Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter Get in the Swim Locally This Summer! A lovely swimming pool and tennis courts provide valuable community facilities for Conondale. They are both run by a volunteer committee and are open every day 2 - 5pm. The Conondale Swimming Pool was built in the 1970's by the residents of the time. There is a 4 lane, 20m pool and a small kids pool. It is currently only opened from September until April each year. They offer Infant Water Familiarisation, Learn to Swim, Squad and Aquacise programs. Swimming lessons started on Feb 2nd. Interested? Please call Fiona on 0423707163 or email jfsh410@gmail.com. Squad starts in week 2 and Scott would love to have more kids to coach! Email
conondalesp@gmail.com or send us a message if you're interested. Conondale Pool also accepts Fair Play Vouchers for your children. Every year Conondale Pool continues to receive support from the Sunshine Coast Council through the community partnership funding. Without this money it would be a struggle to survive season after season and membership costs would increase dramatically to cover the pools running costs. The Pool Committee wants thanks Council for this continued support through the 20/21 season.
Maleny Swimming Pool Use of the Maleny Pool got off to a slow start this summer, and the volunteer committee have had to work hard through a series of
fi

complex issues. But the good news is that it’s open now! It opened on 28th January and will be open as per the timetable here for the remainder of the season. Unfortunately the Maleny pool is not able to offer learn to swim or squad at this moment, but will keep everyone posted with any developments. Maleny Pool is registered to accept Fair Play Vouchers for your children. For all enquiries please contact the Swim Club’s President at maleny.bramasole@gmail.com and you can follow any noti cations on their FB page: https://www.facebook.com/ MalenySwimmingClub Photo: Conondale Pool

COVID-19 Vaccinations Information From Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace
In my capacity as the Federal Member for Fisher it is important that I keep our community up to date with matters that could impact you and that of your family. As we head into year two of the pandemic it is more important than ever that we continue to do all we can to protect the lives of our fellow Australians. The rst COVID-19 vaccine to be approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is the P zer vaccine.
The P zer vaccine has met strict standards for safety, quality and ef cacy. The TGA provisional approval is for individuals 16 years of age and older. Two doses will be required – at least 21 days apart. In Australia COVID-19 vaccines will be rolled out in ve phases over the coming months and, over time, will involve more than 1,000 vaccination administration sites. Australia is a vaccination nation. We have one of the highest vaccination rates in the world. We understand that vaccines work. They save lives and they improve lives. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there at the moment, as well as a lack of access to information about the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines as they become available. The purpose of this letter is to assure you of the facts. Australia has one of the most rigorous and advanced medical regulatory processes of anywhere in the world. All vaccinations
must progress through the TGA’s stringent regulations.
The TGA is part of the Federal Department of Health, and is responsible for regulating therapeutic goods including prescription medicines, vaccines, sunscreens, medical devices and vitamins. Almost any product for which therapeutic claims are made must be entered in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) before it can be supplied in Australia. When any company, including those that supply vaccinations, wants to sell a prescription-only medicine in Australia, the TGA checks the evidence rst, and only approves medicine if the balance of bene t and risk is acceptable for a particular condition. In this way, the TGA protects the health of the Australian Public. Monitoring continues to occur even after approval. COVID-19 vaccines will be voluntary, universal and free. After an immunisation, you are far less likely to catch the disease you have been immunised against, and if you do catch it, it is more likely that your illness will be less severe and your recovery quicker. Vaccines train a person’s immune system to quickly recognise and clear out germs (bacteria and viruses) that can cause serious illness. They strengthen your immune system by training it to recognise and ght against speci c germs.

News from the Platypus Whisperer Out for a walk this morning and saw 5 possibly 6 Platypus. While photographing this one at Riverside boardwalk, noticed that it has something wrapped around it's neck. I wish people would take care and put their rubbish in the bins provided all through town. This is not "Bandit" this one has the band around the neck, unlike "Bandit" who had it wrapped bandolier fashion over the left leg and under the right leg. An unfortunate sidebar to coexistence with humans. An attempt to catch the animal and remove the band could result in major distress and possibly death.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch should you have further

What’s Happening on the Precinct The big news is that thanks to the determination of local Jo Turner and her band of volunteers, a Maleny Trail parkrun is now a reality – every Saturday on the Precinct! Come rain, hail or shine, runners, walkers and amblers now meet weekly at the MDSRC Clubhouse for the 5km Maleny Trail park run. It’s 6.45 for a 7am start and if its your rst time, you must go to the website at: https://www.parkrun.com.au/ malenytrail/ and register rst, to obtain your bar code. You’ll also nd the full list of times recorded and a fantastic pictorial gallery too. Dogs are welcome if on a lead - so bring the whole family along!
Public Stargazing Public Stargazing with the Sunshine Coast Astronomers is also a regular event. With some of the biggest public telescopes in SE Qld set to gaze up to the stars above, the astronomers have planned another Public Night on Feb 20th. As always, very dependent on weather and more info con rming will be posted to: https://www.facebook.com/ SunshineCoastAstronomyQLD/ before the evening. The venue is at the Maleny Golf Club on dusk (no pets please as they become a trip hazard in the dark).
Pattemore House Pattemore House in Porters Lane is going from strength to strength as
a heritage venue with a difference. You can visit every Friday between 10 am - 12 noon (no teas) or every last Saturday of the month, 1 - 4 pm, afternoon teas available.
Settlers Green and the Ziza Field Settlers Green and the Ziza Field are becoming more and more popular with walkers, families and picnickers, with many thanks to the MDSRC volunteers who keep the grass well mowed for everyone. And the Precinct’s Maleny Trail new map will be available soon, we’ll keep you posted. The troopers of the 5th Light Horse Regiment and their steeds are becoming a popular monthly attraction as they go through their paces together (weather-dependent) on the Ziza Field on the last Saturday of every month from 9.00 am. If they are there, they open up their Beersheba Living Museum for the public to enjoy.
Dog Etiquette It’s an unfortunate reality but it only takes a few to spoil if for all those doing the right thing. The Dog Inspectors have had to be called to do spot checks on the Precinct due to increasing incidents of dogs being off leash, and owners not picking up their pets' do-doo’s and taking them home. This is of particular concern in Unity Water’s Wetland Trail, where animals off-leash run through the

various wetland birds nests, destroying eggs, chicks and habitat. We ask that everyone does the right thing for the comfort of all the whole of the Precinct is a dogs on leash area at all times. We love this ditty, written by a local poet, it says it all.. Take Your Dog Turds Home With Thee To all who walk their woofers As pleasant as it be Could you please take Your dogs’ turds home They are not pleasurable to me. The squelching feeling that I get When I tread the boards Is one that I could do without On weekend morning walks Consideration for others Just seems to disappear When striding out With mans’ best friend To toilet where they care As plastic bags don’t cost a lot And sometimes they are free Please take your Dogs’ turds off the walks And take them home with thee. So, to all you woofer walkers No matter where you tread Please pick up your dogs’ turds And take them home instead. ©Neil Andison 2020 For more information visit our web site at: https://malenysportandrec.org.au/ https://malenysportandrec.org.au/

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Our two lawns were at capacity on the first Thursday of February. Ken Barker and Val Carbery teamed up against Donna Manning scoring 17 hoops to her 7. Also on lawn 1 Priscilla Vickers and Janelle Wilson put in some valuable team practice for
the Bray Shield competition scoring 8 against Lynette Evans and Gillian Bradley. Kath Smith and Sally Adams fought hard against Bev Sockhill and Helen Andrews unluckily going down 8 – 11 while Wallace Roy and Alice Spittle showed a complete lack of chivalry to defeat newcomer Kerry Lyons and her partner Sarah Widin. Welcome to the club Kerry. Hot weather kept players away on Sunday though out on the lawn, with a breeze blowing, it wasn’t too bad. Wallace and Helen 21, with Wallace pegging his red ball out, defeated Janelle and Lynette 7. Nick Cram and Sarah played a good game against Ken unfortunate to lose 12 -17. Normally “pegging out” is seen as something unfortunate yet in the attached photo (Upper Left)
Wallace demonstrates his pleasure at pegging out the red ball. Well done Wallace. Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days. Please arrive at 2 pm for games to be arranged by 2.30. Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am. We also play Association Croquet and Golf Croquet on Thursday and Sunday afternoons For details contact Vince Carbery 54942193 (president), or Priscilla Vickers 54943555 (secretary).
