CEO’S MESSAGE

‘Today, HT is one of the best companies to work for’ Here’s our CEO, Rajiv veRma, on why HT is best poised to take on challenges

T

he roots of STAR Awards go back many many years ago. I would like to begin by thanking all those who have worked to make this event a success, as always. I go back 10 years, when I joined this company. It was very different compared to today. It was a small company faced with adversities, challenges, difficult times. We did not know how we will face the resource crunch, the emerging competition. That situation which we were facing was far worse than the crisis that the industry is going through, now. There were several people who came together and contributed in making it a successful company. One step at a time, bit by bit, we started to make progress and gained a lot of confidence with awards and recognition coming to us. We started to become a company that people started taking notice of. The brands that came up certainly started becoming a matter of envy for our competitors. They were getting globally recognized. We were becoming a company that was not only known in India but started being recognized overseas as well, in the form of Mint and Fever getting into the ‘companies to work for’ list. Slowly, as time passed, we became the best company to work for and that was only because of the work done by our employees. We are all going through extremely difficult times as a country, industry, economy, company, and individuals. Part of it is because of the external environment and pessimism around us. There are certain things you can foresee, actions you can control and plan for, but once in a lifetime, there come things which converge and create a situation completely unforecastable, and there is no force to cover that. Unfortunately for India and our industry, the situation that has emerged was just not foreseen. Part of this was the external environment that was emerging in the form of negativity, crime, murders, cynicism, fear in companies, pessimism. It was the situation that existed in 2008, when there was a similar financial crisis. Personally, I believe the answer lies in exactly the opposite of this negativity, because remember 10 years ago, when we were thinking we were going through an adverse situation for company goals, we eventually won the battle because we went

counter intuitive against brains, took chances and took steps which seemed non-sensible? Like going to Mumbai and launching a paper which was looking wrong, going into Hindi business, not going to television. We were making choices. Just like we went counter intuitive and ventured into unexplored areas successfully to combat challenges we were facing as a company earlier, I am sure we will come out of this situation too, by making the right choices. We have to display certain behaviours and take a set of actions which will make this company more robust, more profitable, and help us come out of this downturn. This sense of strong teamwork, commitment and physical and mental ability will help us stand this downturn. HT is one of the best poised companies to make it possible. I strongly believe the leadership team will demonstrate these behaviours and continue to live by our values of courage, empowerment, self-renewal and being responsible and peoplecentric. I want to thank the board members and promoters of the company for their continued support. HT, today, is one of the best companies to work for, and these challenges will only make us stronger. When we will look back, we will feel proud of the fact we were all there when it was happening. I am sure the galaxy of stars at HT will make it possible and I will be able to tell a great story.

INtervIeW LEADERSHIP TEAM

‘I strongly believe in a collaborative work culture’

PANKAJ SEITH, Vice President, Consumer Insights, talks about his work ethics and beliefs

You have been with us for how long? How has the experience been? My association with our company started in December 2007 and the six-year journey has been one filled with learning and excitement. Our company has achieved a lot in our various businesses and I am happy to have supported many of these along with my team. How different is working in a media house from an MNC? There are many pluses that work for us - quick decision making, tighter team work, faster people growth and transparency. However, there are some aspects of an MNC's working that they are strong as well, like, learnings from other markets, and process orientation.

I believe in two things strongly delivering value to the company and employee engagementcum-growth 00

What's your leadership style? Fundamentally I believe in two things strongly delivering value to the company and employee engagement-cum-growth. My leadership style flows from these two beliefs and I work very closely with my team, my internal customers/partners and our external partners to achieve this. Is every day a Monday? Every day is indeed a Monday in terms of the energy it requires to do the things one wants to do, and being fit and calm helps greatly. And equally importantly, every week is unique because of the dynamic environment we

live in. One has to play the week like an ODI over - have a plan in mind but play the ball on it's merit. One person you admire the most in HT? There a whole set of colleagues whom I admire for their skills, dedication and people orientation. How old were you when you started your career? My career started at age 24 and I have had the fortune of working in various parts of our country across the 3 companies I have served in. Have you found your true calling in your current job? Quite true - I enjoy adding value to the businesses via research driven insights that help our businesses and brands grow. And the organization is also happy with the value added by my team and me, over the years.

What do you think needs to be changed about the organisation? We have many strengths as an organization our result orientation, ability to reinvent ourselves and people orientation. Adding a strong Innovation Process Management to these skills would make us even stronger. What are your hobbies? I enjoy seeing movies and following major sporting events. Tell us about your family? My immediate family consists of my wife Gayatri and son Prajwal. My wife is a former teacher who is a great support to me and our son, who is in Class XI. He is an IT enthusiast and aspires to do engineering in a good college. How many holidays do you take in a year? Last few years have been a bit hectic so I end up taking a short annual vacation of about 6-7 days in a year and another short break of 2-3 days. But we try and eat out each week to rejuvenate ourselves.

Rapid FiRe

Destiny or hard work? Both How many cars do you own? Two - including a 2001 model! Your favourite gadget? iPhone 5 Your latest buy? A watch - nice and affordable. What do you like to read? Business magazines/ sites and sports sites. Are you religious? Yes. I am a strong believer in righteous action, not in superstitions. Favourite dessert? I have a sweet tooth. I like rabri, rasmalai and jalebi in small portions.

Go Mobile, Get Social! Digital Quotient will help drive HT Media’s expansion in the digital world

A

cross the world today, the most powerful factors when it comes to digital media are the explosive growth of mobile usage and of social media. It is estimated that by 2014, the number of mobile phones will overtake the entire population of the world — while Facebook, the largest social media platform, has already crossed a billion users worldwide. These forces present a whole new world of marketing opportunities for brands and businesses. The newest, most exciting digital venture by HT this year is the creation of Digital Quotient – a Digital

Solutions Organisation that helps brands and businesses leverage the power of Digital, with a special focus on the two areas of mobile and social media. Digital Quotient was formed in June 2013, by the coming together of two premier entities: HT Mobile — operating successfully since 2009 in the mobile and digital entertainment space, and Webitude, a Gurgaon-based social media startup, which has over the last few years, brought

innovative solutions to market with clients like Cleartrip, Slice, Intuit and more. Earlier this year, HT Mobile brought Webitude under its wings the two now operate together under the DQ umbrella, with the mantra — ‘Go Mobile, Get Social.’ Vinish Kathuria, COO, Digital Quotient says, “There are really 3 megatrends changing the face of Indian digital marketing today. Firstly, the explosive growth in mobile usage, with the total user base estimated to be over 700 million today. In fact, we’ve recently overtaken Japan to become the 3rd largest smartphone market in the world. Secondly, the booming growth in social media, led by Facebook, which today has more than 82 million users in India. Finally, the ever increasing appetite for video as a medium, with YouTube claiming more than 50 million active users in India.” Given that India is an undoubtedly young country, the penetration of these digital media is expected only to

grow faster in the coming years. There’s a young workforce that is always switched on – so it’s no wonder that Indian marketers are now jumping on the digital bandwagon. Hindustan Unilever Ltd made an announcement earlier this year about tripling its online ad spends. For a recent campaign, Bisleri declared that more than 30% of its budget was being allocated to digital spends. Further, the recent TRAI regulations that limit the cap on television advertising per hour, are driving marketers to look far more seriously at digital investments than ever before. Even

driving the upgradation of phones is the desire to be on social media. And videos, which are among the most consumed and shared content online on mobile and social media platforms. It’s a powerful upward spiral.” he adds. A recent initiative by DQ has been to increase the understanding of the digital spaces, by launching the ‘DQ University.’ The first recipients of training under DQ University have been the HT Media sales teams. 12 sessions have been conducted so far at various locations (Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Jaipur, Agra, Bangalore etc) covering 150+ people.

Know The number of mobile phones sold annually in our country is 10 times the number of the babies born. No wonder India is now the third largest smartphone market globally! campaigns by political parties are now being led through the online medium, particularly social media platforms like Twitter and through mobile marketing campaigns such as IVR-recorded messages to the public. “The mobile-social-video phenomena are interlinked”, says Vinish. “Mobile penetration is driving the growth of social media like never before, by bringing internet connectivity to people who never had it earlier. Simultaneously, what is

These have served as a means for HT employees to familiarise themselves with elements of the digital marketing world, as well as to understand the specific offerings of DQ. Over time, these trainings will expand to sessions for other stakeholders, and external clients. It was during one such DQ University training session that one participant commented — “This intervention is a timely one – because our clients have now started saying ‘all that you’re offering me

fireFLY it’s early days yet for DQ, but the last few months have been tremendously encouraging. Some of the campaigns that the team members are particularly proud of include — Virality of HT No TV Day campaign in Mumbai DQ used its knowledge of the social and mobile ecosystem to get the No TV Day hashtag to trend at #1 in Twitter in India for 3 days & # 1 worldwide for a few hours. in terms of reach is great – now, what do you offer in terms of Digital?’. This is the context in which DQ operates. There is a great demand by marketers for holistic solutions that have digital media integrated within them, and this is precisely why DQ is making a tremendous effort to align closely with other parts of HT. Hindustan has already used AR in an impactful manner, to give its readers an audiovisual experience on the occasions of New Year and Holi. Vinish adds, “If the AR experience can delight readers in the Hindi heartland where penetration and connectivity issues still exist, imagine the power of what it can do for metro consumers.” “Mobile marketing still has huge

potential to grow because many marketers are still are not aware of the intrinsic power of the mobile medium,” says Sukhdeep Bhogal, Sales-Head, DQ. “But we’re seeing a huge shift in interest by marketers towards the medium this year, and combined with our strengthened capabilities in social media, it’s likely to mean good things for our businesses in the coming months,” he adds. “We’re a country that loves to share. The art of using social media for conversation with consumers goes well beyond ‘Let’s start a Facebook page and get likes’. It’s about content planning, community management, analytics, online reputation management, and so much more. This

is an exceedingly important space for brands to begin to carve out their strategies,” says Girish Mahajan, cofounder of Webitude and head of planning for DQ. “And social media means business, too, given its link with e-commerce. After all, a huge percentage of online shoppers recommend their purchase to others. Word of mouth has always mattered, and social media makes it matter more than ever before!”, he adds. The Digital Quotient team has its main offices in two locations in Gurgaon, and also has national presence through its direct sales force and partner network in Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata. DQ also coordinates closely with the Brand Solutions and other teams across HT to develop integrated solutions. A lesser known aspect of DQ is the Digital Entertainment division, and the strength it possesses as a leading provider of content to operators, enterprises, handset/SIM vendors and digital players. In fact, whether it is Youtube as a channel, or operator downloads, the Digital Entertainment division is one of the top players in the country, and has over 132 global partnerships, notable strength in regional content and plans to get into mainstream Bollywood over the next few months. Apart from this, the

It is estimated that by 2014, the number of mobile phones will overtake the entire population of the world division is looking to scale some direct-to-consumer platforms as well. “There’s a lot of excitement about the immense possibilities. DQ’s focus going ahead would be on providing top tier solutions to our customers and partners where we combine the customer service attitude of a digital agency with an innovation mindset of a product organisation. Add the capabilities of HT Media’s sales outreach and we have an unparalleled recipe for success,” says Vinish. Scan QR Code to visit DQ website

y name is Saurabh Gupta and I joined HT in January this year and I am very happy to be a part of this family. I did a course in Chemical Engineering from IIT BHU and studied management at IIM Lucknow. I joined Asian Paints and spent 12 years in finance and then moved to sales for a stint in a factory located in Greater Noida. It is one of the few organisations that has been growing strength to strength every year, not only in scale but also from a managerial point of view. I later started my own company and was doing fine till 9/11 happened. I then realised that not only getting business but also getting funding will become difficult, so I moved to PepsiCo where

Do you plan to expand only in Delhi or in other cities too? Right now, we have 6 centres in Delhi NCR and are adding 6 more in the coming year; We will hopefully move from 12 to 24 centres in the year 2014-15 and then we will look at one more city other than Delhi NCR. That will be in the northern India only. Delhi has a scope to expand to 40-50 centres, so the potential is vast.

I spent 6 years in UP and managed operations in states like Hyderabad, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. I also worked in South East Asian markets based out of Bangkok for a year, in sales. In all, it was a great experience because of the diversity of experience. I came back and spent 4 years with telecom. My last assignment was with VLCC as CEO - Health & Wellness. I have several friends in HT and when I met them, they told me good things about HT and its leadership. It’s been an awesome eight monthlong journey. HT has got great quality and committed employees and is culturally a vibrant organisation.

Are you working on the franchise model? Right now we have not given any thought to it because we are expanding largely in Delhi where we don’t want to franchise. But when we move out of Delhi, franchise is something that needs to be evaluated and done, otherwise we may get limited at some point in time. Franchising would also be

I think HT is among the best organisations that I’ve worked in; it allows you to do what you want. Here you learn, try and make a difference, make an impact, fail in some cases, correct them, but the whole idea is: Are we building an institution? The answer is, yes. The journey so far has been very good. It is a dream organisation. The areas where HT has invested in have done really well, be it HT Hindi, Mint, HT Mumbai or Fever. Study Mate, specifically, is a group initiative of HT into supplementary education. The need for the same arises due to the lack of quality teaching in schools, combined with the fulfilling the ambition of the students who want more.

possible and easy when we have perfected and scaled the model to an extent, so while we have not thought of franchising now, it will definitely be an option when we grow bigger. Are you planning to go for higher education in other cities? In the field of education, there are two areas that HT is looking at. We focus on students from 9th to 12th through Study Mate. There is a joint venture between HINDUSTAN TIMES and Apollo Group

HT has got great quality and committed employees and is culturally a vibrant organisation

I think practically 9 out of 10 kids go to a tuition centre or opt for home tuitions which are not standardised and that’s the opportunity. Education needs to be implemented and managed. Parents, who pay for the education of their children, are equally concerned about their welfare and they very rarely know how high is high and how low is low for a child. So we decided to come up with a programme called CONNECT, where teachers and parents connect with each other and the parents get updated about their child. We have 6 centres in Delhi and will be expanding to 12 centres. By 2015, there would be a total of 24 centres. We are looking forward to exciting times ahead.

where higher education as portfolio is being built up and you will soon see a lot of action in that area in the coming few months. Will you focus on expanding programmes like SAT for the students? The answer is yes and no, both. Yes, because anything that falls under 11th and 12th is under our domain, and no, as right now we want to perfect our current product. We want to move one step at a time.

Will we start up with courses like BBA entrance test after 12th? Again, the answer is yes and no both. Yes, because anything that is of interest to the 9th to 12th should be within our consideration set. In this regard, BBA is slightly different because currently, it is a three month coaching period during holidays; it utilises classes during the day time and fits easily into our empty classrooms. Thus, we will certainly evaluate it, but not for the next few years.

program was to create innovative ways to engage with campuses and build visibility for HT to gain brand attention and a stronger brand recall. The first step in this direction was a Guest Lecture — a great way to connect with students from the organisation’s standpoint. We visited IIM Lucknow, IIFT & IIM Raipur, where senior leaders participated in the lectures. Sukumar, Editor, Mint, spoke on ‘Innovation in News Media’ and Shantanu Bhanja, Head, Marketing, shared insights on the Print Media at IIM Lucknow. Pankaj Seith visited IIFT, where he delved into the ‘Marketing Research’ subject and took students through the

We are proud to announce that this year Hindustan times has received two awards:

• Hindustan Times' Delhi Metro team won the Prakash Kardaley Memorial Award for Civic Journalism instituted by the Ramnath Goenka Memorial Foundation. The team got the award for its coverage of the Commonwealth Games in 2010. In exclusive reports and special full-page series, HT focused not just on preparation delays but also how lack of planning and the pressure to meet deadlines left a big question mark on what would otherwise be the Games' lasting infrastructural legacy. • Shalini Singh, Principal Correspondent, Hindustan Times, won the Ramnath Goenka award for excellence in journalism 2010 for environmental reporting for her in-depth report on mining in Goa that highlighted the issue of illegal mining in the state. The story, possibly the first in mainstream media, involved reporting from the ground to interviews with then environment and mines ministers - Jairam Ramesh and BK Handique. This story, among others, related to environment issues in Goa were researched by Shalini as a fellow of Centre for Science Environment between February and April 2010. The work also won the first Cushrow Irani Prize for Environmental Reporting given by The Statesman in 2011 and the Prem Bhatia award for excellence in environment reporting in 2012. Both awards were conferred in a special ceremony on July 23 2013 by the CJI P Sathasivam.

Yogic ways to a better life

S

tress and strain of odd working hours along with a sedentary lifestyle takes a toll on one's health. Coping with lifestyle diseases is snuffing out lives and taking away productive years. Meditation reduces stress, re-shapes the brain, increases concentration, thus increasing productivity. As part of the Safety Week, a yoga session was organised on March 7th, 2013 at the Greater Noida plant. A yoga teacher from YMCA club, Greater Noida, delivered valuable tips on yoga. The session was also attended by Gururaj Shastry -Plant Head. The yoga session helped the employees maintain a relaxed, focused, and energetic mind in the midst of their hectic schedule.

Volleyball match @ Greater Noida A We believe in a greener HT! E veryone knows that trees and other plants are valuable. They beautify our surroundings, purify our air, act as sound barriers, and help us save energy through their cooling shade in summer and their

wind reduction in winter. The benefits of trees can be grouped into social, environmental, and economic categories. Hence, a tree plantation programme was organised on March 8th, 2013 at Greater Noida.

ire accidents, which are common in India, cause loss of life and property. In order to prevent fire accidents, emergency planning and fire safety training is essential. Most employees only think of fire drills as annoying interruptions that take time away from the work they have lined up that day. But in the event of a real emergency, proper preparation can make a lot of difference, and not lead to a tragedy. To create awareness among employees about fire safety at home and workplace, a Safety Week was celebrated at the Greater Noida plant from March 4 to March 11. Employees celebrated the week with a safety slogan contest, poster making competition and safety quiz. People from all departments participated in large numbers with great zeal. This is connected with the slogan “Safety is as simple as ABC — Always Be Careful”. The staff and workers also took a safety pledge to do everything possible for prevention of

accidents, as well as protection of the environment in the interest of society and the nation at large. On March 4, a mock fire drill was conducted. During the drill, the staff was trained in tackling emergency situations without creating panic. Firemen explained various types of extinguishers and where to use them. They also gave a demonstration on how to use an extinguisher in case of fire. The session concluded with a question - answer round. Anjan M a z u m d a r, Quality Head, VS Raja, Project Head, Gururaj Shastry, Plant Head and Sudeep Banerjee, Senior Manager, HR, attended the event, which concluded with a speech by Gururaj Shastry. He summarised the safety norms and gave valuable insight into industrial safety measures, especially fire safety. Compiled by Sudeep Banerjee, Senior Manager, HR, Greater Noida

Eighth anniversary celebration of the Mumbai edition

T

he eighth anniversary celebrations of the Mumbai edition was the first celebration in the new office premises that we had moved into — the India Bulls Finance Centre. We had moved there two months before the anniversary. Employees who have been with the edition since the launch on July 14, 2005, were special participants in the celebrations. They expressed their reasons for staying on and why they love HT in a ten minute film that was played before the official celebrations got underway. All of them were happy to be part of the Hindustan Times success story in Mumbai. In an office festooned with streamers and the by now familiar red, blue and white balloons, the highlight was the huge cake in the shape of the figure 8. It was cut by two employees who have worked with

Hindustan Times Mumbai for the longest — even before the launch of the edition in the city.
