Miss Roberts Came to Maleny as a school teacher. She was a city girl coming to the country and taught at the Curramore State School. She married a Maleny farmer and lived a very happy life in the Maleny District with Bill, her husband who passed away in the late 1990’s. Miss Roberts is better known to us today as Mrs. Beryl Newton. Beryl passes away peacefully on January 1st, 2015 aged 101 years. Back in 2015 “Miss Roberts” told us a bit about what it was like as a country school teacher.

ifty odd years ago the district around Maleny was largely a dairy farming area. Homes were much further apart than they are today. Nowadays with the land being sub-divided those dairy farms are disappearing. Consequently, the number of school children in the district fluctuates as they grow older and leave school then leave the district to find employment or go to Brisbane for higher education as at that time there was no high school in Maleny.
so we had to find someone who could combine it with his own business. No-one in our district had or could afford to buy a bus large enough to transport all the children. Once the service was established, any school-aged child could be picked up, irrespective of the distance, and we were not going to leave behind any pupils who lived only 2.99 miles from the school. Then “happy day” Bert Brooker happened.
Unless a small district was very lucky there came a time when it was no longer viable to keep a one-teacher school open for a few pupils. Within a year of my resigning as a teacher Curramore school closed. The school building was shifted to Elamon Creek where it continued to be used as a school building for a few further years. The building is now used as a scout den at Kenilworth. Following the closure of the school the Education Department supplied a school bus - “OF SORTS”. Government bus payments did not bring a living wage by itself, http://www.hinterlandgrapevine.com
and Saturday during summer. On the cream pick up days, Bert would load the kids and cream into the truck from the "far end" and come in to the junction of Curramore Road. The kids would help him unload the cream and put it under a tree. That tree is still there today, near the north eastern corner of Nothling's farm. Bert would then load the seats on, the back on the truck and off they'd go to the school. Bert would come back after, unload the seats, load the cream and finish the cream run. We didn't have a refrigerator but an ice chest so ice would be delivered by the cream truck. Mail and papers also came on the school bus.

Bert lived in Maleny, ran his own soft-drink factory, and owned a bus. True it was a “cream bus” and he collected our cream. The bus was actually a three ton International truck. Miss Roberts is better known to us today as Mrs. Beryl Newton. Beryl passes away peacefully on January 1st, 2015 aged 101 years. Back in 2015 “Miss Roberts” told us a bit about what it was like as a country school teacher. One Friday afternoon many years after Bert had stopped doing the school bus run and school busses had been upgraded he was in the bar of the Maleny hotel. He was speaking to a couple of local school teachers. Talk got around to the abolition of the cane and corporal punishment. Bert told a story about one afternoon on the bus. One of the boys (We'll call him Pete - not his real name as he still lives in town) was playing up in the back so Bert put him in the front seat. The kid gave a bit more cheek, so Bert stopped the truck, pulled a branch off a small tree and gave the kid a belting. They got back in the truck and the kid said "You're a bastard Bert" so Bert gave him a backhander which stopped all argument. The school teachers were a bit shocked at this and started sprouting about violence toward children, how it retarded development, and not the proper thing to do. Slowly Bert looked over at a male person who was also sitting in the bar nearby and said, "didn't affect you at all did it Pete ? " http://www.hinterlandgrapevine.com
Pete just grinned and replied, "Noooo Bert" . . .end of discussion. Some time later Bert was driving the children to school when he noticed the back of the bus (truck) rocking up and down. Thinking he had a flat tyre he got out and checked each tyre, but all appeared in order. Bert got back into the truck and started off again. Within a short time the truck again started rocking. Again Bert stopped and got out and checked each wheel. He could find nothing wrong. Photo Above: Bert Brooker later in life.
The students said to Bert, "What is wrong Mr Brooker?.” He said, "The truck is rocking and I thought we had a flat tyre.” Every student got out and walked around the truck - scratching their heads and acting as innocent as only a young student can. One student said, "I can't see anything wrong Mr. Brooker.
Everyone got back into the truck and off they went again. Between Curramore and the school this scene was repeated several more times, each time a check being made of the truck and the wheels. It is thought that Bert never knew the cause but he would not have been too happy if he had caught sight of the students in the back of the truck holding hands and jumping up and down making the truck rock from side to side. From this one may ask, "Who won the battle - Bert or Pete? “Bert was well respected and liked by all the students who used that "school bus " to get to school. Take a look at today’s school busses and think of what they were in Bert Brooker’s day there is a great improvement. There are many people still living in our town who travelled in those early school busses to and from school. They all have special stories about those early days. They all were relieved that they no longer had to ride their bikes to school. Shop Locally & Shop with a Friend 4

OFF LEASH DOG AREAS – MALENY. Council officers advise that the Maleny Show-ground is a designated Off Leash Dog Area. Whilst this is the actual situation, there are however a number of uses on the show-ground which are not compatible with such a designation. For instance there are areas reserved for sports such as croquet, cricket and soccer, as well as other areas used for horse sports and camping. Unfortunately some dog owners fail to respect these incompatible uses and also fail to pick up their animals faeces. Consequently this situation is totally unacceptable to those sporting bodies and to campers. In addition dogs and horses do not mix well and apart from the obvious danger to all parties, there is a biosecurity problem. Cr Winston Johnston said, “Consequently, I am pleading for dog owners to not use any of the sporting fields and only use the horse paddock when there are no horses. Also I am pleading with dog owners to pick up their dogs droppings” . Doggy-do bags are conveniently located at six different locations at the show-grounds. A DEDICATED DOG WALKING PARK. Coast Drivers cop $130,000 in fines for using mobile phones whilst driving! Sunshine Coast drivers have copped more than $130,000 worth of fines for using their mobile phones while behind the wheel. Since February, drivers face a one-thousand-dollar fine if caught holding their mobile phone while driving. New statistics from the Department of Transport show 134 people were fined between February and April. Senior Sergeant Shane Panoho says those breaking the law are easy to spot. "When the lights have actually changed green and there's a delay in the vehicle moving forward, we have been able to intercept that vehicle," he said. The figures show three people on the Sunshine Coast have each been fined $1000 for using a mobile phone while riding a bicycle. Senior Sgt Panoho says riders, like drivers, are putting lives at risk. "It doesn't take Einstein to work out the fact that if you're going to take activity like that while riding a bike, you're exposing yourself to danger," he said. He said a trial of cameras that detect mobile phone use will include the Sunshine Coast.

All Paints Are Not Created The Same A coat of paint can really transform the look of any room, floor, doors or deck, and it doest cost you a small fortune to get a new look from some ageing items in your home.
smoother finish. So it does a better job at covering up those small imperfections that come with time. With a lower grade paint, you may need 3-4 and sometimes even 5 coats to get the same effect as you would with the more expensive paint.
But when you see paint on the market ranging from $8 a litre all the way to $20 or more, it starts to raise questions. Are those more expensive paints REALLY worth the money?
When applied by paintbrush, cheaper paints show brush marks and provide poor coverage due to the thin layers they create. Higher-quality paints provide smooth, onecoat coverage. This will save you a lot of time, and also mean less usage.
One factor that you need to consider, is the type of paint. Oil based paint or water based paint. Oil paints are great for durability and provide a really smooth coat. But they are also a lot harder to clean up. Water based paints on the other hand have come a long way with the improved chemistry behind them, and can be cleaned with water.
You may only need 4 litres of a high quality paint, as compared to 12-16 litres of the lower grade to cover the same area with multiple coats. Another big difference is in durability. The more expensive paints are also more washable and offer greater scrub resistance. If you try washing dirt off a cheaper paint, you're likely to wash off some of the paint itself.
Another deciding factor in the higher grade, higher priced paints, is application. The higher grade paints contain a titanium in the mix, which gives the paint more coverage and a

A Handy Painter’s Tip
“Cutting. In” You'll get better results if you cut in just one wall, then immediately roll out the wall before cutting in the next one. That's because if you roll out the wall right away, while the cut-in paint is still wet, the cut-in paint and the wall paint will blend much better, reducing the chance of lap marks. Would you donate a dollar to charity? The Royal Australian Mint has unveiled its latest new coin. It will be commonly be known as the Donation Dollar, a $1 coin. It is not designed to be put into that “piggy bank” and saved for a rainy day. It is designed to be donated to charity. 57 per cent of Australians said they would do exactly that if they found one in their coin purse or wallet. Three million coins have already been released into circulation. Each of the coins feature a green centre with a gold ripple design. The hidden meaning behind the design is it is intended to act as a symbol of the ongoing impact each donation makes to those who need it most. The distinctive look of this new coin should prompt people to think of those in need. Royal Australian Mint CEO Ross MacDiarmid said that the cycle of a Donation Dollar is on-going, the proposal should tap into Australians’ “spirit of generosity”. Shop Locally & Shop with a Friend 11

Father’s
Day
Many Australians observe Father’s Day on the first Sunday of September. It is a day for people to show their appreciation for fathers and father figures. Father figures may include stepfathers, fathers-in-law, guardians (eg. foster parents), and family friends. The custom of the September date began in the mid 1930s. “The imprint of a father remains forever on the life of the child.”

Whilst the Sunshine Coast Council have been trying to work a way around this but the Chamber found that it can't host the event as it normally runs. “We had some great plans for this event with some new ideas but we will have to wait until 2021 to see them.” said Chamber President, Nicole. The good news is that the Chamber is sourcing from the council the covid plan for events with under 500 people. With this the Chamber hopes to help our local clubs and organisations to put on covid friendly events that can still see celebrations and much needed fund raising. “We will work with any organisation that wants to give it a go.” said Nicole. http://www.hinterlandgrapevine.com
however, due to the limitations on the numbers they can have at any screening there will be a limited number of tickets to sell. The Maleny Visitor Centre will have about 30 tickets to sell for each screening ie matinee and evening on behalf of the Film Society. The Maleny Film Society will be operating under strict Covid 19 protocols in respect of maximum numbers and would be subject to hefty fines if these conditions are not met. Senior Citizen celebrates 90th birthday Laughter is clearly the secret to longevity at the Maleny Senior Citizens. Local M.P. Andrew Powell joined members of the Maleny Senior Citizens Club who were celebrating the 70, 80 and 90 Birthdays of a number of their members. The photo above shows Club President Lynda Burgess and nonagenarian Mrs Ronnie Wildman. There was some debate over when she actually turned 90...hence the laughters Maleny Senior Citizens meet in the Verandah Room of the Maleny Community
Centre.
Maleny Senior Citizens are always welcoming to new members. For more information contact President Lynda Burgess by email: lyndab@netaccess.com.au
Maleny Dairies wins Again!
Maleny Dairies were thrilled to be announced as winners of the 2020 Gold Medal for their REAL CREAM. A message from the judging panel: “I thank our State Winners who did everything they could to get their award-winning produce to our Sydney-based judges: Neil Perry, Matt Moran, Peter Gilmore, Danielle Alvarez, Colin Fassnidge and Guillaume Brahimi to judge solo in isolation. For many producers, this year has been tougher than ever, following drought, bushfires and flood, then scaling back production due to Covid-19. It has never been a more important time to support our producers. The produce they delivered during a time of unprecedented change showed just how hard Australian farmers, fishermen and artisans work at their craft.”
Something to do on a lazy Sunday One of the great things about living so close to Brisbane would have to be the ability to access some of the walks around the city. A simple train ride from Landsborough or Caboolture will get you right into the centre of the city and from there i is easy to access public transport, either buses or river cats to get to The Brisbane Riverwalk.
There is the the odd rest shelter along the way (with seating), but take a hat and some water. This permanent fixture was built to replace Brisbane's first floating riverwalk - a visionary yet doomed project that was all but swept away in the 2011 floods, when it was shown to be no match for the might of a swollen raging Brisbane River.
It is a perfect leisurely walk for pedestrians. It juts out into part of the most scenic tract of Brisbane river between New Farm to the Howard St Wharves and on to the Brisbane CBD. Take the river cat from Brisbane’s CBD (Riverside City Cat terminal) to New Farm’s Sydney St terminal then turn left onto Griffith St and walk the block to Riverview Ct/Merthyr Rd and take the riverwalk back to the CBD. http://www.hinterlandgrapevine.com

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE THREE LEVELS OF BUSHFIRE WARNINGS MEAN? Last bushfire season was one of the worst ever. Make sure you're prepared this season. As part of our bushfire awareness series, we spoke with area director of the Caloundra Rural Fire Service, Matt Inwood, to give us a practical overview of bushfire warnings and how best to stay up to date during bushfire season.
ARE YOU READY FOR STORM SEASON Don't wait till it's too late - Be Storm Safe The State Emergency Service (SES) is the lead response agency for floods, storms and tsunamis across Queensland. Functions of the SES include helping to ensure that communities throughout the state are adequately prepared to reduce the impact of these events. Assisting communities prepare for these events can reduce the damage, loss and costs associated with floods, storms and tsunamis.
All residents should be prepared for bushfire, but if you answer yes to any of these four questions, you are likely to be at a heightened risk. • • • •
Do you live within a few kilometres of bushland? Does your local area have a bushfire history? Do you have trees and shrubs within 20 metres of your house? Is your home built on a slope?
To reduce your risk factor - “Will firefighters - if they are available - be able to gain safe access and do you have adequate water to fight a fire?” Dot leave preparations to the last minute!
The protection of life is the priority for the SES in these events. During storms, it is important to protect your family and home from the major impacts such as high winds, lightning, hail and potential flash flooding. During an emergency or disaster, calls to this number, mentioned right increase significantly therefore it could take hours and even days before the SES are able to come to you. If you can help yourself then they have more time to assist vulnerable members of the community. Be PreparedCheck that your insurance policy is current and adequate. Make a home emergency plan and have an emergency kit prepared. Secure or put away items around your home and balcony that could blow around in strong winds and cause damage. Items such as potted plants, garbage bins, animal food bowls, gardening tools and trampolines can become dangerous missiles in strong winds.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts In this year of COVID-19 let us hope that as a country we have learnt something. There is one thing for sure and that is that there will be more pandemics such as this one in the not too far distant future. As a country we cannot financially stand the terrible financial and social crippling that we have seen with COVID-19. Much of the damage was done by inconsistent information and decisions that were mistimed or just wrong. Many of those mistakes were brought about by too many sources of information and a blurring of the lines of responsibilities of various levels of government.
Vietnam Veterans Day Maleny 2020
On 18 August each year, we commemorate Vietnam Veterans' Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. We remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to those who served during the 10 years of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. By the time the war had come to an end, almost 60,000 Australians served during a decade of conflict between 1962 and 1972. Tragically, 521 of them died and 3000 were wounded. Members of Maleny R.S.L. Chris, Ivan, Roly and Cal remembered those who “fell”.
It is too easy for the various levels of g government to “pass the buck” when things go wrong, but take all the credit when they go right. Australia is too over regulated and bureaucratic top heavy. Surely it is time to have a good think about how many levels of government are really necessary to ensure proper governmental control. Is it really necessary to have all three levels that we presently have. Could some responsibilities be changes so that one level is responsible for everything in certain areas. Not only would this create a more certain direction of decisions, but would also allow for the removal of duplication and the narrowing of bureaucratic B.S. This bureaucratic mess is costing the average Aussie taxpayer heavily. I am sure that few of us would feel that the money-grab by our tripleheaded government could not be reduced.
For the first time ever, a million Australians are out of work.
Do we really need state governments, with their bureaucracies and their armies of highly paid consultants and their legions of spin doctors. Are state governments really giving us value for our money? More importantly, can we really afford them?
Although many are still looking for work, the challenges our small businesses are facing to keep their doors open and staff employed are significant, and not easily overcome.
To the average Aussie state governments have become hopelessly entangled in party politics?
If you are able, please support a small business when looking for goods and services - you're likely helping them keep their doors open and staff on board.
This is a conversation we, as a community need to have.
And we need to ensure they'll still be around on the other side of this crisis, to help us all recover.

Sustainable Living & Gardens With Grahame Staines
Sustainable Living & Aquaponics Grahame Staines and his family lives on a 25 acres property in Maleny, Queensland Australia. The home is approximate one hours drive north of Brisbane. Although it's a large block the garden footprint is no bigger than a suburban house yard. The property has limited water, unlimited cow manure and plenty of clay soil. I was first introduced to Aquaponics by my son and my initial response to his suggestion to install a system was a definite NO. However as it would appear, I lost the argument and that was six years ago.

The ability for me to harvest organic vegetables from raised beds easily and grab an organic fish once a week to eat is not only simplistic, but really confirms my belief that we should all grow our own food at home.
Very simply, aquaponics combines aquaculture and hydroponics together to create a beautiful ecological mutualism where fish create a nutrient rich water source for plants, and in turn, the plants clean and purify the water for the fish. While I had the odd vegetable garden and fruit tree scattered around my property, it didn’t quite feel like I would ever get

THIS Weeks JOKE A man was stranded on a desert island for 10 years. One day a beautiful girl swims to shore in a wet suit. Man: "Hi! Am I ever happy to see you!” Girl: "Hi! It seems like you've been here a long time. How long has it been since you've had a cigarette?” Man: "It's been ten years!” With this information the girl unzips a slot on the arm of her wet suit and gives the man cigarette. Man: "Oh, thank you so much!” Girl: "So tell me how long it’s been since you had a drink?”
Man: "It's been ten years” The girl unzips a little longer zipper on her wet suit and comes out with a flask of whiskey and gives the man a drink. Man: "Oh, thank you so much. You are like a miracle"! Finally the girl starts to unzip the front of her wet suit and asks the man leadingly, "So tell me then, how long has it been since you played around??” The man looked at her and said excitedly: "Oh, my God, don't tell me you've got a set of golf clubs in there too?”
Did You Know Queensland’s Official colour is Maroon
THE COLOUR MAROON for Queensland stemmed from Queen Victoria who had a special association with colour generally, and a special affinity for the colour maroon. The Royal Rooms at her home on the Isle of Wight, Osborne House, were painted in what was to become known as “Osborne maroon”. Queen Victoria herself instituted the Royal Train and had the carriages painted a distinctive maroon with a grey roof. The second postage stamp issued in her reign was maroon (the “Penny Red’). The doors and panels of the Royal Mail coaches were also painted maroon. For the colour of the riband of the Victoria Cross, the Queen chose a maroon colour , which some have speculated symbolised the shedding of blood in the service of others. She bestowed the same maroon colour (formally
http://www.hinterlandgrapevine.com
“dull cherry’) as the Regimental colour of the Royal Army Medical Corps which she founded in May 1898.
It was subsumed as the Corps colour of the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps. Throughout the last decades of the nineteenth century, a number of Queensland institutions adopted the colour maroon, it is speculated because it was the Queen’s favourite colour. In 1895, the Queensland Rugby Union team changed their livery from Oxford Blue to “a deep red or maroon jersey”. The Queensland Rugby League team wore maroon jerseys from 1908. Queensland’s first non-heraldic emblem is the Cooktown Orchid, Vappodes bigibba, chosen because of its distinctive maroon flower. It was proclaimed as the State Flower in 1959 to mark the State’s Centenary.
The colour maroon was incorporated into the new (2001) Queensland State tartan, “the colour being symbolic of the maroon of the Queensland floral emblem, the Cooktown Orchid”. In 2003, the State member for Indooroopilly, Mr. Ronan Lee (ALP, later Greens), began advocating in Queensland’s Legislative Assembly for the proclamation of maroon as the State Colour. The Queensland Governor of the day, Her Excellency Quentin Bryce, proclaimed that maroon was the State Colour on 13 November 2003. The two most identifiable symbols of Queensland and Queenslanders are the colour maroon and the Maltese Cross. They span origins of identity across a thousand years, brought together by the preference of a queen, and Queenslanders’ wish to associate this preference with their State which bears Her name.

Prior to Maleny Library (Same Building)
Who would believe that this is the same building in which the newly renovated Maleny Library now sits. It began life at Maleny Fruit Barn and was built by the Tedman family who operated the business for a number of years. What a change a few bits of material and a coat of paint makes. This photo was taken in 1997.
