The Queen's Baton Relay for the Commonwealth Games passes through West Lothian on 15th June, and Bathgate has arranged a host of events or the day so that everyone has a chance to join in the celebrations – see the article on page 8. As usual we've been speaking to local business people to bring you details from behind the scenes and who runs various local businesses – in our recent reader survey this was one of the features many people said they liked to read. And we've pulled together hair and beauty tips, contributed by local people running hair and beauty salons, to help you get prepared for summer.

Queen’s Baton Relay coming to Bathgate and Armadale Sunday 15th June The Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay will take in breathtaking scenery, iconic landmarks, remote outposts and city arenas on its tour before arriving in Glasgow this summer. It will be West Lothian’s turn to host the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay on Sunday 15th June. Some 100 hand-picked baton- bearers in West Lothian will lead the baton relay through towns and a programme of events is planned in each town to mark the relay. Events will take place along the baton relay route which will include Whitburn, Bathgate, Broxburn, Linlithgow and Armadale. The route will finish in Livingston and events are planned in each of the towns. West Lothian Council Leader John McGinty said: “We are delighted that the baton will be coming through West Lothian on its historic journey.
“We are encouraging families to join in the celebrations by lining the streets and enjoying the festivities across our towns and villages." In Bathgate, the activity will be focussed around three areas including, Kirkton Park, The Steelyard (town centre) and at Xcite Bathgate Sports Centre. Friends of Kirkton Park will provide a free community celebration focusing on local culture and heritage with a key link to the previous visit to Kirkton Park of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1955. On the day, live music, dance, sport and children's entertainment will be available for community members. The Steelyard will provide demonstrations and the opportunity to try wheelchair basketball. Stalls and live music alongside a variety of demonstrations from community groups will contribute towards a pre, during and post event atmosphere.
“We have a fantastic programme of events planned for the day, running all day, giving West Lothian residents of all ages the opportunity to show their support for Glasgow 2014. We know already from the response to events running in our schools that there is a real appetite to embrace the games and get involved.”
Xcite Bathgate plan to deliver an open day alongside structured group exercise activities which provides the opportunity for local groups to get involved. Additional outdoor space provides community clubs with opportunities to get involved throughout the proceedings.
Depute Provost Dave King added: “West Lothian has 100 baton bearers, including a pupil from every secondary school, who will play an important part in the celebrations taking place throughout the day.
Balbardie Primary School is scheduled to hold a netball and table tennis tournament which will witness one of the many baton bearer ‘change-over’ points.
I was fortunate enough to be on the selection committee for West Lothian and was hugely impressed with the standard of nominations.
In Armadale, activity will be focused on three main areas including, Armadale Community Sport Hub, Volunteer Park and Armadale Community Centre.
8 konect
During the lead-up to the baton proceedings the community centre will encourage all to part take in a world record attempt of the’ Superman Dance’ at Volunteer Park. Organisers are hoping that over 1000 community individuals will help set a new world record.
Armadale Community Sport Hub will host a National Soccer 7’s football tournament.
Armadale Community Centre is scheduled to hold a display of cultural celebrations, historical information alongside the opportunity for individuals to try activities such as bowling.
For more information visit: www.westlothian.gov.uk/queensbatonrelay
Baton events in Livingston The relay will finish its West Lothian leg in Livingston. There will be a parade along Almondvale Boulevard, with representatives from local schools, sports clubs and gymnastic display teams. The parade will continue along the Boulevard, past the skate park, in front of the Civic Centre and into Howden Park. In the build-up to the parade, there will be street performances and events including gymnastic displays in the Centre, a performance of 'The Pokey Hat' from Grinagog Theatre Company and the chance to climb a mobile climbing wall or take part in an Army assault course.
Xcite Armadale is scheduled to open their doors offering an open-day to encourage community participation.
In Howden Park, a variety of community art and sport groups will display stalls alongside providing tasters and demonstrations which will include judo, football, gymnastics, cricket and tae-kwon-do. Other activities will include young people's crosscountry event; mini Commonwealth Games and demonstrations from West Lothian Xcite. A stage will be erected and managed by a commentator in Howden Park where various activities will take place throughout the day, including athlete interviews; performances from local choir groups and a professional band to round off the event.

BEAUTY SPECIAL
Summer is nearly upon us at last. Following on from the fitness feature in the last issue, this month we've been consulting with local hair and beauty salons to bring you their top tips for hair and beauty this season. From styles and colours to sun-protection and water-proofing, read through their tips and check through the adverts for special offers to make sure you're ready for the season!
Summer Hair Styles
by Kellie of Delicious Hair
For hair this season it's all about high gloss shine gelled slick back sides and tousled locks. Or the messy plait, check out Victoria Beckham catwalk show - her models sported slick low neck ponytails with chunky headbands. The 1930's slicked boyish comb-over is back and bang on trend with Stella McCartney, Fendi & Dior catwalks all displaying the look. If you're looking for wedding hair or up do's for going out, look no further than ethereal dreamy up-do's using a laid back approach for effortless romantic style. Also effortless slept-in hair is still in trend this summer.
12 konect
Try using water and conditioner only for sexy, tousled textured hair without looking greasy. The key is to make it look "undone" but well done. And last but not least, 70's sexy curls with low side partings. Beauty is all about natural this summer. Carefully groomed high arc brows are in, and for your nails, coral, peach, nude and lavender are top colours to use. Coconut oil is making waves - use on your body to help improve hydration and moisturise dry skin on your body and feet. It can also help alleviate eczema, and used on your hair it can help with dry scalp as it penetrates the hair shaft resulting in glossy smoother hair and amazing feeling skin.

BEAUTY SPECIAL
Summer Beauty Tips from Beauty Therapy by Jacqui Jennings
The most important summer beauty product that you’ll need is SPF 30. Either as a moisturiser or a foundation that has SPF included, it will protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun and against premature ageing. So, before going out to embrace the sunshine make sure you’ve got your SPF 30 on. Then you can go out and enjoy all of that lovely vitamin D from the natural sunlight - essential for healthy bones.
Make Up To get that perfect summer sun-kissed look, opt for a lighter foundation or tinted moisturiser. This will even out your skin tone while adding some radiance without feeling too heavy. And make sure you apply a light powder to your 'T Zone' areas to prevent shine, then add your bronzer to highlight face and give you that healthy summer glow. To create a softer summer look with your eyeliner and mascara, “less is more.” Apply less eyeliner and smudge it slightly, and remember always use a waterproof version so it stays in place all day without running or smudging. Then finish off the look with a satin finish lipstick or gloss and you’ll have that perfect sun-kissed look.
Holiday Essentials Make sure you’re fully prepared and perfectly preened for the holiday season with my top 5 holiday essentials: 1. Waxing: Put your bikini on with confidence and wax away any unwanted hair while keeping your skin nice and smooth. 2. Manicure and Pedicure: Treat your hands and feet to a splash of colour to enhance your summer tan and stay glam in your flip-flops. 3. Spray tan: You don’t have to wait to go on holiday, why not treat yourself to that essential sun kissed glow so you’ll be ready to start your tan off? Remember spray tan does not have a sunscreen so although you look bronzed still apply your SPF as normal. 4. Tinting eyebrows & lashes: Avoid panda eyes by tinting to darken brows and lashes to give you definition. 5. Shrinking Violet Inch Loss Wrap: For that last minute slip down book a Shrinking Violet Wrap to help remove any unwanted fat from your problem areas. A pre-holiday treat to give you that extra bikini confidence.
most "The summer ou'll rtant impo product y 0" ty beau ed is SPF3 ne
Then relax and enjoy the holiday season, whether you're home or abroad you’ll be looking and feeling fantastic. And for any help achieving your sun-kissed look, why not arrange an appointment to come and see me at Beauty Therapy by Jacqui Jennings within Krop & Co.

What is Weight? by Michael Smith, Personal Best, Armadale Our bodies have water, muscle, bone, glycogen energy stores, creatine energy stores and body fat, to name the majority. The all weigh something and they all effect the scales.
Is all weight gain bad? Nope!
• Water - We can gain water which makes us more efficient at cutting body fat (1 litre of water weighs 1 Kg). Even vegetables are up to 70% water and we know they are good for us. • Energy stores - Our glycogen and energy stores weigh something. When we store more energy in the body when can train harder, we have energy and we feel good. Food is energy. • Muscle – We all know muscle burns body fat right? The more muscle we have the more body fat we can burn. It’s as simple as that. Muscle stops body fat from returning. We are not talking Arnold Schwareneger muscle, but if you want to keep fat off, you should think about getting leaner.
Surely all weight loss is good? Wrong!
• Bone Density - If we don’t eat enough we can loss bone density, leading to serious medical problems and pain. • Water - If we lose water weight and become dehydrated our bodies don’t function properly. We lose strength, energy and mental clarity. • Energy stores - What about the other energy stores? If we cut our calories we get rid of our energy. So how can you train and live the way you want to without energy? Jumping on the scales tells you nothing about the way you body changes. Get specific, be smart and measure what you really want to change. You can be lighter with more fat, less energy and significant dehydration. Think about it and get help from the professionals. It’s what we do. For more information contact Mikey on Michael@personalbestuk.com, tel 07546356748.

Fair Deal Autos The Fair Deal Autos brand is already well-known and respected in Bathgate, where their first garage opened 10 years ago. A few years later they added a garage on Gorgie Road in Edinburgh and, going from strength to strength, they have recently opened their third garage in Polbeth Industrial Estate, near West Calder. I met owner Arthur at the new Polbeth premises to find out what makes Fair Deal Autos different. “A lot of hard work and focus on customer service has got us to where we are today,” says Arthur. “We're an RAC approved garage, meaning we had to meet strict criteria required by Motor Codes to get the accreditation. We are audited by them on an annual basis.”
Motor Codes is the automotive consumer body which makes sure that customers are treated honestly and fairly by garages. It's a typical minefield for garage customers – how do you know that the quote you've been given for your vehicle repair is honest, fair and carried out competently when you don't know much about cars yourself?
“We want to look after customers from our local area, regardless of what car they drive, and we have the flexibility in-house to do that" Using an RAC approved garage is a good start! Fair Deal Autos carry out RAC and other companies' warranty repairs, and are proud to serve a huge range of customers who feel comfortable with the friendly and open approach they of the garage. The Motor Code also covers details such as the standard of the reception area. “We have wifi, kids' toys and coffee machines in our reception areas,” says Arthur. “Our Polbeth premises has a coffee shop just a few doors down so customers tend to go there for their coffee instead..” They are also part of the Auto Crew network, run by Bosch, which means they are Bosch approved too and have access to the latest technical data, diagnostic equipment and original equipment spare parts. Fair Deal Autos cater for all types of vehicles, be that top end luxury vehicles or your beloved banger. “We want to look after customers from our local area, regardless of what car they drive, and we have the flexibility in-house to do that. Each of our three garage premises has a “master mechanic” who has at least 25 years experience, and the combined experience of all staff at each garage adds up to over 100 years.” Between them, there is nothing they haven't seen in the trade. Despite opening only two months ago, Fair Deals Autos in Polbeth has already attracted new clients

from Polbeth and West Calder, as well as customers from other areas who already know and trust them coming to the new premises. Good customer service is a recurring theme in my conversation with Arthur, it is clearly something he is passionate about. I query him about his £25 MOT deal, as many people are suspicious of what is perceived as a cheap MOT, suspecting that their vehicle will be deliberately failed. “We've been offering £25 MOTs for about 9 years,” says Arthur. “Initially yes, it was hard to convince people that this is a genuine price and that we will not deliberately fail vehicles. But we have proved ourselves over the years. We rely on the increased business that this rate brings to make up any shortfall in income.” From starting out with one small garage, they have steadily expanded based on solid business practices, good service, repeat customers and word of mouth referrals. And it's not only customers who agree, as Arthur points out - “our Edinburgh branch is in a prime spot on Gorgie Road. The landlord would not normally
have given such a prime spot to a small business like ours. But having checked out our excellent record and business ethos, they decided to take us on as tenants.” Fair Deal Autos aims to provide dealer-level diagnostics and service at a much more reasonable rate than you would get at a dealer. With friendly staff, courtesy car and pick-up drop off services (subject to availability), Fair Deals Autos work hard to make sure your service and repair is a hassle-free experience.

Jade for June by The Stone Ring Jade is known as the dream stone and as the stone of fidelity. It brings realization to the potential and devotion of ones purpose. It also assists in improving the memory of dreams and helps in dream solving. Jade was very often used in helping to release suppressed emotions via the dream process. For this activity a piece of Jade is placed under the pillow prior to sleep. Jade was revered in the Myan culture as the Sovereign of Harmony helping to facilitate peace within the physical, emotional and intellectual structures. Jade is also said to bring accord to the environment and to transmute negativity and to instil resourcefulness. It is claimed that Jade was used in the Breast Plate of the High Priest of this culture.

Stress and Hypnotherapy by Bernie Rowen Consulting Most of us know that stress can be debilitating. Symptoms can include headaches, shaking, forgetfulness, sleeplessness, anger, frustration and a general feeling of discomfort. Hypnotherapy seeks to inform the conscious mind through accessing the sub conscious mind while the client is in a very relaxed state. The hypnotherapist gives the subconscious mind trigger words to assist in relaxing the client and encourage them to maintain relaxation by training the mind. A clinical hypnotherapist does not: make anyone do anything they do not want to. Stage and entertainment hypnotherapy is completely different - it is there to entertain. Clinical hypnotherapy is used to assist in healing various problems, from anxiety and stress to stopping smoking, weight loss and dealing with fears and phobias. We assist young people in a positive attitude towards
exam anxiety as well. We treat people who suffer from a fear of flying and even arachnophobia, and agoraphobia. A session is 50mins long and the therapist should be registered with a controlling body, such as the National Council of Psychotherapists. Baguette Express Facing onto George Place in Bathgate's town centre, there is more to the Baguette Express shop than meets the eye. Behind the scenes, business owner Nav works tirelessly to add new products, try new flavours, and focus on keeping prices low and quality of the food as high as possible. His working day commences at 7am, when he is in store chopping vegetables and salads, preparing the fillings for the day. He buys fresh produce twice a week, going to the market and preferring to select the produce himself.
Fresh rolls are delivered daily for their bacon rolls, and they have just launched a range of coffee using For the summer Baguette CafeAroma brand and they have all been on training course to Express have just added a lean how to make cappuccinos range of ice creams. There and lattes.
are always eight flavours on display, to enjoy as a cone, waffle, in a tub, or as a milkshake or smoothie!
Some supplies are determined by the Baguette Express franchise, but Nav has quite a bit of flexibility to try out different fillings and toppings according to what the local market wants. But Baguette Express is a lot more than just baguettes. Nav always adds different products according to the season, such as hot pasta over the winter. For the summer they have just added a range of ice cream, launched in May. They tried many different brands and settled on Crolla's for best taste and value for money. And customers obviously agree so far - their initial delivery was supposed to last a month but they had sold out in a week! They have had weekly deliveries of ice cream since. At £1 for a single cone, there are always eight flavours on display and the flavours change weekly so there is always something different, cycling a total of 20 different flavours. You can have a smoothie or milkshake made out of your favourite flavour, hot waffles with ice cream, or purchase in a tub rather than in a cone or waffle. So however you like your ice cream, you'll find something to suit you at Baguette Express!

Another product to be added for the summer is fresh fruit pots – they usually do a selection of fresh fruit salads daily over the summer to top off your lunch. Many locals stop for their lunch at Baguette Express but may not realise that it's also the perfect place to grab breakfast.
They open from 8am daily, so pop in on the way to your first job for the day.
The pricing at Baguette Express is very simple. For £2.30, you select either a baguette, panini, wrap or jacket potato and fill it with any filling or combination of fillings, sauce and salad you want, all for the same price.
Sauces and condiments are good quality (they use catering suppliers Lowman's) so your nice salad filling isn't going to be NEXT E T ruined by an over-vineagary GUET A B 1 £ mayonnaise. DAY

There is a Baguette of the Day every day for a reduced price, and the first Wednesday of every month is always “£1 Baguette Day”, which is fantastic value, so if you've not tried them before, put the date in your diary to go and head to Baguette Express for lunch on Wednesday 4th June. The in-store pizza bar works much the same way as the baguette section, where you select your base style and size, then select your toppings and salad and it is made in front of you. In the two and a half years since opening in Bathgate Baguette Express has built up a solid base of regular customers. Friendly staff Annie and Jo (both local Bathgate people) love a blether with

their regular customers. Nav says it was a struggle in the early days to overcome the reputation of the previous baguette shop that was on the same premises, but they have persevered. So for a value-for-money wholesome lunch, pop into Baguette Express, they will be delighted to serve you. They are open at 8am to serve breakfast and open late for pizza and icecream, smoothies and milkshakes.

Property Matters
Should I Sell During the Summer Holidays? By Craig Turpie Some sellers feel that if they have "missed" the spring market, they should wait until September before selling their property; but there are solid reasons for marketing your home during the summer. Firstly, your house is likely to look its very best. The bright days and long evenings mean that your accommodation will look light and airy, and any views from the house will be accentuated. Your garden will be in full bloom and adds real value to the purchaser's perception of your home - they won't just be looking at rooms! If it is a family house, children's slide/swings etc. can only make the house feel more like a home - a real hot button for the family buyer. Longer evenings also mean that the opportunity for positive viewings is extended, as partners can view together.
32 konect
Serious buyers do not let holidays, sports, etc. get in their way and are sometimes frustrated by the reduction in choice, as other sellers delay bringing their property to market or sometimes withdraw their homes over the summer holidays. Those with children may be under some pressure to secure a property before the new school year and, as a result, could be prepared to pay a higher price in return for a swift purchase. September is also a popular time for those moving jobs. They will certainly be hoping to move in towards the end of the summer so they can get the move out of the way before putting all their energies into their new position. So, if you are considering the possibility of selling, or know someone else who is, why not help us supply the demand that we’re anticipating this summer. It could pay you handsomely.

Music Review
The Regal Music Club by James Kerr
Increasingly the inconvenience of an deceased artist is no handicap to the release of new material. Michael Jackson returns this month with his second posthumous album Xscape, a "contemporised" collection of eight previously unheard tracks along with six of the original unadorned demo recordings. Opener and current single "Love Never Felt So Good", co-writen with Paul Anka in 1983, is easily the pick of the bunch, recalling the easy flow of the "Off The Wall" album and earlier solo recordings. Immediately thereafter, "Chicago" is a more challenging listen,
coming close to horrific Craig David/Seven Days territory and unconvincingly set atop a squelchy bass synth riff absent from the original recording. More successful is the incorporation of parts of the melody for America's "Horse With No Name " into "A Place With No Name", further buoyed by the addition of a Stevie Wonder "Superstitition"-esque riff which works surprisingly well. Jackson had previously tried a similar trick with the alteration of "Heartbreak Hotel" into the bizarrely named Jacksons track "This Place Hotel". Typical of the album however is "Slave To The Rhythm" (not the Grace Jones song, unfortunately) where the pudding is over-egged to the extent that the proliferation of 2014 beats stand out like bad GCI in a Hollywood blockbuster. So a mixed bag, but still worthwhile and with only the faintest scent of grave robbery - should the demos have been allowed to stand alone? At least there is the opportunity to compare and contrast the original versions with the super powered remixes and make up your own mind. The Regal Music Club meets fortnightly on Wednesdays at the Regal Theatre, Bathgate, 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Visit https://www.facebook.com/RegalMusicClub for more info, or just drop in. £2 including refreshments.
Charity of the Month
The Food Train, West Lothian The Food Train is a Scottish charity with local volunteers, providing a vital grocery delivery service to older people across West Lothian. Also on offer is Food Train Extra, which is about doing small household tasks within a customer's home. Most recently launched is the outreach library service. Food Train aims to be a ‘one stop shop' for older people – by providing services that are preventative and support people to live independently at home for as long as they are able and choose to do so. If you or someone you know is 65 or over, and finds it difficult or impossible to do the regular grocery shop, the Food Train may be able to help. There is a £1 annual membership fee, and once you're a member you have access to the range of services on offer from Food Train.

SERVICES 1 Food shopping You complete a shopping list which is collected by Food Train volunteers. Your order is then packed in the shop in a box, complete with your till receipt and original list, then delivered to your home where on receipt you pay the cost of your shopping, plus a small delivery charge of £3 in either cash or cheque.
2 Food Train EXTRA Food Train EXTRA is a home support service that members have access to. Small household tasks are undertaken via local volunteers – such as cleaning inside of windows, fridge cleaning, light bulb changing.
On registering for the service we will offer basic home safety and security advice and will arrange a visit from the Fire Safety/Community Police Officers should you wish. Each task will have a minimal charge – usually £3 but this can be lower or higher depending on the length and difficulty of the task.
3 Food Train Outreach Library Service Recently launched in partnership with West Lothian Council Library Services, we offer an outreach library service to those unable to visit their local library due to frailty or disability. Although not a befriending service, it does offer the opportunity for social contact with our friendly volunteers.
OUR VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are vital to the success of Food Train, and without them we simply wouldn’t be able to operate. Anyone over the age of 16 can volunteer, subject to a “Protection of Vulnerable Group” check. The great thing about Food Train is that because of the diverse roles we offer, volunteering with us can be flexible. If you want to make a difference to older peoples lives then why not come and join us! You could be a shopper, driver or a helper with our delivery service or an Extra volunteer. We also offer library volunteering. Food Train offers a supportive environment for people to volunteer whatever their reason for volunteering, so if you are trying to get back to work or have additional support needs, then we might be the right place for you! Volunteering is good for you too! It can make you feel good by giving your time to help others. It can be a very social activity and help you meet new friends. Volunteering can also be good for those wanting to fill a gap in their CV, whilst developing new skills at the same time. All our volunteers have access to training, disclosure checks and support with personal development. It doesn't matter how little time you have to spare you can do something worthwhile to help older people in West Lothian. Give us a call on 01506 413013 to get involved.
Food Train customers say... “I certainly wouldn’t be eating as much, as I cannot carry heavy shopping: it has been a godsend to me” “I find your staff excellent: I have much more independence because of your service”. “I can stay in my own home, don’t know what I would have done without it for my shopping, god bless”.
Food Train history Food Train began in Dumfries in 1995 following a community survey of older people that found many of them struggling with their weekly grocery shopping. The idea was developed to ease this burden on older people. A partnership of local shops and volunteers formed, and Food Train began making deliveries of fresh groceries to older people in need with the help of local volunteers and shops. Over time and with support from various bodies such as the Scottish Government, Community Food & Health and the Rank Foundations, the Food Train has expanded into other areas including West Lothian, and aims to continue developing across Scotland to bring food access to all of Scotland's older folk. It is a thriving, multi award-winning charity supporting older people in 6 local authority areas.
