第五十一屆香港藝術節隆重舉行,可 喜可賀。
逾半個世紀以來,藝術節每年均呈獻 多姿多彩的文藝節目,由古典音樂、 歌劇、戲劇,以至舞蹈、多媒體項 目等,包羅萬有,令觀眾大飽眼福。
今屆藝術節以《收音機與茱麗葉》及 《春之祭》芭蕾舞表演揭開序幕,兩 齣經典作品經由著名編舞家愛德華· 克魯格重新編排,加上斯洛文尼亞 國家歌劇院馬里博爾芭蕾舞團傾力演 出,萬眾矚目;約五星期後,歐洲頂 尖交響樂團—德國班貝格交響樂團將 登台獻技,為今年藝術節畫上圓滿句 號。其間上演的焦點節目還有: 國 際星級女高音安娜·涅翠柯與丈夫男 高音尤西夫·伊瓦佐夫聯袂表演的音 樂會;由藝術家威廉·肯特里奇精心 製作、南非木偶劇團和比利時里切卡 爾古樂團奇妙演繹的蒙特威爾第歌劇 《尤利西斯歸鄉記》;由芭蕾天后娜塔 麗亞·奧斯波娃領銜主演的芭蕾巨 星之《「世」不可擋》及傳奇舞姬之 《趾尖》;以及國際鋼琴大賽冠軍劉曉 禹的演奏會。
藝術節向來十分重視本地演藝人才, 致力讓他們一展才華。今屆藝術節亦 會上演多個粵劇節目,包括《竹林愛 傳奇》、「毛俊輝.粵劇情」、《畫皮》 (精新版),以及「短篇粵劇—戲說 八德」; 並帶來其他本地作品,包括 《飯戲攻心》踏台版、《末戀.無愛合 約》、舞蹈歌劇《兩生花》等等,定 必精彩萬分,不容錯過。
大眾還可通過藝術節,體驗繽紛的藝 術魅力。法國食蟻獸沉浸式藝術工作 室創作的《第一步》,會邀請觀眾互 動共舞;在大館舉行的一系列免費藝 術科技節目,以及「無限亮」計劃, 亦會讓公眾參與其中。「無限亮」計 劃由本地和海外不同能力的藝術家擔 綱演出,鼓勵青少年衝破界限,探索

I would like to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 51st edition.
For more than half a century now, the Arts Festival has enthralled audiences with a superb annual programme of arts and culture performances embracing classical music and opera, theatre, dance, multimedia and a great deal more.
This year’s Arts Festival programme opens with the Slovene National Theatre Maribor’s ballet performances of Radio and Juliet and Le Sacre du Printemps, two classics re-imagined by celebrated choreographer Edward Clug. It closes, nearly five weeks later, with a concert by Germany’s Bamberg Symphony, one of Europe’s greatest orchestras. Other highlights include Anna Netrebko, one of the world’s great sopranos, performing with her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov; artist William Kentridge’s remarkable production of Monteverdi’s opera, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse, brought to life by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company and Belgium’s Ricercar Consort periodinstrument ensemble; Ballet Superstars’ Force of Nature and Legendary Ballerina

in Two Feet featuring supreme ballerina Natalia Osipova; and concerts by the international award-winning piano virtuoso Bruce Liu.
As always, the Festival shines a spotlight on standout artists from Hong Kong. This year’s Cantonese opera offerings include Love in the Bamboo Grove, Cantonese Opera Classics Circa 2023, The Painted Skin (Refined Edition) and Virtues and Morality—Four Cantonese Operas. Local productions including Table For Six on Stage, Loveless Romance and Love Streams are sure to be among this year’s Festival highlights.
Several programmes invite public participation as well, including the First Steps participatory dance performances staged by France’s Tamanoir Immersive Studio, as well as Tai Kwun’s free series of arts tech productions and the Festival’s No Limits programme, led by local and international artists of varying abilities. No Limits’ offerings emphasise youth exploration, as does the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival with its school tours, preperformance workshops and special programming. And then there is the Festival PLUS creative activities that bring artists and audiences together in communities throughout Hong Kong.
I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for its inspired commitment to the arts and to Hong Kong’s continuing rise as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. My thanks, as well, to the Festival’s many generous sponsors and donors.

I am delighted to welcome you to the 51st edition of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. As the city recovers from the disruption of the pandemic, the Festival is returning with an array of live performances featuring top-notch artists from Hong Kong and across the world. Despite the boundless possibilities offered by the internet, attending performances in person remains an irreplaceable experience. It gives me great pleasure to share this collective experience with you today.
The Festival is made possible by the generosity of our supporters.
I wish to thank the HKSAR Government, via the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, for the annual subvention which underpins our long-standing work. On behalf of the Festival team, I would like to extend to you a heartfelt welcome to the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival.
Our theme this year, “Coming Back, Moving Forward”, represents our determination to come back in full force after several years of uncertainties caused by the pandemic. After five decades of hard work and dedication, the Festival has established itself as a premier arts event in the region and an important international arts festival. We are honoured to carry this legacy forward, while advancing our multifaceted work to stay relevant in the present. In the 51st edition, we discover creative voices through new renditions of masterpieces, cross-disciplinary collaborations and commissioned productions— all of which showcase the breadth and endless possibilities of the performing arts, taking us one step
forward in this journey of exploration. Beyond exceptional performances, we are also offering a series of auxiliary PLUS programmes to enhance audience engagement and provide deeper insights into our programmes. Our strong commitment to arts education is seen in the extensive outreach activities aimed at inspiring the younger generation of Hong Kong through promoting quality arts.

香港藝術節於 1973 年正式揭幕,是國際藝壇中重要的文化 盛事,於每年 2、 3 月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地及國際藝術家 的演出,以及舉辦多元化的「加料」和教育活動,致力豐 富香港的文化生活。
香港藝術節 是一所非牟利機構,2022/ 23 財政年度預計收
入(包括第 51 屆香港藝術節及 2023 年「無限亮」)約港 幣一億五千萬,當中香港特區政府的年度撥款佔總收入約 18%,另外約 24%需來自票房收入,約 43%則需依賴來自 各大企業、熱心人士和慈善基金會的贊助和捐款。預計餘 下的約 15%則來自其他收入,包括政府針對捐款和贊助收 入而提供的配對資助。

The HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.
The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total estimated income for FY2022/23 (including the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2023 “No Limits”) is approximately HK$150 million. Current Government annual funding accounts for around 18% of the Festival's total income. Around 24% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 43% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 15% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. The HKAF has presented top international artists and ensembles across multiple genres, such as*:

The HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 250 local productions across genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include The Plague, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family – A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.
The HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina

Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake co-commissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera.
The HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 30 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 810,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year.
The HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.
The HKAF actively promotes inclusiveness and understanding via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.
The HKAF officially launched the Hong Kong Arts Festival Foundation in 2022 to provide greater financial security and longterm sustainability for the Festival. Donations to the Foundation will help the Festival to present large-scale projects which its annual budget cannot cater for. (2023

The Book of Water is an innovative chamber music theatre piece by composer, film and theatre director, and librettist Michel van der Aa for string quartet, actor and video. The work is an updated version of the novella Man in the Holocene (Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän) by Swiss author Max Frisch. Special technology is being developed for this work, created as an international co-production.

故事大綱
《水之書》的中心人物是一位 正在經歷記憶衰退的 73 歲鰥 夫——蓋沙。一連幾日的極端天 氣,讓蓋沙被困家中,與世界 徹底隔絕。然而,正在逐漸崩 塌的不僅僅是他的記憶—— 鄉 郊的連場暴雨帶來洪水與山泥 傾瀉,令他身邊原本挺立的一 切事物也開始土崩瓦解。
在《水之書》中,我們看到一 個人是如何逐漸被侵蝕的,而 這種侵蝕既存在於自然中,也 存在於內心裏,令人不勝唏 噓。蓋沙竭盡全力,想最後一
次把一切釐清,好為自己與人 類文明尋找意義。他瘋狂地從 百科全書、聖經等典籍中剪下 一段段字句,想要盡可能地抓 住更多知識,以掌控自己的人
生。他最感興趣的主題是水, 以及人類在地球歷史中扮演的 角色。愈來愈多的知識,慢慢 堆積成雜亂、矛盾的想法。周 圍的自然環境開始支離破碎, 然而蓋沙把已知事實當作唯一 信念,相信「無記憶便無知 識」,因此他最怕的就是喪失
記憶。蓋沙讀到某些城市建於 水上,就想,上漲的水是否要 收回自己的失地,以此來迫使 人類清醒。

Synopsis
The Book of Water revolves around the character Geiser, a widower of 73 who is struggling with memory loss. Extreme weather conditions have confined Geiser to his home, completely isolating him from the outside world. It is not only Geiser’s memory that is steadily deteriorating; his surroundings are also literally crumbling away due to the heavy rain pelting the countryside, which is causing flooding and landslides.
The Book of Water paints a chilling portrait of a man who has become a victim of erosion, both of nature and within himself. He strains with all his might to achieve clarity, just one last time, so that he can make sense of himself and civilisation. He frenetically tries to maintain control by holding onto as much knowledge as he can, in the form of a huge collection of clippings from books, encyclopaedias and the Bible. He is mainly interested in water and the role of humans in the history of the earth. His body of knowledge turns into one big jumble of incoherent ideas. While the natural world around him seems to be falling apart, Geiser puts all his faith into known facts; “no knowledge without memory”. Losing his memory is what he fears the most. Geiser reads about cities built on water and wonders if the water is coming to reclaim what it owns, forcing humankind to become more lucid.
He thinks about how time is created by water, about the essence of water (“one oxygen atom bonded to two hydrogen atoms, this simple trinity is the source of all beauty and complexity”), which melds with the complexity of Geiser’s thoughts. There are clippings about the human creation story (“the spirit of God floated over the waters”/”would God exist if there were someday no human brain ever again that cannot imagine a creation without a creator”), about the origins of water and sound, the groundtone of the world, devoid of meaning, and the “icicles like organ pipes”, the precursors of musical harmony.
His daughter (the soprano, who also plays her mother in a double role, and whose voice we hear occasionally) has been trying to reach him by telephone for days, and she comes to see him. His last clipping is a description of the symptoms of a stroke.

在《水之書》中,米歇爾.梵 德阿將舞台空間與視覺影像進 一步延伸融合。舞台上的投影 媒介(紗簾)也在錄像中有所 運用。特別是在蓋沙腦出血 後,一模一樣的紗簾軌道突然 出現在影片中。屬於台上演員 與樂手的物理空間,一下子被 拉入了錄像世界。而當原本 寫實的錄像世界瞬間變得戲劇 化,我們亦開始質疑蓋沙的精 神狀態。
本劇台詞由台上唯一演員西 門.韋斯特道出,而錄像投 影則講述了故事的另一部分。 同樣位於舞台上的弦樂四重奏 是場景中不可分割的部分。此 外,台上掛有一組紗簾,將舞 台及演員與樂手間分隔成不同 空間,這些平展的紗簾充當了

In The Book of Water, Michel van der Aa went a step further in blending and extending the stage space and film. The onstage projection materials (curtains) are also used in the film. Notably, right after Geiser’s haemorrhage, the same curtain rails suddenly appear in the film; the physical world of the stage actor and musicians is drawn into the film world. The film world, which began realistically, suddenly becomes theatrical at the point we start to have our doubts about Geiser’s mental state.
The text is spoken on stage by the actor (Samuel West), and parts of the story are projected in the form of video images. The string quartet on stage is an integral part of the mise-enscène. The video images are projected on tautly stretched curtains hung around and in between the players (actor and musicians). The actor can change the scenery by moving the curtains as the narrative progresses. The video element consists of pre-recorded images of the main character Geiser (Timothy West), his daughter and other villagers. The characters in the video images react to the on-stage actor and musicians and vice versa, creating an interaction with the mise-en-scène.
The Book of Water places the themes of Frisch’s book in a larger and topical Weltanschauung (view of the world). The flooding that forces
the main character to reinvent himself is of global urgency and relevance today. It has inspired the creators of The Book of Water to depict a new reality using language, music and the most advanced technology.
The audience witnesses two processes of erosion and it is up to us to draw parallels with today’s world. Geiser was able to cling to his memories and his knowledge for years, but the boundaries of his identity are becoming fluid. He is on the verge of disintegrating and being absorbed into what was once his perception of the world. Just as how the father character in van der Aa’s film opera Upload was “in transit” to a digital reality, the line between reality and imagined reality has blurred for Geiser. It is not always clear to us as spectators whether Geiser’s utterances refer to his inner world or to the world outside his door. What we see on stage changes along with the changing environment that is affecting Geiser. This affects the actor and on-stage musicians, and is also audible in the music itself. Like the audience, those on stage, particularly Geiser, are having to cope with a changing environment.
A substantive frame of reference is provided by the premiere in Venice, where the problem of rising sea levels is so obvious and acute, and performances in the Netherlands, the world water-engineering capital, which was unexpectedly and tragically
struck by flooding quite recently. This work gives new relevance to a literary work written more than 40 years ago, with a timeless underlying idea: the life and survival of the individual in a fluid world. The Book of Water touches us all.

作品將戲劇、錄像和音樂,包 括現場室內樂及電子樂共冶一 爐,由來自荷蘭的米歇爾‧梵 德阿作曲及執導,繼 2022 年 9 月於威尼斯雙年展全球首演 後,將於 2023 年香港藝術節舉 行亞洲首演。
《水之書》改編自 20 世紀瑞士最 著名作家之一馬克斯·弗里施 的小說《人類出現於全新世》, 描繪老人蓋沙因外面下着連綿 不絕的雨,坐困家中與外界隔 絕。患有腦退化症的他沉思過 去和現在,試圖弄清年月,拼 命回想事實,並苦苦追憶,尤 其他與已故妻子的婚姻。
「書中他描述了不同的天氣狀 況、山泥傾瀉、暴雨形成新湖 泊,隱喻了許多人承受氣候變 化風險的應對: 我們知道氣候 出現變化,但沒甚麼行動」,梵 德阿說。
演藝世家
改編自文學作品的《水之書》 融合戲劇、錄像及歌劇,巧妙 地將角色一分為二,描繪蓋沙 的腦退化情況: 年長演員提摩 太‧韋斯特飾演現實的蓋沙, 如同錄像片段投射在舞台上的 熒幕; 年輕演員西門‧韋斯特
則在台上扮演蓋沙以自為年輕 的自己。當飾演蓋沙女兒的英 國女高音瑪麗‧貝凡出現在錄 像熒幕,在伊斯美弦樂四重奏 演奏下,三位演員一起出現。
讓兩位演員扮演同一角色,梵 德阿說:「這是以戲劇方式向觀 眾展示角色的內心對話。」這 方式令演出成了一大挑戰。幸 好梵德阿有一張王牌——英國 演員西門‧韋斯特,二人曾經 合作。西門‧韋斯特因參演電 影《此情可問天》(1992)及劇 集《萬物生靈》(2020) 而聞名。 他舞台經驗豐富,也曾多番擔 任戲劇導演。其父提摩太‧韋 斯特現年 88 歲,同樣為舞台及 銀幕明星,在家鄉英國早已享 負盛名。
西門· 韋斯特不曾跟直系親 屬共演一角,「今次與父親合 作,最困難是不去想『他是 我爸爸』。在作品中,他是 我。」他說。
西門‧韋斯特見證母親近年 受腦退化症所困,母親的狀況 亦啟發了他與父親提摩太的演 出,「我媽媽曾經說過『我總是 不知道自己要去哪裏,但我就 是喜歡去那兒』,無論你有沒有 腦退化症,這對任何人來說, 都是一個很好的哲學名題。正 如蓋沙也有些事情總讓他很在 乎——無微不至的女兒、薰衣草
的香氣、陽光的暖意」。
梵德阿提到他早年已希望改編 弗里施的小說,但最近發生的 事,讓這意念浮出水面。「大 約十至十五年前,有人送我這 本書。此書真的震撼了我。我 決定要把它用於作品之中,但 當時沒有具體想法。然後數年 前,我因疫情滯留荷蘭,與朋 友隔絕,感覺和書中的氣氛非 常相似。」
創新精神
他補充說,作品的精心配樂隨 着由廣入深的家庭與個人情感 而變化,映襯起伏不斷的情 緒。「我知道我想用弦樂四重 奏,音樂頗具親密感。添加電 子音樂能延伸弦樂四重奏的聲 音,使演奏更富管弦樂感。」
梵德阿在之前一些作品,探索 如何把錄像運用其中,以及將 預先錄製的音樂與現場演奏的 管弦樂配合。他說:「我起初 只創作音樂會音樂。漸漸發 現有些我想傳達的信息,是無 法單靠音樂完成。有時我的想 法可以用一把小提琴向觀眾展 示,有時則需要十三個屏幕才 能表達。如何把意念向觀眾呈 現,取決於意念本身,而不是 形式。」

A haunting examination of dissolution and disintegration, of both the human mind and the natural landscape, The Book of Water also represents a dazzling example of formal innovation, splicing together theatre, film and music, both chamber and electronic. Composed and directed by the Netherlands’ Michel van der Aa, it will be making its Asian premiere at the 2023 Hong Kong Arts Festival, after making its global debut at the Venice Biennale in September 2022.
Based on Man in the Holocene, a novella by Max Frisch, one of Switzerland’s most celebrated 20th-century writers, The Book of Water revolves around an elderly man, Geiser, who sits inside his home while incessant rain lashes down outside, cutting him off from the world. Suffering from dementia, he contemplates his past and present, trying to make sense of both, and desperately struggles to hold on to both factual information and his memories, especially of his marriage to his late wife.
“He describes different types of weather, landslides happening, new lakes forming due to heavy rainfall,” Van der Aa tells FestMag. “It’s a metaphor for the way a lot of us undergo climate change risks. We know it’s there, but there aren’t so many actions.”
A family affair
A medium-busting mash-up of play, film and opera, adapted from a work of literature, The Book of Water ingeniously portrays Geiser’s mental decline by splitting the role in two: an
older actor (Timothy West) plays Geiser as he is now in a film projection, while a younger actor (Samuel West) appears on stage, playing him at the age he thinks he is. They’re accompanied by string quartet the Esmé Quartet, which appears live on stage, while British soprano Mary Bevan appears in the film, playing Geiser’s daughter.
Using two actors to portray the same character, says Van der Aa, “gave me a theatrical tool to show the audience an internal dialogue”. But it could also have made it quite a challenge to cast the show. Fortunately, Van der Aa had an ace up his sleeve, having previously worked with British actor Samuel West, known for TV and film roles from Howard’s End (1992) to All Creatures Great and Small (2020), who also has a long history in the theatre, including as a director. West’s father, Timothy, aged 88, happens to also be a star of stage and screen, long ubiquitous in his native UK.
Samuel West found it a challenge to play the same character as an immediate family member. “The difficult thing about working with my father on this is not to think ‘That’s my dad’,” he tells FestMag. “In the piece, it’s me.”
Both his and his father’s performances were influenced by the experience of seeing his mother suffer from dementia in recent years, he says. “My mother at one point said, ‘I don’t always know where I’m going but I always enjoy getting there’. It’s a good philosophy for anyone, whether they have dementia or not. Geiser has things that
matter to him: an attentive daughter, the smell of lavender, the warmth of the sun.”
Van der Aa says he had wanted to do something with Frisch’s novel for some time, but recent events brought it to the forefront. “Someone gifted me the book about 10 to 15 years ago and it really struck a nerve. I decided I’d use it for a piece, but I didn’t have a concrete idea. Then a couple of years ago I found myself locked down in the Netherlands, isolated from friends, and it felt like very much the same atmosphere as the book.”
Spirit of innovation
The orchestration of the piece reflects its changing moods, Van der Aa adds, varying from expansive to intensely domestic and personal. “I knew I wanted to use a string quartet. It’s quite intimate. Adding the electronics makes it much more orchestral; it’s always extending the string quartet’s sound.”
Van der Aa has explored the use of film and using recorded music alongside a live orchestra in his several of previous works. “I started with pure concert music,” he says. “Gradually I found I wanted to communicate things that I couldn’t communicate through music alone. Sometimes I have an idea that I can project to the audience with one violin; sometimes it calls for 13 screens. How I am going to bring it to the audience depends on the idea, never the other way round.”

Michel van der Aa is a multidisciplinary figure in contemporary music. A unique voice, he combines composition with film and stage direction, and script writing. Classical instruments, voices, electronic sound, actors, theatre and video are all seamless extensions of his musical vocabulary.
Before studying composition with Diderik Wagenaar, Gilius van Bergeijk and Louis Andriessen, van der Aa trained first as a recording engineer at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. In 2002 he broadened his skills with studies in film direction at the New York Film Academy and in 2007 he participated in the Lincoln Center Theater Director’s Lab, an intensive course in stage direction.
Van der Aa’s musical materials are hard to tease apart, constantly switching between stasis and high energy, concrete and abstract, acoustic and
electronic, pure and processed, brand new and half-remembered. Many of them are as visual as they are aural. The possibilities of digital and audio-visual technology often feature, not as a surface gloss to his work but at the core of his artistic outlook.
Van der Aa’s imaginative music theatre works include Upload (2019-20), Eight (201819), Blank Out (2015-16), Sunken Garden (2011-12), The Book of Disquiet (2008), After Life (200506) and One (2002). His repertoire also includes concert works and chamber music for small ensemble, soloists and soundtracks, such as his cross-media cello concerto Upclose (2010).
Van der Aa has collaborated with leading classical performers such as Sol Gabetta, Janine Jansen, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Julia Bullock, Barbara Hannigan and Roderick Williams; the Portuguese fado singer Ana Moura; pop acts Kate MillerHeidke, Wende and These New Puritans; and well-known actors including Klaus Maria Brandauer, Katja Herbers, Ashley Zukerman, Samuel West and Joao Reis.
His work has been featured at the Barbican Centre, Opera de Lyon, the Berliner Festspiele, the Venice Biennale, Donaueschinger Musiktage, the Festival d’Automne à Paris, the LA Philharmonic New Music Series, the Lincoln Centre Festival, the Holland Festival and the Tokyo Suntory Summer
Music Festival. Since 2011, van der Aa has been a “house composer” with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In August 2017, van der Aa was composer-in-residence at the Lucerne Festival.
In 1999 van der Aa became the first Dutch composer to win the prestigious International Gaudeamus Prize. Over the years, his innovative works have earned him numerous awards, including the 2022 International Opera Award for best digital opera, the 2015 Johannes Vermeer Award and the 2013 Grawemeyer Award.

Samuel West has played Hamlet and Richard II for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Valentine in the first production of Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia at the National Theatre in London and the voice of Pongo in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians II.
His films include Darkest Hour, The Gentlemen, Suffragette, On Chesil Beach, Van Helsing, Zeffirelli’s Jane Eyre and Roger Michell’s Notting Hill, Persuasion and Hyde Park on Hudson. He was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Howards End.
His roles for television include Siegfried Farnon in the new All Creatures Great and Small, Slow Horses, The Crown, Small Axe and W1A.
As a narrator, he has appeared with orchestras all over the world. He was a soloist in Walton’s Henry V at the Last Night of the Proms (2002). His previous work with Michel van der Aa includes the US and UK premieres of The Book of Disquiet (2016) and the film opera Upload (2021).
West is also a director. His first show was a school production of Max Frisch’s The Fire Raisers. He directed The Magic Flute (with Mary Bevan as Pamina) for the Palestine Mozart Festival.

在 2018 年倫敦威格摩爾音樂廳 國際弦樂四重奏大賽中獲得冠 軍等多個獎項後,伊斯美弦樂 四重奏便在弦樂四重奏的舞台 閃亮登場。其後,他們受邀到 各個音樂節及音樂廳演出,例 如瑞士琉森音樂節及奧地利埃 斯特哈希音樂節。

The Esmé Quartet made a sensational entrance into the string quartet world by winning multiple prizes, including the first prize, at the 2018 London Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition. Subsequently, the quartet appeared at festivals and concert halls such as the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland and the Classic Esterházy in Austria.
The quartet recorded its debut CD with works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Unsuk Chin and Frank Bridge on the Alpha Classics label. The recording was released in early 2020 and has achieved critical acclaim with a five-star review from Diapason.
Esmé Quartet was named the first artists-in-residence at the Lotte Concert Hall, Seoul, Korea, for the season 2020-21. The year 2021 saw an Italian tour and return engagements in Germany and Portugal. In 2022, the quartet performed on tour for the first time in North America and Japan.

The name of the quartet, Esmé, is taken from an old French word meaning “to be loved”. The quartet was formed in 2016 at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, Germany by four Korean musicians who were friends as youngsters and shared a passion for music, the arts and life. The quartet has been mentored by artists including Günter Pichler and Jonathan Brown.

Praised for his “immaculately refined” style (The Philadelphia Inquirer), violist Born Lau has appeared internationally as a soloist, chamber musician and principal violist. A prize winner at the Primrose International Viola Competition and the Astral National Auditions, he enjoys a career that spans three continents. Career highlights include performances as a soloist with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and Trondheim Soloists, performance at the Henry A. Kissinger Prize ceremony in Berlin, and a concert with the Tokyo String Quartet in Los Angeles. Lau served as Principal Violist of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, as well as Guest Principal Violist of San Diego Symphony, Curtis Symphony Orchestra, and Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra.
Lau graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music and the Colburn Conservatory of Music. He has studied with viola teachers including Roberto Diaz, Paul Coletti and Richard Fleischman. He also studied chamber music with members
of the Emerson, Guarneri and Tokyo String Quartets.
As an educator, Lau has given viola master classes throughout the world, including the Royal Academy of Music, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Soochow University, the New World School of the Arts, Washington Conservatory of Music, and the Hong Kong Baptist University. He is currently Distinguished Professor of Viola at the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

李一葦為香港長笛演奏家、作 曲家及指揮。自 2016 年起,他 擔任香港創樂團的長笛獨奏樂 手,隨團到冰島、韓國及台灣 等地表演。他亦經常獲邀演出 獨奏及室樂演奏會。李一葦熱 心教學,現為香港大學助理講 師、香港演藝學院兼任室樂講 師及琉森音樂節學院講師。
自 2016 年起,他跟隨馬克.安 德烈、法蘭克.貝德羅西安等 著名作曲家學習,他的作品曾 獲巴黎當代樂團、德國現代樂 團及維也納樂聲平台等首演。 2022 年,李一葦的首套歌劇作 品《逐流人生》與柏林聲音藝 術工作室 klingklangklong 共同 創作,於德國森柏歌劇院及香 港新視野藝術節首演,並由他 擔任指揮。

Angus Lee is a Hong Kongbased performer-composer. He has been the solo flautist of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble since 2016, taking part in the Ensemble’s tours to among others, Iceland, South Korea, and Taiwan. He is frequently invited to perform
solo and chamber recitals. A dedicated pedagogue, Lee is currently a faculty member of The University of Hong Kong and a woodwind chamber music faculty at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, as well as a teaching faculty member at the Lucerne Festival Academy.
Since 2016, he has studied with leading composers including Mark Andre and Franck Bedrossian. His works have been premiered by Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien, among others. In 2022, Lee’s first opera, Chasing Waterfalls, co-created with the Berlin-based sound artist collective klingklangklong, was premiered at Semperoper Dresden and the New Vision Arts Festival (Hong Kong). On both occasions, Lee conducted the performances.
Lee is a tireless advocate for contemporary music. He conducted several regional premieres of works by, among others, Franck Bedrossian and Nico Muhly. He has also premiered works by numerous local composers, including Daniel Lo’s The Happy Family (2021) and Songs of Virotopia (2022). In 2021, he was selected to take part in Ensemble Modern’s 10th International Composers and Conductors Seminar, and he led the Ensemble at the Biennale for Contemporary Music Frankfurt Rhein Main in 2003.

Timothy West is a versatile British actor noted for his power and command of the classical stage and other mediums.
For the Royal Shakespeare
Company and the Aldwych, he appeared in Afore Night Come and The Marat-Sade, in addition to his Shakespeare repertoire The Merry Wives of Windsor, Love's Labour's Lost and The Merchant of Venice. For the Prospect Theatre Company, he took on the Shakespearean roles of Prospero (The Tempest), Claudius (Hamlet) and Bolingbroke (Richard II), among others.
On television, he has played kingly roles, such as Edward VII, and essayed a number of notable historical figures such as Mikhail Gorbechev and Martin Luther. He has portrayed Winston Churchill a number of times, while his extended gallery of greats have gone on to include Sir Thomas Beecham and Joseph Stalin. His films include Nicholas and Alexandra, Cry Freedom, Ever After, 102 Dalmatians, Iris, Endgame, Run for Your Wife and Delirium.
He is the author of several books, including I'm Here I Think, Where are You? Long married to actress/comedienne Prunella Scales, the couple have appeared together on stage in such productions as When We Are Married and The Birthday Party. Together they presented the Channel 4 series Great Canal Journeys.
In 1984, he was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Soprano Mary Bevan is a versatile vocalist with a repertory stretching from Monteverdi to contemporary premieres. She has a bent towards comic opera and has appeared several times in operettas by Gilbert and Sullivan.
Bevan was born in Hertford into a musical family. She attended Trinity College, Cambridge, took singing courses there and then went on to the Royal Academy of Music, where she studied with Lillian Watson and Audrey Hyland. Bevan has appeared at Covent Garden, the English National Opera and the Opera de Monte Carlo, among others. She is a winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society's Young Artist Award. Her roles have included Arpago in Vivaldi’s L'Incoronazione di Dario for England's Garsington Opera; Pamina and Papagena in Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the Palestinian Mozart Festival and British Youth Opera, respectively. Unusually among top-flight operatic sopranos, she has appeared as Yum-Yum in Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado. Bevan is also in demand as a soloist in concert music, having appeared with such groups as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the English Concert, with which she toured Asia.
Bevan has recorded for the Signum Classics, Delphian, and Champs Hill labels, among others.
