Introduction Welcome to Centennial College
Message from Ann Buller President and CEO, CENTENNIAL COLLEGE On behalf of our Board of Governors and the Centennial College community, I extend heartfelt congratulations to our intercollegiate athletes on a job well done. Both our players and athletics' teams have celebrated many successes over the past year. Our Women’s Soccer team won the Bronze Medal awarded by the Ontario College’s Athletics Association (OCAA).The underdog COLTS defeated the top ranked 1st, 2nd, and 4th place teams along the way only to be defeated by the eventual three time provincial champions. This group's work ethic was exemplary having three female athletes recognized by the OCAA and their coach selected as the OCAA Women's Coach of the Year, and Canadian National candidate. The Men’s Varsity Soccer Team had four players recognized by the OCAA, and the team was named as Centennial’s AllAcademic Team of the Year with a 3.39 average GPA. The team’s Head Coach was named as the OCAA East Division Coach of the Year. Two student athletes one from Men's Basketball, and one from Women's Soccer, both exceeded the 4.0 Centennial Honours Academic benchmark receiving the OCAA AllAcademic Award. At Centennial, we define success in many ways, including by our ability to help students develop their leadership competencies and maximize their potential. Those who have embraced and donned the Centennial green have helped to build our brand and raise the awareness that Centennial College is one of the best places in Canada to learn, study, teach and work. Our Intercollegiate Athletics continues to grow with new offerings and I am pleased to see how our athletes continually demonstrate their Centennial pride. Their conduct on the court or on the field, in the classroom and in the community, continues to be exemplary. Centennial remains committed to making a difference in the community and beyond by giving our students the opportunity to learn the values of global citizenship, inclusion, and leadership. Equipped with these competencies, our students will have the critical thinking skills that they need to take the lessons they learned onto the field of play and into their field of study and beyond.
In the end, it's extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more that, too. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then it takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. And finally, it takes a great deal of love, fairness and respect for your fellow man. Put all these together, and even if you don't win, how can you lose?

Message From The Athletics & Recreation Manager
Manager Athletics and Recreation Steve McLaughlin Centennial College is located in the heart of Scarborough and has 4 unique Campuses that offer a full slate of 2&3 year diplomas plus an expanding number of degree opportunities and post graduate courses. The Athletics and Recreation Department is pleased to present to you our “COLTS in Action” year in review. Although this publication focuses on our intercollegiate sports, we offer a range of intramural, extramural, wellness, recreational and fitness initiatives. The Centennial College varsity program is in the midst of a major transformation. The construction of the AWC (Athletic and Wellness Centre) in 2009 has paved the way to add new teams and host major sporting events. The Centennial soccer and basketball teams consistently challenge for provincial championship appearances and our badminton, golf and cross country teams continue to grow. We are now preparing for the launch of men's and women's volleyball with Olympic Beach Volleyball bronze medalist John Child coordinating the program. We are also developing men's hockey and cricket. Student athletes that participate on an OCAA (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) Centennial team receive a player kit which includes; track suit, sport bag, and COLT shirt. Teams travel on the official COLTS bus and receive a meal subsidy. Players are also supported with pre and post-game Athletic Therapy services and rehabilitation treatment provided in the AWC Treatment Room. The success of our student athletes is equally important on and off the field of play. Our SAAS (Student Athlete Academic Success) program is designed to identify and support student athlete academic concerns should they occur. The Athletics and Recreation Department also recognizes the significant commitment student athletes and offers a minimum $1000 Academic Athletic award to those that participate on an OCAA team and maintain 2.5 GPA or better. Exceptional student athletes are eligible to receive a maximum of $2500 per year. A tradition of academic and athletic excellence is at the core of the Athletics and Recreation Department. We would not enjoy our team successes without the dedication of our students, staff, faculty, and Student Association. I hope you enjoy this publication and would be happy to answer any questions. Academic Athletic Awards Acknowledging Academic and Athletic Excellence
Centennial College has a financial award program that acknowledges student athlete excellence in the classroom and in the field of play. The program is funded through a combination of private sector, foundation office, student fees and Alumni Association donations.
Objective: To financially assist full time student athletes enrolled at Centennial College who has demonstrated a combination of academic achievement, outstanding athletic ability, and leadership qualities as a participant on an OCAA Varsity team.
Value and Payment: Beginning in the 2013/14 season, student athletes on the “active roster” of a Centennial College OCAA sanctioned intercollegiate team are eligible to receive a minimum $1000 Academic Athletic award subject to a 2.5 GPA. (NOTE: One semester OCAA sports are eligible to receive 50% of the available funds.) Cheques are dispersed in two equal installments in December and April following confirmation of academic standing. A financial award in excess of $1000 (maximum $2500) will be offered to those student athletes that have demonstrated a combination of exceptional athletic ability, leadership qualities and academic excellence. Head Coaches will submit the list of players to receive additional funding to the Athletics and Recreation Department for consideration and processing. Foundation Office Awards A number of $1000 Academic/Athletic Awards are available to student athletes as the result of donations from retired Centennial employees, Alumni Office and the private sector. The Athletics and Recreation Department will consult with Head Coaches to target student athletes with a financial need. The identified student athletes will be required to complete a formal application and provide documentation confirming a minimum 2.0 GPA.

Students can discover our gym and fitness facilities, all of which are absolutely free of charge to students. Get access to great equipment and services all while staying fit and healthy.
The Morningside Campus has a renovated student and staff Exercise Room that features new fitness workout equipment, an aerobics floor, and scheduled times for Table Tennis and more.
The new Athletics and Wellness Centre (AWC) is a Centennial College Student Association Inc. initiative that began in February 2007 after students voted in favour of constructing the building. The AWC is a state-of-the-art facility with a new gymnasium (approximately 65,000 square feet), squash courts, an 80 metre indoor track, a climbing wall, a Wellness Treatment Centre, a cardiofitness area, locker rooms and two aerobic studios.
Ashtonbee Campus Ashtonbee Fitness Centre has a brand new gym built in 2013. The facility includes a Yoga room, Exercise Room, Women's and Men’s Change rooms, Weight Room Area and projector for presentations.

Story Arts Centre Campus The Story Arts Centre is located in East York, Toronto. It has a small workout and activity centre new for 2014. Students of the Story Arts Centre may also sign-up for and use the services of Frog's Gym.

Women’s Soccer Win Bronze at Provincials in Ottawa
Winners
The Lady COLTS Soccer Team, earned their first Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's soccer medal since 2000! Our hard-working team won the bronze medal match on penalty kicks against Algonquin College on Saturday October 27th. In the bronze medal game Centennial drew first blood with a goal by Nicole Campbell in the 16th minute, forcing Algonquin to play catch-up. It took until the 76th minute for the Thunder to tie up the game with a corresponding goal. The remainder of regulation play plus and additional 30 minutes of overtime solved nothing. The teams had to settle the outcome on penalty kicks. Centennial goalkeeper Maryem Serradilla-Sonmez came up big with three great saves. After the Colts failed on two occasions to seal the win, the seventh kicker Colleen Johnston converted the game-winner as Centennial outlasted Algonquin 4-3 on penalty kicks, resulting in a 2-1 victory.

Centennials’ Men’s Basketball Tip-Off Against The Chinese National U18 Basketball Team
RUNIT TOURNAMENT The Centennial COLTS Men’s Basketball team faced off against the Chinese National U18 Men’s Basketball Team in the Ryerson Rams RUNIT International Torunament. The teams exchanged handshakes and gifts at the beginning of the game. It was a fast packed back and forth affair. Ultimately the Chinese gained the upper hand defeating the COLTS and running away with the win in the latter part of the game.

Varsity Sports Women’s Soccer - Outdoor
It was quite the Cinderella story for the Lady Colts soccer team, not having qualified for the OCAA post-season since 2004. the team finished the season with a record of 3-4-1 placing 5th in the division. They needed two big wins on the road against La Cite and also top seeded team Sheridan to advance to the Championship Final. Centennial battled hard and came up on the winning side in both games 1-0, with Goals from OCAA All Star Mariam El-Masri.
In the Championship Finals they came up short in a 3-0 semifinal loss to Humber that placed them into the bronze medal game. The game was tied 0-0 until the 79th minute when Humber finally broke the stalemate. The team then bounced back to take revenge on Algonquin who had beaten them earlier in the season. The COLTS won the game in Pk’s to take the Bronze Medal. Arin King, was named a tournament All-Star. Congratulations once again to the Lady COLTS!

Varsity Sports Women’s Soccer - Indoor
The Ladies were looking to follow up with similar success as to the outdoor season. Their hopes were set high after being semi-finalisst in our own centennial tournament and then becoming runners-up in the George Brown Indoor Invitational. At Regionals the ladies went undefeated defeating Algoma 4-0, drawing against rivals Seneca 0-0 and dispensing with Fleming 3-1. The ladies were poised to repeat their performance but were hampered due to the unavailability of a number of key players and were caught short on bodies for he Provincial Finals. The ladies fought gallantly but were unable to stop Humber losing to them once again as in the outdoor provincials by a score of 2-0. The lady COLTS then faced Conestoga where fatigue was a factor losing 4-0. For the last contest of the day, they were not to be outdone mustering up a win against Georgian 2-1 to finish the season on a strong note.

Varsity Sports Men’s Soccer - Outdoor
The Mens Soccer Team found the success in the program that they had been looking for over the past 8 seasons. The team fought hard this season only to end in a heartbreaking first round loss to Fleming in the play-offs. The season has not only set a standard for years to come, but has set a statement throughout the OCAA, that Centennial Colts have come here to stay. The Centennial Colts finished 5-2-1 scoring 18 goals and allowing only 6 goals against the second least in the OCAA. The team ended the season in third place in the OCAA East. New recruits fit in well with the returning seniors who have been a part of the program for a couple of years. There seemed to be a bond that had not been here before in years past. Going into next season there will be big shoes to fill to continue the success. The COLTS had 4 players recognized by the OCAA, they were Thomas Critelli (East Defender of the Year & OCAA All Star), Ali Ahmed (OCAA All Star), EJ Powell (East Scoring Champion), and Mark Tarazhi (East Rookie of the Year). Aside from players being recognized, Head Coach, Julian Carr was also named as the OCAA East Division Coach of the Year. Although the season was cut short there were many positives that were taken from the experience to be built upon and carried over for the new prospects coming in. The bar has been set, so it must be met or exceeded.

Varsity Sports Men’s Soccer - Indoor
The Mens Indoor Soccer Team stated their indoor campaign on a positive note making the finals of their own Centennial Annual Invitational Indoor tournament before losing to Sheridan 4-2. along the way the team defeated a very talented Centennial Alumni side in Pk’s to advance to the final. The team had shown that it had come of age. The COLTS Men's Soccer Team advanced to the Provincials for the first time in 8 years. The COLTS went undefeated at the OCAA East Indoor Soccer Regionals beating Durham 4-1 in the opener. Then the team tied National Champs Humber 2-2, and finished the day beating ST Lawrence 7-0. The team placed second in the group to Humber on goal difference scoring 1 less goal. At Provincials the team struggled to find the net losing 1-0 to Fanshawe and 1-0 to Fleming, a team they beat 5-0 previously in the indoor season. In the last game of the Provincial round robin the team caught fire beating Sheridan 7-1 and taking revenge for the previous loss. However it was a case of too little, too late, as the indoor season came to an end.

Varsity Sports Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball was looking to best the success of their previous season having made the medal round with a record of 18-2. This season started just as fast and furious with the team going five games before they recorded their first loss. From then on the team continued to play successful basketball but lacked consistency in the tail end of the season. The team finished 15-5 and placed 4th in the division. They were now required to host a play-off game against Niagara. The team dispensed with Niagara as they were looking forward to the Provincial Championships. In the Provincials the team never found their rhythm having to face The Sheridan Bruins the number three ranked team in Canada. the bruins dispensed the Centennial Colts and went on to Nationals. The Bruins were tested early, but pulled away from the Colts in the second quarter en route to a 73-59 victory. Stern and Williamson paced the Colts with seventeen points each along with sixteen from Jarrett. Terence Nelson added ten rebounds. The Centennial Colts season came to an end after losing the next day to the George Brown Huskies 76-56. The Colts were led by Tristan Stern who had eighteen points and six rebounds. Stern was the player of the game for both games for the COLTS.

Varsity Sports Women’s Basketball
The women’s basketball program was looking to grow and improve this year in their third year of OCAA competition, as the team had a lengthy absence from play. Growing pains continued with the new program as the team failed to make play-offs this year. On he bright side the ladies battled hard all season to finish in sixth spot with a record of .500, 9W & 9L. Normally this would have been good enough for a play-off berth, however, Humber was guaranteed the spot as host of the Provincial tournament. Bright spots along the way of the season included defeating cross-town rivals Seneca 52-46 and George Brown 62-60. Tamara Francis-James garnered and Athlete of the week and was also named to the All-Star Rookie Team. The ladies are looking to continue to grow for the 2013-2014 season, with hopes of making post-season play. Training has already begun!

Varsity Sports Cross Country
The COLTS have added Cross Country Running to their sports lineup for 2013. Coach Sean Squires, the Manager with the Centre for Academic Quality at Centennial for the past 3 years at Centennial. Squires is a Marathon Runner and Coach who has run several international marathons including Boston, New York and Prague and Chicago. Sean has an extensive background in coaching, ofciating and playing sports at both the competitive and recreational level. His emphasis is on Team Commitment and Positive Experiences for the athletes. His motto “Runners are made - not born!” will serve the new team in developing a few runners for the upcoming season and for years to come. Also giving a helping hand is Athletic Manager Steve McLaughlin. Steve is an avid sportsman and runner. He can be found any day and everyday doing 10K at lunch time running out the back of the school or across the neighbourhood. This years teams will feature 12 runners of which Saed Grifth is expected to carry the torch for the Centennial’s Men’s Team. On the women’s side Erin Maitland and also Jillian Doll, a double sport athlete who is also part of the Women’s Varsity Soccer Team are the COLTS contenders. The cross country team had a good showing this year in it’s debut outing and plans to improve in 2014. Centennial returned after a 27 year absences last participating in 1985-86. The new team is primed to return to the fold.

Varsity Sports Badminton
Varsity Badminton has had a long and successful history at Centennial, including nine Ontario Gold Medals and several Canadian medals. Centennial Badminton continued to chase that tradition and were finalists in the Georgian Open Team Tournament placing 2nd overall in the round robin. The team of Nualan and Yi Feng went to the Quarters of the Fanshawe tournament. For 2013 the team had five members participate in the provincials, which was held at Centennial College’s own, AWC. Maria Shupilina went 5-1 in women's singles play, placing third in Regionals. The Centennial men's doubles team of Kevin Ronkiewicz and Kevin Guan and women's doubles duo of Sarah Nualan and Jia Yi Feng also advanced to the OCAA championship, placing second at regionals. At Provincials, only Nualan & Yi Feng were in medal contention , however, the team was unsuccessful. Both players are eligible to return next season.

Varsity Sports Golf
The COTLS rejoined the world of Golf in 2012. Centennial has proven excellence in the past having won an OCAA GOLD three times in the 1970-1971, 1971-1972, 1990-1991 seasons. Individually, Ted Holland captured OCAA Gold in 1971 and Jean Paul Beddard captured Bronze in 1990. New Head Coach James McNabb headed up the team for this years season. The team competed in a couple of tournaments before Provincials; Forest City National (Fanshawe College), Hunters Point (Niagara college). the season culminated in the OCAA provincial tournament event at St Clair College. the team did well however failed to capture any hardware. We look forward to next season on the green.

Varsity Sports Volleyball
Former Olympian and Centennial College alumnus John Child has been named as the coordinator of the college’s newly restored men’s and women’s volleyball programs. It’s a fitting homecoming for Child, who played varsity volleyball at Centennial’s DEL Gym while studying business administration, honing his skills for what would become his Olympic victory just five years after graduating in 1991. Under the direction of varsity coach Janus Packoski, Child would learn the techniques and discipline of a winning team member. The Centennial Colts volleyball team beat out 29 other colleges to win the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Championships in 1988. During his formative college years, Child would distinguish himself by winning Centennial’s Male Athlete of the Year award twice. After graduation, Child traded his gym gear for business attire and put his 4.0 GPA to good use managing his father’s car rental business. Despite the long hours at work and his dedication to raising a young family, Child couldn’t shake his interest in volleyball. He would become an eight-time Canadian National champion and three-time Olympian in beach volleyball, capping his sports career with a bronze medal win at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, along with team mate Mark Heese. The winning duo would go on to grace boxes of Kellogg’s Corn Pops cereal – an awe-inspiring honour for Canadian Olympians! In addition to 15 years of professional beach volleyball, John has played indoor volleyball for many years. Child transitioned from being a celebrated player to an outstanding coach who has garnered experience mentoring everyone from young beginners to aspiring Olympians. Child was the head coach of the Havergal College volleyball program, and more recently established a new volleyball club in Leaside, which he oversees as technical director. This fall, he returns to Centennial to coach a fresh squad of college players. “It’s a great honour to have John return to his alma mater and continue to mentor the next generation of student-athlete volleyball players,” says Steve McLaughlin, Centennial’s Manager of Athletics. “Having a former Olympian of John’s stature head up our new volleyball program is exciting for everyone involved. John is an exceptional and inspirational athlete who enjoyed a legendary playing career at Centennial. Most recently, John was named to Centennials’ inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame in April.” “I am pleased to join the team at Centennial and bring my expertise to the Athletics Department to coordinate and lead this new initiative,” says Child. “I look forward to building and developing a program that will bring back volleyball to Centennial.” After a 20-year absence, Centennial will begin club play this year in preparation for rejoining the OCAA in 2014-2015. Child will name his complete coaching staff in the near future.

Extramural Sports Volleyball • Dodgeball • Jr. Varsity Basketball
The Ontario Colleges Committee on Campus Recreation (OCCCR) is recognized as the governing body for campus recreation activities within Ontario's colleges. The development, implementation and promotion of quality programs and services allows us to enhance students' educational experience through their participation in the recreational sport and wellness activities. The extramural sports offered at Centennial are Basketball, Cricket, Dodgeball, Hockey, and Volleyball give students the opportunity to participate in a more competitive level than intramurals. Each sport is organized in a day tournament format and the number of tournaments varies between each extramural sport. tournaments and were able to secure a place in the OCCCR's Final Four Challenge Cup Series.
Volleyball The Co-ed extramural volleyball team practiced weekly and competed in 4 tournaments throughout the year, 3 indoor and 1 indoor beach. A second team was added halfway through the year and both teams competed well against some of the top extramural volleyball teams in the GTA. Centennial hosted its first tournament since the addition of the Athletic & Wellness Centre and saw the Colts concede a hard fought battle to Humber Lakeshore in the semi-finals.
Dodgeball This was the first year an extramural dodgeball team represented Centennial College competing in three tournaments at George Brown, Humber Lakeshore and Redeemer University. Led by team captain Jason Matheson, the Colts were able to dodge, duck and dive their way through each tournament. Overall, it was a successful start to a fun and competitive program.
Extramural Basketball Also known as the JV Basketball team allowed players an opportunity to compete against many other extramural teams in the Toronto area. The team competed in 4 tournaments and were able to secure a place in the OCCCR's Final Four Challenge Cup Series. The team placed third overall capturing bronze in the Championship Tournament
Extramural Soccer Extramural soccer was recently introduced at Centennial. There has been an influx of players at the school over he past few years. We have added this sport in order to satisfy the interest of students by adding another sports team to our lineup. The amount of talented players that were unable to play for the Varsity team gives us hope that our extramural team will be very competitive.

Ice hockey returned after a year hiatus, and introduced new players to the competitiveness and commitment necessary to be a successful team. The hockey team was able to practice weekly and competed in 5 tournaments from November to March. With a young roster of mostly first year students, the team looks forward to next year and building off the first year experience. Of note was the fact that a female was accepted into the ranks this year with the team. A highlight of the season was at the Humber Lakeshore Invitational where the Ice Hockey team defeated George Brown in a shootout in the opening round of the tournament. Extramural Hockey UTSC Tournament Lost 5-1 to Seneca Newnham, Lost 7-0 to Trent University, Lost 2-1 to UTSC Fleming Lindsay Tournament the team posted three losses. L, 4-1 Trent U, L, 8-0 Georgian Barrie, L, 7-1 UOIT.

Extramural Sports Cricket
The 3rd year since its inception as an extramural sport, allowed the cricket team to build off the previous experience. The team competed in 3 tournaments, one being hosted by Centennial, and captured first place in the Humber Invitational. This enabled the team to secure one of four spots in the Challenge Cup series. In the Challenge Cup the team failed to secure a medal. We look forward to a successful season next year.
