The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News A story
from the past with
Beryl
Newton
Miss Roberts Came to Maleny as a school teacher. She was a city girl coming to the country and taught at the Curramore State School. She married a Maleny farmer and lived a very happy life in the Maleny District with Bill, her husband who passed away in the late 1990’s. Miss Roberts is better known to us today as Mrs. Beryl Newton. Beryl passes away peacefully on January 1st, 2015 aged 101 years. Back in 2015 “Miss Roberts” told us a bit about what it was like as a country school teacher.
M
rs Beryl Newton came to Curramore as Miss Robert as a relieving teacher in April 1936. Initially It was to be for four months but she remained until her death in 2015 aged 101 years. Curramore was a one teacher school, with 14 or 15 students, whose ages ranged from 6 years to 13 years. They were in four classes, or grades, and beside the usual english, arithmetic, history and geography, she taught civics and morals, which included an odd subject – “good manners” – from a chart. As well there was physiology, sewing, singing, drawing, gardening and the treatment of cuts and bruises. School dances were held and the whole neighbourhood turned up. Children learnt the waltz, fox trot, barn dance and the one step. Music was supplied by Gunboat Smith of Elamon Creek. He played the accordion, and he used to chuckle as we tried to match steps to the beat as we polka-ed. Most of the children walked or rode horses to school. Some http://www.hinterlandgrapevine.com
faced a walk of two or three miles between home and school. One afternoon a student raced in to tell me that Murray Rapp had an accident on the way home. Cantering through the bush, a small dry branch had penetrated the calf of his leg. I sent one of the children to phone for the ambulance and sent the others home to Cedar Creek to tell the parents what had happened. By this time I was with Murray, so I sat with him in arms, while the sun sank lower and lower and the mosquitos descended in droves. We were both very glad to see Alex Myers and my landlady’s husband arrive with a stretcher. Murray was carried up the long steep slope and spent some weeks in hospital. Murray still limps today. There was not a square foot of level ground in the school grounds, which were almost covered in fallen logs, rocks, wild raspberry vines, snakes and in the wet weather, leeches. The door of the outside toilet was shielded by an ill shaped
corrugated iron wall. One morning one of the children rushed in yelling, “Miss Roberts, Miss Roberts, there’s a snake in the girls’ toilet. Of course I went to investigate, followed by fourteen pupils. I stepped into the toilet to be greeted by a a huge snake, which reared up to confront me. It was a carpet snake so Murray and I got a couple of sticks to carry it down to the back fence, but as we walked past some rocks a second large snake reared up to bar our way. That did it!! We killed both snakes at once. The children came mostly from the dairy farms, and most of them helped milk in the morning before school and then again in the afternoon after they got home. Not everyone had milking machines, so the bigger the family the more milkers there were. I knew just how hard it was for those particular children. I don’t think I ever gave those children homework. “This was the beginning of a very happy life” Shop Locally & Shop with a Friend 2

help loosen and lift biological growth, and then Mother Nature takes over. The weathering process gently removes the decomposing growth over time without damaging the surface it has infested.
The original Wet & Forget concentrate has a unique combination of biodegradable selective fungicides to target moss, mould, lichen, algae, and general biological growth. When diluted with water and applied to a dry surface, it immediately attacks the growth. These fungicides work in conjunction with a carefully selected range of surfactants to
Wet and ForgetRapid Application is the new and improved, readyto-use, hose end version of the original Wet & Forget outdoor concentrate moss, mould, lichen and algae remover. It works exactly the same way as the original Wet & Forget 5L concentrate, but it comes in an easy, ready-to-use bottle. Wet & Forget is safe to apply to any exterior surface. Just spray and leave. This can be sandstone, bricks, pavers or tiles.
Just spray and leave, and then over time the surface will come clean.
How much Wet + Forget do I need for the job? For an average 3 bedroom tile roof (approx. 150sq metres) with black mould, you will require either 2 x 5L Wet & Forget concentrate bottles or 2 x 2L Rapid Application bottles. Due to the undulations in the tile, the area being treated is actually larger than 150sq metres, and this is why we say to use 2 packs. This also depends on how much of the area is covered with biological growth and how porous the surface is.
How and When to treat your roof Wet & Forget and Rapid Application are best applied to a DRY roof on a cool, dry day with minimal wind. This will avoid the product being blown away as it is being sprayed on and will also avoid it evaporating too fast in the hot sun or on a hot surface. Make sure that there is no rain expected for at least 6 hours, as premature rain can wash the product off before it has properly penetrated the growth.
