From the Editor Hello everybody, Welcome to the March-May 2017 issue and the 11th Year of The Eye Malawi. Given the ON-GOING power problems, still pulled it off, a few days late, but not bad, thanks team! The lead this issue is from a known contributor Dr Alison Leslie & Charli de Vos from Majete Wildlife Research Program who together with African Parks delivers a study on the Plains Zebra in Majete. Due to diligent conservation efforts they have been able to translocate some of these Zebra (among other animals) to other less fortunate parks. Big up guys! Max Del Buffalo, of Jambo Africa and Nyala lodge brings us an article of pioneering stature on a solar water project happening in Lower Shire. Brilliant effort. We have a write up from Bat Lady Emma Stone on Bat conservation & Susan Waldron brings us the lovelylisicious intestinal worms, one of

6

those things, TIA and we squeezed yet another armylisicious wormy art` in as well. Lieza Swennen of the LSPCA brings us their new campaign based on the 5 animal freedoms. Their dedication & passion must be noted, help where you can people. We also have an update from Yolande Kruger (Be Bold Consulting) and their efforts raising awareness for elephant conservation. Huge hugs, kisses & thanks to all!!! Massive thanks to all advertisers, without whom this publication would not be possible. It’s that time for….. Drum roll… I`m combining Easter and April fool’s Day this year, I’m sending the kids out to look for eggs I haven’t hidden & We celebrate Jesus brutally dying on the cross by getting a giant bunny rabbit to hide chocolate eggs...I can’t help but feel there is a massive gap in information somewhere! Happy Easter holidays all. Stay safe.

By Charli de Vos & Dr. Alison Lesley

Majete Wildlife Reserve, located in the Lower Shire Valley, has become one of the most iconic reserves of Malawi and currently holds the status of being the only big five reserve in the country. This makes it almost impossible to believe that only 13 years ago the majority of the large mammals found in the reserve today were completely eradicated from the area, due primarily to high levels of poaching and an associated lack of law enforcement. This however all changed, when in 2003 African Parks, together with the Malawian government’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW), entered into a public-private partnership, through which they aimed to rehabilitate the reserve. Soon thereafter, over 2550 individuals of 14

8

different mammal species were reintroduced and this marked the beginning of Majete’s revival. Majete’s dream has finally been realised – by providing 450 excess animals (including waterbuck, sable, kudu, eland and zebra) to Liwonde National Park and Nhkotakota Game Reserve in July of 2016 with the help of Tracy & Du Plessis Game Capture and Conservation Solutions from South A f r i c a . This translocation project also included t h e

translocation of 250 elephants from Liwonde National Park to Nhkotakota Reserve and the 2017 planned translocation of a combined total of 250 more elephants from Majete Wildlife Reserve and Liwonde National Park to Nhkotakota Game Reserve, making it one of the largest wildlife translocations projects in Africa to date. One of the most remarkable and lesser known transformation stories of Majete, is that of the plains zebra (Equus quagga). Prior to the rehabilitation of Majete, zebras were completely eradicated from the reserve by 1985. Between 2004 and 2009, 174 plains zebra were reintroduced to Majete and after conducting an aerial survey in September 2015, it was estimated that the current zebra population in the reserve, stands at approximately 571 individuals. This outstanding increase in zebra numbers is a shining example of how successful conservation and management efforts, combined with research and community involvement can enhance the persistence of wildlife.

However, the future for zebra elsewhere in Malawi is not looking as bright. In all the other protected areas in Malawi, zebras have experienced population declines. In Nyika National Park zebra numbers declined from 279 to 153 individuals between 2013 and 2015, and in 2015, Liwonde National Park, Kasungu National Park and Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve had less than 20 zebras each. Majete’s zebra could therefore be a core population for the species in the rest of Malawi and in July 2016, 25 zebra were translocated from Majete Wildlife Reserve to Liwonde National Park to supplement their small population. This marked a big step towards the conservation of zebras in Malawi, since their range has decreased drastically due to overhunting and habitat degradation as a result of increasing human development and livestock conflict. Even though zebras have been successfully reintroduced and established in Majete – thanks to their remarkable ability to recover when provided with suitable habitat and protection from overhunting – it is extremely important to investigate and monitor the period post re-introduction, as population dynamics, distribution and behaviour may show discrepancies as species adapt and establish themselves in their new environment. In order to insure that management and conservation agencies continue to advance the long-term persistence of the plains zebra in Majete and to predict how they will respond to future human-induced changes, Charli de Vos, a master’s student from the University of Stellenbosch and a member of the Majete Wildlife Research Programme, is currently conducting a study on the ecology of the plains zebra.

dense forests and permanent wetlands are avoided. Unlike other African savanna antelope and ruminants which also graze purely on grass, the plains zebra makes use of a hind-gut digestive system which enables them to digest their food at a comparatively faster rate. Thus allowing them to graze on coarse vegetation of low nutritional value, which is unsustainable for similar sized ruminants. The ability to thrive on a lower quality forage has enabled the plains zebra

Plains zebra are generally characterized as a wild African equid with distinct black and white stripes. They have a highly social nature and previous studies have reported a two-tiered social organization for the species. Firstly, the band – consisting of a single stallion and one to six mares and their foals, form the core social group. Bands are generally stable, consisting of the same adult members for months to years. It is the responsibility of the band stallions to defend all the members of their harem and

Cont. on page 12

a male tenure can last up to 10 years. Older stallions, which may have lost their harems to a rival male and/or a young male which may have recently dispersed from it’s natal harem, aggregate to form bachelor groups. Secondly, multiple harems and bachelors can merge to form larger herds. Plains zebra are pure grazers and are therefore strongly associated with grasslands and savanna woodlands. They can be found in both these habitats in tropical and temperate climates, and from sea level to over 3,500m in elevation. Only deserts,

to exploit a greater range of grass quality and they are thus able to occupy a wider variety of habitats compared to most other similar sized ruminants. This also enables the species to undergo large migrations in order to track changing resources, and by removing the older growth and opening up the more nutritious new undergrowth, the zebra allows the more selective species to utilise the grasslands, for example wildebeest and Thompson’s gazelle. Thus, plains zebra play a vital role in initiating the pattern of what we call “succession” within the grazer community, thereby contributing to the future biodiversity of grasslands and savanna woodlands. Understanding the ecology of plains zebra and ensuring their future persistence is therefore important not only for the conservation of the species but for the conservation of ecosystems as well. The Majete zebra study has four primary aims: Firstly, to determine the species’ demographics by physically identifying each individual zebra based on the unique stripe patterns on either side of their body. This will provide data on the number of zebras within the reserve, the sex ratios and age class structure, as well as the growth rate

of the population, which will allow us to calculate Majete’s carrying capacity for zebra, in other words, how many zebra can Majete support. Secondly, the project aims to investigate the Zebra’s seasonal dietary preference. This is done by collecting fresh dung samples and analysing the samples (with the use of stable isotopes) to determine the percentage of graze versus browse plant species consumed in the various seasons. Thirdly, the study is investigating artificial waterhole usage by zebras within the reserve in order to determine where they prefer to drink, at what time of the day they prefer to drink and to investigate whether there is a seasonal difference in waterhole usage. Lastly, the behaviour and social interactions of Majete’s zebra are also being observed. The data collected from this study will assist the management team of Majete with future decisions regarding the conservation of zebra within Majete and the rest of Malawi. Apart from conducting research on zebra, the Majete Wildlife Research team is also conducting a number of other research

projects, including a study on the three apex predators of Majete (The Eye magazine June - August 2016) and a study on the distribution of water within the reserve. Past projects have included a study on the demographics, habitat use and diet of elephants (The Eye magazine Sep–Dec 2015); the harvesting of grasses by the local communities within the reserve (The Eye magazine Dec 2015-Feb 2016); the ecology of Majete’s spotted hyena (The Eye magazine Sep-Nov 2014); as well as a comparison

between the diet and habitat use of Majete’s impala and waterbuck. Exciting future projects are also in the planning phase. As a research team we are excited to see what the future holds for Majete and African Parks and commend them for the fantastic work that they are doing. It is truly a privilege to be a part of Majete’s conservation success story. It’s been a rough two years for Malawi and much of southern Africa, with El Niño weather conditions leading to drought and excessive heat. Resulting food shortages and economic challenges for countries like Malawi have certainly made life difficult in the warm heart of Africa. Unfortunately, a new species of maize pest has made its way to southern Africa, and it’s creating worldwide concern that things may get worse before they get better. The threat is an imported version of the African armyworm, a caterpillar – not, in fact, an actual worm – that is known to march across fields like a military assault, damaging a variety of crops. This armyworm is not new to Malawi. In 2016, farmers suffered an infestation of the native African armyworm that impacted seven districts. This infestation often meant the uprooting and replanting of entire fields, in spite of the government’s distribution of pesticides. However, the new pest, the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), is even more treacherous as it conducts the majority of its travels as a moth. As a larva, it hides itself within plants, maize for example, and an infestation can damage more than 70% of crops before it makes its presence known – by re-emerging as a moth that can travel up to 1,000km with a good tailwind. The fall armyworm is native to Latin America, and while its specific route to southern Africa is as yet unknown, it most likely traversed the Atlantic stowed away on commercial flights. Key experts from the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and important partners, representing 16 different

32

countries, held an emergency meeting in Harare during mid-February this year to determine how best to identify, contain, and eliminate the emerging threat. As of February 2017, the fall armyworm has been detected in Malawi. Because the two types of armyworms are able to eat all kinds of crops, including millet, the combined threat has the potential to negatively impact the quantity and quality of food available across the region. Experts from the FAO meeting have recommended vigilance and the stockpiling of proper pesticides – which must be applied at the correct point in the fall armyworm’s life cycle – in order to effectively control the pest. The government of Malawi, along with other governments in the region, has begun stockpiling insecticides to slow the spread of the fall armyworm in the region. Farmers and their supporters should remain vigilant and look for signs of the caterpillar in maize and millet fields: the armyworm feeds during the day, and can be seen causing leaves and stalks to look tattered. Fall armyworm larvae vary in color from light to dark brown and has a very distinctive white “Y” marking on the top of its head capsule, and the adult moth has a light brown body with white lower and brown speckled upper wings. If you see these signs, reach out to the nearest agricultural extension or advisory office – which may be government, grassroots, or NGO-led, as soon as possible. Keep an eye out for more information on the armyworm situation in your local news and future issues of The Eye Malawi

All kids get worms. And many adults do too. However, in Africa, the variety of possible worm infections is gold medal winning. It’s a little bit like a Dr Seuss book. “Some are red and some are blue. Some are old and some are new. Some are sad and some are glad and some are very, very bad.” Approximately 2 billion people are infected worldwide with worms and sub-Saharan Africa is one of the most heavily infected regions. Worm infections have traditionally been ignored or neglected by the local and international health authorities, who are struggling to deal with more high profile diseases like malaria and HIV. However, the impact of constant worm infections cannot be underestimated. Worms

42

cause anaemia, malnutrition, abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhoea or can even completely block the bowel causing severe pain and illness. Anaemia and malnutrition have a devastating effect on a child’s ability to attend school, concentrate and learn, meaning that disadvantaged kids with worms stay disadvantaged. There are three main types of intestinal worms that infect people. They are all transmitted by contamination of soil by worm eggs in areas with poor sanitation. Hence they are also called soil-transmitted worms (helminths). They are the roundworm, the whipworm and the hookworm. The roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) can grow up to 40cm in length and heavy infections can cause fatal bowel blockages.

www.theeyemw.com

Wayward worms can also make their way into sensitive areas such as the brain with disastrous results. Adult worms can live for 1-2 years inside the human body. During this time a female can shed a quarter of a million eggs per day. Where sanitation is poor these eggs can find their way into the soil where they are picked up by children and adults during outdoor work or play. They can also contaminate food grown in soil that contains eggs. The whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) is transmitted in much the same way as the roundworm. It is a smaller worm, growing to only 4cm in length. It can cause painful diarrhoea with blood and mucus. Heavy infections can lead to anaemia, growth retardation and impaired cognitive development. The hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus) is a little different. In areas with poor sanitation (pit latrines or open defecation) or where human excrement is used as a fertiliser, eggs in the soil will hatch into immature worms. These worms can penetrate directly through human skin, most usually through the feet. This happens in areas where people walk barefoot on contaminated soil. Once in the body the immature worms reach the heart and lungs via the blood vessels. In the lungs they burrow through the lung tissue until they are coughed up and swallowed in the phlegm. Once swallowed they reach the intestine where

they live for several years, maturing into adult worms and shedding millions of eggs, and so the cycle continues. Hookworm infections do not usually produce any noticeable gastrointestinal symptoms. However, the hookworm survives by sucking blood from the wall of the human intestine. Infection with hookworm is thus the leading cause of anaemia worldwide. It’s like a miniature internal vampire. In children long term anaemia from hookworm infection can cause growth retardation and impair mental development. Thankfully avoiding and treating soil-transmitted worm infections is relatively simple. Improved sanitation and hygiene measures prevent contamination of soil with worm eggs and have led to a massive decrease in worm infections in the developed world. Hookworm infection can also be avoided by wearing shoes. Treatment of worm infections usually only requires a single dose of a well-tolerated, safe and very cheap antihelminthic (anti worm medicine). This can be repeated once or twice a year in areas with high prevalence of disease. In Malawi, the anti-worm medicine is donated to the Ministry of Health via the World Health Organization, for the treatment of all children of school age. For the rest of us, the medication is readily available over the counter at all pharmacies, is chewable, making it easy for kids to take and actually tastes pretty good. Pass me some albendazole please!

After all, “They are only animals”. Even in urban environments we are surrounded by various animals – domestic pets, livestock for food, wild birds and other wildlife. We see some that are clearly well-looked after, even pampered! Others are injured, sick, lacking water, exposed to all extremes of weather, left dangling for hours in the sun to be sold and maybe targets for sling-shots or stones. There are some simple, internationally recognised guidelines, shown in the illustration, known as the 5 Freedoms for Animals. It is inconceivable for us to imagine being whipped, confined in small spaces, or tied to a heavy weight all day long. We humans cherish our right to welfare, yet we often don’t comprehend that animals likewise have a right to welfare. Animals suffer in the same way and to the same degree that humans do. They feel pain, pleasure, fear and frustration and can show happiness, excitement and content just as we humans do. LSPCA is dedicated to animal welfare and instilling a culture of animal care and compassion in the general public through awareness campaigns, primary and tertiary education, farm animal clinics, donkey welfare programme, an annual rabies vaccination campaign and deliver free spay and neuter services to those communities who would usually not afford vet treatments for their animals. We advocate for animals and promote and enforce the Animal Protection Act in Malawi. Our Veterinary Clinic and Centre for Animal Welfare in Kanengo are run by a dedicated and highly qualified team 24/7 to provide the best veterinary care and ensure that the 5 Freedoms for Animals are understood and practised by all in Malawi.

One of the major problems for the animals of Lengwe was a source of permanent water. Before the rapid increase in human population and the establishment of large sugar plantations, the game could migrate in the dry season to the Mwanza and Shire Rivers. Due to this problem, the Reserve was in danger of being de-proclaimed and the remaining Nyala translocated to Mwabvi Game Reserve. However many more Nyala than were originally estimated were discovered hiding in the dense thickets. In 1964 Prime Minister, Dr Banda, intervened and ordered the retention of the Reserve and the provision of a borehole. By 1970 four boreholes were established and the population of Nyala and other species flourished. In 1970 Lengwe was granted National Park status and in 1975 it was ex-

70

panded to include a vast new area in the west along the Mozambique border. There were, however constant problems with the supply of water to the pans. This was due to the following reasons: Pumps breaking down or being stolen Lack of DNPW funding to repair, replace/ general maintenance Erratic supply of diesel Fortunately SUCOMA / ILLOVO came to the rescue and agreed to pump its water into the Park. There were still many problems as understandably the sugar estate gave priority to its plantations and DNPW often had difficulty in maintaining the pipelines.

In 2010 WESM Blantyre Branch provided Beit Trust funding to drill a borehole at Nyala Lodge and the latter provided the pump. As well as providing water for the Lodge, it could also pump to Main Hide in an emergency situation which frequently occurred. Solar water Project, Lengwe National Park - Shire River Basin Management Program (SRBMP) One of the portions allocated to the SRBMP was to repair and resupply animal population drinking water to the park. Due to a glitch, this portion was not sent out for consultancy and design. As a result there was no time left to go through the whole tendering process. In early 2015, I, Max Del Bufalo, of Jambo Africa Ltd and Nyala Lodge, offered to help at no charge, the offer was accepted by Department of National Parks and SRBMP to assist and come up with a design to rejuvenate the ailing water supply system to the water holes in Lengwe National Park which previously piped water through approximately 20 kilometres of pipeline originating from the Illovo Sugar Estate irrigation canal.

72

These pipe lines were installed- some - approximately 25 years and others 20 years ago. Their degeneration, combined with the severe low water levels in the Shire River resulted in very little to no drinking water for the animals during the long hot months of the Lower Shire. It was heart breaking to observe and obviously a major mitigating factor to the decline of animals over the last 5 years. This portion of the project not going ahead because of some technicality was not an option hence the offer to assist for free. Our task was not easy: With a limited budget from SRBMP the challenge was to find a way to create a system that is sustainable and as maintenance free as possible whilst also taking pressure off Illovo who have for so many years pumped water into Lengwe National Park amidst many challenges. Thank you Illovo! Our first approach was to revitalise the existing pipeline. In short, this proved too expensive with the disposable budget. The only option available to us was boreholes and solar pumps, but the challenge was toLengwe find 3a way of protecting the equipment once installed.

Nothing is sacred when it comes to solar equipment especially solar panels. Many people who have set up solar panels have had them stolen at some point or other. Even other protected areas, with electrified fences and strict security have had the odd panel stolen. A considerable amount of time was spent talking, taking advice and searching the internet. Eventually a company in South Africa was found who specialised in protective equipment, they made anti-theft and anti-vandalism products for South African telecommunication and water treatment facilities. They had two products for solar protection that caught our attention and could help our cause; one was an antitheft system and the other anti-vandalism. We asked them if they could combine both systems into one and after a few months

of correspondence and re-design options, we decided that it was the way to go. Prior to the decision of going the borehole route, we had also made up our mind that the solar pumping equipment of choice would be Grundfos; as far as we were concerned, Grundfos are one of if not the leaders in solar pumping technology. I contacted Kim Jacobsen of Bluezone Ltd, the agent for Grundfos pumps in Malawi, Kim was a great help, his knowledge, patience and advice was invaluable during the design phase. National Parks inhabitants of the area probably dating back to the Iron Age. These come in form of iron smelting kilns which, despite minimal protection from agents of weather, still stand today! Another relic of early inhabitants of the area is a collection of rock art. This is a group of paintings made thousands of years ago using indigenous painting materials and skills that can be seen in caves, till this day!

All these works of our early ancestors are present in the Solonje area, in the west of the park close to the Zambian border. Miondwe Wildlife Camp is the nearest park station to these treasures. For climbers, Miondwe, Wang’ombe Rumen, Singwe and Chipiri Hills provide a perfect opportunity to stretch a few muscles! Lake Malawi National Park This, the world’s first freshwater National Park and a World Heritage Site, is within the Nankumba peninsula, where the lake breaks into two arms.

Kasungu National Park In the west of the central region, bordering Zambia is Kasungu National Park, an 800 sq mile (2100 sq km) area of natural woodland and bush with occasional stretches of more open grass. Poaching has reduced the number of some species of animals but, contrary to rumours in some quarters, there is still plenty of wildlife to be seen. Elephants and antelopes are common, as are small herds of buffalo and zebra. The cats include both lions and leopards. Inhabiting the bush are hyenas, wild dogs, servals and jackals. There is a significant number of hippos in the lake at Lifupa and as elsewhere in Malawi, the birdwatcher is well catered for.

Cape Maclear is the most well known for tourism part of the park but Maleri Islands, Nkhudzi Hills and Nkhudzi Spit, Mwenya Hills and Monkey Bay as well as Thumbi East are also beautiful locations within the park. It was designated as a National Park in 1980, to protect the diversity of tropical fish living there, some not found anywhere else on earth. The park includes a land area around the cape and bay, as well as the lake and islands up to 100 metres (330ft) off shore. Here is a veritable aquarium of tropical fish providing a colourful kaleidoscopic display. Of the countless thousands of freshwater

This is a park which is relatively easy to drive around. Access to the park has been greatly improved in recent years and it is relatively easy to reach from Lilongwe (approx. 100 miles/160km), Blantyre 450Km.Driving to the park through fields of tobacco, maize, groundnuts also provides an exciting contrast to the city noise that you leave behind. Apart from the game and birds, the park contains evidence of the tools that were used by early

National Parks driveable tracks will lead you through the 80 sq km of park that is accessible for game viewing. Low hills, outcrops of sandstone, adorn the west of the park.

fish, the mbuna cichlids are more abundant and varied here than anywhere else in the world. Boats are available for hire and the fish will feed directly from the hand. Away from the Lake, the park has baboons, antelope and hyrax and of course, there is a great variety of birdlife including fish eagles, cormorants and hamerkops. There is a lot to do for the tourist in Lake Malawi National Park. These include, sunset boat rides, snorkelling, scuba diving, bicycle rides through the village or up the hilly road, swimming, going on traditional fishing trips on dugouts with the locals, learning how to prepare traditional meals and many others….the local guides will brief you about all this! Hiking on the park’s many hills will be an experience you would not forget. The park also has cultural and historical sites like the first Livingstonia Mission site by Scottish Missionaries and their grave site, Mwala wa Mphini (the Rock with natural tattoos),the cross painting, Otter point and the Ilala ship yard at Monkey Bay, where Malawi’s oldest sailing ship starts its journeys up north and back. Lengwe National Park This park is 350 sq miles (900 sq km) in extent at only an hours drive (80 km) from Blantyre. The vegetation is thicket, with some deciduous woodland and denser tree growth along the stream courses. In the eastern area a network of

Lengwe is quite arid outside the rainy season and many of the water courses become dry sandy channels. This aids game viewing because it forces the animals to use the few pools that are permanent supplies of water. There are hides and man-made pools in the eastern area of the park just a short distance from the main gate. The advantages of the hides are that one may see a mix of wildlife together at the water-hole. The park is the most northern place in the world to find indigenous Nyala. Other antelope like the magnificent kudu also roam the park as do common duiker, the small Livingstone’s suni, bushbuck and impala. Baboon, vervet and blue monkeys, bush-baby, warthog, bush pig and buffalo are also seen in the park. In total there are five species of primates. Predators are leopard and hyena. The birdlife of Lengwe is attractive with about 300 or so species recorded. The government tourist lodge was renovated and refurbished in 2003 and now operates as Nyala Lodge. Depending on rainfall other than road leading to Nyala Lodge some of the other roads in the park are inaccessible in January or February. Game viewing can be done on foot using either guides from Nyala Lodge or scouts from the Lengwe National Park office. Liwonde National Park Although only 220 sq miles (580 sq km). It is about 100 miles (160 km) north of Blantyre and only more than half that distance from the hotels on the southern lakeshore. Additionally, game viewing is enhanced because the River Shire flows along its western border. Wildlife includes large numbers of elephants and the river attracts countless hippos and crocodiles. Antelope include kudu, sable and bushbuck. There are lions, leopards and more recently, the black rhino has been re-introduced into the rhino sanctuary, currently there are 16 rhinos in the sanctuary which are planned to be released sometime in the near future.

National Parks Birdlife is exceptionally varied. Pel’s fishing owl is often seen at dusk along the river’s edge. There is accommodation in the way of Mvuu Lodge and nearby Mvuu Camp. To reach the riverside lodge, visitors can approach by road and then be ferried across the river, they can drive through the park or they can use a pre-arranged boat from Liwonde town. In the southern region of the park, close to town, there is also accommodation available at Liwonde Safari Camp and Bushman’s Baobabs. There is an airstrip, served by scheduled and charter flights. Nyika National Park In 1965 the Nyika National Park became the first certified park in Malawi. Nyika is Malawi’s largest park with an area of no less than 1250 sq miles (3200 sq km). It extends across the great plateau which is essentially a granitic dome and its environment is like none other in Africa. The name, Nyika, means “where the water comes from” and it is, indeed, one of Malawi’s most important catchment areas. The rolling scenery is at its best in the rainy season when over 200 types of orchid are in flower. The grasslands of Nyika are also rich in wildflowers in other seasons. Nyika is wonderful for trekking, with the route from Chilinda in the centre of the park to Livingstonia Mission and then eventually to the lake at Chitimba! A number of other walking trails are also possible just within the plateau, ranging in length from a night to three nights long. Mountain biking, walking and driving day safaris, as well as more conventional 4x4 excursions are available. The montane vegetation attracts large numbers of antelope from the diminutive duiker to eland and roan. Zebra are common. The park has one of the highest densities of leopard in central Africa and there are a number of species of smaller mammals such as warthog and bush pig. Elephants and buffalo usually keep to the lower ground on the northern edge of the park but elephants have been seen on the high plateau, on a number of occasions. For the birdwatcher, the park has a lot to offer: over 400 species have been recorded. The rare Denham’s bustard and the wattled crane are among those to be seen, as is the red-winged

76

francolin - endemic to Nyika. There is such a lot to see and do in the vast park: waterfalls, a Neolithic rock shelter, trout fishing and even a ‘magic lake’ are just some of the attractions. There is an airstrip for fly-in safaris. Michuiru Nature Sanctuary Michiru Nature Sanctuary is situated 9 km from Blantyre and is part of Michiru Mountain. It is a beautiful area of 12.5 sq. km. which consists of brachystegia woodland and some riverine forest. There is wildlife present namely hyaena, bushbuck, common duiker, porcupine, civet cat, genet, hyrax and Cape hare. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded. For visitors there are an Education / Interpretation Centre, a Picnic Spot with barbeque and six trails of varying length including one to the Peak (1470 m) affording superb views as far as Zomba Mountain to the east and the Shire Valley across to the Kirk Range in the west. Michiru Nature Sanctuary is managed by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife and receives huge support from the Blantyre Branch of the Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi. The Society maintains the trails and trail signage, repairs bridges, provides a snare bounty and has obtained funding for eleven scout houses. This lovely area provides a haven of peace away from the bustle and noise of Blantyre City and is the only mountain around Blantyre that still has indigenous forest and some wildlife.

Wildlife Reserves Inside Majete there are three different types of accommodation. Situated around a serene floodlit waterhole that attracts a variety of wildlife, Thawale Lodge is a peaceful haven from which to experience Majete. Completely unfenced, the camp is regularly visited by wildlife. Thawale Lodge offers six double and twin tented chalets all en-suite and each with its own private veranda overlooking the waterhole. There is also a family chalet with two onsuite bedrooms, veranda and living room. In the north of the reserve, Robin Pope Safaris operate in a private concession and run the exclusive up market Mkulumadzi Lodge.

Majete Wildlife Reserve Majete Wildlife Reserve is a 70,000 hectare tract of pristine bush in the southern region of Malawi, one hour’s drive from Blantyre. In 2003 African Parks, in agreement with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, took over the management of the Reserve. To date, over 142km of fencing has been completed around Majete and its total length is patrolled on a daily basis. In addition, 250km of road network has been constructed. The most significant change which has really seen Majete come back to life is the reintroduction of species previously eradicated by poaching. Since 2003 over 2,500 animals have been reintroduced from fourteen species including elephant, black rhino, leopard, buffalo, eland and sable, and these have increased to over 10,000 animals today. Lion were re-introduced in 2012 making Majete one of the only reserves in Malawi where the BIG FIVE can be viewed all year round.

The community camp-site is equipped with a thatched bar and dining space, barbeque area, toilets and hot solar showers and all revenue goes directly to the communities running it. Near to the entrance of the gate the Heritage Centre includes a curio shop, Environment Education Centre and a swimming pool is being built. There is the Mwembezi restaurant which overlooks a water hole where animals come to drink where a variety of Malawian and western cuisine is offered as well as snacks, cold drinks, beer and tea and coffee. For more information about Majete Wildlife Reserve, please visit: www.african-parks.org or Email: thawale@african-parks.org Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve The Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve, located at the southernmost tip of Malawi, is over 137sq km of pristine wilderness, boasting biodiversity unrivalled by other parks in the region. Cont...

As a visitor you can explore this magnificent reserve in your own vehicle or go on a guided drive in one of the safari vehicles accompanied by a professional wildlife guide. Other activities include guided bush walks or bird walks, boat trips on the Shire River, Behind the Scenes conservation tour, hiking to the top of Mabele Hills, visiting the Kapachira Falls and view spots or a visit to one of our local communities. There are viewing hides built over water holes and near the Shire River at Mvuu spot where wildlife and birds can be seen and picnics taken. There are also shelters for picnics at the Kapachira Falls and on Hall Martin Road.

Wildlife Reserves With open savannah and magnificent rocky outcrops that allow 360 degree views over the mopane woolands, Mwabvi is an oasis of tranquillity. Wildlife includes kudu, buffalo, impala, warthogs, sable, steenbok, samango monkeys and baboons. There are also over 350 species of bird, including the protected ground hornbill and numerous spectacular native and migratory species, making it a paradise for avid birdwatchers. Day trips are available and it is possible to camp close to Mwabvi River Gorge Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve Nkhotakota, to the east of the region and near the Lake, is one of the two large game areas in the central region. Its vast 700 sq miles (1800 sq km) is of rugged terrain crossed by a number of rivers, which tumble down the edge of the escarpment as they make their way to the Lake. Most of the reserve is miombo woodland with large patches of tall grasses and 40 Ha. of evergreen forest on the summit of Chipata Mountain. This is a wonderful example of true wilderness, which particularly attracts those who wish to enjoy walking safaris, fishing and climbing. Access to the reserve is possible with saloon cars during the dry season, but within the reserve, walking is the preferred mode of travelling because there are few roads or driveable tracks. The range of mammals is as good as anywhere in Malawi although the environment makes viewing difficult. Elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard are all present. Roan and sable, kudu and waterbuck and a wide variety of smaller antelope, as well as zebra, all occur within the reserve boundaries. The Bua River is home to a larger number of crocodiles. Vwaza Wildlife Reserve Vwaza Wildlife Reserve, an area of marsh and plain, with a few rocky outcrops, is all of 400 sq miles (1000 sq km) and lies along the Zambian border north-west of Mzuzu. The reserve has a wonderful mix of vegetation: forest and grassland, thin woodland and marsh. It is this rich habitat which attracts a splendid range of birdlife. Nearly 300 species of birds have been recorded including stork, heron and the white-faced tree duck. Herds of thirty or forty elephants are regularly to be seen and there are large numbers of hippos. Lake Kazuni, near the main entrance to the reserve is famous for its hippos. Buffalo are present in the reserve but their roaming habits make their sightings less easy to predict. Kazuni Safari Camp offer accommodation in this area. Just outside the reserve is the community-owned Chigwere Cultural Lodge, an initiative by the community under the guidance of the Department of Parks and Wildlife. The intention is to make sure communities take part in the tourism activities in the area to ensure that they economically benefit from eco-tourism. At the cultural lodge tourists experience the true rural life of Kazuni. Traditional dances, food, and

On 22nd July 2015, African Parks signed an agreement with government acting through the Department of Parks and Wildlife under Ministry of Information, Tourism and Culture to manage, finance and develop Nkhota Kota Wildlife Reserve for a period of 25 years on a Public Private Partnership Agreement. Africa Parks is building a 15,000 hectare sanctuary to accommodate 500 elephants and several other antelopes; putting in place a network of roads that will cater for the management of the reserve and tourism.

Wildlife Reserves all other ways of life in Malawi’s rural north are available at this village. Access to the reserve is largely by road either from Mzuzu, the Northern city of Malawi or from Tanzania, passing through Rumphi District Headquarters or from Nyika National Park. Visitors can also fly in through the grass surfaced landing strip, for lighter aircraft. Lilongwe Wildlife Reserve Not many capital cities can boast such stunning habitat right at their heart and this 180 hectare reserve is undoubtedly a must-see for all visitors passing through. The sprawling acacia combretum woodlands are the last example in the Central Region, and they are home to a wide variety of wildlife from antelopes, wild pigs and hyena to over 200 species of bird. The reserve is cut in half by Kenyatta Road, on one side of which is Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary, where guided walks and fantastic early morning birding are on offer. On the other you will find Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, an internationally accredited sanctuary home to around 200 rescued wild animals. Guided sanctuary tours are available every hour from 8am to 5pm, or you can take yourself along the 4km or so of walking trails that wind alongside the river before stopping off at their new café for lunch. Email: info@llwc.org, www.lilongwewildlife.org for more information or call 0881 788 999. Kuti Wildlife Reserve Kuti Wildlife Reserve is a stunning 2000 hectare reserve located close to Salima, less than 1,5hrs from Lilongwe and half an hour from the lake. Set up as a wildlife reserve in 2005, Kuti aims to protect the habitats and wildlife within the reserve. The reserve is a haven to a huge variety of freeroaming wildlife, with large mammals such as giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, sable, kudu and impala through to primates, reptiles and hundreds of bird species. There are no large predators or dangerous game in Kuti, so you can explore and take in your surroundings at your own pace on foot or by bike, without the need for a vehicle or scout.

villas. Gate fees are low (850/450 for Malawians, 3000/1500 Residents, 5000/2500 Tourists) and as a not-for-profit organisation, all the revenue generated goes back into the park and helps to fund community projects. There is a fully trained wildlife scout team, which perseveres to protect the reserve with anti-poaching techniques and patrols. It’s an exciting time at Kuti with construction of a new reception/dining area and a new volunteer’s centre! Wifi is now available at our new reception area and our menu is online to order food in advance in case you are in a hurry. and yet the crew is still enthusiastic and full of smiles. “We are all committed to the cause and the projects we have visited are truly amazing. It is humbling to see the dedication these people have to make a difference and protect Africa’s wildlife and it motivates us to work harder to get their message to the world.” Says expedition leader Carla Geyser. The expedition has visited over 20 conservation projects on their journey and an absolute highlight has been their visit to Kasungu National Park where they witnessed the difference their fundraising efforts have made first hand.

T

he all female crew of the Elephant Ignite Expedition have reached the finale of their 100 day African odyssey aimed at raising awareness for the poaching crisis faced by Africa’s elephants. The expedition departed from Sibaya Casino and Entertainment complex in South Africa on the 9th of August and travelled through South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya. This epic journey is focussed on community upliftment, youth education, public awareness for wildlife crime and poaching with the focus on the plight of Africa’s declining elephant populations and a fundraising drive to support the organisations that are fighting the battles on the frontline. It’s been an adventure, but also hard work... Travelling gruelling distances with rough terrain, little or at times no outside communications, very basic facilities 98

Kasungu National Park is located slightly west of the central region of Malawi and has been ravaged by poaching. Their elephant population has dropped from 2000 in the 2009 to only 56 in 2016, making it abundantly clear that their elephants were in serious trouble. Remke Lasance from the Netherlands heard about the critical situation in Kasungu, quit her job and moved to Malawi to help as a volunteer. Fast forward two years and this passionate and brave lady have founded the Kasungu Elephant Foundation and is focussed on helping these amazing creatures and the individuals they co-exist with. Remke contacted the Elephant Ignite Expedition with a wishlist of items required to help not just the elephants, but also the community of Mndanka village living on the border of the national park. There is no fence between the community and the reserve and human-elephant conflict is extreme. The village also has no access to water

waterpump. It was truly heart-warming to see the difference running water has made to the over 2000 people living here. The ladies enjoyed a traditional African meal with the chief and community elders after which they received a tour of the newly constructed beehive fences and mushroom farming facilities.

and women trek on foot to fetch water in the reserve putting them at risk with elephants. The expedition donated funds to install a borehole and water pump in Mndanka village and in just a couple of months Remke and her team have worked miracles. Not only do the community have running water, they have been up skilled to grow their own oyster mushrooms as the first step in a much larger permaculture initiative. The indigenous oyster mushrooms where previously harvested inside the reserve during the growing season. Being in a position to cultivate the mushrooms themselves under controlled conditions they now have a supply all year around. Kasungu Elephant Foundation also assisted with the installation of beehive fences to help keep the elephants at bay. The community harvests the honey from the beehives for their own use and the aim is to ultimately sell the surplus honey as their bee colony grows.

Just before heading off, the chief announced he had one last surprise... A session of manual labour with pick axes digging and preparing swales to manage water runoff in the fields. Sweaty and tired the ladies had to admit to newfound respect for the hard work rural people do on a daily basis. Finally on October 5th 2016 the protective equipment arrived in Lengwe on a 30-ton truck from South Africa. This was the moment we had been waiting for. Firstly panic took hold, then calm set in soon after the installation process began. We needed to beat the rains which would have hampered the project. The contractor chosen to do the job was Bluezone. Ideally, we would have preferred to do the installations in the cooler months but it was not meant to be. We were in for a very hot experience: Average temperatures were between 40° and 44°C in the shade during the hottest time of the day; due to the drought we had constant battles with bees seeking moisture off our skin and although they were not being aggressive, they still managed to get into our shirt sleeves or

pants and inevitably stung. None of us escaped a sting or four, fortunately there were no allergic reactions. Walter Muggleton, partner and Director of Jambo Africa/Nyala Lodge, who resides in South Africa came out to help me with the project during the civil working stage; his help and perseverance was selfless and very much appreciated. Civil Works started October 10th and completed on October 21st; as we were finishing the civil works another team were behind us installing the pumps. Then the installation of the 6m towers began, a truck with crane came down for this very delicate job which was accomplished with ease by Bluezone. The first water hole to be completed was Link Pan. There was not one of us that did not have a warm fuzzy feeling when water started gushing out the pipe for the first time. I, for one was quite emotional and teary eyed. Within days the animals started using the water hole and followed suit with the other water holes. In places where I had not seen game in years it suddenly reappeared. In a couple of years, Lengwe will be the spectacle that it once was. That’ if the structures we put up do their job and do not succumb to vandalism and theft. Our hope is that we receive sufficient rain this year to completely fill the water holes so come the dry season the solar pumps will maintain the levels for the next 20 years or so. A huge thank you also to Mark Galloway of Farming & Engineering Services who came to our aid with a fork lift to assist offloading the very heavy equipment when it arrived from South Africa.
