Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter Rotary Offers Assistance in their 100 Year! th

We can all assume that COVID restrictions and procedures are generally here to stay. For quite some time, this may well be the “new normal”. Many clubs and organisations in Maleny are still thinking of holding an event of some kind, but nd it hard to commence the process. The stumbling blocks often are not knowing how to wade through and understand the complexity of COVID safe planning requirements. The Rotary Club of Maleny will be very busy celebrating their 100th year in 2021! But they are never too busy to help others and are offering to assist local volunteer organisations with advice, guidance or planning to help

clubs through the bureaucratic maze of local and state government permit requirements. The Rotary Club of Maleny now has some experience in assisting others get ready for their event, from detailed permit procedures, through to simple advice, or comment on their partially completed permits. Successful examples of guidance include Rotary Winter Blues Festival (Jul 20) Blackall Range Woodcraft Open Day (Oct 20) and the MACG Pop Up Fair (Nov 20). Rotary are not experts in the many COVID restriction required by each industry (your State body can help you with that information) but they can provide advice to steer

you to submitting a permit application that will result in approval for a COVID safe event for your members, and for the patrons attending. Rotary board member Rick Vickers took the opportunity at the recent MDSRC AGM to give a talk about Rotary's ability to provide this practical Covid assistance to Maleny’s many volunteer organisations. This is a great way of celebrating their 100th year of Rotary International - by doing what they do best - helping the community! Pattemore House will be open to the public again this coming Saturday (27th February) from 1 - 4 pm. Emily English, who spent ve years ensuring the property was placed on the Qld State Heritage Register said "My uncles who built Fairview (Pattemore House) told me this house would last forever”. See for yourself how a house was built by the four brothers in 1907, using the pit-saw method. You'll nd this and other interesting displays, short lms – and a lovely garden that the Friends of Pattemore House are restoring to its glory days. There are also delicious afternoon teas and home-made jams and pickles for sale. Plenty of parking, and disabled access. 15, Porters Lane, North Maleny. Support grows for SPEAK UP NOW “Stop Domestic and Family Violence” Members of SPEAK UP NOW have gladly accepted a cheque for $500 to support their Domestic and Family Violence awareness campaign in Maleny and the Blackall Range. The Presidents of the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club, the Maleny Men’s Shed and the Maleny Cultural and Historical Society and other representatives were on hand on 11th February at the Maleny Pioneer Village to hand over the cheque which was a result of their recent successful open day.

Targeted community forums have enabled community members to hear from specialist domestic and family violence services and associated professionals. Good news is that the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre has come on board and now has a representative on the Speak Up Now organising committee. What’s Next? An informal event targeted at hairdressers, beauticians and massage therapists is planned for Thursday 11 March 6-8pm at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. These personal service occupations are in a unique position to identify signs of domestic and family violence.

This was evidence of growing awareness and support for a whole community approach to domestic and family violence. It is said that it “takes a village to bring up a child”. Speak Up Now believes that it takes a village to tackle the scourge of domestic and family violence.

Contact Val on 0419 599 042 if you wish to attend or email:

These extra funds will enable the Speak Up Now group to continue their work on the Range. The main focus and actions so far have been to increase the visibility of emergency contact numbers for domestic and family violence services and resources.

combinedserviceclubsofmaleny@gmail.com. Further collaboration is planned with the Red Rose Foundation to add more red benches in Maleny as a reminder that domestic and family violence is not accepted in our community. Speak Up Now- Stop Domestic and Family Violence was formed in 2020 by members of the Zonta Club of the Blackall Range, the Quota Club of Maleny and the Rotary Club of Maleny. The River School Year 6 Shines a Light The Rotary Club of Maleny are very happy to report that the Year 6 River School class excelled themselves in their behaviour and enthusiastic participation in the Solar Light project on Sunday. Rotary’s Chris Brooker, project coordinator and Rotary President Greg Williams were very satis ed with the end result. Lots of lessons were learnt by everyone - and not just about solar light kits and the need for them in energy-poor countries. The importance of reading and following instructions, that it’s ok to ask for help, that perseverance wins out in the end (the screws were very tiny and it took a bit of dexterity to get them in right!). Many thanks to Trudi and the parents who attended. Seven Rotarians participated and all enjoyed communicating with the young people and seeing how happy they were to be involved in the project – and so proud particularly when they nished their rst kit. River School Principal Ann Donoghoe wrote to the club saying “Thank you so much for this wonderful feedback. The students returned to school very happy with the experience and enjoyed the company of members and the opportunity to work side-by-side doing something that will make a difference to those less fortunate.” Photo: Rotary President Greg Williams learning with the kids and parents

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny A group of young ladies who are all locals and friends of Alice Spittle enjoyed some hours on the lawns last Saturday afternoon. They are shown in the attached photo below. They played Aussie Croquet with 8 players at a time. Everyone had a great time, and will do it again soon. Thursday looked like rain. Only four players turned out and they were greeted by a heavy shower which lasted about ten minutes as they took to the lawn. Sustenance was called for, taken, the weather lifted and in the ensuing games Ken Barker was soundly beaten by Gillian Bradley going down 4 – 7, while Wallace Roy beat Janelle Wilson 9 -2.

Preparations for the Bray and Lochwood shields are in earnest now. On Sunday Wallace, 16 defeated Lynette Evans 7 in a practice match. Sarah Widin 20 finished ahead of Janelle 9 in an instructive match. On lawn 1 Val Carbery 17 defeated Vince Carbery 13 while Kath Smith played well in parts to score 9 hoops against Ken’s 15. Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days.

Let’s keep the country working by supporting Australian jobs. Buy Australian made and owned!

Please arrive at 2 pm for games to be arranged by 2.30. Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am For details contact Vince Carbery 54942193 (president), or Priscilla Vickers 54943555 (secretary). The club was formed in 1991and we did not have our own lawns until they were opened in 1993. There is also much information about the club on the web site below. https:// rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au Follow on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/ rangecroquetclub/?__tn__=HHH-R

Croquet is a very old game, widely known and practised in France under the name of 'jeu de mail'. Borrowed by the British around 1300, it was modi ed over the centuries: the Scots made golf out of it, the Irish turned it into croquet.
