WHAT IS URBAN DESIGN ? ‘Urban’ the word seldom heard and used, involves multiple facilities laid down for the citizens like; electricity, water supply, waste disposal system, communication and commuting facilities, etc, headed by an administrative body. It is majorly for the people who come from different social, cultural, religious and economic backgrounds enjoying these facilities on a common ground. It could also be said that urbanization is „by the people‟ „of the people‟ and „for the people‟. ‘Urban Design’ is the tool for designing cities, towns and villages. Architecture wherein limits to the designing of individual buildings precisely fitted in specified site boundaries. Urban design deals with larger scale site areas that include group of buildings of various utilities, streets, open spaces, neighborhoods and districts, it could also extended for designing of an entire city. The ‘Design’ in urban design relatively stands for the functional and aesthetical aspect. It is to deal with making the cities more pronounced in terms of its utilitarian aspect for the users. It helps in preparing a background for facilitating the amenities and structuring of the cities. These urban areas need to be more sustainable in nature as the growing needs and relatively growing waste causes a severe damage to the environment. It provides controlled and better development prospects of a city or a settlement. Encourages growth in a planned direction and provides better living conditions for the citizens. Urban design is about making connections between people and place and movement between nature and build fabric. Urban design draws together the many strands of place- making, environmental stewardship, social equity and economic viability into creation of a place. Urban design is derived from transcends planning and transportation policy, architectural design, development economics, engineering and landscape. All these factors come together in forming a vision for tomorrow.

INTRODUCTION

Located in the middle on stretch of Delhi- Mumbai National Highway (NH8) Udaipur is connected to other centers to the state by three state highways SH-9 Udaipur is dependent on its lake system, which is directly, or indirectly the life source of the city in terms of surface water resources, tourism, and the ecosystem at large. Most of the tourists (domestic as well as foreign) come to the city primarily because of placid beauty of the lakes. The lakes attract increasing number of young adventurous tourists especially foreign tourists who provide foreign exchange thus strengthening the local economy.

STUDY AREA THE OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY AIMS AT STUDYING AND ANALYZING A SETTLEMENT THAT IS IN AN URGENT NEED OF URBAN ATTENTION. A SETTLEMENT WHICH HAS VARIOUS FLAVORS OF THE CITY ATTACHED TO IT; HISTORICAL, RELIGIOUS, PUBLIC GATHERING OR COMMERCIAL NATU RE. THE PRECINCT SO SELECTED HAPPENS TO BE IN THE EDGE OF THE CITY AND CARRIES ALONG THE ESSENCE OF UDAIPUR CITY AS A WHOLE. THE SITUATION IS CRAMPED IN NATURE AND ISSUES LIKE: SANITATION HYGIENE LIVING STANDARDS NEED TO BE DEALT WITH. THEREFORE FOR DEALING WITH AN URBAN SITUATION THE PRECINCT SO SELECTED MAY HELP AND GUIDE IN ALL DIRECTIONS WITH RESPECT TO URBAN DESIGN.

UPTO 1800 DEVELOPMENT REACH TO FORTWALL AND BEFORE INDIPENDENCE SOME BUILDINGS CONSTRUCTED OUT OF FORT WALL.

DEVELOPMENT INCREASES NEAR FORT WALL. MANY COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENCIAL CAME UP.

AFTER INDIPENDENCE THE ROAD EXPANDED BEYOND THE FORT. THE ROAD LEAD THE CHETAK CIRCLE AND BAZAR WAS DEVELOPED.

Typical door detail of a house accessed from the street. The wall painting around the door frame and on the sides are common feature till date with the traditional styles of painting thriving.

INFERENCES The bazaar street continues to fulfill its commercial function, the retail is art and craft based and caters to the national and international tourists. Handicraft shop incorporated in the ground floor of a residence on the main street street that has a functional and cultural role for both the segments. ·Many of the traditional houses in the old core of the city were demolished by their owners in the 1970's – 80's and replaced by new ones. This process still continues and the walled city is slowly losing its traditional character.

wires and cables for electrical supply, telephone wiring and television cables in the city area not only cause an aesthetic issue for the built heritage as they are loose and unorganized obscuring the building facades, but are possible sources of electric and fire hazard. Another threat is main transformers situated in dense areas without sufficient setback from the street – creating a fire and safety hazard.

PERSONAL UNDERSTANDINGS AND LEARNINGS THROUGH THIS PROJECTS AS A STUDENT OF ARCHITECTURE, WHENEVER I TRY TO APPROACH SOMETHING FROM A NEW DIRECTION, I ALWAYS GET TO LEARN OR GAIN SOME THING NEW AND CREATE SOME FRESH PROSPECTS. IT IS VERY NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND ARCHITECTURE ON A SOCIO-ECONOMIC ASPECT. MY 5TH YEAR URBAN DESIGN SUBJECT PROVIDED ME WITH THIS OPPORTUNITY. THE SUBJECT NOT ONLY PUT FORTH A CHALLENGE IN FRONT OF ME BUT ALSO HELPED TO CHANGE MY PERSPECTIVES IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS TO LOOK AT THE USERS AND THE ACTIVITIES. IT GAVE ME A FRAME WHERE THE SYMBIOSIS OF THE SOCIETY AT LARGE AND ARCHITECTURE IS MAGNANIMOUS. FOR ME URBAN DESIGN DOESN‟T JUST END AT THE ROAD-NETWORKS, OPEN-SPACES OR BUILDING TYPOLOGIES… IT GOES BACK TO THE FIRST LECTURE OF URBAN DESIGN AND THE QUESTION OF “WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY URBAN DESIGN?” DID WE REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT URBAN DESIGN IS AFTER A TWO HOURS LECTURE, WE WERE NOT SURE. BUT PRACTICAL LEARNING GIVES YOU THE BEST OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN AND EXPLORE. ONE SUCH WAS I EXPERIENCE IN UDAIPUR, EXPLORING, DOCUMENTING, ANALYZING AND COMING UP WITH AN URBAN DESIGN PROPOSAL FOR THE SELECTED PRECINCT. IN THE PROCESS, THE ESSENCE OF A SOCIETY WAS UNDERSTOOD. THE PEOPLE; THEIR RELIGION, CULTURE, TRADITION AND LIFESTYLE THAT CO NTRIBUTED IN SHAPING THE PHYSICAL ASPECT OF THE SOCIETY WERE UNDERSTOOD. THE STREETS, THE ARCHITECTURAL VOCABULARY, THE PEOPLE AND THE ACTIVITIES THAT GREW ALONG THE PRECINCT TALKED ABOUT THE RHYTHM IC CHANGES THE PRECINCT WENT THROUGH. ALL THESE ELEMENTS WHEN FELT IN PERSON AND WITNESSED IN PHYS ICAL DROVE ME THROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF THE TERM (NEAR OR FAR) „URBAN DESIGN‟.
