The Maleny Boy on a Tractor Raising Funds for Charity Sunday morning saw something very special happening, as Maleny’s Sam Hughes, set off around Australia in his bright orange 50 year old Chamberlain tractor. Sam's plan is to spend the next year travelling and raising money for three charities that have personal meaning for him - the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Dolly’s Dream and Lights on the Hill Trucking Memorial. That’s an unusual enough way to spend your gap year, but his trusty tractor is also towing a trailer, custom-built to house a small car and store essentials, his tinny sits atop the tractor, a motorbike is

strapped securely to the tractor and atop the trailer sits the fuselage of an old Cessna plane. We are pretty sure no-one will miss his rig! The plane that doubles as sleeping quarters and more storage, will surely become a conversation starter about fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

was amazing having that many people come out,” he said. “It was a wonderful feeling.” Eyes shone with tears as the magnitude of his adventure was not lost by onlookers.

This smily faced 18 year old country lad has spent a year restoring his ‘P’plated tractor, and his trip is entirely self-funded. Sam was delighted to see how many locals came out to wave him farewell in Maple Street on Sunday morning, some with handmade orange placards held high! “It

Sam was stopped at the crossing outside IGA by locals who just wanted to shake his hand, wish him well, and say “Good Luck!” Local Patty Beecham thrust a delightful poem into his hands to remind him of Maleny. Sam is not sure how much he will raise, but has already attracted donations totalling $2000. “I just want to make as much as I can make and try not to annoy too many people,” he said. Sam will be taking the back roads as often as he can, travelling the Photo above + Left: Sam and Slim leave town for 12 months

Pit Sawn Pattemore House Open this Saturday

The Friends of Pattemore House welcome you to visit “Fairview” (Pattemore House) this Saturday 27th March between 1 and 4 pm.

Four brothers, Stan, Ernest, William and Albert Pattemore constructed the home, a sturdy farmhouse, from white beech timber in 1907 for their parents, Emily and JR Pattemore. The family came to Maleny in 1906 from Central Tilba, where Emily and JR operated both a butchery and a property called Myrtle Vale. They raised four sons and three daughters. According to family folklore the 1902 drought was so severe that the Pattemore family decided to move to a farming area with more reliable rainfall. Bill and Stan heard of the lush Blackall Range in Queensland, then being promoted for its dairying opportunities, and by 1906 were cutting timber there. In 1906 Bill began sawmilling at Maleny in partnership with Maleny fruitgrower ET Thynne, as Thynne and Pattemore. Bill and Stan were joined by their brothers Ernest and Albert in 1907 and together they built Fairview - the brothers pit-sawed the timber on the property, hand planed it, and made 6 inch tongue and groove boards with a single beading.
