A LETTER From The ediTor

is always very disheartening to read news stories about traditional arts and crafts of ndia dying due to modernisation and technological developments. Many beautiful andmade tales of India are on the verge extinction, and being replaced with machineade products. Being a part of the art and decor industry, we always promote good and it is also our responsibility to make people aware of what’s happening around us to traditional art forms and artists! Therefore as our tribute to Indian designs, designers, art forms, textures and patterns, we decided to dedicate our theme for May as ‘India Inspired’. Talking about my personal favourite, our story of five designers and brand owners who are not only promoting Indian designs but also taking it to many international platforms, across the globe. Also our style shoot at the newly opened Classic Furniture store is a celebration of pure Indian designs. From Madhubani artworks to Batik art on furniture, Jamawar carpets and artifacts in brass, we have tried to share these beauties of different eras in one feature story. When you are tired of decorating your space with yellow and adding a statement chair for some oomph, you need some me-time! We have got this sorted, with exotic heritage properties that sing the song of India’s rich culture and diverse architecture. Do not miss out the House Of The Month pages that showcases a newly renovated bungalow of ‘50s by a Delhi based design firm. With a brief to design a Manhattan plus New England look, the exterior of the house will amaze you as much as the interiors! With this and many more...keep reading, and don’t forget to follow and engage with us on social media platforms.

Perfect solutions for you and your child

Visual Appeal TIHG is one of the best magazines that I have come across. A complete magazine - appealing visuals, reader-friendly articles, life-size images and above all it covers every aspect of a home. What attracts a reader to the magazine is the visually delightful cover. Over the years TIHG has undergone a major transformation both in terms of content and layout. The magazine has also gone international by showcasing homes from across the border. Looking forward to more meaningful years with power packed articles. Harshita Manwani, New Delhi

Feel Good As a family we are a big fan of TIHG. It was the year 2013, I first had a glimpse of the magazine at a book stall. What attracted me was the November anniversary cover. Slowly flipping the pages, I realised that TIHG was a bit different from the other home décor magazines of the block. Over the years the magazine has undergone a lot of transformation. It has a feel and look of an international magazine. My favourite section is Ideal Getaway. Every issue has new faraway destinations. It would be nice if there is a travelogue section for travel crazy readers. Also, it would nice I more beautiful homes could be featured. Anish Kidwai, Navi Mumbai

Food and Travel

Kiddie Zone The kids special was really a very special issue. Cover Focus Plus was charm personified. The article actually went ahead and broke the age-old norm that pink is for girls and blue is for boys. The visuals gave plenty of ideas on how a room can be designed for kids irrespective of the gender. The clean and clutter-free rooms are literally a treasure trove. Ideas galore – thanks TIHG. Mrinalini Deshmukh, Mumbai

I am a foodie and a travel enthusiast. I love to travel to new destinations and see new places. For me TIHG is the right magazine, which not only gives me travel goals, but also lets me know which are the best destinations for a foodie. I have a request - can the team dedicate more pages for the food section. Also, a Q&A section with leading chefs from across the country would do wonders. The Ideal Living section is my favourite – the lavish homes, the charming interiors, the colourful pictures all add to the element of elegance. Please do try and cover homes from small cities and towns. India has some amazing homes in small corners waiting to be explored.. ustic, crisp and a pop of colour creating a lively and a fun-filled space, is what best describes Casa Blanca, a perfect weekend getaway. The entire villa has a very renaissance feel to it. Sapana Jain, Principal Designer, I Heart Homes says, “I personally love working with different shapes, colours and textures, which is very prominent for both the exteriors and the interiors of this vacation home. The moment you step into the house, the first two things you will notice are the wall paintings and the artwork, which is all hand painted. Each corner of the house has an artistic vibe to it. Casa Blanca is a two-storeyed four bedroom villa, which includes a kids play area and a recreational zone, which includes a poker table for adults along with a dance floor and a DJ console. There is a small library to flip through the books. However, the cherry on top is the outdoor pool that comes with a bar, which simply cannot be ignored. Tihg

all them functional art or artsy furniture, veteran architect Samira Rathod has introduced a distinct range of furniture pieces under the brand name Big Piano, which will bring a certain kind of unique rawness and functionality to a space. The pieces, which are inspired from the art of moving things, are crafted using a multitude of materials such as wood, glass, steel, copper, brass, marble, acrylics as well as fabrics and paper. Material and function meld together here. Old recycled woods are chiselled to make forms, fitted with little bits of metal to allow locomotion and then massaged with the oils to an endearing perfection. TIHG

Made In IndIa

Masters in their craft, building a niche with their one-of-a-kind products, these designers have been making India proud even before the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Let’s get up, close and personal with them... Impressions: Shruti Jain

HITESH SHArMA (SoLID BENcH) Hitesh was always particularly fascinated with the subject Engineering and Machine Design. More specifically about the drafting part of it. The designer still remembers holding the school record for making the knuckle assembly joint drawing in about 25 minutes using the good old drafter and a single pencil. An engineer and a B school grad, Hitesh does not have any formal education in the field of design. His partnerAnant- and him started Solid Bench in 2015 with the idea of using the best in class raw material, processes, human skills and honest intentions. They started the furniture design and carpentry studio after reading about George Nakashima and his work. It took them about 2 years to understand wood as the primary raw material for their products. While they take life time guarantee for their work for a lot of their products, they essentially want to be known as a slow, patient fine woodworking studio. Solid Bench’s aesthetic sense is very minimal and organic. As a general practice they have shied away from using shiny, artificial material in their products. The furniture is about fine wood working joints and traditional

working of working and they like to work with the same. Their project with Louis Vuitton holds a special place for him. “To be chosen by them, that too when we were very young in this field of wood working was a very nice experience for us,” the designer proudly states. Dabbling between being new to the field and making a significant mark in the industry, Hitesh finds time for his Bonsais which he is very fond of and have been cultivating for a few years.

reshmi started exploring with Glass in Firozabad, and after gaining some practical knowledge from various factories, she realised that she wanted more than just trading of glass products. So she went ahead to get her formal education on Glass craft, design and art in UK for two years before she started to travel all over Europe and the USA in quest of learning about Studio Glass Art. This is how Glass Sutra came about to be. Today Glass Sutra is India’s first and only public access glass art studio that shares the beauty and knowledge of studio Glass Art. They offer bespoke, handcrafted & functional art in the form of lighting, wall art, abstracts, decorative limited edition pieces and individual, small interesting pieces of art. Her work reflects in her belief that when one’s narration of design is based on a strong story/ subject it becomes art. “First, I am a glassmaker by profession and then a designer. I would like to call myself a creative person who sees design, craft and art as instruments to realise my ideas,” says the designer when asked whether she

is a designer by profession or passion. When not exploring around her craft, she likes to travel, particularly to extend her knowledge on red wine, which she has been studying for over 12 years. Her prefered wines are from grapes Sangiovese, from chianti, Italy, Montepulciano d’ Abruzzo, Tuscany and Zinfadel from Sanoma Valley, cA The Ideal Home and Garden May 2019 |

ISHrAT SAHGAL (MISHcAT co) Ishrat started dreaming and planning of what she wanted to do all the way back in rhode Island School of Design while doing her graduation. Mind-mapping and researching things that she’s passionate about eventually lead her to put the pieces together and pencil the design philosophies of Mishcat co, and her interior architecture practice. Besides their one-of-a-kind hand knotted sari silk carpets that are made from upcycled saris and hand knotted wool and wool and sari infused carpets, they also have a design consultancy based around this for Mishcat co- where they suggest elements based on the chosen carpet. Ishrat also has completed full scale interior spaces including Upstairs club (chandigarh), cafe Kothi (Jaipur) and caparo HQ (New Delhi). one of her biggest achievement was being a part of the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list in 2018. However the designer feels that she achieves a little more every time a client sends a happy message or photo. She believes that designing is an art and considers herself a designer by profession

and passion, both. According to her, the design and the product is completely interlinked. “For Design, you have to design a product for it to be created. For a Product, you have to research and find what you’re eventually going to be creating to redesign- or design- it,” explains Ishrat. When not creating something, she loves to travel, eat, spend time with her family and goof around with her husband Manav, or exploring and looking for inspiration everywhere!

rooSHAD SHroFF (rooSHAD SHroFF) It’s been seven and a half years since rooshad moved back to India after completing his Architectural education from cornell University and his Masters from Harvard. Though trained as an Architect, he started looking at furniture as a tool to experiment and explore. During this period he travelled around a lot and saw many crafts that were happening in India, which earlier while growing up he was totally oblivious about. As he started working, he got more interested in these crafts and also the use of the handmade and realised the potential they hold. The possibility of working with one or two mediums allowed him to do a lot of research which led him to experiment with a lot of carpentry and wood working with traditional embroidery as a medium of service treatment.

Even though he has now entered the world of interiors, he says that furniture is something that is a constant and is still a large section of his practice. rooshad thinks that he is been fortunate to meet clients who believed in his vision and have been open to experimentation. He truly believes that process is fundamental; whether it’s in interior, architecture or furniture. Though he is always hustling, rooshad does have quite a travel bug which is what he is doing when he is not working. Any amount of free time- a weekend or a few days- he is always traveling. It acts as both an inspiration and a good exposure to what’s happening in the world for him. The Ideal Home and Garden May 2019 |

ave you been dreaming of your dream closet for as long as you can remember? Or drooling over the super-stylish way bloggers and influencers house their beautiful clothing, shoes, and bags? The fact is we love browsing the internet for insane glam rooms and closets that are larger than our entire apartments, but, sometimes we just need some realistic inspirations and tips. You don’t have to spend a fortune to have the closet of your dreams. You just need to get crafty! Decide how big or small you need your closet to be before you start on the design. It’s tempting to see a big, blank wall and sacrifice it to a closet without considering what the contents would be. Focus on ergonomics. If you have lots of long-hanging clothes, the whole bottom of the closet can become a no man’s land. Group your short hanging pieces at one end of the closet and the long-hanging clothes at the other-that will open up lots of floor space, where you can place a little dresser or a stacking show rack. Place a hutch in the centre of the closet to naturally divide things from business to casual, and clearly define a separate frame of mind while working with your wardrobe.

Including drawers in your closet system can reduce the amount of furniture in the rest of the bedroom, offering an open and uncluttered space to rest and relax. Think about your keys,

Adding a dash of yellow is one of the easiest ways to give a room instant luminosity. The carefully chosen yellow accents like the sideboard table, classic chairs, sofa throw pillow and yellow accessories on open kitchen shelves add the much-needed brightness and life to the home. If you are looking to use yellow colour in your lights, then be very careful - too much yellow lighting can make the interiors look ugly and shabby. Yellow lighting

can be used in linear profiles, bathrooms or areas where you have to lit up a few pieces of artefacts. Keeping some amount of yellow in your decor is always advisable! It is as mentioned earlier, a very eye-catching colour. Having yellow either on the walls, on your chair, a rug, a sofa can fill the room with a lot of positivity as yellow indicates liveliness. Thus the right balance of yellow is a must in every home decor. Camouflage is a timeless pattern and one must try yellow to enhance the beauty of its results. forms. Danielle is very much inspired by nature - her prime subjects being plants, animals and human portraits that prove to be far more expressive than one might expect from the rustic craft. Her work proves that any medium is simply a means to an end when one possesses the imagination and craft to execute their visions. The Ideal Home and Garden May 2019 |

eredith Woolnough is a visual artist from the coastal town of Newcastle, Australia. Her sculptural embroideries capture the power, beauty and fragility of nature in knotted threads. She employs a freehand embroidery technique that utilises a domestic sewing machine and a base fabric that dissolves in water. By repeatedly stitching threads into dense structures, Meredith creates intricate and complex stitched specimens that are then carefully suspended on pins, casting delicate shadows. Her latest work explores themes of environmental degradation and inter-connectedness, drawing inspiration from the natural forms found in various leaf and coral structures. She exhibits her artwork locally and internationally, and her work resides in both public and private collections worldwide.

She collaborated with the ninth or tenth generation of Ajrakh artisans who migrated from Sindh and Balochistan in 1600 CE, but still carry on with ancient textile traditions of printing and dyeing in Bhuj, Gujarat. They work with Indigo and other natural colours. Invoking such traditions, she brings together khadi as a fabric, Ajrakh textile traditions and skills of the craftspeople by giving her own interpretation in a visual form. Working with various media and excavating from history, her art celebrates time.

he partners in life as well as business have one thing in common. They are design and art lovers. Therefore, even after retiring from their former occupation, they decided to work towards their passion. Both have an inclination in the business of renovation and that’s why their firm Studio Margeza purchases old apartments, redesigns them, and puts the home for sale again. The couple’s apartment is situated in the historical centre of Budapest, in a building that was built in 1928 and was divided into four apartments. Showcasing the most beautiful view of the city such as the iconic building, the Parliament and the river that splits the city, the husband-wife duo’s clever consideration was to show this off beautifully. “We decided to follow one rule that let’s not conform to any rules. However, the characteristics of Margeza style can be seen everywhere: joyful, energyfilled colours that give an atmosphere of happiness,” smiles Margit. But was it easy to achieve what they have in their home today? “The major challenge was to get professionals who can work as high as we were expecting,” laughs Geza. The building has a small, yet beautiful garden, which can be seen through the larger-than-life window in the living room, which Margit feels is like an open cinema. “It shows the ever changing face of the city and not to forget that

the entire apartment is flooded with natural light because of glass windows,” shares Geza. Spread across 1,184 sqft, the home is in two levels. While the entertainment room, the bedroom and the kitchen is on the bottom level, the level above has a bedroom and a home-office for the couple. “We wanted to have minimal design, since the softer version is more appealing for us. What you see in our home is actually our spirit. Many people said and wrote to us that they can recognise our apartments. And that sounds so pleasing,” share the happy owners. The living room can be defined in two ways; the living wall that brings the outside inside and the window that shows the beautiful city. The couple kept the walls of their home white and splash of colours through furniture and furnishings have kept the space energetic and lively. The 80’s designed yellow armchairs are Italian while the carpet that attracts many eye balls and decorates the living room is actually a creation by Magrit. he house that Adetee Sawhaney designed is every bit authentic, unique and timeless. The pristine white marble flooring that starts right from the entrance and is spread throughout the penthouse gives it a feeling of spaciousness and a seemingless natural flow from one space to another. Another bewitching addition are the jaalis, which are made of stone and corian sandwiched with mirror not only acting as space dividers and visual treats, but also giving the house a regal feel. The double height entrance wall is the highlight of the

house. “Since the owners have their roots in Rajasthan, I wanted to give them something which would be close to their culture and heritage, yet distinctive enough to stand out,” says Adetee. The larger than life artwork is hand-painted with inspirations drawn from the Rajputana art and architecture. The famous step-well of Jaipur also known as Bawdi, which means a pond or a well has been depicted with motifs taken from the famous ‘Sheesh Mahal,’ the other elements include brass door knockers, which were used in the old forts and palaces. The background has a chevron pattern and a large lotus in full bloom. Another beautiful

handcrafted mirror jaali has been fixed in the centre with the entire background in gold leaf. To complete the look, a Venetian console with a rich malachite stone has been placed on it with inlay of Nandis on it. The artwork runs across the beam, which has been highlighted with beautiful bougainvilleas and a self pattern. Talking about the living area; it has been segregated into two parts. One part has Zanzibar veneer on the ceiling with a cozy fireplace with a sitout, and the other part has a higher ceiling with hand-painted gold leafs on the border. The dining cum informal lounge has been given a visual block with jaalis in white stone sandwiched with looking mirror flanked on both sides of the entrance. A beautiful geometrical pattern has been inlaid on the floor beneath the dining, therefore the entire dining table has been made in crystal cut glass. “This is the first time that we have experimented so daringly in making a massive table completely out of glass and mirror,” adds Adetee. The border of the ceilings in the living and dining area have been handpainted with neo classical ornate motif

giving them a distinct character. The bedrooms have been designed in a contemporary fashion. Smart leather panelling in a ‘maze’ pattern with brass and grey glass detailing has been done on the bedback wall which enhances the bed. The nightstands are further accentuated by using semi-precious smoky quartz stone. An olive green wallpaper adds colour and richness to the room. Small detailing on the furniture has been done, like pleating on the bed end chaise and the sofa to add glamour to the room. The sleek coffee table with details of brass, quartz and hi-gloss wood is hard to miss. The master bed wall is very evidently a ‘feature wall,’ which has a lot of details. Intricate brass jaalis in a ‘Bee hive’ pattern have been fixed from floor to ceiling on both sides of the bed. A concealed trap door has been cleverly incorporated in the back panel for occasional use. A larger than life brass moulding has been given behind the bed back with leather panelling, and a rich chenille fabric has been fixed in between the jaali and the frame in order to soften the

O

riginally built in the mid-60s, the building was handed over to Geetanjali Anand of Andy Homes with a brief that they wanted a Manhattan, New England look. “That’s how it all began. For us, it was the first complete turnkey architectural construction and interior project, which made it even more important for it to be outstanding in ways and this has been our dream project thus far,” shares Geetanjali. The designer started the project with a few precedent images for the owners to narrow down, to then design the facade of the house. Though the ground floor is owned by someone else, Geetanjali’s scope of work was the first floor and above. However, her clever ideation for the facade using top grade materials gave it a rich and elegant look. “The interior, no doubt, needed to flow with the grandeur of the exterior with every detail thought through, subtle yet rich, bold yet understated, balanced yet grand,” shares the designer. Talking about the challenges before taking us inside, the designer mentioned that the 50 years old building had changed a few hands, it has been adapted, refurbished, and has two owners currently. She had to work on the first floor with part of the second floor that was built before. The designer needed to add the second as well as part of the floor above. For her, the problematic area was the strength of the structure that she needed to work with. “To build the rest of the second floor and the part floor above, without reinforcing from the foundation or the ground floor, was thought possible to do, remained quite a challenge. We needed to add steel columns and beams and reinforce the building by reducing its existing weight. We achieved this by using ACC

blocks as opposed to conventional bricks for internal partitions, excavating all old flooring, removing the compacting beneath and re-filling it with lighter weight new age materials,” says Geetanjali. As you enter the house, the entrance lobby lends a luxurious charm with beige-light mustard Repleno marble flooring. What

is interesting is the slim lines to break the flooring style in Belgian black marble. The balustrade and handrail are designed in a way to match the black and brass along all floors. You will love the emerald green upholstered bench that sits beautifully against the brushed brass and deep beige wallpaper. The living space is divided into the family as well as the formal area. The family space is surely a treat to the eyes and mind. Rafters on the ceiling, striped wallpapers from Ralph Lauren, rich fabric, sheer roman blinds, mirror, wooden fans; each piece and material has been carefully chosen by Geetanjali to have a relaxed, yet sophisticated family area. “The focal point of the room is the mantlepiece dressed in tan coloured suede, beveled cleared mirror sections with moldings in black matt polish for definition. I have used three colours and materials to give a dramatic and theatrical feel,” says Geetanjali. The formal living space has been divided into three seating zones - a central, with an 8’ and 6’ sofa, a central large brass and glass coffee table and two one and a half seater chairs. The other end has another sofa, two end tables polished in black, a glass and perspex coffee table with comfortable chairs. The far end of the room has a stunning 8’ long and 42” high bar almost completely clad in tan suede, brass detailing and black polish on the edges. Now comes the dining area that apart from featuring outside beauty inside has a stunning 6’ tall sculpture. Made up of thousands of small clocks, it depicts a milkman holding a bright golden oddly shaped container, which once you know,

NETUK HOUSE Netuk House, Gangtok is more than just a palatial home stay. Perched on an elevated part of Tibet Road, Netuk House is an edifice of an architecturally chanting complex with a riveting account of history and tradition. Built in the late 1950’s, the house belonged to Gellong Netuk Lama, an executive counsellor to the then Chogyal (Monarch). Tibet Road, as the name suggests was the principal route for travellers and traders heading up to Tibet. Most of the commuters were silk traders involved in the historic Silk Route Trade. Netuk House began offering hospitality and provided a transit point for these travellers. That marked the beginning. Decades have gone by since Netuk House first opened it’s doors to the travellers, and although today it’s been upgraded to a luxurious home stay, tourists, visitors and vacationers can still enjoy and feel the warmth of the tradition and culture that remains unchanged.
