Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter Maleny Locals Recognized for their Work Achievements Acknowledging and recognising people taking pride in their work is something that’s rarely done. It’s not about winning prizes, it’s purely about taking the time to show appreciation for a job well done. 29th

On Saturday August, the Rotary Club of Maleny did this at a presentation dinner at Tranquil Park and gave several nominated people a ‘Pride of Workmanship’ award plaque in recognition of going above and beyond in their everyday work. 6 people were nominated and regrettably one nominee, Melody Fanti, bakery manager at Super IGA Maleny, was unable to attend due to an IGA work function on the same evening. Rotary club will do a separate presentation to Melody.

they deserved to receive this recognition. It was also wonderful to see such a cross section of people from various walks of life. There were: Clive Powell – Volunteer groundsman, gardener, painter, joint curator and more at Pioneer Village Debbie Rossow – Learning Support Facilitator at the Maleny Independent School Gayle Pope – Library Offi cer at Maleny Library Neal Charlton – Electrician & Sole Trader at Traditional Maintenance Sherri Dan – Food & Beverage Services at Hotel Maleny Melody Fanti, bakery manager at Super IGA Maleny

The nominees brought their partners and friends along to enjoy the night with them. It was interesting to see some lingering and chatting with each other long after the official part of the evening finished. A big thanks to Alan Wilson, a past president in the Maleny Rotary Club, who pushed late last year to have this event held again after a gap of 8-9 years. Little did we know then what 2020 held for us and so it seems even more timely that this event was held. Next year, it’ll be on again, so start thinking about who you would like to see recognised to receive a ‘Pride of Workmanship’ award.

The other 5 nominees did attend, together with their respective nominators, the people that took the time to write some words about why they deserved to be recognised for this award. It was smiles all around and even a couple of tears of joy when each nominee was presented with their award and the person who nominated them spoke about why Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club Inc

Around Division 5 with Cr Winston Johnston Pet Registration Renewals now due

Pet registration renewals are on the way - renewal is due by September 30.

de-sexed and micro-chipped with the cost being just $14 or free for pensioners.

Pet registration helps Sunshine Coast Council to reunite lost pets with their owners and it also helps to plan for services such as off-leash areas for dogs, education programs to promote responsible pet ownership and the animal pound.

There is also the option of a lifetime registration for de-sexed and microchipped cats – only $83 with no annual renewal fee required.

New residents to the Sunshine Coast can transfer their cat or dog registration for free, so if you’ve recently moved to the area now is the time to contact us and register your pet. Significant registration fee discounts apply for dog and cat owners who have had their pets

Registration is free for pets under six-months-old. PRELIMINARY clearing works have been completed at the four major lookouts around Maleny, with council staff hard at work to keep them tidy, well-maintained and with adequate signage. I’m also

pleased to announce a $100,000 upgrade will begin after the September school holidays (weather and site conditions dependant) to improve the picnic areas at Mary Cairncross Park, Maleny. Community Action - Speak Up Now! Speak Up Now, a collaboration of the combined service clubs of Blackall Range, held its inaugural public meeting recently in the RSL Hall in Maleny to highlight the need for community action against domestic and family violence (DFV). The audience of invited representatives from community groups across the Range heard speakers from four service providers in the Sunshine Coast area detail their role in the fight against violence and abuse of more subtle kinds that cause trauma and death among women. Maleny resident Fiona Dempster, after many years at the forefront of public service work in the area, expresses her empathy through her much sought after little white ‘books’ crafted in paper and tile. She is passionate about ‘bystander’ intervention and says, ‘silence helps no one…be a voice.’ Queensland Police have developed Vulnerable Persons Units (VPU) in regions throughout the state. Officer in charge at the Sunshine Coast, Senior Sgt Kate Teasdale explained the importance of finding what ‘works’ in each separate case and strengthening ties with community support agencies for referral to prevent re offence. Sunshine Cooloola Outreach Prevention and Evaluation (SCOPE) performs an extensive role in women’s risk management and safety assessment, and for men, referral to appropriate services for behaviour management.

responsibility for the actions and accountability for the future. Fourth speaker Karen Marsh, men’s facilitator for the DFV program of Uniting Care in the area, outlined the work of their 16 week rolling group sessions for men. “Those coming into the group at week one have the benefit of seeing how the program has worked in changing the behaviour of those nearing the end. We teach them not to react, but to respond, and this is the theme I have used in developing a program for primary age children,” said Karen.

Speak Up’s Val France with speakers Kate Teasdale, Stacy Oehlman, Karen Marsh and Fiona Dempster.

Coordinator of SCOPE Stacy Oehlman said prevention was dependent on helping the perpetrator accept

Spokesperson for SPEAK UP NOW said the committee was pleased with the audience response. “They were impressed by the work being performed by the agencies, there was a feeling that more should be done with children in primary schools, more responsibility from the community to ‘intervene’ where it is safe, and the evening generated some ideas for our further discussion. “We will be assessing it all, consulting with stakeholders and deciding how to implement their ideas, keeping the community involved at every stage,” she said.
