I’m so excited for summer this year because I’ve finally got the outdoor sofa I’ve always wanted, which means I’m all fired up to get the patio set up like an open-air living room. I’m upcycling some side tables I found in the loft (lots of things didn’t make the cut when I bought a house with my parents and we merged our stuff…), I’ve rolled out a rug (it’s woven plastic, in case of a rosé spillage!), and dug out the rain-resistant cushions I bagged in last year’s summer sale at West Elm. There’s so much gorgeous garden furniture and homeware out this year, you really can create a space as stylish as your indoor living room. This issue is heaving with ideas and good-value finds, so enjoy getting creative! Fingers crossed for a summer as glorious as last year’s…

star role

‘i painted the pine fireplace grey for a more modern feel and added star ornaments’

Come on in!

About me i’m Lisa marvin, 46, a self-employed bid writer (@blue_ piccadilly). i live with my husband mark, 47, a property developer, and our border terrier Dexter. my home A three-bedroom thirties semi in exeter, Devon. We moved here in 2004. When We moved in the house needed complete refurbishment. the kitchen was tiny and the bathroom suite looked like it had been there since the thirties! And noW We’ve modernised right through, putting in a new bathroom and kitchen. i change things often, but there’s always plenty of colour. Style tip test before you invest! Lisa and Mark brought an unloved semi back to life with creative touches, accent colours and a blend of old and new

‘Pops of contemporary yellow help to pull the look togetherÕ

W

hen mark and i began discussing our next move, i didn’t have a particular type of house in mind as i like a mixture of different looks,’ says Lisa. ‘We’d renovated our current home and were ready to take on another project, so i was open to any possibilities. the handy location and potential of this house sold it to us, as it was a real “doer-upper”. sadly, all the original period features had been ripped out, and it was in quite a poor state inside, but that didn’t put us off. it was mostly cosmetic changes, with no major, expensive structural work to do, and we knew we could rise to the challenge and turn it into something special. We were determined to do as much ourselves as we could. We scraped off dated wallpapers and repainted walls, and Mark did some of the carpentry and plumbing. One of the worst jobs was pulling the old lino off the bedroom floors. They were so sticky underneath that the dog nearly got his paws stuck!

Getting started

Floor Finish

‘the old floorboards were too draughty, so we laid laminate through the hall, living room and dining area. it adds a nice sense of flow and works with whatever colours i’ve got at the time’

Our first big transformation project was to tackle the bathroom, where we redecorated and replaced the worn suite, but I was never totally happy with how it turned out. Home is really important to me and I’m constantly updating and refreshing rooms, so a couple of years ago, when the bath developed a crack, I took the opportunity to rethink the whole room. Second time around we didn’t bother with a bath and just had a big walk-in shower fitted instead, which suits our needs much better.

Ideas with a twist

I’d say my decorating style is eclectic, combining contemporary and vintage. I’ve got Scandi elements, bits of Thirties

idea to steal

‘Highlight the dining table with a statement light overhead’

add drama

‘I’m a fan of feature walls as a way of bringing colour or interest without dominating a space. Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue gives the dining area edge and impact’

Art Deco, high-street stuff, upcycled eBay finds and the odd quirky touch. If I see something I really love, I have to have it, like the amazing glass pendant light in the dining room, which is from Made.com. The coloured glass shades are stunning and it makes such a big statement. I’ve occasionally rushed into buying items that I’ve then gone off a few months later, so now I’ll take time and think carefully before I buy, and if it’s something expensive, I’ll search high and low for an affordable alternative. I shop at places like John Lewis & Partners, H&M Home and La Redoute, but I’ve also found some great independent sellers through Instagram, which I find fantastic for inspiration. I like seeing what other

18 | june 2019

people have done in their homes, but then I’ll put my own twist on an idea. It alerts me to new trends, too. I’d had my cute little drinks trolley for ages as it belonged to my gran, but suddenly they were everywhere on Instagram and I thought, “I’ve already got one of those!” so I dug it out.

Adding pattern I love colour but I don’t follow fashions too closely. I just go with what appeals and I always weigh up whether my existing things will work with a new palette, too. I’ve had lots of different colour schemes over the years and I’m into greys, blues and mustard yellows at the moment. The dining area was quite neutral until I introduced

white out

‘the new grey metro tiles and wood worktops have given my old white kitchen an inexpensive update’

‘MiniMise a dark floor with a large patterned rug to add light and interest’ the deep blue recently. I’m not brave enough to use it all over, so I’ve just painted a wall at each end of the space, but I like the crispness and I think the contrast of light and dark looks fab. I’m also a wallpaper fan. I’d always had paper in the hallway and going up the stairs, but the last time I changed it, I chose a more unusual, foxy design. Even though it’s not that big a space, I wanted to make a statement. The pattern is quite busy but it’s light, not too obvious and adds a bit of character. I take care not to let patterns overpower a room. Each bedroom’s got a little bit of wallpaper and they feel quite different from each other. The main bedroom, which is my favourite, is very restful but the guest room is more colourful and quirky.

Kitchen project The area where we’ve made the biggest change is the kitchen. Once we’d given it a thorough clean, it was liveable in the

short term, though it was cramped and dingy, as the wall tiles had been painted dark green, and if you opened the back door, it blocked the oven. We redesigned the whole space, extended out a little way, and moved the doorway into the room from the hall to the dining area, which improved the flow of movement. We then turned the old doorway into a window to allow more light into the space. The building process was fairly straightforward as our neighbour was also having work done, so we were able to use the same builders. Mark got involved too, helping with labouring, which speeded things up and saved us money. I chose a dark grey floor and plain white fitted

cabinets that I felt would make the most of the limited space. They went in about 12 years ago, and although I’d love a new floor one day, the cabinets are still absolutely fine. I’ve since upgraded the original laminate worktops with lovely oak and replaced the mosaic splashback tiles with simple, grey metro tiles, so the room looks more up to date.

Rest and Relax

‘in our bedroom i’ve mixed high-street and one-off finds. i spotted the bedside tables in a charity shop – they’re so slender and fitted the space perfectly’

Into the future

I’ve experimented with a few different looks and colour schemes since we moved here, and I’m certainly not finished yet. The next project I have in mind is to reconfigure the ground floor, perhaps knocking through the dining room

source faux sheepskin from a haberdasher’s; you will also need a wooden stool and a staple gun. Alternatively, you could cut up an old faux sheepskin rug, and use a glue gun to attach the fabric to the base of a plastic stool. Use wadding or toy filling and place on top of the stool, and staple it down to keep it in place. Lay the fabric over the stool to roughly cut it to the size needed, ensuring it overlaps. turn the stool upside down and place in the middle of the underside of the fabric. Pulling the fabric taut, use the staple gun to attach to the underside of the stool.

Downsizing gave Phyl and Paul the chance to try out open-plan living for the first time and put their DIY skills to the test

H

aving already moved once from our family home into a smaller property in the centre of town, we decided we’d like to downsize again,’ says Phyl. ‘the plan was to pay off our mortgage so that I could give up work and go to university to study fine art, just because I’d always wanted to. Plus, we wanted to release some capital to help our daughters purchase their own homes. As I unluckily fall into the age group of women who have had their pensions delayed, this also helped to supplement our income and gave us some money towards doing up our new home. Living minutes from the sea, with Southsea seafront a short walk away, was a big bonus for us, so we were keen to stay in the same area. We were originally going to buy a new-build flat, but at the last minute we decided the rooms were too small, and as we already had a buyer for our house, we urgently needed to find something else. This was the first place we saw when we started looking again and the location and the open-plan living space immediately sold it to us. We felt it had the potential to be a stylish and comfortable home for the two of us, plus it was within walking distance of all the shops, bars and restaurants.

Time to brighten up It was late August when the sale went through, and although the weather was fabulous, inside the flat felt dark, so Paul and I painted the whole place white and put white shutters on all the windows to give it a bright, clean look. We found a lovely light oak wood flooring in the sale for a fraction of the usual price, so we decided to buy it

‘the dining table is a vintage piece, bought from a local junk shop’

Our first major job was the kitchen as it was in a state, with old appliances and the sink and tap held together with tape! We chose a simple white gloss kitchen from B&Q and fitted it ourselves. The units were great value, but we paid extra to have an Earthstone worktop, also from B&Q, fitted to give it a more expensive feel, and we chose high-gloss splashbacks instead of tiles to continue the sleek look. Once finished, we could get on with fitting the flooring, which we laid throughout the whole flat (with a water-resistant version in the bathroom), to create the illusion of space and establish a cohesive flow between the rooms. The bathroom was the last room to be done and by the time we got round to it three out of four taps had broken! There was an unsightly waste pipe running

Kate gave a period house a modern twist using a mix of contemporary and vintage pieces, clever lighting, upbeat colours and distinctive artwork

W

hen my husband andrew and i first viewed this house back in 2012, it was dated, rundown and needed pretty much everything doing to it,’ says Kate, ‘but i fell in love with its period features, high ceilings and good light. and as renovation is my line of business, i wasn’t too worried about having to do all that work. We were keen to get cracking as soon as we moved in, so we drew up plans, chose a builder from a shortlist of three local companies and started work just before Christmas.

Big plans The kitchen was at the back of the house in an extension that was like a shed. It had no foundations and a narrow scullery leading off from it. Our plan was to create a large, light-filled kitchen-diner, so our first job was to demolish the shed and extend properly to the rear. We knocked down a wall to open up the scullery and part of the staircase and hallway to create one really large room. We chose bifold doors to maximise the light and in the summer, we open them out onto the back courtyard garden. The garden walls were painted white to create a Mediterranean feel and the result is a bright space that is practical and full of character, with a dining area that has a sunny, holiday vibe. I love that I can cook and keep an eye on the twins, Archie and Stanley, as they sit and eat, do their homework at the table or play outside. I also turned one of the walls in the kitchen into a big blackboard. The boys love it and

have been pretty good at not drawing on any other walls, thankfully!

Grown-up space Andrew and I decided to turn a room leading off from the kitchen into a more formal dining room for the two of us after the twins have gone to bed, and for entertaining guests. Our previous property was an open-plan flat, which didn’t work once the boys arrived. My

husband and I needed an adult space for ourselves, which you can’t have if you’re picking up toys everywhere all the time. So this is perfect as a family house.

The right lights I wanted to accentuate the property’s original features by adding a modern, slightly quirky twist. One of the key ways I tried to do this was through my use of strong lighting, which features in every

room. I particularly enjoy using naked bulb-style lights, which offer a modern take on an industrial feel. I think lighting should be a focal point rather than just there in a practical sense. It’s an area that is neglected by a lot of people.

Mix it up I’ve tried using my skills as an interior designer to combine our home’s original features with a mixture of vintage,

We used reclaimed parquet flooring for the kitchen and a period pattern for the floor tiles in the family bathroom. We also opted for shutters instead of curtains, to recreate a classic feel.

Put it to the test

It took a lot of time and effort to decide on the wall colours. It was so hard finding the right tone of grey for the dining room. They can often feel quite cold, which I didn’t want as this is already a fairly cold house rather than a sunny one. But then again, warm greys can have a purple tone, which I did not want either. So I used several sample pots until I found the

‘i love adding touches of colour here and there, and this group of vases in co-ordinating colours really adds to the look’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME i’m hayley thomas, 44, and i live with my husband mark, 45, and our two daughters, Daisy, eight, and four-year-old betty, in a thirties three-bedroom detached house in Warrington. MY CHALLENGE extending and reconfiguring the old-fashioned, dingy galley kitchen to create a bright, inviting family room with doors leading out to the garden and space for a large dining table. MY WISH LIST i really wanted an island where friends and family could congregate because i knew we would spend most of our time in here. i also wanted to incorporate a brick wall into the design.

Being in the right place at the right time meant that Hayley could buy her dream kitchen at a knockdown price

F

rom the moment i first saw this house i fell in love with it. the garden was big enough for a family and the interior had loads of potential,’ says hayley. ‘however, it needed to be totally updated and the dated kitchen was crying out for a complete overhaul. the original space was painted lilac and had a cold slate floor with just one window to let in the light, so it was a dark and unpleasant room to be in. I’m a stay-at-home mum and wanted the house to have an inviting space where we could all spend time together while I cooked dinner, but instead the girls would come home from school and sit in the living room where I couldn’t see them. So the kitchen had to take priority.

Forward planning We chose an architect who had already worked on similar properties in the area as we were confident he’d know what would work well within the space. He recommended building out to the side return which added an extra 1.5m to the room, and our builder suggested knocking down a connecting wall to a small utility to add more space and light. The layout of the kitchen came together quite naturally as we already knew we wanted the cooker and tall units running along the back wall with an island opposite. This would then leave space for a family dining table and a reading corner, and we could put doors to the garden along the side wall.

bRIGHT IdEA

‘i chose midnight blue Shaker-style cabinets, then added colourful bar stools and funky chrome accessories’

Managing budgets I had quite a clear vision of how I wanted the new kitchen to look. A decorative brick wall was my ‘must-have’ design element, though I worried it might be expensive, but our builder suggested using brick slips, which were easier

Why it works

Do it!

Bold ColouR sChemes Start with your key shade, such as the main wall colour or kitchen units, as this will help determine which colours to pair with it. use the colour wheel. Shades that sit diagonally on the wheel combine well for a bold contrast, colours that sit next to each other still have impact but work as a more subtle, softer combination. Saturated, vivid shades make a stronger impact alongside white backgrounds, making the room feel airier and allowing colours to pop. as a general rule, three key colours are an ideal mix but you can bring in softer shades of one of your chosen colours for variety. rethink where to use colour: cushions, wallpaper and window dressings are an obvious choice, but you can introduce colour with furniture, lighting and upholstery.

splash out

‘this Starburst design wallpaper was eye-wateringly expensive but we only needed a couple of rolls’

and cheaper to install than a new wall. I’d also seen a lovely peacock blue kitchen that I thought would complement the brick beautifully, but the quote was too high and I also had concerns that the colour might date. Then, while searching online, I came across the Wren Shaker kitchen in Midnight Blue, which Mark and I both loved, and which I thought might realistically stand the test of time better. We worried that it might still be pricey but when we went to enquire we couldn’t believe our luck as it was included in the Black Friday deals and all the units were half price. That left money over for the flooring, and although we still had to be careful with our budget, we found a local contractor who gave us a great deal on the parquet-effect planks.

Hard work

I can truly say it was hideous living in the house during the works with two small

children. There was dust and rubble everywhere, and the small front room became our only area for eating, relaxing, playing and socialising. We had a microwave for cooking and initially only a cold water tap in the utility for washing up, and we didn’t have a full working kitchen for about five months. I ended up going to bed with the kids at 8pm most nights to get away from it all and looking back I don’t know quite how we managed.

Styling the room

I was originally going to choose copper hardware to contrast with the blue kitchen units, but I wanted something less trend-driven. We decided to go for a more classic look, choosing stainless steel accessories such as the oversized Wayfair anglepoise-style lamp and the chrome pendant lights, which really finish off the room. The space is now just perfect and I can’t imagine ever having to change it.’

perfect pick

‘Blue is my favourite colour and i love our blue units, but i added zing by teaming with mustard accessories’

Hayley’s choice:

vinyL FLoorinG

Got your eye on Hayley’s fabulous floor? We’ve got the lowdown…

What is it made from?

The core material is a man-made synthetic called polyvinyl chloride resin (PVC). Vinyl flooring once contained harmful volatile ingredients that, understandably, put homeowners off but now it’s completely safe and can even be recycled.

Should I choose tiles or sheet vinyl?

Sheet vinyl, aka rolled vinyl, comes in one piece that’s cut to the size of the room. it’s typically the cheaper option, although the new breed of custom-printed sheet vinyl (try Zazous or atrafloor) is costlier but worth it. Standard rolls come in 2-4m widths, so you may need to suffer a join in big rooms. Vinyl tiles are rigid, and come in packs – some offer super-easy, stick-on

BEST FOR… ACCURATE MEASURING

Carpetright isn’t just about carpets, its nationwide stores stock a wide range of vinyl and offer free home consultations, including professional measuring.

REdUCEd MESS

Quick-Step’s patented uniclic Multifit system couldn’t be easier to install. using a tongue-and-groove system, the vinyl planks are laid without adhesive.

installation. luxury Vinyl Tiles (lVTs) are the top-end option, with prices ranging from £40-£165sq m. They offer excellent rigidity (no wrinkles) as well as insulation and sound absorption, and they work with underfloor heating.

How can I check for quality?

Thickness is a good indication of quality, for both sheet and tiled vinyl. Cheap sheet vinyl starts at 1.1mm-thick, which will make it pretty easy to fit but not terribly long-lasting. Go for at least 3.5mm. lVTs tend to measure around the 5mm mark. also look for anti-slip coatings, particularly in the kitchen and bathroom. amtico’s new urethane layer, Quantum Guard, enhances durability.

3 of the best

pATTERNEd vINyLS stick DOwn Sorzano Foliage vinyl floor tile, £19.99sq m, Zazous

Can I fit it myself?

Sheet vinyl can be cut with a Stanley knife and is pretty easy to fit in a standard room. Hone your skills on a small area first. Vinyl tiles are installed similarly to ceramic tiles and many come with click-fit edges that slot together jigsaw style. Preparing a flat subfloor is essential and a leveling compound or decent underlay is worth the extra expense.

Is it easy to maintain?

Cleaning is straightforward with a vacuum and mop. Use vinyl-safe floor cleaner – nothing abrasive – and wipe up any spills straight away. Protect the floor from chair legs with felt pads or castors.

The cupboard housing the water tank was the perfect place to squeeze one in, but doing away with that meant replacing the boiler, too. It made sense to crack on and tackle the job, as the house needed a new boiler because the old system couldn’t heat enough water to fill our lovely big bath.

Keeping costs down Our budget was around £5,000 so we got quotes for the labour – we used Checkatrade to find our builder – and then had to make the rest of the budget work for the fixtures and fittings. We shopped around (a lot!) and waited for sales. In fact that saved us around 20% on the toilet and sink. We were lucky that we didn’t need to factor in the cost of a new bath because we were keeping the existing one and we didn’t need to move any other plumbing in the room, which would have been expensive.

Deciding on colour

MONO PRINT.

‘I fell for the tiles as soon as I saw them and they formed the basis for the whole room scheme’

The one thing I wasn’t prepared to compromise on was the colour of the bathroom. I wanted at least one room in the house to be dramatically dark and the bathroom seemed like the perfect space to really go for it. I’m a massive Instagram and Pinterest fan so I trawled through them both looking for inspiring dark-coloured bathrooms, mainly to convince my husband that an inky blue was the way to go! I think that if you’re nervous about using strong colours the bathroom is a good place to start as you can make a real statement,

inky accents.

‘Painting the door the same dark colour gives the room an edgy twist’

particularly with the great selection of tiles and paint colours out there.

Choosing surfaces

the floor tiles were the first thing i chose – i love them. But we didn’t want to tile the walls fully, as this would’ve pushed up the budget and once tiles are there it’s expensive and difficult to change them. i was keen to find a solution that would last us a good few years. Having looked at lots of ideas we settled on timber panelling, as it was cost-effective and we can change the colour easily with a lick of paint if we want to. it’s also a good way to hide the exposed pipework in the room. we shopped around and sourced it from a local timber merchant, as it had the best prices and we saved a lot on delivery costs – it can pay to buy local! i was really tempted by wallpaper, too, as there are some fabulous statement designs around, but it wouldn’t have been practical with the steam from the shower.

The finer details

one issue we had to address was storage in the bathroom once the water tank cupboard became a shower, as we had nowhere to hide our clutter. a basin with a cupboard beneath solved the problem and we found there was a huge range to choose from in the shops. keeping to a budget meant we had to wait a while for the finishing touches like the artwork and a light we bought. now everything’s finished there’s nothing i would do differently. the best bit of the project was seeing the floor tiles go down, but bargain hunting for all the fittings was satisfying as well. in the end i think we've managed to strike a balance between style and function, without blowing the budget.’

wall panelling

Emma’s choice:

wall panelling

Enchanted by the Patersons’ smart painted panelling? It’s an easy look to achieve

What are the benefits of panelling? Besides looking fabulous, panelling is a quick-fix solution for uneven, patchy walls. As long as the plaster isn’t blown, and you’ve dealt with any damp, panelling can be popped right over existing walls for an instant neat finish. In the bathroom it makes a warmer alternative to tiles.

Does it have to be made from MDF? Wood is the traditional material used for wall panels but if you’re going for a more modern painted finish, MDF is much better value and is actually a very stable board. In high-moisture environments, like bathrooms, it’s essential to use Moisture

BEST FOR… PERIOD PERFECTION The english panelling Company offers five classical options, plus a bespoke design service – guaranteed to add a touch of grandeur to your walls.

KIT FORM Hare wall panelling has developed a slot-together kit for an easy-fit DiY solution that’s primed ready to paint.

Resistant (MR) MDF. Proficiently painted with an eggshell finish, it will cope admirably with splashes, but not total immersion, so don’t use it in the shower.

Can I install it myself? It depends on ability but there are plenty of panelling kits designed specifically for DIYers. These tend to be MDF-based (solid timber requires professional skills/ tools) and can be simply glued onto the walls using a ‘No Nails’ type adhesive. Things can get complicated if there are tricky alcoves and windows to work around so it may be worth hiring a local carpenter or handyman to ensure smart results – try ratedpeople.com.

a waterproof core makes this laminate maintenance free. nuance laminate wall panels, in weathered Chalkwood, £90sq m, Bushboard

How high should it be? The top of the panelling should sit either a third or two-thirds of the way up the wall. Dividing the wall in half can make the ceilings feel lower. Do work with existing architectural features – running panelling up to a picture rail is very effective – and think about the height of windows and sanitaryware. Don’t forget to include access panels to any isolation valves or cisterns for plumbing maintenance.

Any tips for a pro look? Most panelling specialists supply matching dado rails, which can be used to hide a multitude of levelling sins, leaving a crisp connection between panelling and wall. Installing skirting on top of panelling will do the same at floor level.

Sheet moss Wire wreath base, Dia40cm Potting mix Fine copper wire Selection of lobularia and thyme plants hook, for hanging Galvanized wire, 1mm diameter

1

Cover the wreath with moss Soak the root balls of all the plants in water for 10min. Lay pieces of moss on a table in a circular shape, with the green mossy side facing down. Place the wreath base on top of the moss and add more moss to cover both sides of the base.

3

Bind with Copper wire Push the end of the roll of copper wire under the wreath and twist it around itself a few times to keep it firmly in place. Wrap lengths of copper wire around the wreath, folding the moss over as you do so, to cover the base. Keep wrapping until the whole wreath is bound with moss.

How to

RePaiR YoUR teCh

Forked out a fortune on a phone and smashed the screen? Kids bashed the telly and it’s on the blink? Here’s how to fix your kit…

F

rom coffee cups to last year’s laptop, there’s no escaping the fact we live in a throwaway society, and although prices have dropped, making it tempting to simply buy new if something breaks, you can try to repair your appliances instead.

My TV has broken, given how cheap they are, is it worth getting it fixed? If your TV is more than eight years old, it is probably not worth repairing. Repairing an old-fashioned CRT television (boxy, not flatscreen) is hugely expensive these days. Modern sets can often be repaired – like a computer, parts can be swapped in and out – so call a local repair shop or the manufacturer for a quote. You may also be able to see what the fault is via the service/fault menu screen.

What if something breaks when it’s new?

How can I guarantee my stuff won’t break in the first place? It’s impossible to know whether an appliance will last for decades or not, but investing in a high-quality item usually ensures it will give you many years of service. One great example is Dualit’s Classic toaster – it may be expensive, but it can be easily repaired, and the company actually sells replacement elements and timers, so your investment should last decades. For more investment buys, check out buymeonce.com.

108 | JUNE 2019

BUY ANYTHING OVER £100 ON A CREDIT CARD.YOUR CARD COMPANY OFFERS FREE PURCHASE PROTECTION IF THE ITEM IS FAULTY, THE COMPANY WON’T FIX IT, OR IT GOES BUST BEFORE DELIVERY I’ve smashed yet another phone screen, where should I get it fixed? a cracked screen is not covered by a standard warranty, but lots of high street and online shops specialise in screen repairs (try Geek Squad for official repairs). Steer clear of unofficial thirdparty repair shops, however cheap, to avoid invalidating your warranty.

What about DIY repairs? That depends whether you’re handy with a toolkit (or tiny screwdriver) and don’t mind possibly invalidating your warranty. You’ll find hundreds of YouTube videos

and repair guides online, such as ifixit.com, which has step-by-step instructions for replacing everything from smartphone batteries to upgrading laptop memory.

Is gadget insurance worth it? If you’re prone to losing things, it might be an idea. Cover for a bundle of gadgets (satnav, camera, headphones) costs from £40 a year, but more expensive items, like a laptop, cost £100-150. Check your home insurance as some policies include gadget cover. For mobile phones, expect to pay £70-150 per year, plus around £100 excess, but do check your bank account as many lenders offer phone insurance as a freebie.

You can ask the retailer for a repair or refund, but only within the first 30 days of purchase. If it breaks within the first six months, and the retailer can’t prove that it wasn’t faulty at the point of sale, you’re entitled to a free repair or replacement. If they refuse, contact Trading Standards. Faults that occur after six months of use, provided you’re still under warranty, can be handled by either the retailer or manufacturer.
