Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter Maleny Trail parkrun Hits the Ground Running

A

round the world, parkrunners meet every Saturday, ran, hail or shine. “Parkruns” are free, timed, weekly 5km runs that enhance communities across the globe. Their ethos is simple – to make the world a healthier, happier place. “ And it certainly does that,” said Maleny Trail parkrun event director Joanne Turner. “Maleny is one of the newest members of the parkrun family on the Sunshine Coast, and when we say family, we mean it. The run is like an umbrella that instantly connects people. . This week in Maleny, 111 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 72 were rst timers and 17 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 11 different clubs took part. Now you may think running up and down hills is not your idea of fun. But looking at the grinning faces at the start line of the Maleny Trail parkrun you will begin to ask yourself if you can have what they’re having. It’s a fantastic way to see new places ... lace up your runners and nd the nearest parkrun. You get to meet the locals and an insider’s view of a place. The parkrun family really look after each other, even if you’ve never met.”

Run it, walk it, it doesn’t matter - one of the beauties of it all is that it appeals to runners and walkers alike, and is dog friendly as long as your pooch is on a lead. Maleny Trail parkrun is not the attest run around the Coast, but as it takes place on the Maleny Community Precinct, it is certainly one of the prettiest to be found anywhere. But looks alone are not the most important factor to Joanne and her team of volunteers. “I would love our Maleny Trail to be known for being one of the friendliest parkruns around. We are so lucky to be able to showcase our beautiful little town, to enhance our community and local businesses and to be able to offer a free, friendly healthy activity for local and visiting families. It’s such a fantastic opportunity for us, I absolutely love what our unique parkrun brings to its equally unique community.” Last Saturday was the 5th Maleny Trail parkrun staged so far; the inaugural run was on 19th December 2020. Since then 351 participants have completed 458 parkruns covering a total distance of 2,290 km, including 38 new Personal Bests. A total of 28 individuals have volunteered 51 times to make sure the event runs smoothly. The start and nish point is at the MDSRC Clubhouse at the bottom of Parklands Drive (via Porters Lane) on the Precinct. It’s 6.45 for a 7am start each Saturday, and if its your rst time, you must go to the website at: https://www.parkrun.com.au/malenytrail/

The Great Maleny Safe Robbery of 1937

In the early hours of 1st December 1937, the night air of the small town of Maleny was shattered by a thunderous explosion. As the smoke cleared, down in the bed of Obi Obi Creek, two men ri ed through a shattered safe. From the nearby streets the two men could hear shouts and see torches ashing as a crowd ran down towards the creek. Grabbing what they could from the safe the two men sprinted into the darkness. In 1937, Maleny was a quiet little town in the hills above what would later become the Sunshine Coast. The majority of the area was given over to dairying or timber cutting. The main street, lined with shops, wound uphill from the bridge over Obi Obi Creek. It was not far from this bridge, on the site of the former Maleny butter factory, that Victor Alexander Magee had his shop, a drapery which sold Manchester, clothing and shoes. At about 2am on Wednesday, 1st December, 1937, Cyril William McKillop, a butcher, noticed a light on in Magee & Co and immediately phoned Victor Magee. Upon hearing the news Magee immediately phoned the Landsborough Police Station, Maleny being too small to have its own.

Before heading towards his shop and before he was able to investigate there was a loud explosion.

As Magee and other townspeople rushed to the site they found the safe blown apart beneath the bridge over the creek, some small change scattered around on the ground and the cash draw missing. In the darkness two men were seen running away on the other side of the creek but, despite an extensive search of the area, they were not found. Despite their efforts, all the thieves managed to make off with were two leather overcoats to the value of about £20, and cash worth about £3. Despite the meagre haul the spectacular manner in which they had carried out the robbery ensured the two men were the subject of an intensive manhunt. At the time it was thought they had made their getaway in a waiting car and the police in Landsborough stopped and search any cars coming from the direction of Maleny. A search was also made of the area around Maleny but no trace of the men was found. When the case came to trial in mid-December, 1937, Ronald Stokes pleaded guilty but would not implicate his partner in crime, Jacob Russell. He explained

that he and his mate had ‘jumped’ a train at the Bowen Hills railway yards and got off at Landsborough before making their way to Maleny. After picking a store to rob, Stokes said he had rst tried to kick in the front door of Magee’s shop but instead had to break through the bro wall. After moving the safe and blowing it open beneath the bridge, he grabbed the cash draw and they ran as people came to investigate. However, after a short distance he threw the whole cash draw away because it had rattled too much when he ran. After they had ed the scene it had started raining and they were soaked as they hid in bushes by the side of the road while cars searching for them went past. They then walked a fair distance in the rain before encountering a mail truck heading north. Clambering on to the back of it they ended up in Gympie where they managed to get on the south bound freight train, their journey coming to an abrupt end at Zillmere, where Ronald Stokes was arrested. The robbery of Magee’s had been no well-planned heist but instead was a rather shambolic affair. Despite going to the effort of traveling from Brisbane to Maleny, breaking into Magee’s, manhandling the safe to beneath the Obi Obi Bridge and blowing it apart, all they got away with was a

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Several players have already put their name on the notice board to play in the two interclub tournaments for the Sunshine Coast region – the Lochwood, for players with handicaps of 9 or less and the Bray for players with handicaps of 10 and above. These tournaments are a great way to get into match play situations with someone helping. Check out the noticeboard. Put your name up if you haven’t already done so. Thursday saw stunning weather with some entertaining play on both lawns. On lawn 1 Gillian Bradley and Bev Sockhill 13 had a good win against Sally Adams and Lynette Evans 4; Sarah Widin showed that she hadn’t lost form

over the break by beating Kath Smith and Donna Manning 13 10.

the day. On lawn 1 Nick Cram and Vince played a good game which Vince won 14 -12 playing several spectacular shots on the way. Donna and Ken played a game riddled with errors which Ken was lucky to win 11 – 6. Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days.

Lawn 2 saw some wild scoring by Alice Spittle and Ken Barker 21 who nished ahead of Wallace Roy and Janelle Wilson 4. Alice made a good four-break, unluckily half making a hoop to end her turn when she had the lawn set up. The moral of the story is … the further into the break the easier you can and are obliged to make your hoops. Nerves set in. Hoops magically become narrower and seem to grow teeth. The attached photo shows Alice approaching the seventh hoop (one back). Eight players turned out on Sunday. On lawn 2 Helen Andrews and Sarah played well to score 19 against Val Carbery and Stuart Craig 4, a score which included Helen’s “shot of
