Now in its 46th year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival continues to contribute to the cultural life of Hong Kong, delighting audiences from near and far. This year, the Festival puts on a wide variety of performances that showcase a mix of classic and contemporary genres, spotlighting Hong Kong’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. Featuring some 130 performances in a packed month of music, dance, theatre, opera and more, the Festival has much to offer to arts lovers of all kinds. Alongside dazzling performances by an array of local and international artists, the Festival continues to place great emphasis on its outreach activities. To develop youngsters’ appreciation of the arts, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival offers local students the opportunity to enjoy the Festival’s performances and participate in multi-arts activities. Similarly, the PLUS programme gives audiences an inspirational glimpse into the creative process behind the core Festival performances through a combination of workshops, backstage tours and masterclasses. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts Festival In, Of and For Hong Kong

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2018 represents roughly 14% of its HK$125 million budget. Around 32% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and another 36% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 18% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include A Floating Family, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 26 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 730,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

丹麥國家交響樂團成立於 1 9 2 5 年,最初為丹麥
樂團曾與多位首屈一指的獨奏家和獨唱家同台演
廣播公司附屬樂團。時至今日,樂團已發展為歐
出,包括安蘇菲.慕特、卡華高斯、芮妮.芙萊
洲頂尖交響樂團之一,經常與世界聞名的指揮

Danish National Symphony Orchestra The Danish National Symphony Orchestra (DNSO) was founded in 1925 as part of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation. Today, it is one of the leading symphony orchestras in Europe, performing with the world’s leading conductors and soloists. The strong and straightforward personality of the DNSO is rooted in its close relationship with Danish and Nordic music, and it is the world’s foremost orchestra in the repertoire of Carl Nielsen.
The orchestra has performed with soloists including Anne-Sophie Mutter, Leonidas Kavakos, Renée Fleming, Yo-Yo Ma, Leif Ove Andsnes, Lang Lang, Anna Netrebko, Nigel Kennedy, Daniel Barenboim, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Yehudi Menuhin and Itzhak Perlman; the great composers Sergei Prokofiev and Igor Stravinsky also gave performances of their own works as soloists together with the DNSO.
From 2012, the Principal Conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra was Spanish maestro Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, but his death in June 2014 led to the search for a new leader. In September that year, the DNSO happily announced its new Principal Conductor would be the Italian Fabio Luisi, who took up his position beginning in 2017.
The DNSO has toured extensively in the USA, in South America, in Asia and in most countries in E urope, and performed at some of the most prestigious venues including New York’s Carnegie Hall, London’s Royal Albert Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Cologne Philharmonie, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Vienna’s Musikverein and the Alhambra in Granada.
Over the years, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra has been conducted by artists including Lorin Maazel, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Sergiu Celibidache, Kurt Sanderling, Sir Thomas Beecham, Nicolai Malko and Fritz Busch. Former Principal Conductors and Principal Guest Conductors include Herbert Blomstedt (conductor laureate), Thomas Dausgaard (conductor laureate), Gerd Albrecht, Leif Segerstam, Dmitrij Kitajenko and Yuri Temirkanov.
The home of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra is DR Koncerthuset in Copenhagen, built in 2009 and designed by the famous French architect Jean Nouvel. In 2012, the respected British music magazine Gramophone rated the DR Koncerthuset concert hall among the 10 best in the world.

Symphonic Masters: Fabio Luisi and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra In September 2014 conductor Fabio Luisi made headlines when he turned down the opportunity to succeed James Levine as music director of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Up to that time, audiences and critics had been getting to know Luisi well; his courtship with New York included not only his regular conducting work at the Met but also visits with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in 2011, along with other ensembles and a wide range of concert and operatic music. Luisi clearly seeks out new challenges; he has held numerous prestigious positions (they currently include directorships of the main opera companies of Zurich and Florence), and there seem to be few places where he has not demonstrated his formidable talents as a guest conductor. Returning to those 2014 headlines, it was the opportunity to lead the Danish National Symphony Orchestra that saw Luisi move away from the Met. He took the helm of this fine Nordic ensemble in 2017, succeeding its previous music director, the great Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, but he already knew the orchestra well, having made a number of guest appearances in Copenhagen before being offered the post. Both he and the orchestra members were thrilled by the appointment, with a highly successful tour of the US in the spring of 2017 celebrating their partnership. Since joining the DNSO, Luisi has bonded with the music of the Danish national composer, Carl Nielsen, whose music and personality he has described as “incredibly interesting, original, and complex.” HKAF audience members will have the opportunity to hear Nielsen’s Symphony No 5, a masterpiece from the early 1920s that is rarely heard in Hong Kong, played by the musicians who know it best. German romanticism is also on the programme in the form of the overture to Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer, and Richard Strauss’s Don
Juan. We will also hear the DNSO’s interpretation of Chinese composer Guo Wenjing’s The Rite of Mountains: Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra, performed by soloist Li Biao. Hong Kong music lovers wanting to get a further taste of the DNSO might sample some of their many recordings for Chandos and other labels. For Fabio Luisi, a good place to start is his Grammy Award-winning performances of the second half of Wagner’s Ring cycle between 2011 and 2012, available in Robert Lapage’s landmark production for the Met. Richard Wagner Overture to Der fliegende Holländer, WWV63 After the success of his first important work Rienzi in 1842, the 29 year old Richard Wagner settled in Dresden, as conductor at the Royal Saxon Court Opera. There, that same year, he completed The Flying Dutchman. The composer had cobbled together the libretto himself from a variety of popular myths, drawing especially on Heinrich Heine’s 1833 Fable of the Flying Dutchman. Variations on this tale had long been circulating and the story continues to find its way into popular culture – including, in recent years, through the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Wagner’s libretto tells the story of the Dutch captain condemned to sail the seas for eternity after challenging the primacy of nature. Only once every seven years can he step ashore to seek redemption through the love of a woman. Wagner composed the overture just ahead of the first performance on 2 January 1843. Departing from the expected sonata form, he uses the overture to describe the events of the story, while vividly depicting the raging sea. One can nearly see the waves crashing across the deck as the horns blast out the opening theme. This theme can best be described as a leitmotif representing the Dutchman himself. It is essentially a fanfare, with rising intervals of a perfect fourth and a perfect fifth presented first by the horns and then by the trombones and tuba. This stormy opening is contrasted by the introduction of music from Senta’s ballad (Senta is the woman who finally gives the Dutchman his salvation), led first by the cor anglais. As it comes to a rest, a solo horn quietly re-introduces the Dutchman’s motif over timpani, and again the storm rages, now with a swirly motive in the strings. This in turn is contrasted by the introduction of the boisterous sailors’ song from Act III. Again it is interrupted by the sea as the Dutchman’s motif jostles with material drawn from Senta’s ballad and the sailors' song.

Interview: Li Biao on Guo Wenjing’s The Rite of Mountains percussion concerto How much were you able to communicate directly with the composer about interpretational matters while preparing yourself to first perform this piece?
When performing I was under the impression that in the high-tempo sections you weren't actually looking at the gongs while playing them.
Guo Wenjing composed this piece for me; he is a very well-known composer in China, even overseas too. We talked a lot about the instrumentation and music before he started composing the piece. I wanted to have some really Chinese sounds in this piece (like the gong in the second movement). He worked very hard on this piece; the original music was more than 45 minutes long. After the first performance, both of us thought that we needed to cut some parts. The final version was eventually finished four days before our European tour started in April 2009.
This piece is very special for me, because the playing technique is not normal. Normally I hold four mallets to play a mallet-instrument of percussion, but this time I had to play four different mallets at the same time, on 10 gongs. Guo wrote three “play areas” for each gong which means that from each gong I can make 12 different tone colours. It was very hard at the beginning of the practice period. I spent three days choosing the instrument, two days testing the different mallets, and finally just three weeks practicing this [the second] movement. Of course, I also spent lots of time on the other two movements – but I practiced this movement the hardest, and now I can play this music from memory.
How do you prepare for a performance of The Rite of Mountains? I like Guo's music very much. This piece is very different to his other pieces. It needs more time to read the score, and one must have a “sound picture” of this concert. I studied it very hard; I now know the score even better than Guo himself when I play it with an orchestra. I think more about music myself when it inspires me very deeply. Having heard you perform the piece, it seemed to me that there was a strong ecstatic element in the music and an electrifying, almost upbeat energy. Guo told me that as well as sorrow, he felt anger when he wrote this movement. That’s because of the shoddy school building, which first leaned and then collapsed during the Sichuan earthquake and caused the deaths of so many children. Sorrow, anger, rites and hope were the central points that he wanted to express to the audience.

Guo Wenjing The Rite of Mountains: Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra, Op 47 Guo Wenjing was born in 1956 in Chongqing, Sichuan. He learned to play the violin as a child, but also played a lot of traditional music – music that worked its way into his compositions as both tunes and compositional devices. In 1978, he was among the first class of students admitted to Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music when it reopened after the Cultural Revolution. Unlike many other members of his famous cohort, he has continued to live in China, while pursuing an increasingly international career. Nearly a decade ago, on the afternoon of 12 May 2008 an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale occurred in central Sichuan, claiming nearly 70,000 lives. Guo was devastated by the destruction and loss of life in his home province. Then at work on a newly commissioned percussion concerto, he turned the work into a meditation on the region, its people, and music. His collaborator in the project was percussionist Li Biao, a native of Nanjing who had entered the Central Conservatory of Music in 1982 and then continued his studies in Moscow before taking up a teaching position in Beijing. The two worked closely together and Li has now performed The Rite of Mountains widely; in 2010 he also recorded it for EMI Classics with the Beijing Symphony Orchestra under conductor Tan Lihua. In its three-movement structure the Rite of Mountains follows the conventional concerto form. But the percussion concerto is a recent and relatively rare breed of musical work – there are few rules. Guo’s Rite is dramatic in its structure and intensity, and theatrical. The techniques employed and timbres created reflect the origins of its composer and soloist. Each movement has a unique character, with the soloist moving to different locations, and instruments, on stage. Marimba is
the medium for the first movement. In his use of the term toccata, associated with virtuosity, Guo connects the work to centuries of Western music. For the second movement, the soloist moves to gongs, playing them with brushes then mallets, and then in multiples (with a mallet and drumstick in each hand). As Li has explained it, “Normally I take four mallets to play a mallet-instrument of percussion, but this time I had to play four different mallets at the same time, on ten gongs. Guo wrote three “play areas” for each gong which means that from each gong I can make 12 different tone colours… I spent three days choosing the instrument, two days testing the different mallets, and finally just three weeks practicing this movement.” Li has stated that while composing The Rite of Mountains Guo was motivated by sorrow but especially by anger over the shoddy school construction that resulted in so many deaths. “Sorrow, anger, rite and hope,” he said “were the central points he wanted to express to the audience.” These underlying emotions emerge most clearly in the closing movement, as the soloist confronts an array of drums. In its intensity and rhythmic complicity, the movement calls to mind the Rite of Spring, a connection implied by the title, and where Stravinsky quotes from Russian folksong, Guo inserts the traditional music of his native Sichuan.

Richard Strauss Don Juan, Op 20 With the opening bars of Don Juan, the legendary lover springs to life, fully formed. The music thrusts upward and he charges out, sword in hand. Whatever may follow the introduction, Richard Strauss left no doubt that this is a tone poem about personality and passion. The 24 year old Strauss completed the score of Don Juan over a period of about four months in 1888; Strauss attributed his inspiration to the unfinished play by Nicolaus Lenau. There were no doubt other influences; Strauss had only recently conducted Mozart’s Don Giovanni and had read Lord Byron’s Don Juan of 1824. Still, perhaps the main source of his motivation was the soprano Pauline de Ahna, with whom he had recently fallen in love (and would later marry). Strauss conducted the premiere of Don Juan on 11 November 1889 in Weimar, where he was then conductor of the Court Opera. Here and at subsequent performances the work was a popular and critical success. The conservative critic Eduard Hanslick objected on principle to programmatic music , noting, “colour is everything, musical thought nothing,” after attending Don Juan’s Vienna premiere, but he was one of the few dissenters. Don Juan quickly established Strauss as the most important German composer of his time. The opening bars lead quickly to the soaring, exuberant main theme, before a second and more seductive theme appears around the mid-point of the work. Other thematic material is associated with the women who enter Don Juan’s life. We may interpret the many episodes as literally as we choose: they are variously erotic, sad, and joyous, but always intense; even at the conclusion, as the music depicts the hero taking his final breaths.

Carl Nielsen Symphony No 5, Op 50 Carl Nielsen was in his mid-50s when he completed his Fifth Symphony. It was 1922 and he had made a living through much of his adult life in the second violin section of the Royal Danish Orchestra while gradually establishing a reputation as Denmark’s leading composer – through his symphonies, operas, chamber music, and much more. In 1915 he had assumed direction of Copenhagen’s Musikforeningen (Music Society) concerts and the following year he began teaching at the Royal Academy. Still, in the early 1920s he was little known outside of Denmark. Nielsen conducted the premiere of his Symphony No 5 at Musikforeningen on 24 January 1922 and several more performances were given over the next few years. Hearing the work for the first time at the 1927 new music festival at Frankfurt am Main, the New York Times’ critic Olin Downes curiously described it as “somewhat naïve and in [a] folk vein.” There would be few opportunities to better assess the work for several decades. Nielsen’s reputation grew as a result of recording and with the international tours of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, but the Symphony No 5 was rarely heard. In 1953 Downes wrote, “In Denmark a quality of legendary romanticism finds a highly esteemed expression in the symphonies of Carl Nielsen, who died in 1931 and whose works, in their melodic essence, their native northern atmosphere and basically lyric character are those of a national bard who most sincerely, with a high order of inspiration, upheld the ancestral spirit.” The Fifth Symphony would complicate this image of Nielsen’s music only after it became better known, in the 1960s.
Having relied on standard forms in his previous symphonies and given three of them titles, Nielsen departed from earlier practice with his Symphony No 5. In an interview published just before the premiere of the symphony, he was asked what he had named it. “Nothing!” he responded, before continuing: “the only thing that music in the end can express: resting forces in contrast to active ones.” The emphasis on contrast, he said, was one of the reasons he had limited the symphony to two movements. Few four-movement symphonies had much to say after the opening movement, he claimed. Thus, “I’ve divided the symphony into two large, broad sections – the first begins slowly and peaceful and the second is more active.” “Peaceful” may be an apt way of describing the opening of the first movement. Violas enter first, alternating between two notes. A pair of bassoons introduces the first thematic idea, followed by alternating flutes and horns. The violins, answered by double basses, then open a new section. The mood grows ominous. Softly, a snare drum beats out a rhythm and then repeats it more forcefully. Timpani and strings join the march. Clarinets and flutes swirl and compete for attention. Then calm is somehow restored and the horns sing. But back comes the snare drum. After the hushed close of the first movement, the second, marked Allegro, opens with an explosion of sound. In time it grows lyrical only to be interrupted. Contrapuntal textures build to huge climaxes, dissipate and rise again. The limits of tonality are frequently challenged if never quite breached. The menacing atmosphere of the first movement ultimately gives way to exultation. Programme notes by Brian C. Thompson

Fabio Luisi Grammy and ECHO Klassik Award-winner Fabio Luisi serves as General Music Director of the Zurich Opera and Principal Conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra (DNSO). After concluding a six-year tenure as Principal Conductor of the Metropolitan Opera last season, he launches a new appointment as Music Director of Florence’s Opera di Firenze this spring. Luisi opened his 2017/18 season conducting the DNSO in Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, followed by performances of Nielsen’s Fifth, Henze’s Second Violin Concerto featuring Julia Fischer, Franz Schmidt’s oratorio Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln, and Beethoven’s Fifth and Seventh Symphonies later in the season. He also acts as Jury Chairman for the DNSO’s Malko Competition for Young Conductors. Luisi is also an accomplished composer whose Saint Bonaventure Mass received its world premiere in September 2017 at New York’s St. Bonaventure University, followed a few days later by its New York City premiere in the MetLiveArts series with the Buffalo Philharmonic and Chorus. At Zürich Opera, Luisi led a new production of Kurt Weill’s Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny and will return again for Verdi’s La forza del destino. In the USA, he has recently conducted two Beethoven piano concertos with soloists Yefim Bronfman and Lise de la Salle, respectively, with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Dallas Symphony. Luisi’s season is rounded out with Falstaff at Opera de Paris, a new production of Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini at La Scala, guest appearances with Beijing’s China NCPA Orchestra and the Czech Philharmonic, and performances with Philharmonia Zürich featuring cellist Jan Vogler and pianist Hélène Grimaud. Luisi received a Grammy Award for his leadership of the last two operas of Der Ring des Nibelungen when Deutsche Grammophon’s DVD release of the cycle, recorded live at the Met, was named Best Opera Recording of 2012. His extensive discography also features operas by Verdi, Salieri, and Bellini; symphonies by Honegger, Respighi, and Liszt; works by Franz Schmidt and Richard Strauss, and an award-winning account of Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony. A native of Genoa, Luisi was awarded the Grifo d’Oro for his contributions to the city’s cultural legacy. Li Biao’s unique and in-depth interpretations of percussion music bring significant rediscovery and fresh insight into the well-established repertoire, making him one of the most outstanding percussion soloists in the world. Li Biao performs an extensive range of musical work and has given a great number of solo recitals at various music festivals. He has also cooperated with renowned orchestras and chamber ensembles including Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Singapore Chinese orchestra, NCPA Orchestra, China National Sy m phony O rc hestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, Beijing Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and many others. In 2018, Li Biao will be performing at the landmark concert hall in Hamburg, the Elbphilharmonie. He will also be touring around Asia with Fabio Luisi and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, after performing at DR Koncerthuset in Copenhagen. Season highlights also include Tainan Arts Festival in Taiwan, a masterclass series in Japan in August, the opening concert of the International Percussion Festival at China National Center for the Performing Arts, as well as touring with Li Biao Percussion Group in the coming summer. Recent highlights include a performance at the 2017 Belt and Road Forum Evening Gala at the China National Center for the Performing Arts. In summer 2017 he also performed Guo Wenjing’s Rite of the Mountains with the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon, wining a long-lasting standing ovation. In 2016, Li Biao was appointed Artistic Director of China National Center for the Performing Art’s International Percussion Festival. This marked the establishment of a new summer tradition for local audiences and has once again proven the infinite creativity and possibilities of percussion music.
