Decorating is so often about injecting life into snoozy situations. As Editorial Director Joanna Saltz finds out, these five Dallas designers are all about having some fun.

Jo Saltz: OK, let’s jump in. When a room is feeling bare and boring, what’s your go-to for making it more fun?
all the time, but mine would never look like that. For me it’s more about the placement of things, rather than color.
Monica Wilcox: Art, art, art—original art. Find an artist to create something individual, unique, one-of-a-kind. Introduce your clients to art, and you will never ever go wrong.
Jean Liu: I’ve had clients completely change the way they felt about a room just because we took the existing pieces of furniture and tweaked the layout of them.
Brant McFarlain: I like to arrange furniture in a way that’s not typical. You get architectural plans and it seems to be the same layout
Amy Berry: Right. And there needs to be a playfulness, like, “You can live here! Yeah, you can move that chair, it’s OK!”

Denise McGaha: It’s our job to take this perfect little bow that interior design has been tied with and kind of blow it up. Jo: Is it more fun to have tons of money for a project, or to have to get creative on a budget?
For the daughter of some adventurous clients, Amy turned an empty closet into a child-size dollhouse.
Amy: It’s fun to have a fun client. With one client, there was a closet where I said, “We should make it a dollhouse!” They have a little girl, so we did a whole hidden bookcase she can walk into. There’s a little light fixture, a little kitchen. The dad was like, “What are you doing to my closet?” And I was like, “It will be fine, and we can turn it back into a closet later.” That’s how trusting they were. Jean: Totally agree. The clients who trust you—who are so trusting they don’t even check in with you—can make a project come in a lot smoother, and

It’s 5,000 square feet, he’s a bachelor, and he just trusted me to do my thing. Denise: Is that your perfect client profile?

I was like, “Let’s move this out!” Denise: People get to see themselves in a completely different light when you change their interiors. Brant: Well, now he’s cool. Jean: Ha! At the same time, we’ve had some great things
come out of the tightest budgets. We’re working on the new showroom for KOCH, a clothing line. This project does not have a crazy budget, so every single fabric we’re using is actually a remnant from their current collections. Monica: That’s amazing!

Jo: What is the most fun part of your job? [Note to transcriber: We are now two glasses of wine deep.] Denise: I love presenting to the client and make a really big deal out of it. We serve their favorite treats, and I know what they like to drink. I had a client last week say, “Oh my God, do you have people who are addicted to this like plastic surgery?” Then she looked at her husband and said, “When do we get to do the next part of the house?” Brant: I mean, I do like presenting—but not as much as you do. Denise: I love it.

Monica: For me, the most fun part is definitely the reveal. We have bets in my office on who’s going to cry—our goal is actually to make people cry! We do everything we can. We light candles. We even have music. Denise: It’s an experience! Monica: Yes! A celebration. Amy: It’s kind of your moment to be like, “I was listening.” Jean: The most fun for me personally is the process. I love working with the different trades, because I think that they’re the most unsung part of any project. They’re the ones who have to get it done! Jo: So true. And what a diverse mix of answers. Denise: We’re Texans! We’re individuals.

How to Build a Bunk Room
Rather than just putting two queen beds in this guest room, Studio McGee added twin bunks crossing overhead to maximize sleep space.
SECURE THE BUNKS to the wall studs, and also anchor them to a corner post that goes all the way to the ceiling, if needed. And make sure top railings are at least 12 inches high, so nobody falls out! MEASURE THE SPACE before you start building. Leave at least 40 inches between the top bunk’s mattress and the ceiling, so you don’t hit your head, and two inches on either side, so your kids you can make the bed.

Any Room Can Be a Playroom This used to be a wine cellar. Now, the kids have moved in. By Hadley Keller

UCKED DOWN -
stairs in a San Francisco home, you’ll find the envy of the neighborhood.
“The homeowners wanted their kids to have a place to goof off while they have a party upstairs,”
explains the designer, Regan Baker. The couple had seen the adventure-themed, tented kids’ room Baker dreamed up for a show house and enlisted her to transform their wine-storage room into something their three kids would love. It’s now known as the Romp Room. “The idea was to engage and activate the space,” says the designer. Wine racks became color-blocked art-supply storage, an unused wall was turned into a climbing wall, and soft, modular furniture was brought in to allow for (gentle) roughhousing. And yet, the space still feels orderly and refined. After all, says Baker, “they want it to be a room their kids can grow up in.” Color us jealous. 22

isn’t exactly a sprawling manse, so when we started drawing up floor plans with our architect, we wanted to make sure that every bit of square footage had a use. On the second floor, we decided to tear out a cramped bathroom so we could move the door to the master bedroom, which didn’t have a wall long enough for a king-size bed. That left us with some extra room in the upstairs landing—just right for an office.

Anchoring the area is a reproduction Baker secretary, which serves double duty as a desk and storage cabinet. (I love how the mirrored doors reflect light from the window and make the space look even bigger.) And a consignment store chair, which I painted white and reupholstered, can be tucked into a corner when not in use. Villalobos Design. “To me, material and texture are more important than color and pattern,” he says. “Even if a fabric seems plain, when you add another textile and then another, it all adds up to create something interesting. It’s about understanding the room as a whole.”

How to Design a Nursery Suite in 90 Days It was August when photographer Gray Malin and his husband, Jeff Richardson, learned they were expecting twins in the late fall, so they planned a shower and hired a designer to speed-decorate. Start the clock.... By Shoko Wanger

MONTHS OUT The first concept board was complete within a few weeks. Malin and Berry agreed that the rooms would be clean and classic, designed to grow up with the children. They would also feature Malin’s fine art photography. “I wanted a space that

would feel undeniably happy,” he says. “My brand is about bringing joy to other people, and I wanted to bring joy to my family with this special project.”

MONTHS OUT Berry placed rush orders for furniture, timing each shipment to arrive at the same time. She opted for a mix: store-bought pieces from retailers like Serena & Lily and Land of Nod (now Crate & Kids), and custom decor, including high-quality blackout curtains (“with kids, you’re going to want it as dark as possible”) and chairs in performance fabrics.

MONTHS OUT While the orders were being processed, Berry completed a “cosmetic face-lift” on-site. In the boy’s room, a brandnew set of closet doors was lacquered and
installed. In the girl’s room, a built-in shelf was removed to make space for a crib. Both nurseries were painted, wallpapered, and trimmed in grosgrain ribbon—a sweet alternative to traditional molding.

HOURS OUT Installation began just two days before the baby shower—and within weeks of the twins’ arrival: Dove Muzzy and Max Talbott joined the family on December 2, 2018. “Fatherhood is so much better than I ever could have imagined,” Malin says. And so is the nursery suite: “It’s unbelievable,” he says. “The space is not only functional, but it has the sense of magic we were aiming for, plus so much more.”

To accommodate the tight time line, she prioritized quick vendors and readily available materials—when pulling swatches, for example, she chose fabrics that were “in stock and on reserve.”

FUN AND GAMES are at the heart of everything interior designer Elizabeth Georgantas does. As the founder of Georgantas Design and Development, she has designed winding slides for clients with kids, and, back home in Boston, is known to host over-the-top theme parties (like her annual back-to-school, parentsonly Animal House dinner, featuring Domino’s pizza and Jell-O shots). Fittingly, the renovation of her family’s summer house on Nantucket had a lighthearted approach, despite its serious history. signing up for a project. “Every inch we touched caused two inches around it to fall apart and have to be repaired,” says Georgantas. “I lovingly refer to it as my ‘money pit,’ as in the Tom Hanks movie.” The couple embarked on a major restoration—repairing nearly 300year-old rooms, leveling the foundation, patching floors, and fixing crumbling plaster and beams with beetle damage— all while accepting quirks and imperfections along the way. “We really strove to keep the house as we found it whenever possible, while adding back some historical details that over the years had been removed,” she
says. “Cracks are a record of history—we wanted to honor them, not hide them.”
A welcome playfulness is everywhere, from the indoor-outdoor dining shed where Georgantas nailed paintings to the ceiling to island-inspired touches, like the edgy sailor-tattoo wallpaper and glass skull sconces in the powder room. In the bunk room, where countless kids can be found running circuits or playing hide-and-seek, Georgantas created the ultimate hideaway: six bunks connected by bridges, hanging chairs, and pillow-filled reading nooks. “It had to be comfortable enough for adults, but ridiculously fun for the kids—not just now, but as they grow up,” she says. While lying in bed, guests can gaze up at shiny constellation wallpaper, and starry tiles cover the nearest bathroom’s floor. Georgantas skipped a double vanity in there in favor of a wide trough sink that allows for more elbow room. A fearless scout, Georgantas let her creativity fly when sourcing materials for the restoration. Salvaged granite was used for the steps, and a stainless steel Sub-Zero wine fridge is disguised under an antique icebox door. Up to 12 kids
The Two-Hour Outdoor Dining Shed When our style director, Robert Rufino, found this shed, empty except for the art nailed to the ceiling, Georgantas told him, “I dreamed it could be an entertaining space.” That’s all he needed to hear...
First, a table: Georgantas has had this one for years. Rufino paired it with chairs she found at a garage sale.
Second, mood lighting: Georgantas’s husband hung an antique chandelier, but if your space isn’t wired for electricity, use candles instead. Third, accessories: Rufino set the table with all kinds of dinnerware from the house and dressed the walls with glass bottles from the attic and hats from the entryway.

can snuggle around the breakfast table, where wipeable pleather banquettes are “sand-, saltwater-, and spaghetti sauce–proof.” An Italian at heart, Georgantas embraces the wear and tear of the kitchen. She splurged on a extra-wide sink and double-spout faucet so she could keep cooking as friends pour in and kids skate through the room. The party naturally congregates around the oversize island, which is topped with two-inch-thick, unmitered Carrara marble—a distressed surface that she refuses to agonize over when stains, nicks, and chips happen. “As the adage goes, the kitchen is the heart of my home. It’s where I live and breathe, where I nourish my children, my friendships, and my soul,” she says. “I want it to tell the life of what happened here.” 54

Dixon found Jean Baptiste’s Geometric 3 series at Natural Curiosities in California. “The owner will reproduce old designs—in this case, old tile drawings for floors—on recycled pulp paper,” explains the designer, who framed them in acrylic shadow boxes that won’t shatter if they got knocked into by a kid. Virginia-based designer Barry Dixon of the blush on the walls of the living room in this Washington, D.C., house. “A pale terra-cotta or a faded brick color, a pale clay. Everyone looks beautiful in that room.” The color, Cochin Shell, isn’t a vestige of the 1970s, from when the house was built; Dixon created it for his line at C2 Paint, and it’s matched exactly to the pigment of an egg laid by a heritagebreed hen on his farm in Virginia. A room awash in rosé might be a leap for some clients, but the designer had a pretty good hunch this family would go for it. He’d given them an even more vibrantly pink living room in the past. “They were on board with it right away,” he says. Dixon—who also designs fabrics for Vervain, furniture and accessories for Arteriors, upholstery for Tomlinson, and much more—first worked with the family years ago, when they had one toddler son and another son on the way.

(Their previous row house on Capitol Hill appeared on the September 2011 cover of House Beautiful.) Most of the furniture and fixtures traveled to the new space. “We used fabrics that we knew would stand the test of time,” he says. “We did not have to reupholster a single thing from the home we did for them eight years ago.” Two things have changed: The family gained a third son, and, finally, a daughter. Enter a very pink bedroom that is magically unlike the pink living room, due to a cooler undertone (along with heart pillows and an abundance of stuffed animals). “It’s a girlier pink, sort of frothier,” he says, “a color we call Belle’s Nose,” which is another of his C2 paints. “Belle is one of my goats at the barn, and her nose is exactly that shade of pink.” Color is often a jumping-off point for Dixon. “These clients do like color and want color. But if we have a room that’s saturated with it, then the room next to it will be a bit of a palate cleanser,” he explains. Rooms with bright walls get

more neutral furnishings, while rooms with pale walls (often doused in C2’s Drabware) have hot spikes on the furniture, like the Hermès orange chairs in the family room. Further rules of color theory apply. “I wouldn’t use blues in, say, a dining room, because it’s not really a color that stimulates appetite,” he says. “As I go up in a house, skyward, we use more blues. I’ll put blue in a bedroom simply because it is a serene color to fall asleep in.” Indeed, a soothing cornflower appears in the master bedroom, a color called Well Water, while one son’s room is in Approaching Storm, both by C2. “He loves camping, so we did these canopies—almost like tent flaps— above his bed, which absorb sound and define the bedroom area,” Dixon says. While the kids’ rooms reflect their current personalities (another son’s room is a smoky amethyst color, inspired by his rock collection—check it out on housebeautiful.com), they are built to last. “I think the shell and the base of furnishings should grow with them. You can replace the daughter’s little heart pillows with more serious pillows as she gets older,” Dixon says. Already, the
design has proved its longevity: The artwork, ottoman, and drapes in the daughter’s room were all used in the family’s previous formal living room. “It really is about the mix,” he says. “If you mix old with new, midcentury modern with Colonial, futuristic chrome tables with old French chairs, you hit a point where everything is timeless.”

OCCASIONALLY, IN THE WILDS OF NEW YORK CITY, A DOWNTOWN
girl’s gotta move uptown. But she doesn’t have to be happy about it. “I was nervous about moving to the Upper East Side,” says Erica Samuels, an art consultant whose decor tastes run more Etheline Tenenbaum than Charlotte York. There was only one designer who could translate her experimental sensibilities to the family’s new four-bedroom co-op: Fawn Galli. “People come to me because they know what they like, but they want to be challenged or pushed,” says Galli, whose first book, Magical Rooms: Elements of Interior Design (Rizzoli), just hit bookstores in March. Her interiors exude a blissfully unrestrained confidence. After all, Galli lived without electricity or plumbing on a houseboat in Northern California until she was seven, and then there was Paris, where she spent two years post-college inhaling the flea markets and discotheques. So when she moved to New York City, armed with little more than a degree in international relations, she got a job at Robert A.M. Stern “as a professional pencil sharpener, assistant to the assistant.” But not for long, she recalls: “Five years later, I was his personal decorator.”
Her reimagining of the apartment where Samuels lives with her husband and their two daughters is every inch a mash-up. “At first,” Galli says, “she wanted it to be very contemporary—no window treatments!— then it evolved into something more her, in a maximalist-minimalist sort of way.” Take the living room’s custom S-shaped, cobalt-bouclé sofa, which comfortably seats multitudes during the couple’s frequent parties, or the Alexander McQueen skull rug from the Rug Company that counteracts a ladylike circular settee in the entry hall. Samuels’s art collection includes more than a few museum-worthy stunners, like

David Shrigley’s Fancy Room above the dining table, and a Keith Haring that graces the homework area. “There’s a lot to take in, but at the same time, it’s clean and it’s restful,” says Galli, who used gray and white paints to keep bolder pieces from reading as frenetic. Given Samuels’s children, the design also had to stand up to sleepover-level wear and tear. Instead of glass for a coffee table, Galli used Lucite. Rather than swathing a seat in a precious fabric, she placed it on the less-likely-to-takea-spill backside. The canopy bed in a daughter’s room is upholstered, “so they can jump around and knock their heads on it, and they’re fine,” the designer says. And there is
durable indoor/outdoor fabric everywhere. Now that Galli has given the digs downtown cred, Samuels is obsessed with her new neighborhood. “I said I was never going to live uptown, I was never going to live on a cross street, but I live up here now, and I love it. So never say never!” she laughs. “Who you are isn’t where you live.”

shaped into statuettes and lamps, even woven into the pattern of a rug—everywhere you look in this house, bunnies hop. It’s a family affair, in fact: The rambling, eightbedroom stone structure in Buck Hill Falls, Pennsylvania—a Poconos enclave established by Quakers in 1901—is named Bunny Hop Cottage in honor of the owner’s grandmother. “Her personality pretty much dictated what happened in this house,” says designer Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey, who was enlisted by Bunny’s grandson and his wife to help renovate it with their family of five in mind. The husband’s kin have been summering around here since the 1940s. Once, Grandma Bunny brought

her grandson and his wife along for cocktails at this home, then occupied by another family. The residence so enchanted them that, when its patriarch became too aged to maintain the house, the couple purchased it. Their chief desire? “To have a space that could accommodate their entire extended family, and also grow with their own changing family,” says Cavin-Winfrey. “Family is everything to them.” The couple’s narrative inspired Cavin-Winfrey’s design. “[The wife] does needlework and is a big quilter,” she explains. “That led me to believe they could take a lot of pattern, because, like needlework, it’s very detailed.” In the living room’s
kaleidoscopic mix (five patterns, not including solid colors and throw pillows!), each fabric references the home’s surroundings. A basket weave on the sofa recalls a traditional Quaker craft, and a banquette is upholstered in “an iteration of a faux bois” that mirrors the surrounding 82

heavily forested landscape, as does the custom cabinetry of willow and birch bark, and custom chandeliers made of white-painted branches. Taking cues from both the wife’s love of crafting and the local artisanal traditions, Cavin-Winfrey layered in collections of antique needlepoint samplers, quilts, Pennsylvania Dutch bowls, pails and tole tins from the region, and rope and hooked rugs. With the wife, she also designed the dining room rug, which depicts the surrounding hills and includes characters and objects that allude to family members and favorite pastimes. The wife’s parents are deer, a grandfather is a fox, and leaping trout, rods, and creels suggest the family’s avocation of fly-fishing. Grandma, of course, is a bunny. The former owners’ story is woven throughout, too, in the form of furniture purchased along with the house. There’s a massive Victorian dining table and chairs, for instance, which suited the clients’ lifestyle, so they kept it. “They have a more formal style of entertaining than what you generally find today,” Cavin-Winfrey explains. She balanced the heaviness of these antiques with bright gingham fabric and wallpaper, and by pickling the dark paneling white. Darker Victorian pieces are paired with painted folk furniture and slipcovers. “Setting is everything—always,” says the designer. “This house is telling a story. It’s the family’s story, but also one of lineage in this particular place.”

A FAMILY WALKS INTO A BAR ...
OK, technically it’s a chic boutique hotel with an outdoor restaurant and bar near their Long Island, New York, vacation home. They like it so much, they summon its designer. “It really was kismet,” says Dan Mazzarini, the artistic force behind American Beech in Greenport, New York—and, now, the family’s residences. “They called us out of the blue but were so sweet and persistent that we got them a proposal, and they signed the same day!”

The clients, Alfred and Nicole Eskandar, enlisted Mazzarini to cast their newbuild home in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, in a style that one might call “vacationinspired”—no surprise, considering how they found him. But you won’t see shiplap siding or palm-print wallpapers in their halls. Instead, the couple and their three kids provided all the direction he needed just by reminiscing. “When we met them to do this house, they had just gone on a tour through the American Southwest,” Mazzarini recalls. “So the style of the home is far more Bohemian than people usually see in Greenwich. But it really describes the family well: warm, casual, nothing too precious.” A pale desert palette might sound all wrong in a town known for its blueblood billionaires, but under Mazzarini and his colleague Sarah Peterson Major’s guidance, it is equally sophisticated and irreverent, a page right out of Georgia O’Keeffe’s Ghost Ranch. “One of Nicole’s asks was that the color story be consistent: ‘I want this to read like a runway show when you’re going from room to room. I want it to work together,’ ” Mazzarini recalls. “I got it right away, so there’s a progression: bolder in the dining room, light and lovely in the family room, all kinds of gradations of desert colors.” Terra-cotta tones, naturally, are everywhere: splashed through the pattern of a rug, in the triangles of a mural that family friend and artist Laura Spinner hand-painted onto the walls of the dining

room. Poufs, made from vintage kilims, cleverly nestle up under the six-foot-square custom coffee table that Mazzarini designed for game nights in the family room. The home is bursting with good memories. After picking up several metal crosses on a trip to Mexico, Nicole was inspired to create a whole wall of them like the ones she’d seen in the surf town of Todos Santos. Animal figurines and dream catchers, souvenirs from
other family vacations, are displayed or framed in the rest of the house. Mazzarini’s trademark mix of high-end craft furnishings and finds from stores like Anthropologie gives all these keepsakes a certain timelessness. But is this house the family’s final destination? “Knowing them,” the designer says, “they’ll go on a couple more great trips as a family, and in a few years, we’ll be doing it again.”
