Window Shopping Analogy Recently, the University of Melbourne adopts a new type of education system, which is the ‘Melbourne Model’ program. This system changed the old scheme of specialization into more cross-disciplinary program. Melbourne Model program also allows people with an undergraduate degree in any-discipline to enroll in MSD. It means that there is a need for the ABP Faculty to be more open to public. ‘Window Shopping’ is one analogy that could be used as the strategy to promote the study programs of the Faculty. Just like in shops, it will mainly about displaying items (from posters to 1:1 installation). The hall becomes a livable space that is full of resources and inspirations.
“ Window shopping is a fun and inexpensive pastime enjoyed by people all over the world.”

Post-It Pixel Wall by Duncan Wilson and Sirkka Hammer “A wallpaper consisting of four layers of varying grey tones on a bright primary backing. Each layer is perforated in a grid format and backed with a tacky adhesive similar to ‘post-it’ notes. Pixelnotes is inspired by the way we work within a space. The walls become functional, an integrated noticeboard that documents our activity within the room. Pixelated formations and shapes develop according to our patterns of use.

Flexibility Hizkia Gouw In general, flexible space is a space that could be used for different purposes. It means an open-approach design, where users can re-design or modify the space according to their needs. Furthermore, flexibility also relates to the word ambiguity, as there are various functions that could occur in the space. So the challenge for designers is to design a space which has a definite function, yet the space itself remains flexible in its interpretation.

Week 4 Design Brief
39
Informal Learning Experiences The approach to designing the studio hall in a new ABP building is to consider the manner in which student learn. From my own experience as an architecture student in this faculty, I have observed that a good deal of the learning that occurs at university does not necessarily take place inside the formal class room. More often than not it is the numerous times when students meet, discuss or work together. So the hall should provide these opportunities for students to have a relax conversation for sharing information, such as ideas, new projects, or can be just simple as their university life.
New Melbourne Model Recently, the University of Melbourne adopts new type of education system, which is the ‘Melbourne Model’ program. This system changed the old scheme of specialization into more crossdisciplinary program. At the moment, in ABP Faculty, there is only one bachelor degree which is Bachelor of Environment (B.env). After students graduate from this degree, they could choose variety of specific post-graduate program. Architecture, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, and Property, are few examples of the major area. In addition, Melbourne Model program also allows people with an undergraduate degree in any-discipline to enroll in MSD. It means that there is a need for the ABP Faculty to be more open to public. ‘Window Shopping’ is one analogy that could be used as the strategy to promote the study programs of the Faculty. Just like in shops, it will mainly about displaying, so views would be one of the key aspects.
40
Heritage The University of Melbourne is the second oldest universities in Australia and the oldest in Victoria. They are proud of their history. Even they asked to incorporate Joseph Reed Façade into the new scheme of ABP building. So it would be interesting to explore this façade, not only as the exterior appearance, but also from the inside of the building.
Flexibility Flexibility is one of the important aspects in this studio hall. This studio hall would be the main space or area where students or staffs mingle together. There will be multi-activities that happen, from informal discussion to end year exhibitions. It is important to create a space that could transform easily. Open-plan would be an easy choice; however it will form new problems, where the space becomes too flexible, no definite function, and at the end turns into a death space. The new hall needs to address this issue by creating an invisible or ambiguous boundary that divide the space according to their assigned function. Landscape could be one of the possibilities to create this boundary. Thus, as the boundary is not so obvious, the space itself will remain flexible in its interpretation. Furniture is also play big part in the area of flexibility. Moveable, transformable, or easy-assemble furniture could support a flexible space. However to alter these furniture require extra effort. Will people invest more energy to do it? Maybe no. Students usually just leave the furniture as it is. The solution can be furniture that already has a specific function, but it still opens to be used in multiple ways. People do not have to ‘make over’ the space frequently, as it already works on their own.
41
Embraces the Verticality of the Hall The Hall is approximately 4 levels high. One thing that should be considered to design the atria, is to embrace the verticality of the space. It could be done by placing really big and tall object in the space, Another option is in some way bring the upper floor levels blend into the Atria. IT University in Copenhagen by Henning Larsen Architects is one of the examples of where the arrangement of studio rooms in upper level creates an interesting composition into the hall.
Architectural Information There is a common problem in design studio’s right now, as most of the students never seen the real deal of architectural construction or materials. They just understand and see everything behind the computer screen. So if the new ABP building could offer these experiences, it would develop student’s mind in their studio’s project. The building could become the collection or the source of architectural information. One to one model from studio groups (like the skin in the old atrium) could also be displayed in the hall. As a student I feel the frustration of theory-driven virtual architecture in studio. The one to one model concept will make students see directly their works in real thing. It will offer the new dimension in design’s studios, as most of the design project just stop in what we called a schematic or conceptual design. In addition, by placing their works in the hall, students will feel that they are part of the building. In a way, it also promotes the faculty to the public.

Amplify John Wardle Architects and NADAAA In this studio you will explore a range of ideas focused around informal learning environments. These explorations will be set around and within the proposed central studio space for the new Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne. This space is intended to become the focus of activity for the faculty in the future. It will be un-programmed space and a place for
The general programmatic organization of the current Schematic Design will be the starting point. You will be asked to develop design strategies that create new environments for learning and a sense of place and community for the entire Faculty within and around the central studio hall space. Indeed, your ideas will not be constrained by the conventional demarcations between enclosed and open spaces, or studio and hall, or
