With the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, an effort was made to quickly release currency for the new German-Austria nation. Banknotes of the Austro-Hungarian Empire were overprinted with “Deutsch-Osterreich.” Issued between 1919 and 1922, the notes still read their original issue date.
