Foreword by the Chairperson
In the past year, the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE ) has made remarkable achievements in nurturing future leaders. With the core mission of “Empowering Future Leaders for a Diverse Talent Pool,” we have been relentlessly exploring the forefront of innovative education, committed to providing students with a diverse platform to shine on the 21st century stage. During the year, we successfully held the Young STEAM Talent Award, which not only showcased students’ technical abilities but also sparked their innovative thinking. This competition was widely received by students of the city who were eager to demonstrate their impressive solutions with application of cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and blockchain. This not only ignited their passion for technology but also taught them social responsibility and problem-solving skills. We firmly believe that innovation springs from diversity. The HKAGE has dedicated itself to building an inclusive learning environment. Our curriculum covers knowledge not only on technology but also on humanities, arts, and social sciences, aiming to cultivate students’ comprehensive competence. We encourage students to apply technology in different fields, fostering interdisciplinary perspectives – a critical aptitude for 21st century leaders.

Gifted Figurines Glowing with Broader Gifted Spectrum
Cultivating Diverse, Inclusive, and Socially-conscious Future Leaders The HKAGE held its inaugural Academy Awards for the Gifted (Ceremony) this year, celebrating the achievements of its outstanding students and alumni. The grand event encompassed the Outstanding Student Awards, the recognition of the graduates of the Leadership Training Programme, and the HK AGE’s annual graduation. Each winner of the Outstanding Student Awards was presented with a golden statuette ( Golden Figurine), modelled after the HKAGE’s mascot, GiGi, to honour the recipients’ perseverance and accomplishments along their learning journey at the HKAGE. The Ceremony, on the one hand, illustrated the HKAGE’s vision and key focuses for the year; on the other hand, it reflected the ever-expanding spectrum of our gifted talent pool. By modelling an integrative and realistic social environment through the intaking of students from different backgrounds with different talents and personalities, the HKAGE aims to enhance students’ communication and collaboration skills, empowering them to contribute their unique strengths in the diverse societal landscape in the future. The first group to take the stage were the graduates of the Leadership Training Programme. While they may not be high academic achievers, many were nominated by school principals due to their exceptional leadership potential, a crucial skill in the 21st century. Innotech, another factor that will undoubtedly shape the world’s development, was also highlighted at the Ceremony. Among the over 50 Gifted Star Awardees receiving the Golden Figurine, several students with tremendous potential in STEAM were the winners of the 1st Young STEAM Talent Award. This “people-oriented” competition, jointly organised by the HKAGE, Centum Charitas Foundation, and the Council of the Hong Kong
Laureate Forum, emphasises the commitment of the contestants to use their STEAM competency to benefit society. The HK AGE hopes to uncover more talents through this competition and nurture them to become the technological leaders of tomorrow. The final highlight was the Outstanding Graduate Award and the Outstanding Alumnus Award. T he recipients, SUEN Ming To Tiffany and WONG Shin Tung respectively, are both committed to the pursuit of knowledge with a caring heart for the community, setting a role model to their juniors. Tiffany, whose story was covered last year, is a science enthusiast caring about the environment, while Shin Tung, after graduation, actively gives back to the HKAGE and society through a non-profit organisation founded by her. Each student and alumnus/alumna receiving an award on stage embodies the essence of gifted education, emphasising not only advanced knowledge and training but also the merit of whole person development, addressing unique learning needs, and instilling positive, sociallyconscious values. Moving forward, the HKAGE will continue to broaden the gifted spectrum by expanding its admission channels, optimising the Principal’s Nomination mechanism, and exploring more competitions that showcase diverse talents. This will allow gifted students to grow together in an inclusive learning environment, equipping them to become future leaders who can leverage their strengths to benefit society and shine like the Golden Figurine on the global stage.

Clarisse POON won the Young STEAM Talent of the Year at the inaugural Young STEAM Talent Award in S3

Clarisse POON, studying in S4, is a passionate and creative student who has demonstrated exceptional talent in the field of technological innovation. She won the inaugural Young STEAM Talent Award ( YSTA) for her artificial intelligence medication verification software, “MediSafe”, earning the Young STEAM Talent of the Year Award. With a strong interest in biotechnology, she aspires to contribute her talents to biotechnological research in future for the benefit of society. Clarisse’s passion for STEAM began in P5, and this enthusiasm has accompanied her through numerous successful participations in various innovation competitions. Her award-winning software, “MediSafe”, effectively reduces the chances of prescription errors by verifying patient and medication information. Last year, she also designed a pair of warning insoles called “HikeSafe” for hikers. Both initiatives emphasise safety, highlighting her attention to detail and concern for the well-being of others.

Clarisse and teammate introduce their HikeSafe to visitors
Clarisse states, “Whether it’s a research project or an innovative invention, the goal is to enhance the quality of life through technology.” Much of her inspiration for innovation comes from everyday life. As a child, she was reluctant to eat raw vegetables; however, after learning from her parents that uncooked vegetables retain more nutrients, she embarked on a study of the nutritional changes that occur with different cooking methods. Recently, after encountering traffic congestion on her way to school, she began to conceptualise a research project aiming at alleviating tunnel traffic jams. These examples demonstrate how details of her daily life, including clothing, food, and transportation, serve as incubators for her innovative ideas.
Clarisse introduces the functions of her award-winning innovation, “MediSafe”
In addition to her focus on research, Clarisse possesses a more macro perspective on the broader development of innovation and technology. She believes that for technological research to truly benefit society, relevant policies must be established to support it. As a student, she actively participates in drafting the Civic Policy Address, where she applies her knowledge to provide suggestions to the government and various sectors of society, hoping to support and promote the long-term development of local innotech.
Clarisse’s motto is “Dream Big, Think Small.” She firmly believes that by paying attention to small things around her—ranging from daily trivialities to societal issues—she can observe the needs of different individuals and subsequently conduct relevant research and innovation to improve people’s lives. After winning the Young STEAM Talent of the Year Award, Clarisse hopes to further enhance “MediSafe” into a more comprehensive and refined platform under the guidance of the mentor she will be matched with through the YSTA.

At the Grand Final of the 1st Young STEAM Talent Award ( YSTA), a then Grade 11 student proudly demonstrated his biomechanically informed rehabilitation glove to visitors, eagerly explaining its operational principles. He is Prakhar MISHRA, an Indian boy growing up in Hong Kong and one of the ten finalists of the YSTA.
Talented and passionate about AI and machine learning, Prakhar’s analytical mindset was sparked early on before the onset of his love for mathematics and coding. “When I was five, my grandfather introduced me to chess, igniting my interest in the fascinating game,” he recalls. This exposure to strategic thinking paved the way for his later explorations in mathematics and coding, planting the seed of a passion for problem-solving that continues to drive his ambitions.
At just ten years old, Prakhar began his commitment to social responsibility through his involvement with the NGO Usha Kiran in his home country, India, which offered after-school education to underprivileged children with limited resources. Inspired by the students he met during a visit, young Prakhar volunteered to develop an e-library management software using his coding skills for the NGO. This early involvement marked the start of his journey to use his talents for the greater good.

During subsequent visits to his home country, Prakhar was inspired by a family friend’s health needs and conceived the idea for his awardwinning rehabilitation glove. “Witnessing how people struggled to track and measure rehabilitation progress opened my eyes to the challenges faced by patients in physical therapy,” he explains. The desire to make a tangible impact again motivated Prakhar to create a solution using his innovative and technical skills. Beyond academics, Prakhar is a sports enthusiast who actively participates in cricket, basketball, football, and hockey, among others. These activities not only enhance his physical and mental wellness but also develop his leadership qualities. As captain of his school’s U16 Basketball Team, Athletics Team, and Senior Hockey Team, Prakhar is committed to helping his teammates excel. Prakhar’s journey to becoming an innovative leader also includes valuable experiences in cross-cultural collaboration. He recalls a memorable experience with his school’s Debate Team: “We frequently engage in group debates, and having students from diverse cultural backgrounds allows us to benefit from a wide range of perspectives,” he says. Besides strengthening Prakhar’s teamwork abilities, this experience prepared him for a globalised world where diversity is valued as a catalyst for enriching perspectives and fostering meaningful ideas. As a YSTA award winner, Prakhar will be matched with a mentor based on his research needs.
Chloe believes that “serving the community with what you have learnt” is akin to spreading joy, hope, and energy. For her, it is both an honour and a source of happiness. One unforgettable experience was obtained when she was leading her school’s social services team to visit elderly residents in the community. During the visit, she listened to an elderly lady’s struggles living alone in a remote rural area. This experience filled Chloe with gratitude for the comfortable life she enjoys and inspired her to apply her knowledge to help those in need. Last year, Chloe participated in the STEAM Expo organised by her school, where she and her teammates applied their technological knowledge to design a special pair of sports shoes that help visually impaired individuals detect obstacles within 50 centimetres, thus reducing the risk of accidents. This design ultimately became one of the top five best designs in the Expo. Chloe is thankful for the practical leadership skills she has learnt in the Programme, including “prioritisation”, “emotional management”, and “leveraging the strengths of team members”. She has been able to apply these skills in various activities. For instance, during a group activity, when disagreements arose and tensions escalated among her teammates, young Chloe proactively suggested taking a break from the chaos. She encouraged the team members to share their viewpoints one by one and review the suggestions before synthesising them into the best possible solution. In another workshop, when Chloe noticed her teammates feeling anxious about their performance in a competition, she applied the emotional management techniques she had learnt earlier to soothe everyone. The team then prioritised tasks and placed less emphasis on competition results. With Chloe’s encouragement, they shifted their focus to doing their best and enjoying the learning process.
Empowered with the leadership skills and practical experience gained from the HKAGE, Chloe feels more confident in her leadership role at school. She has learnt the importance of listening to others, empathising, and offering timely suggestions to help the team move forward together. Looking ahead, she hopes to combine her leadership skills with scientific knowledge to lead a team in developing research projects that benefit society.

Developing the Vision from Leaders
CHAN Man To serving as an emcee for the Academy Awards for the Gifted 2024
At the inaugural Academy Awards for the Gifted, a young boy named CHAN Man To was busy serving as an emcee one moment and dashing across the stage to receive a silver award for the Leadership Training Programme the next. This then S4 boy was among the first group of students who joined the HKAGE through the Principal’s Nomination and got enrolled in the Leadership Training Programme, because of their outstanding leadership potential.
“Leadership training has broadened my vision. Through interacting with students from diverse backgrounds, I gained a deeper understanding of various aspects of society. I learnt to appreciate different viewpoints with empathy and a more open mind, which would greatly benefit my future development”, Man To reflected on the programme. The term “vision” frequently appeared in his comments, indicating his aspirations for what it means to be a “leader”. Coming from a grassroots family, Man To’s parents, with limited education, have their greatest wish that their son would study hard and “not be looked down upon by others”. In return, Man To’s desire was to “gain knowledge to give back” to his parents. Hence, he excels academically and takes on roles such as chairman of the student union, club president, and flag-raising team captain in school. He also actively participates in numerous leadership training programmes and voluntary work outside of school to expand his network and horizons.

Man To was excited to share his joy of attaining the silver award of the Leadership Training Programme with Ms SIN Mei Ying, the teacher who nominated him to join the HKAGE
Before joining the HKAGE, Man To had already begun engaging deeply with the community. To develop an educational app aimed at assisting children with special education needs, he conducted extensive research. This included interviewing parent groups on Facebook and visiting professionals and organisations. Through these firsthand interactions, he gained a genuine understanding of societal realities, moving beyond media portrayals.
The learning experiences at the HKAGE has brought him several unexpected rewards. He has met many professionals from various industries, learnt new skills, attended university lectures, participated in talks featuring prominent figures, and served as an emcee for an HKAGE signature event. Man To found joy in these experiences, stating, “Being in this diverse environment taught me how to collaborate with people of different personalities and traits, and to understand others’ viewpoints while striving to overcome communication barriers.” The insights gained from guest talks further enlightened his worldview. For example, sharing from medical guru Professor LO Yuk Ming Dennis and one of the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia, Mr YANG Sze Ngai, taught him innovative thinking and problem-solving skills. He believes, “Regardless of which field I pursue in the future, these skills will be extremely helpful.”

Shin Tung has also served on the Academic Programme Development Committee at the HKAGE, participating actively and contributing to various initiatives. She has shared with gifted students at the HKAGE her journey of transforming personal aspirations into a successful career. When establishing Kusala Education, she applied the knowledge and skills she had acquired from the HKAGE’s student programmes, particularly in leadership training. This foundation has enabled her to organise engagement activities in diverse areas for participants in Kusala Education, like stress-relief gardening groups and mindfulness violin classes, all aimed at helping individuals achieve balance in their physical and mental well-being. Among the many activities she has organised, the one that left the deepest impression on Shin Tung was teaching mindfulness through music at a centre for the hearing impaired. Despite initial doubts about the music sensitivity of the deaf, she discovered that those who are hard of hearing can “experience” music through other physical senses. This experience reinforced her belief that open communication can break down barriers. She realised that true inclusion comes from the heart: when we choose to act with wholesome skilfulness, happiness naturally follows. As someone with experience, Shin Tung has noticed that while gifted students excel in cognitive skills, they often struggle with stress management. She aims to encourage her younger peers to explore their inner needs through the humanities and the arts. While pursuing knowledge is important, taking care of emotional well-being is just as vital. With nearly nine years of mindfulness experience, Shin Tung looks forward to more opportunities to help individuals from diverse backgrounds discover their own methods of stress relief and pathways to happiness.
Shin Tung organised the “Half Baked Buddies” 50+ Mind, Body, and Soul Workshop and Concert to help elderly individuals appreciate and learn about different musical instruments
