Memorial Hospital
Started by the People, for the People. Maleny Memorial Hospital Celebrates a Century
Last Wednesday was a very special day indeed. The Maleny Soldier’s Memorial Hospital celebrated a Centenary on Wed 21 October. Due to space restrictions, a large crowd was not possible but lots of photos were taken to record the event and the century of care was also commemorated with the unveiling of a plaque.
hospital means that people can be treated for their medical issues here and don’t always have to travel down the mountain. Their loved ones can come in and see them, and we have an emergency department here too, which is so important for those urgent matters.”
The Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital was built by Paul Tesch of Witta, in 1919 in Bean Street, Maleny for 1,157 pounds on land purchased from Mr E F Watson. The hospital was opened on 1st August 1920. The hospital was extended several times over the years and served the community for 67 years, until a new hospital was built opposite and opened in 1987. The old hospital was demolished in early 1989 and a new Maleny Ambulance Station was constructed on the site. Hospital Auxiliary President Louise Hickey said “I think for the whole community it’s important to celebrate, because it’s something the community started back 100 years ago,” Mrs Hickey said. “It was started by the people, for the people. Very importantly, the
Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Adj Prof Naomi Dwyer said the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital was originally built as a memorial to those who took part in World War 1. “It was officially opened as a private hospital on 21 October 1920 and later gazetted as a general public hospital on 21 May 1921,” Prof Dwyer said. "As many of you know, the old building was removed, and the old site now houses Maleny Ambulance Station.”

The health service is celebrating not only the hospital’s 100th year in this area, but also acknowledges the commitment of the many staff and the important role they have played in helping improve the health of the local community. SCHHS Board Chair Dr Lorraine Ferguson AM said: “From its very humble beginnings being funded by subscription, the facility has grown to today being a leader in movement disorders. It is very clear to see that throughout the decades; Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital has strong support from this community. This is evidenced by the community’s willingness to fundraise. This enabled the community to provide healthcare to our war heroes free-of-charge. Today, this community continues to stand behind this hospital, raising thousands to support those in ill health. This community has every right to be proud of its history and the unique place it holds in our Sunshine Coast region. A wonderful reminder of the connection of the hospital’s history and connection to the town, is the beautiful Walk of Remembrance and in the hospitals very name.”

Maleny Precinct News Looking good after a drop of rain on the week-end, here’s a great shot (courtesy Penny Edwards) that takes in MDSRC’s lease, Maleny Sports Park, much of the Southern Wetlands on the Maleny Golf Course and two iconic and much loved fig trees. You can also see in the bottom right the ongoing works leading to the Barung Landcare lease, where an Environment Centre and Native Plant Nursery is planned. A tree plant was conducted by Barung last week, what perfect timing. Let’s hope there’s more rain on the way. It’s good to see the progress on Maleny Settlers Green, the row of rainforest shade trees is growing well, likewise the beds of native plants and grove of Heritage Camelias.

Designs for the children's play area are on the way for consideration and discussions are ongoing with Sunshine Coast Council regarding the installation of public toilets in the southern Precinct. Since the recent official opening up of the Unity Water Northern Wetland Trails, walkers and families can enjoy even more of the beautiful Maleny Community Precinct along the network of Precinct trails. There are great photo opportunities for birds, flora and fauna throughout the trails network and a friendly reminder – whilst dogs on-leash are welcome on the Precinct, please respect everyone’s right to relax and enjoy the beautiful surrounds by observing Council regulations for the health and safety of all – the entire Maleny Community Precinct is strictly dogs on-leash. Whilst most dog owners always do the right thing, it’s very disappointing that a few dog owners are leaving poo heaps for picnickers to sit on, walkers to tread in and volunteers to clean up, so we are appealing to everyone to do the right thing by bagging and removing any little doggie offerings!

The Parer Family in Maleny
Here is another part of Maleny’s history brought to you courtesy of the Maleny Historical Society
Dr Anthony 'Tony' Parer was Superintendent of the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital from 1931 to 1952 Continuing on with our series about the stories behind our landmarks and parks, hot on the heels of the Maleny Memorial Hospital celebrations, this week we talk about the little park in Bean Street opposite the Hospital, with its own heritage story. The Dr Tony Parer Park was constructed by the Caloundra City Council on the site of the original WWI Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital. It was officially opened on August 20, 2005 in honour of Dr Anthony “Tony” Parer, an outstanding rural doctor and the longest serving hospital superintendent at Maleny Hospital, from 1931 to 1952. A compassionate man who often rode on horseback many miles to tend to a sick patient prior to an efficient road system in the district, Dr Parer took an active role in public affairs and was a member of eleven local community organisations. More than 300 residents paid tribute to him at his farewell function held at the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall, Maleny on November 10, 1952.
he arrived up the hill for customers (including Catholics) to collect as he drove through town to the present site of the church at the top of Maple Street. The family were not left out of helping to keep the community healthy! When a young patient baulked at the mere thought of receiving an injection, Dr. Tony was known to use his children as guinea pigs to demonstrate that it didn’t hurt.
He was born in Melbourne in 1897, educated at the Christian Brothers in St Kilda and attended the Melbourne University. He graduated in medicine from the London University. He was the brother of the famous aviator Ray Parer and a cousin to the famous wartime photographer, Damien Parer. Dr. Tony Parer’s family was well respected in Maleny especially as Dr. Tony served as resident at the Maleny Hospital for 21 years until 1952. They lived next door to the Hospital which was where the Ambulance Station now stands. He delivered virtually all the children who were born in the district in that time, as he was the sole doctor in Maleny and the then developing areas of Caloundra, Landsborough, Conondale and Witta. His children, Judith, Michael(Mick) and Denise were educated at the ‘Top School’ until they left to attend boarding schools in Brisbane. Judith and Denise both followed their father’s footsteps in the medical profession training as nursing sisters at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane. Michael became RAAF Wing Commander, leading the renowned 1960’s ‘Black Diamonds’ aerobatic team of Sabre jets which flew many demonstration flights around Australia. In the family tradition, he followed his aviator Uncle, Ray Parer, who slowly flew his de Havilland ‘PD’ in the air race from England to Australia in 1920. Tony and Peg Parer were stalwarts of the Maleny community, raising money for the financing of the Community Hall and developing healthy diets among the residents. This included collecting fish during his Friday medical rounds in Caloundra, blowing the horn as Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club Inc
The Parer Family also played host to the myriad of cousins visiting from Brisbane for a trip to the country, many of these events were recorded by his cousin Damien Parer, during his visits to Maleny during the war, where he caught up with his sister, Doreen Owen and family. Dr Parer died in 1971, aged 74 years of age. With thanks as always to the Maleny Historical Society for this article. Photo Above: Dr Tony Parer https://malenysportandrec.org.au/

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny This Thursday the lawns were busy again despite the threat of rain. Nick Cram 17 played some brilliant croquet to beat Ken Barker and Kath Smith 7. Alice Spittle and Bev Sockhill played well but were beaten by Priscilla Vickers and Wallace Roy 7 –9. Vince and Val Carbery 15 beat Miggy Mackey and Sarah Widin13 in a good game. The rain stayed away, and it was an enjoyable day. Thanks to Donna for forgoing play to coach. Photo: The position shown in the attached photograph occurs frequently. Nick has come across the lawn to green with pink, is using it to take off to brown, preferably on the boundary side
to rush it closer to hoop 1; then will use brown to make that hoop with pink. Many players practice this opening as part of their tactical preparation for a game. Rain and storms threatened again on Sunday. Despite this, a hardy group consisting of Janelle Wilson, Lynette Evans, Stuart Craig, Vince, Val, Nick, Donna and Priscilla waited out the rain rewarded, eventually, by good playing conditions. Janelle and Lynette teamed up to beat Stuart and Priscilla 4 –2 while Val and Nick 10 finished ahead of Donna and Vince 6. From the 1st October we will be meeting at 2pm for a 2.30 start for all social play games i.e. Thursdays and Sundays. Coaching will still be from8am – 10am on Saturday mornings until further notice
Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days. Please arrive at 2 pm for games to be arranged by 2.30.
