Your rubbish bin will be collected - maybe not at normal time! Sunshine Coast Council has reassured its residents that their kerbside bins will be emptied this week although they may experience delays, after a safety issue was identified in the contractors’ waste collection trucks. Council’s waste collection contractor will run extra shifts each day using the vehicles that aren’t affected. Bins may also be emptied at an earlier or later time than usual and waste, recycling and garden waste bins may not all be emptied on the same day. Residents are asked to leave their bins on the kerbside until they’ve been emptied, and to wait until Monday 10 August 2020 before contacting council to raise any issues. Commercial bins serviced by front lift or rear lift vehicles should not be affected.

The year the Brisbane Ekka went missing! For 143 years, the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA) has been dedicated to championing and celebrating agriculture and achievement. Attending the Brisbane EKKA has become a right of passage for many of us from a very early age. Over the years the EKA has changed drastically. The forerunner of the Ekka was held as The Intercolonial Exhibition of 1876 and was held from the 22nn to the to 26th August. A public holiday was declared and on opening day 17,000 people attended - a colossal success given that the total population of Brisbane at the time was only 22,000. Visitors to the first show were treated to more than 1,000 exhibits and the show received 1,700 competition entries in more than 600 categories. One of the most popular features was a competition for the fastest walking farm horse. Food was served on long tables and the first showbag, a bag of coal - was free for all visitors. In 1879 Ekka patrons were amazed by telephones, microphones, electric lights and even an electric thief detector. Things that we take for granted today. 1887 saw the introduction of the first ride in Sideshow Alley - a merrygo-round whilst in 1894 saw the first fireworks display. The year the Brisbane Ekka went missing! (Continued from Previous Page) Ekka has since been held every year with only three exceptions - in 1919 due to the Spanish Flu epidemic, in 1942 when the grounds were used as a World War II staging depot and in 2020 due the the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

uses. Now again in 2020 the EKKA has been cancelled because of the COVID epidemic.

In 1920, the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) visited the Exhibition, following which the Association moved to incorporate the word "Royal" into its name as the Royal National Agricultural and

Industrial Association of Queensland, which over the years has been reduced, unofficially, to the Royal National Association (RNA). In recent years the RNA has registered as its trademark the word “Ekka”. In 1926 the first night time ring program was held following the introduction of electric lighting. During the Great Depression new entertainment was introduced including goat races that attracted some 100 competitors in a single show.

The 1950’s saw the beginning of the EKKA as we know it today as the Ekka fairy floss, butter board sandwiches, strawberry sundaes and dagwood dogs were introduced. Next year the EKKA will return!

Fun with History

In this cute photo taken at Fairview (Pattemore House) a few years ago, Val Carbery, nee Guille, is pictured in the foreground of the shot! She is also in the black and white photo - she is the small baby being held in this classic family gathering photo taken in late 1937 of the Pattemores, who built Fairview. Val's mum Alma Pattemore (5th from right) lived at "Fairview" as a young girl from about 1916, caring for her ailing grandmother Emily. Alma left to marry Maleny dairyman George Guille in 1934. Val Carbery still lives in Maleny and is married to Vince Carbery. They have 4 children, Graham, Alison, Cathy and Susan.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny On Thursday Vince Carbery and Alice Spittle 13 beat Bev Sockhill and Gillian Bradley 10 in match where Alice played “the peel of the century”, putting her partner ball through from a great distance and then making the hoop herself In another game Kath Smith with 5 bisques defeated Donna Manning and Priscilla Vickers 12 to 7 on a day perfect for being outside and exercising. Congratulations Priscilla on winning the division 4 club championship. All games were played in a good spirit with some adventurous souls braving miserable conditions. Raincoats in the middle of winter are no joke! Well done all players.

On Sunday, preparing for the open club championship,Sarah Widin and Vince played well to overpower Donna and Kath 19 – 10. Saturday morning practice is not just about practice drills. In the attached photograph Vince is discussing with Wallace Roy, Bev, Sarah and Gillian how to deal with a common wiring leave. The player of the black ball has left his opponents “wired”across hoop 1. They can’t hit each other because the hoop is in the way. He has then gone “home”to his blue partner ball either at hoop 2 or 3, a long way away, but visible to either red or yellow. The beauty of this leave is that it positions a nice pioneer at hoop 1 for either the black or blue if the long shot is missed by red or yellow

Playdays: Thursday and Sunday 1.00 pm for 1.30. Contact Sarah for other days. Please arrive at 1 pm for games to be arranged by 1.30.Supervised practice is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am on our excellent lawns, 200 m in on the right side of the show-grounds on entry.
