With thoughts turning to the summer at last, we've put together a guide to help you get fit and in shape for the season. We were very impressed with the huge range of services available locally, and the feature is packed with tips and local businesses to help you get into shape and feel good.
Message from the Editor
We've teamed up with Norton House Health Club in Ingliston to run a fantastic competition as part of this feature. You could win one month's family membership and a spa day for two! Every entrant will receive a complimentary day pass for two, so well worth entering! In addition, they are offering an exclusive joining offer for konect readers, see pages 18 - 19 for details of the joining offer and competition. Just along the road between Bathgate and Linlithgow is the tiny village of Torphichen. It is a quiet and charming village and you possibly usually have no reason to go there, but it used to be the Scottish HQ of the famous Hospitaller Knights of St John. Read about it in our history article on pages 48 – 49 this month and do try and fit in a visit some time this summer.

Get in Shape for the Summer Your Local Guide to Health and Fitness The weather is improving, summer holidays booked for the lucky ones who are getting away, layers of thick cover-up clothing coming off... it's a good time to be thinking about getting fit and losing a bit of excess weight. In fact it's always a good time to think about improving fitness, so the konect team have been speaking to a lot of people involved in the fitness industry locally to pull together some ideas for you. Humans are complicated and there is no such thing as one solution that suits everyone. But we've come up with an astounding variety of options all available in the local area, and regardless of your current fitness level, age, interests and time you have available, you'll be able to find something to suit you. From gentle walking with a group through to serious fitness training such as Crossfit Bathgate, there is a huge range of activities that you can do in a group or individually. Martial arts for adults and children (you may have seen Kuk Sool Won demonstrations in the Centre at Livingston or in Bathgate for example), dance classes, cycling, swimming, even wrestling - an energetic new Livingston-based company Reckless Intent aims to “help bring back a respectable wrestling scene to West Lothian... and offer opportunities that enable people to be involved in something positive and to help them develop skills needed in everyday life.” We've spoken to personal trainers, specialists in post-surgery fitness, local nutritionist Edyta who has provided a healthy recipe this month too. The Clubs and Classes section at the back of konect each month is always a good source of ideas for joining a fitness class or taking up a new skill that involves physical activity.
The following are a few fun suggestions to help get you started, but always take the advice of the health and fitness professionals represented in this feature. 1 Fitness is a habit If you approach each task everyday with a view to how it can improve your fitness you'll be amazed at how, for example, not being able to find a parking space near the shop or venue you want becomes a positive thing, not a problem! Yay, I get to walk an extra 250 metres! Might even have to run if I'm a bit late too! Take the stairs not the lift – often repeated but actually true and you'll be surprised how it can change your attitude. 2 Will power is limited ... ... and let's face it, losing weight does require willpower, be it to get to your exercise class or to change your eating habits. So if you're dealing with other stresses in life that are taking up your reserves of selfcontrol and endurance, you'll find it harder to resist over-eating or skipping your class when you're tired. View your fitness time as time-out for you from your other stresses, not just another chore that you have to fit in. And it is easier to resist junk food when you're just back from a work-out and feeling good, rather than at home feeling overwhelmed and consoling yourself with a sweet treat. 3 Morning light helps you lose weight! No this isn't a joke... a recent study shows that people exposed to natural light in the morning are leaner than those exposed to light later in the day. And it has nothing to do with physical activity, calorie intake, age or season! It has to do with body clock and metabolism - as I said above, humans are complicated but if you're looking to lose weight and need all the help you can get, get outside in the natural light in the morning. 4 Calories eaten < calories expended = beach figure If only it were that simple. Cutting calories is an effective way to lose weight, but it has to be done in a sensible and healthy way and ideally in conjunction with regular exercise. You can't go too wrong with eating plenty of fruit and veg (the new recommendation is 7 portions a day) and cutting down on the cakes and biscuits.

TNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIA Grapefruit juice is a great appetite suppressant – take it like medicine in the morning to stave off the sweet cravings. Use smaller plates/bowls to reduce your serving size, or give yourself a rule of “no seconds.” Be sensible – going without food completely is not a healthy choice, neither is crash dieting! Consulting a nutritionist is well worth it even if you only need to make small changes to your diet as they can devise a diet that is sustainable and enjoyable for you. 5 Getting children involved early in sport sets up good habits for life, and, as for adults, there is something to suit all tastes locally. Martial arts
classes are a popular choice - Kuk Sool Won is a very friendly group with a large children's section called the “Wee Warriors” and many families have parents and children attending classes. Astro Gymnastics in Livingston start off with a pre-school programme called “Shooting Stars.” And of course there is always the excellent skate park and BMX tracks. We hope this feature encourages and inspires you to make some positive changes. There really is something for everyone, so whatever your goals, look through these pages and you will find something to suit you. Even one small change is better than nothing at all. So there is no excuse!

Happy Walking by Karen Murray Regular readers of this column will be aware that my walking exploits tend to be dictated by the pathways available en route to a business meeting, or waiting while a child attends some sporting class or another. Where there is a section of pathway that can be walked or run while I am out and about, I try to fit in the time to do it. I do like to venture further afield and enjoy a full day’s walking in the hills but that of course requires planning and often but not always entails going further afield. You might wonder why all the ‘exercise squeezing in’ - is it not too much trouble? Why bother? Well of course the top reason is one of health and well-being. We all know physical activity is good for your body - aiding a healthy heart and supple joints to begin with, however physical activity is also good for mental health and is one of the main reasons I do all the ‘squeezing in’. Regular exercise can boost your self-esteem and help you concentrate, sleep, feel and even look better and it can make you happy! The fact that endorphins are released in your brain when you exercise has got to be a number one reason to do it - we all want to feel happy. So let’s look at a few plus points for regular exercise: • -decreased stress • -increased energy • -improved sleep • -better focus • -sense of achievement • -reduced anger and frustration • -healthy appetite Now to see how and where you can fit in a short walk: There are numerous walking routes all over West Lothian and the surrounds and I just try and factor in a little extra time between appointments or while taxi-ing kids around to make sure I can add in a walk or run.

AL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * FITNESS SPECIAL * When driving anywhere that takes me past the Lizzie Bryce roundabout in Livingston I pull into the lay-by nearby on the A71 and walk down the steps to walk along the paths of the Calderwood along the Murieston Water.
There are so many other paths from Mid Calder that you stride out along in a lunch hour or between meetings, just as there are paths from the Howden Centre in Livingston, or anywhere along the Water of Leith starting in Balerno, Currie or Juniper Green.
There are then a myriad paths spiralling their way through the woods and you can wander for as long as you have time. To change it up a bit I sometimes park on the other side of the road and head off up to the top of the grassy bing nearer Mid Calder, taking in the view.
The ones I have mentioned are but a few. They are all ones I have walked or run along several times and probably written about in full in this column but there are still many more out there that I have not made time to experience and I am sure many of you will know of others.
If I am driving to Bathgate, I always take the A89 rather than the M8 so that I can take my constitutional in the grounds of the old Bangour Hospital or further along the road in the hidden beauty of the Petershill Wildlife Reserve. Cairnpapple Hill or the old Korean War Memorial the other side of Bathgate are sometimes included if I have more time.
I go for opportunity, grabbing it when I can but I do intend to make more time now the lighter nights are here and pick some more of the scenic routes to try out. There are several Nature Reserves I have not yet visited so they will be on my summer list.
Work in East Calder can include a circuit within the Almondell and Calderwood Park - usually to the Visitor Centre and back or a stroll along the main road to the Oakbank Bowling Club where you can head off road and through the woods to the river, following it along for a short while.
Of course as it is exercise we are discussing, when the weather really is foul or if you have no other option, there is always Mall Walking - which as the name suggests is getting your exercise walking around the shopping centre. And why not I say? The fresh air might the missing but the endorphins will be released nonetheless!

What Do Tarot Readers Do? by Bernie Rowen CG Jung coined the phrase “synchronicity”; this has meant many different things to different people. The actual meaning according to Jung is ‘synchronicities are meaningful coincidence’. When a tarot reader sees a card in a particular placement in a reading s/he would translate the symbolism depicted in the card and put it into the context of the client’s life. When the client draws the cards, contemplating their question, the moment in time that this takes place carries information, as universal consciousness is available to be tapped into. It is understood by academics and mystics alike that the symbolism of tarot has evolved and that it doesn’t have a clear cut history as to how it has come to be the card system that it is today.

Artisan Cheesecakes Bathgate’s newest indulgence If you've not yet been along the road to Bathgate to try the wares of their newest business on South Bridge Street you're seriously missing out. Artisan Cheesecakes proprietor Wendy McQueen has turned her passion for baking into a business, and we're so lucky that she chose Bathgate as home... Creative taste combinations, familiar favourite flavours, a total passion for cheesecake...these are some of the ingredients that have made this new local family business a draw from all over West Lothian since opening in November. The daily batch of cheesecake is sold on a first-come first-served

basis and they have been known to sell-out before close of business. They are about to start supplying the Fairway Hotel in Bathgate, and several locals have been recipients of speciallycommissioned birthday cheesecakes incorporating their favourite flavours. We taste-tested the millionaires cheesecake and were totally smitten. Wendy has always enjoyed baking and she loves the homeliness of good wholesome homebaking shared with family and friends. After many years of moving to different towns and cities in the UK (her husband was a professional footballer and they moved for his work), they settled in Bathgate to be near other family in the central belt.
Artisan Cheesecakes We are a dedicated, enthusiastic team and cheesecakes are our passion Cheesecake and freshly ground coffee to take away New flavours every week Available by the slice or a mini cheesecake, or order a whole 9” cheescake for a special occasion
87 South Bridge Street, Bathgate, EH48 1TJ www.artisancheesecakes.co.uk
01506 238030 Wendy decided to bite the bullet and follow her dream of setting up a business based on her passion for baking. And she can't praise Bathgate highly enough for the support and welcome they have received. She says, “The community has been really welcoming, everyone is friendly and warm, we feel so at home here.”
"Creative taste combinations, familiar favourite flavours, a total passion for cheesecake ... these are some of the ingredients that have made this new local family business a draw from all over West Lothian" The very warm welcome might be to do with the delicious creations coming from the Artisan Cheesecakes kitchen! The quality of the ingredients that go in is of paramount importance. “I think if you always use the very best ingredients you can't go wrong,” says Wendy. “
All dairy products are from Graham's Dairies (of Bridge of Allan). Fresh fruit is from Armadale Greengrocers”. A range of different biscuit bases is used, and Wendy likes to experiment with new flavours every week; when I visited coconut, marshmallows and black cherry was on the menu. Regular favourites include strawberry, fudge, lemon meringue and several chocolate options. None of the cheesecakes contain gelatin, and gluten-free and diabetic versions are available to order. Wendy's son also works in the business, helping not only with the cheesecake but also bringing his coffee expertise. They have invested in a top-end barista machine and sell freshly-ground coffee to take away with your cheesecake, the full range of cappuccinos, espressos etc. So do pop in and try a slice. You purchase by the slice, a mini cheesecake, or a full 9” cheesecake. Wendy and family will be delighted to see you. As she says, “There is nowhere we'd rather be now.”

Almondell Cafe There is an interesting story behind the cafe at Veitch's Garden Centre in East Calder. In the hands of new owner Lydia Forbes since February this year, it is now called the Almondell Cafe and serves a full menu of breakfasts, lunches, hot snacks, home-baking and coffees. Lydia brings a wealth of experience, and her ultimate goal is to be able to set up a cafe near a Zimbabwean orphanage that she has links with. I met her at the cafe to find out more about her plans - and to taste-test the coffee of course!
Lydia makes all of the soups on site – there are usually a couple of flavours to choose from and you can test a bit first to see which one you want – as well as all the fresh sandwich fillings. She also bakes the cakes that are on offer (a delicious victoria sponge the day I was there) and is currently looking for a supplier of fresh baking to help her maintain a great range of favourites. They serve Thomson's coffee – Lydia made me a latte. I'm fussy about my coffee but this one definitely passed the test. “We go with what customers want”, she explains, “and so far they are loving the Thomson's coffee.” Lydia has selected the menu based on experience, and is open to customer feedback – which seems to have been successful so far. According to the garden centre staff there have been nothing but positive comments about the new cafe on site. Her father Ian helps out with the general running of the cafe.

So what is the Zimbabwe link? A few years ago Lydia attended a friend's wedding in Zimbabwe. While there she visited some orphanages, and became interested in finding ways of helping them out. So when she was back on holiday the next year and was invited to stay and help them as a volunteer, she jumped at the opportunity. “The Sandra Jones Children's Village is an orphanage caring for around 80 children, mostly abused girls. They look after them from ages 0 to 18, and they wanted help in the kitchen with staff training. So I spent six months training staff there.” Her dream now is to be able to go back and set up a cafe there to provide employment for the girls leaving the orphanage who have nowhere else to go. Many are re-homed with relatives but some have nowhere to go and Lydia would love to be able to set up a cafe there. Back to the cafe in the garden centre... parcels of tablet made by Lydia are for sale with proceeds going to Sandra Jones Children's Village (yes I tried some of the tablet too!) If you've not visited the cafe recently Lydia would be delighted to welcome you. Use the voucher on this page to get a free tea or coffee, and sample what else the cafe has to offer.

When Torphichen was the centre of Scotland By Helen-Jane Shearer The village of Torphichen is quietly nestled between Bathgate and Linlithgow and you probably don't have a reason to go to the village itself much. But for centuries Torphichen was a bustling busy centre, a destination for royalty, a stop-off point for long-distance travellers and the Scottish headquarters of what was effectively an independent sovereign state. It's an ancient settlement which has been occupied for millenia, but the arrival in the 12th century of The Order of St John, or the Hospitaller Knights of St John, really put Torphichen on the map and they have left their mark even today in West Lothian – local street names, organisation names, the symbol of the Maltese cross that appears in various logos. But who were they and what does it all mean? It started off a long way away from Scotland, in Jerusalem. A group of individuals who ran a hospital in Jerusalem for Christian pilgrims to the holy land found themselves, at the end of the 11th century, dealing with the many casualties involved in the First Crusade. In recognition of their work, the pope created the Order of Hospitallers. Their hospital was built on the site of a monastery dedicated to St John the Baptist, hence their name. They used a white eight pointed cross as their symbol, symbolising the eight nations (“tongues”) they came from and the eight vows they took. As the Crusades dragged on, the Hospitallers took on the role of providing armed escort to protect pilgrims, and thus ended up fighting too – they became a military order waging war on Islam as well as tending the poor and sick. Along with the Knights Templar, the Knights Hospitaller were one of the most famous and

powerful religious military orders. The Order was granted estates throughout Europe by the crusading nations to provide income for their work. They came to Britain to recruit and collect funds, arriving in Scotland during the reign of David I, who was a keen supporter of the Crusades and who gave them land at Torphichen. This became the headquarters from whence their growing estates were administered. David's successor granted, in 1153, “to God and the Hospital of Jerusalem a toft (land) in every burgh of our land.” So they had land all over Scotland and were well respected for their charitable works. In Torphichen their Preceptory (headquarters) consisted of a small hospital, as this was the prime calling of the Order, along with the church and attached administrative and domestic buildings including dormitories, kitchen, dining area and Preceptor's lodgings. Much of their day to day life was involved in administration of their Scottish estates as well as the necessary duties of growing food and herbs for medicines in the gardens around the Preceptory. Rents for all their Scottish properties were collected here, and there would have been considerable traffic relating to administration and financial affairs. It became a significant and very well-resourced community, in keeping with the knights' status in Scotland, receiving many guests and travellers. Once such famous guest was William Wallace. As he prepared to face Edward I in 1298, we know he stayed at Torphichen - the only surviving document we have signed by him was written at Torphichen at this time (It was a letter sent in March 1298 to Alexander Scrymgeour, giving him land as reward for his loyalty).
The Torphichen Preceptory, though, came under the authority of the English Priory of the Order (a higher office) in London. In the early days many of the knights were English, and during the Wars of Independence in Scotland they supported the English side. After his victory over the Scots at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298, King Edward I headed to Torphichen for rest and for treatment of a horseinflicted chest wound. These ties with England made the Order less popular in Scotland during this time. But as time went on naturally more knights were native Scots, and they made several petitions to gain independence from their English Priory. Much later, in the 16th century, King James IV - a regular visitor to Torphichen where he prayed in the church and played cards with the Preceptor – wrote to the Grand Master of the Order in Rhodes expressing his surprise that “members of this Order, even when Scottish by birth and residing in Scotland, had to live so that they looked on the Prior in England as their lord and protector.” Eventually Torphichen did arrange to by-pass the English office and report directly to the Grand Master, based latterly in Malta.
The Order of St John was suppressed during the Reformation and in Scotland all its lands were handed to Mary, Queen of Scots. Much monastic property was razed but Torphichen was spared, possibly as it had been used as a Reformation office or because the Preceptor, James Sandilands of Calder House, Mid Calder, became Protestant and befriended John Knox... However by 1750s, the administration and domestic buildings associated with the Preceptory were demolished and the stones used elsewhere in the village. Only the tower, transcepts and nave were spared. St John's exists in Britain today as the Most Venerable Order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. It was re-established in the 19th century with the foundation of St John Ambulance Association, independent of the remnants of the original Roman Catholic Order of Malta, and in 1888 Queen Victoria made it a Royal Order of Chivalry. St John's ambulances and first aid training are well known in England and many other countries. A Scottish Priory was reconstituted in 1947. It doesn't run the ambulance service here, as St Andrews Ambulance Service was already established, but they do run hospitals, nursing homes, sheltered housing, hospices and rest homes in Scotland as well as mountain rescue services. They support the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem and have links with Malawi. Their motto is to “improve the safety, health and quality of life of people in need.” So the Order today is close to what the original monks set out to do 900 years ago before getting embroiled in war. And St John's are custodians of Torphichen Preceptory on behalf of Historic Scotland. The remains of the Preceptroy are well worth a visit and consist of the tall central tower with the transepts on each side, and the foundations of the associated buildings. St John's have installed an informative display so you can learn more about this fascinating site and its people. The Preceptory is open at weekends from 1pm to 5pm, April to September. For more on the order of St John in Scotland, visit http://www.stjohnscotland.org.uk/

May Music
Toccata Ladies Choir Annual Concert Friday 16th & Saturday 17th May 7.30pm Howden Park Centre Livingston Tickets ÂŁ10
Our musical director, Eleanor Howat, being presented with the trophy at Bangor International Choral Festival.
"Toccata" is a musical term derived from Italian meaning to touch or to stroke. The choir works hard to live up to its name in its performance: touching the heart and stirring the soul. The music is directed by Eleanor Howat, whose authoritative and inspirational conducting draws out exhilarating sounds from the choir. Toccata recently competed in the Bangor International Choir Festival, which was a fantastic experience. The choir sang superbly, were complimented on style and presentation and brought home the trophy for the Light Entertainment class. It is said that music is the universal language and Toccata hopes that, after listening to our music making, the audience would surely testify to that. There will be something for everyone, come along and join us! For more information go to www.toccataladieschoir.co.uk
