Stand
A chance conversation between Maleny and District Sport and Recreation Club’s Mike Norman and Lionel Tilley of the Maleny Rotary Club about needing a lectern led straight to the Blackall Range Woodcrafters. With his twin hats as a Rotarian and Woodie firmly tilted, Lionel presented Mike’s request to the next Woodies meeting. Woodie Ron Turner, a former manual arts teacher at Maleny State High School and retired on the Range, immediately offered to design and build a timber lectern for use during presentations at the MDSRC clubhouse and Beersheba Living Museum. Lionel next quietly approached Maleny Rotary for a contribution to polish it off with the famous Rotary Wheel, and the other bits and pieces to be utilised in the design, which Rotary happily agreed to. The result was the surprise delivery of a beautiful piece, made from local timbers comprising red cedar and tallowwood, with the modern functional design reflecting Ron's masterful timber-work style. Mike, who is President of MDSRC said ”I really want to thank Ron and the Blackall Range Wood Crafters and Lionel and the Rotary Club of Maleny. The Covid situation temporarily closed all groups' venues down, including ours. But the upside was we took the opportunity to have a chat about what was still needed to make our venue even more user-friendly. We are delighted to be the recipients of this lectern, a unique addition that will get plenty of work now our facility is in use again”. Photo Above: (L-R Lionel Tilley, Mike Norman and Ron Turner)

Friday 20 November: The Wildcats had the bye. Whistlers played at Witta against Maroochydore Meteors. It was warm, but a nice breeze came through. We had great games, with 2 sets going to a tiebreak. Wednesday 25 November: It was a cooler day for tennis at Witta, where the Witta Wagtails played Maroochydore Sapphires. At the end of the day both teams had scored 4 sets. However, the Wagtails were pipped at the post by 3 games. Well done Wagtails for a great effort. Thanks to Cynthia Garvie, Cheryl Cavanagh, Sheryn Golledge & Sonia Douglas. Friday 27 November: Wildcats forfeit loss. The Whistlers played at Mooloolaba against the Legends. It was a warm day and it was a long day. A Family Day Out The final open day for 2020 at Fairview (Pattemore House) became an unexpected treat of family histories colliding, as members of the three family ‘eras’ interpreted at Pattemore House were all represented last Saturday.
The Howard family were sharefarmers who lived in and worked the dairy farm when the Pattemores sold the farm after the death of JR Pattemore in 1947, aged 97, at the time, Maleny’s oldest man.
Built in 1907 from white beech, the historic family farmhouse is listed on the Queensland State Heritage Register. However, it is not presented as a museum rather, the Friends of Pattemore House have chosen to offer displays that interpret family life from 1907 to today through stories, film and pictures collected from the families themselves.
He and his wife Emily are buried at the Witta Cemetery. The Howard family were share-farmers who lived at and worked the dairy farm between the Pattemore and the Armstrong years.
The Pattemore years 1907 - 1948 The “Middle” or share farming years The Armstrong years 1969 - 1995
The still functioning) walkthrough dairy bails were constructed by the Pattemore family around 1908/10 from white beech pit-sawn timber. They were in continuous use from 1908 until 1995. Today, those bails form an attraction for walkers on
the Heritage and Poetry Trail on the Maleny Community Precinct. George and Barbara Armstrong continued the dairy-farming way of life, and theirs was the last family to live at Pattemore House
prior to it being acquired from them by Caloundra City Council in 1995. All three families decided independently to visit Fairview last Saturday - an historic occasion indeed! Present were 11 members each of both the Pattemore and Armstrong clans, with two Howards also joining in the fun. Pictured enjoying the comraderie (and afternoon teas) on the veranda are (back L-R) Vince Carbery, George and Barbara Armstrong, Val Carbery (nee Guille, JR Pattemore’s great granddaughter) and in front, Greg and Robyn Howard. Val recalls visiting the family home as a girl, for Sunday lunches and family gatherings, noting "You had to be on your best behaviour for old JR”. The next Saturday public open day will be on Saturday 30th January 2021 from 1 - 4 pm and you can follow all things Pattemore House at: https://www.facebook.com/ pattemorehouse

Public Astronomy Night at Maleny Golf Club! The Brisbane Astronomical Society is delighted to once more offer a public stargazing night on Saturday 12th December at the Maleny Golf Club. Be there promptly by sunset (6:30) for the laser guided tours and satellite spotting – then it’s onto telescope viewing through the largest public accessible telescopes in South East Queensland. This will be a moonless night, concentrating on deep sky objects only visible on these nights. Weather permitting, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune will all be on view. The best of the photographs by members throughout 2020 will also be a feature of the evening. No knowledge or equipment is necessary, just bring your curiosity. All ages and abilities are welcome! The public session will conclude at 9.00 pm. Organisers ask that all attendees park on the road and walk in, as car lights will impair the night vision essential for these Dark Sky events. Sorry, but no pets as they are a tripping hazard in the night. Donations are appreciated but not compulsory. We suggest $5 per person or $10 per family. All proceeds go to expenses incurred running these nights. Members of the Brisbane Astronomical Society and/or the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance are free. IMPORTANT - Weather update will occur on Sunshine Coast Astronomy-QLD Facebook page in the days leading up to the event, so please do check this page before turning up at: https://www.facebook.com/SunshineCoastAstronomyQLD ALL COVID RESTRICTIONS WILL APPLY. MAKE SURE YOU ARE UP TO DATE WITH PRESENT RESTRICTIONS AT https://www.qld.gov.au/.../public.../movements-gatherings Please bring hand sanitizer and sign the register when you come.
