Design Concept
“Over four centuries, more than 18 million people were forcefully removed from Africa to the Americas (including the Caribbean) and Europe. They were being pushed, intimidated and cheated during their slavery time. So the main idea for this memorial is to capture the journey that the slaves went through in the past. It tries to make people remember the pain that the slaves felt. It will teach the lesson about the wicked thing of slavery. This memorial will engage with the visitors. It would be worked as a pavilion, where people could go through the interior space of the memorial. The inside space of the memorial could be described as an ambiguous space, as there is a combination of open and closed space. From the exterior, it would be a flat box with triangle openings that grow from smaller to bigger in size. The idea of plain faces of box is to create a contrast with the interior’s form. It tries to hide a complex geometry in the interior space of the pavilion. Then, in the exterior there will be a continuous triangle panels that fill the space. There is also an opening in each panel that also grows from almost nothing to big opening at the other end. So when people start walking through the pavilion, they will feel the space quiet dark and intimidating as there are lots of distractions from the triangles panels. As they walking through, the space will become more open. All of these features try to replicate the journey of slavery, which were come from dark and uncomfortable spaces. At first they only the glimpse of hope or in this memorial is illustrated by spark of light.

Alexander Malm ‘Slice N Slide Art Pavillion’
Logic Diagram
This design of this pavilion tries to replicate the journey of slaves. At the beginning, they think that there is a glimpse of hope for their future, but after time they realize that the hope is getting smaller and finally become nothing. This pavilion starts from high and big opening, and it gets smaller towards the end. The rotation of the square creates the sense of intimidation that the slaves got.

The overall shape of the installation was created to illustrate the life of slaves. They always want to catch the crystal at the top in order to get better life. Although the crystals look amazing and seductive, they will push and hurt the slaves with their sharpness.

The main purpose of creating these frames to make a space that is hard for people to walk to. The idea of creating frames inside a frame is trying to give an experience of slaves that were pushed, manipulated and cheated during their time. The intention of this memorial is to make the visitors remember and visualize the paints of slaves.

Metamorphosis
1.
Create a box which will be the basis for the size of the memorial.
2.
4.
Form surfaces from those lines. Then, offset each surface in order to create opening.
5.
Define random points (XYZ Coordinates) inside the box, using the random command.
Use attractor point to determine the opening size in each surface. So, as the idea is to create a space from dark to light, the attractor point is located near one face of the box.
3.
Make a connection from the random points. For example, from 1 point, draw 4 lines to 4 closest points. It will create triangulation of surfaces
6.
Then, pick the faces from the box that we made earlier. Just pick the right, left and top faces, so the front and the back will be used as the entrances that people could walk through.
6
7.
Divide the surfaces in u and v direction. After that, create an opening that would be mapped into the divisions.
The idea of creating uncomfortable space
8.
Then, for once again use the same attractor points to determine the size of the openings. The direction which is start from smaller to bigger, is following the idea of dark to light.
9.
Finally, create additional items to connect each surface. So, it would be fabricated as planar surfaces, and then the connectors will shape those surfaces during assembly process.

Grasshopper Model
Create a frame for the box. Use an attractor point as the reference for the size of each hole.
Defining random points (xyz coordinates) in the box.
Find connections between each point. For example is by creating a rule to draw lines to 4 closest points.
Make triangle surfaces from those connections. Then offset the surfaces to get openingspoints.
Use an attractor point to determine the size of the openings for each triangles.

Fabrication Proces

Connectors
Then, during fabrication, they all fabricated in correct angles and fitted together. However, the fabrication of the outer box frame did not turn as i wanted. The laser cutter did not cut through the material, and when i peeled out the pieces, they just tore apart. At the end, i made a decision to use boxboard, as the frames.
Labelling for fabrication process
Example labelling of the triangle’s frames.
The connectors are the most important part in this model, because they determine the direction of the triangle frames. So it is important to get connectors and frames nicely modelled during modelling phase. As the connectors hold the frames, so i made a choice to use thicker material for them. In addition, labelling also takes big part in this fabrication, since each connector has to connect to specific side of frames.
