Around Division 5 with Cr Winston Johnston Your waste turns to electricity!
The Sunshine Coast Council is now converting waste to electricity at its Caloundra Renewable Energy Facility.
In a first for the region, the facility at 99 Pierce Ave, Bells Creek creates enough energy to power 1200 homes 24-hours a day, seven days a week. The facility was officially opened on the 24th November 2020. The facility is linked to the power grid, and generates 7000 megawatt hours of renewable electricity per annum, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 41,000 tonnes each year, which is the equivalent to removing approximately 9000 cars from the road. Our general rubbish disposed of at the landfill releases biogas as it decomposes, which is made up of 50 per cent methane – a potent greenhouse gas 28 times more harmful than carbon dioxide Previously, the landfill biogas was combusted via a biogas flare and released into the atmosphere. This scheme reduces greenhouse gas emissions from the landfill by approximately 41,000 tonnes each year. With this scheme for every tonne of waste deposited at the Caloundra landfill, there are no net greenhouse gas emissions.

Track our Flying Foxes As the weather warms up and more flying-foxes arrive on the Sunshine Coast, council has called on the community to help track the animals’ movements and feeding habits by joining the citizen science project Bats in Backyard Council’s long-term goal is to identify highly suitable low-conflict areas to encourage flying-foxes to roost in long-term. Identifying where they are already feeding and what they are feeding on, we can get closer to finding suitable low-conflict areas and making sure there is suitable food there to encourage flying-foxes to stay long-term. Covid restrictions ended just in time for about 70 volunteers from the Maleny Visitors Information Centre to “kick up their heels” for once in 2020 at their Christmas get together at the Maleny RSL Hall on December 2nd. Fun and frivolity were the orders of the day and for once they were not telling others “where to go”.
All members were most interested to learn about some of the serious attributes of elephants from an
elephant expert and also about the banana slug. It is most interesting just how things work in nature.
Next year will be a brighter year with a lot less stress for everyone and that will be enjoyable.
As there was no Santa present there was no-one sitting on knees and all COVID safety precautions were take. MIC Volunteers wish you all a Marry Christmas and a safeChristmas break.

Adam Scott, the world’s number 6-ranked golfer, launched Maleny’s golf course onto a global stage last Friday using his Instagram profile to live broadcast a 9-hole match-play round with good friend and club promanager Wayne Perske. Billed as “Nine Holes with a Mate” Adam, 39, joked, chatted about strategy and answered questions posted on-line while riding solo in a cart during the 80-minute social media event viewed by thousands of fans around the world.

Inside hot cars not for “child minding” Leaving small children inside cars alone is not a child care option. Children are particularly at risk because they can lose fluid quickly, become dehydrated and suffer from heatstroke. The latest death of a child left inside of a car in Cairns shows just how dangerous it is. The RACQ said that tests showed there is no safe situation in which to leave children unattended in a vehicle as car interiors can reach up to 75 degrees on a typically Brisbane day of 32.5 degrees. The RACQ spokesperson also said, “Tinted windows, a sunshade, or even the windows slightly open, fails to reduce the cabin temperature by a significant amount. On a hot day, a car parked in direct sunlight may reach temperatures that are dangerous to a child in less than one hour.

100g pkt plum paste 8 whole star anise 125ml (1/2 cup) fresh orange juice, strained 125ml (1/2 cup) maple syrup 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 7-8kg whole leg ham, on the bone 6-8 small apples

The ham can be glazed and cooked the night before. Allow to cool then store in the fridge (as below). To store leftover ham, lay the rind over the glazed section, cover with a damp tea towel and store in the fridge in a ham bag or pillowcase. Simply Enjoy!
Sticky apple and plum-glazed ham Step 1 Preheat oven to 170C/150C fan forced. Place an oven shelf in the lowest position, removing other shelves. Line a large roasting pan with baking paper. Place a wire rack on top and pour enough water into pan until just under the rack but not touching. Step 2 Place the plum paste, star anise, orange juice, maple syrup and Dijon in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until paste has dissolved. Bring to the boil then simmer, stirring occasionally, for 8-10 minutes or until syrupy. Transfer to a heatproof bowl and set aside to cool and thicken Step 3 Use a sharp knife to cut around the ham shank, about 10cm from end. Run knife around the edge of the ham. Gently lift the rind off in 1 piece by running your fingers between the rind and the fat. Step 4 Use a mandoline to thinly slice the apples crossways. . Brush the top of the ham with a little glaze. Place the apple slices on top, slightly overlapping. Use toothpicks to secure, where necessary. Arrange star anise randomly over apple slices. Step 5 Transfer the ham to prepared wire rack in pan. Wrap the shank in foil. Brush one-third of the remaining glaze over apples. Bake for 40 minutes. Brush again with half of the remaining glaze and bake for a further 40 minutes. Carefully remove the toothpicks. Step 6 Brush the ham with half the remaining glaze and bake for 20 minutes. Brush with the remaining glaze and bake for a further 20 minutes or until the apples are golden and sticky. Set aside for 30 minutes to rest before slicing to serve.

Collard’s Curse
How Kikuyu Grass was Introduced to the Range
Here’s another interesting article from the archives of the Maleny Historical Society. "The effects of drought on the stock-sustaining capacity of the softer grasses were most marked and the toll of the 1919 drought were long remembered. Immediately following this drought, the late Alfred Collard introduced kikuyu grass (pennisetum clandestinum) a native of South Africa. It was from the original planting in Australia at the Wollingbar Experiment Farm. He brought 8 runners of Kikuyu grass with him and thus began Maleny’s and the Dairy Industry’s long association with what became known by those with gardens or cultivations the doubtful distinction of being called “Collard’s Curse” – through its habit of over-running
cultivation areas, which suited it ideally on account of the looser soil.
However it helped the farmers survive many a dry period. Its popularity spread and eventually displaced the the cultivation of cow cane for winter feeding, on account of its thick coverage, and it greatly reduced the incidence of losses via drought, through its blanketing effect on the surface of the ground and the amount of roughage it provides. As the farms became more established, the surface stone, mainly of basaltic origin, was gathered to allow for more intensive pasture management, and the working of renovation implements over the pastures which became ‘root-bound”

Fred Porter recorded that sugar cane was the fi rst crop planted on the range, “bullock fodder” as it was called by Francis Dunlop. Then Buffalo couch grass was introduced. Paspalum arrived about 1903 and Rhodes grass soon after. There

The mixture consisted of mainly Rye grasses, Cocksfoot, white Dutch clover, and red clover to provide summer grazing. Liming corrected the high acidity of the soil to some extent and led to better growth. An increasing interest is being taken in the application of lime and artificial fertilisers and it may well become an accepted part of normal farm practice.”

The Howard tractor (also pictured) belonged to Gerald Thomasson, and is believed to be one of the first tractors on the Maleny Range. Farmers used to plant winter crops for their farm animals, but after kikuyu was introduced, horse teams found it difficult to plough. This tractor is on display as part of their collection at the Maleny Historical Village.

Police News ATM Crime Spree Sunshine Coast Detectives from the Nambour Criminal Investigation Branch have charged two men alleged to have been involved in the theft of thousands of dollars from Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) located at recycling plants across the state’s south east. On June 6 where two offenders allegedly used cutting tools to force open an ATM at the location. The pair then fled with more than $20,000 in cash. The pair were located on the Bruce Highway, Glass House Mountains. They were located with several sets of “Jaws of Life” equipment previously stolen from a business atParkinson. A bit of a look back into the past with this photo from 1959 at the Wooloowin State School. Policeman in the photo is Sgt. Bill English with Constable Dangerfield in the background. They travelled around Brisbane schools carrying out Road Safety lessons. Both Sergeant English and Constable Dangerfield became house-hold names from the point of school road safety lessons and many people today would still remember those lessons. Sgt English would also be known as the “Whistling Cop” working the Fortitude Valley Five ways traffic point beside Senior Constable Dickie Daniels. Public Astronomy Night at Maleny Golf Club! The Brisbane Astronomical Society is delighted to once more offer a public stargazing night on Saturday 12th December at the Maleny Golf Club. Be there promptly by sunset (6:30) for the laser guided tours and satellite spotting – then it’s onto telescope viewing through the largest public accessible telescopes in South East Queensland. This will be a moonless night, concentrating on deep sky objects only visible on these nights. Weather permitting, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune will all be on view. No knowledge or equipment is necessary, just bring your curiosity. All ages and abilities are welcome! The public session will conclude at 9.00 pm. Organisers ask that all attendees park on the road and walk in, as car lights will impair the night vision essential for these Dark Sky events. Sorry, but no pets as they are a tripping hazard in the night. Donations are appreciated but not compulsory. We suggest $5 per person or $10 per family. All proceeds go to expenses incurred running these nights. Members of the Brisbane Astronomical Society and/or the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance are free. An Old Codger’s Thoughts
The Wages of War Australians send their “sons and daughters” to war to fight battles on their behalf. Many of those send do not have the opportunity to decide “yes of no” to having to go - they are just sent on “our” mission. Furthermore, most of them have been on repetitive 3 to 6 month deployment cycles, with no time in between to rest and reset back to “normalcy,” before being sent on yet another deployment to clock up many more kills. War is a “dirty” business and now “we armchair critics” for our own personal motives want to oversee those who have actually been sent to carry out our business. Death happens in war and often it is about“ kill or be killed”. There is a large difference between “war crimes and regretful incidents” that happen during the heat of the battle. Don’t be too quick to make decisions about we are being fed in the daily news about the actions of some Australian soldiers - you weren’t there. Already from the comfort of their western privileged lounge rooms, journalists, politicians and lawyers are presently wanting to hold to account men who had to make life and death decisions in the blink of an eye, and nobody to give any advice about the situation as it was then was. Already I can see you rolling your eyes and saying “why does he want to protect murderers?”

THE Wildlife Volunteers Association Inc has been in operation for more than 25 years, helping injured and orphaned wildlife. Join Wilvos as a carer, transporter or hotline volunteer. Volunteers work from home, making a BIG difference for our little Aussie mates. Presently there are about 300 members whoall have a passion and desire to assist our native animals in need, but more are needed to provide the 24 hour a day - 7 day a week service.. Wilvos will also provide free, educational talks to groups, schools and retirement villages on the Sunshine Coast. As I previously said; War is messy. Death happens there. Soldiers kill people. Being killed hurts. Governments send them to war to kill people. Australians, including you vote for those governments and expect them to carry out what is best for Australia. Perhaps those who now want to have their “bobs worth” in attacking the Australian soldiers who made very serious decisions on all our behalf should be conscripted for a reality check. Remember those soldiers who returned from tours of duty in Vietnam only to have university students, union members and some others to protest about those soldiers - they could not have help having to carry out their duties any more than the soldiers committed to Afghanistan. All these soldiers are and were people just doing what you and I asked of them, no more and no less. Maleny Park Run
Each November the ZONTA Club of Blackall Range assembles 'refuge packs' made up of essential toiletries and other products to be distributed to local Sunshine Coast refuges for women escaping domestic violence.
The Maleny ParkRun is on on Saturday 19th December 2020 between 6.45am and 8.30a.m. Its free for all registered ParkRun participants
When they leave their premises who often leave with only the clothes they are wearing. The club's VicePresident and Service and Fundraising Chair, June Robson recently delivered these packs, Christmas presents and bags of toilet paper rolls to refuge houses: Sunshine Sanctuary and Kyabra Community Association. This follows the recent “Zonta says NO to domestic violence” walk in which many members took part! This walk led into the campaign of 16 days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence which runs between November 25th and December 10th. Both men and women can experience substantial levels of violence Representatives from Sunshine Sanctuary and Kyabra Community Association wish to pass on their appreciation and gratitude to the club. The Zonta Club of the Blackall Range wish to thank all the members and non-members who donated items toward the refuge packs.

Ruddle’s Bulk Milk Tank Pictured is Queensland’s first bulk milk tank, owned by Phil Ruddle of Reesville. Made of stainless steel, it held 400 gallons of milk, or 1,514L. In 1960 The Maleny Co-Operative Dairy Assn Factory started producing casein and 80 of the district’s 280 farmers produced milk for casein production.
The tank is displayed next to Lawley House at the Pioneer Village.
Production ceased in 1978 when the Maleny Factory amalgamated with the Caboolture Dairy Co-op. The tank was damaged when it fell off the back of Ruddle’s truck and into their dam – it was full of milk!

The Maleny Historical Society provided this photo taken on the 23 November 1913 when the first motor car came to Maleny. It was a Cadillic V8 driven by
Charlie Edlundt, son of the Caloundra Lighthouse Keeper. The car was owned by Mrs Norman Williamson. It was taken outside Sallaway's Boarding House, now 37 Maple Street. The boarding house was demolished C1950 and 3 shops were built. This is where the Co-op store is and where Colin James' was. Passengers were Charlie Edlundt in driving seat, Billy King next. Effie Sallaway, Trinkner, Bell Clark, Andy McLean, Mr Harding standing. Bates and Sallaway children standing at Bate’s gate.

Maleny Aussie Day Expo 2021 Cancelled
The Covid situation whilst easing in Qld, is still impacting on community events both large and small. Here is the latest update from the Chairman of the Expo Committee, Rick Vickers, regards the cancellation of the popular Hinterland Aussie Day Expo that so many community groups participate in on Australia Day at the Showgrounds each year, "We regret to advise that, despite our best efforts in planning the activities and detailing the many procedures required, the Hinterland Aussie Day Expo will be cancelled for 2021. Despite some hard work in planning and taking advice and suggestions from Sunshine Coast Council, Queensland Health, Maleny Show Society and staff from TS CENTAUR, we have found that the procedures and restrictions to be imposed due to COVID 19 would be too much of a burden to conduct the three hour Expo event. However, for those wishing to still do something on Australia Day in Maleny, I understand the APEX Big Breakfast is still being planned at the Showgrounds, as is the Australian Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony at TS CENTAUR. You should contact both those organisations if you wish to attend as individual citizens/residents. On behalf of the Expo organising committee, we realise that this cancellation is a disappointment to many, however even a scaled down version cannot guarantee your health and safety. We look forward (eagerly) to planning for the 2022 event and will keep you posted as to developments.”
All About Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club At the recent Open Day held at the Maleny Historic Society Precinct one of the vehicles on display within the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club was a Halfinger light 4WD. This was just one of many rare vehicles on display, These vehicles are very rare. The Haflinger is a small, lightweight, four wheel drive, high mobility cab over vehicle about 3.5 m long and 1.5 m wide, powered by a 64 cc flat twin horizontally opposed, rear mounted, air-cooled engine. The vehicle weighing around 600kg can be lifted by four strong people and yet can carry a load of 500kg. The trucks were manufactured between 1959 and 1975 The Australian Army had 46 Haflinger vehicles which were each equipped with a dedicated trailer unit and were often allocated to RAEME units where typically an individual craftsman, like artillery artificers, would use the vehicle to carry tools and other equipment around the field attending to technical servicing of weapons platforms and fighting vehicles. Haflingers feature in the 1971 Doctor Who story Colony in Space. It is said that the name “Haflinger” originates from a horse breed of the same name. What you learn at Maleny Museum Open Days!

Sustainable Living & Gardens With Grahame Staines
DO WE ONLY EAT HALF OF WHAT WE GROW?
We propagate seeds, we plant seedlings, we maintain and water our gardens, but do we only eat half of what we grow. This is something that I think about now on a daily basis and when I walk through our gardens each morning, I'm conscious of what I can pick and eat that day.
Believe it or not, the plants will thank you for it because they will produce more fruit. Please be aware though, some leaves, like tomato leaves for one are toxic and I wouldn't be suggesting you eat anything that has been sprayed, so it's important to be sure of the edible ones.
All are ground digging and all smash our gardens constantly.
Sweet potato leaves, pea shoots, carrot leaves, small cabbage leaves, small broccoli leaves, cauliflower leaves and stems, radish leaves, beetroot leaves, turnip leaves, brussel sprouts leaves, kohlrabi leaves and lots lots more that we don't consider.
Some would say it's rabbit food, but add some of these leaves to a sandwich or wrap with a squirt of mayo and a slice of cold meat and I believe you will change your mind.
This is the only way we have beat this problem. Shade cloth protects our garden and also acts well as a mulch. It lets light in, water through, stops weeds and eliminates our problem with wildlife totally.
Consider doubling your harvest this way and getting the most out of what we grow. GROW FOOD AT HOME Keeping wildlife out of our gardens. This has been an ongoing experiment for us because we have had an invasion of wildlife in the past six month. Bandicoots, Antechinus, Bush Turkeys are just a few of our local animals visiting us nightly
We have tried Chilli Powder, Mustard Powder, Garlic Spray, Mustard Sprays and Traps will some success but the regular attention is time consuming and costly.
Whether it creates other problems with our soil, can't answer that one yet. Time will tell. The only thing I can say is, it's good to go out into our gardens every morning and see them untouched.

Rock on at the Maleny Christmas Concert!
For decades Maleny has hosted an awesome Christmas Festival and Street Party in Maple Street. Well the town will be rocking on again this Christmas, however due to Covid regulations, the 2020 venue will be at the Maleny Showgrounds on Friday, December 11 from 6pm. The concert features four hours of great musical entertainment and Christmas spirit, including Gemma Kirby, Lucy Gallant and legend Kelly Cork.
Don’t forget to bring your own picnic blanket or chairs to sit on the big oval or the hill and enjoy this fantastic Christmas and end-of-year concert. There’s plenty of food – gates open 5pm so you can grab a bite to eat from the famous
Lions sausage sizzle stand and Maleny Neighbourhood Centre’s curry bowls and sweets.
Rotary of Maleny will be running a bar with beers/wine/premixed spirit drinks and soft drinks for sale.
