‘Where’ marks 51 years T his year marks the 51st anniversary of “Where” magazine, the official guide to Indiana’s Twin Lakes area. Since its inception, the magazine has had a dual purpose. For those looking to visit, “Where” is the guide for what to do and where to go. Whether you’re looking for family fun, adventure or something for empty nesters, “Where” can direct you on where to find it. For the people who live in the area, “Where” lets you know when and where things are happening and what’s new since last year. The Twin Lakes area — including White County and northeast Carroll County —is a unique area, a combination of small Midwestern towns, a resort area along lakes Shafer and Freeman, and Indiana Beach Amusement and Water Park. It has the draws of multiple antique stores, the White County Museum, the Monticello farmer’s

market and the many festivals that we’ve covered in this edition. It’s also a place for sportswomen and sportsmen, with fishing, boating, golfing, camping, hiking and bicycling. Monticello has now made Blue Water Beach park handicapped accessible, including new handicapped accessible kayak docks. For foodies, we have fine dining, traditional Midwestern fare and local breweries and wineries. The area is planning for the future, too. Monticello has begun work on a riverwalk project that will connect the downtown to the lakes’ and the Tippecanoe River’s shores. Chalmers and Monon are planning splash pad recreation attractions. Brookston is growing like a sunflower with new places to go. So we’re glad to see our readers again this year and look forward to telling you all about what’s new when you pick us up again next year.

Walk, bike, hike through nature

or those who want to do exploring and hiking or biking, White County has options for casual or more seasoned travelers. Monticello’s new Altherr Nature Park and its multi-use recreational trail open to bikes and walkers and joggers – any form of transportation that’s not motorized. The 16.5425 acres are located at 724 S. Main St., just north and across the street from City Park. A new nature center is being built, reconstructed from the house that was there, but the trails are ready for use. Further from the city and on the east outskirts of White County is the Panhandle Pathway, a rails-totrails project that runs 21 miles from Winamac to near France Park. It’s a hiking and biking trail that follows the abandoned Pennsylvania Railroad line

and crosses the Tippecanoe River and Mill Creek and through places like Star City, Thornhope, Royal Center and Kenneth. The Panhandle also has special rides, including the Moonlight Ride at 7 p.m. June 7 at the Winamac Depot and the Tippecanoe and Bicycles Too on 7 a.m. Aug. 3 at Winamac Depot More information on the Panhandle and special events is available at panhandlepathway. org. There are also trails near to White County for the dedicated bicyclists. Those are in the Lafayette area, near Peru, in Delphi and from France Park (between Burnettsville and Logansport) to Winamac. A list of Indiana bike trails is at www.indianatrails.com/?q=trails_listS.

‘Rocking the Beach’ at Indiana Beach

I

f White County is the heart of Indiana, Indiana Beach is what keeps it beating. Founder Earl Spackman first opened what would become one of Indiana’s first amusement parks as Ideal Beach in 1926. He started it as a place for locals to swim and sunbathe. However, in 1927, Spackman added a pair of toboggan slides, and then he and the Spackman family added roller coasters, water rides and more amusements over the years. True to its dynamic nature, Indiana Beach has continued to change under the recent ownership of Apex Parks Group out of California. This year, the season officially kicked off on May 11 at 11 a.m. and had a special two day event Mother’s Day on the Bayou featuring Indiana Beach’s well-known Mother’s Day buffet accompanied by the Lemmon Brothers in the SkyRoom. In fall 2017, Indiana Beach added Oktoberfest and Halloween Horror events, which extended park operations and people’s fun past the traditional summer season. “We saw an abundance of positive feedback and are look forwarding to bringing the events back again this year,” Indiana Beach officials stated. Apex Parks spent more than $2 million on the park, lodging and the campground golf course. This year, they’re continuing to make improvements. “We’ve been working hard this off season to provide the best experience possible for our guests. With improvements across

the park, new menu items and the return of some of our favorite events, we’re looking forward to another great season at Indiana Beach,” General Manager Gary Fawks stated. The park will kick off the summer fun on Memorial Day weekend with fireworks on May 26. In June, the Beach is bringing back the successful summer concert series Rockin’ the Beach in the ballroom with tribute bands from across the country honoring artists like The Eagles, Journey, The Beatles, 80s Nostalgia, Queen and ABBA. Special seasonal events will continue. Declaration Celebration, Oktoberfest and Halloween Horror return and Country & BBQ Fest makes its debut Aug. 3. All events will have new and improved food, drinks, activities, fun and frights, according to Indiana Beach officials. Season passes are on sale at $44.99 each for those who buy three or more or for the single cost of $52.99 each. The 2019 Indiana Beach season pass includes: • Unlimited water park visits • FREE Parking in Paid Lots • 1 Bring-a-Friend FREE ticket valid Mother’s Day or Father’s Day 2019 • 1 Bring-a-Friend for $14.99 ticket valid any operating day July 8-31, 2019 • FREE admission to Declaration Celebration • FREE admission to Rockin’ the Beach Summer Concert Series • NEW! FREE admission to the Country BBQ Festival • FREE admission to Oktoberfest • FREE admission to Halloween Horror • Monthly food offers throughout the season • 20 percent off any retail • FREE admission to all other 15 Apex Parks Group locations With an Indiana Beach season pass, people will also have access to all Apex parks, water parks and family entertainment centers. Tuesday night ‘Cruise-in’

onticello’s summer cruise-in began May 7 with some changes. The 12-year-old, summer-long event has moved from Broadway Street to Illinois Street, closer to the Knights of Columbus building. The Knights of Columbus are providing washroom services to the cruise participants, as well as the cookout-style food — brats, chicken breasts and such — they’ve been offering for a few years, said Ken Prieboy, the event chair. “We really don’t want to move off of Broadway,” he said. “(However), we wanted to stay downtown.

Prieboy also wants to work closer with the Farmer’s Market in Constitution Plaza on Tuesdays and to bring in more vendors, arts, crafts and food to give it a festival or flea market feel. He doesn’t plan to charge for booths, he said. The Cruise is scheduled to run from 5-8 p.m. every Tuesday from May 7 to Oct. 15.

can be found below the Norway and Oakdale dams. Other fishing depends on the spot, when a fish species spawning season is and the amount of water going through the dam.

Bacula said the best tips for fishing depends upon what species one is fishing for. One good tip to catch a variety of fish is to “troll along drop offs with minnow-style baits.”

Safety

S

Boating safety a must on the water

ummertime means fun on the water for most of us. Be it fishing, skiing, tubing or just cruising and relaxing, many Hoosiers find being on the water a great way to relax and enjoy being outside. If you are one of them, then you have undoubtedly noticed that, regardless of any impoundment you are on in north-central Indiana, unless it is one with a horsepower or speed restriction, our waterways are generally quite congested. This is especially true on weekends and holidays. This doesn’t mean that you can’t spend an enjoyable day on the water. In fact, at times it can add to the fun as you make your way into certain coves or areas where many boats tie up to hang out. What it does mean is that you must stay vigilant

Page 12

at all times and practice both boater’s etiquette and common sense. For starters, remember the “rules of the road.” It’s that simple. Just as you would on the street, always drive on the right side of the lake. What if the lake is pretty empty? While that may give you a little more leeway, it can get tricky when other boats do appear. When passing another boat, do so with as much space as possible between you and said boat while staying in a safe depth of water and without getting into other boat traffic. Reduce your speed if necessary to remain safe. This is especially true if there are passengers and other boats around. Likewise, slow down if another boat is passing you. This is safer for

both of you. The faster you are going, the faster the other boat must go to get around you. For fishermen in the group, never cut off another fisherman. Always keep an eye out when motoring past docks or piers or along the shoreline. A lot of the time, people will be fishing from them and will have lines cast out. Be sure to give them room and respect their right to fish. Remember, a boat is a motorized vehicle; therefore operating one under the influence of alcohol is not only illegal, but not a safe choice. If you choose to consume an alcoholic beverage, that is fine, just be sure to have a designated driver. There must be enough life jackets on board the vessel for everyone on the boat. Cushion or similar floatation devices are not a legal substitute

for a life jacket. If your boat has a kill switch, use it. When launching your boat at the ramp, don’t be “that” person who isn’t ready when it is their time to drop their boat in. Have everything you can have done ahead of time done so that when you approach the ramp you can get your boat launched and get out of the way as quickly as possible. The ramp is not the place for prepping your boat. Lastly, avoid “road rage” while on the water. You are bound to encounter other boaters on occasion who either do not exhibit courtesy or respect the law. Losing your cool will only lead to problems. Enjoy the remaining summer days out on the water of your local waterway. Just be sure to drive defensively, follow the law and use common courtesy when you do. Where 2019

A local tradition honors

Our military veterans

n Saturday, July 6, the 450-passenger Madam Carroll excursion boat will fill with military veterans to lead a line of more than 100 patriotically decorated boats on Lake Freeman in Monticello for the 15th annual Proud to be an American Patriotic Boat Parade. The parade honors all veterans and is open to not just the veterans but to any men or women currently serving. This year’s parade will honor our Vietnam veterans as the grand marshals. They will each be presented with a letter from Col. Oliver North, whose served during Vietnam and later became a regular on the talk show circuit. Most recently Col North was president of the National Rifle Association. He was also the guest speaker at the White County Republican Party’s annual Lincoln Day Dinner. The Hooligans will again swoop down out of the skies with a precision flight demonstration team with 6

aircraft. A multi-pass flyover by the Hooligans provide an aerial salute to our veterans and current military. The Hooligans will for the first time be recognized with a meet and greet event at the Scoreboard Restaurant where our veterans and the general public will be able to meet and thank the flight team for their never ending support. Water skiers are scheduled to thrill the crowd gathered on the Sportsman Inn reviewing stand to watch the parade. After the parade, Monticello continues the celebration with a good, old-fashioned, small town American Independence Day weekend celebration in City Park. This year a kiddie parade is being organized to parade in the park. This event will kick off the City Park festivities Flag bearing skydivers will drop from the clouds at 1:00 pm. Those attending will be offered free hot dogs, watermelon, ice cream See VET, Page 34

According to the federal government, “we’re the only place in the continental United States doing anything like it,” Alvarez said. Fruitshine uses 1-1/2 pounds of fruit in each jar – except for the blueberry wine, which uses 2 pounds of fruit. This year, Alvarez has added an Indiana blackberry wine. The results seem to be worth the care because it is recognized as one of Indiana’s top 11 wineries by the website, “Best Things in Indiana,” and has people travel 12 or more hours to visit. The winery’s 13 acres, including a private beach and lake, is open for parties of up to 80 people, from corporate retreats to weddings and anniversaries to reunion. See KOPACETIC, Page 33

The Van Meter family gave them a home ...

Where the buffalo can roam

I

n White County, where the buffalo roam is just outside the town of Buffalo itself. Since 1976, the Van Meter family has been raising American bison — better known as the buffalo Native Americans hunted — just northeast of town. There’s the annual tour on the Saturday and Sunday before Labor Day when visitors are taken into the midst of the herds that roam, the Van Meter family pulling wagons into the middle of the herd every hour on the hour from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. However, the Van Meters also give private tours by appointment, and they have had many Native Americans come to the farm as a pilgrimage. “A lot of people have never seen a wild buffalo,” and for those who have, there’s something different about being in the midst of the herd, said Zona Van Meter. “We get asked a lot of questions,” she said. Although buffalo are often curious about new things in their surroundings and are sometimes aggressive toward them, the ones at the Van Meter Buffalo Ranch are accustomed to the three tractors and trailer wagons that haul people into their midst, said her son, Troy Van Meter. No one’s allowed off the wagon, though. The bison have a lot of curiosity, but they are also extremely territorial. The buffalo are technically domesticated, but they don’t handle as well as cows or pigs, which will allow you to lead them around. “There’s no taming them,” Zona said. The idea of raising buffalo came from Carl Van Meter, Zona’s husband. He intended to buy two as a curiosity, but the sellers had two others they wanted him to purchase. He also didn’t tell Zona he was buying them all until it was time to pay. After the family had eight, they bought another eight from a divorcing couple from up north. The buffalo began reproducing, and around 1981 Page 20

or 1982, the Van Meters decided to butcher one of the bulls, Roosevelt; his skull is still hanging at Joe’s Mobile Home and RV in town. In the last four or five years, they’ve had 400 to 500 visitors. On the wall of the gift shop and display area, visitors have signed their names and dates of visits. Signatures with a red star next to them come from visitors from 33 foreign countries, including Turkey, France, Holland, Australia and numerous Asian countries. To get to the ranch, go east at the stoplight in the town of Buffalo, and it’s at East 7095 County Road 1000 North, just east of County Road 700 and on the north side of the road. The phone number is (574) 278-7555.

The unique waterway alongside Canal Park

he only museum designed to tell the story of the Wabash & Erie Canal’s 44 year operational history. From the vision of George Washington to the final collapse of the Canal in 1876 you will learn about the impact the Canal had on the development of the Midwest and your young country. The Canal “highway”, comparable to our modern interstates brought people and products to Indiana and the Midwest during the mid-1800’s. Canal construction began in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1812. Upon completion in 1853 the Canal spanned 468 miles from Toledo, Ohio to Evansville, Indiana on the Ohio River. It provided a water route that connected New York and the East Coast with the Mississippi River, New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico. You will trace the routes travelers took before the construction of the Canal and the “convenience” the canal boats brought to them. In the lobby of the Interpretive Center you will be welcomed by our mural, a series of oil paintings which highlight historic sites along the Canal from Toledo to Evansville. In the museum, you will encounter unique interactive exhibits which provide an exciting way for children and adults to learn about the Canal. You can operate a lock, visit a full-sized canal boat cabin and stretch out on the bunks. Learn how our local papermills produced paper from old clothes or the lime kilns produced plaster. Visit the millinery shop and dress yourself in one of our period costumes, and much more. Page 24

2019 BOAT TOURS Times for public boat tours are offered every Saturday & Sunday afternoons mid May through Labor Day. Prices and Tour schedules subject to change. Call (765) 564-2870 for current prices and times. Chartered Boat Tours run from May through October. Special arrangements are required for our chartered tours. Prices for chartered tours are $175 for the first ride and $100 for each additional ride. “The Delphi” holds approximately 30 people. Rides last approximately 40 minutes. WALK THROUGH HISTORY Some trails and roads in Canal Park were once the towpath traversed by mules and horses pulling canal boats. Those and other trails running through the Park are part of historic Delphi’s 10 mile trail system, perfect for hiking, biking, birdwatching and even crosscountry skiing. Access many trails at Canal Park, open 365 days a year from dawn until dusk, free of charge. Several sites along the way are on the National Register, including the Canal Construction Camp site, Lock #33 and the adjacent lockkeeper’s home site, and the 1857 Harley and Hubbard Lime Kiln site. Located in the back woods of Cass County, Crooked Creek offers a chance to see wildlife while enjoying a relaxing horseback ride. Their trails push you through the wild woods, across the creeks,

Columbian Park Zoo

olumbian Park Zoo was founded in 1908 and originally contained foxes, skunks, pelicans, deer, lynx, prairie dogs, and a wolf. Improvements to the zoo were made in 1928, when the main animal house was constructed and the zoo purchased an elephant with funds raised by local school students. During the 1930s, the zoo began to breed animals to share with other small zoos, and in 1943 added lions, monkeys, elk, zebras, bears, and alligators. The zoo houses more than 190 animals from 90 different species. Columbian Park Zoo is free to the public and open daily from mid-April to mid-October each year, including holidays. Summer hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. until Aug. 11; Hours from Aug. 12-Oct. 12 are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

national historic landmark, located in a 96-acre park setting in Battle Ground, Ind., complete with picnic areas, nature center, historic and scenic hiking trails. The 85-foot marble obelisk monument was erected in 1908 and marks the site of the Nov. 7, 1811, Battle of Tippecanoe between the United States’ forces, led by future President William Henry Harrison, and representatives of Tecumseh’s Native American confederation. The museum tells the story of the battle with exhibits, a fiber-optic map of the action and information about the dynamic leaders — Tecumseh, Harrison and The Prophet. It also functions as the interpretive center for the early U.S. Republic by placing the battle into the historical and geopolitical context of what came before, and of the War of 1812, which came after. The park includes picnic grounds, hiking trails and the Wahba-shik-a Nature Center. To reserve the park shelter, call the Tippecanoe County Park and Recreation Department at 765463-2306. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Wednesday when it is closed. Admission to the museum is $5 for adults, $4for seniors, AAA members and active military; $2 for children 16 and younger; and free for TCHA members. When he returned to his hometown, Manahan teamed up with his family’s The Scoreboard restaurant and bought the old county garage south of Monticello, the restaurant on one side and the brewery on the other. Scoreboard has recently changed its menu and added delivery service. The menu approach is the same as the beer approach, seeing what they want to play with and what they want to grow with. Kopacetic has a band on the first Friday of every month while it showcases another Indiana brewery, and also has entertainment on other nights, bringing in bands and acts from Chicago and Indianapolis that don’t always play Monticello. About 200 volunteers support this effort, and most goods and services will be donated. Janet Dold, the Director of the Monticello Chamber of Commerce states: “This event is the largest event in Monticello and has been growing every year.” Monticello mayor Ken Houston said it best: “This is the only event of its kind in the State of Indiana. What makes it even more spectacular is the simple fact that everything is free. Corporate and local donors underwrite all expense and provide all food, games and entertainment to not only the veterans but for the general public as well. This event certainly speaks volumes about patriotism and American values.” Page 34
