From the Editor Big Hi to All, What a miracle on getting this issue out on time what with the power situation. But we have (pat on the back). Welcome to the Christmas issue of the Eye and what an issue it is. I was hoping for an article from Escom, explaining to us laymen their current situation and plans for the future, unfortunately they were too busy. Funny that. Perhaps next issue I will be able to shed (not load) some light on the matter. But not to fear, as I have some wonderful articles to entertain you. This issue my learned friend Harrison Simfukwe has indulged us with a lead on the Porcupine. .. Did you know they are excellent swimmers! Well Done to Nyomi Rowsell who brings us `cleaning up Malawi` and how recycling can shape the environment. Dental Chic, Dr Shabana shares her wisdom, not teeth, in a nail

biting piece on gum disease & my good Doctor, Susan Waldron shares some interesting facts on Tuberculosis, stay tuned for more from her. Rachel McRobb of Conservation South Luangwa brings us a piece for our Zambia section on their excellent efforts & Rotary Club of Lilongwe brings us an advertorial/supplement of sorts regarding just who are Rotarians and their efforts. Big thanks to Eveline Van Dam for her efforts in putting this together from her side. A massive thanks to all of the above and to all our advertisers, it’s a pleasure to deal with y`all and without whom The Eye would not be possible. Stay safe this Christmas‌ho, ho, ho, and herewith my he, he, he One day a little boy wrote to Santa Claus, `please send me a sister` Santa wrote back `OK, send me your mother`! Merry Christmas to Everybody!

Introduction The word porcupine comes from French porc espin meaning Spined Pig. In Latin porcupine means Quill Pig. The females are called sows, the males are called boars and the young are called porcupettes or simply pups. A porcupine family unit is called a Prickle. Their residents are known as Dens. Porcupines bear some vague resemblance to pigs, but are actually among the largest rodents. Rodents make up the largest order of mammals, with over 40 percent of mammalian species. Most rodents are small in size and are characterized by possessing incisors in the upper and lower jaws. Porcupines are further characterized by hair which is a defining feature of mammals. However, over the process of evolution, porcupines have modified their hairs that are now enlarged, stiffened and strengthened to form spines or quills and some fur. Taxonomically, porcupines are classified into two different families namely the Old World and the New World Porcupines respectively. The Old World Porcupines belong to the family of Hystricidae and comprises 11 species. The New World Porcupines belong to the family of Erethizontidae and constitutes 17 species. Although both porcupine families belong to the same branch of the rodent family tree – Hystricognathi, the New World porcupines look very different from their Old World counterparts. They are actually not closely related to one another, despite the fact that both possess quills.

Description The general physical characteristic features for porcupines are the quills, spines, and bristles. The head, body, and (in some species) tail are covered by spines, which are thick, stiff and sharp. Spine coloration is brownish or blackish, often with conspicuous white bands around them. Longest spines tend to be found on rump and shortest on cheeks. Normally, quills lie flat and point to the rear. In both families the backs and sides of the porcupines are covered with true quills, which they erect and flare if predators approach too closely. Old World porcupines have short, flattened spines or bristles on the head, neck, feet, and belly, while the undersides of New World porcupines are covered in much softer fur. Porcupine quills are loosely rooted, so they detach easily when they are embedded in an attacker or when the porcupine shakes its body. Some of the tail quills are hollow and make a rattling noise when shaken by the animal. Geographical distribution and ecological habitat Porcupines have adapted to almost any environment. The Old World porcupines are extant in the warmer parts of Africa, Asia, and southern Europe. They are terrestrial and often occupy abandoned deep burrows, tunnel and holes often times made by other animals and are modified to suit their requirements. Some animals known to prepare burrows which are later occupied by porcupines are Aardwolves and Aardvarks.

In addition to burrows, porcupines turn caves, rock crevices, decaying logs, hollow trees as their dens. Sometimes porcupines dig deep burrows to protect them from the weather, for periodic nesting and for their own habitation; may be used for many years. A single burrow may hold up to 10 individuals. Nests are constructed of plant material within the den. Porcupines are considerably more sociable, living in small family groups consisting of a mated pair and their young, with juveniles from previous litters staying behind even after reaching maturity. The New World porcupines are restricted in the forests of tropical South and Central America, with one species found in temperate North America. They are highly arboreal, and many species spend a substantial amount of time moving from tree to tree in search of food. To aid in climbing, many species use their long claws to grip tree bark and possess a relatively long, prehensile tail. These porcupines make nests in logs, tree roots, holes in rocks and trees. 10

Porcupine predators Due to their effective defense system, porcupines do not easily succumb to predators because they are covered with quills that painfully stick into almost any predator that may attack them. When a porcupine senses danger, it freezes and waits for the danger to pass. If action is necessary, it will charge the attacker with its quills erect, rattle their hollow tails and run backward towards their aggressor, make itself look a lot bigger and more vicious than in its usual state. However, porcupines are challenged by predators like lions, leopards, hyenas, pythons, large owls. Besides, it is reported that there are some predators that have figured out how to kill and eat porcupines. Bobcats, cougars and fishers have learned that porcupines have no quills on its stomach. So one of these will kill and eat a porcupine by flipping it into its back and biting into its vulnerable belly

Porcupine feeding and diet Porcupines are herbivores feeding mostly on vegetation such as bark, roots, tubers, bulbs, and fallen fruit. Besides, crops such as sweet potatoes, bananas, peanuts, pineapple, maize, sugarcane, onions, potatoes, cucumbers, beans, melons, grapes, and mangoes form a greater part of the diet. Occasionally carrion feeding, nibbling on insects and gnawing of bones is very common. Gnawed bones often litter areas around dens, probably for deficient minerals such as calcium. Porcupines are believed to have made large collections of old bones and other hard objects in caves that they used as dens. This behaviour brought some confusion when paleontologists studied fossilized accumulations of bones in African caves; and upon finding bones with scratches and gouges and others that had been sharpened, proposed that these were signs of ancient hominids. According to such hypotheses, australopithecines once lived in these caves, made tools and weapons out of animal bones, and used them to butcher the carcasses of prey. Clearly, the piles of bones represented the remains of animals killed and then taken apart as bone tools. However, it was discovered that many of these sites and their

bone accumulations were actually made by porcupines; and that any scratching and sharpening of bones had been carried out by rodent incisors, and not hominid. Reproduction During copulation, the male will mount the female followed by loud whining, grunting and squealing in the process. The gestation period lasts between 93–114 days, depending on species; and the breeding occurs usually once a year (sometimes twice), usually one to two young, but up to four in a litter is possible. The off-springs have the ability to locomote soon after birth. Eyes are open when born or open within first few hours. All baby porcupines are born with their quills, but the quills are too small and flexible to be very effective against predators. After a week or so, the soft, short hair-like quills will harden and the young(s) may leave nest with mother. Sexual maturity is reached at nine to 18 months. The life span on average is about 20 years. World Conservation Status Porcupines are listed as Least Concern by IUCN in view of their wide distribution, presumed large population, they occur in a number of protected areas, have a tolerance of a degree of habitat modification, and because they are unlikely to be declining fast enough to qualify for listing in a more threatened category.

While all porcupine species are considered so, the Philippine porcupine is listed as Vulnerable because the populations of some species are thought to be decreasing due to habitat destruction and hunting pressure. Therefore, despite various enactments to protect wildlife including porcupines around the world, however, porcupines continue to be hunted and killed for their products. Porcupines and culture Porcupines are associated with the oral and traditional expressions as well as social beliefs, rituals and ceremonies in some cultural societies. These are manifested in form of legends, myths, rituals and ceremonies. Below are some cited examples without necessarily referring to specific cultural groupings. Proverbs In Malawi and especially amongst the Tumbuka in the Northern Region, there is a proverb which says “Ukwenela kunogzeka nga ni chinungu, meaning that one has to be prepared for any danger at any time like a porcupine.

14

Myths and superstitions It is believed that porcupines shoot its quills at attackers in defense. The truth of the matter is that either quills are driven in by a sharp swing of the tail or get stuck in whatever touches the porcupines. The quills are loosely embedded in the skin, and may simply be dislodged upon contact with the soft flesh of a predator. Traditional medicine Porcupine parts are used as ingredients in traditional medicine. The quill is normally charred and broken down into powder and made as a nose snuff to stop nose bleeding. Other parts like the skin of a porcupine is used to rub on the wound scars and the wounds get healed. Beliefs about porcupines Porcupine soup is meant to promote lactation, rubbing porcupine oil on the back and chest of new-born infants is believed to alleviate “cramps, porcupine urine is believed to treat hearing defects, porcupine oil as a physic for newborn infants, dropping porcupine fetuses down the dresses of young girls is believed to ensure easy deliveries in future.

www.theeyemw.com

Taboos are described regarding porcupine Avoid eating porcupine brains, believing them to have a negative effect on the body; avoid consuming the tail, fearing it would make them too fat; girls should not eat porcupine during puberty seclusion in order to avoid skin blemishes in spring, the season when porcupines shed their quills; girls should not eat porcupine before four winters passed following the first menses, and widows should avoid eating porcupine for two years after the death of the husband. Porcupines as menace to humanity Porcupines have become a menace to humanity. In Kenya, they are making dens in local graveyards, thereby exhuming human remains, causing great distress. They have also become pests through gnawing bark off trees and eating agricultural crops. These animals carry fleas and ticks and transmit a number of diseases, including rickettsiasis and bubonic plague Significance of porcupines to humanity Porcupines are killed using a variety of hunting methods. Porcupine meat and carcasses are readily available in markets in Africa and Asia. Hunters track them by finding prints or freshly gnawed patches on tree trunks. Once found, the animals are struck with clubs or sticks. If they are hiding in their dens, they are smoked out and clubbed. Sometimes, dogs are used during hunting. Riffles, deadfalls, traps or snares are commonly used to kill porcupines.

Carcasses are prepared differently. A random survey identified the following methods: Water is boiled, poured over the carcass, quills and fur are removed thereafter, or the carcass is skinned and/or the carcass is hung over fire to remove the quills and fur. Several cooking methods have been documented such as smoking the meat, roasting, boiling into stew. Quills are harvested from killed animals. They are also harvested without killing by throwing and covering the porcupine with a blanket, and the whole blanket will get stuck with lots of quills. Quills are valued for their ornament and good-luck charm and other medicinal qualities and are highly priced items in markets around the world. Besides, the hollow rattle quills serve as musical instruments and were once used as containers for gold dust. Additionally, quills are used to make bows, decorate clothing and bark containers, baskets, blankets and mats, as well as pottery; embroidered clothing and decorated bark; embroidered shoes, and draw sap from the maple tree. Despite all these benefits, humans remain the most significant predators of porcupines in the world, shame!

The environment and other factors influencing this need to be looked after otherwise there will be drastic changes that will affect the lives of many people. Environmental degradation is happening every day, everywhere in Malawi. Malawi had a population of 16.36 million in 2013 which has now increased to 17.47 million in 2016 at a growth rate of 3% compared to 2015. http://countrymeters.info/en/Malawi. 82% of people in Malawi live in rural areas. These are places that lack electricity and people must depend on resources… for cooking, washing, 4 tons of trees are used to build 1 house. Population growth is giving lots of pressure of the environment and natural resources which is the backbone of sustainable living. Care for the environment and people need to be our main responsibility. As we are not inheriting the land from our fore fathers but we are borrowing from our own children. The climate is already changing but with effort and integration of environmental programs throughout Malawi we can change the shape of Malawi for the better. ICC Malawi has a focus to do just that.

International Conservation and Cleanup Malawi (ICCM) is a non –profit organization. Our aim is to create healthy environments through the removal of millions of tons of waste. These materials can then transfer through knowledge and skills into reusable beneficial well designed items with an entrepreneurship mind. Plastics, food waste and other litter that affect our health and the environment we live in by polluting areas: rivers, lakes, streams, dams ,land and these are resources for the country. ICCM are looking at the prevention of waste disposal, afforestation, climate smart agriculture and nutrition. Many people in the rural setting are deprived of good environmental knowledge, nutritional diet and education. Much of our society in Malawi is already resourceful, the ancestors knew everything about the land, but it is being lost due to the new generations not acknowledging the importance. Malawi has all the ecological resources: the power of the sun and water, for irrigation and food waste compost can grow all sorts of good nutritious food and the skilled practical people who can work with tools to make anything… Cont. on page 34

The only thing lacking is the practical education to give people confidence to improve and change their approach. We want to promote a society that shares knowledge and education, especially to the people who need it. The methods used worldwide have focused on efficiency of the land. Sustainability is the buzz word of the coming age as industrialization has shown so many problematic signs to the environment. The definitions are very similar when I look at the holistic approach of sustainability DFID’s sustainable livelihoods approach and its framework http://www. glopp.ch/B7/en/multimedia/B7_1_pdf2.pdf Social. Solutions must be people-centered. Getting all networks to work together, fully involved creates ownership and therefore empowerment allowing people to innovate and open up new directions. Natural. Work with the environment, to use the natural elements while ensuring they are being looked after resourcefully, to allow more for future generations to come. Physical. Infrastructure, tools and equipment, ease of maintenance for the future. This adds empowerment and self-reliance. Financial. The solution must be cost effective and respond to the daily wage of the communities in the rural areas to make it available to the people who need it.

Being a sustainable architect we have a design element that includes earth construction and waste innovation devices which are other factors that complement each other. · Designing and building water collection, storage and reuse · Understanding swales to have a maximum efficiency of water usage for all plants · Building well- designed compost toilets using compressed earth dome technology · Collecting waste and reusing these items to make beneficial devices like solar pipes, recycled paper, food compost A well-planned, well- structured holistic sustainable approach is a top priority to empower people to innovate and open up new directions for themselves. We want to use the existing skills and expand the knowledge, with an aim to enhance a resilient community with a continuous enriched cycle for life. Environmental education is now here, be willing to learn about how waste can be an economic benefit. Change methods tomorrow as time is running out. Contact us at iccmalawi@gmail.com

Human. Any ‘sustainable project’ must use existing skills, education and knowledge locally to have an economy so people can gain jobs and independence.

By Dr. Susan Waldron

Tuberculosis (TB) has been around for thousands of years and is even thought to be the cause of death of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamen. In Victorian England 40% of working class deaths were due to TB, known as consumption. The disease was so widespread it actually became fashionable. The thin figure, pale complexion with flushed cheeks and frequent fainting of the consumptive was emulated in the unaffected by the use of corsets and make up. Consumption also featured regularly in novels, music and poetry of the era. The works of Charles Dickens, Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters all had numerous examples of the TB sufferer. Prior to effective treatment active TB was usually a death sentence and took the lives of rich and poor alike. Frederic Chopin, Emily Bronte, Edgar Alan Poe, George Orwell, Eleanor Roosevelt and Vivien Leigh all died of tuberculosis.

TB is caused by a bacteria and is transmitted through close personal contact with a sufferer, usually through coughing. It takes some time to become infected so you are unlikely to catch TB from a minibus ride. Most infections occur through household contacts. Sometimes whole families are infected and for this reason, in Victorian times, the disease was thought to be hereditary. While those living in the developed world can breathe a sigh of relief in the knowledge that TB is now rare and treatable, the situation in the developing world is still much like Victorian England. TB causes 1.5 million deaths per year and 95% of these are in developing countries. 1 in 5 adults deaths in low income countries are due to TB. It is the single most deadly infectious disease in the world. So if TB is now rare in the developed world and is treatable why are millions Cont. on page 60

of people still dying? The answer, yet again, is that TB is a disease of poverty. Poor living conditions, overcrowding and poor personal hygiene all provide the ideal environment for TB transmission. In a healthy host the TB bacterium can be contained and remains dormant in the body, not causing disease. However, if the immune system is suppressed the TB reactivates and most commonly destroys the lungs causing symptoms from fever, lethargy and weight loss, to coughing up phlegm and large amounts of blood. TB can also affect any other part of the body including the skin, bones, internal organs and the brain. Smoking, diabetes and malnutrition can all lower the immune system and cause the reactivation of TB, but the biggest factor in TB deaths in Africa is co-infection with HIV. 1 in 3 of those living with HIV have TB and 1 in 4 will die from the TB. Testing for TB is difficult and unreliable. Traditionally it involves coughing up a sample of sputum to be examined under a microscope. This kind of testing is cheap but almost impossible in children who invariably swallow sputum rather than spitting it out. Newer, more reliable DNA based tests have come on the market but they are very expensive and only exist where funded by donor agencies. There is no simple, reliable test for TB. Treatment of TB is even more difficult! Standard TB treatment involves taking up to four drugs for 6 months. In some parts of the world, particularly in Asia, multi drug resistant TB is widespread and this is a global health threat. Multi drug resistant TB requires an expensive 2 year treatment course of around 15,000 pills and hundreds of painful injections, and the cure rate is only around 50%. Even

60

more frightening is the emergence of Extremely Drug Resistant TB (XDR-TB). Some forms of XDR-TB are resistant to all known antibiotics and this is a death sentence. If XDR-TB spreads globally we might find ourselves in a Charles Dickens novel. There is a vaccination against TB, but it’s not very useful. It does not prevent the most common and deadly form of TB (the one that affects the lungs). In summary, TB is common and deadly. One third of the world’s population is infected with the TB bacterium. It is difficult to diagnose and even more difficult to treat. Living conditions in low income countries encourage the spread of TB and the poorest countries lack the resources to manage programmes for treatment and eradication. Funding to support the countries most affected is inadequate. Failing to eradicate TB in the world’s poorest countries could lead to a resurgence of drug resistant TB worldwide and this is a global public health threat.

ixteen years after first moving to South Luangwa, I find myself lucky to still be living here. I never knew how long I would stay in Luangwa for, but one thing I have learnt about wildlife conservation is to stick it out. Nothing changes over night and few tangible and meaningful achievements are accomplished in a short time. Once off donor funding is beneficial and can get an organization off its feet but ongoing support is essential if we are to make a difference. Like any organization Conservation South Luangwa (CSL) has been through many stages of growth and teething, but now finds itself in a privileged position as a valuable stakeholder in Zambian conservation, specifically in the Luangwa Valley. Spanning over 20,000 km2 of unfenced wildlifemanaged land the South Luangwa Valley holds the vast majority of Zambia’s remaining elephants,

the densest concentration of hippopotamus, the second largest wild dog population in the country, is one of ten lion strong holds remaining in Africa and is home to the beautiful endemic Thornicroft’s giraffe and Cookson’s wildebeest. It is revered as one of the true remaining wilderness areas left in Africa and rightly so. However, like everything in life, there is no free lunch and preserving this area is a great challenge to say the least. Whilst our work includes an array of equally important programs including human wildlife conflict mitigation, wildlife rescue of snared animals through our veterinary unit, chilli farming and community outreach, our core function remains anti-poaching and law enforcement. There is no greater time and need than the present to upscale this support. The rise in elephant and bush meat poaching throughout Africa is being mirrored in Zambia. After experiencing this already in the 1970’s and 1980’s when the poaching of elephants reduced populations to half and black rhino were declared nationally extinct in 1998, we simply cannot allow this to happen again to our recovering population. Whilst poaching, human encroachment and habitat loss continue to threaten existing wildlife populations, our team of 66 community based scouts work in close relationship with the new Department of National Parks and Wildlife Services Cont. on page 78

Cont. from page 77 (DNPWS) and the local Community Resource Boards to protect the national park and its buffer zone. Over the past three and a half years we have apprehended 399 suspects, confiscate 165 illegal firearms, remove 3626 snares and conduct 304 ten day patrols and 469 day patrols. With no permanent aerial presence in the park for the last twenty years, CSL and the Zambian Carnivore Program (ZCP) co-own and cost-share the parks only conservation and research plane which provides much needed aerial support. With 9050 km² of national park and over 10,000 km² of game management area to cover, foot patrols are simply not enough and aerial patrols have become a critical part of our anti-poaching strategy. We realize that poachers and traffickers are increasingly professional in their operational scale and complexity and similarly we are increasing and diversifying our tactics. Two years ago, CSL implemented Zambia’s first wildlife detection dog unit. With three dogs skilfully trained and delivered by our partner in the USA, Working Dogs for Conservation (WD4C) now firmly in place with their six equally well trained Zambian scout / handlers, in a short space of time they have managed to achieve outstanding results and act as a huge deterrent.

In 2010, the idea of a Luangwa Conservation Community Fund was conceived by Andy Hogg from Mfuwe Lodge and the Bush Camp Company, and an insightful group of photographic tour operators in South Luangwa. These dedicated and passionate people had a long term vision of sustainably funding the activities of the South Luangwa Conservation Society and Project Luangwa. They realized that without the wildlife and habitat in Luangwa, they would have no business and a special place would be lost. They also understood that without involving local communities and focusing on education, there would be no hope of protecting Luangwa’s amazing wildlife in future years. Over the past six years generous funding from these operators and their valued clients through the Luangwa Conservation Community Fund (LCCF) ensures that CLS is able to run its programs effectively. The fund now covers

one quarter of our annual budget, an impressive feat after just six years. A fee of $10 on rates over $300, $5 on rates under $299, $2 for room only and $1 for camping has been implemented by the following operators; Mfuwe Lodge and the Bush Camp Company, Flatdogs Camp, Shenton Safaris, Croc Valley Camp, Kafunta River Lodge, Robin Pope Safaris, Remote Africa Safaris, Norman Carr Safaris and Lion Camp. At a time when there is much needed unparalleled media publicity and worldwide focus on reducing elephant and rhino poaching, and conserving Africa’s great parks and other wildlife, we’d like to thank all our supporters for helping us to make sure there are boots on the ground in South Luangwa to help us fight the poaching battle and conserve this extraordinary part of the world.

78

In 2015, a staggering $137,778 was raised for CSL through LCCF. This support came directly from tourists visiting Luangwa and contributing towards the fund.

National Parks inhabitants of the area probably dating back to the Iron Age. These come in form of iron smelting kilns which, despite minimal protection from agents of weather, still stand today! Another relic of early inhabitants of the area is a collection of rock art. This is a group of paintings made thousands of years ago using indigenous painting materials and skills that can be seen in caves, till this day!

All these works of our early ancestors are present in the Solonje area, in the west of the park close to the Zambian border. Miondwe Wildlife Camp is the nearest park station to these treasures. For climbers, Miondwe, Wang’ombe Rumen, Singwe and Chipiri Hills provide a perfect opportunity to stretch a few muscles! Lake Malawi National Park This, the world’s first freshwater National Park and a World Heritage Site, is within the Nankumba peninsula, where the lake breaks into two arms.

Kasungu National Park In the west of the central region, bordering Zambia is Kasungu National Park, an 800 sq mile (2100 sq km) area of natural woodland and bush with occasional stretches of more open grass. Poaching has reduced the number of some species of animals but, contrary to rumours in some quarters, there is still plenty of wildlife to be seen. Elephants and antelopes are common, as are small herds of buffalo and zebra. The cats include both lions and leopards. Inhabiting the bush are hyenas, wild dogs, servals and jackals. There is a significant number of hippos in the lake at Lifupa and as elsewhere in Malawi, the birdwatcher is well catered for.

Cape Maclear is the most well known for tourism part of the park but Maleri Islands, Nkhudzi Hills and Nkhudzi Spit, Mwenya Hills and Monkey Bay as well as Thumbi East are also beautiful locations within the park. It was designated as a National Park in 1980, to protect the diversity of tropical fish living there, some not found anywhere else on earth. The park includes a land area around the cape and bay, as well as the lake and islands up to 100 metres (330ft) off shore. Here is a veritable aquarium of tropical fish providing a colourful kaleidoscopic display. Of the countless thousands of freshwater

This is a park which is relatively easy to drive around. Access to the park has been greatly improved in recent years and it is relatively easy to reach from Lilongwe (approx. 100 miles/160km), Blantyre 450Km.Driving to the park through fields of tobacco, maize, groundnuts also provides an exciting contrast to the city noise that you leave behind. Apart from the game and birds, the park contains evidence of the tools that were used by early

fish, the mbuna cichlids are more abundant and varied here than anywhere else in the world. Boats are available for hire and the fish will feed directly from the hand. Away from the Lake, the park has baboons, antelope and hyrax and of course, there is a great variety of birdlife including fish eagles, cormorants and hamerkops. There is a lot to do for the tourist in Lake Malawi National Park. These include, sunset boat rides, snorkelling, scuba diving, bicycle rides through the village or up the hilly road, swimming, going on traditional fishing trips on dugouts with the locals, learning how to prepare traditional meals and many others….the local guides will brief you about all this! Hiking on the park’s many hills will be an experience you would not forget. The park also has cultural and historical sites like the first Livingstonia Mission site by Scottish Missionaries and their grave site, Mwala wa Mphini (the Rock with natural tattoos),the cross painting, Otter point and the Ilala ship yard at Monkey Bay, where Malawi’s oldest sailing ship starts its journeys up north and back. Lengwe National Park This park is 350 sq miles (900 sq km) in extent at only an hours drive (80 km) from Blantyre. The vegetation is thicket, with some deciduous woodland and denser tree growth along the stream courses. In the eastern area a network of

Lengwe is quite arid outside the rainy season and many of the water courses become dry sandy channels. This aids game viewing because it forces the animals to use the few pools that are permanent supplies of water. There are hides and man-made pools in the eastern area of the park just a short distance from the main gate. The advantages of the hides are that one may see a mix of wildlife together at the water-hole. The park is the most northern place in the world to find indigenous Nyala. Other antelope like the magnificent kudu also roam the park as do common duiker, the small Livingstone’s suni, bushbuck and impala. Baboon, vervet and blue monkeys, bush-baby, warthog, bush pig and buffalo are also seen in the park. In total there are five species of primates. Predators are leopard and hyena. The birdlife of Lengwe is attractive with about 300 or so species recorded. The government tourist lodge was renovated and refurbished in 2003 and now operates as Nyala Lodge. Depending on rainfall other than road leading to Nyala Lodge some of the other roads in the park are inaccessible in January or February. Game viewing can be done on foot using either guides from Nyala Lodge or scouts from the Lengwe National Park office. Liwonde National Park Although only 220 sq miles (580 sq km). It is about 100 miles (160 km) north of Blantyre and only more than half that distance from the hotels on the southern lakeshore. Additionally, game viewing is enhanced because the River Shire flows along its western border. Wildlife includes large numbers of elephants and the river attracts countless hippos and crocodiles. Antelope include kudu, sable and bushbuck. There are lions, leopards and more recently, the black rhino has been re-introduced into the rhino sanctuary, currently there are 16 rhinos in the sanctuary which are planned to be released sometime in the near future.

National Parks Birdlife is exceptionally varied. Pel’s fishing owl is often seen at dusk along the river’s edge. There is accommodation in the way of Mvuu Lodge and nearby Mvuu Camp. To reach the riverside lodge, visitors can approach by road and then be ferried across the river, they can drive through the park or they can use a pre-arranged boat from Liwonde town. In the southern region of the park, close to town, there is also accommodation available at Liwonde Safari Camp and Bushman’s Baobabs. There is an airstrip, served by scheduled and charter flights. Nyika National Park In 1965 the Nyika National Park became the first certified park in Malawi. Nyika is Malawi’s largest park with an area of no less than 1250 sq miles (3200 sq km). It extends across the great plateau which is essentially a granitic dome and its environment is like none other in Africa. The name, Nyika, means “where the water comes from” and it is, indeed, one of Malawi’s most important catchment areas. The rolling scenery is at its best in the rainy season when over 200 types of orchid are in flower. The grasslands of Nyika are also rich in wildflowers in other seasons. Nyika is wonderful for trekking, with the route from Chilinda in the centre of the park to Livingstonia Mission and then eventually to the lake at Chitimba! A number of other walking trails are also possible just within the plateau, ranging in length from a night to three nights long. Mountain biking, walking and driving day safaris, as well as more conventional 4x4 excursions are available. The montane vegetation attracts large numbers of antelope from the diminutive duiker to eland and roan. Zebra are common. The park has one of the highest densities of leopard in central Africa and there are a number of species of smaller mammals such as warthog and bush pig. Elephants and buffalo usually keep to the lower ground on the northern edge of the park but elephants have been seen on the high plateau, on a number of occasions. For the birdwatcher, the park has a lot to offer: over 400 species have been recorded. The rare Denham’s bustard and the wattled crane are among those to be seen, as is the red-winged

82

francolin - endemic to Nyika. There is such a lot to see and do in the vast park: waterfalls, a Neolithic rock shelter, trout fishing and even a ‘magic lake’ are just some of the attractions. There is an airstrip for fly-in safaris. Michuiru Nature Sanctuary Michiru Nature Sanctuary is situated 9 km from Blantyre and is part of Michiru Mountain. It is a beautiful area of 12.5 sq. km. which consists of brachystegia woodland and some riverine forest. There is wildlife present namely hyaena, bushbuck, common duiker, porcupine, civet cat, genet, hyrax and Cape hare. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded. For visitors there are an Education / Interpretation Centre, a Picnic Spot with barbeque and six trails of varying length including one to the Peak (1470 m) affording superb views as far as Zomba Mountain to the east and the Shire Valley across to the Kirk Range in the west. Michiru Nature Sanctuary is managed by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife and receives huge support from the Blantyre Branch of the Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi. The Society maintains the trails and trail signage, repairs bridges, provides a snare bounty and has obtained funding for eleven scout houses. This lovely area provides a haven of peace away from the bustle and noise of Blantyre City and is the only mountain around Blantyre that still has indigenous forest and some wildlife.

Wildlife Reserves Inside Majete there are three different types of accommodation. Situated around a serene floodlit waterhole that attracts a variety of wildlife, Thawale Lodge is a peaceful haven from which to experience Majete. Completely unfenced, the camp is regularly visited by wildlife. Thawale Lodge offers six double and twin tented chalets all en-suite and each with its own private veranda overlooking the waterhole. There is also a family chalet with two onsuite bedrooms, veranda and living room. In the north of the reserve, Robin Pope Safaris operate in a private concession and run the exclusive up market Mkulumadzi Lodge.

Majete Wildlife Reserve Majete Wildlife Reserve is a 70,000 hectare tract of pristine bush in the southern region of Malawi, one hour’s drive from Blantyre. In 2003 African Parks, in agreement with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, took over the management of the Reserve. To date, over 142km of fencing has been completed around Majete and its total length is patrolled on a daily basis. In addition, 250km of road network has been constructed. The most significant change which has really seen Majete come back to life is the reintroduction of species previously eradicated by poaching. Since 2003 over 2,500 animals have been reintroduced from fourteen species including elephant, black rhino, leopard, buffalo, eland and sable, and these have increased to over 10,000 animals today. Lion were re-introduced in 2012 making Majete one of the only reserves in Malawi where the BIG FIVE can be viewed all year round.

The community camp-site is equipped with a thatched bar and dining space, barbeque area, toilets and hot solar showers and all revenue goes directly to the communities running it. Near to the entrance of the gate the Heritage Centre includes a curio shop, Environment Education Centre and a swimming pool is being built. There is the Mwembezi restaurant which overlooks a water hole where animals come to drink where a variety of Malawian and western cuisine is offered as well as snacks, cold drinks, beer and tea and coffee. For more information about Majete Wildlife Reserve, please visit: www.african-parks.org or Email: thawale@african-parks.org Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve The Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve, located at the southernmost tip of Malawi, is over 137sq km of pristine wilderness, boasting biodiversity unrivalled by other parks in the region. As a visitor you can explore this magnificent reserve in your own vehicle or go on a guided drive in one of the safari vehicles accompanied by a professional wildlife guide. Other activities include guided bush walks or bird walks, boat trips on the Shire River, Behind the Scenes conservation tour, hiking to the top of Mabele Hills, visiting the Kapachira Falls and view spots or a visit to one of our local communities. There are viewing hides built over water holes and near the Shire River at Mvuu spot where wildlife and birds can be seen and picnics taken. There are also shelters for picnics at the Kapachira Falls and on Hall Martin Road.

Wildlife Reserves With open savannah and magnificent rocky outcrops that allow 360 degree views over the mopane woolands, Mwabvi is an oasis of tranquillity. Wildlife includes kudu, buffalo, impala, warthogs, sable, steenbok, samango monkeys and baboons. There are also over 350 species of bird, including the protected ground hornbill and numerous spectacular native and migratory species, making it a paradise for avid birdwatchers. Day trips are available and it is possible to camp close to Mwabvi River Gorge Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve Nkhotakota, to the east of the region and near the Lake, is one of the two large game areas in the central region. Its vast 700 sq miles (1800 sq km) is of rugged terrain crossed by a number of rivers, which tumble down the edge of the escarpment as they make their way to the Lake. Most of the reserve is miombo woodland with large patches of tall grasses and 40 Ha. of evergreen forest on the summit of Chipata Mountain. This is a wonderful example of true wilderness, which particularly attracts those who wish to enjoy walking safaris, fishing and climbing. Access to the reserve is possible with saloon cars during the dry season, but within the reserve, walking is the preferred mode of travelling because there are few roads or driveable tracks. The range of mammals is as good as anywhere in Malawi although the environment makes viewing difficult. Elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard are all present. Roan and sable, kudu and waterbuck and a wide variety of smaller antelope, as well as zebra, all occur within the reserve boundaries. The Bua River is home to a larger number of crocodiles. Birdlife is prolific with giant kingfishers, Boehm’s bee-eaters, finfoot and palm nut vultures among over 200 recorded species.

Vwaza Wildlife Reserve Vwaza Wildlife Reserve, an area of marsh and plain, with a few rocky outcrops, is all of 400 sq miles (1000 sq km) and lies along the Zambian border north-west of Mzuzu. The reserve has a wonderful mix of vegetation: forest and grassland, thin woodland and marsh. It is this rich habitat which attracts a splendid range of birdlife. Nearly 300 species of birds have been recorded including stork, heron and the white-faced tree duck. Herds of thirty or forty elephants are regularly to be seen and there are large numbers of hippos. Lake Kazuni, near the main entrance to the reserve is famous for its hippos. Buffalo are present in the reserve but their roaming habits make their sightings less easy to predict. Kazuni Safari Camp offer accommodation in this area. Just outside the reserve is the community-owned Chigwere Cultural Lodge, an initiative by the community under the guidance of the Department of Parks and Wildlife. The intention is to make sure communities take part in the tourism activities in the area to ensure that they economically benefit from eco-tourism. At the cultural lodge tourists experience the true rural life of Kazuni. Traditional dances, food, and

On 22nd July 2015, African Parks signed an agreement with government acting through the Department of Parks and Wildlife under Ministry of Information, Tourism and Culture to manage, finance and develop Nkhota Kota Wildlife Reserve for a period of 25 years on a Public Private Partnership Agreement. Africa Parks is building a 15,000 hectare sanctuary to accommodate 500 elephants and several other antelopes; putting in place a network of roads that will cater for the management of the reserve and tourism.

Wildlife Reserves all other ways of life in Malawi’s rural north are available at this village. Access to the reserve is largely by road either from Mzuzu, the Northern city of Malawi or from Tanzania, passing through Rumphi District Headquarters or from Nyika National Park. Visitors can also fly in through the grass surfaced landing strip, for lighter aircraft. Lilongwe Wildlife Reserve Not many capital cities can boast such stunning habitat right at their heart and this 180 hectare reserve is undoubtedly a must-see for all visitors passing through. The sprawling acacia combretum woodlands are the last example in the Central Region, and they are home to a wide variety of wildlife from antelopes, wild pigs and hyena to over 200 species of bird. The reserve is cut in half by Kenyatta Road, on one side of which is Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary, where guided walks and fantastic early morning birding are on offer. On the other you will find Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, an internationally accredited sanctuary home to around 200 rescued wild animals. Guided sanctuary tours are available every hour from 8am to 5pm, or you can take yourself along the 4km or so of walking trails that wind alongside the river before stopping off at their new café for lunch. Kuti Wildlife Reserve Kuti Wildlife Reserve is a stunning 2000 hectare reserve located close to Salima, less than 1,5hrs from Lilongwe and half an hour from the lake. Set up as a wildlife reserve in 2005, Kuti aims to protect the habitats and wildlife within the reserve. The reserve is a haven to a huge variety of freeroaming wildlife, with large mammals such as giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, sable, kudu and impala through to primates, reptiles and hundreds of bird species. There are no large predators or dangerous game in Kuti, so you can explore and take in your surroundings at your own pace on foot or by bike, without the need for a vehicle or scout.

Losing milk teeth is normal, but losing your permanent teeth is not. Gum disease is the commonest cause of tooth loss in adults worldwide, and affects fifty percent of adults over the age of 30. Most often patients don’t even know they have it until its too late. Generally gum disease is the body’s response to plaque. Plaque is the yellow sticky film of bacteria mixed with proteins that develops naturally on all tooth surfaces as soon as they erupt into the oral cavity. The healthy mouth depends on maintaining an environment in which these bugs coexist without damaging the tissues surrounding it. The longer plaque is left on a tooth surface, the thicker and denser it becomes, incorporating more and more virulent/damaging bacteria. This, if left over some time can ultimately lead to the loss of the gum and bone tissue supporting the teeth resulting in loose teeth, which either fall out or have to be removed due to pain and infection. The proper name for gum disease is Periodontitis/ Periodontal Disease and in its early form it is known as Gingivitis. Gingivitis Gingivitis is used to describe red, swollen gums that bleed easily. There is usually little or no discomfort at this stage. This is often caused by inadequate oral hygiene whereby plaque is incompletely removed from the teeth. The good news is that gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and good oral home care, the gums will heal very quickly. The bad news is if gingivitis is left untreated, it can advance to periodontitis and can eventually lead to tooth loss and other health problems. Periodontitis With time, untreated gingivitis can lead to further

damage by plaque spreading and growing below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums. The toxins stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the body in essence turns on itself, and the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. Gums separate from the teeth, forming pockets (spaces between the teeth and gums) that become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. Often, this destructive process has very mild symptoms. Eventually, teeth can become loose and may have to be removed. Research has shown that the inflammation from gum disease can actually cause heart disease, diabetes and other conditions like strokes. Pregnant women who have periodontal disease may be more likely to have a baby that is born too early and too small. Signs Of Gum Disease 1. Red, swollen or tender gums 2. Bleeding while brushing, flossing, or eating hard food 3. Blood on your pillow 4. Gums that are receding or shrinking making teeth look longer than before 5. Loose teeth 6. Pus between your gums and teeth 7. Persistent bad breath 8. A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite 9. A change in the fit of partial dentures If you notice any of the above, make sure you see your dentist as soon as possible. Gum disease is often silent, meaning symptoms may not appear until an advanced stage of the disease.

Gum disease can affect children too, so it is important to look out for the same telltale signs in kids. Remember to establish good oral hygiene habits from a young age. What Causes Gum Disease? The main cause of gum disease is plaque, but other factors affect the health of your gums too. SHISHA-SMOKING-TOBACCO USE: Tobacco use in ANY FORM is linked with many serious illnesses such as cancer, lung disease and heart disease. Users also are at increased risk for periodontal disease. GENETICS: Research has indicated that some people may be genetically susceptible to gum disease. Despite aggressive oral care habits, these people may be more likely to develop periodontal disease. STRESS: Stress also is a risk factor for periodontal disease. Research demonstrates that stress can make it more difficult for the body to fight off infection, including periodontal diseases. MEDICATIONS: Some drugs, such as oral contraceptives, anti-depressants, anti-epileptics and certain heart medicines, can affect your oral health. Remember to inform your Dentist of any medication you are taking. OTHER SYSTEMIC DISEASES: Other systemic diseases that interfere with the body’s inflammatory system may worsen the condition of the gums. These include heart disease, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. It is also known that poor nutrition can worsen the condition of your gums.

1.Brush your teeth! Brushing your teeth twice daily, once in the morning and before going to bed. Make sure you angle your toothbrush at 45° towards the gum margin. Make small circular movements with your toothbrush to effectively clean the gum margins without damaging your gums. Don’t forget to brush your tongue; bugs love to hide there. 2.Floss/Interdental cleaning. Plaque accumulates on all surfaces of your teeth. Regular tooth brushing is unable to reach in-between your teeth. Better then flossing, is the use of specialist interdental brushes that come in various sizes to suit the size of the gaps. These should be used once a day to maintain optimum oral hygiene. 3. Regular Dental Checkups. Your Dentist will thoroughly examine your mouth and check for gum disease as part of the normal assessment. You will be advised if treatment is needed and the best recall interval to check on your oral health status. Remember the earlier the detection, the better the outcome. Treatment for Gum Disease Scaling and root planing is a careful removal of plaque and hardened plaque (calculus/tartar) from deep gum pockets. This treatment is sometimes followed by adjunctive therapy such as local delivery of antibiotics as needed on a case-by-case basis. The majority of patients will require regular cleaning to maintain their healthy gums. Remember, “A healthy smile is a happy smile!” Keep your gums healthy with a visit to your Dentist.

How Can I Prevent Periodontal Disease? Luckily, periodontal disease can be preventable by undertaking the following 3 steps:

Malawi has a fairly conservative system when it comes to foreign currency and limitations. As a foreigner you can bring any amount of money in and out. As a resident you can only take out what you purchased from the bank or bureaus. There is a wide array of banks and forex to choose from, with several international banks represented. Through Western Union and Moneygram you can receive any amount, however you can only send out the equivalent of $88 ($100 less deductions) per week. To exchange foreign currency through a forex bureau you are allowed up to $5000 per trip, for this amount be sure to go to one of your larger bureaus. You must have a copy of your passport for any foreign currency transaction. Through a bank, you can buy: $5,000 business, $4,000 medical and $3,000 holiday by the Reserve Bank of Malawi. However, the bank uses its criteria to sell excess travel allowances on case-by-case basis, again copy of your passport is required. Credit cards are not widely accepted and where they are, with large hotels, tour operators and selected restaurants, hefty surcharges are common. Cash advances by credit and debit, visa and master cards are offered through Stanbic and all other authorized dealers through their network of ATM’s. There may be a limitation on what you can draw in a day. The Money Bureau and Victoria forex bureau accept visa and mastercard cards; again you must have your passport. The most accepted currencies are US dollars, Sterling, Euro and Rands. The Money Bureau Ltd is the only forex bureau that deals with regional currencies with the exception of the Zimbabwean dollar. Please bear in mind any bank or bureau will not accept US dollar notes which have the smaller president’s head, notes before 1990, some bureaus may change them but at a lesser rate. Also, you will get a lesser rate for $5 and $1 denominations of dollar bills.

By Fran Read The first half of one of history’s largest elephant translocations drew to a close in the wooded hills of Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve in Malawi on the 13th August 2016. Over the course of six weeks in July and August, 261 elephants were relocated to Nkhotakota from Liwonde National Park, along with more than 1,590 individuals of game species like zebra, sable, and antelope which were moved from both Liwonde and Majete Wildlife Reserve all with the goal of repopulating Nkhotakota. The first half of this operation was tremendously successful and drew the world’s attention to conservation in Malawi. The 500 Elephants initiative will repopulate Nkhotakota after years of poaching, which had decimated its wildlife and reduced its elephant herd from 1,500 to fewer than 100 individuals. Since taking management responsibility there in August of 2015, African Parks has overhauled law enforcement, built a 78-kilometer electric ‘sanctuary’ fence for the elephants within the park’s perimeter to reduce human-wildlife conflict, provided local employment and worked with 13 Chiefs spanning 534 villages in the four bordering districts of the park. The translocation also provides an important opportunity to relieve human-wildlife conflict and pressure on natural habitats from the high density of elephants in Liwonde and Nkhotakota. Translocations are becoming increasingly necessary to combat the enormous challenges caused by habitat loss and fragmentation, and human-wildlife conflict. Sobering results were recently released from the Great Elephant Census, a continent-wide elephant survey in which African Parks participated in sharing data from parks under management in Chad, DRC and Malawi. The census counted approximately 350,000 savanna elephants (reduced from over five million a century ago) and indicated a 30 percent decline in populations between 2007 and 2014 in 15 of the 18 countries surveyed. This picture stands in contrast to the optimism emanating from the 500 Elephants translocation, which demonstrates the opportunities

that flow from well-managed protected areas that can be a refuge for increasing populations of elephants. In its action to restore viable elephant populations and ecological integrity to the three extraordinary reserves in Malawi, 500 Elephants ignites a story of hope and possibility for regional efforts to conserve the African elephant. While the newly translocated animals, including the 261 elephants, sable antelope, buffalo, waterbuck, impala, warthog, eland and zebra, adapt to their new surroundings in Nkhotakota, teams of rangers patrol the sanctuary to monitor their security and well-being. In addition, rangers are utilizing VHF collars that were fitted to 27 elephants to track the movements of the herds and bulls. Now several weeks since the conclusion of the first half of the translocation, the rehomed animals are reported to be in good condition and adjusting well to the woodlands of Nkhotakota, where in spite of the drought gripping much of the subcontinent adequate resources and water are available. And in the meantime, African Parks is gearing up to recommence the journey of 500 Elephants with plans to start the second half of the translocation in Malawi’s winter months of 2017. African Parks is a non-profit conservation organisation that takes on the complete responsibility for the rehabilitation and long-term management of national parks and protected areas in partnership with governments and local communities. With the most amount of area under protection for any one NGO in Africa, African Parks manages 10 national parks and protected areas in seven countries covering six million hectares: Malawi, Zambia, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Chad. elcome to the inaugural edition of the official annual magazine of the Rotary Club of Lilongwe. Rotary Club of Lilongwe takes pride in being the biggest club in District No. 9210, which comprises Malawi, Northern Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Rotary brings together the kind of people who step forward to take on important issues for local communities worldwide. True to the spirit of Rotary, members of the Rotary Club of Lilongwe (RCL), hail from a wide range of professional backgrounds such as medical doctors, lawyers, engineers, architects, artists, entrepreneurs, and executives. RCL has connected these unique perspectives, and helped leverage its members’ expertise to improve lives of the less fortunate in Malawi through implementation of various projects such as drilling boreholes, provision of medical services and equipment, provision of learning materials, building school blocks. I commend my fellow Rotarians who have contributed their time, energy and passion to implement these life-changing projects in local communities across the country. Indeed, Rotarians have demonstrated service above self, which is the official motto of Rotary. The theme for Rotary International this year is “Serving Humanity”. Rotary projects are supposed to be in line with the following five key areas of focus: peace and conflict resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy and economic and community development. In line with this theme, the members of RCL are working on projects such as In-door Residual Spray (IRS) against malaria in Munthama, Kasungu, drilling of Boreholes in Dowa and Mchinji, construction of school blocks within and outside Lilongwe, distribution of learning materials in secondary schools within Lilongwe, among others. In December every year, members of RCL host a party for orphans in various centres in Lilongwe. The RCL raises its funds through contributions by members, global grants from The Rotary Foundation and other donations from people and institutions of good will. Therefore, the publication of this magazine is not really to showcase the projects that RCL has done but rather to inform the general public of the plight of the less privileged and help inculcate a culture of service above self in serving humanity. I am wishing you a happy reading and looking forward to welcoming you at the RCL fellowship, which take place very Tuesday at the Bingu International Conference Centre, Lilongwe. e are 1.2 million neighbors, friends, and community leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world. Rotary International has 333,000 clubs divided over 200 countries. Our differing occupations, cultures, and countries give us a unique perspective. Our shared passion for service helps us accomplish the remarkable. WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT? Our distinct point of view and approach gives us unique advantages: • We see differently: Our multidisciplinary perspective helps us see challenges in unique ways. • We think differently: We apply leadership and expertise to social issues—and find unique solutions. • We act responsibly: Our passion and perseverance create lasting change. • We make a difference at home and around the world: Our members can be found in your community and across the globe.

resources and partners, we help clubs focus their service efforts in promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, supporting education, and growing local economies. ROTARY IN MALAWI Malawi falls in the Rotary District 9210, which also includes the following countries Zambia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe with 63 active clubs, of which only five are in Malawi. Rotary Malawi has an active membership of over 250 Rotarians, all committed to serving humanity in 2016-17 Rotary year. The first Rotary club ever established in Malawi was Blantyre in 1955, this was then followed by the chartering of Limbe Club in 1965. In 1970 the Rotary Club of Lilongwe (RCL) was chartered. RCL subsequently helped charter both Mzuzu in 2002 and Bwaila in 2007.

HOW DO WE WORK? Our impact starts with our members—people who work tirelessly with their clubs to solve some of our communities’ toughest challenges. Their efforts are supported by Rotary International, our member association, and The Rotary Foundation, which turns generous donations into grants that fund the work of our members and partners around the world. Rotary is led by our members—responsible leaders who help to carry forward our organization’s mission and values in their elected roles. HOW DID WE GET HERE? We’ve been making history and bringing our world closer together for over 100 years. Since forming in 1905, we’ve taken on some of the world’s toughest challenges and helped a wide range of international and service organizations—from the UN to Easter Seals—get started. HOW DO WE USE OUR FUNDS? Responsible leadership means more than just doing good work—it means making the most out of every donation we receive. WHAT CAUSES DO WE SUPPORT? We have identified specific causes to target to maximize our local and global impact. At the same time, we understand that each community has its own unique needs and concerns. The Rotary Club of Lilongwe (RCL) was founded in 1970, making it the first Rotary club in Lilongwe. In 1990, the word ‘male’ was deleted from the constitution of the club, effectively allowing ladies to become full-fledged members of RCL. The following RCL had its first woman member, who two years later was blessed with a baby! Seven years later, in 2000 the Club inducted its first female president. Many years later, the club has continued to grow in strength and to leverage resources of the members and others within and outside of Malawi, to achieve so much by way of assistance to the most needy in the country. RCL is involved in numerous projects as well as fundraising events, whose proceeds are directly channelled to schools, hospitals, local charities and other non-profit making bodies. Some notable initiatives undertaken include the following: Medical missions. This involved a visit from medical doctors from India who performed surgeries on hundreds of clients and treated thousands more Malawians from under-privileged backgrounds, all for free. End of year orphan parties. For over twenty years RCL has held end of year parties for orphans, where all kinds of gifts are also presented. Tree planting. In order to help fight deforestation, RCL collaborates with like-minded organisations and supports campaigns and events to raise awareness about the dangers. Through such events, thousands of trees have been planted. Support to schools. In conjunction with other Rotary Clubs, RCL has built classroom blocks, donated learning materials and held educational talks. Hospital bed donations and repairs. Every year RCL goes out to hospitals in and around

120

Lilongwe to assess the need for and quality of beds, with a view to replace, rehabilitate and/or provide new ones. Numerous hospitals have benefitted from this gesture. Our main fundraising activities include the following: Bed Race. This is an event that attracts a number of teams that compete in a bed race. Each team is composed of up to five (5) pushers plus one ‘patient’ who must remain on the bed for the duration of the race. A team is typically sponsored by a Malawi based company, whose logos and promotional livery are clearly displayed on the bed. The judges of the contest use speed and originality in their criteria to determine the winning team. Golf Day. This is tournament is open to nonRotarians and is held on a weekend. Competing teams pay a participation fee. In addition, companies may sponsor a participating team or two. The bulk of the proceeds are channelled towards the end of year orphan party. Our meetings. Our meetings are held every Tuesday, lunch time (from 12.15 to 1.30pm), at the President’s Hotel. Occasionally the meetings are held as cocktails evenings, from 6.00 – 8.00pm. The meetings are usually full of fun as well as informative, as we have guest speakers in attendance at some of the meetings. Our sergeant at arms extracts fines from members for various ‘misdemeanours’ (which may include sporting colours of losing or winning soccer team; wearing a wrong and/or brightly coloured tie; laughing too hard etc) as well as gives members the opportunity to contribute to the coffers using ‘cross fines’. This entails asking the ‘fined’ member to contribute a stipulated amount to the club. In addition, members are allowed to express their happiness at an eventuality during the fellowship or elsewhere, this is known as ‘happy kwacha’. This allows members to contribute to the coffers any amount for merely being happy.

Distribution of school Materials, desks and building of school blocks With support from Rotary Clubs all around the world, the Rotary Club of Lilongwe donates office blocks, desks, science equipment and numerous learning materials to learners in schools in and around Lilongwe. Emphasis is placed on the most needy learners and in addition the continued maintenance the donated equipment and related immovable assets for subsequent users. Ethics Program The Ethics program espouses the importance of understanding the basic tenets as well as showing an aptitude for among young learners in Malawi. The Rotary Club of Lilongwe conducts an Essay Contest that is open to Malawian learners. Three prize winners are then selected out of the entries, and these go home with substantial contributions to their school fees! The prize giving ceremony, which is graced by Rotarians, their Anns and guests, is then held centrally in Lilongwe. Beds and Mattress Donation Bwaila Hospital Annually we organize the fun bed race and the proceeds go to repairs of beds, new beds and mattresses at Bwaila Hospital. DISTRICT CONFERENCE (DISCON) In 2016 the DISCON was held in Mangochi, along the beautiful Lake Malawi shores. The 4 day conference was a vibrant, interesting and meaningful success!

122

Preparations are underway for the next DISCON, which will be held in Victoria Falls town, Zimbabwe in May 2017. Trainings and Seminars Throughout the year training and seminars are organized for Rotarians to educate them on the ins & outs of Rotary and to build-up leadership skills thereby supporting Rotarians to excel. Progressive dinner A night full of food and laughter. Rotarians and Ann’s flagged it off with starters at PP Haroon’s Residence, and then moved on to the main course at Rotarian Lowry’s Residence, and topped it off with healthy servings of dessert and drinks at Rotarian Eveline’s lodge. This all took place in one night full of laughter and banter, a night worth remembering! Vocational services Rotarians are Professionals and business men and women from many different vocations such as lawyers, accountants, teachers, poets, hoteliers, contractors, architects, economists, farmers and many more. During career talks Rotarians inform and motivate the youth and show them the possibilities life has to offer. Tree planting During this annual event Rotarians plant trees in order to fight deforestation and create awareness on the importance of our trees in Malawi. Orphan End of Year Party At this event, numerous food and other items are packed and distributed to orphanages in and around Lilongwe, by the members. For example, in 2015 wetreated up to 2,762 orphans in 11 orphanages to a great party of sumptuous meals and assorted gifts! Bed Race The competition is open to all Malawians and it is sponsored by various companies. The proceeds from this event are then used to repair and replace beds and mattresses in hospitals in and around Lilongwe. This is another day packed with fun! Golf Tournament Every year the Rotary Club of Lilongwe organizes a golf tournament, which is played at the Lilongwe Golf Course. Each team that enters to play in the tournament is required to pay a set fee and some teams are sponsored by companies.

This project benefitted patients from the underprivileged sections of society from the areas around Lilongwe, as well as other regions of Malawi. Patients who presented with problems ranging from tumors, fractures (including dental with displacements), hernia, gynecological complications, kidney Stones, orthopedic complications, burns/deformities, and other problems were attended to. The doctors successfully performed over 300 operations and saw more than 2,000 out-patients. The intention is to extend this service to as many Malawians as can be possibly be helped, which may go into the hundreds. The positive off-spin of this visit was that the host doctors will continue to treat and assist patients with the new skills and confidence gained during the hands-on experience and confidence building sessions. Similar subsequent missions are envisaged, so watch the space!

Although these are called tournaments, it is in reality a day of fun filled golfing adventure as it pits golfers of all handicaps. Winners of the tournament are rewarded and the rest of proceeds then are channeled to various Rotary projects in an around Lilongwe. Medical Mission In partnership with the Rotary Club of Chandigarh, India and the Ministry of Health hosted a Medical mission at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) 30 Medical specialists, 22 of whom are practicing Medical doctors specialising in various areas including General surgery, Dermatology, Gynaecology, Dentistry, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesia and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) visited the country.
