Now in its 46th year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival continues to contribute to the cultural life of Hong Kong, delighting audiences from near and far. This year, the Festival puts on a wide variety of performances that showcase a mix of classic and contemporary genres, spotlighting Hong Kong’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. Featuring some 130 performances in a packed month of music, dance, theatre, opera and more, the Festival has much to offer to arts lovers of all kinds. Alongside dazzling performances by an array of local and international artists, the Festival continues to place great emphasis on its outreach activities. To develop youngsters’ appreciation of the arts, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival offers local students the opportunity to enjoy the Festival’s performances and participate in multi-arts activities. Similarly, the PLUS programme gives audiences an inspirational glimpse into the creative process behind the core Festival performances through a combination of workshops, backstage tours and masterclasses. The Government is committed to promoting the development of arts and culture in the city, and we are blessed to have the support of devoted sponsors and donors who join us in making the Hong Kong Arts Festival an international success. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts Festival In, Of and For Hong Kong

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2018 represents roughly 14% of its HK$125 million budget. Around 32% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and another 36% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 18% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include A Floating Family, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 26 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 730,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

Claude Régy

“Who might he have been?” Rilke asks this question, but to this day no one has been able to come up with an answer. A drug addict and alcoholic, Georg Trakl commits incest, suffers from bouts of insanity, is obsessed with his own destruction and is steeped in Christianity. Born in Salzburg in 1887 to a Protestant father and a Catholic mother, he interrupts his studies to sign up as a military pharmacist in 1910.

Preoccupied with rhythms and sounds, attentive to silence, he opens up inner spaces within us: we enter into a mode of perception beyond that of pure intelligibility.

He is 23 years old.

The first painters coloured their hands and then applied them to the rocky cave walls as they sheltered from bad weather. The caves were a shelter to predatory creatures too, mainly birds who delight in certain parts of the human body. The vultures favoured the corpses’ eyes first, then their brains.

Four years later the First World War breaks out in Europe. The young pharmacist-soldier finds himself on the front line at Grodek, unable to cope with the sheer number of wounded or the severity of their injuries, the combined cries of men and horses, disembowelled, limbs blown off or with head injuries. The poet-pharmacist puts aside certain drugs intended for the wounded for his own use. He dies of a cocaine overdose. Suicide or accidental death, no one knows. Death comes in a military hospital near Grodek in November 1914. Battle of Grodek: “All the roads lead to black decay”. His final poem: Grodek. Dead at the age of 27. His first work is published in journals at 21. In his six years of writing, Trakl creates a lifetime of work. Trakl and Rimbaud have the same precocious genius. Laconic and intense, Trakl brings the seemingly irreconcilable together with devastating effect.

Coming out of an exhibition of African masks, Picasso once said that his art form – painting – had nothing to do with aesthetics, but rather everything to do with magic.

Eye sockets and craniums pecked cleaned. Cries of vultures, here and there, rip through Trakl’s poems. With Trakl it is all about a magical organisation of language. It reaches the essential core of our being and our contradictions. Enjoying incest as a young man with his willing sister, letting himself be contaminated by guilt. "Accursed race", he went on to write. His sister is four years younger than him. “Two wolves have mingled their blood in a stony embrace” Thus raising incest to a level where, so it seems, angels live.

The image of the sister is always there – an endlessly repeated appearance – but always there like a mythical figure, sometimes designated by the term “adolescent”. A mythical figure. And yet, wounded, the sister bleeds. This sister, Grete – this is her shortened first name – was an excellent musician. Very soon her brother had turned her into a drug addict – in his wake – and three years after her brother’s death, she took her own life. Like Pierre Soulages, well before him Georg Trakl works in what has been called “beyond black”. Against a black background, both create harsh qualities and light, diffracted, becomes visible. The light of darkness can be seen. When his father died, Georg was 23. At mealtimes – only recalled – the bread bleeds. Or rather, hard as stone at his mother’s touch, it cannot be broken. An interview with director Claude Régy

The legendary French director Claude Régy is famed for his innovative approach to stagecraft, challenging how audiences perceive the reality of the text in each of his plays. In this interview excerpt Régy discusses Dream and Derangement, his play based on the dark poetry of Austrian poet Georg Trakl. In this work, you’ve focused on Georg Trakl: on his poetry, but also on the figure of the poet, the man who, a little like Arthur Rimbaud, wrote a body of work that was as brief as it was tortured. You also quoted Rainer Maria Rilke who asked: “Who might he have been?”

It’s hard to answer this question because Trakl’s life was shaped by excess to such a great extent. That’s what drew me to him: excess. He really broke every rule and taboo. He was a drug addict and alcoholic, he committed incest, suffered bouts of insanity, was obsessed with self-destruction, and yet was imbued with Christianity; a double-track Christianity since his mother was Catholic and his father Protestant. We sense perverted and twisted themes in his texts, but very present Christian ones. The violence in Trakl’s life came in crossing all the forbidden lines. What interested me in particular was the crossing of the line of clear comprehension,

this very French divide that puts reason to one side, “whatever is well conceived is clearly said”, and dismisses the rest as madness and nonsense. For me, following this line is not about crafting darkness or adding to it, but revealing what is expressed beyond the intelligible. Trakl went beyond the limits of what a human being can bear. It’s a territory that always attracted me and that I’ve tried getting as close to as I could through the writers I’ve brought to the stage. In the case of Trakl, work and life cannot be separated. What works of his are you going to use to tackle these two inextricable dimensions? I think Trakl’s life can be found entirely in his texts, particularly Rêve et folie (Dream and Derangement) which he described as a prose poem. One of the aspects in his writing that fascinates me is its violence. Extremely tricky areas are tackled and these words take us there. In German, the word that he uses and which is translated as “derangement” contains something very dark in it that the French word “folie” doesn’t convey. Yes, the German title is Traum und Umnachtung. You can hear the word Nacht in it, for night. Intuitively I’d say that the German word describes like the casting of a shadow, the fact of being “invaded by night”. There’s definitely something in this derangement that draws us towards darkness and night – hence this closeness with the realm of dreams. Certainly, the word “folie” in French is not cheerful, but it doesn’t have the same nuance of darkness and fear. “See our lonely skiff sunk down by starry skies / the silent face of night”. These lines by Trakl combine these different themes and you also find the image of a boat in it. Yes, silence, night, fear: all these themes are very present in his work… In other respects, with Trakl the boat is an image that conveys incest. The lovers

are often in a black boat, making a dark crossing. This obsessive presence of incest returns in all his work, and with it the image of the sister – whom he sometimes describes as an adolescent. He definitely had a huge influence on her. He introduced her to drugs, and three years after his death she committed suicide in strange circumstances. The relationship between this brother and sister is one of absolute violence; it is an intensely close and destructive relationship. In their childhood photos you can see a resemblance between them – in the violence expressed in their faces… Are you going to pursue a monologue form – where a voice can be heard, revealing the text? Yes, I’m working with just one actor, Yann Boudaud. Reading Trakl, something is conveyed, something reaches us, something penetrates us from the unspeakable. It’s not true that you can’t approach the incomprehensible. If you’re attached to it, if you’re confronted by it, you can be invaded by an awareness of this line - this threshold, and just as soon by the desire to cross it. By Gilles Amalvi

In 1980, after almost 30 years as an independent theatre director, Claude Régy felt the urge to found his own company: Les Ateliers Contemporains (The Contemporary Workshops).

As a production unit, the company would allow him to better master the financial and working conditions of his creations, in particular to give him time to first discover and study new writings, then to prepare and rehearse before bringing them on the stage. This has led to more than 30 years of research, experimentation, discovery and the introduction in France of new playwrights, and the opening to vast audiences of a new stage expression far away from a realistic, TV-like playstyle. Around 30 major theatre works have been produced and performed in France and all over the world, including Sarraute's Elle est là, Handke's Par les villages, Chekhov's Ivanov and Sartre's Huis-clos at the Comédie Française, Maeterlinck's Intérieur, W. Stevens' Three Travelers Watch a Sunrise, Motton's Downfall and The Terrible Voice of Satan, Reznikoff's Holocaust, Fosse's Someone Is Going to Come, Melancholia and Death Variations, S. Kane's 4.48 Psychosis, Pessoa's Maritime Ode, Vesaas' Brume de dieu (from the novel The Birds) and La Barque le soir, plus several operas, lyric pieces, books and films. Due to the major part played by Claude Régy on the contemporary French stage, Les Ateliers Contemporains entered into a contract with the French Ministry of Culture straight after its foundation and is now an established institution of national importance, still active without ever having run a public theatre.

文本 Text Georg Trakl was born in 1887 in Salzburg into a family of wealthy merchants. His father, a Hungarian-born Protestant, ran a hardware business while his Catholic mother had developed a passion for her collection of antiques and somewhat neglected her family; he was the fifth of seven children, all of whom spoke French with their gouvernante. As a teenager, Trakl engaged in an intense incestuous relationship with his sister Margarethe, four years younger. The family would later destroy their correspondence, but the image of his sister, the anguish and guilt caused by this carnal relationship, were to haunt his work. In 1904, Trakl joined a circle of young poets and was full of admiration for Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Verlaine and Nietzsche. He eventually dropped out of school and discovered narcotics while working in a pharmacy in 1905. In 1908, he left for Vienna to start pharmacy studies. There Trakl mingled in local artist circles and wrote his first collection of poems (only to be published in 1939).

In 1912, as an army pharmacist, he met the owner of the literary review Der Brenner, who was to become the most ardent supporter of his poetry work. From then on, Trakl would be regularly published in Vienna and Berlin, in avant-garde reviews or publications. As the First World War broke out, Trakl was conscripted into the medical corps and sent to the eastern front (Poland/Ukraine) where, at the battle of Grodek, he ended up single-handedly treating the wounded and the dying for two days in the most abominable conditions. After this traumatic experience, Trakl attempted suicide and then, wounded and prone to depression, he was eventually repatriated to the Krakow military hospital where he died of a cocaine overdose on 2 November 1914.

導演 Director Claude Régy was born in 1923. As a teenager, reading Dostoyevsky was "like an axe slashing through a frozen sea”. After studying political science, Régy turned to acting, training first with Charles Dullin and then Tania Balachova. In 1952 he started staging productions, introducing Federico Garcia Lorca's Doña Rosita the Spinster to France. He soon turned his back on psychological realism and naturalism as well as the over-simplification of so-called "political" theatre. Poles apart from entertainment he chose to risk exploring other spaces for performing, other real-life spaces: lost spaces. Contemporary playwrights – many of whom have been introduced to audiences by Régy – have led him to experiment on the boundaries of theatre, where all certainties about the nature of reality collapse. Régy has introduced the French public to plays by Harold Pinter (1965), Marguerite Duras (1962), Nathalie Sarraute (1972), Edward Bond (1971), Peter Handke (1974), Botho Strauss (1980), Maurice Maeterlinck (1984), Gregory Motton (1992), David Harrower (2000), Jon Fosse (1999), Sarah Kane (2002) and Tarjei Vesaas (2010). Régy has directed actors including Philippe Noiret, Michel Piccoli, Delphine Seyrig, Michel Bouquet, Madeleine Renaud, Pierre Dux, Maria Casarès, Alain Cuny, Pierre Brasseur, Michael Lonsdale, Jeanne Moreau, Gérard Depardieu, Emmanuelle Riva, Valérie Dréville and Isabelle Huppert. Régy has worked for the Comédie Française on productions including Anton Chekhov’s Ivanov (1985) and Jean-Paul Sartre’s Huis-Clos (1990); he has also staged several operas in Paris such as Luciano Berio’s Passaggio (1985) and Richard Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1990) at Théâtre du Châtelet, as well as Arthur Honegger’s Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher (1991) at Opéra Bastille.

Yann Boudaud Performer Yann Boudaud studied acting at the National Conservatory in Rennes and the École du Passage in Paris. In 1996 he participated in a workshop on several of Pessoa's poems directed by Claude Régy at the Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne. From then on he took part in all of Régy's productions until 2002, including the title role in La Mort de Tintagiles by Maurice Maeterlinck, sole actor in Holocaust (a poem by US writer Charles Reznikoff), one in a cast of three in Someone Is Going to Come by Jon Fosse and Knives In Hens by David Harrower. Other appearances came in Melancholia Theatre from Jon Fosse's novel Melancholia I, and in The Diary of One Who Disappeared by Leoš Janá ek. After a break of 10 years Boudaud and Régy decided to collaborate again in 2012 on La Barque le soir (The Boat In The Evening) from a novel by Norwegian writer Tarjei Vesaas, followed in 2016 by Rêve et Folie (Dream and Derangement), based on Georg Trakl's poem. Bodaud has also worked with other theatre directors including Marc François, Hubert Colas, Noel Casale and Michel Cerda.

Alexandre Barry

Assistant to the Director / Lights

Alexandre Barry studied dramatic art. He met Claude Régy in 1995 and has been his assistant and artistic collaborator ever since. This constant and deepening partnership finally extended to him designing the lighting for Régy's production Rêve et Folie. Besides his work for the stage, including his own production of Road to Damascus by August Strindberg, Barry is also a movie maker. Since 1995 he has directed portraits and TV documentaries. In 2012, he directed Mist of God (based on the Tarjei Vesaas novel The Birds), the only one of Claude Régy's stage productions to have been made into a film. These movies have all been broadcasted by several European TV channels and have been selected to participate in important international film festivals.

Sallahdyn Khatir

Scenography / Technical Manager

As a set designer Sallahdyn Khatir creates unique spaces and special objects for installations, performances and live theatre. These may be abstract, evoking the unconscious, or, on the contrary, very concrete, real, even carnal forms, with raw material transfigured so as to refer to mental spaces. His objects focus on dynamics, escape lines, empty spaces, tension, and often play with retinal persistence. They disturb the common notions of space and time. Khatir began working with Claude Régy in 1994 as a technical director; as of 2003 he has designed the scenography for all of Régy’s productions. As a set designer, Khatir has also worked with French choreographers and theatre directors including Julia Cima, Marielle Pinsard, Fabienne Berger and Thomas Ferrand among others, as well as in the field of cinema.
