Now in its 46th year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival continues to contribute to the cultural life of Hong Kong, delighting audiences from near and far. This year, the Festival puts on a wide variety of performances that showcase a mix of classic and contemporary genres, spotlighting Hong Kong’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. Featuring some 130 performances in a packed month of music, dance, theatre, opera and more, the Festival has much to offer to arts lovers of all kinds. Alongside dazzling performances by an array of local and international artists, the Festival continues to place great emphasis on its outreach activities. To develop youngsters’ appreciation of the arts, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival offers local students the opportunity to enjoy the Festival’s performances and participate in multi-arts activities. Similarly, the PLUS programme gives audiences an inspirational glimpse into the creative process behind the core Festival performances through a combination of workshops, backstage tours and masterclasses. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts Festival In, Of and For Hong Kong

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2018 represents roughly 14% of its HK$125 million budget. Around 32% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and another 36% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 18% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include A Floating Family, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 26 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 730,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

《跨越意象》音樂會介紹 上海音樂學院隔壁有一家書店,十多年前,我偶

Introduction: Beyond Impressionism There is a bookstore next to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and on occasional visits to the store around 10 years ago I came across Volumes 1 and 2 of Complete Chinese Piano Works. I even bought an extra copy of the album for my sister, who is a piano teacher. Since then I’ve seen the publication of multiple Chinese piano albums, with impressive diversity of content and style. This has given me an impetus to try and understand this repertoire more and to share it with other music lovers. This concert features some of the finest piano music written by Chinese composers over the last century and beyond, many of whom who absorbed influences from other artists and cultures in other parts of the world. He Luting’s The Cowherd’s Flute is just one piano work that is familiar to pianists of my generation, while on entering music college I also had the chance to explore Chou Wenchung’s The Willows Are New, which further broadened my exposure to this repertoire. In China, He Luting had been influenced by the new composition techniques and sounds of French “impressionist” composers like Debussy, while the French American pioneer Edgard Varèse (who is the subject of the pre-concert film screening The One All Alone) helped to shape the style of his students
André Jolivet and Chou Wenchung and those that followed them. In turn, Chou’s own students Zhou Long, Chen Yi and Tan Dun have built their own internationally acclaimed bodies of work, noted both for combining Eastern and Western composition techniques as well as the integration of Chinese folk music into their music. Chen Qigang is another composer of the same generation whose work exhibits uniquely Chinese sensibilities, while as the last student of Olivier Messiaen he is also a living example of the lineage that stretches from the time of the French “impressionist” musical movement. But why present this programme now? 2018 marks the centenary of Claude Debussy’s death; this anniversary and the fascinating crosscultural connections between French and Chinese composers have served as an inspiration for this concert, which in turn showcases the evolution of Chinese piano music over the past 100 years. There are also new voices of Hong Kong represented, through composers Joyce Tang and Lawrence Lau. Many of the works performed tonight are lesserknown gems of the piano repertoire, but are deserving of a wider audience. I hope this is just the beginning of a beautiful adventure. The One All Alone by Frank Scheffer is an expedition into the life and work of the French-American composer Edgard Varèse (1883-1965). The fulllength documentary includes rare footage of Varèse, and interviews with Pierre Boulez and Elliott Carter. Chou Wenchung is interviewed in Varèse's New York City home, and discusses the influence of his former teacher on site in Shanghai and Santa Fe. Musical performances include Italian conductor Riccardo Chailly, who offers an inimitably informed impression of the composer's adventurous sense of musical expression.

樂曲介紹 Programme notes 賀綠汀 《晚會》 《牧童短笛》 賀綠汀生於 1903 年湖南省邵陽縣的農民家庭。
《牧童短笛》寫於 1 9 3 4 年,最初是一首三段曲
他的父親是鄉間的業餘民間歌舞團一員,賀綠汀
式的鋼琴獨奏曲。第一部分聽起來帶有中國水彩
從小便開始接觸音樂。他在考入享負盛名的長沙
畫的意境,描繪一個騎在水牛背上的男孩一邊吹
岳雲中學學習音樂之前,曾任學校老師。賀綠汀

He Luting (1903-1999) Evening Party The Cowherd’s Flute He Luting was born in Shaoyang, Hunan in 1903. Born to a peasant family, He's father was also a member of the local amateur opera troupe, meaning that music was part of his life from a young age. The early years of his career were as a school teacher, before applying to study music at the prestigious Yueyun School in Changsha. The politically engaged He took part in uprisings in both Haifeng and Guangzhou in 1927, before entering the National Conservatory of Music (which would later become the Shanghai Conservatory of Music) in 1931 where he studied both harmony and piano. After 1949 He was appointed to a number of important roles including Director of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and Chairman of the East China branch of the National Musicians’ Association. Originally composed as a piano piece in 1934, Evening Party is a musical representation of a Chinese New Year celebration. He later arranged the piece for orchestra, which was performed in a broadcast to the Soviet Union, and then in a further revision some years later Evening Party became one of six movements in a wider orchestral suite. Tonight’s performance features the original solo piano version; despite lacking the massed forces of a full orchestra, the joy and camaraderie of the celebration are still clearly discernible in this solo piano arrangement.
The Cowherd’s Flute was originally composed in 1934 as a piano solo in ternary form. The first part sounds like a simple and elegant Chinese watercolour painting. It pictures a boy on the back of a buffalo, carefree and playing a bamboo flute, wandering in the fields. It may well be that this is a depiction of the composer’s childhood. The middle part is a traditional folk-dance with jubilant rhythm and melody, before the third part returns to a recapitulation of the first. In 1934 The Cowherd’s Flute won first prize at a piano composition contest sponsored by the Russian composer Alexander Tcherepnin. The piece’s strong national folk-style makes it a fine and imaginative example of modern Chinese piano music, while its success in the composition contest is illustrative of He's ability to marry Chinese characteristics with European classical music traditions.

江文也 Jiang Wenye
Jiang Wenye (1910-1983) Bagatelles Nos 3, 4, 5, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 Jiang Wenye was born in 1910 in Taiwan, at which time it was a Japanese territory. He moved to Xiamen at the age of six and studied in Japan from the age of 13. His interest in music led him to study composition and vocal performance at Tokyo Music School; following graduation from college he worked at the Columbia Recording Company and started composition studies with Kosaku Yamada. As a composer, Jiang won a number of national prizes in Japan between 1934 and 1938. In 1936, his orchestral work Formosan Dance was an award winner at the art competition of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, while his piano suite Bagatelles was selected to feature at the fourth Vienna Modern Music Festival in 1938. Jiang was one of the very first Asian composers to establish international fame. Bagatelles, written in 1935-1936, consists of 16 short piano pieces with different music styles. The work demonstrates musical elements and concepts from the East as well as reflecting the influence of various Western composition techniques, such as romanticism, nationalism, neo-classicalism, impressionism and expressionism. Despite this being one of Jiang’s early works, it already depicts his eclectic ideas and broad artistry.

周文中 Chou Wenchung
Chou Wenchung (1923- ) The Willows Are New Born in Yantai, China, in 1923, the Chinese-American composer Chou Wenchung has resided in the United States since 1946. Although he arrived with a degree in civil engineering to pursue architectural studies on a scholarship at Yale University, Chou turned to his love of music instead and became a composition student at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Nicolas Slonimsky. In 1949 Chou met the composer Edgard Varèse, became his pupil and friend, and later served as his literary executor. His relationship with Varèse was an important one, with Varese’s musical conception of sound as “living” and space as “open” proving influential on Chou as he developed a composition style that married traditional Chinese melodies with contemporary Western elements, for example in The Willows Are New. In 1964 Chou became a member of the music faculty at Columbia University, where he had studied previously, he would remain there until 1991 when he retired and became Fritz Reiner Professor Emeritus. In the 1980s his students at Columbia included a number of now notable young Chinese composers including Chen Yi, Tan Dun and Zhou Long.

The Willows Are New was inspired by a Tang poem Yang Kuan by Wang Wei (689-759). From this original source, Chou Wenchung refashioned a composition in which mutations of the original material are woven over the entire range of the piano and embroidered with sonorities that are the magnified reflexes of brushstroke-like movements. The title The Willows Are New comes from a line of the poem. Chou Wenchung’s own translation follows:

若利維 André Jolivet
Mana, six pieces for piano The French composer André Jolivet was notable for his passionate dedication to French music and culture, and also for the impressive diversity in style to be found across his oeuvre. At different stages of his composition career, Jolivet was inspired by styles from atonalism to spiritual music; his mature work displayed a synthesis of his many influences. A student of Edgard Varèse, Jolivet came to be strongly influenced by his teacher’s approaches to sound and composition. The Mana suite of six piano pieces came about when Varèse left France to return to his base in the USA, leaving behind six objects – a puppet, a magic bird, a statue of a Balinese princess, a goat, a cow and a winged horse. Each piece represents an object, and is widely considered to be the manifestation of Jolivet’s “magic period”, in which the composer sought to re-create the ancient use of music as a magical and religious means of human expression.

It contains three short movements: Dance of Flowing Streams, Song of Crystal Light, and Splashes of Colour. Dance of Flowing Streams is characterised by its fast and perpetual motion reaching towards Song of Crystal Light, which is, in contrast, simple, clear and transparent in character, capturing an idea of the reflection of light through a crystal. 《八幅水彩畫的回憶》是我離開湖南、入讀
Eight Memories in Watercolor was written when I left Hunan to study at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. It was my opus one. The Cultural Revolution had just ended, China just opened its doors, I was immersed in studying Western classical and modern music, but I was also homesick. I longed for the folk songs and savoured the memories of my childhood. Therefore, I wrote my first piano work as a diary of longing. The work is sub-divided into eight short pieces.
北京中央音樂學院時所寫,是我作品序列中 的第一套作品。當時文革剛剛結束,中國門 戶剛開放,雖然我正全情投入去學習西方古 典音樂和現代音樂,但也很想家,捨不得伴 着我長大的家鄉民謠和童年回憶,所以我寫 了自己第一套鋼琴作品,就像是一本思鄉的 日記。全套作品分為八首短曲。

Pieces 2 (Staccato Beans), 3 (Herdboy’s Song), 4 (Blue Nun) and 8 (Sunrain) are based on my favorite folk songs from my childhood in Hunan. I composed the melodies of the other four. Since then, choreographers Chiang Ching and Muna Tseng have set this work to modern dance. Pianist Fou Ts’ong got to know this work through Chiang, and performed four of the pieces. In 2001 I met Lang Lang, and he told me he wanted to premiere the complete Eight Memories in Watercolor in his concerts, for which I am very grateful. I made slight revisions to the work, in renaming titles, the order of the pieces, and overall structure, according to Lang Lang’s suggestions.

Lawrence Lau (1991-) Towards a Mirror for two pianos Lawrence Lau is a Hong Kong based artist and a graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, with a major in composition and electronic music. His numerous compositions range from works for chamber ensembles, orchestra, Chinese instruments and live electronics, among others. His music has been performed at international music festivals and art events including the Asian Composers League Conference and Festival, highSCORE Music Festival Italy, Musicus Fest, Beijing International Composition Workshop, Hong Kong New Generation, SoundImagination and others.

Towards a Mirror for two pianos is dedicated to Lok Ping and Lok Ting. The first inspiration came from the visual idea that the twin pianists are performing on two pianos, facing each other, like looking at a mirror. Therefore, the mirror has an important role in the piece. However, instead of presenting the mirror itself, the relationship between actual and virtual images is suggested using register, intervallic design, the contrast of intensity, and the movement of the performers on the stage. The mirror, separating but connecting the reality and illusion at the same time, may become more attractive to be imagined.

首雙鋼琴作品。樂曲靈感先從畫面而來-雙 胞胎姐妹在兩台長直三角琴的兩端,充滿默 契地演奏,宛如各自照着鏡子一樣。如是者, 鏡,成為了作品的中心。雖說如此,鏡的實 態並沒有直接在作品中展現,反而作品純粹 地探索着鏡裏鏡外的虛相及實相,它們可以 在音域、音程、兩台鋼琴的強弱對比、甚至 樂手的舉手投足間呈現及暗示。透過不同的 「虛」與「實」,給予對作為兩者間界限或 連接的鏡,想像的空間。 作品大致分為四段,第一段為對稱的雙聲部 詠唱,聲部以相反方向流動,以中央 C 為唯 一的交匯點。及後的兩段都以不同設計的持 續長音作為主線,讓持續長音從低聲部的震 音發展到高聲部具節奏型的八度音。尾段為 首段的變奏,以完全的對稱的和聲,最終以 回到中央 C,即以詠唱的交匯點作結。 劉曉江
The composer divides the music into four main sections. A still and meditative atmosphere is introduced at the very beginning with two-part contrapuntal writing. The middle C serves as the only overlapping point for the voices. The following two sections are designed with ostinatos, growing from a tremolo in the low register to high and rhythmic octaves. The last part of the music is a variation of the opening with symmetrical harmony, and eventually, the middle C is reached again to conclude the piece. Lawrence Lau

Chen Yi (1953-) China West Suite for two pianos Born in Guangzhou in 1953, Chen Yi began her musical studies at the young age of three. During the Cultural Revolution Chen relocated to the countryside as a labourer but nevertheless took her violin with her, practicing when opportunities arose. When the Beijing Conservatory of Music reopened in the late 1970s, Chen was in one of the first waves of students to enrol, along with other notable Chinese composers including Zhou Long, Chen Qigang, and Tan Dun, among others. By the mid-80s, Chen had written the first Chinese viola concerto and had her works broadcast on CCTV and Radio Beijing; she also became the first woman in China to receive a masters degree in composition, before moving to the USA in 1986 for further study.

Chen is a prolific composer whose diverse compositions have been praised for combining both Chinese folk and Western classical music traditions. Her work has been performed and commissioned by worldrenowned musicians and ensembles including Yehudi Menuhin, Yo-Yo Ma, Evelyn Glennie, the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Beijing Central Philharmonic Orchestra (since renamed the China National Symphony Orchestra).

周龍 Zhou Long
Zhou Long (1953- ) Pianogongs Zhou Long is widely recognised for a body of work that embeds artistic originality and elements of both Chinese and Western cultures in its musical language. His works have often created a rich creative environment in which the horizons of Western instruments have been turned to the east and Chinese instruments to the west, for example in his work Pianogongs. Born into an artistic family in Beijing in 1953, Zhou learnt the piano from a young age. During the Cultural Revolution he spent time working on a rural farm before attending the Beijing Conservatoire to study composition; in 1983 and as a fresh graduate Zhou was appointed composer-in-residence with the National Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra of China. Zhou relocated to the USA in 1985, studying at Columbia University where his teachers included Chou Wenchung. He also played an important role at Music From China, an organisation set up to present performances of traditional Chinese music in the USA. A US citizen since 1999, Zhou’s work has received commissions and awards from around the globe, such as his first opera Madame White Snake (2011 Pulitzer Prize for Music) and his piano concerto Postures, co-commissioned by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and BBC Proms.

Pianogongs was inspired by the scripture of the Beijing Opera gong and drum, and the sound of bronze bells and chime stones. When I started working on the piece, I began to think of the spectrum of bronze, which reflects the colours and sonorities of a percussive effect and fast repetitive rhythm. In this work, I have used the piano as a percussion instrument along with two Chinese opera gongs (laid on the soft top of an extra piano bench to the left side). The combination of piano and gongs forms a kind of performing force of a Beijing Opera percussion ensemble.

There are three basic materials used throughout the piece: 1. A fast repetitive rhythm, which represents drum rolls on dagu (large drum) and bangu (piccolo drum); 2. A s e ri e s o f c h o rd s , wh i c h i s b a s e d o n t h e combination of major triad and perfect fourth, creating the tinkling sound of the chime stones; 3. An active staccato motive, which is used as a transition between sections. The alternation of these three materials forms the structure of the piece. The repetitive rhythm starts in the mid-range of the piano, and is developed into very high and very low ranges. The original shape of the series of chords later becomes varied textures, such as different arpeggio shapes. The two gongs played by the left hand have been heavily used in various rhythmic patterns. After a big crash on the piano in the middle of the piece, there is a short cadenza for the left hand playing two gongs. The sound in the high range on the piano and the small gong at the end of the piece echoes the lingering bell chimes. Zhou Long

Chen Qigang (1951- ) Instants d’un opéra de Pékin As a teenager, Chen Qigang was studying music at Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music Middle School when the Cultural Revolution began in 1966. He was confined for three years and underwent “ideological reeducation”, yet went on learning composition despite social and political anti-cultural pressures. In 1977 the state reopened entry to the Conservatory and Chen studied there for five years with Luo Zhongrong. In 1983 Chen won a postgraduate contest to travel abroad, and for four years was Olivier Messiaen’s only student after the French composer’s retirement from the Paris Conservatoire. He described Chen’s compositions as showing “real inventiveness, very great talent and a total assimilation of Chinese thinking with European musical concepts.” Chen has received commissions from Radio France, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, Stuttgart RSO, Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and the Koussevitzky Foundation. He was composer-in-residence at the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg from 2004 to 2006. In 2008 Chen worked as Director of Music for the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony, watched by 100,000 in the stadium and several billion worldwide via TV. His work for piano and orchestra, Er Huang, was premiered by Lang Lang at Carnegie Hall in 2009 and re-interpreted by Herbie Hancock at Lincoln Center in 2013. His trumpet concerto for Alison Balsom, Joie Eternelle, received first performances in 2014 with the China Philharmonic and Long Yu in Beijing, Shanghai and at the BBC Proms in London, with performances in 2016 in Amsterdam and Munich. His variations for orchestra, Luan Tan, were premiered by the Hong Kong Philharmonic in April 2015 and recently received their Nor th American premiere by the China NCPA Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in New York. His new violin concerto La joie de la souffrance was premiered with Maxim Vengerov as soloist at the 2017 Beijing Music Festival. A new CD of Chen's works was released by Naxos in 2016. 《京劇瞬間》是由國際梅湘鋼琴比賽委約,
Commissioned by the Olivier Messiaen International Piano Competition, Instants d’un opéra de Pékin was composed by Chen Qigang in 2000 and revised in 2004. Among the composer’s works that are based on Beijing opera music, two of them are for piano and Instants d’un opéra de Pékin is one of them. Chen recalled the writing process as “All I knew about the piece before I started composing it was just an emotion, a distancing feeling that was beyond reach. Such a feeling consists of familiar tones of Beijing opera that come from my childhood memories of my family and their daily lives… Making reasonable use of Chinese traditional musical elements has gradually become my way of self-expression and thinking.”

The theme and counter-theme of the piece come from two well-known instrumental fragments of Beijing opera which are often used for scenes in which the actors mime without singing. The Beijing opera style leitmotif is adorned with vibrant “harmonic clothings” – such as a fifth interval, fourth interval, fourth chord, added sixth triad, pentatonic integrated chord – with pentatonic scale characteristics at the same time integrated into the parallel motion and inverted motion of the upper and lower voices, especially combining Messiaen’s regular use of polyharmony and polytonality, creating a dramatic effect in one go. The piece demands delicate manipulation of tone colour, touch, tempo, range and also musical expression.

Claude Debussy (1862-1918) Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune for two pianos Born in 1862 in a suburb of Paris, Claude Debussy’s parents were not from a wealthy background, but their son’s clear gift at the piano meant that he was able to enter the Paris Conservatory at the age of just 11. Debussy’s original approach to harmony and musical structure was hugely influential, utilising scales and tonal structures that firmly rejected the tradition of the 19th century and are considered of seminal importance in the 20th century canon.

Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune is based on the poem of the same title by Stéphane Mallarmé. The orchestral version of the work is Debussy’s most performed piece, but it is the arrangement for two pianos (which was published simultaneously with the more famous score) that will be performed this evening. Indeed, the piano arrangement played an important role during the process of composition, since Debussy based it on the short score (a sketch in piano notation for the full score) and wrote it before the orchestral score. Despite this, the publisher titled the piano version “Réduction pour deux pianos” as if it was a transcription based on an orchestral original, however this was not the case. The poem that the piece is based on depicts the inner monologue of a faun (a mythological creature, half man, half goat) as he contemplates cavorting with nymphs and other creatures. Debussy’s music wonderfully captures the sensuous, erotic nature of the poem, with its beautiful colours and harmonies making it one of the most commonly cited examples of musical impressionism.

Born in Hong Kong , Wong Wai-yuen is an undergraduate student at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, studying under Professor Eleanor Wong. She has given recitals in Hamburg, Beijing and Xiamen, and also performed in Magic Piano & The Chopin Shorts at the 42nd Hong Kong Arts Festival. She has collaborated with the Hong Kong Children’s Symphony Orchestra and the Hong Kong Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra as a soloist. She has won numerous prizes, including second Prize in the Solo Piano Competition at the Beijing International Music Festival, First Prize at the HKGNA Music Competition, Second Prize at the International Piano Competition for Yong Musicians (Enschede, The Netherlands), Third Prize at the First Korea International Competition for Young Pianists, and the First Prize and Professional Grand Prize at the 75th Steinway & Sons International Youth Piano Competition. She was invited to perform at The International Steinway Arts Festival held in Hamburg, representing China.

A young Hong Kong-born pianist and a Young Steinway Artist, Wong Wai-yin obtained her Bachelor of Music degree with firstclass honours from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under Professor Gabriel Kwok and was awarded a full scholarship by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund to pursue a Master’s Degree at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University under Professor Boris Slutsky. Later on she was awarded a full scholarship by the Yale University School of Music, under Professor Boris Berman, and has just obtained an Artist Diploma. Wong has been the recipient of international awards including First Prize at the Southern Highlands International Piano Competition in Australia, Second Prize at the 17th Hilton Head International Piano Competition in the USA, and received a Gold Medal prize at the 7th International Competition for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz, held in Ukraine. She has performed worldwide including a solo recital at the 39th Hong Kong Arts Festival, the opening recital of the Newport International Festival in the USA, the “New Masters on Tour” series at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and in cities including Brisbane, Canberra, Paris, New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Shanghai and others.

Taiwan-born pianist Evelyn Chang has been an active performer in Asia since moving to Hong Kong in 2009. She enjoys collaborations with composers and artists across the world that in the past have included many appearances at the International Hong Kong Chamber Music Festival and a performance with Vadim Repin at the 45th Hong Kong Arts Festival. Chang spent many years in London where she studied and performed regularly as a soloist and chamber musician, appearing at Buckingham Palace, Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall and many other venues in the UK and Europe. She has premiered new works and also made numerous recordings including Mahakali – an improvisatory album with saxophonist Paul Dunmall, a recital album with violist Maxim Rysanov and a debut solo album Poets from the East for Avie Records, featuring miniatures by Desyatnikov, Ma Shui-long and Tabakova.

The twin sisters Lok Ping and Lok Ting Chau have gained wide recognition for their fine musicality and fascinating synchronicity: “There is no trace of showing off, instead a deep immersion in the content of the work, a charming change between rhythmic sharpening and soft sliding.” (Südwest Presse). The twin sisters received their Masters degrees from the University of Music, Drama and Theatre in Hannover, Germany and from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with Prof Eleanor Wong. Th e s i s t e rs a re l a u re a t e s o f p re s t i gi o u s international competitions, including the 64th ARD International Music Competition in Munich and the Fourth International Piano Duo Competition in Bialystok, Poland. They have received regular invitations from Dranoff International Two Piano Foundation in Miami and other music festivals worldwide, including Liesborner Chamber Music Festival in Germany, International Gdánsk Piano Duo Festival in Poland, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Joy of Music Festival (Hong Kong) and Gulangyu Piano Festival in Xiamen, China. The duo have also collaborated with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the New Zurich Orchestra, the Bialystok Symphony Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
