LOCAL NEWS

An exciting open-air market loved by residents and visitors alike has returned to Stockbridge this summer for the fourth year running.

The Neighbourgood Market, which welcomed over 80,000 visitors, plays host to some of Scotland’s best food and drink.

It will also play host to a Maker’s Market on the weekends and put on live screenings of Wimbledon, while guests will also be able to watch the finals of the Scottish Street Food Awards in July.

Open from Wednesday to Sunday, midday to 9pm, the organisers say the Neighbourgood Market will be showcasing some of Edinburgh’s best food and drink for three three-week cycles. The first cycle will include some favourites including Mimi’s Bakehouse, Innis and Gunn and Mint Wraps.

Exciting newcomers will include Wanderer’s Kneaded, Don Papa Rum, Sando and Secret Garden Distillery.

There is a variety of entertainment planned this summer, including the return of Goose’s Pub Quizzes which will take place

twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Every weekend a Maker’s Market will be hosted, in partnership with Support the Makers, showcasing an array of local businesses and craft traders. A mix of locally produced goods will be on offer, including jewellery, textiles, freshly baked goods, artwork, candles, fresh meats, and much more.

A large TV screen will also return in July for Wimbledon and other sporting events and local musicians will play daily.

The Neighbourgood Market will be hosting the Scottish Street Food Awards from 19th to 23rd July. This is a new partnership and will showcase ten finalists from all over Scotland while they battle things out to be crowned the winner of Scottish Street Food.

An all-star panel will judge the overall winner while the public are encouraged to participate in the People’s Choice Award.

Both winners will then go on to compete in the British Street Food Awards in London.

Entry to the market is free during the week and £3 per person on weekends. Access is free for children at all times.

Studio Now Open!

After an ‘interesting’ start to the year with the flooding in the Canonmills area on the 30th December, combined with other maintenance issues, we’re delighted to announce the Studio has reopened, with a few aesthetic refreshments as well!

We’re also welcoming a new collaboration with Bert & May, who offer a stunning selection of artisanal hand-made encaustic/ cement tiles, with a beautiful collection of glazed ceramics to compliment, Moorish Zellige tiles, terrazzo and also natural terracotta. As well as introducing Bert & May to the Studio, we’re also excited about other new product ranges which have launched this year; Original Style have added a stunning new Murals range which offers a great alternative to wallpaper if you’re looking for something more dramatic. And the Victorian floor range has had a revamp of colours too, helping to give traditional homes and buildings a more personalized and modern twist. Ca’ Pietra have also expanded on their collection of timeless Parisian/ Moorish/Italian style decorative floor tiles, including a gorgeous range of glazed ceramic tiles to accompany this, and a collection of impressive stone effect porcelain tiles for easy maintenance.

If you’re looking for a more sophisticated finish - as opposed to the artisanal or

decorative, we do have a superb collection of large format tiles which offers a vast selection of marble effects, as well as other precious stones. This range can be used for wall cladding, or tiling in smaller formats, and we can also produce custom bathroom furniture such as basins and shower trays in the same material for a more co-ordinated look.

While there is a lot to see in the Studio we aren’t able to showcase everything that’s available to us, so if there’s anything in particular that you have in mind, please feel free to pop in to discuss, we’d be delighted to help!

INCREASING CONFIDENCE

Why have house prices risen this month?

This time of year is the busiest season for the housing market. Lots of people kick start their moves when the days get longer and the weather starts to warm up.

And because new sellers know they may have more potential buyers viewing their home, we often see asking prices edge up by around 1% at this time of year. But we’ve actually seen prices rise by almost double that this month. The average asking price for a home in Great Britain has increased by 1.8% in May, which has pushed prices to a record high of £372,894.

This larger than usual monthly increase follows lots of speculation about what might happen in the housing market this year. Towards the end of 2022 and at the start of this year, we saw some people pause their moving plans.

But this month we’ve see demand from potential home-buyers continue to exceed the levels during the same period before the

pandemic, with 3% more people enquiring to view properties for sale. Our property expert, Tim Bannister, says: “This month’s jump in new seller asking prices looks like a belated reaction and a sign of increasing confidence from sellers, as we’d usually see such a big monthly increase earlier in the spring season. One reason for this increased confidence may be that the gloomy start-of-the-year predictions for the housing market are looking increasingly unlikely.”

What does this mean if you’re thinking of selling your home?

We’re now in a much steadier housing market than we have been in recent years. If you’re looking to put your home on the market soon, the guidance from estate agents is to make sure it’s priced right first time, to avoid the need for a reduction later. Homes that are priced in line with the current market trends are the ones that are getting interest from buyers.

Award-winning artisan cheese shops up for sale.

Specialist business property adviser Christie & Co has been instructed to market George Mewes Cheese, two high turnover artisan cheese shops in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

George Mewes Cheese was first established in 2010 when former chef, George opened his Glasgow store, followed by a store in Edinburgh in 2015. Since then George has built an award-winning business which sources the finest cheeses from Britain and Europe, working closely with Hervé Mons, a top affineur based in France, and British affineur Neal’s Yard Dairy of London.

As well as the thriving retail business, George Mewes Cheese has built a reputation

as a leading wholesaler, supplying cheeses to prestigious Scottish hotels and restaurants.

These profitable stores are ideally positioned in affluent areas of both cities. George Mewes Edinburgh is located on Dean Park Street, in the vibrant area of Stockbridge while George Mewes Glasgow is situated on the cosmopolitan and eclectic Byres Road in the West End.

Having successfully navigated the Covid pandemic, and now generating consistently high sales in-store and online, George believes the time is right to pass over the reins to a new owner who can build on the current success.

How to make iced coffee

Iced coffee season is here — and we’re already dreaming of ways to make our favourite caffeine-fuelled, refreshing drink our own. Whether that’s mixing it with the nation’s favourite hazelnut and chocolate spread, throwing in some fresh mint or spiking it with a little booze, there’s only one way we’re getting through summer and that’s with iced coffee!

How do you make iced coffee?

It’s easy, really. All you need is a tall glass filled with ice, brewed coffee and some vanilla syrup (if you fancy). Mix it all up and there you have it! A decadent glass of homemade, no-fuss iced coffee.

If you really feel like pushing the boat out, you could make it using a shaker. Chuck all your ingredients in and shake, like a cocktail. Think of it like a non-alcoholic espresso martini!

What’s the difference between iced coffee and cold brew?

Iced coffee is, well, iced… coffee. It’s as simple as serving regularly brewed coffee over a glass full of ice. But if you want to get a little more technical, Lynsey says, “Iced coffee is made with espresso that’s brewed for around 25 seconds.”

Cold brew is a little less straightforward and requires a lot more time. Rather than simply serving regularly brewed coffee over ice, cold brew involves leaving course ground coffee steeped in cold water for a minimum of 12 hours.

The longer the coffee sits, the stronger (and tastier) the flavour.

Should you add sugar?

If you’re after a sweet kick, then yes. But it’s worth adding the sugary element in through syrup form (like vanilla or hazelnut syrup), especially if you’re adding it directly into cold coffee. This is because standard sugar granules won’t dissolve. If you’re wanting to use proper sugar, then dissolve it into your hot water beforehand.

Are freshly ground coffee beans a better choice?

Let’s face it, freshly ground coffee beans always taste better. But we’re not coffee snobs. So, if you’re in a rush or need that caffeine fix ASAP, there’s nothing wrong with using instant coffee.

What add-ins can you use?

Like anything, you can add your own spin on things. If you’re looking for something sweet, add a drop of vanilla syrup. You could even amp things up with a spoonful of ice cream (float-style or blended through, your choice).

Fancy something more indulgent? Add a couple teaspoons of cream.

What can I do to prevent my iced coffee from going watery?

To make sure your iced coffee doesn’t turn out to be a cold watery mess, try doubling down on the amount of coffee you’re using. Or, if you like, make your own coffee ice cubes. Simply make a batch of coffee, allow to cool, pour in an ice tray and freeze.
