Maleny Show The 2021 Maleny Agricultural show is on Friday and Saturday, May 28-29. The Maleny Show Covid Safe plan being lodged and accepted last week by the government, makes the show society committee do a happy dance! Maleny Show Society secretary Lois White said that 2021 would feature a diverse range of
entertainment over both days to appeal to all ages. However, she knows the monster truck shows will be a massive drawcard. The ever popular dog jump will be on at the Show on Saturday the 29th May from 3pm. Bring your 4 legged friend to test their skills at our

Where’s Sam?
Your Club News
Trying to keep up with all of Sam’s and his dog Bitza's adventures whilst they're on the road is keeping everyone on their toes. He was dropping into the Stockman's Hall of Fame at Longreach yesterday, has sheared sheep, helped with fencing and mustering and the Chamberlain has taken part in street parades.
If your club or organisation is an associate member of the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club then you can publicise your club results and news in this, our “Community Billboard”.
He left one of his famous hats in good company on the Wellshot Hotel's bar wall at Ilfracombe and we hear Sam is getting used to media attention, as TV and radio stations interview him on a regular basis. In great news, he and his unusual rig are certainly helping lift awareness of why he is doing what he is.
Keep your events diary up to date on the MDSARC Inc Web site so that we all know about your communities important events.
On the eve of Dollys Day, Sam congratulated everyone who’s donated to Dolly’s Dream, one of his chosen charities. “Together we’ve now raised almost $9,000 for Dollys. Congratulations everyone, great effort let’s keep it up!” piped Sam.
This is your newsletter - let all of Maleny know the latest info from your club every week!
Sam shows movies on the side of his trailer when the opportunity arises in the towns he travels through, and shakes the tins at every stop! If you’d like to donate, just go to:
All articles, results, posters and photos (as large sized jpegs, please do not embed these in a Word doc) for inclusion in the weekly sports results should be emailed to
https://dollysdream.org.au/donate/ What is Dolly’s Dream? After Dolly tragically left them, her parents Kate and Tick could see that Dolly’s story had touched people everywhere and felt the best way to remember their beautiful girl was to start a nationwide conversation about the devastating effects of bullying.

Around one in four Australian school children are bullied and one in ve are cyber bullied each year. But it’s not only our kids who are impacted – around 45 million bullying incidents take place across Australia’s schools annually and it costs our whole community greatly. And for those who lose a loved one because of it, the cost is immeasurable. Your generous support enables the development of vital bullying prevention and online safety programs that can be provided to kids, families, schools, and communities across Australia. Sam’s trip is helping to bring awareness to the charities Dolly’s Dream, The Royal Flying Doctor Service and Lights on the Hill. Please phone Jill Morris on 0427 624 090 for further information and to con rm if you are attending. We will be reading The Cocktail Party, a comedy by T S Eliot, which the poet/playwright completed after many drafts (acknowledging mentor E Martin Brown) in time for the 1949 Edinburgh Festival. Eliot made substantial changes to Act III following the festival performance - which were included in our published version (1950).

If readers have favourite poems by Eliot, please bring them along to share. We don't think of Eliot as a playwright but he did write Murder in the Cathedral! The Cocktail Party is elegantly written, with 8 satisfying parts. .. No need to dress for cocktails - but there will be tea, coffee and something sweet. All welcome! Rotary Club of Maleny Meets the Platypus Whisperer We had a great speaker at Rotary recently. Our Guest Speaker for the night, Neil Andison, is AKA the Maleny Platypus Whisperer. Neil went to sea at age 15. He spent 10 years in the Australian Navy and then 10 years in the RAAF. He retired in 2000 after running an electrical business as well as a job driving cherry pickers. He peppered his presentation with loads of platypus facts as well as photos taken of the platypus he has encountered, and named, in the Obi Obi in the stretch from the Showgrounds to the Community Precinct. He cleared up early the misconception that the plural of the platypus, a marsupial, correctly called Ornithorhynchus anatinus, is ‘Platypus’ not ‘Platypii’ as some of us learned at primary school. Some fun platypus facts noted by Neil: A fully-grown platypus should have approximately equal proportions of tail, body and head/beak. Neil can often tell the female platypus by bare patches on their tails.
minutes underwater, they drown. Dingoes, Pythons, Birds of Prey as well as feral cats, dogs and also domestic dogs prey on platypus. In dry weather they can travel up to 8km overland to reach another waterhole. When you see a king sher in a creek or waterhole, good chance a platypus may be nearby. Platypus can detect electrical impulses of their prey as well as the pressure waves of obstacles in the water that they need to negotiate. Neil has an absolute passion for the platypus in the 1.8 km reach of the Obi Obi which he has been observing and photographing for 8 years. He gets up at 4.30am most mornings to walk the creek, looking for the familiar ripples in the water made by the movement of the platypus bills.
They are genetically similar to birds and reptiles (they walk like a reptile) Males have 2 spurs on the inside of the back legs, these spurs have a toxic venom. They are found exclusively in Australia & only found east of the Dividing Range. They can live up to 20 years in the wild. They cannot hear or see, eat or breathe underwater. They use electro and mechano receptors to sense their food sources. They mate between June- October in Queensland. They need to forage for about 16 hours per day to maintain good health, so can be seen at any time of day if you are patient and have time to wait…and wait…to spot them. The biggest danger to them are shing nets- their heads get caught in the netting and as they can only survive about 3

He has identi ed at least 11 individuals, many of which he has named and can identify by markings on their bill or head. He showed pictures of Patch, Little Patch, Polyanna and Cleft. In 2020 he turned his passion into a business and now he leads Platypus Whispers tours for small groups on the Obi Obi. His mobile number is: 0412 518 952 or check out his Facebook page if you would like to join one of his 3-hour tours which run from 6am or 4pm on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Mondays.
