Programme Notes

The organ, often referred to as “the king of Instruments”, has regularly been paired with brass, especially in more recent centuries. The brilliance and volume of brass instruments not only complement the organ, but also provide infinite opportunities for composers (and arrangers) to create exciting dialogue between the instruments.
Canzon Septimi Toni No 2
The Venetian composer and organist Giovanni Gabrieli started serving at the prestigious St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice in 1585. His first collection of motets and canzoni, Sacrae Symphoniae, from 1597 was so influential that it attracted composers from all over Europe (especially Germany) to study in Venice. Canzon [per sonar] septimi toni à 8, Ch.172 (“Canzon
in the Seventh Mode for eight parts”) is one masterpiece that highlights St. Mark’s polychoral tradition. Originally written for two four-part choirs of instruments, it is now arranged for brass quintet and organ, with the quintet and organ acting as two choirs, creating exciting dialogue between them.
Overture from Music for the Royal Fireworks
It is probably too romantic to imagine that there was an uninterrupted lineage of composers since the time of those German composers who went to Gabrieli, all the way up to George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). But Handel’s famous outdoor music for wind instruments, Music for the Royal Fireworks HWV351, coincidentally recalls the antiphonal treatments of the Venetian polychoral

tradition, especially in the Overture. Starting with a slow introduction full of dotted rhythms in a French overture, it is followed by the lively allegro (briefly interrupted by a short lentement session). The entire suite was originally scored for 24 oboes, 12 bassoons, a contrabassoon, nine natural trumpets, nine natural horns, three pairs of kettledrums and a side drum. Handel later rewrote it for full orchestra a month later, but regardless of the instrumentation, the composer was generous in creating a dialogue between different groups of instruments. It was unfortunate that the fireworks display did not go as well as Handel’s music: a pavilion and a lady’s clothes were all set on fire that rainy night.
Concerto in F Major, The Cuckoo and the Nightingale, HWV 295
Ten years before the Royal Fireworks, in the King’s Theatre in the Haymarket in London, Handel premiered his oratorio Israel in Egypt. (He completed the entire oratorio in one month in 1739.) The Organ Concerto in F Major, HWV295 was also premiered as an interlude for this performance. The concerto is nicknamed The Cuckoo and the Nightingale, as Handel utilised motifs of the birds’ songs in the second movement. Handel was a virtuosic organist and the solo writing displays his talent not only as a composer, but also as an organist.

"Procession of the Nobles" from Mlada
The grandeur of royalty is also on display in Mlada, an opera-ballet by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The plot is based on an imaginary story about the Slavic people on the shores of the Baltic in the 9th to 10th century. This half opera, half ballet production is extremely complex: the title role is a silent role to be danced, but the libretto is incredibly detailed. The second act of the opera-ballet opens with a midsummer festive celebration. And "Procession of the Nobles" begins with a bold brass introduction, followed by processional music. The middle section deals with the festivity and a brief moment of lyricism before returning to rousing marching music."Procession of the Nobles" also provides the
music for the final part of the suite, containing excerpts of the opera-ballet.
Blue Pavilion
Hong Kong-born British composer Dani Howard (b. 1993) studied composition with Jonathan Cole at the Royal College of Music as a Rose Williams Scholar. Her Blue Pavilion was commissioned by the Royal Academy of Arts, inspired by an installation by Pezo von Ellrichshausen, an art and architecture studio founded by Mauricio Pezo and Sofia von Ellrichshausen. This mainly timber installation is made up of a small elevated room supported by four massive columns, with a spiral stairwell in each column giving access to the elevated box. The installation is simple and unadorned, and Howard’s piece for brass quintet was inspired by a similar logic: “Very simple materials can be constructed in a particular way in order to create something of great complexity and beauty.”

Five Dances for Organ
American organist and composer
Calvin Hampton (1938-84) explored many different idioms in his compositions, such as rock, gospel hymns, synthesisers and quarter tones, to name a few. He also contributed a vast amount of liturgical music, including some organ solo pieces. In 1981, Hampton received an invitation to compose an anthem for choir and organ, for the dedication of the new organ at Park Avenue Christian Church in New York City. Though Hampton gladly accepted the invitation, he also wanted to write a suite of five movements inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s Five Easy Pieces for Piano Duet, in which an ostinato rhythm is employed in each movement to support a simple melody. Hampton eventually got two invitations and Five Dances was premiered at the church in 1982 by David Higgs (who was also a teacher of tonight’s organist, Anne Lam). The third movement "Those Americans" begins with a gentle lilting figure, with the dance developing with more excitement in the middle section before returning to an opening motif. Both the ostinato figure and melody in the last movement "Everyone Dance" have much more urgency. The ostinato grows from a simple pair of a third into full chords, bringing the dance to a grand conclusion.
Morning Music
Also an organist-composer, Daniel Pinkham studied with Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, Arthur Honnegger and Nadia Boulanger. He was the organist at King’s Chapel in Boston for 42 years. This long tenure led to numerous compositions for religious occasions. In 1990, he was named Composer of the Year by the American Guild of Organists. Pinkham wrote his Morning Music as a tribute to Paul Hindemith in 1995, which marked the centenary of Hindemith’s birth. Pinkham also related his piece to Hindemith’s Morgenmusik, a commissioned work for brass quartet, hence the title. Pinkham was asked to write a “light-hearted work about 10 minutes long, easy to rehearse, accessible to a wide variety of audiences and ending with a
‘toe-tapper’.” Morning Music has five movements, namely “Reveille” (the bugle calls that wake soldiers up at sunrise), “Song”, “Sports”, “Reflection” and “March”. The “March” should get the audience’s toes tapping!
Flourishes
Carlyle Sharpe (b.1965) is currently the Professor of Music in Composition and Theory at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. His works have won numerous American Guild of Organists awards for composition. Flourishes was commissioned by Drury University on the occasion of the inauguration of its 15th president in 2005. The piece begins with a toccata-like organ passage, quickly answered by the brass quintet. It then develops into a section full of syncopation. A brief episode of a declamatory melody leads to the return of the toccata and syncopated motifs. The piece ends with an exciting dialogue between organ and brass, bringing the programme to an exuberant conclusion.

A Conversation with Anne Lam

Organ and brass may seem like an unlikely combination for music lovers, but organ virtuoso Anne Lam is here to change the scene. Joined by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra Brass Quintet, Lam will take the audience on a musical journey through time at the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival. The Joy of Brass and Organ programme is sure to resonate with music lovers of all ages.
The programme has a wide selection of music from Baroque and Renaissance to modern compositions. How did you come up with such a diverse programme?
Lam: Whenever people think of brass or the organ, people often associate them with something merely solemn, loud or heavy. Therefore, one of the primary goals we want to achieve with this performance is to present the versatility of these instruments by selecting music of different styles and periods. For example, in Handel’s The Cuckoo and the Nightingale, you can hear the organ imitating the sound of the cuckoo, or the way the brass quintet replaces the original orchestral accompaniment. We want to thoroughly explore the musical possibilities and introduce these approachable pieces to the audience.
Can you elaborate on your collaboration with Hong Kong Phil Brass Quintet?
Lam: This is a new experience
for the performers and the audience alike. It’s less common for brass players to collaborate with an organist, as only a few composers write specifically for organ and brass, so watch out for the pieces written by Hampton, Pinkham and Sharpe in the programme.
To best interpret music from its historical period, we have adopted techniques specific to the context of each piece. For example, as early music is more articulated, we stay true to its style and are less legato in our playing. This concert might surprise audience members who expect to be “blasted” by these loud instruments.
Handel’s Overture from Music for the Royal Fireworks is arranged by one of your students, Carlos Li. Can you tell us more about this arrangement?
Lam: Carlos was a student of mine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and has a comprehensive background in music. During his studies, he was already a talented student who won numerous competitions, and had a profound interest in composing and transcription. I have always wanted to feature him in local productions. The organ is one of the most complex instruments and is made up of many parts, such as its manual, pedal board and stop controls. Carlos has the advantage of knowing the mechanics of the instrument
and, as an organist with experience in transcription, he is the perfect person to rearrange the orchestral accompaniment for Handel’s Overture.
What pieces do you enjoy the most? Do you have any personal favourites?
Lam: I like Calvin Hampton’s Five Dances for Organ the most, as he is one of my favourite composers who manages to utilise the instrument fully. This piece has a uniquely American style and rhythm, with an explosion of musical elements which reflects his intellectual creativity and the playfulness in his compositions.
I am also satisfied with the arrangement of the programme as the last three pieces—Five Dances for Organ, Morning Music and Flourishes—are all composed by American composers. They remind me of my time in the US, as I listened to organ and brass quintet performances in churches during Christmas and soaked in the festive and merry atmosphere, and they will bring the performance to a powerful end.
