Lounge The living room space has been created from the new extension – no planning permission was required as it was within permitted development rights. The couple raised the ceiling height and added a roof light. However, top of their list were the bi-fold doors. ‘All these additions make the space feel light and bright and when the bi-fold doors are open, there is a seamless transition from living room to garden – we just love spending time in here.’

Style idea White walls create the perfect backdrop for MidCentury chic

Welcome

to my home A bit about me I’m Siobhan Burke, a project manager and I’m married to Joe, an architect. We live here with our cat, Marco.

Where I live My home is a threebedroom 1960s build ex-council house, in Leytonstone, north east London. We bought it in August 2017.

What I wanted to change We wanted to change everything! It was an advantage that the house needed a full refurbishment as it meant that everything could be updated. We followed the 1960s-style through to the interiors and added a touch of Scandi.

‘Total refurbishment meant we could put everything back as we wanted it’

My favourite part We love the downstairs living, dining and kitchen area. It’s spacious, light and great for entertaining – especially with the amazing bi-fold doors.

Siobhan likes to mix up styles. The painting above the sofa, commissioned from artist friend, Abi Box, is one of the couple’s favourite items. The vintage G-Plan sideboard was a bargain ind, while the cofee table and curtains are from Ikea

How I made it my own

My house May 2019 15

‘We wanted a home oice but didn’t want to use one of the bedrooms. Our oice nook works really well and maximises the space.’ The orange industrial Bisley cabinet was found in a vintage store

‘We’re so glad we managed to create our own home office space’

Siobhan found the vintage Ercol sofa on Gumtree for just £40. ‘We simply upholstered it and replaced the webbing’

My story... After four years, we had outgrown our flat and were on the lookout for our next project. We definitely wanted to stay locally but knew it would be hard with the increasing property prices in the area. We have always been interested in Mid-Century design and this led us to look around for ex-council houses built in the 60s and 70s. Our house was literally the first door we knocked on! We instantly saw such great potential. After speaking with the owner, we discovered she had lived here since it was built in 1969 and was even the first person to move in on the small 20-house development. Quickly, with the help of her daughter, we agreed a private sale. There was a real sense of history and charm with the décor, but to be honest, there wasn’t really anything that we wanted to keep. It was packed with wood panelling, polystyrene tiles, plastic concertina doors, layers of laminate flooring and different wallpaper on every wall. We moved straight in and then quickly moved straight back out again! As Joe is an architect, he was able to draw up a series of sketch options and plans for the extension and new layout, plus he has great trade contacts, so it was easy to source builders and tradesmen. The build was pretty straightforward, the house is basically a box – our biggest challenge was the time factor, as we were paying storage fees and rent, and later on, discovered that the entire roof needed replacing. We were keen to show that an ugly ex-council house can have so much potential, and I think we’ve done just that, I’m very proud! 16 homestylemag.co.uk

As the house has no load-bearing walls, every internal wall could easily be removed with no additional structure required, including the wood panelled one separating the kitchen from the former living room. ‘We really wanted open-plan living but we were also keen to divide up the spaces. We have tried to make each area its own zone, while keeping it sociable. The vintage Ercol table and chairs were my grandparents and I have lots of happy memories of it.’

‘The island acts as a divide between the kitchen and dining space. We designed it with Jon Grant and sourced the castor wheels ourselves. It’s our favourite item of furniture and completely unique to us – we can move it to change the layout of the kitchen-dining area.’

Siobhan has opted for big white shelf units to display all her favourite bits and bobs, which include a vintage sewing machine, her collection of books and the odd hanging plant or two. Shelves make the already open-plan space feel even more roomy as they let the light lood through the room seamlessly. 18 homestylemag.co.uk

‘We chose a modern kitchen in light grey from Ikea. The in-store design process allowed us to personalise our space. We even used Ikea approved itters. The hexagon tiles from Johnson Tiles work perfectly with the style of the kitchen

Siobhan and Joe chart their home interior projects on Instagram – @ourleytonhouse, which they have quoted on their kitchen chalkboard. This is also used for displaying their weekday dinner menu.

‘Scandi homes are my design inluence – light, white, grey palette, along with Mid-Century design and plants.’ Vintage Ercol table and chairs inherited from Siobhan’s grandparents work well alongside the Ikea grid shelving and pendant light

‘The new entrance space sets the style of our house. It is bigger and brighter, helped by the long glass panel that sits alongside our new front door’ May 2019 19

A dark navy statement wall, in Naval Night by Valspar, ofers a surprising burst of colour and is the perfect backdrop for the simple plug-in pendant lights

In the guest bedroom, high street meets vintage with a small Ercol writing desk and chair, alongside an Aldi vintage black lamp and Ikea grey Kopardal bed

Master bedroom The couple have found the space challenging but have managed to make the room work with underbed storage and a new wardrobe neatly positioned behind the door, leaving all focus on the striking upholstered headboard from Made. Design details such as the painted feature wall and single flex pendant bedside lights from Vendimia Lighting Co counter the otherwise neutral and relaxed space.’

Expert advice How to create a Mid-Century inspired look

auction sites such as eBay are a good place to start, but make sure you read the description and look closely at photos.

Be consistent with a particular home style

pops of bright colour around the house. Even homes with a simple monochromatic Scandi colour palette can be given a little more interest by adding a splash of Mid-Century paint colours in the right places.

Inspiring homes

‘Joe worked on the house design, while I spent my time picking out the interior style’

Bathroom ‘The old bathroom was the worst room in the house – no shower and bath taps with only boiling water running through.’ The couple made the decision to combine the two rooms to create a larger, more functional family bathroom – though work only took place once they had moved back in. ‘We really wanted to have a decent sized, relaxing room. I was desperate to make a Scandimodern feel so we went for matt black taps from Soak and white wall tiles from Johnson Tiles.’

Style idea Plants are an inexpensive way of adding colour and filling little spaces

‘I love plants and having them in the bathroom makes the space feel super-relaxed’. Other design highlights include a feature half wall in Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe and a black and white bath mat from Matalan

What I learned... l Taking on a project this size isn’t easy. We found that having a plan and a budget in place was so important. Agreeing designs before starting any building work meant that we didn’t rush into any decisions. l Don’t be afraid to do certain jobs yourself. Doing parts of the renovation makes you feel like you have contributed to the project. l The unexpected happens. During the bathroom renovation we added a roof light only to discover that we needed to replace the whole roof – an unfortunate extra cost that had not been anticipated beforehand.

Kitchen-diner

Welcome

to my home A bit about me I’m Zoe Young, a home stylist at zoeyounginteriors. com. I live with my husband, Gregor and two children.

‘All this room really needed were some cosmetic changes, a lick of white paint to cover the mocha brown, and some new furniture to fill the dining area. We didn’t change the kitchen cabinetry as it still works and would have been too expensive. But we did replace all 40 knobs with pretty blue ceramic ones from Trinca Ferro. We invested in a baby blue Smeg fridge freezer, and I also really wanted a range cooker and luckily we had the right sized gap for one. In the dining area we have teamed Ikea cube units with more traditional pieces, such as the farmhouse kitchen table and pine dresser.’

Where I live We live in a threebedroom semi-detached house in Carshalton, Surrey. We’ve been here for seven years.

What I wanted to change The house had a lovely feel to it and luckily the extension was already done but the black bathroom had to go!

Feature and styling Suzie Attaway Photos Olly Gordon

How I made it my own We have added a huge amount of personality and colour to the house. There are typography prints that are a daily reminder of how we want to live, and lots of homemade pieces.

My favourite part Obviously the large kitchen-diner, but also the rainbow staircase up to the loft.

The open-plan kitchen-diner, which had already been extended, was a deinite selling point for Zoe

‘I am passionate about having a bright, colourful and inspiring place to spend time in’

My story... We moved to this house in Carshalton seven years ago, as we loved the community village feel, the green spaces, the local schools and quick commute into London where Gregor works. We’d just had Gracie and didn’t want to do any major structural changes with a new baby so the fact that the extension was already done was key, and the family-sized kitchen really sold the house to us. There were a few drawbacks though, the bathroom was covered from floor to ceiling in black tiles, the kitchen was mocha brown and the hallway was red, which isn’t my taste at all. The previous owners had actually painted around their furniture in the kitchen so that was a bit of a shock when we saw the house empty on moving day! And they took absolutely everything with them, from light bulbs to even the doorbell. Not long after moving in we also discovered that the walls in the hallway were damp in places – the red paint had cleverly disguised it! So that took some time and money to sort out, and wasn’t something we had expected. The lounge and master bedroom were fairly easy decorating jobs, but we built our own shelving in the empty alcoves, as the house lacked storage big time! We have kept the original engineered oak flooring throughout the downstairs and had the taupe carpets cleaned upstairs. We waited a year until we completely revamped the small, dark bathroom. We hired a builder to carry out the work but we planned and sourced everything ourselves. The following year, we converted the loft into a usable space. Gradually we’re getting there with this house – we love it. 28 homestylemag.co.uk

‘The piano has been in my family for years, it used to be my grandad’s. It was a very dark lacquered wood so we primed it irst and then painted it in Conran’s Dandelion Puf’

Zoe found the pine dresser in an antique shop in the village. ‘The base is illed with games and the top displays some of our favourite glassware and china that we’ve picked up along the way,’ she says. The dining area features two of Zoe’s loves – plants and prints, the latter is of her hometown, Brighton. There are also Ikea picture shelves, which display artwork and pretty bottles.

‘Classic Ikea Kallax shelving in the dining area is very hardworking with shelves, drawers and baskets. The couple have displayed attractive books, plants and motivational prints on the shelves, and the baskets are full of crafty things for the kids. ’I think it’s important for the children to know that being creative and resourceful is an important part of life.’ May 2019 29

Lounge ‘The original lounge had dark cream walls with no storage. We considered having bespoke cupboards built in the alcoves but decided we would save our money, and make our own shelving from MDF, which we painted in Farrow & Ball’s Tunsgate Green along with the walls. As the room was quite dark we bought a large Art Deco-style mirror to bring in more light. We made a gallery wall from family portraits, and put up very thin shelving to display Gregor’s favourite records, as music is a huge part of his life. I bought a large deep pile rug from La Redoute, and lots of cushions to make the room feel as cosy as possible.’

walls – it’s an easy way to fill your home with lots of personality and colour. And picture shelves are great for displaying all sorts of things. Don’t be limited to frames, postcards and children’s artwork can also look great. l Use books as a styling tool.

Create a rainbow bookshelf of colourful paperbacks or stack books in twos or threes on open-shelving or a low coffee table to add colour to a scheme. Choose similar shades which will work with your current set-up. Place a plant or trinket dish on top to elevate them. May 2019 31

Master bedroom ‘The original bedroom has baby blue walls with white tongue and groove up to the dado rail, and a lovely bay window. The alcoves were empty, and to save money we made our own built-in wardrobes. We then painted the room in Little Greene’s Welcome, and bought some ready-made curtains from John Lewis. We chose a super king size bed from Willow & Hall as both the kids are usually in it with us! Our bedside tables were from a charity shop, which we updated with a lick of paint.’

‘We painted the walls in Gracie’s room in Farrow & Ball’s Pavilion Blue. I like to hang lots of colourful and inspiring things for her to look at on the walls, which are pinned or stuck with Command strips and washi tape so it’s really easy to change around as she grows up.’ A row of picture ledges provide a handy spot to display favourite books. The toy storage is from Ikea.

Zoe found a pair of vintage oice drawers in a charity shop, which she painted and uses as bedside tables

Inspiring homes We found a small roll top bath by The Bath Co at Victoria Plum, and also bought a wall-mounted cloakroom basin, as space was so tight

What I learned... l Go with your heart rather than getting too hung up on trends. I’ve got a vase in the playroom with ammonites on it, I bought it because Jack is mad about dinosaurs and fossils, so it has a personal slant. l Live with a space for a while before deciding what you want it to be. If we’d waited to extend the kitchen after we had children, we may have done it diferently, making it bigger with a family room. l If you can’t ind something suitable, have a go yourself. For instance, Dave built the alcove display shelving in the living room himself, as we couldn’t ind anything to it.

Bathroom ‘The original bathroom was dark and dated – the floor and wall were covered in black tiles, and there was a large P-shaped corner bath with a ceiling-mounted shower. We used brilliant computer software to plan the new bathroom, and we discovered that we would be able to fit both a freestanding bath and a separate shower into the small space, which was amazing!’

What I learned... Style idea Brighten up a neutral bed with colourful, patterned and textured cushions

l Let your inner child free when designing kids’ rooms. You can be less serious and more playful in these spaces, and they don’t have to have a particularly structured or cohesive look – the more colour and creative touches the better. l Don’t hold on to anything that you don’t love. Your home should make you feel great, if you don’t like something it’s got to go!

Zoe’s bedroom is a calm and peaceful space in a muted colour palette of grey and pastels. Patchwork and loral cushions from John Lewis and Dunelm, plus a tasselled blanket from Harlequin make for a restful feel

l In hindsight, I should have used a paint suitable for high traic areas in the hallway because of all the handprints and drawing my kids have done on the walls!

‘My style is resourceful, fun and colourful – I also like to mix bold patterns and textures’

Kitchen ‘The original kitchen was very small and separate to the dining room. It had dated white Formica units with dark wood handles, brown wallpapered splashback tiles and an old tiled lino floor. We planned to create an open-plan space, leading out to the conservatory and as soon as we got the keys we knocked down the wall between the kitchen and dining room. I wanted a neutral scheme and chose a practical matt grey handleness kitchen from Howdens, which won’t age.’

We did all the work Despite a tight budget and limited time, Gemma Northam has turned her dated 38 homestylemag.co.uk

Inspiring homes Gemma’s open-plan Howdens kitchen is now a bright and modern space where she spends most of the time with her family. ‘I just love the result we got from knocking down the wall to create the heart of our home’

Welcome

to my home A bit about me I’m Gemma Northam, a teaching assistant and artist. I live with my husband, David, our two children, plus dog Effie and cat Elsa.

Where I live We live in a fourbedroom ex-council house in Margate.

What I wanted to change

Add pattern to a plain floor with a bold rug

How I made it my own After it was plastered we painted the walls white and I used this as an opportunity to add colour and pattern with artwork, prints and furnishings.

My favourite part The kitchen-diner as it’s such a warm and welcoming space to cook and entertain family and friends. It’s a space that we spend a lot of our time in.

in eight weeks ex-council house by the sea into a vibrant home

Style idea

Everything! We purchased the house in November 2017 and it was in need of a full refurbishment, from top to bottom.

My house May 2019 39

In the dining room a neutral colour scheme keeps things streamlined, while Gemma’s artwork, plants and lowers add a punctuation of colour. The couple found the wooden dining table and retro Eifel-style chairs on eBay

Gemma chose a sleek stainless steel oven and hob from Howdens to complement the grey handleless units, white tiles and worktops

My story... We moved here from a three-bedroom Victorian terrace which was just around the corner, as we needed more space. Even though I loved the period features of our old home, this one has much bigger rooms, a spacious garden and driveway for two cars. It was very dated though, there was no central heating system, the patterned carpets were worn and the walls were in a bad way as they had been decorated with many layers of wallpaper and paint over the years. In the dining room we uncovered two layers of wallpaper that had been painted and then boarded over with a very basic wood panelling! It was the same with the flooring in some of the rooms, there was multiple layers of carpet. The house had also been left empty for some time and the garden was an overgrown jungle. We did the whole refurb in only eight weeks with a one-week stop for Christmas! As soon as we received the keys we stripped the whole house bare with the help of family – doing as much of the hard labour as possible ourselves to save money. With most of the hard work done, we called upon the professional trades, an electrician and plumber, to rewire the entire house and install a new boiler and central heating system throughout. Next, we had most of the walls replastered, and a kitchen and bathroom delivered and fitted. We then started decorating all the rooms. I decided to paint all the walls white at first to start with a blank canvas – I love colour and pattern, but wanted to wait until we’d lived in the house for a while before I put my stamp on it. Now we’ve got it exactly how we want it and we couldn’t be happier with the family home we’ve created. 40 homestylemag.co.uk

‘We started planning the refurb long before we completed – I had tradesmen lined up to give quotes straight away’

Style idea Mix and match the colour of your dining chairs for a modern feel

Dining area ‘Once the wall separating this room from the kitchen was pulled down, we opened up the fireplace and stripped the rest of the walls bare. We had the walls skimmed and then painted them white. I found a second-hand radiator cover on eBay which I sprayed black, and then hung my artwork on the walls. The table and chairs were also a bargain eBay purchase. The cupboard was given to me by a friend, which I primed and painted with grey chalk paint.’

The dining room features some of Gemma’s original artwork on the walls. ‘At the moment my style is rocking a little bit of luxe, I love to team mixed metallics with black and white – they catch the light beautifully’

Gemma has given a retro 70s sideboard which she bought on eBay a new lease of life with leftover tester pots of paint. She decided to keep the frame of the sideboard and just paint the door and drawer fronts. This was a wise decision as it is consistent with the other wooden furniture in the house but at the same time adds a subtle hint of colour to the room. Inspired by Instagram, Gemma made a succulent garden centrepiece for her dining table using an old salad bowl, succulents from Aldi and some pebbles from the garden.

Lounge ‘The old lounge had walls thick with yellow paint, matching yellow skirting and an 80s patterned carpet. We gutted the room, including ripping out the old fire, and replastered the walls. We then gave the walls a lick of white paint and laid oak-effect laminate flooring along with the rest of the ground floor. We had a new gas fire installed and I gave the original wooden mantelpiece a makeover with black Frenchic chalk paint, which has given it a modern look.’

Make sure to nail your choice of gallery wall

l An easy picture hanging hack

l Be careful to keep the frames

spatially related to, and in proportion with a piece of furniture in the room such as a sofa or sideboard. Measure the width you want to stick to. l Match the size of the picture

to the size of the wall – avoid hanging a small picture by itself on a large expanse of wall space. If creating a gallery wall, mix up frames, colours and sizes to make the collection really

I wanted to add some pattern to our hallway and I found the perfect silver wallpaper from Wayfair

is to apply a piece of masking tape to the wall before you drill or hammer in a nail. This stops the plaster or mortar from crumbling and making a huge mess and a large hole in the wall. l Use adhesive picture hooks

to temporarily hang lightweight artwork to painted walls and make sure to position them away from direct sunlight – if they are exposed for a long time they could fade. Command strips are a real lifesaver!

‘I chose a darker grey carpet in the bedrooms to contrast with the stark white walls’

Inspiring homes Guest bedroom

Gemma has brought texture to her walls with an array of wall-hung baskets and a black-framed mirror

‘We gave the guest bedroom the same ‘blank canvas’ treatment as the other rooms, but last summer I decided to add some pattern and I chose a yellow and grey chevron wallpaper. I secretly wanted it to be a nursery and my wish came true as I am now expecting our third child! I made the bedside shelf from an off-cut of scaffolding plank and sprayed some cheap brackets with copper paint.’

Master bedroom ‘Like the other rooms, the master bedroom was tired and oldfashioned, with painted wallpaper, a patterned carpet and wall-mounted bedhead and bedside tables. It wasn’t long before the walls and floor were stripped back, and we could get stuck in with the decorating. I made a feature of the chimney breast by painting the original fireplace with black chalk paint and decorating the wall with black spot decals – they were really easy to use and add an element of fun to the room.’

In the guest bedroom space is minimal and a double bed takes up the majority of the room, but Gemma has used a chevron patterned wallpaper and boho accessories to add a punch of character

What I learned... l To be brave! It wasn’t our intention to do a complete refurbishment, especially over the winter months, but it was worth the stress as we now have our dream home. l We saved money by stripping everything out and doing a lot of the hard labour ourselves. We also painted the entire house so saved money on decorating bills, too. l Spend as much time planning as possible. I had tradesman on standby to visit and give quotes as soon as we moved in just so we could efectively work out our budget and what we needed to invest in. The mantelpiece was given a quick update with black chalk paint by Frenchic

My story... When we moved in to our home in 2013, we were faced with an all-cream interior and a kitchen that wouldn’t work for the size of our family so I knew that we needed to change it to create a more functional and personalised space. But we wanted to move from Glasgow to a more family friendly area in order to bring up the girls, which is why Stewarton appealed. Our home is on an awardwining estate and it grabbed our attention as not only did it have lots of kerb appeal, I loved the Ayrshire stone that was used on the exterior, plus I can see the Isle of Arran on a clear day, so it ticked a lot of boxes. We completely changed the kitchen as although it was a family home, the space was not practical for such a large family as initially my older kids Corey and Jay were living here as well. Plus, there was a huge cupboard, which sat halfway in the kitchen and blocked the view of the whole room, so it had to go. It’s now a great, open-plan kitchendiner where we spend a lot of time. I also went through the house adding subtle feature walls. I love Cole & Son wallpapers and couldn’t wait to showcase my favourites to add some personality! Both John and I love music, so as well as decorating in a mainly pink and white colour scheme we also have a lot of music-themed artwork as well as my beloved Dave Grohl cushion! Although I am happy with what we have achieved so far, I’m not finished yet and I’d eventually like to convert the garage into a small sitting room snug and add a garden room at the back of the kitchen. 52 homestylemag.co.uk

The kitchen space is seamless thanks to an all-white scheme with pops of colour. The end of the kitchen units doubles up as a place to sit with clear plastic bar stools from eBay, which match the Ghost-style chairs and pendant lights from Laura Ashley

Why you’ll

love this look l If you’re nervous that a deep shade will darken a room, a floral pattern will brighten the space while still creating drama. l Oversized flowers in bold tones of magenta, red and orange will really pop, while soft corals and pastels create a beautiful contrast against a dramatic dark palette. l You don’t have to paint or wallpaper walls, a bed set or large art print can create the same effect without redecorating.

rope footstool Give a modern and eco-twist to a classic piece with this crafty upcycle

Top Tip We used Zpagetti yarn which is made from cotton leftovers from the fashion industry. The clever people at Hoooked turn it into big spools of yarn that you can use for all kinds of home crafts.

Style idea The natural look not for you? Update the stool with a coat of chalk paint

ECO YARN Hoooked Zpagetti yarn, ÂŁ8.89 for 850g, Rito 70 homestylemag.co.uk

Upcycling challenge

Footstool revamp Second-hand shops are full of footstools like this, which often look tatty and unloved, but by changing the seat from old rattan to a brightly coloured chunky yarn will provide it with a new lease of life. Any footstool with a fabric or rattan seat can be given a makeover – you might have a similar piece of furniture in your loft or you can pick them up for next to nothing in charity shops or on eBay.

Takes 2 hours You will need

Q Old footstool Q Scissors Q Sandpaper Q Paint and paintbrush (optional) Q 50m chunky yarn, such as Zpagetti

1

Cut away the stool’s original twine or rattan seating. Continue removing it until you are left with just the wooden frame. There’s no need to clean the footstool as the wood will be sanded later. Sand the wood down to remove any old varnish or paint. At this stage you could paint the frame any colour you like, but we decided to leave it in its natural state.

2

3 4

9

5

10

Take your ball of Zpagetti or other strong yarn. Tie the end securely to one of the upper side bars of the stool. Wrap the yarn across the seat, from one side to the other, taking it over the top of the frame and then across the underside. The yarn needs to be pulled taut. Keep wrapping until you have covered the whole width of the seat. Make sure that the total number of wraps is a multiple of five, e.g. 50, 55, or 60 wraps, depending on the size of the stool frame. Move the ball of yarn over to one of the side bars, and wrap it once around the bar to secure it in place. Now weave the yarn up and over every five strands. To start, go under the first five strands, then up and over the next five strands. Continue this under/over process until you reach the other side of the frame. Go back in the opposite direction, so over where you went under, and under where you went over. Push the wraps of yarn up close together to create a stronger seat, and remember to keep the yarn pulled taut. Keep going until you have woven the whole stool seating. It’s better to work

6 7

8

with a small ball of yarn as this is easier to push through the strands. We cut a length of around 10m and rolled it into a small ball. If you run out of yarn, simply tie the end of the old piece securely to the new length of yarn and keep weaving. Any knots or loose ends can be pushed through to the underside to hide the join. When you have finished, cut the yarn and tie it securely to a side post. Tuck the tail end to the underside. Then sit back and put your feet up on your newly revamped footstool!

COME DINE Napoleonic Blue; Provence wall paint, £39.95 for 2.5L, both Annie Sloan

COOL TONES Calm, cool and serene – dive into a scheme inspired by nature

Blue bathrooms Blue is a popular colour choice for bathrooms and for good reason. It’s known to be a cleansing shade, as well as reminding us of the beach and everything nautical. But, how can a blue bathroom scheme be modernised? Painting your bath navy is a great solution as this is bang on trend. Or, you could always

use more than one tone of blue on the walls and brighten up with colourful accessories. Warm up your bathroom scheme by pairing it with gold hardware. This will not only make the room look more luxe but will stop it feeling too cold. Also, opt for wooden flooring or original floorboards if you have them, instead of a grey-toned vinyl for the same reason.

RELAXING SOAK Duck Egg; Teal; Stepping Stone matt emulsion, from £18 for 2.5L, all Crown

Two-toned

Feature Becca Green

Using cooler colours in the kitchen is an instant opinion-divider. Blue is known as an appetite suppressant, therefore wouldn’t traditionally be used in an eating space. However, there are many ways to get around this. For example, keep your cabinetry neutral and opt for a two-toned wall. This way, it won’t be overwhelming and instead of being one wash of colour it will successfully divide the space up. We love the idea of a blue and teal combo, which looks effortlessly chic. Or, why not switch up your dining furniture? If you’re up for the challenge you could get creative and paint your plain wooden chairs a striking blue shade that’ll make an instant statement in your kitchen. 76 homestylemag.co.uk

White wash Purple, green and blue all have a cool undertone and sing against a white backdrop. If you’re nervous about introducing these tones into your space, why not paint the walls white and style the room up with cool-toned furniture and accessories? If you’re feeling a bit braver, you could opt for blue, purple or green flooring to make a bit more of a statement. Oversized artwork is also a great way of adding a certain colour or tone to your walls without having to get your paintbrush out. Remember what frames you choose are important, too!

TRUE BLUE Out of the Blue matt emulsion, £34.99 for 2.5L, Dowsing & Reynolds

IN THE NAVY Napoleonic Blue chalk paint, £19.95 for 1L, Annie Sloan

Expert advice Crown Colour Specialist Kathryn Lloyd talks about colour selection ‘Blue is a short wavelength colour, and is thought to be ‘intellectual’, it tends to affect us mentally by provoking thought, communication and concentration. As a guide, warm colours such as red, orange and yellow are considered to be stimulating while cool colours such as blue and green tend to be more restful. It’s good to know this when designing spaces we live and work in. Warm colours make a room feel more welcoming while cool colours have the opposite effect and alter our perception of the temperature of a specific space.’

WARM TONES Turn up the heat with warm-toned reds, pinks and oranges

Go tonal

Create a seamless look by using a colour in multiple different shades and hues. The warm colour palette is a great option for this as it evokes images of the sunset, instantly making you feel more calm and relaxed. Not only this, but pinks, burgundy and burnt oranges are

massively in right now, and we totally get why. Pair with rich materials such as velvet so the warm tones work harmoniously together to create a cosy and welcoming room scheme. Don’t forget to add an abundance of texture with soft furnishings, such as cushions, throws and rugs to add to the feeling of warmth. REALLY RICH Get inspired by this hot and fiery look from Wayfair

Power of orange

Orange is an invigorating colour, therefore it’s an ideal choice for a living area. Dusky orange tones make a room feel warm and cosy, and can transport you to a place of serenity. For this reason, this shade lends itself perfectly to boho styling – incorporate lots of texture, raw materials and bold artwork, which are all trends in their own right, and can be easily found on the high street. Remember to look in vintage shops, too. 78 homestylemag.co.uk

Spice it up

When talking about the warm colour palette we have to mention Dulux’s Colour of the Year, Spiced Honey. The inspiration behind the shade was to turn the home into a cocoon, a space outside of society and all of the problems that comes with current affairs. We love the concept behind the colour and how well it works with other tones and hues. Using Spiced Honey as a continuous colour throughout your living space is not only a look that we love, but we also really enjoy seeing the colour paired with a dusky pink, for a muted match made in heaven. How you colour match is completely up to you!

HOT STUFF Spiced Honey matt emulsion, £20 for 2.5L, Dulux

SUNSET VIBES Red Earth emulsion, £46.50 for 2.5L, Farrow & Ball

Expert advice Fearne Cotton explains what warm tones can do for our homes ‘Dulux’s Colour of the Year, Spiced Honey, is a colour that brings so much comfort and warmth, which is so important in our home. It’s a very optimistic shade. It makes you feel cheerful and because life is always so busy it helps me to keep looking forward. To have a colour that has that power is quite special. It’s about how the colour makes you feel and how it connects you to your surroundings in a way that’s meaningful for the way you live your life. In terms of the warm colour palette, for some it could be a deep shade of red or a rich burgundy. It’s whatever you feel it is. For others, relaxation might be a light colour like a soft grey or a pink. Having warm and rich tones in our homes is a really lovely way to relax and reconnect.’

CONTRAST COLOURS What shades are opposite but attract? We break it down for you

Mix muted tones If you’re into colour blocking but not so much vibrant colours, you can create a similar effect with more of a muted colour palette. Create a striking feature wall behind a bed by painting blocks of contrasting shades. Use a standout colour such as a true green for an accent that BLOCK PARTY Narrow Lane; Forest Festival; White Cotton; Spiced Honey matt emulsion, £20 for 2.5L, all Dulux

will make the room pop. Our favourite contrasting colour combos that work well dulled down into more subtle shades are red and green and blue and orange. Pink as a derivative of red complements a range of other shades and is an ideal backdrop for other colours. Pink and red are having a serious moment right now!

WORK HARD Green wire memo board, £10; Stockholm storage drawers, £22; Stockholm date block, £8, all Argos

Monochrome contrast Black and white are not present in the colour spectrum, however as we widely recognise them as colours that we use in our homes, we think it’s important to mention monochrome as a successful combination. The contrast of light and dark is what brings life and dimension to a space, and paired with a pop of colour can create a truly inspiring room scheme. In terms of paint, a horizontal half and half scheme is aesthetically striking and fairly easy to achieve. All you need is a spirit level and some masking tape and you’re good to go. Make sure you invest in a high quality tape though to avoid any paint bleed. Remember to mimic this contrast with your furniture, too. If you’re inspired to create a monochrome office space, opt for a white desk and furniture and pair it with a black office chair.

Style advice

Expert advice Martha Roberts of The Colour File decodes opposing colours ‘Although you may naturally gravitate towards cool or warm, the best thing is to create balance by incorporating elements of both. For example, a room can be made cosy using warm colours but with a few cool colours in the form of furniture, soft furnishings and pictures, this contrast will help to create a pleasing balance. There are various ways you can combine colours in an interiors setting, from a monochromatic theme through to a rainbow effect. A striking look is a complementary scheme, which uses direct opposites on the colour wheel, such as yellow and purple, blue and orange or red and green. Being opposites, they complement and bring out the best in each other, automatically resulting in a strong and energetic effect in a room.’

Primary colours

Red, yellow and blue are all primary colours. In short, a group of colours from which all others can be achieved by mixing. In their pure form, they naturally remind us of our youth and therefore provoke feelings of happiness. If you want to create a playful and joyful home, this may be the colour scheme for you. To make a real statement, paint your skirting boards and ceiling the same bright colour as your walls. May 2019 81

My room... My problem kitchen

Hi, I’m Britt Ellice and I live with my husband Mark and our daughter in a four-bedroom townhouse on the Essex/ Hertfordshire border.

‘A few tweaks has made it much more our style’

How I made it work I created a moodboard of the kitchen I wanted, and then used some upcycling tricks and made a few changes to help transform it from a dated and oppressing space to a vibrant, modern room inspired by nature.

A bit about me

We bought our house in 2009 as a new-build and were hugely disappointed to find it was fitted with a kitchen that we hated. Our dilemma was how to make it work for us without spending a fortune or ripping out something that was brand new.

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home Go shopping with an open mind. ‘I don’t shop for speciic items, but I know my style so I only succumb to bargains that I know will work in my space which makes for a more cohesive look,’ says Britt. Her new kitchen was inspired by the elements. The scalloped, wave-like detail on the cupboards gives a watery seaside feel, the glossy white tiles remind Britt of clouds and the worktops add an earthy touch.

Avoid off-thepeg designs. ‘We found a brilliant company called Naked Doors that customised our kitchen cupboards with a scallop design and then painted them in Farrow & Ball’s Of-Black. I love them now! I then added brass handles I found on Amazon to match the lighting and sockets,’ says Britt.

Get creative with materials. Adding texture rather than colour can work well to create interest in a space. Britt laid the tiles in a vertical herringbone pattern to add height. The worktop also has a central line where the wood is laid diferently at each side. A giant chalkboard makes for a fun feature; the family write a menu on here when they host bufet-style gatherings with family and friends. 90 homestylemag.co.uk

Style idea Using a large piece of art can help ground a space

Kitchen makeover ‘I painted the piece above the dining room table using the sample pots I had bought for the space so it its in beautifully,’ says Britt

Britt uses lots of natural materials in her styling; wood and plants bring a calm, grounded feel to the room

‘I regularly find amazing bargains in HomeSense and TK Maxx’ My experience… It was so frustrating to have bought a brand new home and to have been completely left out of the kitchen design process. The space as a whole worked well, we liked the open-plan layout, and the French doors leading out on to the patio which gave us both indoor and outdoor living opportunities, but the kitchen area felt dark, dreary and dated. We love to entertain and cook for our family and friends so it had to feel like a room that we wanted to spend time in. We didn’t have a big budget and I couldn’t justify completely ripping out a brand new kitchen so I spent a lot of time thinking about how best to make changes. The first thing I did was to start a moodboard on Pinterest, creating my dream kitchen. I studied my ideas and looked at how I could bring elements into my kitchen on a budget. I love open shelving so we took out most of the wall-mounted cupboards, leaving one to hide the boiler, which immediately opened up the room. We replaced the dark worktop with a lighter Ikea wooden one and used the off-cuts to create the scaffold-style shelving. We then replaced the remaining cupboard doors, sourced new handles and painted a giant chalkboard along the dining side of the kitchen cabinets. Finally, tiling the kitchen walls in a pale coloured, herringbone pattern has created interest and bounces the natural light around the room.

We now have a bedroom to be proud of Sleeping in a dated bedroom, Julie Doyle decided enough was enough and set about designing her dream room

My room... My problem bedroom The built-in bedroom furniture was dated and impractical. Everything was inherited from the previous owners and because of the shape and lack of funds this was the last room on our makeover schedule.

How I made it work

Feature and styling Zoe Bishop Photos Lizzie Orme

A bit about me I’m Julie Doyle, and I live with my husband Richard, our daughter, and dog Archie in a detached four-bedroom home in Orpington, Kent.

I liked the idea of turning the alcove into a small walk-in wardrobe area. I also decided to make the most of the en suite and introduce statement flooring. We called in a local building company Edwards Building & Glazing to do the bathroom as Richard and I wanted the work done quickly and professionally. We painted and wallpapered ourselves.

My favourite part

Before Before 94 homestylemag.co.uk

I love the wallpaper, we’ve had several comments that it must be a real wood panelled wall. I also adore my little dressing table too, it’s the perfect place to get ready and the bathroom flooring was a brilliant find – it really packs a punch!

Style idea Add impact with a strong feature wall

Bedroom makeover Layer up a bed with throws and cushions to add texture. Pops of neon look great in a neutral setting

‘The addition of neon in a Scandi scheme can really bring it to life’

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home Introduce texture and pattern. ‘The key to a good Scandi look is being able to include pattern and texture. I wanted to keep the room neutral, but went to town with geometric bed linen and some funky colour coordinated cushions which work really well against the wood-efect wallpaper,’ says Julie. You can also add prints to the wall or on bedside tables.

Maximise a small space. Faced with an awkward alcove which didn’t make the best use of the space, the couple added a small walk-in wardrobe with storage from Ikea. The clever use of drawers and wardrobes means it now stores all of the couple’s clothes and shoes, while a bi-fold door hides it away when not in use.

Get creative with accessories. I love all these fun and useful belly baskets that are on the high street at the moment. As well as one from Next, I was lucky enough to ind a couple at a local charity shop, so to help them work with my colour scheme I made some pom poms with my daughter, and then simply stitched them to the basket,’ says Julie. 96 homestylemag.co.uk

Bedroom makeover Simple white bedside tables from lkea blend well with the room. Practical table lights in a copper inish also work well in a Scandi-style room and are bang on trend

‘I’m so pleased with this finished space, it’s a big improvement’

Style idea Make your own space-saving dressing table area with a shelf and brackets

Julie wanted a modern scheme with very little clutter, but it also needed to be welcoming and relaxing

My experience… We moved in to our detached house three years ago and although it was livable, it had previously been rented out so was lacking some TLC. The bedroom and en suite was problematic, I just wanted a space that was relaxing and functional. We spent a weekend removing all of the old fitted furniture and the professionals set to work on the bathroom. We decided that after some research the alcove could be turned into a small walk-in wardrobe and we bought some cupboards and drawers from Ikea then carefully fitted them into the space, creating hanging rails, drawers and shelving. The builders were able to hang a bi-fold door so it would all be closed away. It was the perfect answer to the dead space that was proving difficult to incorporate, and I’m so pleased with the finished look. We found a shower, toilet and sink online and had new wall and floor tiles fitted from Tile Mountain. I then added some colour with neon towels and accessories. Back in the bedroom, we decided on a Scandi scheme and I found a brilliant whitewashed wood-effect wallpaper that we’ve used on the wall behind the bed. Overall the room feels bigger and much more practical and I have an en suite to be proud of.

WAYS TO BE MORE

eco-friendly at home There are plenty of things we can do to help the environment – here’s how to get started

W

e all want to do our bit to help save the planet and stop climate change, and there’s no better place to start than at home. Our guide will give you some top tips on how you can cut back on your carbon footprint, make the right choices and save money, too.

1 Ditch the plastic

Avoid unnecessary plastic by shopping for loose fruit and vegetables or choosing recyclable paper bags. Instead of clingfilm or foil for wrapping up the leftovers, use Bee’s Wrap – sustainable food storage, which is reusable as well as fully biodegradable and compostable. Sandwich wraps are priced at £18 for three from aplaceforeverything.co.uk.

Feature Hayley Gilbert

SLEEP SOUNDLY Happy Beds’ cardboard bed is 100% recyclable and vegan. It comes in cardboard, blue, black or white, and prices start at £99.99

2 Pick eco brands

Next time you’re shopping for homewares or furniture, look for ecofriendly companies and products. These days you can find everything from eco mattresses and duvets to cushions, rugs, curtains and window blinds, SOFT TOUCH many of which Eco duvet are made from from £45 for a single, recycled plastic The Fine Bedding or rattan, Company sustainable wood or even cardboard. And they look pretty stylish too, so that’s a win-win.

Top Tip Choose eco paints such as Earthborn when you fancy giving rooms a little refresh. They are breathable, non-toxic and available in so many gorgeous colours.

Expert advice NATURAL STYLE Banbayu is a UK-based fairtrade interiors brand where every item is made with ecologically sustainable materials and an ethically verified manufacturing process. Mandisa bench, from £92.99; Mandisa shelf ladder, £38.99; Aldine rug, £27.99; Dalia flowerpot, £72.50

3

Pot some plants

4

Get a smart meter

Bring the outdoors in with some potted plants, ferns, succulents or on-trend cacti, and convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, making your home healthier. Houseplants can help to naturally purify the air in our homes, removing some of the harmful VOCs and contributing to a general feeling of well-being. Display on windowsills, open shelving or simply dot around rooms and enjoy their natural beauty.

Most energy companies are currently rolling out smart meters, which are free to install and will allow you to monitor energy use while saving money at the same time. Rather than manually reading the electric and gas meters and sending the results off, a smart meter does this automatically, so you’ll only pay for what you’ve used and you can see which appliances and gadgets are guzzling up energy, too. SMART HOME Wiser Thermostat kit, from RRP £139.99, Drayton

THINK GREEN Style Studio’s Greenscreen Sea-Tex blinds are made from recycled plastic sea waste. Prices start from £92 for 61cm x 61cm

5

Reuse and recycle

Whenever you’re thinking about chucking something out, whether it’s a tired old chair or a dated coffee table, why not upcycle it instead? Give worn furniture a fresh new look by sanding, painting or varnishing, or if you’ve fallen out of love with the style of it, advertise it on your local freecycle pages if you really can’t find a home for it. And next time you’re heading out to the shops, check out local auctions, boot sales and salvage yards for recycled finds. May 2019 101

6 Switch to LEDs

Last September the humble halogen bulb stopped being available to buy but many households still haven’t made the full switch as the phase out is still occurring. LED bulbs last 15 times longer than halogen and use 80% less energy too so you’re saving money as well as electricity. According to Philips, we could save at least £112 a year by making the BRIGHT IDEA switch! Visit lighting.philips. Premium LED co.uk to see how much Vintage filament you could save. bulb, £14.99, Philips

7 Start composting

Making a compost pile at home keeps certain materials out of landfill, which takes up space and releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. To start one, choose a suitable outdoor spot and either opt for a closed bin or a container. Collect scraps from the kitchen and garden (fruit, veg, old newspapers, dry leaves) and make sure it receives both water and oxygen every now and then to prevent nasty smells and help break it all down. Pretty soon it turns into soil, which can be used on flower beds and veg patches.

LIGHT FANTASTIC Tallie Easyfit light, £40, Debenhams

9

Buy smart tech

As well as smart thermostats, you can now bring smart lighting, switches, security, music and window treatments into the home, all of which can be controlled via voice control devices or a handy app. There are also connected appliances such as Wi-Fi operated washing machines, dishwashers and ovens, all of which allow you to be fully in control of how and when everyday essentials are turned on and off.

8

10

Save water

Reducing our water consumption is a quick and easy way of cutting back on our water and energy use. Things to try at home include switching to an eco mode on the shower, showering for shorter periods, reducing water flow, switching to half load or eco cycles on the washing machine and dishwasher and swapping the kettle for a boiling water tap. You’ll only use the exact amount of water needed and won’t be wastefully boiling a full kettle every time you fancy a cup of tea.

102 homestylemag.co.uk

Go chemical-free

Companies such as Ecover, Liquiproof Labs, Tincture, Bio-D and Method use plant and herb based ingredients rather than chemicals for their cleaning products. As well as being safer in homes with children and pets, natural alternatives are made using sustainable manufacturing practices and are biodegradable.

SCRUB UP Electric showers are one of the most water and energy efficient options. The Amore shower from Triton is available in black, white or silver and is priced at £276.86

BETTER CHOICE The Ecover Zero cleaning and laundry range is priced from £1.60

I finally dared to go to the dark side! Despite her husband’s misgivings, Ellie O’Mahoney has transformed her dated bathroom with individual touches

My room... My problem bathroom

Feature and styling Stephanie Smith Photos David Giles

A bit about me I’m Ellie O’Mahoney, a journalist. I live with my husband, Mark, and our two children, in a Victorian terrace in south east London.

The bathroom we inherited was a real mishmash, with a worn out wooden floor, a toilet with a rotten wooden lid, a flimsy bath screen, a shower that barely worked and some strange ceiling lights which looked like they belonged in a kitchen.

How I made it work The bath itself was great as was the side panel, and the sink was fine and in keeping with the age of the house. Knowing I could keep them meant there was a budget for a new shower, toilet and plenty of paint. And I could utilise Mark’s considerable DIY skills!

My favourite part

Before Before 106 homestylemag.co.uk

I absolutely love the dark walls and the panelling, they cocoon the room and make it feel comfy and relaxing. It’s not a huge bathroom, but I made a decision to be really bold with the colour.

‘We proved that walls can be darker than the floor!’

Bathroom makeover Dramatic colours, vintage panelling and industrial lighting have combined with high-quality ittings to produce an individual bathroom with plenty of style

Style idea If you’ve got a low ceiling choose spotlights and wall-mounted lights rather than a pendant

TOTAL

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home Choose colours that complement. Opt for towels that echo tones in other parts of the room. A wire shelving unit placed high up on the wall with hooks underneath is a handy place to keep and display them. Easy to it panelling can be painted a contrasting colour to the walls to really highlight the tongue and groove for a period feel.

Style idea

Add some industrial style.

Go for grey grout rather than white to make brick tiles in pale colours stand out

This look typically consists of raw materials but a simple cage light can instantly give the room a stylish warehouse feel. Ellie has also picked a carriage mirror that hangs over the basin to give it a retro touch and rather than ixing it to the tiles the section behind the mirror has been painted to make it easier to attach.

Introduce an eco touch. Consider using of-cuts of scafolding board or planks to create a wooden shelf like Ellie and Mark did as an alternative to a classic windowsill. Collect mementos from holidays like the shells Ellie has picked for a personal touch. They have also added an initial letter in a bright yellow colour to inject personality into the room. 108 homestylemag.co.uk

Bathroom makeover Splashing out on a sturdy folding shower screen gives plenty of opportunity for a powerful shower while ensuring no water goes on the loor

A dual use shower with a large head as well as a handset for hair washing or cleaning gives the best of both worlds

My experience…

‘I started out with the idea of a shocking pink floor, but it would have been too much’

With a second baby on the way, we desperately needed more space but we couldn’t afford it where we were previously living, in a 1930s terraced house in Brockley, south east London, so we started looking a bit further afield. We discovered you could get more for your money a few miles up the road and we also wanted a period property. I was six months pregnant with our daughter when we found this Victorian house. It needed a lot of care and attention, but we weren’t put off by that as we’d totally renovated our previous property from scratch. We pushed ourselves to get the extra bedroom so we could still have a spare room/office, knowing we’d be doing plenty of the work ourselves on a fixed budget. Luckily, Mark’s great at DIY and he’ll tackle most things. The bathroom was high on the list, as it was pretty unappealing and I didn’t fancy bathing the kids in there. But keeping the bath and sink helped us with the budget. I had in mind a bathroom which went with the age of the house, so panelling was always on my list, along with painted floors, and a dramatic colour. Mark sanded the floorboards and filled in the gaps with cork and painted over it. I wanted black walls, which when they were first done without any of the other bits and pieces scared Mark a bit, but I kept convincing him it would look great once everything was in and now we both love it.

Whisk together the flour, soya milk and salt in a bowl until smooth. Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Test if the oil is hot by adding a drop of pancake batter to the pan. Add 4 tbsp of the batter to make one pancake and swirl it around the pan to coat the base evenly. When the pancake is golden after 2-3 mins, carefully flip it over to cook the other side. Drain on kitchen paper then keep warm in the oven while you continue to cook the other pancakes, using 1 tbsp of the oil each time. Heat the oil in a separate frying pan over a medium-high heat and cook the mushrooms for 5 mins whilst stirring. Add the garlic and cook for a further minute. Vegan roasted carrot risotto Prep and cook time 1HR Serves 4 Ingredients Q 4 tbsp olive oil Q 2 onions, inely chopped Q 2 celery sticks, inely chopped Q 4 garlic cloves, 2 left whole with skins on, 2 crushed Q ¼ x 30g pack thyme Q salt Q Pack bunched carrots, trimmed, any large ones halved Q 300g risotto rice Q 100ml vegan-friendly dry sherry Q 1.25L vegan vegetable stock Q 3 tbsp four seed mix

Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C Fan/Gas Mark 7. Heat 3 tbsp of the oil in a saucepan over a low heat. Add the onion, celery and crushed garlic cloves. Pick the leaves from half the thyme sprigs and add to the pan along with a pinch of salt. Cover and cook gently for 10 mins. Meanwhile, place the carrots in a roasting tray with the whole garlic cloves and remaining thyme sprigs. Drizzle with 1 tbsp oil and season. Roast for 20-25 mins until just tender. Add the rice to the onion mix, stir for 2 mins to toast then increase the heat. Pour in the sherry and simmer until the liquid has been absorbed. Mix in the stock, one ladle at a time, stirring constantly and allowing the liquid to absorb before the next. Leave two ladles for later. Remove the roasted carrots from the oven and discard the thyme sprigs. Set aside 12 of the carrots to serve, keeping them warm. Add the rest of the carrots and garlic cloves to a blender with the remaining stock and blitz to a rough purée. Stir through the rice and cook for 3 mins. Add the seeds to a dry frying pan with a pinch of salt and toast for 2 mins over a medium heat, shaking the pan regularly to stop them burning. Serve the risotto garnished with the reserved carrots and toasted seeds sprinkled over.

Method

1

Preheat the oven to 180°C/Fan 200°C/ Gas Mark 6. Spread the squash on a baking tray, drizzle with the oil and toss to combine. While the squash is roasting in the oven for 20 mins, cook the macaroni to pack instructions. Peel and chop the onion in half and add to a pan with the milk, then gently heat until bubbling. Remove the onion and set aside. Melt the spread in a saucepan over a low heat then slowly add the flour, whisking until a paste forms. Then pour the milk into the paste, whisking after each addition until smooth. Once you have added all of the milk, bubble for 8 mins over a low heat, whisking occasionally. Stir in the Marmite and English mustard. Once cooked, mash a third of the roasted butternut into the white sauce. Season to taste. Drain the pasta and tip it into the sauce along with the rest of the squash chunks and the baby spinach. Stir gently to combine, then transfer the mixture to a large, ovenproof dish. Put the croutons in a sandwich bag and gently bash with a rolling pin until they are a crumb-like consistency. Place in a bowl and add a small splash of water, combine and leave to stand for a few mins. Dot the cherry tomatoes over the pasta and scatter the crumbs on top. Season, then bake in the oven for 20 mins.

Method

1

Sift the flour, salt and baking powder into the bowl of a stand mixer and whisk in the sugar and yeast. Add 100ml tepid water, followed by the soya milk and oil. Fit the dough hook to the mixer and mix for 10-12 mins until the dough is smooth and elastic. Put into a clean, lightly oiled bowl, cover with cling film or similar and leave to prove for 1 hr. Method

1

Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/Gas Mark 4. Cut each beetroot into six pieces, then put them in a roasting tin and sprinkle with cumin seeds, maple syrup and oil. Season well and roast for 25 mins. Alternatively, if you’re short on time, you can use vacuum-packed beetroot. Put the beetroot in a food processor, add the chickpeas, lemon juice and tahini, and blitz until smooth. Season with salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper. Spoon into the centre of a plate or a shallow bowl. Spread the mixture out to form a bowl shape. To finish, sprinkle with coriander leaves and dukkah spice, if desired. work surface, then, using your hands, roll it into a log shape and cut it into 10 equal portions. Roll each section of dough into a ball, then, using a rolling pin, roll each dough ball into a small oval. Lightly oil the top of each using your finger. Place each oval on a small square of parchment slightly bigger than the oval itself, on a lightly oiled baking sheet. Fold each oval in half over a lightly oiled chopstick. Cover the bao loosely with a lightly oiled piece of cling film, then leave to prove again. Meanwhile, make the pulled jackfruit filling. Put 1 tbsp oil in a frying pan over a medium heat, then add the jackfruit and fry until golden brown around the edges. Put the gochujang in a small bowl and stir in 200ml water, then pour this into the pan with the jackfruit. Cook the jackfruit until the sauce has reduced by half. Break the fruit down using a spoon to produce a pulled texture. Gently remove the oiled chopsticks from the bao and then use a fish slice to lay them carefully in a steamer. Steam for 10 mins until puffed and cooked through. Prise a bao apart and spoon in a little hoisin sauce, then top with the jackfruit, a little spring onion and a slice of cucumber.

Strawberry cake Prep and cook time 1hr, plus cooling time

Serves 8 Ingredients Cake

Q Butter, for greasing Q 4 large eggs Q 175g caster sugar Q 1 tsp vanilla extract or ½ tsp vanilla powder or paste Q 100g plain lour Q 40g cornlour or potato lour Q 1 tsp baking powder

Syrup Q 75g caster sugar Q 1 lemon, zest and juice Q 1 bunch of mint, roughly chopped

Filling Q 400g strawberries Q 2 tbsp caster sugar Q 250ml double or whipping cream

Q Dash of vanilla extract, powder or paste Q 1 small bunch of mint leaves (optional)

Method

1 2

Preheat the oven to 175°C/145°C Fan/Gas Mark 3.5 and move a shelf to the bottom. Grease and line a 24cm round, loose-bottom cake tin. To make the cake, whisk the eggs and sugar in a large bowl until pale and creamy. Add the vanilla. Mix the flours and baking powder in a small bowl, then fold into the egg mixture, carefully incorporating all the ingredients. Pour into the prepared tin and bake on the bottom shelf for 30 mins, until risen, golden and a cake tester comes out clean. Cool a little before releasing from the tin, then move to a wire rack to cool completely. Make the syrup by combining the sugar, lemon juice, zest, mint and 200ml water in a small saucepan. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved,

then bring to a simmer for about 5 mins. Cool completely before straining into a jug. For the filling and decoration, hull half the strawberries and chop. Place in a bowl with the sugar and mash together with a fork to form a rough, fresh jam. Halve the remaining strawberries, keeping their stalks on. Whip the cream quite loosely. Stir through the vanilla. Split the cooled cake in half through the middle. Trace the outline with a knife, all the way around the side, then use a long piece of strong thread to cut through the cake. To assemble, drizzle the bottom layer of cake with half the syrup. Spread with the strawberry jam and half the whipped cream. Top with the remaining cake layer and drizzle with more syrup. Decorate with the last of the cream, the halved strawberries and mint sprigs, if desired.

When we first moved into our house, it was incredibly dull and lifeless. Our living room in particular was an awkward and boring rectangular shape. We wanted a focal point for the room, so we added our own feature fireplace. We decided to go for jewel tones to lead and emerald green to complement, including this gorgeous armchair, then pulled the look together with dark Karndean flooring that imitates a parquet design. @overatno18

This bathroom was created by knocking through the old 1930s separate toilet and shower room, it forms part of the extension to create our family washroom. Naturally occurring properties of bamboo make our towels fabulous to use and kinder to your skin. Bamboo yarn towels keep you warm in winter and cool in summer, insulating according to temperature. These amazing natural properties mean that our towels don’t need to be washed at high temperatures, a cool or warm wash is fine. Our bamboo towels retain their softness as they dry, unlike cotton towels which dry naturally to a hard and stiff feel. Its natural antibacterial properties suppresses bacteria caused by sweat and waste! Stains do not smell therefore the towels are always clean.

IN CONVERSATION:

Lucy St George We speak to co-founder of Rockett St George, Lucy St George about her career I used to be a florist and would style arrangements for events. I loved the impact flowers made, adding instant drama to a room. This drive for creating wow-factor and showstopping pieces in a space extended to interiors. So, after spending hours trailing around antique fairs, rearranging furniture at home and generally driving our partners and children mad by continually redecorating, my friend Jane and I realised that it might be a good idea to join forces and make a career out of our passions.

What is your typical day like? Jane and I may have meetings with other brands for potential collaborations, we could be designing new products for our latest collections, visiting trade shows, or hosting Rockett St George events.

Tell us something weird and wonderful about yourself? I sneezed non-stop for a year, almost to the day. I was convinced that I was allergic to wine, I never stopped drinking it though!

How would you describe your style? My style is eclectic and strangely masculine. I love bold florals but my natural habitat tends to lean towards the dark side of the colour wheel.

most definitely never own or have in my life. I have a few hashtags that I stalk which include #airstreamcaravan, #gypsywagon, #blackkitchens, #fairgroundlights, #vintagesignage and #englishrosekitchens.

What is currently on your bedside table? Sadly, not a book. I only read when I’m on holiday. So, usually on my bedside table I keep my specs, a pile of jewellery, This Works sleep spray, a cup of tea or sometimes even a glass of wine!

Who would you swap homes with and why? I don’t think you could ever be totally happy in someone else’s home, it would be like wearing a different person’s outfit. But, I would love to live somewhere in the sun and preferably close to the sea. I am such a sun worshipper and always happiest when the weather is hot.

What is your proudest moment? Having a concession within Liberty London is by far the proudest moment in my career to date. It still gives me goosebumps when I walk into the store. It’s beyond my most wildest dreams.

What does this year have in store for you?

Who are you stalking on Instagram?

More exciting collaborations, a new interiors book and product ranges, including a selection of pieces that aren’t exclusively homeware.

If I told you, I would have to stop! I am more obsessed with items than people; aspirational things that I love but would
