The 6th Convocation was held on 3rd October 2015. Padma Shri. Dr. A. S. Kiran Kumar, Secretary, Department of Space; Chairman, Space Commission; and Chairman, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was the Chief Guest and Mr. Isa Abdullatif Alansari, Chief Operations Officer, Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C and Mr. Berndt A. Buchmann, Director of Group After Sales and Vehicle Logistics, Volkswagen Group Sales India were the Guests of Honour. The dignitaries present were Dr. (Mrs.) Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor; Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Pro Chancellor; Dr. Aby Sam and Mr. Ashok Verghese, Directors; and Rev. Dr. Xavier Alphonse S. J, Founder Director, Indian Centre. Dr. S. Ramacharan Vice-Chancellor,

who presented the Annual report proudly announced that the University was provisionally accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for the B.Tech Aeronautical Engineering programme. Dr. A.S. Kiran Kumar spoke about the advances in space and technology; followed by houring 58 gold medalists and bestowed degrees to 1251 students of UG, PG, M.Phil & Ph. D. Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, stressed the vitality of entrepreneurship and contribution for the economic growth of the nation. Dr. S. Ramachandran conferred Honorary Degrees to Dr. A. S. Kiran Kumar, Mr. Isa Abdullatif Alansari, and Mr. Berndt A. Buchmann.

ACM ICPC ASIA CHENNAI REGIONAL CONTEST

DST Sponsored a ten day Training Programme on “Big Data Analytics” hosted by Hindustan University in association with Big Data Initiative Division, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India from 14th to 24th March 2016. Dean-SCS, HOD-SCS, faculty members of Information Technology, Computer Science and MCA departments organized the event. The efforts of Dr. K. Ramesh Kumar, Associate Professor (IT), to get sponsorship from Big Data Initiative Division was laudable.

INTRA COLLEGIATE QUIZ ACM ICPC Asia Chennai Regional Contest was conducted on 23rd January 2016. The Contest Chair was Dr. Venkat Subramaniam, Dean C S; Contest Site Director, Dr. Rajeswari Mukesh, HOD, CSE; Contest Associate Site Director, Mr. John Deva Prasanna; and Contest coordinator, Mr. D. Praveen Kumar. 115 teams from 78 colleges participated in the ACM ICPC contest. Dr.Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, welcomed the

contestants with a special address. Dr. Madhavan Mukund, Dean, Chennai Mathematical Institute & ACM India, Vice Chairman, was the Chief Guest of Honour. As Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay bagged 1st prize, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee and Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad won 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively.

In memory of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, an Intra Collegiate Quiz was conducted on 27th July 2016.

In commemoration of the birth anniversary of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Hindustan Technology Business Incubator (HTBI) & Hindustan Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre (HEIC) of Hindustan University conducted “The Hindustan Innovation Challenge-‘Innovate2Win’” on 15th October 2015. The aim was to inspire the students to excel in creativity and develop team spirit. The teams comprising students of various engineering disciplines exhibited their innovative projects. There were eight rounds of screening before the grand finale.

HR Forum event in collaboration with Times of India was held on 8th January 2016. Mr. D. Peter Immanuel, CEO, Aviation & Aerospace Sector Skill Council, NSDC, was the Chief Guest. A book titled ‘An Expert Guide to Your Right First Job’ authored by Mr. T. Muralidharan was released during the event. The forum had many Panel discussions and Workshops.

FOUNDER’S DAY

Founder’s Day celebrations was conducted on 20th June 2016, to commemorate the 76th birthday of our beloved Founder, Late Dr. K. C. G. Verghese. The function was presided over by Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, Chairperson, Hindustan Group of Institutions. Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, shared few instances from the life of Dr. K. C. G. Verghese; and quoted his saying “If you have a dream in your mind, destiny is in your hand.” Further, she reminded the younger generation to chase their dreams so that they can succeed in life. Rev. Dr. John M. Prasad, Director of Peace Studies, Institute of Advanced Chrristian Studies, MCC, Chennai remembered Dr. K. C. G. Verghese as a great visionary and stated that it was his perseverance: a quality to be imbibed by all, that made all his dreams come true.

CHETAK HELICOPTER AT HITS

University Day Celebration was held on 3rd May 2016. Mr. M.G. Poduval, Managing Director, MGP Associates, Chennai was the Chief Guest. Rank holders and Staff achievers were given awards in appreciation of their performance.

ANTI-RAGGING CAMPAIGN 2016 Chief Guest, Mr. Abash Kumar IPS, Addl. DGP, Tamil Nadu Police Academy, Vandalur, stressed on the need of self-discipline among adult students by becoming role models for the future generation on 2nd August 2016. The School of Aeronautical Sciences inducted Chetak Multipurpose Helicopter. The Chetak features a single lifting rotor and anti-torque tail rotor powered by a turbine engine. It can carry seven passengers including the pilots. It weighs 2200 kg and can cruise at 100 knots covering a range of 270 nautical miles and has an endurance of 3.40 hours.

NEW CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE CENTRE FOR AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS Chief Guest, Dr. Kiran Kumar, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organization inaugurated the Centre for Autonomous Systems on 3rd October 2015. The Center for Continuing Education was inaugurated on 12th February 2016 by the Chief Guest, Mr. K. Suresh, President & CEO, India Cements Capital Ltd. Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director – HITS graced the occasion. Mr. Milton Huggins, heads the Center for Continuing Education. The Center for

Continuing Education brochure was released during the programme. An MOU between Hindustan Institute of Technology and M/s Enhelion was also signed aiming at facilitating online training and certification courses related to management & law.

RANKINGS

Ranked in THE WEEK–HANSA Research Best Colleges Survey 2016 on June 2016 issue. The ranking was done under the Category Top Private Engineering Colleges as 33rd & 24th among Top Private Engineering Colleges South Zone.

Times of India 2016, published the rankings on 30th June 2016. The study had three major modules: Desk Research, Factual Survey and Perceptual Rating Survey; and HITS was Ranked 7th in Chennai.

Ranked 6th in the list of ‘TOP 10 Indian Applicants for Patents from Institutes and Universities’ as released by the Indian Patent Office.

INDO GLOBAL ARCHITECTURE EDUCATION EXCELLENCE AWARD 2015

School of Architecture, Hindustan University received Indo Global Architecture, Education Excellence Award 2015 during the International Research Conference conducted by the Indo Global Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (IGCCIA) in December 2015 at Pune. Dr. Sheeba Chander, HoD, School of Architecture, received the award from an eminent Architect Ar. Shaikh Zuber Rashid. She also received a citation and Lifetime membership on the occasion.

NATIONAL DEBATE WINNER

Mr. Makesh, CSE 2nd Year won the debate at the Student Speaker Leaders of the 6th Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad 2016, held at Pune. He represented Tamil Nadu under the debating topic: “Will income and crop security seal the fate of farmers? His team members were Vikas Raje (Maharashtra), Priyanshu Shukla (Madhya Pradesh) and Sumedh R. Kadam (Maharashtra).

YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD

Dr. V. Preethi, Associate Professor, Dept. of Civil participated in the 4th National Convention on Hydrogen Energy and Advanced Materials held at NIT-Bhopal in association with University of Kerala and IAHEAM and won the prestigious National Young Scientist award.

CADETS EXCEL IN AIVSC 2015

The Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman Nicobar Directorate adjudged the Second Best Air NCC Directorate in India out of the 17 NCC Directorate. This has been attributed to the excellent performance by Hindustan NCC team under the able leadership of Contingent Commander Flying Officer Giri Rangarajan. The team won 4 trophies and 29 individual medals in AIVSC 2015. Cadet Rama Dugu Anil was adjudged the Best cadet pilot.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and an agreement for Aero Students Exchange Programme was signed at Institut Polytechnique des Sciences Avancées (IPSA), Seine, France by Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Pro Chancellor – Hindustan University and Dr. Hervé RENAUDEAU, General Director - Institut Polytechnique des Sciences Avancées.

MoU was signed by Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director, Hindustan University and Dr. Jo-Carol Fabianke, Vice-Chancellor for Academic Success, Alamo Community College District, at San Antonia, Texas, USA. San Antonio and Chennai have sister-city relationship. Under sister-city agreements, municipalities agree to promote economic, cultural and educational exchanges.

GULF DELEGATES VISIT The delegates from University of East London, U.K. visited our campus on 14th September 2015. Prof Michael Seed, Professor of Pharmacology, School of Health, Sport and Bioscience; Professor Neville Punchard, Dean of Health, Sport and Bioscience; and Ms. Mirrin Raikhan, Project Manager Education U.K., South India were the guests. Seminar on “Cheminformatics and Drug Designing” and presentation on “Higher education opportunities at University of East London” were delivered by Prof Michael Seed and Professor Neville Punchard successively.

EIBIS PROGRAMME

Orientation programme for students from Dongukk University, South Korea enrolled in English, Indian History & Culture, Business Studies for International Students (EIBIS) 2016 batch was held on 19th February 2016 at International Office.

INTERNATIONAL AERIAL ROBOTIC COMPETITION 2015, CHINA

Team Recon, comprising eight students of Aerospace Engineering and Avionics competed in the International Aerial Robotics Competition in China on 2nd November 2015. Dr. Dalbir Singh, Associate Professor, School of Aeronautical Sciences, Hindustan University was the Faculty Advisor. The participants were Kunal Naik, Vishwajeet, Singh Saini, Rohan S. K., Prashant Prabhakar, Path Mirani, Nirav Patel (4th Year Aerospace Engineering), Midhun M. and V. Aasish (M. Tech. Avionics). The final flight of the drone designed by Team Recon on 7th November 2015 resulted in “The Best Sheepherder Award.”

ORIENTATION PROGRAM IRANIAN STUDENTS

In his address, he emphasized on the commitment of people in various sectors to the success of Digital India; and illustrated about the 9 pillars of Digital India. Dr. K. M. FLOOD RELIEF CAMP IN DECEMBER RAIN

The 67th Republic Day celebrations was held on 26th January 2016 at Open Air Theatre. The event began with a parade by the NCC, followed by hoisting of the flag and cultural programmes.

BLOOD DONATION CAMP

The Madras Blood Bureau organized the Blood donation camp on 9th October 2015. Dr. Ramachandran, Vice Chancellor inaugurated the camp. The Blood banks from Govt. Hospitals ( Mobile Blood Unit), Cancer Hospitals, Hindu Mission and Royapettah Govt. Hospitals were the sponsors and 368 units of blood were collected from the camp. A team from Hindustan University set out on a war footing to rescue the families affected by the horrendous rain in the inundated localities at OMR, Kelambakkam, Padur, Chemmenchery, Tiruporur and adjoining 40 villages. Hindustan University Rescue Team comprising NSS, NCC, Sports students and staff actively involved in relief activities. Medical camp was also conducted after the floods in the adjoining villages.
