Now in its 46th year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival continues to contribute to the cultural life of Hong Kong, delighting audiences from near and far. This year, the Festival puts on a wide variety of performances that showcase a mix of classic and contemporary genres, spotlighting Hong Kong’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. Featuring some 130 performances in a packed month of music, dance, theatre, opera and more, the Festival has much to offer to arts lovers of all kinds. Alongside dazzling performances by an array of local and international artists, the Festival continues to place great emphasis on its outreach activities. To develop youngsters’ appreciation of the arts, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival offers local students the opportunity to enjoy the Festival’s performances and participate in multi-arts activities. Similarly, the PLUS programme gives audiences an inspirational glimpse into the creative process behind the core Festival performances through a combination of workshops, backstage tours and masterclasses. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts Festival In, Of and For Hong Kong

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2018 represents roughly 14% of its HK$125 million budget. Around 32% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and another 36% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 18% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include A Floating Family, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 26 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 730,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time transferred to London’s West End, following a sold-out run at the National Theatre’s Cottesloe theatre in September 2012. It is the recipient of a then record-breaking seven 2013 Olivier Awards, including Best New Play, Best Director, Best Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design – more Olivier Awards than any other play in the history of London’s West End at that time.

The show tells the story of Christopher John Francis Boone, who is 15 years old. He stands besides Mrs Shears’ dead dog, which has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in a book he is writing to solve the mystery of who killed Wellington. He has an extraordinary brain, and is exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and distrusts strangers. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.

I was a real fan of the book, I read it when it first came out and absolutely loved it. I never thought in a million years that it would be adapted for the stage. In fact, I thought it was a book you couldn’t really adapt. Then Simon Stephens asked me to read a script that he’d spent some time on as a favour; it was an adaptation of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. I had no idea that he was asking me to direct it, although he’s told me recently that it was his secret plan. I read it a couple of times and I knew I loved it. It was very visceral and incredibly emotional.
designer Bunny Christie before and I’d worked with lighting designer Paule Constable before, as well as composer Adrian Sutton (the latter two on War Horse). When it came to staging the show, between us all – along with video designer Finn Ross and sound designer Ian Dickinson – we eventually came to a happy place that the play should take place in Christopher’s brain and that it should be set in a box, and that in the box there are lots of magic tricks. But the magic tricks aren’t down to incredible moving digital scenery, it’s to do with seeing how the humans create the magic.
In a very early draft Simon wrote something like “maybe at one point Christopher goes bonkers and dances all over the place - maybe we can involve Frantic”. I knew physical theatre company Frantic Assembly’s work and I really liked them, and I had always wanted to work with them. So I jumped at the chance to work with them early on in the process. I knew that there were a lot of parts of the play that needed to be staged imaginatively with the actors on the stage, as opposed to using great bits of scenery. I’d worked with the stage
What is it about the play that resonates with audiences? Lots of people relate to having a really inspirational teacher who, amongst the midst of disappointment that every other adult gives you, can see potential in a child. Curious Incident is also about parenting and about families – parents who are flawed but desperately trying to do their best. They’re really trying to put Christopher first in everything, they just get it wrong. It’s also about Christopher – he’s highly vulnerable and highly limited in some ways, yet manages to triumph and succeed in a way that’s beyond even his dreams. The thing about the play and the book is that we try to get the audience to see things through Christopher’s eyes most of the time. They don’t see him as “other”. They see him as themselves.

We first opened The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at the National Theatre five years ago – most of my plays run for five weeks not five years. It therefore seems an appropriate time to consider what I’ve learnt about the play since it opened. When I wrote the play in 2008, I wrote it for three people. I wrote it for Mark Haddon, the writer of the novel, because he asked me if I would. I liked him very much and I’d never done an adaptation before so it seemed like a fine place to start. I also wrote it for my two youngest children, Stanley and Scarlett, because at the time they were both under 10 and far too young to see my other, often dark, violent and upsetting plays. I was moved when Mark came to a reading and said that he loved it in a way he hadn’t anticipated. I was thrilled when Stanley and Scarlett saw it – especially when they whispered to the people around them that I’d written the play and I was their Dad.
So the three people I wrote the play for were happy and their response meant a huge amount to me. I never anticipated, however, that it would be seen by over two million more people. I am often asked why I think it has reached so many people and lived for so long. I am starting to be able to answer these questions. Partly the play has succeeded because we are faithful to Mark’s novel – and his novel is so brilliant. The week before we started rehearsals for the original production, I was asked by a playwright friend of mine whether or not I realised that Curious Incident was the “nation’s favourite book”. Well, there are reasons for that. Mark’s book resonates with people because it is a book about bravery. It is bravery, not sadness, in stories that makes people cry. When we read or watch other people being brave we recognise a desire and capacity for bravery in ourselves.

It resonates, too, because it is a story about family and all of us are defined by our relationships with our families. Those of us who have kids know how hard it is to raise them with any kind of sanity of reason. And as much as we find them difficult or frustrating, most of us can appreciate our own parents’ difficulties and frustrations in raising us. The play, more than the novel perhaps, is also about teaching and learning. Central to the play is Christopher’s relationship with his teacher, Siobhan. I think everybody who ever went to school, even those who had an unhappy time there, had one teacher who understood them more than any other. That relationship is often one that defines our sense of self. When you see Christopher and Siobhan’s relationship, it’s in some way a reminder of that. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a play about many things. It strikes me though, five years into its remarkably lengthy life, that it’s about travel as much as anything. Christopher Boone finds people difficult. So difficult in fact that he has never left his street unaccompanied. And then one night something happens that leads him into the most extraordinary journey of his life. And now the production telling the story of Christopher’s journey is on a journey itself, touring to different corners of the world. This not only means the world to me but also seems thematically rather relevant. A play about a boy finding the bravery to leave his cul-de-sac in Swindon has ended up taking him all over the world. Five years ago, my same playwright friend also asked me if I was nervous that such a well-loved book was going to be staged. Might people not feel let down when they saw a book they loved realised by others? Of course that was always a possibility. I took consolation from the belief that nobody
loved Mark’s book more than myself and Marianne Elliott, the play’s director, and the astonishing team of artists and actors involved. Without doubt much of the play’s success is dependent on the brilliance of Marianne’s production: the visceral use of technology and movement, and the detail of every actor’s performance. But as much as audiences love the theatricality I think they love the story that we found in Mark’s book. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime is a story about a deeply familiar world – a teenage boy’s life in an English suburb – but it is told from the point of view of a boy with an exceptional mind. Christopher Boone sees truths about our world that we have never noticed before. The tensions between the deeply familiar and the exceptional are exhilarating. Through Christopher Boone’s extraordinary mind we – myself, Marianne and our artistic collaborators – were able to see our world in a way we never had before. That’s what I wanted for my children, and what I wanted Mark to know he had done for me. It is all we have tried to do for our audiences. And I think it is Christopher’s capacity to find the magical within a world that seems mundane that has captivated those two million other people who have come along to see our work. The Curious Incident’s Origins I’ve always regretted that the phrase “Asperger Syndrome” appeared on the cover of Curious Incident when it was first published. Mostly because the central conceit was that Christopher himself had written the book (for a long time it had the dull but accurate working title, Christopher’s Book) and “Asperger Syndrome” is not a phrase he uses. In the book he refers to himself only as “someone who has Behavioural Problems”. I prefer the wry humour in those words. I like the way it gently mocks diagnostic medical language. I like the way it includes all of us – who doesn’t have behavioural problems? But I like it most of all because it is Christopher’s own phrase. Labels tell us very little about the person who has been labelled and a lot about the people doing the labelling. If you want to find out who someone is, just ask them. In the early 1980s I spent several months working at an Adult Training Centre in North London. There was a great deal of discussion at the time about the language used to describe people who had what were coming to be known as learning difficulties but were more widely known as mental handicaps. The adults who attended the centre nineto-five, Monday to Friday, were known as “trainees” despite the fact that they were trained to do very little, so the staff were keen to replace the word. When asked for his opinion, a middle-aged trainee called Clive said, dryly, “I think we should be called The Obedient Dogs”. His suggestion comes back to me every time I hear well-intentioned people searching for the appropriate politically correct language. Clive is probably called a “client” now.

One of the other reasons I regret the words “Asperger Syndrome” appearing on the original cover of Curious Incident is that it sparked a sometimes heated and often misguided debate which rumbles on quietly to this day. In short, is Christopher a correct representation of someone with the condition? The assumption being that there is indeed a correct representation of someone with the condition. I think it’s indicative of the way we think about people we label “disabled” that we can even ask this question. We would never ask if a character in a novel was a correct representation of a cellist or a lesbian or an archbishop. There is no such thing. And the same is true for people who are given the label “disabled”. They are as various and individual as any other group in society. Does Christopher seem real? That’s the question you should ask. That’s the question you should ask of any character in any book. Does he seem rich and layered and believable or does he feel like a lazy arrangement of words on the page? I’m happy for readers to answer “No”, just so long as we agree on the question. As it happens, when I was putting Christopher together I drew upon a long list of beliefs, habits, quirks and behaviours which I borrowed from friends and acquaintances and members of my own family. It would be unfair of me to name the person who can’t eat a plate of food if the broccoli and the salmon are touching, or the person who can’t use a toilet if a stranger has used it. Suffice to say that neither of them would be labelled as having a disability. Which is only to say that Christopher is not that

different from the rest of us. It’s the number and combination of his eccentricities which cause him difficulties. For the record, I have been – and continue to be – immensely touched by the letters I get from readers of the novel. Some write to say that their mother or father or brother or sister didn’t really understand them until they got them to read Curious. Others write saying that they didn’t really understand their mother or father or brother or sister until they themselves read Curious (most, of course, write to me to disagree with Christopher’s explanation of the Monty Hall problem). Though it makes me sad, too, that it took a work of fiction to open a door you would hope people could have opened themselves with persistence and a little imagination. For the record I’m also hugely flattered that the book has become a set text for school children around the world. What writer doesn’t want more and more readers reading their work that closely? But I’m a little uneasy when, as occasionally happens, it is used as a textbook, and handed to policemen or social workers to give them some insight into the behaviour of people they might come across in their professional lives. I’m in favour of anything that introduces a little more empathy into the world, but I’d like to fight the corner for Curious simply as a novel. Of course it’s about disability and our attitudes towards it, but it’s about many other things as well: mathematics, families, space, death, loyalty, maps, Sherlock Holmes, truth, bravery, Swindon, railways... It’s also a novel about the act of reading. It contains huge gaps that readers fill without noticing. Christopher, for example, never says what he looks like, the clothes he wears, the way his hair is cut, whether he is skinny or fat, tall or short. In spite of this most readers have a vivid image of him. And this, I suspect, is one of the reasons why so many of them feel a peculiar sense of ownership about the book, for when they close the final page they have had an experience which is, to a large extent, of their own making.
If I was being contentious I might say that Curious is not really about Christopher at all. Christopher is an outsider, and novelists are drawn to outsiders of all kinds – Robinson Crusoe, Raskolnikov, Holden Caulfield, Jane Eyre, Benjy Compson... – because they grant us a privileged position from which we are able to look back at ourselves. If I was being particularly contentious I might say that Curious is not really about Christopher at all. This gave rise to the idea of the butterfly effect: a butterfly flapping its wings could cause a small change in today’s conditions, resulting in a hurricane tomorrow. These incredibly sensitive equations are called chaotic. Christopher is fascinated by a simple formula discovered by Robert May and George Oster that controls the population dynamics of animals. Much of nature is controlled by the mathematics of chaos.

Christopher’s A-level solution requires some clever algebra to crack it. Algebra is the grammar that underpins the way that numbers work. It’s a language that explains the patterns that lie behind the behaviour of numbers. It’s a bit like a code for running a programme. The code will work whatever the numbers you feed into the programme. For example, 5 times 5 is 25, which is 1 more than 4 times 6 = 24. 6 times 6 is 1 more than 5 times 7, and so on. If you take any number and square it, it’s always one more than if you take the numbers either side and multiply those together. Algebra explains why this is going to work whatever numbers you take.

2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19… The primes are the indivisible numbers. They are the atoms of mathematics because every number is built by multiplying primes together. For example 105 = 3 x 5 x 7. Mathematicians like hunting for patterns but the primes are the ultimate challenge. As you count higher and higher it gets harder and harder to predict where you’ll find the next prime.

Swindon to Paddington
A whole host of animals have experienced space travel since fruit flies were sent aboard a V-2 rocket in 1947. Animals to have experienced spaceflight include monkeys, cats, bees and even spiders. The most famous animal was a dog, Laika, who was on board the Soviet spacecraft, Sputnik 2. The first rat in space, however, is believed to be Hector, launched by France in February 1961. After ascending to 93 miles, Hector made it safely back to Earth.
Paddington, the station Christopher arrives at in London, is one of the busiest stations in the UK, with over 35 million people passing through it every year. It opened in 1854 to provide a station for trains arriving on Brunel’s Great Western Railway – Brunel’s tracks were “broad-gauge” and couldn’t use the standard existing tracks at other stations.
The Milky Way
Today, it would take Christopher about an hour to get from Swindon to London – the track covers approximately 77 miles.
The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy, which means the central section looks like a “bar” and is made of stars, dust and gas. The Milky Way comprises between 100–400 billion stars, but you can only see about 2,500 from any one point on Earth.

Maths in the Music
Curious in Numbers
Prime numbers are one of Christopher’s favourite things. So it made sense to use them as the building blocks for writing the music for this production.
The set used for this tour contains five tons of steel for the walls and floor. It is transported to each venue in four 13.5 metre articulated lorries.
The sequence 2, 3, 5, 7, 11 appears in several guises in the show’s score. Right at the start of the show, a rhythmic sequence pounded out on a kick drum counts out accented patterns of 2, 3, 5, 7 and 11 beats. Later, in "Coming Home", primes are used as numerical steps on a musical scale to create a melodic pattern using only those notes. The prime numbers are used in groups here, too – so two sets of the pattern based on number 2 scale steps, three sets of the number 3 pattern, and so on.
There are 234 sound cues, made up of 2593 different elements.
Elsewhere, chords and melodic patterns are based, wherever possible, on combinations of the same musical scale steps, and there are even some specially designed sounds based on prime number frequencies using additive synthesis. Adrian Sutton
The pixels (lighting dots in the floor) use 2,136 addresses of data and there are 892 pixel LEDs. Christopher uses three pieces of chalk per performance, which adds up to 699 pieces of chalk for this tour. There are eight projectors in the lighting and video rig. The projectors give a total of 11.6 million pixels of projection.

Scott Graham is Artistic Director and co-founder of Frantic Assembly, for which he recently directed Things I Know To Be True, No Way Back, Othello and The Believers. He has been nominated for an Olivier and a Tony Award for Best Choreography on the multi-award-winning NT production The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. For Frantic Assembly he has codirected Little Dogs, Lovesong, Beautiful Burnout. Director/performer credits include Hymns, Tiny Dynamite, On Blindness. Other directing work includes Man to Man at Wales Millennium Centre and Home for the National Theatre of Scotland. He was recently Movement Director for the NT’s Pinocchio, has provided choreography and movement direction on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in the West End; Let The Right One In for National Theatre of Scotland/Royal Court/West End; The Twits for the Royal Court; Rigoletto for Metropolitan Opera; The Glass Menagerie for the American Repertory Theatre/ Broadway; and Dr Dee for Manchester International Festival/ENO. Adrian Sutton Music Adrian Sutton’s scores cross orchestral, chamber and electronic genres, and have featured in a number of successful theatre productions, including Tony-nominated National Theatre production The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. In 2013 he received a joint Olivier Award for Curious Incident’s sound design, and also produced and released Curious Incidentals, the soundtrack album from the play. Further successes include Coram Boy and War Horse at the National Theatre for which he also received Olivier nominations. He produced and released the War Horse soundtrack album in 2008, and his War Horse Suite derived from the score for the show premiered in June 2010. His children’s concert opera The Griffin and the Grail premiered in 2013. Other work for theatre includes Angels in America, Husbands & Sons, Rules for Living, Nation and The Revenger’s Tragedy at the National. His work for TV and film includes Chris Morris’ Jam, Blue Jam and the BAFTA-winning short film My Wrongs.

Delphine Gaborit has worked as a performer with Frantic Assembly, Jasmin Vardimon, Rafael Bonachela, Hofesh Shechter and Adam Linder amongst others. In 2009 she joined Sasha Waltz & Guests in Berlin for 7 creations. She has been working as a movement director for the past four years and is an associate on The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and John Tiffany’s latest production at the National Theatre, Pinocchio. She also worked on Nadia Fall’s productions of Way Upstream at Chichester and The Suicide at the National Theatre. She works as a movement coach for actors in film or TV productions and in collaboration with visual artists such as Anthea Hamilton, Martin Creed and Shahryar Nashat.

Work as a director includes Love Steals Us From Loneliness at Camden People’s Theatre and Chapter Arts Centre; Unearthed on UK tour; Solomon Child at the Royal Exchange Studio; and Cheaper Than Roses and The Skriker at Warwick Arts Centre Studio. She was resident director on The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time UK and Ireland tour 2014/15 and staff director on The Suicide at the National Theatre.

Jeannette Nelson is Head of Voice at the National Theatre. She has worked extensively as a voice coach in theatre, film and TV. At the National Theatre from 1992 to 2001, at Shakespeare’s Globe for the 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2001 seasons; and at the Royal Shakespeare Company from 2001 to 2005. In 2006 she joined the Sydney Theatre Company before returning to the National as Head of Voice in 2007.
