ABOUT TED

FORMULA SAE, ITALY

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas worth spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Long Beach, California, along with the TED Active in Palm Springs; the annual TED Global conference is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Independently organized TEDx event was organised in the University on 16th February 2013.16 Eminent personalities shared their experience, ideas and success stories in their chosen fields at the event. In short, it was a bench marking event with perfect blend of ideas and innovation from the experts.

Mr. R. V. Nagarajan Asst. Prof. School of Architecture received the Best Paper Award, for his paper “A Critique on the Evolution of Landscape Architecture & Creation of Landscape Evolution Model”, which was presented at the International Conference on Civil and Architectural applications in Thailand on 18 &19 December 2012.

Spirit Global Design Challenge (SGDC) 2012

Hindustan University is one amongst the 3 teams which represented INDIA at the Formula SAE Italy competition in September 2012. The team had worked on the car for more than a year to build the FSAE car that was competitive in the static as well as the dynamic events. The extensive partnership with MRF Tyres, Motul Lubricants, Ricardo Software, NSK Bearings, our university Research Department and many companies assisted the team for the successful development of the car.

BAJA - USA 23 passionate engineering graduates from the University formed a team which qualified and represented India in an extremely demanding and challenging student project “SAE Baja”, USA. The event was organized by the Largest Automotive Community - SAE. The SAE is an ultimate Off-Road racing pinnacle for Engineers.

Awards Gallery NASA Green Aviation

Aero Design Competition 2013 - USA

Mr. Bhargav Narayanan, Mr. Bhupien Malhothra, Mr. Aravind Sasikumar, and Mr. Nikhil John (4th year) from the School of Aeronautical Sciences won the Second place in the Spirit Global Design Challenge (SGDC) 2012 an international competition for designing aircrafts for carrying a capacity of 165 passengers conducted by Spirit Aerosystems Inc USA.

AURO MITHRA Nikhil John, Aravind Sasikumar and Manish Kumar, (4th year) students from the School of Aeronautical Sciences Hindustan University won the first place in the Non-US category at NASA Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) Project in which around 250 teams participated. They designed an aircraft named “Aura Mithra”, with the vision of developing the next generation air transportation system, which potentially achieves more efficiency, less noise and emissions.

A 9 member team “SUAVE” from the School of Aeronautical Sciences, Hindustan University, participated in the 2013 AERO DESIGN WEST competition held at Los Angeles, USA. This prestigious International competition was conducted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International) from 12 to 14 April 2013. Hindustan University was ranked 9th place in the Design and Analysis Concept of the 29 teams in the Micro class category.

Students visited leading automobile industries in Germany.

Prof. S. Murugesan from the School of Aeronautical Sciences published an article titled “Hybrid Rocket Testing” in the Aerospace America Magazine 2012, which is one of the reputed American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) publications. Dr. Badri Narayanan, Associate Professor, Mr. Harihara Sudan, Assistant Professor and Mr. Saravanan, Assistant Professor from the School of Management emerged as the Runners–Up in the 16th MMA competition for Tomorrow’s Managers on the theme “Future Tense or Future Perfect” held on 13th January 2013.

EDI-NEN Innovative Idea Contest

The Centre also received an Award for “H & R Johnson Artists in Concrete Awards Asia – 2012”. The award was received in Pune on 18th March 2013.

Our University won the prestigious Good Green Governance Award in Education Institutional Category. The award was given by Dr. Sudhir Vasudeva, Chairman & Managing Director, ONGC on 22nd April 2013. The award was instituted by Srishti Publications, New Delhi.

Mr. Britto Paul Louis and Mr. C. Mukund (3rd year) from Automobile Engineering attended a training program in July 2012 conducted by the Steinbeis Transfer Centre for Automotive Engineering, Esslingen University, Stuttgart, Germany. This course was based on selected topics in Automotive Engineering.

Green GovernanCe Award 2012

The Dr. K. C. G. Resource and Research Centre, at the University received an Award for “Excellence in Built Environment 2011-2012” presented by the Indian Buildings Congress. The commendation certificate was presented by the Honourable Union Minister of State for Urban Development Smt. Deepa Dasmunsi (GOI) to our architects in a grand ceremony conducted in January 2013 at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

Mr. Ajith Kumar and Mr. Sundeep Chowdary (3rd Year) from the School of Building Sciences won the second prize in the “Innovative Idea Contest” organised by the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India and National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN) at EDI, Ahmedabad. EDI-NEN is a place where students will share ideas of new products, services and technologies that can become the foundation for new businesses. Centre for Innovation & Entrepreneurship of Hindustan University celebrated the E-Week (Entrepreneurship Week) from 11th to 13th February 2013.

Elihu Yale inter-collegiate Debates 2012 Ms. Anupama Nair and Ms. Shaleena Elza (1st year) from the School of Computing Sciences secured the first place in the “Elihu Yale inter-collegiate Debates 2012” organised by the Indo-American Association at Women’s Christian College on 29th November 2012. US Consul General Jennifer McIntyre, presented the trophy.

QUIZ on Science of Engineering Materials Mr. Aswin Krishnan, Mr. Gulakala Rutwik and Mr. Hari Vishaal (3rd year) from the School of Mechanical Sciences received the first prize in the Quiz programme on “Science of Engineering Materials” on the occasion of the National Science Day organised by the Institutions of Engineers, Chennai on 2nd February 2013.

Dr. S. Ramachandran Advisor

Dr. S.Ramachandran has more than 30 years of experience in research and administration of higher education. He received doctorates from Annamalai University in Marine Sciences and University of Miami in Oceanography. He earned his D.Sc., from University of Madras. He has more than 250 research publications in national and international journals. He has authored 12 books and guided 30 Ph.D. scholars. He has successfully completed 52 research projects worth Rs.200 million in the area of Maritime Studies. He has received 27 international awards and fellowships and served as expert member in more than 47 national and international apex level committees.

Deputy Director - MBA Dr. David T. Easow is a multifaceted Business and Academic Management Professional, with over 26 years of experience in India and Abroad. He has held Senior Management Positions in MNCs, IT, Knowledge Management & Infrastructure Industry, NGO and B-Schools. Dr. David is the recipient of Maulana Azad Puraskar, Gem of India and International Gold Star Award for uplifting Business Management Education by researching, developing and making operational “World’s First Post Graduate Program in Business Analytics”.

He worked 35 years in the Indian Army and retired as Brigadier. He has vast experience functioning in the areas such as recruitment, media management, academic institution, organizing conferences for the government and army dignitaries. He has a doctorate, M. Phil and M.Sc. in Defence and Strategic studies from University of Madras.

Mr. S. PIRAMA Nayagam Senior HR Manager He completed his Post Graduate certificate in HRM from XLRI, Jamshedpur, MBA from IGNOU and M.A Public Administration from Annamalai University. He has worked as Vice-President, HRM and Admin at Impetus Consulting and was a Non Commissioned Officer in Aero Engines Overhaul Depot, Kanpur. He is a visiting faculty at various institutions and is a member of AIMA, MMA and NHRD.

Dr. Rajagopalan Devanathan

Dr. V. Paramasivam received his Ph D in Structural Engineering from IIT, Madras, in 1973. He obtained his M.Tech in Structural Engineering from IIT Bombay. He worked as a professor in IIT Madras for the past 32 years. He joined Hindustan University as a Professor in Mechanical Department in 1998. For the past 15 years, he served as Head of the Department, Principal, Dean (PG Studies) and Dean (Research) in the University.

Dr. R Devanathan received his Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, in 1972. He obtained his M Sc (Eng) in Electrical Engineering from the same university in 1969. He worked in Electronics Commission, Govt. of India in the area of Information, Planning and Analysis during 1973-1978. From 1983 to 2004, he was the faculty of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Dr. Devanathan is currently the Dean of the School of Electrical Sciences.

Dr. Aby Sam, Director Hindustan University signed an MoU with University of Technology on 21st October 2012, Berlin, Germany for joint research, workshops, staff & students exchange in the field of Architecture and related subjects.

Dr. L.N. Ramamurthy He graduated in Civil Engineering from Annamalai University in 1951. He received his MS from Cornell University USA. He received his Ph.D in 1966 from IIT Kharagpur. He served as a Professor and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Madras till 1990. After his retirement he joined as the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Hindustan University. He headed the Department till 2001. He was the member of the committee involved in the revision of the Indian standard Code of Practice for general Construction in Steel IS: 800-1984 by the Bureau of Indian Standards. He received “Sir Arthur Cotton” gold medal in 1981 for a paper published in a renowned journal. Now he is a visiting faculty in the University. He established the Structural Engineering lab through the MODROBS scheme. Currently he is involved in the ongoing BRNS project which is being funded by the “Department of Atomic Energy”, Mumbai.

On 21 February 2013, the School of Applied Sciences hosted Harmony 2013. It is a Students’ Technical Meet, organised by the four departments English, Maths, Physics and Chemistry. The Chief Guest was Dr. R. Jayavel, Director, Centre for Nanoscience and Technology, Anna University.

MACHINE INTELLIGENCE

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering conducted a National Workshop on “Recent Advances in Microwave Devices & Antennas Technology” on 31st January and 1 February 2013. The Chief Guest Dr. P. Hanumantha Rao, Scientist-F, SAMEER (Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research), Taramani delivered a lecture on antenna technology.

School of Computing Sciences organised an International workshop on Machine Intelligence on 20th and 21st May 2013. The Chief Guest was Dr. Ajith Abraham, Director, Machine Intelligence Research Labs, USA.

A seminar on practical applications of data mining was organized by the School of Computing Science on 11th October 2012. The Chief Guest for the seminar was Prof. Dr. Kuriakose Athappilly, Professor in Business Information Systems Western Michigan University, USA.

The School of Management organized a seminar on the theme “Emerging Trends and Challenges in Retail Marketing” on 31st January 2013. The Chief Guest was Mr. Chackochen Mathai, GM-Business Development, Trends In Vogue.

Climate Change, Atmospheric Science & Free Space Optical Communication The center of excellence

in Photonics and Reseach conducted a seminar on “LIDAR and its Applications in Climate Change, Atmospheric Science and Free Space Optical Communication” on 18th march 2013. Dr. S. K. Hindustan Campus Recruitment Drive (HCRD) - Placement Day 2013 was celebrated on 11th April 2013, Hindustan University. The selected students from various departments were presented the appointment orders.

In view of Aerospace Day a seminar on “Recent Trends in Aircraft Structures” was conducted on 10th January 2013 by the School of Aeronautical Sciences. Dr. M. Sathyamoorthy, Associate Dean of Engineering and Computer Sciences, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of Texas, USA delivered a lecture.

Republic Day celebration was held on 25th January 2013. The Chief Guest Major D. Chinnappan, Training Officer, NCC Group HQ Madras hoisted the National Flag.

TALK YOUR WAY TO SINGAPORE COMPETITION Hindustan University celebrated the International Women’s Day on 8th March 2013. The function was graced with the presence of Chancellor Dr. (Mrs.) Elizabeth Verghese and the Chief Guest Ms. Lata Krishnaswamy, Director, Krishnaswamy Associates. Ms. Harini Thyagarajan [2nd Year M.Tech. (PCI)] won a trip to Singapore in the debate competition “Talk Your Way To Singapore” as part of the Women’s Day Celebration.

Christmas Celebration

CENTRE FOR DEFENCE TECHNOLOGY STUDIES (CDTS) INAUGURATION OF THE CENTRE

The Christmas celebrations commenced on 14 December 2012. Participants from the Hindustan Group of Institutions gathered to adore the Divine Father. Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, welcomed the gathering with a poignant message. The Chief Guest Dr. V.M. Spurgeon, Associate Professor in Philosophy and Chaplain, Madras Christian College delivered the message. There was a special rendering by the children sponsored by World Vision. They presented a folk dance and a drama. Prizes were given to the winners, both staff & students of BIBLIA 2012 (Bible quiz).

28th Annual Day Celebration

Pononam 2012 Onam was celebrated on 25th August 2012. The function was inaugurated by famous Music Director and Playback Singer, Mr. Sarath. The special guests of the function were the children of the New Life Vision Orphanage, Chennai.

A Tripartite Cooperation Agreement was signed by (L-R) Dr Ian Wallace, Head, School of Defence & Security, Cranfield University, Dr Anand Jacob Verghese, Pro Chancellor, Hindustan University and Mr Laurent Camus of MBDA Missile Systems. The Agreement promotes a working relationship with similar goals between the parties, specifically; the design, development and delivery of Missile Systems Design & Capability (MSDC) courses. The agreement was executed on 2nd May 2013.

Anti-Ragging Day Anti Ragging Program was organized on 26th July 2012 to create awareness among the students. Dr. C. Sylendra Babu IPS, ADGP, Coastal Security, Tamilnadu was the Chief Guest. He also flagged off the Anti-ragging rally to create awareness outside the campus.

CDTS is also: - A member of the Sovereign Knowledge Alliances of the UK. - Identified as a Knowledge Partner by the World Missile Systems Manufacturer, MBDA (UK).

A Ceremony was held to commemorate the life and achievements of our Founder Chairman Late Dr. K.C.G. Verghese, on 14th February, 2013 The Chief Guest for the occasion was Rev. Dr. Xavier Alphonse, Director ICRDCE, Chennai. The event was conducted in the Andromeda Lecture Theatre. The Theatre was inaugurated before the event. Andromeda is an architectural marvel and can seat more than 500 people. It is one of a kind in Asia.

A batch of eight students from Dongguk University, South Korea attended the 4 months E.I.B.I.S. (English, Indian History and Business for International Students) Course in the campus.

Olympic Run 2012

The Inter-Departmental Cultural Festival “YARONA 2013” was held on 15th & 16th of March 2013. The festival was inaugurated by Film Maker Mr. R. S. Prasanna, an Alumnus of the Institution. The two day cultural festival hosted about 25 events which saw great enthusiasm amongst the staff & students. The Chief Guest for the Mr.V.Keshav valedictory function was Mr.V.Keshav, Deputy Editor and Chief Cartoonist of “The Hindu” and the Guest of Honour was Mrs. Mili M. G. Chandy. The overall championship trophy was won by the Science & Humanities Department.

Mr. Karthigeyan, BCA Dept. represented Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the recent Indian Premier League 2013.

The School of Sports and Games and Y’s Men International jointly organised the Olympic Run 2012 on 22nd July from Madhya Kailash to Tidel Park, Taramani. This event was to encourage the participants in Olympics and honour the Olympians. Mr. Mike Nithavrianakis, British Deputy High Commissioner of South India presided over the event. Dr.Anand Jacob Verghese, Pro Chancellor flagged off the run.

Our NSS Cell and Madras Voluntary Blood Bank jointly organized the blood donation camp at MGR Hall on 31-01-2012. The Kilpak Medical College Chennai brought the mobile blood donor unit. The youth red cross and Voluntary health Service brought their team for our camp. Totally 356 units of blood were collected from our staff and students.

The formal ice-breaking ceremony FIESTA 12 jingled through the University on 12th October 2012. The Chief Guest for the event, Mr. Thomas Verghese, Vice-President and Global Head - Talent Engagement, Tata Consultancy Services, was impressed by the talents of the students.

The Indian Overseas Bank, Hindustan University Branch was inaugurated on 28th December 2012 in the new premises inside the University by Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Pro Chancellor, Hindustan University in the presence of Mr. A.D.M. Chavali, Executive Director, Indian Overseas Bank and Mr. K. Parthasarathy,Chief Regional Manager, Indian Overseas Bank. ‘The Gap Theory’, the Global Music Ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ International band from USA performed a concert at the Open Air Theatre on 7th September 2012.

Our NCC Cadets participated in the Marina Republic Day Celebration parade (MRDC) on 26th January 2013.

Our NSS Cell celebrated the Gandhi Jayanthi at Government Middle School, Padur and Thantai Periyar Hr. Sec. School Puzhuthivakkam on 4th October 2012 at the school campus. We conducted some programme and distributed the Sweets to all the students.

Cancer Institute visit

The Youth Red Cross members visited the Cancer Institute as a part of the campus social service extension programme on 22nd December 2012. The Youth Red Cross members collected old clothes, dates, biscuits, toiletries, tooth-paste, powder, and new sarees for the cancer patients in the hospital and distributed them.

Our NSS cell and Hindustan Y’s Youth club (Y’s Men Club) jointly organized the Special camp at Siruthavur village (near Thiruporur) from 27th March to 2nd April 2012. U.S. Consulate General, Chennai Acting Consul General Nick Manring presided over the function and Actor Dr. Vijay was the Chief Guest. Dr. K. Sarukesi, Vice-Chancellor, Hindustan University received the Green Initiative Award from the Chief Guest.

More than 1 lakh people visited the show and Our University was the only institution to participate in this Auto show.

IC 2014, CHENNAI INDIA 71st Y’s Men international convention The prestigious Y’s Men International Convention will be conducted from 7th -10th August 2014 at the Chennai Trade Centre. The International Youth Convocation is to be conducted at the Hindustan University from 4th - 10th August 2014.
