‘Where’ Marks 53 Years This year marks the 53rd anniversary of “Where” magazine, the official guide to Indiana’s Twin Lakes area. Since its inception, the magazine has had a dual purpose. For those looking to visit, “Where” is the guide for what to do and where to go. Whether you’re looking for family fun, adventure or something for empty nesters, “Where” can direct you on where to find it. For the people who live in the area, “Where” lets you know when and where things are happening and what’s new since last year. The Twin Lakes area — including White County and northeast Carroll County —is a unique area, a combination of small Midwestern towns, a resort area along lakes Shafer and Freeman, and Indiana Beach Amusement and Water Park. It has the draws of multiple antique stores, the White County Museum, the Monticello
farmer’s market and the many festivals that we’ve covered in this edition. It’s also a place for sportswomen and sportsmen, with fishing, boating, golfing, camping, hiking and bicycling. Monticello has now made Blue Water Beach park handicapped accessible, including new handicapped accessible kayak docks. For foodies, we have fine dining, traditional Midwestern fare and local breweries and wineries. The area is planning for the future, too. Monticello has begun work on a riverwalk project that will connect the downtown to the lakes’ and the Tippecanoe River’s shores. Chalmers and Monon are planning splash pad recreation attractions. Brookston is growing like a sunflower with new places to go. So we’re glad to see our readers again this year and look forward to telling you all about what’s new when you pick us up again next year.

Indiana Beach returns for 95th season with new look, attitude
If White County is the heart of Indiana, then Indiana Beach is what keeps it beating. Founder Earl Spackman first opened what would become one of Indiana’s first amusement parks as Ideal Beach in 1926. He started it as a place for locals to swim and sunbathe. However, in 1927, Spackman added a pair of toboggan slides, and then he and the Spackman family added roller coasters, water rides and more amusements over the years. After several ownerships over the past few years, a local man has taken it over. In April 2020, Gene Staples formed Indiana Beach Holdings LLC and claimed ownership of Indiana Beach. In the offseason, Staples has been busy making improvements to the park. The biggest is the addition of two new rides The first, known as the Polyp, has five arms with four cars attached to each. The arms move up and down as the ride operates in a circular motion. The ride originated at Kiddieland Park in Melrose Park, Ill. The second ride will be the park’s sixth coaster, a triple loop coaster designed and manufactured by Anton Schwarzkopf, a German engineer and a pioneer in steel looping coasters. To be more specific, it’s a coaster formerly known as La Quimera (The Chimera), which last operated at La Feria Chapultepec Magico (Magic Chapultepec Fair), a park in Mexico City. “ This triple loop, steel, sit-down coaster is the perfect fit to accompany our existing
Page 4 • WHERE magazine
lineup of amazing coasters,” Staples said. “We are continuously looking for ways to improve our guest experiences. One important way is through the addition of new rides and attractions, and we feel both of these rides are a great fit and complement to our existing lineup.” Indiana Beach also has a “sister” amusement park. Indiana Beach officials said March 25 that it has purchased Clementon Lake Park & Splash World, a 52-acre lakeside facility located in Clementon, N.J., for $2.37 million via an online auction. Like Indiana Beach in 2020, the 114-yerold New Jersey facility faced a permanent closure. This year, the Indiana Beach’s 95th season kicks off May 22. To learn more about Indiana Beach, including its food, lodging, ticket sales, season passes and other options, call (574) 583-4141 or visit www.indianabeach.com.

muskellunge According to Indiana Department of Natural Resources Biologist Thomas Bacula, species of fish excellent to catch are walleye, catfish, white bass and hybrid striped bass and can be found below the Norway and Oakdale dams. Other fishing depends on the spot, when a fish species spawning season is and the amount of water going through the dam. Bacula said the best tips for fishing depends upon what species one is fishing for. One good tip to catch a variety of fish is to “troll along drop offs with minnow-style baits.” Twin Lakes Fish and Game suggests going to local bait shops and asking what is biting and what people are using.

Walk, bike, hike through nature For those who want to do exploring and hiking or biking, White County has options for casual or more seasoned travelers. Monticello’s new Altherr Nature Park and its multi-use recreational trail open to bikes and walkers and joggers – any form of transportation that’s not motorized. The 16.5425 acres are located at 724 S. Main St., just north and across the street from City Park. A new nature center is being built, reconstructed from the house that was there, but the trails are ready for use. Further from the city and on the east outskirts of White County is the Panhandle Pathway, a rails-to-trails project that runs 21 miles from Winamac to near France Park. It’s a hiking and biking trail that follows the abandoned Pennsylvania Railroad line and crosses the Tippecanoe River and Mill Creek and through places like Star City, Thornhope, Royal Center and Kenneth. The Panhandle also has special rides, including the Moonlight Ride at 7 p.m. June 7 at the Winamac Depot and the Tippecanoe and Bicycles Too on 7 a.m. Aug. 3 at Winamac

Crooked Creek Trails offers horseback riding and more Crooked Creek Trails has been a family owned business since it began offering trail rides with 10 horses and two mules in 1989. More ground has been cleared since then and more horses brought in, and now Crooked Creek offers rides on about 260 acres of woods and has a campground and fishing. Located in the back woods of Cass County, Crooked Creek offers a chance to see wildlife while enjoying a relaxing horseback ride. Their trails push you through the wild woods, across the creeks, and up and down all the hills. Crooked Creek also offers services beside the traditional trail ride. They offer horse boarding, sell horses, give riding lessons, give demonstrations and provide any kind of equine-related instruction. The business also welcomes groups, from church groups and 4-H groups, to Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.

Tuesday night Cruisers enjoy new ‘home’ for classic car gatherings MONTICELLO – The Tuesday Night Cruisers are back again for its 15th summer of gatherings and showing their vehicles to admirers. The group of classic car collectors known for showing off their cool rides every Tuesday evening, from May to October each year in downtown Monticello for the past 14 years, had bounced between locations the previous two years for various reasons. In June 2020, the cruisers gathered for the first time since 2019 at The Sportsman Inn, just across the river in Carroll County at 12340 N. Upper Lakeshore Dr., Monticello. According to Ken Prieboy, chairman of the Tuesday Night Cruisers, that’ll continue to be the location of their Tuesday night gatherings. “We hated to leave the downtown area, but for this year anyway, it seemed to be our only choice,” he said. “We’ll see how things go this
year and make a decision on what to do for next year.” Last year, COVID-19 health emergency restrictions kept the group from gathering during the last four weeks. Compounding the issue was planned construction projects in the downtown area that closed some roads until November 2020. The group has used a small portion of West Broadway Street (between North Illinois and See CRUISERS, page 16

They moved to The Sportsman Inn in 2020. “Unfortunately, the city needed North Illinois Street for detour routes so we couldn’t close it like we normally do during our cruise nights,” Prieboy said. “They did offer us the use of the Century Link Building parking lot just north of the Knights of Columbus Building, but due to virus concerns they didn’t want us to start until July (2020).” Prieboy presented that information to the group. Many of the car owners, he said, travel into Monticello from all directions and would likely encounter delays because of the construction and detours. “They weren’t too excited about parking and sitting in a parking lot (since there is no shade),” he said. But the biggest issue, Prieboy said, was

having to wait until July. “That seemed like an eternity to a bunch that was ready to get their cars out the first of May,” he said. “We had to start looking elsewhere.” Enter The Sportsman Inn, who Prieboy said reached out and offered up their hospitality. “The (Tuesday Night Cruisers) felt it would be a great place to see how things work out,” he said. “There’s a lot of grassy areas to park in and (owner) George (Wade) is putting together some ideas to open up the banquet building … and offer food and beverages for us.” Prieboy said The Sportsman Inn plans to build Tuesday night’s up with live music and other specials. “(Wade) loves classic cars and is very excited to be a part of our cruise night,” he said. Tuesday Night Cruise events are at 5 p.m. until late October.

Tippecanoe Country Club rates in top 30 Hoosier State golf destinations By MICHAEL JOHNSON editor@thehj.com MONTICELLO — A White County golf course is included in a list of the top 30 public-access links destinations in the Hoosier State where golfers can pepper the pins in pursuit of pars, birdies and eagles. Tippecanoe County Club, just north of Monticello, was selected for the top 30 honor by Mike May, of Wellington, Fla. He’s a freelance golf writer and member of the Golf Writers Association of America. It and the other 29 courses are included in a recently completed booklet, “Hoosier State’s Top Golf Destinations: 30 of Indiana’s Finest Public-Access Golf Courses.” Upon completion, the golf guide/booklet will be posted on IndianaGolf.com and GoGolfandTravel.com. May said he actually played golf courses in Indiana to aid in his selections. Of Tippecanoe Country Club, he wrote: “From the first tee to the 18th green, Tippecanoe is meticulously groomed and is considered one of the finest layouts in the state of Indiana. “ Tippecanoe Country Club opened in 1920 as a nine-hole course. In 1963, the golf course was expanded to 18 holes by future world renown golf course architect Pete Dye, who designed the back nine and redesigned portions of the front nine — including all tees and greens. “Dye’s design remains as relevant today as it was back in the early 1960s,” May wrote. According to Tippecanoe County Club head golf professional John Alexander, the golf course’s biggest compliment comes from the high percentage
Page 18 • WHERE magazine
of annual return play. “I have many golfers from Indiana and the entire Midwest who come back to play our golf course every year,” Alexander said. “Our golf course features a few risk and reward holes, a number of old trees, and well-designed layout by Pete Dye. The presence of Lake Shafer on the first three holes gets your attention immediately. It’s just a beautiful golf course.” May wrote that Tippecanoe County Club “is as appropriate for a serious, competitive, single-digit handicap as it is for the casual, infrequent golfer,” despite its 18-hole, par72 layout. All told, the golf course measures 6,850 yards. “It’s somewhat long, but it’s not arduous,” May wrote. “This golf course opens for play as soon as weather permits in the spring, usually mid-to-late March and remains open until mid-to-late November. The Tippecanoe Country Club is a popular facility to stage tournaments, charitable fund-raisers, and corporate outings.” Another area course included in the top 30 was Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex (Kampen and Ackerman-Allen courses) at Purdue University in West Lafayette.

Boating safety a must on the water Summertime means fun on the water for most of us Be it fishing, skiing, tubing or just cruising and relaxing, many Hoosiers find being on the water a great way to relax and enjoy being outside. If you are one of them, then you have undoubtedly noticed that, regardless of any impoundment you are on in north-central Indiana, unless it is one with a horsepower or speed restriction, our waterways are generally quite congested. This is especially true on weekends and holidays. This doesn’t mean that you can’t spend an enjoyable day on the water. In fact, at times it can add to the fun as you make your way into certain coves or areas where many boats tie up to hang out. What it does mean is that you must stay vigilant at all times and practice both boater’s etiquette and common sense. For starters, remember the “rules of the road.” It’s that simple. Just as you would on the street, always drive on the right side of the lake. What if the lake is pretty empty? While that may give you a little more leeway, it can get tricky when other boats do appear. When passing another boat, do so with as much space as possible between you and said boat while staying in a safe depth of water and without getting into other boat traffic. Reduce your speed if necessary to remain safe. This is especially true if there are passengers and other boats around. Likewise, slow down if another boat is passing you. This is safer for both of you. The faster you are going, the faster the other boat must go to get around you. For fishermen in the group, never cut off another fisherman. Always keep an eye out when motoring past docks or piers or
along the shoreline. A lot of the time, people will be fishing from them and will have lines cast out. Be sure to give them room and respect their right to fish. Remember, a boat is a motorized vehicle; therefore operating one under the influence of alcohol is not only illegal, but not a safe choice. If you choose to consume an alcoholic beverage, that is fine, just be sure to have a designated driver. There must be enough life jackets on board the vessel for everyone on the boat. Cushion or similar floatation devices are not a legal substitute for a life jacket. If your boat has a kill switch, use it. When launching your boat at the ramp, don’t be “that” person who isn’t ready when it is their time to drop their boat in. Have everything you can have done ahead of time done so that when you approach the ramp you can get your boat launched and get out of the way as quickly as possible. The ramp is not the place for prepping your boat. Lastly, avoid “road rage” while on the water. You are bound to encounter other boaters on occasion who either do not exhibit courtesy or respect the law. Losing your cool will only lead to problems. Enjoy the remaining summer days out on the water of your local waterway. Just be sure to drive defensively, follow the law and use common courtesy when you do.
