shrimp and gravy, cooked with spices and time-honored African cooking methods. The rich Gullah creole dialect, a distinctive mixture Connect of English and African with Gullah culture and history languages, is still spoken during the annual and written. One of Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration the best-known Gullah held each February. expressions, “Kumbaya,” translated “come by here,” found its way into a famous folk song. And Gullah sweetgrass baskets, treasured for their beauty and artistry, are sewn by hand today as they were in the 18th century. Spiritual life remains at the heart of Gullah culture. Small historic praise houses are tucked under majestic oak trees along sandy lanes on the Lowcountry sea islands, and the New Testament has been Gullah storyteller and singer Anita Singletontranslated into Gullah. Historic Mitchelville, located on Hilton Head Island’s Port Royal Sound, was America’s first self-governed town of freed slaves. Established in 1862 by General Ormsby Mitchel, the commander of the Union forces that occupied Hilton Head Island, the town was built by and for formerly enslaved people who were granted their freedom, prior to the Emancipation Proclamation, in the Port Royal Experiment. Gullah people, direct descendants of Mitchelville, continue to tell their story through the Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park and the Mitchelville Preservation Project. Other ways to explore the culture include the Gullah Heritage Trail Tours, the Gullah Museum and The Heritage Library. Local experts on Gullah culture lead a Daufuskie Island tour. The Penn Center, on Saint Helena Island, includes a museum that chronicles the Gullah heritage through the centuries. The Town of Hilton Head Island has placed signage to mark entry into 12 historic Gullah neighborhoods, not only to bring awareness of the Gullah way of life in the Lowcountry but also to assist in preserving the rich past and importance of this centuries old culture.

This Daufuskie Island Gullah home is painted “haint” blue to ward off evil spirits.

H

ilton Head Island, awardwinning for its inviting beaches, topflight recreation and premier resorts, also holds the outstanding designation as one of the country’s first resort destinations to account for preservation of the natural environment in its master design plan. Moreover, it’s one of the country’s few municipalities to be named as an Audubon International Certified Sustainable Community. As a guiding principle of development, the town government, developers and planners are dedicated to the guardianship of all natural resources — water, land and wildlife. Amid Hilton Head Island’s sand dunes,

freshwater wetlands, salt marshes and maritime forests, some of the resident wildlife includes bottlenose dolphins, alligators, loggerhead sea turtles and a rich variety of more than 220 species of birds. You’ll spot manatees in the summer and bald eagles in the winter, and you’re likely to see white-tailed deer, egrets and sea otters. Bird watchers come to Hilton Head Island just to catch a glimpse of the neotropical migrant birds known as painted buntings. Other migratory birds, such as the endangered red knots, use the island as a stopping point along their journey. Callawassie Island, a nearby Lowcountry river island with hundreds

24 • 20 21 OFFI CI A L VACAT IO N P L A N N E R

of Backyard Wildlife Habitats, was the first Certified Wildlife Habitat Community in the state. Great egrets and great blue herons abound, and bald eagles have nested on Callawassie for many years. “It is so good that we can develop an area and still have these species that are not only an inspiration and a great sight, but also play a role in the environment,” says Carlos Chacon, manager of natural history at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. The island’s successful management of loggerhead sea turtle nesting season has led to loggerheads nesting in record numbers in recent years — in fact, 2019 saw 463 nests, the highest number of sea turtle nests in the island’s history.

MAKE THE PROMISE Visitors continue to play a role in the destination’s sustainability and conservation efforts. For more information and to make the promise, visit HiltonHeadIsland.org/promise.

Enjoy the beach and leave behind nothing but your footprints. Conveniently placed trash receptacles help keep the beach clean.

Dawn Brut, the museum’s curator of education, encourages everyone to be aware of the nesting season. To help hatchlings along their journey “home” to the ocean, follow the Turtle Tips listed on the next page. Charles Fraser, the island’s original resort developer, had a vision of establishing Hilton Head Island as an exceptional resort community while maintaining the natural beauty of the Lowcountry surroundings. Since the development of The Sea Pines Resort, his vision has been preserved over the past five decades. Thanks to that foresight, visitors today and in the future can experience this unique island that marries development and conservation.

Make it easier for sea turtles and their hatchlings to navigate the shoreline by flattening your sand castles and filling in any holes you dug when you’re done with your day at the beach.

Many of the island’s native animals are active at dusk, dawn and nighttime. If you spot wildlife in the roadway, slow down, blink your lights several times and beep your horn.

Please stay on the path. Walking on our beautiful sand dunes can damage or destroy the sea oats and other flora keeping our dunes from washing away. Finding sand dollars, starfish, hermit crabs and other sea life along the shore is exciting. Enjoy discovering them and please leave these coastal creatures undisturbed in their natural habitat.

WORLD-CLASS GOLF

18th Hole at Harbour Town Golf Links

15th Hole at Atlantic Dunes by Davis Love III

Three incredible courses, each with its own character, offer players challenges and thrills. Play one or play the trifecta for an unparalleled golf experience. As home of the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing, Harbour Town Golf Links is the crown jewel of Sea Pines golf. The Pete Dye design begs players to use their imagination and finesse. A PGA TOUR pro favorite, it has some of the best par threes found on any course worldwide and a humbling par-four 18th hole. Heron Point by Pete Dye is a striking mixture of beauty and challenge, and a perfect complement to Harbour Town. This can’t-miss track was previously named South Carolina Golf Course of the Year. The 18th hole is pure drama — a bunker shot that runs along the water. Atlantic Dunes by Davis Love III is the epitome of coastal golf, and was previously named Golf Course of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association. The spectacular 15th hole overlooking the Atlantic is one of only two oceanfront holes on Hilton Head Island. Showcasing these top-ranked courses is the Lighthouse Invitational, an exciting team event with competition for men and women amateurs. The Golf Learning Center specializes in tailored instruction, from club fittings to the mental game. The Harbour Town Clubhouse welcomes golfers with its elegant lounge areas, signature pro shop, upscale dining at Links, an American Grill and other world-class amenities and services. Legendary golf here can be yours with one of the Resort’s golf packages; the Ultimate Buddy Trip includes play at one or all three courses, plus extras like a private cruise or dinner. seapines.com/golf • 843.842.8484 F d seapinesresort

he island received the Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community designation by the League of American Bicyclists, and with 60 miles of dedicated leisure pathways and hard-packed sand beaches, spending time on two wheels is a breeze. Here are just a couple of the scenic routes you can take.

“Folly” is a point on the beach that may not be passable at high tide on foot or by bike.

BEACH RIDES AT LOW TIDE For salty breezes Start at Coligny Beach Park, get on the beach, turn left and ride on the beach towards the north end of the island. A good spot to turn around is just before the “folly” at Burkes Beach, about five miles up the beach. Enjoy the wind on your face and the sounds of the breaking waves — memories that will stay with you long after you’ve returned home.

here may be no better way to experience the Lowcountry’s gentle allure than with a leisurely stroll down Bluffton’s centuries-old streets. Stately oaks dripping with lacy Spanish moss line the one square mile of Old Town Bluffton, where boutiques, restaurants and galleries stand side by side with demure cottages and genteel homes, many dating to the early 1800s. If a slow walk through a small Southern town is your idea of time well spent, join the Bluffton Walking Tour, which begins at the Heyward House Historic Center, an 1840s farmhouseturned-museum that doubles as the town’s welcome center. Docent Anne Heyward is a native Blufftonian who regularly guides history and architecture buffs on walking tours through her hometown.

Ambling along under the shade of lustrous palmettos, Heyward transports her visitors back to her town’s beginnings in the early 1800s. Bluffton was a tiny village lounging on the banks of the May River, founded by folks eager to enjoy the breezes and escape the Lowcountry summer heat. Of Bluffton’s 60 homes, churches and businesses, just 15 remained after Union forces razed the town in 1863. HILTO NHE AD I SLAN D.ORG •

Campbell Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church

Thankfully, all of the town’s residents escaped before the Union gunboats headed up the river. After the dust settled, eight antebellum homes and two churches stood unharmed: The Church of the Cross (ca. 1857) and the Campbell Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, built in 1853. Take a moment to enjoy a sweeping river view from the imposing HugerGordon House, one of Bluffton’s oldest homes, today a private residence. A section of the house dates back to 1795, and scars around the front door are permanent reminders of the fusillade from Civil War minié balls. Heyward’s walking tour continues down Bridge Street to the three-story 1830s Fripp House, with its stately porch and white fence. Next stop, the Card House, where legend has it that

the house changed hands in an 1840s high-stakes poker game. “Losing houses in poker games is a long-standing Southern tradition,” laughs Heyward. Meandering down Calhoun Street, it’s easy to imagine folks sipping sweet tea in rocking chairs on the Seven Oaks verandah. (Not a bad way to spend a day in 2021, either.) Nearby in another Calhoun Street cottage, the Society of Bluffton Artists (SOBA) gallery displays the paintings, sculpture, mixed media and photography of more than 100 local artists. Take time to linger over the beautiful landscape paintings, which grace many Lowcountry residences. Next up, Heyward points out the double-chimneyed Seabrook House, a quintessential Lowcountry home

designed to catch the breezes. Built in 1840, this private residence reflects the meticulous care of Bluffton homeowners who’ve poured their hearts into diligent maintenance and restoration. The restored Garvin-Garvey House, a small Freedman-owned cottage built during Reconstruction, is maintained by the Beaufort County Land Trust and the Town of Bluffton. From its perch on the High Bluff at the 120 year old Bluffton Oyster Factory, the house is open to the public. These docent-led tours are a history lover’s delight. Bluffton’s wide porches, white fences and well-kept gardens punctuate a town deep in the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry, enriched with an enduring sense of place.

Stock up on local produce and enjoy prepared foods and entertainment at the Farmers Market of Bluffton (every Thursday 12 – 5 p.m.).

The first and sometimes primary flavor. A fully saline oyster can be described as briny. An oyster with minimal salinity can taste flat, sweet or almost buttery. 1. Salinity

2. Texture

An oyster’s texture should be soft and fleshy, crisp on the palate.

The last flavors you'll commonly experience after tasting an oyster include mineral, metallic, melon, cucumber and earthy hints. 3. Finish

he first step off the ferry onto Daufuskie Island is a step back in time. Daufuskie is five miles long by two miles wide, roughly one-sixth the size of Hilton Head Island. Time seems to move slower here — a good thing if you’ve come for a day trip; there’s lots to explore before taking the boat back across Calibogue Sound. Rustic, beautiful and somewhat otherworldly, most of Daufuskie Island has remained virtually undisturbed for decades. Cars are restricted and there is a tiny grocery store. Native American artifacts, including arrowheads and pieces of centuries-old pottery, are frequently unearthed on the island’s beaches. Daufuskie Island is also home to the private Haig Point community, which offers top-notch amenities for its few hundred residents.

Eat and drink at the Old Daufuskie Crab Company, dance the day away to live music, play cornhole, explore Freeport and enjoy the serene public beach that looks across Calibogue Sound toward Hilton Head Island. Near the marina, a general store, a few cottages for rent and a handful of shops including Wine & Woodworks is a quirky combination that captures the essence of the island. This sleepy isle boasts the Silver Dew Winery and the Daufuskie Island Rum Company.

Eclectic and colorful art is prized across the island. LEGEND HAS IT According to local lore, the 1873 Haig Point Lighthouse, overlooking Calibogue Sound, is haunted by Maggie Comer, a friendly ghost whose father was the first lighthouse keeper. Disappointed in love, Maggie died of a broken heart more than 100 years ago. To this day, guests report whispers in the night, flickering lights and ghostly footsteps. But don’t let that keep you from visiting the lighthouse — brave types can even spend the night in one of two bedrooms.

ANDY BORGMEIER, EXECUTIVE CHEF OF SIGNATURE CATERING & EVENTS SERG TAKEOUT KITCHEN

A

professional chef trained at Johnson & Wales — with New York City restaurants on his resume — Andy Borgmeier realized his dream of living on Hilton Head Island and overseeing the kitchen of one of the most successful restaurant groups in the region. “Our customers want the ease of restaurant-quality dining at home, whether they are visitors or islanders,” says Borgmeier. With the SERG Takeout Kitchen, guests can pick up delicious, chef-made food for intimate dinners or multi-course meals for a larger family or group. Even quick lunch sandwiches and pizza are on the menu, along with luscious desserts and ice cream. Borgmeier cooks Lowcountry favorites, such as crab cakes with remoulade sauce, barbecue ribs and the original comfort food — fried chicken with mac and cheese. Pork schnitzel with spaetzle or Grandma’s meatloaf with mashed potatoes are hot and ready for pick-up any time. A full hot meal menu along with fresh salads are also available from lunch to dinner as well as daily hot meal features. Planning ahead for weekly dinners is easy with the fresh frozen entrees, such as Italian meatballs and Yankee pot roast. And portions are available from roasted turkey and beef stroganoff for one, to lasagna for eight. A growing number of guests want to be able to pick up first-rate, scratch-made food, says Borgmeier. “At the SERG Takeout Kitchen, our staff works hard to make sure that our customers get the best at-home dining experience.” The Takeout Kitchen is a great complement to Signature Catering & Events by SERG — a full-service catering company that offers flowers, decor, dining and entertainment for a range of events, from small home parties to extravagant receptions.

BRIDGETTE FRAZIER, CHEF B EATZ FOOD TRUCK AND DELICIOUSLY COUTURE CATERING

B

ridgette Frazier, a Bluffton native, learned to cook in her grandmother, Daisy Frazier’s kitchen. After teaching school for 15 years, she realized her calling in cooking for others and opened Chef B Eatz Food Truck and Deliciously Couture. A Gullah connoisseur, Frazier’s grandmother taught her how to prepare authentic Gullah dishes like red rice, gumbo, cornbread and crab cakes. Her father, Oscar Frazier, the owner of a Bluffton barbecue joint, Oscar’s BBQ, taught her the art of barbeque. She attended Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Florida and expanded her knowledge of techniques and cooking styles. Today, Frazier offers her customers beef bourguignon and beef tenderloin alongside regional favorites like shrimp and grits and peach cobbler.

Frazier’s red rice, an authentic Gullah dish of rice, tomatoes, onions, peppers and spices — with a little pork added — is one of her signature dishes. Most people are familiar with gumbo, but her Gullah version combines okra, tomatoes and spices for a distinctive flavor. With so much plentiful seafood in the area, Frazier uses fresh-off-the-boat crab in her Deviled Crab, based on an old family recipe. She serves gumbo fries topped with fried local shrimp and incorporates fresh local shrimp in hibachi bowls with fried rice, teriyaki chicken and yummy sauce. And she uses local oysters in rice perlou — “or perloo, as some people call it,” she says. “Even when times are challenging, we can adapt. People always want good food!” HILTO NHE AD I SLAN D.ORG •

ynn Michelle (known locally as Chef Lynn) is a firm believer that food brings people together. Her experiences of living and cooking abroad, owning cafes and working as an executive chef at several inns and restaurants led to her true calling as a personal chef. “Our clients want a first-rate dining experience at home while on Hilton Head Island,” she says. “They’re visiting with their family and friends, and they want to relax and enjoy their time together — and they love not having to cook!” New visitors to the island often want to try Southerninspired food such as shrimp and grits and crab dishes that they can’t get elsewhere. “Many of our clients visit every year and always request their favorites,” Chef Lynn says. “If visitors have dietary restrictions, we’ll adapt our recipes for vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets. We even offer a vegan Lowcountry Boil!” As a personal chef, Chef Lynn arrives with fresh ingredients, usually purchased that day, and prepares

everything on site. She and her staff are happy to give demonstrations, answer questions, and adapt recipes to suit personal tastes. “Children often join in the cooking experience, whether that’s helping with the meal or setting up a separate station to make and decorate cookies,” she says. Chef Lynn and her team are also happy to prepare their famous sweet potato biscuits or casseroles that can be kept in the freezer and served for dinners during the week. “There is such a close community feeling on Hilton Head Island, and through sharing food, we can celebrate that sense of connectedness. Together, we can keep everyone safe and happy.”

Italy Meets Lowcountry The elegant simplicity of southern Italian cuisine meets Lowcountry hospitality at Nunzio Restaurant + Bar. Chef and owner Nunzio Patruno hails from Puglia, on Italy’s Adriatic coast; his creative flair and embrace of quality and the regional bounty shines throughout the menu. “The simplicity of Italian food comes from letting ingredients and flavors stand out,” says Chef Nunzio. “In the Lowcountry, there’s lots of pride in local ingredients and how they’re prepared.” Traditional Italian dishes and desserts make use of what’s in season. The antipasti stand out, from the delicate grilled Spanish octopus with Sardinian farro to Polpette di Nonna Angelina — grandma’s Pugliese style meatballs floating in tomato sauce. One constant is wine, for what is Italian food without it? Nunzio’s impressive wine cellar represents Italy and other winemaking regions around the world. A warm, casual atmosphere prevails, from the bar and daily happy hour to early dining offerings. ike fingerprints and snowflakes, golf destinations are unique. Some bustle with energy, others move like a slow afternoon in a hammock. Then there is Hilton Head Island, where golf and a sense of place come together to create a moss-draped tapestry that brings together the best the game offers — beautiful and beguiling courses that cater to players of all skill levels for a day, a week or a lifetime. Whether it’s an iron shot over a lagoon or a tee shot threaded between parallel canopies of live oaks, golf on Hilton Head Island brings together the game’s most endearing elements in a setting like few others. Golf on and around Hilton Head Island comes with a built-in vibe, a Lowcountry rhythm that practically pulses through the salt-scented air, whether it’s at the world famous (and justifiably so) Harbour Town Golf Links, at one of the three courses at the Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort or any of the other 19 nearby courses. The golf world tunes in every April

when the PGA TOUR’s RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing is played at Harbour Town, and the game’s best players come not just for the tournament but for the feeling that comes with being on Hilton Head Island. The red-and-white striped Harbour Town lighthouse has become an instantly recognizable iconic symbol to golf fans around the world who are acquainted with Hilton Head Island through television coverage over nearly 50 years. Many participants look forward to the respite of Hilton Head Island’s RBC Heritage after the bustle of the Masters. The island is a low-key destinantion for golfers who like to bring their families for some together time. “There are so many things that make this a special place,” says Davis Love III, a five-time winner at Harbour Town.

Depending on what you want from a golf perspective, the Hilton Head Island area offers it. No two courses are alike and no two communities are the same.

A Joy to Play

3rd, 6th, 13th and 14th holes

“This course was a joy to play” is the common refrain from golfers finishing their round at Hilton Head National Golf Club. Located a mile west of the island bridges, this gem has been heralded for more than 30 years as the best consistenly conditioned layout in the Lowcountry. Golf Advisor routinely lists it among the Top 15 courses in South Carolina. Hall of Famer Gary Player and course architecture award winner Bobby Weed used their distinctive design philosophies in ways that make every club in your bag important. But, as golfers will tell you, it’s a course that’s challenging yet not punishing. The course boasts immaculately groomed TifEagle Ultra greens that run fast and true. The opening holes by Weed offer several strategic risk-reward challenges. The Signature 6th, a par 4, has bordered its entire fairway by a treacherously close lagoon on the right with dangerous pot bunkers on the left. The back nine is tighter and rewards players with a good short game. Most memorable for many, however, is the abundance of wildlife, with no houses in sight. hiltonheadnational.com • 843.842.5900 F hiltonheadnational HILTO NHE AD I SLAN D.ORG •

S TA N S M I T H : SOME PEOPLE THINK I’M A SHOE Local legend Stan Smith has two claims to fame: his iconic sneaker, and his status as former world champion. Get the full story in this coffee table book, available at the Sea Pines Racquet Club.

Photo of shoe courtesy of Adidas; archival photo courtesy of Stan Smith

ong before his iconic white and green Adidas hit the scene, Stan Smith was famous for his serve. That some only know him for his shoe — worn by celebs from Pharrell Williams to Gisele Bündchen — instead of his tennis career is just fine with the Grand Slam-winning legend. In fact, he even wrote a book about it, Some People Think I’m a Shoe. Smith is proud to call Hilton Head Island home. “We are known for world-class tennis,” says Smith, a former world No. 1 player and Wimbledon champion. Smith has a lot to do with the island’s reputation for the game. When island developer Charles Fraser hired Smith as the touring pro for The Sea Pines Resort in the 70s, the two soon hopped on a plane to Paris. Fraser had a vision for island tennis that was more park-like and green. Smith had practiced at the famed Racing Club de France and the design of the island’s tennis courts were inspired by those of Paris. Hilton Head Island’s reputation for tennis is part of its DNA. The island is even shaped like the profile of a tennis shoe — Smith couldn’t have planned it better. Today, the area is home to more than 300 courts, plus tennis academies and clinics for all ages and skill levels, taught by some of the best instructors in the game. Hilton Head Island is the ideal place to take your game to the next level.

PICKLEBALL, A N YO N E ? Learn to play the country’s fastest-growing sport.

T

his lively game — with the equally fun name — combines tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It’s a slower-paced game than tennis, with an underhand serve, played on a smaller court. Pickleball is perfect for all ages. At Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, nationally ranked tennis Palmetto and pickleball player Sarah Ansboury leads clinics and academies. Dunes Oceanfront Resort named Palmetto Dunes’ director of tennis and pickleball John Kerr says “Pickleball Resort of learning the sport with Sarah is the perfect complement to a the Year” by Racquet Sports Industry family vacation. Magazine “The learning curve is short, so people catch on really fast,” says Kerr. “Many families today are traveling with multiple generations, and pickleball puts grandparents and grandchildren on a level playing field.”

WHAT IS IT? Pickleball was invented in 1965 in Washington, D.C., by a congressman whose dog, Pickles, liked to run away with tennis balls during games. Pickleball is played on a 20 x 44 foot court— much smaller than a tennis court. In fact, four pickleball courts can fit in one tennis court. WHAT DO YOU NEED? Instead of tennis racquets, pickleball uses paddles that are lightweight and easy to swing. The ball is also different from a tennis ball. It’s plastic, perforated and about the size of a softball. A pickleball moves about one-third the speed of a tennis ball. HOW DO YOU PLAY? Pickleball serves are underhand and travel diagonally cross-court. Like tennis, the ball must bounce once after the serve before it can be returned. When you score a point, you continue to serve. Games go to 11 points and must be won by two points.

f you’ve ever found yourself at the end of your vacation on Hilton Head Island, full of dread at the thought of leaving, you’re not alone. In fact, it’s this very thing that has turned some island visitors into island residents. “People want open space, a backyard, the ability to go outside,” says Cindy Creamer, a realtor with Dunes Real Estate. “They want to go to the beach!” Two of Creamer’s recent clients were lifelong visitors who decided to establish a deeper connection to Hilton Head Island. Dan O’Neal, from Dallas, Texas, first visited the island in the 1970s when his parents had a condo in Sea Pines. He started vacationing here again a few years ago and rediscovered his love for the area. During 2020, O’Neal decided to relocate to Hilton Head Island and continue to run his businesses from afar. “I ended Dan O’Neal with up staying granddaughter here for six months,” he recalls. “I decided this was the place where I wanted to retire. I love spending the majority of my time here. My fiancé, Kirsten, comes to visit every other week. I considered retiring to Colorado, California or Northern Michigan, but

Hilton Head Island is a place that has everything. I can go to the beach, ride my bike, and get on my boat all in the same day. You can even throw a round of golf into that mix.” Matt and Remy Kenney, from Louisville, Kentucky, also were lifelong visitors who are in the process of building their dream home on the island. Remy’s family had been visiting Hilton Head Island since she was eight years old. Growing up with fond memories of her time here, she and Matt began looking for a second home to rent out and use occasionally for their young family. “As we kept going down to Hilton Head Island, we fell in love with the area,” says Matt. “We love the Lowcountry in general, and were drawn to Hilton Head Island.” Matt’s job allows him to work anywhere, and with two young daughters who haven’t started elementary school yet, they decided 2020 was the perfect time to make a move. “Our kids love the beach,” says Matt. “There’s so much more for them to do

here. We can hop on a paddleboard on Broad Creek five minutes away from our house. We can fish on the beach. The outdoor activities are the most appealing to us about Lowcountry life. We can spend the entire Matt and Remy Kenney day on with their daughters the beach without the girls asking for their iPads. There’s so much more for us to do as a family here.” O’Neal has enjoyed settling into his new Lowcountry lifestyle, too. His favorite local spots include the Sea Pines Beach Club, Nunzio’s Restaurant + Bar and Links, an American Grill. Biking the island’s pathways and exploring Islander’s Beach are his favorite pastimes. You can’t compare the hustle and bustle of Dallas with the relaxation and chill of the island. My heart rate drops 10 beats whenever I cross that bridge.”
