Maleny’s Sam Hughes is 18 years old, not too long ago passed his driving test – and is about to embark on a gap year adventure like no other. Also known as the Travelling Jackaroo, Sam is just about to hit the road in the outback trip of a lifetime, as he prepares to travel 13,500 kilometres on a bright orange tractor. Maleny locals will recognise the young man, who regularly drives into the
main street of Maleny on the weekends. “Most kids have a gap year,” he says. “I love tractors and I thought, why not do something different?” Sam will be driving a fully restored Chamberlain 9G tractor on a yet-to-be nalised route across the Australian outback, fundraising for three charities along the way. “I will be stopping in all the major country town to fundraise,” he says. “The tractor only goes 45 to 50 kilometres per hour, so it should be interesting.” He has also had built a customised trailer to tow a car and store essential items, and as if he wasn’t a conversation starter enough, the trailer has been tted with the fuselage of an old plane on top.

Air eld a while ago and I was thinking I would do it up and put it on top of a shed or something,” Sam says. “Then when I started planning this I thought, hey, what if put the plane on the roof of the trailer?” With one of his chosen charities being the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Sam has been in touch with the charity to have the plane, which will double as a sleeping space for his long journey, painted to look like a working aircraft. “I chose the Royal Flying Doctors Service because if you speak to anyone in the bush, everyone knows someone who has been saved by them.” Sam is also supporting Dolly’s Dream, to raise awareness for bullying, and Lights on the Hill Trucking Memorial, in recognition of the sacri ces truck drivers make to do their job. “I think it’s important to give back and I have grown up being taught if you have money to spend you have money to give.” Sam says he is very grateful for the support he’s received from local business and organisations Continued Next Page https://malenysportandrec.org.au/

Maleny Show-grounds Camping Maleny Showgrounds is open for camping. This ground offers camping year-round (maximum 3 night stay), except during major events & seasonal blackout dates. Maleny’s on the Map by Angus Richard
An updated map of the Maleny Trail has been released this month which includes the recently opened Northern Wetlands Walk on the Maleny Precinct. The new map has proved very popular with visitors and locals, and has once again been generously sponsored by Rob and Sam Outridge of the Maleny IGA. “The Maleny Trail, Northern Wetlands Walk and the Maleny Golf Club are a real asset to us all from both a social and business perspective,” said Rob. “The map, through its wide distribution, provides a window into the area for prospective visitors. For locals, it keeps us all up to date as to the exciting additions to our wonderful Community Precinct.” The Northern Wetland Walk is a key feature of the map. The 1.8 km easy walk can be accessed off Parklands Drive. Look for the street sign halfway down the hill. At that point there is an unassuming grass track leading to the start of the wetlands loop. The walk offers great views and a myriad of birds to enjoy along the way. Settlers Green, a new park on the Precinct created by a community project team, is now “on the map”. A row of native trees has been planted alongside Parklands Drive, each dedicated in recognition of the extraordinary and often courageous role played by the early female pioneers.

For anyone who does not know the origins of the name, The Battle of Ziza celebrates a truly unique event in the Great War where Turkish and Australian forces combined over one night to resist a potential Arab onslaught! New photographs were supplied for the map by Penny Edwards and Max Whitten. When you see Max ask him about the “royal” Maleny Golf Course. It is a great story! Special thanks to the volunteers of the Maleny Visitor Information Centre, from where maps can be obtained and Graham Gardine, who coordinated all their valued input. The cost effective and talented local designer Jonathan Adkins again refreshed the map with all its updates and changes. In all, generous local sponsorship combined with the enthusiasm and input from many wonderful people has delivered a map that will continue to be enjoyed by visitors and locals alike.

Maleny Cricket Club
Maleny Redbacks 3rd Division side have secured a spot in the Grand Final with an outright win against Tewantin Noosa Thunder.
Cameron Kronk steadied the order with a vital 23. Jake
Bowling rst, the Redbacks were on the front foot early with opening bowlers Brock Barry and Jack Williams restricting the opposition to 1 for 20 off 17 overs.
Tewantin went into their second innings chasing an outright victory. Once again Maleny's opening bowlers dominated the TNT batsmen. Brock Barry 3 for 27 off 13 overs and Jack Williams 3 for 28 off 13 overs had Tewantin reeling at 6 for 52. Bailey Jackson (2 wickets), Jacob Gosling (1 wicket) and Dan Hand (1 wicket) cleaned up the tail to bowl TNT out for 71.
Jason Weckert and Dan Hand continued the tight lines, with Weckert taking 2 for 19 off 16 overs and Hand claiming 1 for 22 off 15 overs.
Heading (pictured) held the tail together, however at 9 for 84 the Redbacks were at risk of losing the game. Jacob Gosling (11 runs) entered the crease and combined with Heading to secure Maleny a vital rst innings victory.
When Kyle Jackson (2 for 11 off 5 overs) and Cameron Kronk (3 for 29 off 9 overs) nished off the innings, Tewantin-Noosa were bowled out for 96. Maleny found batting dif cult with the top order failing to re. The Redbacks were in trouble at 5 for 33.
Heading then looked to increase the total moving on to 42no and Maleny claiming a 34 run lead.
Needing 38 to win, the Redbacks were keen to knock the total off quickly. Ryan Harlow led the way securing 21no and grabbing a Maleny outright victory. Maleny will now play Maroochydore in the Grand Final over the next two weekends. Go the Redbacks.
Councillor Winston Johnston - Division 5 Sunshine Coast Council Maleny Showgrounds Amenities Upgrade - update. This amenities facility is funded 50% by the Federal Government via a Federal Government Showgrounds Ground Improvement Grant, which the Maleny Show Society were successful in obtaining in early 2020 following their grant application in 2019. I am happy to advise that the Maleny Showgrounds Amenities Upgrade will be commencing this week. This project is joint funded with the help of the State Government grant and Maleny Show Society. Works to include: Site preparation including the removal of the existing vegetation; Construction and tout of amenities building; Landscaping, drainage and pathways including PWD car space; Environmental management including erosion and sediment control; Site management including safety; traf c and pedestrian management; Works are expected to be completed by April 30th in time for the Maleny Show.

Platypus Whispers Guided Tour Did you know that you can now experience a Guided Walk of the unique Maleny Platypus habitat? Maleny local Neil Andison invites you to share his wealth of knowledge about the platypus, bird-life, habitat and so much more. Starting at the Maleny Showgrounds, you can join Neil for fascinating guided walks along the Obi Creek – and all you need are your curiosity and your camera! Platypus Whispers Guided Walks will be for approximately 3 hours, with starting times of 6 am & 4 pm each Fri, Sat, Sun, and Mon. Follow the Obi Creek along the Boardwalk, through town and then out to the Beersheba Platypus viewing platform on the Maleny Precinct. Along the way you'll learn where to look, and discover what to look for when searching for the elusive Platypus!

Stargazing This Saturday!
Sunshine Coast Astronomers were disappointed indeed last Saturday, when the cloudy weather once more led to the cancellation of the scheduled Public Stargazing Evening. However, in an act of supreme optimism, they are keen to try again this coming Saturday, March 13th. If you’ve always wanted to know more about the stars, this is your next chance. The Brisbane Astronomical Society invite you to attend - their venue is the Maleny Golf Club in Porters Lane, and you need to be ready and on the grounds by sunset for the start of proceedings. If you have a telescope lying around but do not know how to use it, be there and set up as much as you can earlier than that, and the BAS members will assist you. An interesting presentation in the marquee on their new wide screen will be followed by a laser-guided tour of the night sky - then you’ll be treated to telescope viewings through the largest public accessible telescopes in South East Queensland. Bring your mobile phone for a shot of the moon through one of these scopes! No knowledge or equipment is necessary, just bring your curiosity. Aboriginal astronomy is an ongoing theme on public nights, with Australian indigenous astronomy predating any other culture. It is a fantastic familyfriendly activity. All ages and abilities are welcome and organisers do ask that you please park on Porters Lane and walk in if possible to avoid headlight interference when you leave. Sorry but no pets can be accommodated as they are a tripping hazard in the dark. A suggested $5 per person or $10 per family donations is appreciated but not compulsory. Members of the Brisbane Astronomical Society and/or the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance are free. All proceeds collected go towards the expenses incurred in running these nights. Plastic straws gone?
Australians consumed one million tonnes of single use plastic each year which is environmentally unsustainable. Following a recent community consultation the Queensland Government is poised to pass laws t that will make it illegal for businesses to sell a range of plastic products, including straws and cutlery. The ban could start as early as September. By 2025 the plan calls for all products on supermarket shelves to carry the Australasian Recycling Label, and for l00 per cent of packaging to be recyclable, reusable or compostable.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Four hardy players having no thought of their own well-being ventured onto the lawn with rain bucketing down on the rst Thursday of March.
Craig teamed up to make 9 hoops against Donna Manning making 7 while Miggy Mackie and Sarah had an exciting draw 16 all. It was a good day of play.
This is a safer option with the possibility of red to 2 on the way to yellow then use yellow to get behind blue. Black and Blue retain control.
Sarah Widin teamed with Janelle Wilson to narrowly, yet convincingly, trounce Wallace Roy and Lynette Evans 17 – 16, an excellent game partly due to the weather clearing after the rst twenty minutes of play.

The lawns lled on Sunday. Lawn 2 saw a hard-fought game between Nick Cram and Vince Carbery with Nick nishing slightly ahead 13 – 11.

Ken Barker Played in Toowoomba in the Rene Cole losing three from three which did not detract from his enjoyment of the tournament. He would like to thank the Toowoomba clubs for their hospitality. In the attached photo Miggy Mackie shows her experience in attempting to roquet red as black heads for hoop 1. The yellow ball is a more obvious way to build a break with yellow to hoop 2 on the way to red then a good rush on blue to hoop 1.
